By Marcy Sanford Primrose Schools have led in quality, innovative early childhood education and care for the past 35 years. Ami Gohil was so impressed with Primrose’s balanced learning approach that she decided to open her own. “I first found out about Primrose Schools when I was a parent. Both of my children attended a local Primrose School and I was a teacher there for three years. My family was so impressed with the positive impact the school had in our lives and the lives of other families that we decided to open

one in Bloomingdale.” In May the opportunity to take over Primrose School of Lutz came open and, being a resident of the area, Ami took the opportunity to become the new owner. “This is our passion to service families and children of our community and prepare them for their next stage of life.” “We feel like everyone needs Primrose,” said Executive Director Sonya Boyette. “We live here. We know people in the community and we want the children of this area to have a safe, loving environment that See “Primrose” on page 24.

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

From The Editor Kim Thomas

Aloha & Aloha as We Say Goodbye and Hello! I love the word Aloha because it means both hello and goodbye. It’s an appropriate word this month for us here at Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles because as I say Aloha on my way out to experience new adventures, editor Carla Dubis says Aloha as she comes in to take over editing the publications that I’ve cared so much about throughout my years working for Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles of East Lake, of Odessa/Lutz/Land O’ Lakes, and of Trinity. Carla has a passion for graphic arts and designing layouts, as well as writing, and I’ve caught myself looking over her shoulder to see what magic she’s working while laying out the New Tampa and South Tampa editions of Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles. I know readers will enjoy Carla’s fresh ideas, and can look forward to receiving the same quality, community-oriented publication. It has been an honor to write and edit for this publication and to meet so many of the business owners who

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

have advertised throughout the years, many of whom have consistently been with Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles from the start of each of seven publications. I am so grateful to publishers Tim and Doreen Selby for trusting in me to edit East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles, which first delivered to mailboxes in May 2008. Not long after, they asked me to edit their Trinity Area publication, and then in 2010, when they expanded to the Odessa/Lutz/Land O’ Lakes Area, I was eager to be on board. I am proud to have been a part of this publication, which has hit some milestones requiring some changes. The name change for one – Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles is reflective of the major growth it’s had, now with seven publications reaching approximately 130,000 homes and businesses in the Tampa Bay Area. I’ve loved my job! It feels great to help local businesses gain recognition and to have a platform to help bring attention to important local issues.

While I’ve been busy writing about businesses in N. Pinellas and W. Pasco, my husband Jack has been building our family business in Dade City. Along with Jack’s brother Steve Thomas (the major shareholder), we are part owners of Surecrete Design Products, a manufacturer of decorative concrete supplies. Our son Sawyer and daughter-in-law Madi also work at Surecrete and our youngest, Axel, recently started his own decorative concrete company, AT Decorative Concrete. Our oldest, Katie, is now a real estate agent and will continue to writing for this publication as she’s done for 11 years. My focus turns to helping my children in their business endeavors, and while Jack says he doesn’t need me at his office (he must be scared!), I look forward to accompanying him on some of his business trips, which have taken him to places like China, Africa, Trinidad and Canada. The last trip I took with him was to Hawaii! I’ll say Aloha now, and thank you!

K and K Parrot Supplies: Everything Your Feathered Friend Needs By Marcy Sanford K and K Parrot Supplies recently opened a new retail store at 4608 Land O’ Lakes Boulevard. For more than 13 years the online retailer has been providing bird owners and lovers with high quality toys, food, and accessories at competitive prices and now, with their brick and mortar location, they are able to serve their customers and their birds even better and continuing to live up to their slogan to provide feathered friends with everything they need to live happy, healthy lives. If you are a new bird owner, K and K Parrot Supplies owners Kathy and Karen are a wealth of knowledge. They owned a breeding aviary in Delaware for 10 years before entering the pet supply business but even before that Kathy was in love with birds. “My first pet bird was a cockatiel.

6

After that, the birds I kept as pets got bigger and bigger.” Kathy now owns three parrots and is happy to share her expertise from years as a pet bird owner and breeder. One area where she sees some misconceptions among pet bird owners is when it comes to food. “The quality of bird food has become so much better than it was years ago. Parrots and bigger birds can live up to 80 years but with the high quality food available now, they may have a longer life span. Many people think it is ok to just feed seeds to birds but good quality food is very important or the bird can get sick.” K and K Parrot Supplies carry the full lines of high quality foods by Hari, Volkman, and Higgins. They even carry both the TOP’s and Harrison’s lines of organic foods. If your bird is a picky eater or has food allergies, Kathy and Karen are happy to special order any type of food your favorite bird might need.

Parrots and exotic birds of all kinds of feathers can be found at K and K “Parrots and other birds make great pets,” says Karen. “They all have different personalities and when you talk and interact with them they become amazing companions. Like any animal you have to give them love, attention, and care.” Kathy and Karen are happy to help bird owner with tips on how to best care for them. Kathy even takes notes for each customer so she can help them remember what they

bought the last time they were in the store. K and K Parrot Supplies stocks foraging and enrichment toys and cages of all sizes to help keep your feathered friend happy and occupied. Monthly wing clipping will help keep your pet bird safe if he or she spends time outside his or her cage. With this procedure birds are still able to exercise their muscles while easily moving around the house and being able to coast to a safe landing. This

important procedure is best handled by an expert. Kathy and Karen are happy to be able to provide this service to their customers along with nail trimming. Most people do not feel comfortable doing this on their own and Kathy and Karen have years of experience. They can ensure your bird is groomed properly and safely.

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

Karen and Kathy are very active in the community and are happy to be able to donate food to local rescue organizations. K and K Parrot Supplies literally has everything you need for birds of all sizes from conures and cockatiels to cockatoos and macaws. They sell food in bulk for larger breeds and even

carry bird food for wild birds. Also available is handfeeding formula for baby birds. K and K Parrot Supplies’ online store is always open. They offer free delivery on orders of $50 and more. You can also order online and pick your order up at their retail store.

K and K Parrot Supplies, located at 4608 Land O’ Lakes Blvd, is open Tues. and Thurs. from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.; Wed. and Fri., 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Sat., 10 a.m. – noon; and by appointment. For information or to place an order, visit KandKParrotSupplies.com or call 302-354-4843.

Rebecca W. says, “I have been using Cornerstone for a couple of years now. I started off on my primary house with plumber Kiel installing an iron/water filtration for iron in my well. I then had an electrician install additional outlets at my home and a HVAC agent service my a/c system. I was talked into buying the service plan by Kiel and I’m so happy I did. I am getting quality work at a discount. Today I have my dad’s rental property getting flipped, because well it needs to and he can’t do it anymore due to dementia. I hired some contractors to fix up the property (redo floors, tile work, and even install cabinets). One contractor even claimed to be a prior plumber and assured me he could conquer the job with quality. Well…thank goodness Jerry, a Cornerstone plumber, came to my rescue because my so-called plumber had no clue what he is doing. Jerry is taking the time to make sure the plumbing is done right and to county code! Going above and beyond the call of duty. Every time I have called cornerstone for electric, plumbing, or HVAC it has always been top-notch service. Thank you!” With Cornerstone you always receive professionalism, quality work and quality products. Leading the Way in Culinary Experience ¡CUATRO Restaurant & Bar at TPC Tampa Bay! By Katie Thomas ¡CUATRO Restaurant & Bar at TPC Tampa Bay in Lutz is a modern restaurant designed to bring people together. Bring friends and co-workers to ¡CUATRO and everyone will enjoy the fresh seasonal flavors curated by Executive Chef Benjamin Clark. Considered one of the most beautiful and exciting 18-hole resort golf courses in Florida, TPC Tampa Bay’s gorgeous landscaping that winds through natural wetlands, cypress trees, lagoons, oaks and abundant wildlife areas is the perfect backdrop for a top-rated round of golf and delicious award-winning food from ¡CUATRO. ¡CUATRO Restaurant & Bar is truly a hidden gem and should be on every food lover’s list of places to dine in the Tampa Bay Area. With stunning views of TPC Tampa Bay’s masterful design, ¡CUATRO is open to the public and even provides catered events. It’s really three venues in one with the

full service bar and high-top tables, the dining area, and the banquet room. Executive Chef Ben Clark says, “The surrounding close-knit community has really embraced our presence here and supported us. In return we have done everything to embrace the community around us and provide the best possible service. Our staff is wonderful! From the front-of-house service staff to the back-of-house kitchen staff, I’ve never seen a group more dedicated to their craft.” Chef Ben has ingrained in his staff a mindset that meets his own – his philosophy for creating masterful food aligns with what his father taught him as a kid. “My dad always taught me to do what I love and put passion into my work. I teach my staff that putting love and effort into each dish makes all the difference. Training a staff that is able to retain that mindset is a big accomplishment and I am proud of our back-of-house and front-of-house teams. They really care about the food

When your chef takes four days to turn pork belly into bacon in his very own in-house smoker, you know the quality is stellar! Chef Ben’s menu is his life’s work, and as his father taught him, he puts passion and love into each dish that comes out of ¡CUATRO’s kitchen, so guests always receive the best. Chef Ben has updated the banquet menu for large events held at

TPC Tampa Bay and for catering. He says, “Our banquet menu is phenomenal and 99% of the time, I work oneon-one with our customers to customize the banquet menu selection to their liking. When someone calls about a banquet or private dinner, I tell them they can get ideas off the website, but I work with them through email to come to a finalization that they really love and that suits their tastes.” Members and the public can reserve the full-service banquet room for golf related events, silent/live auctions, lunches, dinners,

wedding showers, baby showers, bar mitzvahs – you name it! Dedicated to Bringing Fresh New Tastes to the Culinary Scene! Chef Ben shares, “I love opening the eyes to our guests to try new experiences. One of the reasons I really fell in love with the culinary experience of eating and cooking is that it gives people the opportunity to do something different and try something they’ve never done before. The only limits are the ones placed on yourself!” The ¡CUATRO team began pairing up with local breweries last summer to create a new type of dining experience and help to expose the community to some local craft breweries that they may not try otherwise. “We wanted to bring the community of brewers and tasters together, while incorporating our food to be paired with elect beers,” says Chef Ben. “The most important part is opening people’s eyes to trying new things, tasting something they may not have opted for before and help raise awareness of our restaurant and all the awesome local breweries in the area.” Last summer ¡CUATRO paired up with Cigar City out of Tampa, Green Bench out of St. Pete, and Big Storm out of Clearwater. For each dinner and beer pairing event, Chef Ben and his team used the beer being featured from each brewery in the ingredients to make each menu item for the night. From Oatmeal Stout glazes to craft beer marinated steak toppings, the dinner and beer pairings were a hit, so they’re bringing it back this summer! GCS Driving Academy Teaches Hands-On Driving in Real World Situations By Kim Thomas A long career as a racecar driver and performance driving coach led George Csanadi to open GCS Driving Academy, which caters to two very different types of drivers: Those who own high-performance vehicles and hire George to help them turn their fantasies into realities, and young drivers with parents who want to hire the very best driving coach for their children. These two types of clients love George for very different reasons, but parents of teens who have gone through his program love George because he teaches their children to safely navigate Tampa Bay’s busy roadways. “I have successfully coached over 400 teens. Today I coached number 416, and I have met just about every personality type and every skill level with both students and parents. “It’s a reality check when parents learn that 60% of kids will crash in the first 12 months after getting their driver’s license,” says George. “I am teaching a lifelong skill that will stay with them until they are 90 and have to hang up the keys because they can’t see anymore. With me, they are going to learn to be a driver who anticipates things instead of reacting to things. I was a competition racecar driver for 18 years and I apply those same techniques in my teaching and it has nothing to do with speeding! It is about being 100% aware of what’s around you. A racecar driver knows what’s on his left, his right, in front, and behind at all times!” George says there are two things that people need to know about GCS Driving School. “Number one: I do not provide the vehicle. We are doing the training on the same family car that they will be using to do the rest of their training. And if there is more than one family car, we try to drive them all. I’ve taught kids driving all types of vehicles from Mini-Coopers to Escalades and Suburbans. “Number two: I made it mandatory that parents ride with us three years ago, and it was the smartest decision I’ve made in this business. For kids to continue in the program, parents need to come and sit in the car with us and observe how their student

learns and how they’re being coached. Let’s face it, a lot of times parents don’t anticipate what is coming and calmly tell their child; rather, they wait until the last minute and then end up screaming at them. When they ride along with us, they observe me and then when I leave, they can continue the same pattern and same style of coachFrom their quotes, it’s easy to see that GCS ing.” student Casey (above) and mom Kristen with His sense of her son Trey, are very happy with GCS! humor showing, George adds, “I always Trey’s driving abilities but to witness tell parents: Letting your kid drive first hand that we all could benefit you up to Publix is not a good driving from a professional driving lesson lesson; it’s twelve minutes of terror from time to time. Where we live, kids get their license and drive out of their neighborhood or apartment complex straight onto a busy roadway.” George acknowledges, “I’m not the cheapest coach in the area for sure, but I deliver an incredible result. I have a 100% clean record – no crashes – and I want to keep it that way. Hiring me to improve parking lot skills is a bad investment. The value of my coaching services is being next to the kid with a semi coming up on his left!” GCS Driving Academy has a very informative and easy-to-navigate website (gcsdrivingacademy.com) where you can find more information and many testimonials. For us, it really is a home away from home. Our 4-year-old son has been at Primrose for about two and a half years and our 10-month-old son has been at Primrose for seven months. We can honestly say they are both thriving in the positive environment that Primrose provides.” Balanced Learning: At Primrose School of Lutz, they know that children learn better when they are engaged and that’s why their curriculum combines leaning and play to keep children interested and active throughout out the day. Primrose’s lessons are based on years of early childhood education research and each year the lessons are evaluated and redesigned if needed so that they can evolve to meet the changing needs in children’s education. Everything at Primrose is based on your child’s age group and what their developmental needs are at each stage. “Our children have fun while they are learning,” says Sonya. “It is academics with play. An art lesson included children looking at a piece of art, learning about different mediums and brushstrokes, and then creating their own work of art using whatever materials they wanted. The idea and importance of manners, honesty, leadership, conservation, and more are all explored during fun monthly lessons and activities. Students also have the chance to learn about the joy of giving back to their community. “We want to teach our children to give back without the expectation of anything in return,” said Ami. “The first five years of life are very important to character development.” “I have been in early childhood education for 11 years,” said Assistant Director Kathleen Brunnet. “I wanted to find a center that met my vision of what I thought early childhood education should be and Primrose School of Lutz is that. We live out the values and vision of the school everyday. I believe in what we do here.” More From Primrose Parents: “At this age, learning should be fun and not institutionalized. As a family,

we know our child is safe, happy, genuinely loved, and receives the type of care we would expect from a private preschool setting. We know without a doubt we made the right decision for our child by choosing Primrose of Lutz and have no regrets.” And, mom Sarah W. said, “I know from the moment my child goes in for the day, till the time we arrive to go home, the activities at Primrose are engaging, educational, and fun.” Primrose School of Lutz offers loving care for children as young as six-weeks-old, and through Voluntary

By Bob Dalles Greetings Friends… My name is Bob Dalles, better known as Bob The Computer Guy. My goal is to help my readers better understand computer systems, wired and wireless networks, information technology (IT) devices like phones and pads; and most importantly, keeping you as safe as possible when you interact with the internet and other networks. A little bit about me. I want you to know that you are dealing with an individual who draws on decades of experience and sincerely wants to share this knowledge with you. When I say decades I am not talking about only twenty-some years, as much as I hate to admit it, were looking more closely at forty years. My computer experience goes back to the latter half of the 1970’s before the surge of the personal computers industry. Remember computer punch cards? If you don’t, then good for you my friends, you are “soooo” lucky. Compared to today’s methods of interacting with computers you would probably not be a big fan of punch cards. Even if you enjoy the novelty of playing around with older technology, you would quickly get tired of the

tedium of using computer punch cards on a daily basis. In addition to my approximately forty-some years of technology experience, I have owned and operated computer consulting corporations since 1995. Plus, I have been an IT Instructor for a well-known technical college for the last eight years. I continue to teach as well as run my computer corporation on a daily basis. I want this column to not only be my column but our column. On a regular basis, I will provide you with topics I hope you will find interesting. However, most importantly, I would love for you to submit questions on IT topics that interest you. Thank you for taking the time to read this and getting to know me better. Got a tech question? Email me at TechTalk-TBNL@BobTheComputerGuy.NET. Questions will be selected by the popularity of a topic and answered in this column. “Dr. Albert” Continued from page 1 their families with a wonderful experience every visit. The offices are friendly and inviting with a caring staff that gives personalized attention to patients, focusing on putting them at ease and making sure the environment is positive and happy. Both locations of Albert Family Orthodontics provide a snack bar, coffee, games and iPads for patients and their families to enjoy. But what patients love most about going to Albert Family Orthodontics is Dr. Albert himself. He is sincerely nice, with an upbeat personality, and he provides exceptional care to patients of all ages. While it’s never too late to get the smile you want, it’s best to start early with children. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial orthodontic evaluation at the first sign of orthodontic problems or by age 7. At this early age, Dr. Albert may not recommend orthodontic treatment, but he can inform parents of the most advantageous time to begin treatment if necessary.

Trays With No Impressions, YES! Remember those uncomfortable impression trays with the yucky goo? In most cases, they are no longer necessary. One of the most recent advancements in orthodontic treatments is the use of the iTero intraoral scanner. Dr. Albert uses the iTero wand to scan a patient’s mouth instead of using trays to create impressions, which makes for a far more comfortable experience. “It is possible to go through the whole treatment without needing impressions,” says Dr. Albert. “We can digitally send the scans to the to lab instead of sending impressions through the mail, which makes the process quicker. The scans can also be used to create 3D printed Guardian retainers, which provides four total retainers for the patients.” Patients love the option to save money by buying extra retainers retainers up front, since most pre-teens and teens end up needing extra retainers due to losing them. Dr. Albert says it ends up costing less to purchase the 4 digital retainers than purchasing one regulat replacement retainer later– and you don’t have to come back to the office for extra appointments to get them made!

Getting to Know Dr. Albert A lifelong local, Dr. Albert graduated from East Lake High School and earned his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from The University of Florida. He’s been honored with numerous awards and is a member of several dental associations, and not only does he strive to be a positive force within the dental community, he sets a great example for his young patients by volunteering his dental services through mission trips with his church, Cypress Meadows Community Church (CMCC) of Safety Harbor under the direction of Pastor Douglas Poole. The children and adults that he is able to help on dental mission trips live in remote areas that would not have dental services provided without the help of dentists volunteering their time. Dr. Albert served on mission trips with CMCC to Haiti in 2014 and 2015, taking a break in 2016, and this year, just returned from a mission trip to Nakuru, Kenya where he and others provided dental and humanitarian services to the children at Springs of Hope Orphanage. wanted to help and donated children’s clothing, while many dentists in the area donated toothbrushes and toothpaste. It was truly a community effort that made a difference in another continent. While it’s important to Dr. Albert to make a difference globally through dental mission trips when he’s able, his patients take priority and he finds ways to make orthodontics fun for them. When you visit Albert Family Orthodontics’ Facebook page, you’ll find “Braces Off” celebration photos with patients and you’ll find that he holds fun contests for patients. Since orthodontic treatment is a long-term commitment for preteens and teenagers, the contests keep patients engaged during the process. Each year, Albert Family Orthodontics’ patients get excited about the Summer of Music and Smiles Summer Concert Series. This year, patients can enter to win tickets to some awesome concerts including Shawn Mendes’ Illuminate World Tour, as well as oldschool favorites Paula Abdul, Boys II Men, and New Kids on the Block – one patient will win four tickets for each concert. Concert tickets aren’t the only things featured in contests.

Multiple winners receive iTunes gift cards every month. There are movie gift card contests, and every year Albert Family Orthodontics invites all patients to their yearly AstroSkate party. Dr. Albert is dedicated to the community where serves and lives, and provides opportunities for his patient base to improve the lives of others through charities such as Toys for Tots. He also provides an annual babysitting certification program through Red Cross free of charge for patients. Completion of the program includes certification in CPR and first aide, and this knowledge can help patients create their own positive impact in the community. Dr. Albert gets his young patients to think communally as well and offers them a chance to help their schools earn money by encouraging friends and family to vote for their school in his yearly “Making a Change & Helping Local Schools” campaign. The top three voted schools are put in a drawing for a first place $1,000 donation, and a second and third place donation of $250. New Patients: What to Expect New patient evaluations are al-
