Drowning Prevention: Learn How to Prevent Needless Child Deaths During National Drowning Prevention Month, learn tips for water safety in and out of the home and share them with other parents and caregivers By Kelley Parris Executive Director, Children’s Board of Hillsborough County Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the Tampa Bay area. In last five years, more than 40 children under the age of 6 have died from drowning in our region. Six of those deaths occurred in 2016. Drowning can happen to any child, anywhere, at any time. The danger is not limited to pools and beaches – there are potential hazards in and around your home that can also put children at risk. During National Drowning Prevention Month, take a moment to learn about the dangers of drowning and how you can help prevent a child’s death.
Home water safety tips: • Be aware of hidden hazards. A child can drown in as little as 1 inch of water, meaning even something as small as your pet’s water bowl can pose a drowning risk. Keep items such as pet bowls, buckets, baby pools, or any other container holding water away from access to children. • Secure the bathrooms in your home. Keep bathroom doors closed and toilet lids down when not in use. Consider using grip and twist door knob covers on all bathroom doors and toilet lid safety locks on all toilets for additional layers of protection. • Supervise bathtime. Children under the age of 1 are most likely to drown in bathtubs, toilets and buckets. Never leave a child alone in the bathtub. Any time a child is bathing there should be close adult supervision. • Don’t lose sight. Two-thirds of children who drown in pools were last seen inside the home. Nearby canals and retention ponds pose a similarly dangerous risk. Keep front and back doors locked and be sure to monitor young children, especially during any gatherings with family or friends where adults may be distracted.
Pool safety tips: • Stay alert. Child drowning often happens silently, without any splashing or calling out for help, making it easy for a drowning child to Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles
go unnoticed until it’s too late. Always remain vigilant around water. • Designate a “water watcher.” Lack of adult supervision in and around the water is the No. 1 reason children die from drowning. An adult should be assigned to keep their eyes on the child at all times when they are in or near water. The watcher must avoid distraction, especially by phone calls, texting or using other electronic devices. • Be within arm’s reach. Young children can drown in as little as 20 seconds. When infants and toddlers are in or around water, an adult should be within arm’s reach and close enough to rescue the child if needed. • Never rely on floatation devices. There is no substitute for supervision – not even flotation devices, such as water wings, inner tubes, or even life vests. • Enclose your pool and create barriers so children can’t access it. Be sure your pool and any pool your child visits follows all legal requirements for barriers and locks. It's recommended
that pools have isolation fencing with self-closing, self-latching locks that are out of reach from small children.
Other ways to be water smart: • Learn CPR. CPR is a proven lifesaver and it’s easy to become certified. Organizations such as the Children’s Board Family Resource Centers, and the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Foundation offer free CPR classes. • Teach children to swim from an early age. The risk of drowning is reduced 88 percent when the child is enrolled in formal swimming lessons. Take advantage of programs that offer swim lessons in your community. For example, The Children’s Board of Hillsborough County’s Mobile Water Safety Team provides free swim lessons and water safety education in local community and apartment complex pools. Drowning deaths in young children must end, and you can help. Educate friends, neighbors,

babysitters, grandparents and other potential caregivers about the dangers of drowning and the measures they can take today to keep children safe around water. Every member of our community – not just parents – bears the responsibility of educating themselves and others on water safety tips to eliminate the death of a child that is 100 percent preventable. Hollywood Body Wraps By Carla Dubis First of all, let me start by saying that before I sat down with Hollywood Body Wraps Owner, Dalia Cedeno, I was a little bit skeptical about the whole concept of “Body Wraps.” I ignorantly believed they would only make you lose water weight, which you would easily gain back in a matter of weeks. Served with homemade salsa, Mexican rice, refried beans and your choice of corn or flour tortillas. From the “Griddle Me This” section you will definitely want to try their famous Tiki Toast. It consists of three extra thick slices of sweet Hawaiian bread, dipped in egg batter and grilled on the griddle, ladled with
fresh blueberries and strawberries sprinkled with coconut and topped with caramel drizzle. Yum! A best-loved menu item of kids are the Nutella Crepes. Meet award winning race car driver Robin Bonanno, a true inspiration and exemplar woman that will make you feel you can do anything you set your mind to! Bonanno is also a race car Instructor for both SCCA and was a professional instructor for Richard Petty Enterprises, an accomplished Business Owner and Manager, a snow ski instructor, a devoted wife and a breast cancer survivor and warrior amongst many other things. ”Racing is an endurance sport,” Bonanno said. “I have raced with a broken leg. A little more than a year ago, I raced in the middle of radiation for breast cancer.” If you ever have the pleasure of meeting Robin and engaging in conversation with her, you will quickly realize you are talking to the face of determination. There’s nothing stopping her… not even cancer. She is as strong-willed as she is courageous and her energy is both contagious and intoxicating. Bonanno fought back from her diagnoses and now cherishes the relationships she made along the process, including the one she developed with her treating physician and surgeon, Dr. Charles Cox. Dr. Cox is a world renowned research and education Doctor. The Comprehensive Breast Cancer Program at the University of Florida was initiated in 1984 under his direction. In 1986, Doctor Cox moved the program to the Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute at the University of South Florida. He and his colleagues spearheaded the research and training in the technique for Lymphatic Mapping and Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy in breast cancer patients. Along with the pathology
colleagues, they developed the Intra-Operative Touch Preparation Cytology for the evaluation of surgical margins. With these techniques, they have experienced high success rates in breast conservation and lymph node sparing. Since Robin is now cancer-free for over two years her team’s goal for 2017, 2018 is to gain recognition for Robin’s favorite charity “Dr. Cox’s Breast Cancer Research Charity.” This foundation is administered under the vast umbrella of USF’s (University of South Florida) foundation.
