The only difference is the hesitation or preconceived notion a shopper might have about buying lease-to-own. Aaron’s General Manager Michael Vasquez’ goal is to banish this misinformation and help people learn the benefits inside of the free-

From The Editor Carla Dubis First of all, I want to start by introducing myself. My name is Carla Dubis, I am the Creative Director and new editor of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles. I am 31 years old and I was born and raised in Venezuela, my mother is Italian and my Father, who unexpectedly passed away 3 months ago, was from Poland. What can I say? I am a mutt! I am fluent in English, Spanish and Italian. I moved from Venezuela to Tampa when I was 16 years old to attend UT. I have a Bachelors in Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Tampa and a Masters in Education with a concentration in Instructional Technology and Web Design from USF. Go Bulls! :) I have called Tampa my home since 2003, and even though at first I thought to myself “As soon as I graduate I am out of here!” I fell in love with this city and I have no intentions of ever leaving. I have lived in Harbour Island for the past 10 years and I have seen this city grow exponentially in the past decade. I have seen so many of spots close its doors throughout the years, but so many other businesses and restaurants have opened, making this medium sized city, feel like a big metropolis. I never get

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

bored, there’s always something fun to do here. From an art festival to a margarita festival, from broadway plays to fantastic concerts and so much more! I am a big foodie, a craft beer lover, a caffeine addict and a big lightning fan! I spend most of my weekends eating all over Tampa Bay, fishing with my fiance (Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles’ Publisher Matt Selby), hanging out with my family (who moved to Tampa 5 years ago after I bragged about it so much!), rooting for our local sports teams (go lightning!), or watching a movie. Whenever I get the opportunity to travel, which is one of my biggest passions, I find myself missing Tampa a lot (something I never really thought I would experience!) because it’s home to me now, and because I got spoiled with all the things this amazing city has to offer... Here we have it all! We have beautiful beaches, amazing weather (most of the time, that humidity though!), luxury boutiques, fantastic shopping malls, cultural events, art festivals, music festivals and some of the best restaurants I have ever had the pleasure of trying. The best part? you are only a short drive away. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who

believed in me and trusted me with the positions I currently have, the Selby Family. Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles has been owned and operated by the Selby Family for over 25 years, and I am very lucky to be the newest addition to the family! I could not be happier God put me in the path of this family, they are seriously the most amazing, loving, hard-working and honest individuals I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Working with them is as rewarding as it is fun. So what can I offer Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles? Besides my graphic and web design skills, I will definitely bring my decent grammar and editing ability and my personal insight about all things Tampa Bay.. I will be keeping you up to date with the latest news and fun events happening in the area, I will tell you about the best restaurants and hot spots to visit... after all, I have been living here for over a decade, so I know a thing or two about Tampa! Longoria Looking to Finish what Boggs Started

By Jake Berry

If you look out over the left center field fence at Tropicana Field you will see a familiar sight. Just over section 147 and beside Ducky’s Sports Bar in the 162 Landing is the iconic number 42 plastered on the wall. Jackie Robinson’s retired number is a fixture in all 30 major league ballparks and while the Rays have just a 20-year history, Robinson’s number isn’t the only one enshrined in the Trop. Just below it is the number 12 and it belongs to a man that helped put the expansion franchise on the map during its 1998 inaugural season. That number 12 belongs to Hall of Famer, Wade Boggs. Boggs is an AL East icon. He dons the Boston Red Sox cap in his Cooperstown plaque and his lone World Series ring comes from his time with the New York Yankees. While the list of accomplishments in the Chicken Man’s career goes on and on, there is one more feat, one more accomplishment that adds to the 12 time all-star’s legacy. The Tampa native signed a two year deal with his hometown Tampa Bay Devil Rays before the franchise’s inaugural season. Entering his age 40 seasons, Boggs had nothing left to prove. He was almost guaranteed a spot in the Hall of Fame, he had his World Series ring, he had won five batting titles, and he played for two of the most historic franchises in the game. Still, Boggs took the opportunity in front of him, an opportunity many players dream of, and he took on the challenge of helping establish a new major league ball club in his own backyard. As a member of the then Devil Rays, Boggs eclipsed many milestones, including his 3000th hit. However, nothing was more important than the impact he had on the fan base and the community as major league baseball was finally brought to Tampa/St. Pete. Boggs laid the foundation for 18 years of ballplayers to come after him, and while the Chicken Man held down third base for 152 games during his Devil Rays career, there is a player manning the hot corner now that is looking to finish what Boggs started. Evan Longoria is the face of the Tampa Bay Rays franchise. When debating which players go on the Mount Rushmore of Tampa Bay baseball, Longoria is a unanimous choice amongst the fan base. The Rays made Longoria the third overall pick in the 2006 draft and he made his debut with the team just a year and a half later in April of 2008. After posting a .272 average Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

with 27 home runs, the 22 year old won the American League Rookie of the Year award and also made his first of three allstar teams. While the individual accolades were great, Longoria’s rookie year legacy really comes from him leading the squad to not only their winning season in franchise history, but also their first pennant and ultimately their only World Series appearance. Also a third baseman, Longoria plays a much different game at the plate than Boggs. While Boggs was known for his uncanny ability to slap the ball around the ballpark and find holes in the defense, Rays fans know Longoria for hitting the ball out of the ballpark. He is the only player in Rays history with more than 200 homers and will more than likely end his career over the 300 mark. That isn’t the only category Longoria leads. He is also the team’s all-time leader in doubles, runs batted in, at bats, games played, and there are several other records that he will likely break before his career is over. There are two iconic time periods in Rays history, the first couple of years when major league baseball was new to the area in the late 90’s and a decade later when the team went from worst to first and made their World Series run in 2008. Both of those periods were headed by two of the most iconic players in Rays history. Boggs was a Hall of Fame bound third baseman that was dangerous at the plate with a solid legacy in place. Longoria fits all of those characteristics, except his story remains unfinished. Wade Boggs helped to put the Tampa Bay Rays on the baseball map and Evan Longoria is looking to finish what he started by bringing a World Series title to Boggs’ hometown.

Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe By Matt Selby

AUGUST 2017

I was raised in the small town of Tarpon Springs, a beautiful and vibrant town with no shortage of Mediterranean and Greek influences. Since moving to Tampa a few years ago, I’ve developed a passion for the culinary arts and the experience that comes along with eating great food with family and friends. I love all kinds of cuisine but have a special place in my heart for Mediterranean. That’s is why, when I heard a new “fast casual” Mediterranean style concept café called Taziki’s was coming to Carrollwood, I was very excited. Before I get into my personal experience, let’s take a second to go over how Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe came to be in the first place. In 1997, Keith Richards and his wife Amy were vacationing in Greece where they discovered small-table Mediterranean cafés in which everyone in the community gathered together to connect around healthy flavors and to celebrate life! They enjoyed the food, but also observed a deeper kind of warmth and connection that moved them to say – “That’s what I want to spend my life doing.” But how do you capture the feeling of family and friends around the table, and the healthy Mediterranean lifestyle? Inspired, Keith and Amy returned home with a stack of photographs and a vision to import their experience by opening the first of many

Mediterranean cafes in 1998. They created a place free from the noise of the outside world and the fast pace of our busy demanding lives. They created a time to reconnect and bond over refreshing Mediterranean flavors. They designed a menu of interesting flavors and real homemade food. Through all these years, and with the addition of new Taziki’s across the country, they became a family of big-hearted foodies committed to making an impact in the community. The Carrollwood franchise is owned and operated by Sanjay Mehra, and his daughter Oorja is the Operations Manager. It’s very important for them to keep a family business style approach in everything they do. Oorja truly cares about how her family is viewed in the community and takes great pride in accommodating all the guests of Taziki’s. You can’t miss her smiling face either. Oorja is always happy to do whatever is needed to ensure the guests are taken care of and happy. “I enjoy getting to know everyone who comes in here! I honestly love my job and seeing how happy everyone is when they are enjoying the food that we are so passionate about. It really makes my job really rewarding,” says Oorja. Upon entering a new eatery I always do two things. First, I use the bathroom to wash my hands and while I’m in there I look around and judge the cleanliness of the place. If it’s disgusting, honestly, that’s where my experience

will end. I’m happy to report, Taziki’s restroom was very clean and when I walked out, I looked around the restaurant and noticed something… There wasn't a single Television to be found in the dining room, which was a refreshing surprise. The absence of distracting and loud TV sets around definitely gives guests the ability to pay attention to what’s really important; their cell phones… excuse me, I mean their friends and family at the table. In

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

On my first visit to Taziki’s I indulged on a few different items… I know, I know, it’s a tough life I have writing these stories… I started my experience with a sample of the Spicy Pimento Cheese made of grated sharp cheddar, mayo, diced red peppers and a hint of Tabasco sauce. The soft baked Pita triangles it was served with were the perfect compliment to the robust flavor! For more a main course, I went for a Mediterranean staple; The Grilled Lamb Gyro. Taziki’s doesn’t cut its meat off a spit like many restaurants that serve the sliced pieces of meat to patrons do. The cooks at Taziki’s actually grill fresh lamb meat to perfection each day before placing it in-between the delicious warm pita they serve. You may be thinking to yourself, “Wait a minute, that’s not authentic, the meat on a spit is how they do it in Greece...” Well, you

would be wrong. On a recent trip to Greece, I was laughed at when I tried to explain the type of Gyro’s I was used to eating in America. I found out from a local chef in a rural town that American’s started serving the “Meat Cone” style in Chicago. In fact, most Gyros’ in Greece are made of only pork with lamb being introduced more recently, but that’s a story for another time. Getting back to my Gyro experience at Taziki’s, I highly recommend you try it on your next visit. They have 6 or 7 different kinds of Gyros on the menu, but trust me, you can’t go wrong with the grilled lamb. It was seasoned to perfection and had a hint of lemon juice for added flavor that made for a very tasty yet mild taste. While at Taziki’s I also sampled the Grilled Salmon, and when I tell you there’s no other place where you can find this dish in Tampa for $12 and change, you know I’m not lying! This meal could easily go for double what they charge for the quality. Just take a look at the picture accompanying this article and tell me your mouth isn't starting to water! I

don’t even normally like Salmon and I’m hooked (no pun intended) now. I also had the Greek salad as my side, and absolutely loved their homemade dressing and crispness of the lettuce and greens. After all that food I felt like I was going to pop, but here comes Oorja with a big smile and an even bigger slice of her Dark Chocolate Cake made from scratch, and you know… there’s always room for dessert. I’m not even much of a dessert guy, but after one bite I knew this cake was trouble. I ended up eating the entire thing within seconds (don’t judge me). You’ll have to try it for yourself to see what I’m talking about, but trust me you’ll love it! My experience was fantastic and I highly recommend you and the whole family try Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe. It’s made to order, yet relatively fast service, great tasting food and easy on the wallet. What’s not to love? Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe 3825 Northdale Blvd Tampa Florida 33624 813-867-4747

Lash Spa Studio - It’s All About The Eyes! obtained her Tattoo Artist License after completing the microblading course at Lavish Beauty Academy. Cierra now manages both Lash Spa Studio Tampa locations, and she is known as the eyelash and microblading expert.

If only there was a way to save you time, help you achieve long, volumized eyelashes and give you perfectly shaped eyebrows that are always “on fleek”…. Well, there is! Lash Spa Studio located at 10418 N Dale Mabry Hwy, has the perfect solution that will give you the results you seek; Microblading and eyelash extensions! Lash Spa Studio owner, Kristen Schram, and General Manager, Cierra Resendez sat with me and gave me the 411 on these two increasingly popular services. After our talk and seeing some before and after photos, there’s no surprise why so many women love it. Kristen Schram was born and raised in Pittsburgh, It was there where she went to school, where she worked for many years and where she fell in love with eyelash extensions. She discovered Lash Spa Studio in Pittsburgh back in 2012, and she quickly became a loyal customer. “I have been getting eyelash extensions at Lash Spa Studio for over five years. During one of my trips to Florida to

see my parents, I realized I had no place to get my eyelashes done, so I opened two,” said Kristen. The previous Lash Spa Studio customer, turned territory owner, now owns the Carrollwood studio located at 10418 N Dale Mabry Hwy and the South Tampa studio located at 4004 S MacDill Ave #3, Tampa, FL 33611. “Starting off as a Lash Spa Studio client gave me a good grasp on priorities and what customers want,” Kristen said. “Now as an owner I can provide my clients with a more personable experience, because I truly understand their needs and expectations.” Cierra Resendez grew up in St. Petersburg and attended both St. Petersburg College and Daytona State College with a focus on a medical courses and business degree. It’s All About The Eyes! Similar to the ones you can get for your head, eyelash extensions are individual synthetic lashes that are meticulously attached to your natural existing lashes semipermanently. With proper care they can last about six weeks, with touch-ups needed every 2-3 weeks. “Just please do not get them wet or steamed in 24 hours,” said Cierra. Steamed? “Yes, it means no hot yoga, no saunas or hot baths for at least 24 hours,” she added. At Lash Spa Studio basic eyelash extensions are only $99. This classic procedure involves attaching one extension on each one of your natural eyelashes. If you are looking for extra volume, for $199 they will perform a specialized technique where they apply 2-5 extensions on each one of your natural eyelashes. “We hand make our

The Lash Spa Studio Team own eyelash volume ‘fans’ here, which consists of grabbing multiple lashes and putting them together in a specialized way so it creates full volume and gives our customers a more dramatic look without using as much adhesive,” said Cierra. Her knowledge and passion exudes with every word she says, that's why it comes to no surprise that Cierra and Lash Spa Studio have a huge number of 5 star reviews all over google and social media.

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

Valerie Miller, Lash Spa Studio customer, had this to say about her experience; “The ladies at Lash Spa Studio are pleasant and courteous. I have seen Cierra twice now and she is amazing. You can tell she is educated in this field, offering me lash facts and explaining what she was doing each step of the way. The studio itself is beautifully done and brand new. This is a great place to go pamper yourself. I love it.” The eyelash extension process it’s very enjoyable. You lie down in a comfortable bed and close your eyes for about an hour and a half, while Cierra or another professional certified technician attaches little “fans” to your existing natural lashes. According to Kristen clients sometimes fall asleep during the process. Extensions are completely customizable. Theres no “one size fits all” solution for eyelash extensions. First, you can choose your preferred length. The salon carries lengths from natural looking to Kim Kardashian length. Second, you get to pick your eyelash curl. A “J” curl offers a more natural look, while a “C” curl will give you a more dramatic effect.

Microblading - The New Hot Trend That’s Here to Stay Eyebrow trends come and go, from thin and sharp to a bushy “a la Cara Delevingne” look and basically everything in between. It doesn’t matter if you like them arched and feathered or straight and bold, your eyebrows are arguably one of the most important facial features, and one that women spend the most time working on. If you are not satisfied with the eyebrows you have, there are many ways to “fix”them, you can use brow gel, brow shadows, brow pencils and even brow tattooing. Now there’s a new revolutionary trend that delivers a more natural look with semipermanent results. Unlike the harsh sharpie-esque effects of permanent makeup, microblading is a revolutionary semipermanent cosmetic procedure that fills brows out and reshapes them by drawing on tiny lines that resemble real individual hairs. Microblading is perfect for those who want to reconstruct, better define, or fill-in overly plucked eyebrows, and it lasts about two years. “The procedure uses a especial tool to draw on individual hair strokes one by

one, giving the client a very natural look,” Cierra said. “I usually see customers twice — once for an initial appointment and then once the brow has healed for a touch-up.” The healing process varies for everyone and it can take up to 30 days. “We recommend a touch-up after 4 weeks but definitely before 12,” said Cierra. “We also provide an initial complimentary consultation where I go over the basics with each client, we discuss pigmentation, fullness, and overall desired look,” she added. When you come in for your first session, they prefer if you had your make up already done, so they get a better idea of the brow shape you like, but they can also work with you and help you choose the best customized shape for you.

Does it hurt? Before microblading begins, a topical numbing cream will be applied to your eyebrows and surrounding areas to minimize discomfort, followed by a especial anesthetic. If you’re hesitant about the procedure because you fear the process will be painful, Cierra assures you that “even though you may feel a little

For Ad Info 813-928-6124 • info@NNLFlorida.com

discomfort, it’s relatively painless and definitely worth it” and there’s absolutely no down time. So you will be selfie-ready immediately after the process! The price for perfectly shaped, maintenance-free eyebrows is $450, which includes the second touch-up. And if you come back before they completely fade in two years, let’s say you schedule another appointment after 18 months, they will give you a discounted rate of $250 when you come back. If you are ready to schedule an appointment at Lash Spa Studio Carrollwood call Kristen or Cierra at 813-280-2444 or visit lashspastudio.com to book online. There are no memberships, but a very good loyalty program. Lash Spa Studio will give you 50% off after your first 5 eyelash extension fills, and you can also get $10.00 off for referring a friend. Late Summer Snook Fishing It’s August and the fishing can be as hot as the weather on some days, and completely turn off on others. It can be a very frustrating time of year for many anglers in search of one of the most iconic gamefish in our waters; the Snook! I’ve been fishing my entire life and just like many of you, some days I catch fish until I’m tired of it, and somedays fishing is so slow I honestly get tired of fishing. I don’t care who you are or how vast your knowledge is, sometimes getting the fish to bite is a challenge. During the summer months, some fishing days are full of double digit catches and some days it’s next to impossible to even find the bait. But why? Well, many factors come into play but one of the most obvious, and sometimes overlooked factor is simply the heat. The water temps can reach over 90 degrees by noon and often times the fish will just shut off. They still have to eat, but most of the time, they choose the times of day that are a little more comfortable for them. In August, early morning or night fishing is going to be your best bet. Snook love an abundance of baitfish, moving current and warm water temperatures. They are opportunistic feeders who exert energy when needed but are completely happy stacking up in one place for hours. They stack up in areas where, you guessed it, a strong moving current will flush baitfish right in their face, producing an easy meal. They are also very structure-oriented, and even when you see them cruising the beach, they are usually just moving to their next spot near a drop off, mangrove bed, dock or other underwater habitat. High Tide Snook fishing differs from Low Tide Snook fishing as well. Think about it, how many times have you caught a fish and go back to that spot over and over. My guess is, you catch fish there again but not every time, and that can be frustrating. Why aren’t they always there? The short answer is, they are, just not always when you’re there. With a high tide, Snook enjoy deeper water near the mangroves and shorelines so they tend to hide out under the cover of the groves, ambushing pray as it swims by in the current. You can also find Snook under docks at this time. During a low tide, less water is near the shoreline so the Snook won’t be there. They tend to be in deeper channels and on drop off edges during the lower tides. This isn’t to say you can’t find an abundance of Snook in deeper channels or under bridges during high tide, it’s just more likely on a low. Even with all this information, if you don’t have the local knowledge of where the fish tend to be, you're going to spend a lot of time scouring miles of the dense mangrove shorelines of Florida. This is where hiring an experienced fishing guide can make your day on the water a lot more successful. I’ll be honest though, there’s days where we find the fish, all the conditions are right on paper, but they won’t eat. It happens, and anyone who says otherwise is just down right lying to you. If fishing was easy, it wouldn’t be so rewarding. The thrill of the hunt, the days that shut us out, and especially the days that a plan comes together and the fish are happy to cooperate, are what keep us addicted and coming back for more. Mr. Vinik’s Vision for Downtown Tampa By Michelle Naktin Born on March 22, 1959, everyone knew Jeffrey Vinik was going to be special, but I doubt they really knew just how incredible this New Jersey native would turn out to be. Mr. Vinik took the financial industry by storm by becoming the most prominent mutual fund manager when he led Fidelity Magellan in the 1990s. He made millions of dollars by taking chances on depreciated assets and after turning 50, he decided he wanted to make a change. Jeffrey told his wife Penny he had made the decision to buy a hockey team. Although shocked, Lightning Owner, Jeffrey Vinik Penny supported her husband’s decision, then Mr. Vinik did what made him a wealthy man: He did research. He read books on sports management, spoke to team owners around the country, met with N.H.L. Commissioner Mr. Bettman and even used Google to search “How to buy a hockey team.” When Jeff was ready in March 2010, he turned off the lights in his Boston office and became the owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning, a team that had won a Stanley Cup but sadly also had a parade of owners. This time was going to be different. Shortly after Mr. Vinik’s purchase of the Lightning, he began acquiring property surrounding Amalie Arena, where his hockey team plays. The area, once industrial, is now mostly parking lots and downtown waterfront property, and Mr. Vinik has big plans for the 30acre block. Channelside Bay Plaza, which Mr. Vinik owns, is a place where lots of lightning fans come together to get drinks and food before the games, but sadly the plaza has struggled financially for years. Many businesses on the plaza have closed their doors in the past 5 years, but restaurants such as Hooters, Thai Tani, Hablo Taco and Coldstone Creamery are still surviving. Vinik’s plans call for Channelside Bay Plaza to be demolished, with a park, office, retail and residential units to go in its place. Vinik’s proposal has more shops, restaurants, and businesses to be constructed across from Amalie Arena, where Ferg’s Live Bar and parking lots are located.

Discussions are still in the early stages, say officials and executives with Strategic Property Partners, the Tampa real estate company set up by Vinik and Cascade, a private capital fund launched by Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates. The development plan has quickly grown from $1 billion to $3 billion in just a short amount of time. “Our vision embraces the Channelside waterfront. We want to create a mixed-use destination, designed to better connect the surrounding neighborhoods and create view corridors to the channel,” commented James Nozar, CEO of Strategic Property Partners. “It provides for a vibrant, yet functional waterfront, respecting the unique needs of the port that will maximize value for both the port and the community.” About $34 million dollars worth of work is currently under way and Strategic Property Partners has assembled a world-class design team for the project. Tampa-based Alfonso Architects, Inc. and David Conner + Associates will be leading the master-planning and vision for this exciting project. SPP originally envisioned a project with an ambitious 3 million square feet of development and now those numbers are looking closer to a 9 million square feet of expansion over the next decade with plans including: ĖĺîĘðëëĺp¹p¼Æ© ªÆÀĺpª ĺ|¯ª ¯ÀĝĺĪS¯ĺ Ó ĺÚ¯Êĺpªĺ pĺ¯ ĺ|¯©¹p¼ À¯ªĘĺ downtown Tampa now has about 5,800 residences total.) Ėĺíĝïĺ© ££ ¯ªĺÀ»Êp¼ ĺ Æĺ¯ ĺ¯ ã| À Ėĺìĺ© ££ ¯ªĺ¹£ÊÀĺÀ»Êp¼ ĺ Æĺ¯ ĺ¼ Æp £ĺ Strategic Property Partners also plans to demolish and rebuild the 230,000-square-foot Channelside Bay Plaza and plans are in the works to build two new hotels plus renovate the 700-room Marriott Waterside Hotel & Marina. The proposal is planned for implementation over four phases, allowing Port Tampa Bay to continue ongoing operations and maintain required security along the working wharf. In Phase 1, SPP will partially transition the Garrison surface parking lot into a waterfront park with an adjacent events pavilion and beer garden. The Tampa Riverwalk extension would be constructed connecting with the park. Phase 1 would deliver in late 2018 pending approval of the proposed project by the Port Tampa Bay Board of Commissioners in early 2017. In Phase 2, two additional buildings would be constructed. Each would be one to three stories. The design envisions the ground floor will be lined with active retail and restaurants with outdoor dining oriented towards the waterfront. The wharf is also planned to be open to the public when not in use by the port. In the proposed timeline, Phase 2 is planned for delivery to market between Spring 2019 and Spring 2020. In Phases 3 and 4, residential buildings would be constructed along Channelside Drive, which will preserve view corridors and create a more comfortable pedestrian-oriented scale along the waterfront. The city of Tampa and Hillsborough County have already committed a total of $100 million in downtown property tax revenues for realigning streets, putting in new water and sewer systems as well as making other public improvements on the land surrounding Amalie Arena. “This is another exciting step toward bringing the waterfront back to the people, the time is right to take this area to the next level and create a new destination for generations to come.” Says Mayor Bob Buckhorn.

The vision for the Tampa Bay Area and property is to transform the land within the Channelside area – currently industrial waterfront and make it into a dynamic, community centerpiece where people will come to live, work and play all in the same neighborhood for years to come. This is a much needed renovation and development that will boost our local economy and attract new residents from all over the state and even the country. With thousands of UT students, young adults, retirees and entrepreneurs looking for affordable downtown housing options, we can only hope that Mr. Vinik’s vision will be a dream come true for many current and potential South Tampa residents.

Mike graduated from St. Lawrence Catholic School, Jesuit High School, and University of Florida. He received his law degree from South Texas College of Law. Though he initially used his law degree to work in high end insurance defense law firms, helping insurance companies keep their money in injury claims, in 1996, he opened Hancock Injury Attorneys. His goal was to use his eight years hands-on experience in insurance defense, to bring the best possible settlement to his injury clients. “I spent 8 years learning the defense side of cases and how insurance companies actually made decisions, what motivates them to settle or try cases, what increases or decreases the valuation of the case,” said Mike. “Essentially I was hired by

insurance companies to keep people away from the money they deserved from getting hurt and that wasn’t what I wanted to do. In 1996, I left the insurance defense firm and opened my own office.” In 1999, Claire left a firm of one of the top plaintiff lawyers in the United States and joined the practice. “Mike’s background is definitely one of the things that make our practice unique, because Mike has that- which we call- insider information,” said Claire. Mike agreed that his experience on the other side of the negotiation table was extremely important to his clients. “Insurance companies are like bullies. They can sit there and say we’re not going to pay you anything or were only going to pay you $2000 ever – and you can’t force them to do anything unless you hire an attorney that knows what to do – how to stand up to a bully.” That background coupled with his stellar online reviews help the firm to receive many referrals from existing and prior satisfied clients, from doctors and even from other lawyers.
