First of all, I want to start by introducing myself. My name is Carla Dubis, I am the Creative Director and new editor of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles. You may have seen my name here and there throughout the last 4 issues of our New Tampa publication. I am 31 years old and I was born and raised in Venezuela, my mother is Italian and my Father, who unexpectedly passed away 2 months ago, was from Poland. What can I say? I am a mutt! I am fluent in English, Spanish and Italian. I moved from Venezuela to Tampa when I was 16 years old to attend UT. I have a Bachelors in Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Tampa and a Masters in Education with a concentration in Instructional Technology and Web Design from USF. Go Bulls! :) I have called Tampa my home since 2003, and even though at first I thought to myself “As soon as I graduate I am out of here!” I fell in love with this city and I have no intentions of ever leaving. I have lived in Harbour Island for the past 10 years and I have seen this city grow exponentially in the past decade. I have seen so many of spots close its doors throughout the years, but so many other businesses and restaurants have opened, making this medium sized city, feel like a big metropolis. I never get bored, there’s always something fun to do here. From an art festival to a margarita festival, from broadway plays to fantastic concerts and so much more! I am a big foodie, a craft beer lover, a caffeine addict and a big lightning fan! I spend most of my weekends eating all over Tampa Bay, fishing with my fiance (Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles’ Publisher Matt Selby), hanging out with my family (who moved to Tampa 5 years ago after I bragged about it so much!), rooting for our local sports teams (go lightning!), or watching a movie. Whenever I get the opportunity to travel, which is one of my biggest passions, I find myself missing Tampa a lot (something I never really thought I would experience!) because it’s home to me now, and because I got spoiled with all the things this amazing city has to offer... Here we have it all! We have beautiful beaches, amazing weather (most of the time, that humidity though!), luxury boutiques, fantastic shopping malls, cultural events, art festivals, music festivals and some of the best restaurants I have ever had the pleasure of trying. The best part? you are only a short drive away. I absolutely love Tampa Bay and there’s no other place I would want to live. Especially now,

with so many fun things to do every weekend, and with Mr. Jeffrey Vinik’s future plans for downtown Tampa that will make this city even better than it is now. Want to know what I am talking about? Make sure to read “Mr. Vinik’s Plans for Downtown Tampa” on page 12. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who believed in me and trusted me with the positions I currently have, the Selby Family. Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles has been owned and operated by the Selby Family for over 25 years, and I am very lucky to be the newest addition to the family! I could not be happier God put me in the path of this family, they are seriously the most amazing, loving, hard-working and honest individuals I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Working with them is as rewarding as it is fun. So what can I offer Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles? Besides my graphic and web design skills, I will definitely bring my decent grammar and editing ability and my personal insight about all things Tampa Bay.. I will be keeping you up to date with the latest news and fun events happening in the area, I will tell you about the best restaurants and hot spots to visit... after all, I have been living here for over a decade, so I know a thing or two about Tampa! If you ever want to reach out to me because you want us to share a local event, or if you have an amazing story you want published in any of our 7 publications, please email me directly at carla@nnlflorida.com Last but not least, I want to thank and congratulate our “Dad and I - Tampa Bay Rays Contest” winners; Jaime Lynn Gomez, Amanda Plumley, Matt Gaska, Tommy Pearson and Enrique Izaguirre. They participated for a chance to win press level tickets to see the Tampa Bay Rays at the Tropicana Field and won BIG! We hope you enjoy the games, and don’t forget to take lots of pictures because we will be reposting them on our social media pages! F.Y.I. The Rays Giveaway Contest is still going on! So if you want to win press level tickets and complimentary parking passes so you can enjoy a fun-filled day at the ball park with your loved ones, please follow us on instagram @ TampaBayNews and like our facebook page “TampaBayNewsAndLifestyles.” Make sure you like a lot of our posts and comment on as many as you can so you can get noticed. Epilepsy Services Foundation

Creating a Better Future and Environment For Persons Affected By Epilepsy

By Carla Dubis

The Epilepsy Services Foundation has been selflessly serving the Tampa Bay community for 44 years by offering programs and services designed to increase the understanding of epilepsy, promoting dialogue between persons with epilepsy, families and others dealing with the impact of this medical condition and by raising funds to provide scholarships for kids and teens affected by this chronic medical condition. Epilepsy is a chronic disorder that causes unprovoked, recurrent seizures. A seizure is a sudden rush of electrical activity in the brain. There are two main types of seizures. Generalized seizures

6 JULY 2017

affect the whole brain. Focal, or partial seizures, affect just one part of the brain. A mild seizure may be difficult to recognize. It can last only a few seconds during which you lack full awareness. Stronger seizures can cause spams and uncontrollable muscle twitches, and can last a few seconds to several minutes. During a stronger seizure, some people become confused and may even lose consciousness. Afterward some may not even have memory of it happening. Epilepsy is a fairly common neurological disorder that affects 65 million people around the world. In the United States, it

affects about 3 million people. Anyone can develop epilepsy, but it's more common in young children and older adults. It occurs slightly more in males than in females. Even though there's no cure for epilepsy, the disorder can be managed with medications and other strategies. ESF's vision is to have all those affected by epilepsy and other seizure disorders living in West Central Florida feel empowered to achieve their full potential, so they can live a healthy, productive and satisfying life within a supportive community. ESF also offers accurate and up-to-date information about epilepsy, as well as support,

challenges and fears associated with this condition. The Epilepsy Services Foundation Board of Directors is comprised of persons directly affected by epilepsy and / or who reflect the diversity of the communities in which the foundation serves. President Callan "Cal" Albritton currently works for the United States Attorney's Office in Tampa. He previously worked for Judge Anthony Porcelli, Federal Magistrate Judge and for Wiand Guerra King, LLC. "Cal" has served on the board since 2014. Board's Vice President Kim Radcliffe has a son with epilepsy and works for CITIBANK. Alysia Peddy, the Board's secretary, is the mother of two children with epilepsy and works at Peddy Lumber. Other board members have either been diagnosed with epilepsy or are closely related to someone who is. So the Board of Directors and other members know very well all the struggles of this chronic medical condition and its repercussions.

The Epilepsy Services

Foundation is a proud partner with Camp Boggy Creek, which took place at the end of June, and had over 125 members in attendance from all over Florida. The Epilepsy Week at Camp Boggy Creek is designated for children and teens with epilepsy, ages 7-16. At Camp Boggy Creek participants are guaranteed a safe, life-enriching, fun-filled time and are able to meet other campus who have the same medical condition. To learn more about Camp Boggy Creek and to register your child or teen for next year's camp get online and visit their website: www.boggycreek.org.

The Epilepsy Services Foundation also raises funds for college scholarships in order to assist students affected by epilepsy to be able to pursue a college degree. ESF gives special medical scholarships to those future college students who decide to pursue a medical degree in the field of neurology. ESF also provides funding for medical support services. Another fun and upcoming event that ESF is sponsoring is the "ESF SeptemBEERfest" which will take place September 23 at 5:00pm. This is a fundraising event to showcase local brew clubs in around the Tampa Bay area. Tickets are $25, and guests will be able to taste

25 local craft beers, vote for their favorite ones and have the opportunity to win some amazing raffle prizes. The fun continues with complimentary food and beverages, face painting for kids and a silent auction. Southern Brewing and Winemaking hosts this annual event. The location is 4500 North Nebraska Avenue, Tampa, FL 33603. For more information about this beer festival and other upcoming fundraising events please contact ESF at 813.374.8907 or email Tom at torth@epilepsysf.org. The Epilepsy Services Foundation is a volunteer-driven organization. If you would like to become a volunteer or if you wish to donate to this wonderful non-profit organization and its incredible cause and services please log on to http://epilepsysf.org/

One great thing the Epilepsy Services Foundation does is help raise funds to provide scholarships for kids diagnosed with epilepsy to attend Camp Boggy Creek, Epilepsy Family Retreat weekends, Rotary's Camp Florida and Deliver the Dream Camp. The next Epilepsy Family Retreat Weekend is August 18-20, 2017 so make sure to mark your calendar! The retreat is hosted by the Epilepsy Services Foundation and takes place at Deliver the Dream Center in Haines City, FL. Deliver the dream is a nonbarrier facility and serves persons with special needs. The Retreat Weekend is dedicated to epilepsy families. It enables families to "regain strength, mend spirits and just be families again." To apply go to:

Mr. Vinik’s Vision for Downtown Tampa By Michelle Naktin

Born on March 22, 1959, everyone knew Jeffrey Vinik was going to be special, but I doubt they really knew just how incredible this New Jersey native would turn out to be. Mr. Vinik took the financial industry by storm by becoming the most prominent mutual fund manager when he led Fidelity Magellan in the 1990s. He made millions of dollars by taking chances on depreciated assets and after turning 50, he decided he wanted to make a change. Jeffrey told his wife Penny he had made the decision to buy a hockey team. Although shocked, Lightning Owner, Jeffrey Vinik Penny supported her husband’s decision, then Mr. Vinik did what made him a wealthy man: He did research. He read books on sports management, spoke to team owners around the country, met with N.H.L. Commissioner Mr. Bettman and even used Google to search “How to buy a hockey team.” When Jeff was ready in March 2010, he turned off the lights in his Boston office and became the owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning, a team that had won a Stanley Cup but sadly also had a parade of owners. This time was going to be different. Shortly after Mr. Vinik’s purchase of the Lightning, he began acquiring property surrounding Amalie Arena, where his hockey team plays. The area, once industrial, is now mostly parking lots and downtown waterfront property, and Mr. Vinik has big plans for the 30acre block. Channelside Bay Plaza, which Mr. Vinik owns, is a place where lots of lightning fans come together to get drinks and food before the games, but sadly the plaza has struggled financially for years. Many businesses on the plaza have closed their doors in the past 5 years, but restaurants such as Hooters, Thai Tani, Hablo Taco and Coldstone Creamery are still surviving. Vinik’s plans call for Channelside Bay Plaza to be demolished, with a park, office, retail and residential units to go in its place. Vinik’s proposal has more shops, restaurants, and businesses to be constructed across from Amalie Arena, where Ferg’s Live Bar and parking lots are located.

Discussions are still in the early stages, say officials and executives with Strategic Property Partners, the Tampa real estate company set up by Vinik and Cascade, a private capital fund launched by Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates. The development plan has quickly grown from $1 billion to $3 billion in just a short amount of time. “Our vision embraces the Channelside waterfront. We want to create a mixed-use destination, designed to better connect the surrounding neighborhoods and create view corridors to the channel,” commented James Nozar, CEO of Strategic Property Partners. “It provides for a vibrant, yet functional waterfront, respecting the unique needs of the port that will maximize value for both the port and the community.” About $34 million dollars worth of work is currently under way and Strategic Property Partners has assembled a world-class design team for the project. Tampa-based Alfonso Architects, Inc. and David Conner + Associates will be leading the master-planning and vision for this exciting project. SPP originally envisioned a project with an ambitious 3 million square feet of development and now those numbers are looking closer to a 9 million square feet of expansion over the next decade with plans including: • 3,500 apartments and condos. (To give you an idea of comparison, downtown Tampa now has about 5,800 residences total.) • 2.4 million square feet of offices • 1 million plus square feet of retail Strategic Property Partners also plans to demolish and rebuild the 230,000-square-foot Channelside Bay Plaza and plans are in the works to build two new hotels plus renovate the 700-room Marriott Waterside Hotel & Marina. The proposal is planned for implementation over four phases, allowing Port Tampa Bay to continue ongoing operations and maintain required security along the working wharf. In Phase 1, SPP will partially transition the Garrison surface parking lot into a waterfront park with an adjacent events pavilion and beer garden. The Tampa Riverwalk extension would be constructed connecting with the park. Phase 1 would deliver in late 2018 pending approval of the proposed project by the Port Tampa Bay Board of Commissioners in early 2017. In Phase 2, two additional buildings would be constructed. Each would be one to three stories. The design envisions the ground floor will be lined with active retail and restaurants with outdoor dining oriented towards the waterfront. The wharf is also planned to be open to the public when not in use by the port. In the proposed timeline, Phase 2 is planned for delivery to market between Spring 2019 and Spring 2020. In Phases 3 and 4, residential buildings would be constructed along Channelside Drive, which will preserve view corridors and create a more comfortable pedestrian-oriented scale along the waterfront. The city of Tampa and Hillsborough County have already committed a total of $100 million in downtown property tax revenues for realigning streets, putting in new water and sewer systems as well as making other public improvements on the land surrounding Amalie Arena. “This is another exciting step toward bringing the waterfront back to the people, the time is right to take this area to the next level and create a new destination for generations to come.” Says Mayor Bob Buckhorn.

The vision for the Tampa Bay Area and property is to transform the land within the Channelside area – currently industrial waterfront and make it into a dynamic, community centerpiece where people will come to live, work and play all in the same neighborhood for years to come. This is a much needed renovation and development that will boost our local economy and attract new residents from all over the state and even the country. With thousands of UT students, young adults, retirees and entrepreneurs looking for affordable downtown housing options, we can only hope that Mr. Vinik’s vision will be a dream come true for many current and potential South Tampa residents.

and in the beginning his focus was to provide great service to the residential replacement market. In 1990, David joined up with Frank Lipp (senior advisor) who brought fifty years’ experience to the company. Frank and David worked together and built off each other’s strong character traits, growing and expanding Action Air. In 1993 David made the choice to only sell the best energy efficient products available that came with the best warranties in the business. Since that decision, Action Air Conditioning has become one of the largest HVAC dealers in the Tampa Bay Area, complete with a gorgeous showroom that

Longoria Looking to Finish what Boggs Started

By Jake Berry

If you look out over the left center field fence at Tropicana Field you will see a familiar sight. Just over section 147 and beside Ducky’s Sports Bar in the 162 Landing is the iconic number 42 plastered on the wall. Jackie Robinson’s retired number is a fixture in all 30 major league ballparks and while the Rays have just a 20-year history, Robinson’s number isn’t the only one enshrined in the Trop. Just below it is the number 12 and it belongs to a man that helped put the expansion franchise on the map during its 1998 inaugural season. That number 12 belongs to Hall of Famer, Wade Boggs.

Boggs is an AL East icon. He dons the Boston Red Sox cap in his Cooperstown plaque and his lone World Series ring comes from his time with the New York Yankees. While the list of accomplishments in the Chicken Man’s career goes on and on, there is one more feat, one more accomplishment that adds to the 12 time all-star’s legacy. The Tampa native signed a two year deal with his hometown Tampa Bay Devil Rays before the franchise’s inaugural season. Entering his age 40 seasons, Boggs had nothing left to prove. He was almost guaranteed a spot in the Hall of Fame, he had his World Series ring, he had won five batting titles, and he played for two of the most historic franchises in the game. Still, Boggs took the opportunity in front of him, an opportunity many players dream of, and he took on the challenge of helping establish a new major league ball club in his own backyard. As a member of the then Devil Rays, Boggs eclipsed many milestones, including his 3000th hit. However, nothing was more important than the impact he had on the fan base and the community as major league baseball was finally brought to Tampa/St. Pete. Boggs laid the foundation for 18 years of ballplayers to come after him, and while the Chicken Man held down third base for 152 games during his Devil Rays career, there is a player manning the hot corner now that is looking to finish what Boggs started. Evan Longoria is the face of the Tampa Bay Rays franchise. When debating which players go on the Mount Rushmore of Tampa Bay baseball, Longoria is a unanimous choice amongst the fan base. The Rays made Longoria the third overall pick in the 2006 draft and he made his debut with the team just a year and a half later in April of 2008. After posting a .272 average

with 27 home runs, the 22 year old won the American League Rookie of the Year award and also made his first of three allstar teams. While the individual accolades were great, Longoria’s rookie year legacy really comes from him leading the squad to not only their winning season in franchise history, but also their first pennant and ultimately their only World Series appearance. Also a third baseman, Longoria plays a much different game at the plate than Boggs. While Boggs was known for his uncanny ability to slap the ball around the ballpark and find holes in the defense, Rays fans know Longoria for hitting the ball out of the ballpark. He is the only player in Rays history with more than 200 homers and will more than likely end his career over the 300 mark. That isn’t the only category Longoria leads. He is also the team’s all-time leader in doubles, runs batted in, at bats, games played, and there are several other records that he will likely break before his career is over. There are two iconic time periods in Rays history, the first couple of years when major league baseball was new to the area in the late 90’s and a decade later when the team went from worst to first and made their World Series run in 2008. Both of those periods were headed by two of the most iconic players in Rays history. Boggs was a Hall of Fame bound third baseman that was dangerous at the plate with a solid legacy in place. Longoria fits all of those characteristics, except his story remains unfinished. Wade Boggs helped to put the Tampa Bay Rays on the baseball map and Evan Longoria is looking to finish what he started by bringing a World Series title to Boggs’ hometown.

Garage Guru What’s going on with my car?

Brought to you by Christian Brothers Automotive, New Tampa and Wesley Chapel

Dear Garage Guru, “My husband and I are planning a history road trip this summer with our kids up the Eastern seaboard to visit Colonial Williamsburg, Jefferson’s home at Monticello, and DC and all the museums and sights the capital has. We have a 2014 Chrysler minivan that we keep “pretty good” care of. What should we do to make sure we make it roundtrip with no troubles?” Dear Summer Road Trip! I have wonderful memories as a kid going cross country from California to visit family in Georgia in Mom and Dad’s ’49 Buick Roadmaster with the swamp cooler hanging on the window. I learned the best ways to bug my sisters on these trips, and learned my Dad meant business when he leaned over the seat and said “Don’t make me stop this car!” Anyone else remember the Burma Shave signs on Route 66? A Road Trip can be a wonderful family bonding time to see our great country and create lifetime memories. Or, you could find yourself in your own version of “Vacation”, the movie, on your way to Wally World. Breaking down 1,000 miles away from home, on an unfamiliar highway, with 3 hungry kids who have watched “Despicable Me” 4 times and who will only talk in Minion and demand bananas for lunch can wear on you. And, finding yourself at the mercy of whatever garage is within affordable towing distance is not a fun adventure especially when faced with changing hotel reservations and hoping to find a bug-free motel while waiting for the part to

ship in from Los Angeles. Let’s talk about what you can do to tilt your odds towards the memorable family bonding trip and away from Wally World. First, go to your trusted garage for a Road Trip Inspection. Customer friendly garages will do inspections for free. Get that inspection at least 2 weeks before your trip so you have time for any needed maintenance or repairs and to drive your car for a while to make sure everything else is ok. Please don’t plan to leave the day after a major repair. You wouldn’t run a marathon the day after heart surgery. Next, are you a member of a Road Service Protection Program such as AAA or one your insurance company may have? You can get free or discounted towing, assistance changing a flat tire, jump starting dead batteries, gas to get you to the next station, and even bail money if you can believe that. Our advice – don’t leave home without a road service protection plan. Last, if your car has over 120,000 miles, as strange as it may sound, consider renting a car for your Road Trip. If the mileage is getting up there, many parts are approaching their limit even though it’s driving fine. Daily driving is usually short trips which are easy on your

car’s aging parts. Road trips are endurance tests that can turn slight weaknesses into smoking failures. Rule of thumb - 4 hours or more of continuous highway driving will bring out weaknesses in cars that otherwise have been very dependable. “Rotating parts” – like alternators and power steering pumps - are relentlessly spinning on road trips for long periods at high temperatures. A Road Trip Inspection can’t guarantee a problem free trip, but can help you decide if there are parts that need to be replaced or are still good enough to risk the long trip, or if you should be searching Priceline for a rental car. We are eager to hear about your car concerns. Is your car acting up or have you wondered about how some part of your car works? Drop us a note at Marty.labarbera@cbauto.net, and we will offer our honest opinion. Christian Brothers Automotive, where we care for your family by caring for your family car.
