Collagen Cross-Linking By Carla Dubis Advocates of eye health and pioneers of advanced medical treatments, Newsom Eye’s team of physicians led by Newsom Eye founder, T. Hunter Newsom, MD, is proud to offer a new treatment called Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking (CXL) to patients with Keratoconus, providing them with NEWsom EYES! Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Fazio at Newsom Eye and hear more about this breakthrough procedure and how it is providing patients with a healthier eyesight. Dr. Fazio specializes in primary eye care including Pre-Operative and Post-Operative Cataract and LASIK care. He is Board Certified to treat and manage ocular diseases, such as dry eye and glaucoma. To date, Dr. Fazio has co-managed tens of thousands of surgical cases with over twenty years of experience.

ultraviolet (UV) light with vitamin B2 (riboflavin) eye drops to strengthen corneal tissue. The treatment can slow or halt the progression of Keratoconus. “Let me explain, Keratoconus is an abnormality of the eye in which the normally round, dome-shaped cornea weakens and becomes progressively thinner and irregular in shape,” Dr. Fazio added after he saw my puzzled face when I heard the word “Keratoconus.” Dr. Fazio proceeded to further explain in ways that was easier for me to understand the severity of this abnormality; “The resulting coneshaped cornea can cause high levels of astigmatism (irregular curvature) and nearsightedness. In more serious cases patients will develop scarring and loss of vision.”

he said “There is definitely a genetic link, I know this because unfortunately I have it in my family, so I am very familiar with the disease. It is very close to my heart, that is why I am so passionate about this, and want to do something to prevent it.”

Dr. Fazio the general population. It is generally first diagnosed in young people at puberty or in their late teens. It is found in all parts of the United States and the rest of the world. It has no known significant geographic, cultural or social pattern.” I was curious to know if there was a genetic predisposition for this abnormality so I asked Dr. Fazio and

Is Keratoconus a common abnormality? I asked Dr. Fazio if this was something that affected a lot of people, and if anyone was particularly at risk to develop it. Dr. Fazio said “Keratoconus has been estimated to occur in 1 out of every 500 persons in

How does Keratoconus affect my eyes and my vision? The cornea is the clear window of the eye and is responsible for refracting, or bending, most of the light coming into the eye. Therefore, abnormalities of the cornea can severely affect the way we see the world, making it difficult to perform simple tasks, such as driving, watching TV, or reading a book. “In its earliest stages, Keratoconus causes slight blurring and distortion of vision and increased sensitivity to light. These symptoms usually first appear in the late teens and early twenties,” said Dr. Fazio. “Keratoconus may progress for 10-20 years and then slow or stabilize, usually by the age of 40-45. Often Keratoconus patients first require glasses, then gas permeable contact lenses, to restore their vision,” Dr. Fazio added.

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

So how does collagen crosslinking work? Collagen is the structural protein that provides strength and firmness to our corneal tissue. Corneal collagen cross-linking works by forming new cross-links between collagen fibers, which are the natural “anchors” within the cornea. These anchors are responsible for preventing the weakened cornea from bulging out and becoming steep and irregular. The addition of these “cross beams” acts like adding rungs on a ladder to stiffen and strengthen the cornea, allowing it to focus light more efficiently and accurately. As with many conditions the earlier the diagnosis, the better the results. If collagen cross-linking is performed early, it may be possible to prevent the signs and symptoms of Keratoconus. Glasses or contact lenses will still be needed following the cross-linking treatment (although a change in the prescription may be required). CXL has also been successful in treating patients with corneal ectasia, a steepening of the cornea which occurs as a complication of previous laser refractive surgery. Collagen cross-linking has been successfully used in Europe and other

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

countries for over 15 years, and is currently approved by the FDA in the United States. Newsom eye is now able to provide this breakthrough treatment to their patients using advanced technology for corneal cross-linking. Does the CXL procedure hurt? “No. The procedure is painless because anesthetic eye drops are used to eliminate any discomfort, but it is normal to feel some discomfort after

the procedure while the corneal epithelium heals” replied Dr. Fazio. You may also experience some light sensitivity, a dry, scratchy sensation in your eye, or feel as if there is an eyelash in your eye. Can cross-linking be performed on anyone with Keratoconus? During your consultation, the doctor will determine if cross-linking might be an appropriate treatment for you.

Ali Lund Combines Motherhood and Realty as Perfect Resource for Local Buyers, Sellers By Deborah Bostock-Kelley As a hard-working single mom of two boys, Tampa native, Solaris Realty of Tampa Bay realtor Ali Lund understands all of the “little things” that many don’t think about when buying or selling a home. Whether the house is near an “A” school or safe playground or park can be the difference between a buyer with a young family passing on that inevery-other-way “perfect” home. “It’s important to me as a parent, so I know it would be important to my client,” she said. Ali claims it’s all in the details. If you are selling a home, it’s best to look at it from a buyer’s perspective. Is there clutter in your living room, knickknacks gathering dust? If so, remove them. Is the paint on the walls a vibrant shade of whatwas-I-thinking? A pale grey or neutral tone can help potential buyers better

10

JUNE 2017

visual themselves in your living space. Does the carpet or grout need a good scrubbing? If you can’t do the work yourself, find a licensed professional. Are there minor repairs that have been ignored over time? Before you put your home on the market is the time to make these important and necessary corrections. “Not everybody wants a project,” she explained. “Get rid of clutter. In this case, less is more. Streamline – try to make things simpler.” She also suggested a fresh smelling home can be another reason for a sold sign. Something as simple as lighting a scented candle or using aromatherapy diffusor can make the home more welcoming. Additionally, planting fresh flowers outside in the front of the home can help make a house feel more “homey.” It is very important to be able to provide accurate records as to the age

of the air-conditioning unit, roof, and hot water heater. “Ideally, you should have purchase receipts, “she explained. For homes being sold with appliances, age is not a factor as they can be listed as as-is in the contract. As a photographer herself, she also credits having good photos of the home’s exterior and interior for helping create a sale. “First impressions of that home are seen online – virtual- way before the client even walks through the front door.” Finally, Ali said that the price needs to be attainable. If the seller is asking $250,000 in a neighborhood where homes are selling for much less than that price, the seller needs to be realistic. “There needs to be some wiggle room.” Interested sellers can reach out to Ali to learn about discounted commissions and many other items you might not even know that Ali is

on top of, ready to help. On the other hand, if you are in the market to buy a home, Ali said, “It helps me as your realtor to have specific information about the type of home you are seeking.” Rather than generalize and say you are looking for a 4 bedroom, 2400 square foot home, if a buyer says 4 bedroom, 2400 square feet, eat-in kitchen, three-car garage, with a pool, big backyard, near a decent high school, she can eliminate hundreds of homes that don’t meet the specific criteria and narrow down to the few that do. “I try to ask my buyers for three deal-breakers, like if the home is too close to the road,” she said. Servicing Carrollwood, Odessa and Wesley Chapel, whether it’s helping a couple find their starter home or an expanding family discover their forever home, Ali enjoys listening to the stories that

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

each person has to tell. She is also happy to be a great resource for local recommendations from pediatricians, dentists, and dog walkers to bike trails, running trails, and art events. “I’ve lived in Tampa all my life and specifically Carrollwood for many years, so I can give my clients many great recommendations,” she said. Ali described herself as “consistent, reliable and energetic.” She is someone who has no problem chatting up to strangers. She said she is completely authentic – what you see is what you get – and is someone who likes to talk and is funny – “well slightly,” she quipped, then added sincerely. “I truly love seeing my clients excited about a new home.” Her enthusiasm and dedication to meeting her client’s needs makes her an equally perfect resource from the perspective of a buyer or a seller. If you have a home to sell or are in the market for purchasing a new home, contact Ali Lund at Solaris Realty of Tampa Bay at 813.470.0026 or email aliann28@gmail.com. Be sure to ask her about a commission discount!

Escape to Island Time℠ in Your Own Backyard This year Patio Pools is celebrating its 38th year in business. Since 1979 Patio Pools has been transforming bland, boring backyards all across the Tampa Bay Area into beautiful, relaxing, island-like oases. Located at 4118 Gunn Highway, the swimming pool experts at Patio Pools can build a new swimming pool or remodel or repair an existing one in a timely, efficient manner. They pride themselves on working with their clients to make sure they know what is happening every step of

the way and that the process of getting a new pool is (almost) as exciting as the pool itself. Once you have your new pool, their retail store has every accessory imaginable to make your days in the sun extra fun. “Patio Pools has been in my family for two generations,” said Patio Pools owner Gina Schrader. “We have staff members who have more than 45 years of experience in designing, building, remodeling or repairing pools. Because of our expertise we can typically complete a pool project in 21 days.” Just think in only 21 working

days or so, with help from Patio Pools, your backyard can be made over into your own private island escape. Gina says the process starts with a free consultation with one of Patio Pools design experts who will visit your home, take a look at your backyard, talk to you about the features you want, and then create a 3-D CAD design for you to review. One of the most popular trends Gina has seen in pool design is the addition of water features, “People like to hear the water sound because it is very relaxing and can block out sound from your neighbors. We can

do any type of water feature. Bubblers and deck jets are a nice addition. People also like sun decks, an area in the pool that is only about six inches deep but big enough for a lounge chair. It is a good place to lay out in the sun and can also be a fun place for younger children to play.” Patio Pools can also customize lighting for you and add automation so you can run your pool from your smart phone. “We can set it up so that you can tell Alexa to turn your pool lights on,” said Gina. In addition to features to make your pool special, Patio Pools can

build spas, decks, and enclosures to complete your recreational retreat. After your Patio Pools project is complete, your backyard will be the place you’ll want to spend the rest of your summer having fun and enjoying life with family and friends. “We really enjoy our customers,” said Gina. “We love to see how happy they are at the end of their project. The kids are always so happy to swim and can’t wait to get in the pool. People get excited about the project in the beginning but then they are so happy in the end.” “Thank you for an excellent job building our swimming pool,” said Patio Pools client Lynne J. “We had interviewed three different companies but because of (our design consultant’s) enthusiasm for his product and expertise in pool design, we choose Patio Pools. He explained the construction process and what to expect in detail and in approximately three weeks our pool was complete.” “This is a very competitive business but thanks to our excellent customer service and pool experts we’ve been in business for 38 years,” said Gina “We are very proud that Tampa Bay families have been trusting us to transform their backyards since 1979.” If you’re ready to have your own private island oasis, schedule a free consultation with Patio Pools today. Patio Pools can also remodel or repair your existing pool and is the area’s best supplier of pool supplies and accessories. Patio Pools showroom and retail store is located at 4118 Gunn Highway. Store hours are: Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Pete made an excellent recommendation for replacing a large tree that was giving us problems (which he pointed out would only get worse) with something entirely different that will be much more attractive and much easier to maintain. His crew arrived on time and they were very professional throughout. They even took extra time to show me a few tricks for maintaining the new trees. Frankly, for the price we paid, I was surprised at the size of the crew and the amount of equipment they brought, but the made short work of the entire project. Plus, they had to remove some curbing and plants to access the tree. When they were done, they replaced everything and you cannot tell they

SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: NEW SAT EXAM ON AUGUST 26TH, 2017 This means exam results will be back in time for UF admissions the first of November and applications for early admission to other colleges and universities, which has been a major problem with the SAT in prior years. The first ACT Exam of the fall is scheduled for Saturday, September 10th. As mentioned in my last article, many students and parents prefer to prepare for the SAT and the ACT over the summer so I have many options. My prep classes can be taken individually, or the SAT and ACT can be combined which saves 15 class hours from taking them separately because of their overlapping material. Rising seniors like having the time to really focus and study with results known early in the fall. If strong, then no further prep or tests are needed; if not quite what desired, there is time to take it again. Rising juniors like to see how well they can do, plus this is a perfect time to prep for the PSAT in Octo-

ber and have the best shot at a national merit scholarship. Rising sophomores like the preparation, especially those aiming for “Top 25” or “Top 10” colleges and universities and possibly major scholarships. My classes can start in early June after the last ACT exam on June 10th, or in July or early August, depending upon whether a student wants to take one or two classes a week, and how we need to schedule around family vacations, jobs, or other time requirements. Make sure and check when your high school begins classes in early August because they keep starting earlier and earlier each year. Classes can be private or semiprivate, and my maximum class is three students. Often, students have friends or “study buddies” they would like to prepare with. I do like to schedule our Dress Rehearsal Exam and follow-up Review shortly before the actual exam. If you would like to talk with me further about your student and

my classes, please contact me at 727-253-0639 or at wwa0811@mykolab.com. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve 200 – 350 points on the Writing, Reading, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to eight of the top ten universities in the country, seventeen of the top twentyfive, and many schools in Florida. These schools include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Air Force and Merchant Marine Service Academies, Penn State, LSU, Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, FIU, New College of Florida, Stetson, and Jul-

This year, he also tutored three juniors who scored at the national merit finalist/semi-finalist levels on the most recent PSAT. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

The Significance of Early Childhood Reading and Writing As a VPK teacher, and I want to express the importance of early childhood reading and writing. I gained interest in these subjects when my son was four years old and I asked myself, “What can I do to ensure that my son has a successful education?” Being a VPK teacher has taught me that both parents and teachers need to instruct the child early and help them improve their skills in reading and writing. It is important to teach children how to hold a book correctly, recognize letter sounds, know which letters are capitalized and lowercased. Also, to hear and identify sounds in spoken words. Strong reading skills are important for young children, In order to identify those who struggle with reading as early as possible and to help them develop early literacy and learning skills. Through my experience in working with young children, phonological awareness is essential. It is the ability to hear and identify sounds, practice rhymes, and syllables. Introducing new vocabulary words to young children, like reading stories to them, can strengthen their skills

in reading and writing. My favorite books to read to children, in order to help them learn sounds and rhyming, are Dr. Seuss and Clifford “The Big Red Dog.” Through listening comprehension and understanding the meaning of words they frequently hear, gives young children motivation to read. Strong writing skills are important in pre-K for communication. The children are able to draw and describe their drawings with others. To begin, children learn to write their names from left to right, top to bottom. Writing takes a lot of practice and I try to give them a lot of opportunities for children to improve their writing. During my experience, I observed as the children enjoyed learning letters and sounds in the classroom. By the end of the year, the children are able to recall information from books and gain knowledge on reading and writing. Teaching these skills to each child is important, in order to help them for their future. Evis Petromilo VPK Teacher
