There’s No Cutting Corners at Ledo Pizza By Deborah Bostock-Kelley Ledo Pizza is a generational pizza place. In July, owners mother and son, Patty and Michael Trevethan celebrate 16 years in Carrollwood in this familyowned business, backed by a beloved franchise born in Maryland in 1955. After moving from Virginia to Tampa in 2000, the Trevethans opened Ledo Pizza because they couldn’t find a pizza place that satisfied their pizza craving.

“We couldn’t find the taste or quality we were looking for, so we decided to bring Ledo Pizza here. We could finally enjoy the same type of pizza we had back home,” she explained. Patty has watched the evolution of customer’s young children transform into adults, get married and bring their own children to their pizza place to experience what Patty describes as “Tampa’s best kept See “Ledo Pizza” on page 26.

Great Clips is Cut Above Rest By Deborah Bostock-Kelley You don’t need to ask the employees of Great Clips if they like what they do for a living; the proof is found on the faces of their satisfied customers. “It’s quick. They do a great job and it’s not that expensive. They make me look good,” quipped customer Alan Bell, “And I’m really not giving them much to work with.” It’s this type of friendly banter and customer relationship that sepa-

NEWsom EYES = Amazing Outcomes! By Matthew Selby, Publisher While many people pay a regular visit to the dentist for basic cleanings or visit their primary physician for annual check-ups, most only visit the eye doctor when they notice a change in their vision. Eye problems are often silent, offering little or no symptoms at all. Waiting for symptoms to appear can be dangerous and cause serious problems, including loss of vision; therefore, annual eye exams are essential. The professional ophthalmologists and optometrists at Newsom Eye know the importance of good eye health. They are trained in a variety of specialties and bring a breadth and depth of experience that allow them together to provide their patients with NEWsom EYES. When T. Hunter Newsom, MD, opened his first location in Sebring in 2001, he started with a small staff of only five physicians. Dr. Newsom quickly began building his own surgery center to bring the newest technologies in cataract and LASIK surgery to his patients. Opening his own surgery center not only allowed him to help more people, it also gave him the platform to do more research, which in turn caused his practice to grow at a substantial rate; he is about to hit a significant milestone – 120,000 patients since opening his practice 16 years ago! Dr. Newsom says, “When I first opened my practice, it started off as a very intimate family business. My children would often come to work with me; we had a room above the office where they would play during the day. Although we have expanded we are still a family practice.” And, as such, they still abide by the same

10

standards and dedication to quality customer service that was implemented day one. “We are really dedicated to making our patients feel comfortable,” adds Dr. Newsom. “The more comfortable they are, the easier my job is.” Newsom Eye is the number one choice for helping those with cataracts. Dr. Newsom is an expert cataract surgeon, having performed over 40,000 surgeries. Developing much of the technology that is used in his practice, Dr. Newsom truly is a leader in the ophthalmology field and is among the best and brightest in the world. Dr. Newsom’s vision is to be the “Mayo Clinic of Eyes” and he certainly is on his way. Dr. Newsom not only brings a wealth of experience, awards and research to the practice, he is also the inventor of Newsom Bladeless Laser Cataract Surgery Technique adapting the Intralase Femtosecond Laser for use in cataract surgery. “The cataract surgery was life changing! After both, my husband and I, were diagnosed with cataracts, we knew we had to do something about it. We are in our late 60’s and our vision has been deteriorating at a fast pace. We saw Dr. Newsom’s ads in Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles, so we decided to give him a call and schedule an appointment. The staff was very friendly and kind, and Dr. Newsom was simply amazing! He is definitely the best! He was kind, knowledgeable and more importantly, he reassured us that there was nothing to be scared of. Having eye surgery can be nerve wrecking, but Dr. Newsom made us feel we were in good hands, so we both decided to get cataract surgery. Let me tell you, we are both so happy we did! The recovery was easy

and fast! A short week after the procedure was performed, we could both see better than we have since we were teenagers! We can definitely appreciate our grandchild’s beautiful smile better, and we couldn’t be happier! We owe these amazing outcomes to Dr. Newsom and his team. I would recommend him to anyone needing to improve their eyesight!” says Berardina Tedeschi, a South Tampa resident and satisfied patient of Dr. Newsom. As we get older, naturally our body begins to age; the eyes are no exception. At first, impairment in vision might not seem so noticeable, but as time progresses slowly your vision deteriorates, and that impairment can greatly affect one’s quality of life and ability to enjoy the beauty around us— but it doesn’t have to!

Newsom Eye can help restore the quality of vision well into old age. All surgeries are performed onsite at their Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) certified ambulatory surgery center, so there is no need to travel far for your cataract surgery. Newsom Eye offers several replacement lenses for cataract patients that can help reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses and contacts. Dr. Newsom and his team are one of the best in the world, they are passionate about what they do, and are continuously chosen as FDA investigators for the newest in cataract technology research allowing you to have NEWsom EYES! There are many things to consider when choosing an ophthalmologist. In addition to

eye exams and dry eye treatment, routine eye exams, contact lens fittings, optical and audiology. With skilled surgeons, a compassionate clinical staff and the newest technology for complete vision care, the Newsom Eye team is among the best in the nation and offers the most advanced options for your eyes right here in Carrollwood. Newsom Eye offers free LASIK screenings and different financing options. Call today to schedule an appointment (813) 908-2020, or visit us at www.newsomeye.com. At Newsom Eye, Dr. Newsom and his colleagues use only the newest technology available, allowing them to provide the most outstanding surgical results. It is also important to note that their surgical center is AAAHC approved, which is significant in that it shows their continued dedication to maintaining

the highest national standard in sterility and safety.

Amazing Outcomes Happen Here What do amazing outcomes look like? At Newsom Eye, it’s a daily commitment made by the physicians, surgeons, and staff to collaborate together to provide amazing outcomes. Imagine hiking without your glasses fogging up or camping

without “attempting” to put in your contacts. Waking up in the morning and being able to see clearly without the help of corrective lenses is a lifechanging moment. Newsom Eye currently has three locations to better serve their patients – Carrollwood, South Tampa and Sebring. Each location has physicians that specialize in cataract, all-laser LASIK, glaucoma, retina treatments including diabetic

“Great Clips” Continued from page 1 stylist Lindsey Willis. A longtime resident of Tampa, owner Lea Orchard got in the ground floor in Tampa Bay of a now nationwide franchise and opened her first Great Clips location in 2001. She was the first to bring the Great Clips franchise to her community. It wasn’t always easy. Over a decade ago, Great Clips did not yet have any local renowned name recognition or the 60 Tampa Bay locations, 3,700 nationwide locations in the U.S and Canada that it does today. “At first, people thought we sold hair clips,” said Lea. Orchard recently opened her fourth and newest location on the corner of State Road 54 and Livingston next to Panera Bread in Central Pasco. “What is great about this business is it is a small business; I have the Great Clips name, but it’s my business and I have to build it up,” added Lea. Despite county signage regulations making it difficult to advertise the location of this Great Clips shop, in its 8 months since opening, this

State Road 54 and Livingston location has almost as much volume as her flagship store in Carrollwood. Lea is proud that she is a hundred percent hands-on with her business. Whether it’s frequent visits to each of her four Great Clips locations, hiring her staff, or mastering the art of guerilla marketing, this single mother of four balances business and family with determination and grace.

Great Clips owner Lea Orchard SmartPhone technology is welcomed at Great Clips - whether you want to pull up a picture of your desired haircut to show your stylist or would like to save time and check in before your arrival. “I won’t keep anybody that I wouldn’t let cut my hair,” she said, as she explained the process for selecting the talented stylists that have become her second family in her four shops. The stylists stay up to date on the newest trends in hair, including the “pompadour” and prohibition under cut for men and inverted and textured bobs, tousled beach waves, and bangs for the ladies.

“We keep notes in the computer of every person’s haircut every time they come in,” said Lea. “We check the notes. Consultation is huge. We ask them if ‘this is what we did last time. What do you want to do today?’ ” If a haircut request is out of the ordinary or is something that has everyone scratching their heads, Lea is happy to allow technology to come to the rescue. The stylists can pull out their SmartPhones, find the perfect photo online to confirm with the customer the style they are seeking before putting a scissor or electric razor to

their head. Technology has also helped reduce any wait time at the shop. Guests can check-in on their computers or SmartPhones and add their name to the wait list, ensuring little to no wait when they arrive. “Our online check-in is amazing,” said Lea. “You can look online and see what the wait is at a particular store. If there’s a 20-minute wait, you sign in right then and 20 minutes later you come in. No matter who came in here after you signed in online, you

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

are in front of them. You get called first before the people who didn’t check in online.” Being a member of several networking groups like CABA, where she was 2012 president, Lea said one of the best things about being involved in the day-to-day operations is that people talk to her about their experiences in her shops. She said, “I have a lot of – basically secret shoppers – but I don’t send them; they just come.” She says that her shops are family-

oriented. Seventy percent of her customers are men and families. The women tend to come after their husband or child has had a haircut. While they can spend hundreds of dollars on coloring, the women have discovered the benefit of saving money by coming to Great Clips for an outstanding $14 haircut. Lea’s Great Clips stores also provide a $2 discount to military, firefighters and police. “We do what we do best – haircuts,” said Lea. “Everybody needs a haircut and we offer affordable quality haircuts that can fit into your schedule. Great Clips is near and dear to my heart and I’m trying to build it to be a family business. I’d like my kids to take them over some day. I want to build the business and then have it be a legacy.” Lea Orchard offers four con-

“Ledo Pizza” secret.” Even Patty’s 13-year-old granddaughter who made her first appearance at the pizzeria as a newborn and danced into patrons’ hearts as an apron-wearing toddler, is planning to help her Nana in the family business. Now Michael's 15 month old daughter can be found at Ledo from time to time greeting the customers with her beautiful smile. Tucked into the corner of a shopping complex on North Dale Mabry, if not for the huge billowing yellow flag that can be seen as far down Dale Mabry as the Home Depot, many people would drive right by without knowing the gem that awaits them. This is a special place where the pizza is square; the dough is made fresh every two hours; the sauce is slightly on the sweeter side and cheese is a smoked provolone, not your typical mozzarella. Maryland transplants literally travel for miles to get a taste of home in their thin flaky crust.

Patty rattled off a list of locations that her fans travel from, memorized by heart, “Key West, Jacksonville, Daytona, Orlando, Sarasota, Lakeland, Ana Maria Island-“ Customers have even come from as far as Alabama to get a taste of their favorite addiction. Hundreds, if not thousands of names, are autographed across the front wall – customers originally from Maryland who appreciate the work that goes into an authentic Ledo Pizza. The only Ledo Pizza in Florida, for those not willing to invest the time or gas, Ledo Pizza sends their pizza, partially-baked and frozen, via Fed Ex for a next morning delivery. Customers can even take the famous addictive sauce home. Patty sells a quart of their secret sauce for just $4.99. There will never be slices sitting under a warming light here. It may take a little longer to get your order, but everything is fresh, made to order and even Oprah agreed – it’s worth the wait. The former-Queen of Daytime TV deemed it one of the top five best pizza chains in the world. With an advance phone call, Patty

can cater a party, with customers coming in to pick up pizza and she’s just as happy to have a birthday, retirement, anniversary, graduation and any other celebration on site at the pizzeria. Ledo’s Pizza serves beer and wine, but it is still a family-friendly atmosphere seating 76 inside and 20 more in outdoor seating. Outside, Ledo Pizza’s customers can have paws. Well behaved dogs are welcomed in the pet-friendly patio area. For those with food sensitivities,

Patty offers a small gluten-free pizza crust whose toppings can be customized to order. Only the meatballs are not gluten-free, allowing for a variety of delicious choices. Besides quality products, it’s the customer service that is the key ingredient to the success of this family business. For many regulars, Patty has their drinks on the table before they even order. She doesn’t need a notepad to jot down the order; oftentimes customers ask, “hey, Patty what did I order last

time?” She repeats their previous order without a glitch. “When it’s slow, I like to sit with customers and catch up on their lives. Sometimes, they come here to catch up on mine,” she said and laughed. “But I don’t have a life- this is my personal life. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I don’t see myself ever retiring. I’ll be 90 and still taking orders.” Either Michael or Patty or both are on-site every day of the week.

Congratulations to Amanda Moore, Recipient of Trinity Family Physicians’ Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award By Kim Thomas Writing about the people who receive Trinity Family Physicians’ Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award always is inspiring, but this latest recipient truly humbled me and I believe Dr. Amir Shirmohammad (Dr. Shirmo) and Dr. Stephanie Eldridge at Trinity Family Physicians feel the same way. Fourteen-year-old Amanda Moore is an A student at Gulf High School, a volleyball player on her school’s team, a junior league bowler, and a philanthropist with a heart that will bowl you over! Selling candy at the local bowling alley, Amanda has raised more than $10,000 over the past four years, and every cent goes to helping families in need through her partnership with Pasco Kids First. This young lady is so impressive in her quest to help others that we hope reading her story will inspire you to make the effort to help Amanda help Pasco Kids First, and to give – even if it is just a little, because so many people have so little. So how does an ordinary child do something extraordinary? One box of candy at a time, that’s how. Amanda and her mom Amy love to bowl and both are on leagues, so Lane Glo on Old County Road 54 in New Port Richey is kind of a second home for them. Four years ago, young Amanda started selling candy bars for $1 each at Lane Glo to raise money for a tournament. Soon she’d sold enough boxes of candy (at a profit of $12 per box) to cover her costs. Amanda’s mom Amy recalls, “When we showed up without a box of candy, people wanted to know where the candy was. I said, you mean if we show up here with more

candy, you’re going to keep buying it?” Enough people said yes and the Lane Glo managers liked that it was for a good cause, so Amy decided to let Amanda keep selling candy, but with their needs met, this single mom took the opportunity to help her daughter grow in ways that a ruler can’t measure. Amy shares, “I said why don’t you use the money you make to help people? I let her know how many families we could help.” Amanda was thrilled, so Amy started searching and was referred to Becky Bennett, MHA at Pasco Kids First Children’s Advocacy Center. This is a great fit because Becky Bennett has dedicated her career and life to helping families and children in Pasco County. It was Becky who sent a press release about Amanda’s fundraising to Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles, and knowing of the Trinity Family Physicians’ Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award, I nominated Amanda. Since then I’ve been in contact with Becky, who says of Amanda, “She is amazing! And there is so much more... just wait until you hear all of the things she does in the community not only just for us. And she is an A student and champion bowler!”

Lunch with Santa. Once again, this past Christmas she was able to brings gifts to three families in Pasco Kids First Healthy Families Program. One story after another, Amanda and her mom Amy, help to bring joy to people, and not just children. Amy shares, “Amanda says, ‘Everyone deserves a Christmas,’ so we help the whole family.” Looking through a stack of photos at the many gifts through the years shows a multitude of toys, as well as tool sets, small appliances, household necessities, and much more. Amy recalls, “The first young mother they asked us to help only asked for a mop and a broom –just basic necessities - and then we found out that she didn’t have a bed and the baby didn’t have a crib. We started telling people and were able to get them a bed and crib, too.” “A lot of kids my age don’t know what other people go through,” says Amanda, who was once like that too. “The first year, I didn’t know what those families were like.”

Dr. Shirmo and Amanda Another time, the call came from a caseworker working with a family in desperate need of a car seat. “We just hopped in the car and went to Walmart and were able to buy it for them.”

“Put Your Heart Into It” Just by selling candy at the bowling alley, Amanda began sponsoring families through Pasco Kids First in 2013 and has raised more than $10,000 to help families in need. Amanda has donated coats to patients at Good Samaritan Clinic and continues to volunteer weekly at James Malowe Elementary School. She has donated to Pasco Kids First’s

Amy (left) and Amanda (center) pose with one of the families they donated gifts to in December 2016 Dr. Shirmo wanted to know what Trinity Family Physicians could do to help, “What can we do to help you? What do you want, Amanda?” Her candid reply, “I don’t want people to just give me money, I want people to put their heart into it.” Donations Accepted at Trinity Family Physicians Dr. Shirmo and Dr. Eldridge are putting their hearts into it and Trinity Family Physicians’ office, located at 1817 Cypress Drive, Suite 101 in

If you’d like to donate money for candy, please put it in a sealed envelope and leave at front desk. Also accepted are checks made out to Pasco Kids First (a non-profit so donations are tax deductible), which can be left with the front desk at Trinity Family Physicians. NEEDED ITEMS Diapers, Children’s Underwear and Baby Supplies: In cases of sexual abuse, sometimes the children’s undergarments need to be taken for evidence or destroyed. Bus Passes: Used for families and teens to come to the Children’s Advocacy Center for trauma therapy appointments. Gift Cards and Journals for teens receiving counseling: Many times teens are overlooked when it comes to their personal needs and during the holidays. Child Safety Items (outlet plugs, cabinet locks, smoke detectors, etc.): Becky says, “We are actually actively looking for a donation (or funding to purchase) at least 50 door alarms for a campaign we are going to do with the Sheriff’s Office in April due to several child drowning deaths last year. Two mothers were arrested after their children died in ponds.” Checks: “Checks are always appreciated to assist us in purchasing the above when there is a need and to provide the needed therapy

Sydney Has a Sister Scholarship Foundation Giving recognition to children whose siblings suffer from Autism is the main goal of the Sydney Has a Sister Scholarship Foundation. The cost of a higher education is expensive and can be a burden to many families. Sydney Has a Sister recognizes the sacrifices students have to make for the benefit of their sibling with autism. All proceeds collected are awarded to college bound students who have supported their family and sibling(s) impacted by this condition. Some of the funds are also allocated for other good causes, like purchasing school supplies and holiday gifts for people impacted with autism. The non-profit organization, created by Ernie and Becky Black of Land O’ Lakes, started in 2013 when Becky, a career specialist at Sunlake High in Land O’ Lakes, went looking for scholarship money for her eldest daughter, Sydney. The Blacks have two lovely daughters, Sydney and Regan. Regan is autistic, and the sacrifices Sydney has made and the tribulations she has had to overcome, inspired her parents to form the Sydney Has a Sister

scholarship program. While researching scholarship opportunities, Becky discovered there were no options for kids like her daughter Sydney, a spunky, sweet, caring and extremely smart teen who had long embraced the role of sister, caregiver and best friend to Regan. So almost 5 years ago, in 2013, the Blacks created one. In the first two years of the foundation, the family raised an unbelievable amount of almost $45,000! After recruiting many volunteers to assist the several fund raising efforts and activities, the Blacks were able to award six $1,000 scholarships in 2014, fourteen in 2015, and twenty four in 2016. The funds were also used to buy classroom supplies for students with disabilities at Lake Myrtle Elementary in Land O’ Lakes, Weightman Middle School in Wesley Chapel and Wesley Chapel High School. But they did not stop there! Some of the funds were also used to acquire holiday gifts for adults with autism. The non-profit organization has had multiple successful events since
