Taziki’s Mediterranean Café in Northdale Puts the Delicious in Nutritious Taziki’s Promotes the Heart (and heart health) of Carrollwood-Northdale By: Kelly Stuart Williams, MA Carrollwood/Northdale has become a dining destination for healthy eating since Taziki’s Mediterranean Café (Taziki’s) opened on Northdale Boulevard in 2017. Since then, the Mediterranean diet has grown in popularity and has become the doctors’ standard for

nutrition and a heart-healthy diet. And it tastes great! Twenty years before opening in Tampa, Taziki’s founders, Amy and Keith Richards traveled to Greece, where they discovered that healthy eating had become a delicious way of life for the Mediterranean community.

A Labor Day Message & Special Thanks By the time some of you read this, Labor Day will have already come and gone. Regardless of the timing, I hope you all had a wonderful and safe weekend with your loved ones. For most people, “Labor Day” means two things; a day off and a chance to say goodbye to the summer. But do you know the meaning behind it? Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women. It has been celebrated as a national holiday in the United States and Canada since 1894. Labor Day was a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the incredible contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. I know a lot of us are struggling these days, so many have lost their jobs, others have had to shut down their long-standing businesses. It hasn’t been easy, but we cannot give up! I have had one of the hardest years of my entire life. I have been challenged physically, mentally, emotionally, psychologically, and financially. As I am sure, a lot of you have as well. These past two months, I have focused my editorials on maintaining positivity through COVID19, on keeping the faith and staying strong throughout these unprecedented times. The words of encouragement I share with you are also a reminder to myself. I have been blessed to receive so many beautiful messages from some of our readers this past couple of weeks, and I wanted to say thank you very much from the bottom of my heart for all your kind words. I am touched that so many of you have taken the time to personally write to me to thank me

for my latest articles. Knowing that I can touch someone’s life, or that I said something that brightened someone’s day, makes a massive difference in my life. All the sadness, the frustrations, even the body aches, and pain seem to subside with your kind and positive words. I want to take a moment to send a special message to Carneal Overton. First of all, I am very sorry for the loss of your mother—my deepest condolences, Carneal. As someone who lost her father not long ago, my heart breaks for you. I still cry a lot and miss him dearly, but I take comfort knowing my father is in Heaven watching over my family and me, and hopefully one day we can be together again. I appreciated your message so much it brought me to tears. I will say a special prayer for your mother and you, Carneal; you’re both in my thoughts. Thank you for reaching out. Thank you for letting me know that my words of encouragement helped you keep the faith. Stay strong Carneal, and this too shall pass. As for everyone else who wrote to me, Lindsay W., Jackie J., Robert D., Mary E. B., and everyone else who takes comfort in my words, thank you, from the bottom of my heart. You are the reason I love what I do, and you are what our magazines are all about; a local community of supporting and encouraging individuals coming together for the common good, helping one another stay positive and motivated through the ups and downs. Stay strong, everyone, stay safe, keep wearing your masks, keep social distancing, but keep supporting your local businesses, keep on keeping on. We will pull through! Until next time,

Tech Talk with Bob: STOP: Before Repairing Your PC! Imagine this. The computer you bought from that big box store seven months ago no longer works. No problem, it’s still under warranty. You call the manufacturer and get a return authorization from them. You pack and ship your computer to them. Today, two months later, you are finally getting it back from the manufacturer and cannot wait to get it up and running. You hit the switch and it boots right up. Seems to be running as fast as it did when you bought it. Wow! This booting speed reminds you of why you bought the computer in the first place. In almost no time your system is up and ready to go, however you notice that your desktop doesn’t quite look the same way you had it before you sent it for repair. Upon further investigation you realize that some of your newest programs

6 SEPTEMBER 2020

are missing, you cannot access your printer, and most importantly, all your pictures, videos, music and other data is nowhere to be found. Your computer works great, but all of your personal stuff is gone. You call the manufacturer to ask about your missing pictures and documents and other data. Suddenly you find out that the only obligation the manufacturer had to you under the warranty was to repair or replace your computer to the way it was the day you brought it home from the store and took it out of the box. You learn the hard way that your missing programs, data, etc. are your problem. You were supposed to back all that stuff up before you sent your computer in for repair; but nobody tells you that. Many people find themselves in this predicament every day. Well I’m telling you now, so after reading this, you’ll

know what to do. Computers are viewed by some people as being no different than any other electronic appliance; like an electronic coffee maker. Electronic coffee makers use a combination of hardware and software to make them function. However, the software that runs your coffee maker is not as sophisticated as the software that runs your computer. People typically do not differentiate

between the hardware and software aspects of a computer system. The truth is, where the software in your coffee maker never changes, the software in your computer is constantly changing. Especially your data files as you add and delete your music, pictures and other personal documents. All this information is stored on your computer’s hard disk drive (HDD). Your HDD stores all computer software information including your personal and unique computer information. This unique information is created over time as you use your computer system by adding programs, printers, data, etc. All these changes alter the contents of your HDD. When you send your computer to the manufacturer for repair, your HDD may be physically replaced by having a new HDD installed into your computer

For Advertising Info 813-928-6124 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

or logically replaced by having all the information on the HDD erased and then rewritten with the information the HDD had on it when your computer was new out of the box. Think of it this way. If you ever had the battery in your car replaced, the first thing you probably learned when you got back into your car is that all your radio preset stations have been wiped out due to the battery being disconnected. The auto repair shop’s responsibility is not to restore your radio presets but to replace your car’s battery with a working one. You’ll just have to reprogram those preset stations all over again. The same is true of your computer. Important information can be lost during your computer’s repair. Important personal data, like rare family photos, or that business proposal you’ve been working on all week, may be impossible to replace. It is always your responsibility to make sure you have what you need to restore

the programs and data you have added to your computer since you bought it. But most people do not figure this out until it’s too late. So how do you minimize your data loss when you need your computer system repaired? The first thing you do is make certain that all your personal data is backed up. This can be difficult if your computer will not turn on. Even if your computer will not turn on, it may still be possible that your data can be extracted from the HDD before you send your computer off for repair. If you are not familiar with how to get your data backed up, give us a call. We do stuff like this every day and can painlessly manage all of this for you. The next thing you will need are the installation disk and/ or files for any software you added to the computer after you bought it. Make sure you have all your installation media and product keys so these items can be reinstalled with as little

trouble as possible. A list of your email and website user names and passwords are also going to need to be reentered the first time you try to access any of the secured websites you visit. If you are not sure if you have everything you need to recover all of the additions you made to your computer since you bought it, contact a professional computer technician to help you get all your ducks in a row. A small investment in prevention will save you a lot of money, and grief, when your time comes to get your computer repaired. We can perform most services remotely without you having to leave your home or office, and without us coming to your location. We have other “contact-less” repair options too! Mark L. Arey, M.D. - Florida Medical Clinic Eye Specialists A native of nearby Winter Haven, Dr. Arey grew up with a dual focus on achieving successes both academically and athletically. Following high school, he attended the University of Virginia as both a pre-med student and a pitcher on the Cavaliers baseball team. A shoulder injury early in college helped narrow his focus towards becoming a physician, and after graduating from UVA he completed his undergraduate medical education at Wake Forest University School of Medicine where his interest in ophthalmology and eye surgery strengthened. Dr. Arey subsequently completed his residency and fellowship training at the nationally recognized Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, easily leading his residency class in the number of cataract surgeries performed during his time at UTSW. In 2008, Dr. Arey returned to the Sunshine State with his wife Shuchi and growing family and entered private practice with a focus on performing premium-level cataract surgery and comprehensive eye care. In 2018, Dr. Arey successfully launched a new division within Florida Medical Clinic, conveying that Florida Medical Clinic Eye Specialists was created to give area patients access to genuinely advanced medical and surgical eye care in the setting of a truly patient-centered care experience, whether in the office, the surgery center, and even on the phone. Dr. Arey credits his tight-knit staff with embracing the challenge of striving for excellence in patient care each and every day, and clearly patients are taking note. Connie D. commented “Best Doctor!! Dr. Arey is a professional, caring, outstanding doctor. He has a great personality and cares about what he does for his patients and our community. He and his staff are the best in the area.” Surgery patient Mark C. raved “Dr. Arey gave my eyes a new lease on life. I don’t know how to thank him enough and I would recommend him to anyone. Top in his field!” Said Bill E. “Highly recommend Dr. Arey! He and his

staff are simply wonderful! We value our eyesight and we value Dr. Arey’s expertise as a physician to take care of us. Thanks, Dr. Arey!” At Florida Medical Clinic Eye Specialists, Dr. Arey is pleased to offer some of the most advanced technologies available in cataract surgery, including a laser-assisted surgical approach with astigmatism reduction. In fact, Dr. Arey was the first eye surgeon to bring the femtosecond laser to North Tampa. By utilizing a variety of specialized lens implants, Dr. Arey is able to create a customized surgical plan for each patient to achieve their desired visual results. Dr. Arey is also among the first in the country to have begun implanting the PanOptix lens, the first true trifocal lens implant aimed at providing great distance, intermediate, and near vision for patients seeking maximum independence from glasses following cataract surgery. “This technology is performing even better than my initial expectations, and for the first time patients are consistently becoming truly glasses-independent following their cataract surgery,” noted Dr. Arey. He also provides his expertise in various other facets of eye care including medical and interventional glaucoma management as well as screening for diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. “Early detection and treatment remain essential for the preservation of vision in patients with these potentially devastating ocular conditions,” says Dr. Arey. In the evenings and on weekends, you’re quite likely to find Dr. Arey on a baseball diamond, soccer field, or

basketball court where he has spent a great deal of his free time volunteer coaching young athletes, including his three children. “Over the last decade I’ve had the chance to coach hundreds of kids in the area and without a doubt it’s been worth every minute. Seeing young athletes progress in ability and confidence over the course of one or more seasons in their sport is truly something special.” Athleticism clearly runs in the family with

12-year-old Mikaela playing elite national level competitive club soccer with Tampa Bay United while also representing Carrollwood Day School in golf, tennis, soccer, and track & field. 10-year-old Evan follows his dad’s first love as baseball player and pitcher while also enjoying basketball and tennis. Not to be outdone, budding soccer star Daniela (age 5) has completed her first kids’ triathlon, strokes a nice forehand on the tennis court, and is up to a Junior purple belt in karate. When asked what he enjoys most about his professional work, Dr. Arey replied, “It is truly incredible seeing how life changing cataract surgery can be for our patients. The enhancement of vision and in turn the improvement in their quality of life is both immediate and tangible. It’s very gratifying

to be able to make such a difference.” Regarding FMC Eye Specialists, Dr. Arey states “I feel very blessed to have been given the chance to design a practice that is centered on my patients. Vision is precious and being entrusted to preserve that gift is a responsibility that I do not take lightly.” Mark L. Arey, MD is a Board-Certified Ophthalmologist. His primary practice location is 4444 East Fletcher Avenue, Suite D, Tampa, FL 33613. Dr. Arey also sees patients in Land O’ Lakes at the Florida Medical Clinic facility on State Road 54. - continued from page 1 learn as much as I could. I always found it to be frustrating and challenging that schools did not teach financial literacy in school. The will teach you algebra, where studies show only 5% will ever use, and yet 100% of us use money, and there is nothing. When I got into college while taking economics classes and learning how things move, I really caught the bug of investing. After the stock market crashed in 2008, I got even deeper into the industry and started learning things from a new perspective. I needed to share what I know and teach.” After years of working in high-pressure financial sales in Illinois, Adam decided he was going to create a company that was as an alternative to the ‘big box’ firms he worked for and the antithesis of his past experience.

12 SEPTEMBER 2020

“I always wanted a long term relationship built on trust, and some firms want a transactional relationship based on fees. I just always believed that it’s the connection with the client that was the most important part of the interaction.” Relocating to Tampa with his wife and two daughters in 2015, Adam founded Trinity Wealth Management Group to give his customers a completely different type of financial advising firm. “I didn’t like the aggressive, hard sales pitch that some of these other firms did. I always believed that the interaction with the client was the most important part, not necessarily what I sold them.” Adam polled his existing clients to survey what they wanted in their ideal relationship with their financial planner. Their answer was good technology, fee transparency, and a Fiduciary— someone to look out for their

best interest. “Our firm was built for the client by the client. They shared, we listened, and then we built it. I adopted the best technology available and the Fiduciary standard.” Based on that thought process, Adam obtained his Accredited Investment Fiduciary designation. “My clients wanted somebody legally bound to work in their best interest. It’s my job to find the most suitable investments without regard to compensation,” he said.

“It’s never high-pressure. It’s about teaching the clients. We want to empower them with the right tools and knowledge to know what they own, why they own it, and how it makes in their longterm financial plan. We give our customers a level of confidence that they might not otherwise have when it comes to investment management and their retirement plan,” he said. “We built a new kind of Financial Planning firm built by for the client by the client. Adam explained that

typically clients come to Trinity Wealth Management Group for three reasons. Their lack of knowledge, time, or, sometimes, the lack of desire to manage their investments. “My focus is one of both protection and service. I like to think that I got my business acumen from my father, also an entrepreneur, and the nurturing, caring, and protection side from my mother. Doing a great job for my clients is my first priority, and having a good relationship with them is equally important.” In addition to founding his education-based financial planning firm, Adam is an instructor at the University of South Florida (USF) teaching retirement income planning. “I teach people how making small changes to their habits can make a difference in their overall life.” Adam explained that when many people ponder leveling the risk when diversifying their

portfolio, they think about the amount of stock and bonds needed, not tax implications. “We pay close attention to and put a lot of focus on taxes,” he said. “Taxes will take more out of your portfolio than the markets ever will.” 401Ks and IRAs are both tax-deferred. Eventually, when the money comes out, so does the taxes. “We try to have a diversification from a tax standpoint. Approaching your investment from a tax perspective makes all the difference,” he explained. “You diversify your portfolio for risk and taxes.” Not only is Adam passionate about helping his financial planning clients, but he’s also equally as giving when helping his community. Adam finds himself hosting events he calls, feel-good fundraisers. He’s shaved his head ten years in a row to raise money for St. Baldrick’s, a childhood cancer research foundation

and supported Blessings in a Backpack, a childhood hunger eradication program that provides food in a backpack to children in need. Adam said what enjoys most about founding his financial planning company is simply helping people prepare for the future and retirement. “I always enjoyed teaching and coaching, so this is my passion and my purpose coming together.” To learn more about

“Taziki’s”

- continued from page 1 The Greek dining experienced featured smalltable cafes where neighbors met to connect around healthy flavors and to celebrate life. They learned to embrace the Greek word, Eudaimonia, meaning “human flourishing.” This is the essence of Taziki’s. We believe in sharing the impactful and everyday moments of life over a delicious meal with loved ones. We put heart behind everything we do because we value the “flourishing” of our customers.” (tazikis.com) Amy and Keith enjoyed the food, but they wanted to bring home the sense of community they experienced alongside the plant-based diet rich in healthy fats (like olive oil) and delicious spices. They embraced the alignment of healthy food

and its contribution to healthy communities, and that is what Taziki’s is based on 20 years later: in Tampa and more than 60 locations throughout the United States. We embrace the Mediterranean lifestyle, especially in our diet: primarily plant-based, healthy oils over butter, using herbs and spices for optimal flavor, limiting red meat, and enjoying fish and poultry at least twice a week. (tazikis.com). Whether you dine-in, takeout, or order online, healthy food is just around the corner or a phone call away. Whether it’s Chicken Kebobs, Greek Salad, or a Grilled Veggie Feast, Taziki’s features food to delight every member of your family. If you’re planning a party or an office-get-together, Taziki’s can accommodate an intimate group of ten (10) or a large group of 100. They feature a “Gyro Bar,” which

is wildly popular because groups have fun building their Gyros: a Greek staple food. Boxed lunches also are accessible and readily available, as are three (3) flavors of hummus! According to the Mayo Clinic, “The Mediterranean diet is a way of eating based on the traditional cuisine of countries bordering the

Mediterranean Sea. While there is no single definition of the Mediterranean diet, it is typically high in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nut and seeds, and olive oil. Daily consumption of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and healthy fats is coupled with a weekly intake of fish, poultry, beans, and eggs.” Fresh food is central to the

concept of healthy eating, and at Taziki’s, there are no freezers or fryers, and all of the meat is cut fresh daily. Most of the menu items are gluten-free, and there are many vegetarian items. Dietary restrictions and customer requests are welcome and accommodated to the most significant degree possible. A recent Google Review was received from Jessica D., who has become a frequent diner in past weeks,

“We’ve been coming here for weeks, and you can’t go wrong with this gem. Great service and amazing food. Did I mention the outdoor seating and pet-friendly patio? I can’t wait to come back again. I highly recommend it. Similarly, Laura B. wrote, “First time here won’t be the last. Great food, friendly staff. Loved it. Had the grilled chicken roll-up and whipped feta. Can’t wait to try more!” Taziki’s Mediterranean

Café embraced community giving since its opening when they donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Tampa Bay, and they are locally owned and operated. They are members of the Carrollwood Area Business Association (CABA). They have participated in community events ranging from CABA’s Taste of Carrollwood to the Holiday Tree Lighting with the Northdale Civic Association.
