Albert Family Orthodontics, Where Beautiful Smiles are Always in Style!

By Marcy Sanford The Genesis Schools have many points of pride. One hundred percent of their graduating seniors go to college, many with academic scholarships and earned college credit. The school is accredited by FCIS – one of the most rigorous school accreditation associations in the U.S. In every grade, Genesis students are academically two grades ahead of their peers at other schools. Their girls’ basketball team won its conference championship for the 6th year in a row. One of their students went to the International Science Fair recently. Throughout the school you see evidence of students’ love of learning. But one of the things Head of School Dr. Melissa Nurrenbrock is most proud of is a bulletin board outside her office filled with pictures of families. “These are photos See “Genesis Schools” on page 34.

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

From The Editor Kim Thomas

Aloha & Aloha as We Say Goodbye and Hello! I love the word Aloha because it means both hello and goodbye. It’s an appropriate word this month for us here at Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles because as I say Aloha on my way out to experience new adventures, editor Carla Dubis says Aloha as she comes in to take over editing the publications that I’ve cared so much about throughout my years working for Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles of East Lake, of Odessa/Lutz/Land O’ Lakes, and of Trinity. Carla has a passion for graphic arts and designing layouts, as well as writing, and I’ve caught myself looking over her shoulder to see what magic she’s working while laying out the New Tampa and South Tampa editions of Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles. I know readers will enjoy Carla’s fresh ideas, and can look forward to receiving the same quality, community-oriented publication. It has been an honor to write and edit for this publication and to meet so many of the business owners who

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

have advertised throughout the years, many of whom have consistently been with Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles from the start of each of seven publications. I am so grateful to publishers Tim and Doreen Selby for trusting in me to edit East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles, which first delivered to mailboxes in May 2008. Not long after, they asked me to edit their Trinity Area publication, and then in 2010, when they expanded to the Odessa/Lutz/Land O’ Lakes Area, I was eager to be on board. I am proud to have been a part of this publication, which has hit some milestones requiring some changes. The name change for one – Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles is reflective of the major growth it’s had, now with seven publications reaching approximately 130,000 homes and businesses in the Tampa Bay Area. I’ve loved my job! It feels great to help local businesses gain recognition and to have a platform to help bring attention to important local issues.

While I’ve been busy writing about businesses in N. Pinellas and W. Pasco, my husband Jack has been building our family business in Dade City. Along with Jack’s brother Steve Thomas (the major shareholder), we are part owners of Surecrete Design Products, a manufacturer of decorative concrete supplies. Our son Sawyer and daughter-in-law Madi also work at Surecrete and our youngest, Axel, recently started his own decorative concrete company, AT Decorative Concrete. Our oldest, Katie, is now a real estate agent and looks forward to continuing writing for this publication as she’s done for 11 years. My focus turns to helping my children in their business endeavors, and while Jack says he doesn’t need me at his office (he must be scared!), I look forward to accompanying him on some of his business trips, which have taken him to places like China, Africa, Trinidad and Canada. The last trip I took with him was to Hawaii! I’ll say Aloha now, and thank you!

K and K Parrot Supplies: Everything Your Feathered Friend Needs By Marcy Sanford K and K Parrot Supplies recently opened a new retail store at 4608 Land O’ Lakes Boulevard. For more than 13 years the online retailer has been providing bird owners and lovers with high quality toys, food, and accessories at competitive prices and now, with their brick and mortar location, they are able to serve their customers and their birds even better and continuing to live up to their slogan to provide feathered friends with everything they need to live happy, healthy lives. If you are a new bird owner, K and K Parrot Supplies owners Kathy and Karen are a wealth of knowledge. They owned a breeding aviary in Delaware for 10 years before entering the pet supply business but even before that Kathy was in love with birds. “My first pet bird was a cockatiel.

10

After that, the birds I kept as pets got bigger and bigger.” Kathy now owns three parrots and is happy to share her expertise from years as a pet bird owner and breeder. One area where she sees some misconceptions among pet bird owners is when it comes to food. “The quality of bird food has become so much better than it was years ago. Parrots and bigger birds can live up to 80 years but with the high quality food available now, they may have a longer life span. Many people think it is ok to just feed seeds to birds but good quality food is very important or the bird can get sick.” K and K Parrot Supplies carry the full lines of high quality foods by Hari, Volkman, and Higgins. They even carry both the TOP’s and Harrison’s lines of organic foods. If your bird is a picky eater or has food allergies, Kathy and Karen are happy to special order any type of food your favorite bird might need.

Parrots and exotic birds of all kinds of feathers can be found at K and K “Parrots and other birds make great pets,” says Karen. “They all have different personalities and when you talk and interact with them they become amazing companions. Like any animal you have to give them love, attention, and care.” Kathy and Karen are happy to help bird owner with tips on how to best care for them. Kathy even takes notes for each customer so she can help them remember what they

bought the last time they were in the store. K and K Parrot Supplies stocks foraging and enrichment toys and cages of all sizes to help keep your feathered friend happy and occupied. Monthly wing clipping will help keep your pet bird safe if he or she spends time outside his or her cage. With this procedure birds are still able to exercise their muscles while easily moving around the house and being able to coast to a safe landing. This

important procedure is best handled by an expert. Kathy and Karen are happy to be able to provide this service to their customers along with nail trimming. Most people do not feel comfortable doing this on their own and Kathy and Karen have years of experience. They can ensure your bird is groomed properly and safely.

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

Karen and Kathy are very active in the community and are happy to be able to donate food to local rescue organizations. K and K Parrot Supplies literally has everything you need for birds of all sizes from conures and cockatiels to cockatoos and macaws. They sell food in bulk for larger breeds and even

carry bird food for wild birds. Also available is handfeeding formula for baby birds. K and K Parrot Supplies’ online store is always open. They offer free delivery on orders of $50 and more. You can also order online and pick your order up at their retail store.

K and K Parrot Supplies, located at 4608 Land O’ Lakes Blvd, is open Tues. and Thurs. from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.; Wed. and Fri., 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Sat., 10 a.m. – noon; and by appointment. For information or to place an order, visit KandKParrotSupplies.com or call 302-354-4843.

Dale Webb Roofing Longstanding Local Company Believes in Old Fashioned Service By Katie Thomas Exceeding standards in the industry and putting the community first has been the priority and mission of Dale Webb Roofing for nearly three decades. For the past 28 years Dale Webb Roofing has provided lasting, high-quality roofing services in our community that include new installations and replacement roofing, including shingle, metal and flat roofing, as well as roofing repairs, restorations, and solar attic fan installations. The Dale Webb Roofing team upholds their dedication to providing neighbors with exceptional customer service, quality products and honest work. This locally owned company has earned a stellar reputation throughout Pasco County and beyond for having trustworthy, dependable service. “My work is my name and I believe in upholding the great reputation

12

I have built for myself and my family,” says owner Dale Webb. “I feel lucky to have been in the business for a substantial amount of time. The life expectancy of a roof is usually about 20 years, and since I’ve been in the community for so long, I have had the chance to work with families who I helped over twenty-odd years ago. It feels good to know people remember your service and name.” A New Port Richey native, Dale has the experience, knowledge and quality assurance you need when dealing with the roof over your family’s home. Dale was born in 1960 at Tarpon General Hospital (New port Richey did not yet have the wonderful hospital community it does now). He grew up a true New Port Richey kid, playing baseball, enjoying the beautiful Pasco County land and reaching towards adulthood throughout the 60s and 70s, during a time of unlocked

doors, muscle cars and a tight-knit community looking out for one another. Dale learned the roofing and construction trade during his teen years, and in 1989, at the age of 28, he obtained his roofing license and opened Dale Webb Roofing, Inc. Ever since, he has offered his services at fair value, with the highest standards of ethics to the good community he considers his lifetime home. Married to another New Port Richey native, Dr. Florenda Fortner, Dale and his wife come from families who value community and working in businesses that help others. Dale has always worked under Dale Webb Roofing and has even kept the same phone number for 28 years! His company has successfully completed over 5,000 roofing jobs, both residential and commercial. Dale Webb Roofing doesn’t outsource work to subcontractors; they don’t need to because the company has a great team. Foreman Mike Rueker has been with Dale Webb Roofing for over 25 years, and none of the employees have been there less than ten years! Office manager Sharon Gillispie has been with the company for 18 years and knows the ins-and-

JULY 2017

outs of dealing with homeowner’s insurance companies as well as permitting, making sure everything runs smoothly for their customers. Dale Webb Roofing is a licensed and insured state roofing contractor, and you can trust that you are receiving superior service. Dale explained to me that when having someone come into your home for construction or working on your roof, you should always ask to see their licensing. “Anyone on the up-and-up will not be offended if you request to see their eligibility,” says Dale. “We have recently been seeing that many of the consumers we have worked with in the past year have been previously ripped off or received work by an unlicensed contractor. One over $20,000 even! Be careful of Craigslist-type contractors and always check your roofer’s licensing!” Dale provides all estimations himself for free and you will always see him on the jobsite, ensuring quality control. Dale Webb Roofing always keeps a clean workspace and works efficiently, keeping all safety precautions foremost in mind. Dale is a member of the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce and is an Accredited Business

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

by the Better Business Bureau. He is GAF Certified, as well. Local homeowners, who have worked with Dale Webb, love him! Eric F. gives a rave review, saying, “No one wants to get a new roof. When you realize you need one, the panic sets in – you ask yourself questions like, ‘Will this cost me an arm and a leg?’ ‘Will the company still be around in a few years in case there’s an issue?’ And most importantly, ‘Will I get my money’s worth?’ My wife and I have been dreading having to get a new roof for six years - we had a leak that we managed by placing a bucket

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

in the attic. The roof looked horrible, the color was nasty, and although we wanted to paint our ugly colored home for years, we didn’t want to do it until we got a new roof and we knew it would be expensive (or so we thought). Well, the time finally came and we started to research roofing companies and obtaining quotes. Imagine our surprise when 2 of the 4 companies (well-rated) who came out never even sent us a quote after our meeting – it was like they weren’t all that interested in our business. The two others who came out did quote us, and they were very close in price and online ratings/reviews. But Dale

Webb Roofing impressed us the most. Why, you might ask? The answer is …Dale Webb himself! He came out to meet with us, do the quote, make suggestions and instilled in us trust and confidence. Word-of-mouth from a few other people when I mentioned his name helped to seal the deal. The warranty he offered helped our decision as well as the longevity of his business, as well as the makeup of his crew. These are men who have been with the same company, working together, for years – some of them over 10-15 years! That says something. From start to finish, Dale Webb Roofing exceeded our expectations. They

were never late, they kept the disturbance and noise to a minimum, they cleaned up very well, and our roof is fantastic! It feels like we have a new home. We can be pretty picky, and I rarely write reviews, but I can 100% recommend Dale Webb Roofing to anyone in need of a new roof. We made the right choice, and I hope you do too!” If you expect quality, craftsmanship, professionalism and fantastic service, then you have got to meet the Dale Webb Roofing team. Dale Webb is a great guy with a mindset for running a great business. He wants to give his community the best work available at fair pricing and build relationships that last a lifetime. His 28 years in the business says something for his company’s longevity, trustworthiness and quality of work. Call Dale Webb Roofing Inc. at (727) 847-7524 or visit www.dalewebbroofing.com for more information. Dale Webb Roofing is licensed, bonded and insured (LIC#CCC1326918). Office hours are 8 a.m.–4 p.m., Mon. – Fri. and the office is located at 5610 Grand Blvd. in New Port Richey.

Rebecca W. says, “I have been using Cornerstone for a couple of years now. I started off on my primary house with plumber Kiel installing an iron/water filtration for iron in my well. I then had an electrician install additional outlets at my home and a HVAC agent service my a/c system. I was talked into buying the service plan by Kiel and I’m so happy I did. I am getting quality work at a discount. Today I have my dad’s rental property getting flipped, because well it needs to and he can’t do it anymore due to dementia. I hired some contractors to fix up the property (redo floors, tile work, and even install cabinets). One contractor even claimed to be a prior plumber and assured me he could conquer the job with quality. Well…thank goodness Jerry, a Cornerstone plumber, came to my rescue because my so-called plumber had no clue what he is doing. Jerry is taking the time to make sure the plumbing is done right and to county code! Going above and beyond the call of duty. Every time I have called cornerstone for electric, plumbing, or HVAC it has always been top-notch service. Thank you!” With Cornerstone you always receive professionalism, quality work and quality products. Cornerstone Pros is great for so many reasons: customer satisfaction, quality and affordability, peace of mind, and NO high-pressure sales tactics. Selling your product at the right price is one of the most important keys to a successful business. You will understand your costs of doing business and relate these costs to an understanding of gross profit, margin and markup. Seminar will be held at Regency Park Branch Library at 9701 Little Road in New Port Richey.

Stephen Unger, DC with Holly Ridge, DC and Edward Leonard, DC at Florida Wellness Medical Group’s 10-Year Anniversary event established patients can receive care even if you can’t make it into their office. Dr. Unger explains, “If our patients are too sick or too busy to come into the office, they can have a HIPPA compliant e-visit with one of our doctors or nurses. If the doctor determines that they need medicine, we can have it shipped to their home within hours.” Allergy Treatments: If allergies have you feeling miserable, Florida Wellness is home to experts who can help you. Once they’ve tested and de-

termined what you are allergic to, they can treat you with drops instead of shots. Dr. Unger says the liquid drops are easily ingested and will eventually help you no longer be allergic to the mold, plants, or animals that make you sneeze. Medical Weight Loss & Hormone Replacement Therapy: Another important medical service Florida Wellness provides is medical weight loss and hormone replacement therapy. “We have a lot of patients come in and want to know if their testosterone lev-

els are low,” says Dr. Unger. “We do a full panel of blood work to determine what hormones are low and then base our therapy on the results. Often we treat our patients with a combination of diet modifications, exercise, and hormone therapy.” Florida Wellness also helps patients determine the best medical weight loss plan and guides and supports them every step of the way with weekly check-ins. Convenient Locations & Hours: Florida Wellness has five locations across Hillsborough and Pasco Counties from downtown Tampa to Zephyrhills, Trinity to South Tampa and their newest Carrollwood location. As a patient of Florida Wellness you can visit the location that is most convenient to you. This makes it easy for you to get expert medical care no matter where you work or live. The downtown location even has early morning and late evening hours to accommodate your work schedule. Many of the clinics also offer weekend hours. She stresses, “It is important for me to be respectful of our customers’ time so I will always arrive at the time we set.” In addition to always arriving in a timely manner, BJ says that they can keep their prices low because they are a family owned business and not a franchise. She explains, “What many

people don’t understand is that franchises are often forced to charge more for their services because they have to maintain their franchise fees, but not with Grout Tech.” Not only does Grout Tech keep its rates competitive, but the company will also honor any other quote as long as it is in writing. Carla Bartow, a satisfied customer, shares her experience, “When BJ came out to give us a quote, she looked at the job and I could tell immediately that she knew what she was talking about. We had our family room, kitchen and dining room re-grouted. They also regrouted the tub, shower and base of

our toilet in our bathroom. They were fantastic! Not only were they professional and reliable but they also completed the job much faster than we had anticipated.” Repeat customer John C. says, “I had Grout Tech come out to my place three years ago. The service was excellent and the price was great too. I recently rehired Grout Tech to come out to complete my other two bathrooms, which they’ll begin working on in June. I chose Grout Tech once again because their professionalism and skill is unbeatable.” Another satisfied client, John F. says, “My wife and I had a bad experience with a grout service

company we hired off Craigslist. The work was terrible and they lacked professionalism. My wife found Grout Tech and we were so happy the connection was made. Grout Tech worked miracles on our floors and solved all our grout and tile problems. They performed work for us back in 2014. We loved that they were great with our pets and felt really comfortable having them in our home working. We hired them again in 2016 due to their excellent service and we were again completely satisfied with the service they provided. I wouldn’t consider using any company other than Grout Tech.” If you need assistance in cleaning and sealing tile and grout, re-coloring grout, re-caulking showers and tubs, and repairing grout and broken tiles Grout Tech is at your service! If you are tired of scrubbing until your hands are sore trying to clean stained, old grout, call Grout Tech today! By Bob Dalles Greetings Friends… My name is Bob Dalles, better known as Bob The Computer Guy. My goal is to help my readers better understand computer systems, wired and wireless networks, information technology (IT) devices like phones and pads; and most importantly, keeping you as safe as possible when you interact with the internet and other networks. A little bit about me. I want you to know that you are dealing with an individual who draws on decades of experience and sincerely wants to share this knowledge with you. When I say decades I am not talking about only twenty-some years, as much as I hate to admit it, were looking more closely at forty years. My computer experience goes back to the latter half of the 1970’s before the surge of the personal computers industry. Remember computer punch cards? If you don’t, then good for you my friends, you are “soooo” lucky. Compared to today’s methods of interacting with computers you would probably not be a big fan of punch cards. Even if you enjoy the novelty of playing around with older technology, you would quickly get tired of the

tedium of using computer punch cards on a daily basis. In addition to my approximately forty-some years of technology experience, I have owned and operated computer consulting corporations since 1995. Plus, I have been an IT Instructor for a well-known technical college for the last eight years. I continue to teach as well as run my computer corporation on a daily basis. I want this column to not only be my column but our column. On a regular basis, I will provide you with topics I hope you will find interesting. However, most importantly, I would love for you to submit questions on IT topics that interest you. Thank you for taking the time to read this and getting to know me better. Got a tech question? Email me at TechTalk-TBNL@BobTheComputerGuy.NET. Questions will be selected by the popularity of a topic and answered in this column. “Dr. Albert” Continued from page 1 their families with a wonderful experience every visit. The offices are friendly and inviting with a caring staff that gives personalized attention to patients, focusing on putting them at ease and making sure the environment is positive and happy. Both locations of Albert Family Orthodontics provide a snack bar, coffee, games and iPads for patients and their families to enjoy. But what patients love most about going to Albert Family Orthodontics is Dr. Albert himself. He is sincerely nice, with an upbeat personality, and he provides exceptional care to patients of all ages. While it’s never too late to get the smile you want, it’s best to start early with children. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial orthodontic evaluation at the first sign of orthodontic problems or by age 7. At this early age, Dr. Albert may not recommend orthodontic treatment, but he can inform parents of the most advantageous time to begin treatment if necessary.

30

Trays With No Impressions, YES! Remember those uncomfortable impression trays with the yucky goo? In most cases, they are no longer necessary. One of the most recent advancements in orthodontic treatments is the use of the iTero intraoral scanner. Dr. Albert uses the iTero wand to scan a patient’s mouth instead of using trays to create impressions, which makes for a far more comfortable experience. “It is possible to go through the whole treatment without needing impressions,” says Dr. Albert. “We can digitally send the scans to the to lab instead of sending impressions through the mail, which makes the process quicker. The scans can also be used to create 3D printed Guardian retainers, which provides four total retainers for the patients.” Patients love the option to save money by buying extra retainers retainers up front, since most pre-teens and teens end up needing extra retainers due to losing them. Dr. Albert says it ends up costing less to purchase the 4 digital retainers than purchasing one regulat replacement retainer later– and you don’t have to come back to the office for extra appointments to get them made!

Getting to Know Dr. Albert A lifelong local, Dr. Albert graduated from East Lake High School and earned his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from The University of Florida. He’s been honored with numerous awards and is a member of several dental associations, and not only does he strive to be a positive force within the dental community, he sets a great example for his young patients by volunteering his dental services through mission trips with his church, Cypress Meadows Community Church (CMCC) of Safety Harbor under the direction of Pastor Douglas Poole. The children and adults that he is able to help on dental mission trips live in remote areas that would not have dental services provided without the help of dentists volunteering their time. Dr. Albert served on mission trips with CMCC to Haiti in 2014 and 2015, taking a break in 2016, and this year, just returned from a mission trip to Nakuru, Kenya where he and others provided dental and humanitarian services to the children at Springs of Hope Orphanage. wanted to help and donated children’s clothing, while many dentists in the area donated toothbrushes and toothpaste. It was truly a community effort that made a difference in another continent. While it’s important to Dr. Albert to make a difference globally through dental mission trips when he’s able, his patients take priority and he finds ways to make orthodontics fun for them. When you visit Albert Family Orthodontics’ Facebook page, you’ll find “Braces Off” celebration photos with patients and you’ll find that he holds fun contests for patients. Since orthodontic treatment is a long-term commitment for preteens and teenagers, the contests keep patients engaged during the process. Each year, Albert Family Orthodontics’ patients get excited about the Summer of Music and Smiles Summer Concert Series. This year, patients can enter to win tickets to some awesome concerts including Shawn Mendes’ Illuminate World Tour, as well as oldschool favorites Paula Abdul, Boys II Men, and New Kids on the Block – one patient will win four tickets for each concert. Concert tickets aren’t the only things featured in contests.

Multiple winners receive iTunes gift cards every month. There are movie gift card contests, and every year Albert Family Orthodontics invites all patients to their yearly AstroSkate party. Dr. Albert is dedicated to the community where serves and lives, and provides opportunities for his patient base to improve the lives of others through charities such as Toys for Tots. He also provides an annual babysitting certification program through Red Cross free of charge for patients. Completion of the program includes certification in CPR and first aide, and this knowledge can help patients create their own positive impact in the community. Dr. Albert gets his young patients to think communally as well and offers them a chance to help their schools earn money by encouraging friends and family to vote for their school in his yearly “Making a Change & Helping Local Schools” campaign. The top three voted schools are put in a drawing for a first place $1,000 donation, and a second and third place donation of $250. New Patients: What to Expect New patient evaluations are al-

“Genesis Schools” Continued from page 1 of former students who graduated from Genesis and are now bringing their children here for school,” she explains. To Dr. Nurrenbrock the fact that alumni are excited to bring their own children to Genesis School is a sure sign of lessons well taught. “My children attend Genesis Schools because of my experience attending Genesis myself as a child,” said Mrs. Christine Tury. “The teachers are outstanding. The parents are a wonderful group of people and very involved in all the school functions. I have 3 sons there who I couldn’t imagine attending anywhere else.” This year, Genesis Schools will be celebrating its 40th anniversary. Founded in 1977 as a preschool, soon after the school expanded to include an elementary school and a second location. In 1993 Genesis Preparatory School was founded to include middle and high school students and in 2003 Longleaf Learning Center became part of the Genesis family. The Genesis preschool curriculum is based on the developmental needs of young children and includes instruction in academic readiness skills, phonics, art, music, physical education, and creative experiences. Students are taught in a nurturing environment that also provides positive character education. The caring and patient staff knows how to turn everyday happenings in the life of young children into teachable moments. Parents of students entering preschool or Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) are encouraged to visit the preschools in January so they can get on the waiting list for open enrollment in March. At every grade level, the teachers at Genesis Schools work hard to pro-

One annual event that everyone looks forward to is George Washington Day where children dress up in colonial dress, get to taste Washington’s favorite lemonade recipe, learn his favorite dance – the Virginia Reel – and visit a replica of a Colonial street where they can visit stations to practice calligraphy, make corn husk dolls, learn about history, and more. “When we visited Washington, D.C. this year, the guides were really impressed with our kids’ history knowledge,” said Jackie Maness. “When you have fun events like George Washington Day, the kids really remember what they’ve learned and are engaged and excited. Our teachers and administration are always coming up with new and fun ideas to enhance our students’ learning.” “Opal is in 6th Grade at Genesis Prep, and she started Pre-K at Genesis West campus when she was 3 years old,” said the Barile Family. “We chose Genesis because of its long-standing, excellent reputation in the community. We absolutely fell in love with Genesis and all it had to offer its students. We are very thankful, appreciative and delighted that Genesis has been a part of our family now for 8 1/2 years. Genesis has helped to shape Opal into an independent and well-rounded person.
