Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

From The Editor Carla Selby First of all, I hope that all of you and your loved ones stayed safe during the storm. My husband Matt Selby, my mother and I, drove to Gainesville after being told to evacuate from Hillsborough County Zone "A." We did have friends and family in other areas of Tampa Bay kindly offering their homes to us, but I convinced my husband to drive us up north, after several news stations made me panic and want to drive somewhere "safer." This experience definitely taught me a lot, and I am glad that the damage was not nearly as catastrophic as it was expected. In Tampa Bay we got lucky! Even though I cannot say the same about other areas of Florida, which are still without power and thousands of Floridians were left without homes. I learned the value of staying calm, because panicking and stressing does not help anyone… I learned the value of having generators on standby, the value of canned goods and clean water, the value of living in a solid concrete home, the value of knowing the rules of the road at intersections without power, and the value of surrounding yourself with family, good friends and caring neighbors. In this type of situation, it is good knowing that you could knock on the house next door knowing you will be greeted with a smile and offered a place to sleep, a bottle of water and even a hot meal

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

(or protein bar) if you are hungry. I must admit... I am not a social butterfly, I am kind of shy and reserved and always try my best to stay out of other people's business. So when I was walking around my complex in the midst of the evacuation, I was shocked and definitely pleased that so many of my neighbors walked up to me to make sure I had a safe place to stay. It warmed my heart, and it made me want to make an effort to say "Good morning Cindy how are your kids?" whenever I see her walking to her car every morning, or "Hi Pete, how is work going?" when I see him walking his dog in the nearby park. It definitely takes a village. Even though what is happening all around the world is pretty disheartening, and it makes you question your faith in God and in humanity, especially when you see news about looters taking merchandise from closed businesses in the middle of the storm, you have to still have faith. Faith that "this too shall pass," and we will rebuild and we will get out this stronger than before, as long as we do it together. As long as we help one another, no matter their race, religion or social status. And even though news about people leaving their pets behind broke my heart, hundreds of beautiful stories keep emerging every day since the storm, stories that will warm your heart and make you believe that not all is lost. That there are still good caring people out there willing to step up and help

those in need. Multiple businesses that advertise with us have selflessly offered free food, supplies, shelter and incredible discounts on their services for those needing anything from clothing and groceries to tree removal services and debris removal, etc. It is in times like these, that we as a community need to stick together. In my country, Venezuela, which is currently also going through a lot, we have a saying that goes "En La Union Esta La Fuerza," which means; "The strength is in the joining." The joining of the families, friends, neighbors, the joining of our Tampa Bay community, the joining of every one of us in our beautiful state of Florida… the joining of this entire country, to help those who need it most. Our sunshine state needs us, our country needs us, Puerto Rico needs us, Mexico needs us. If there is anything you can do to help, please do. Here at Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles are currently organizing a big drive, and donating supplies to different affected areas. If you want to donate food, water or clothing, please email me directly at carla@nnlflorida.com and we'll make sure your donations go where they are needed the most. Prayers without action means nothing. Faith without works is dead. "You pray for the hungry. Then you feed them. This is how prayers work." - Pope Francis. Thank you for reading! Stay safe, humble and united.

Local State Farm Agents Gives Customers Peace of Mind By Deborah Bostock-Kelley Recently Hurricane Irma’s near miss of hundreds, if not thousands, of homes in Tampa Bay created many questions for homeowners and renters throughout our area. Once a hurricane is named, pending the timing of the approach to a certain area, insurance companies place a moratorium on the binding of new business. For those individuals that want to purchase Flood insurance, there is a thirty day wait before it can go into effect. During the days leading up to Hurricane Irma, State Farm insurance agent Roy Hooker and his staff have been extremely busy helping their clients review their coverages and purchasing needed insurance. Certainly, after watching the flooding devastation of Hurricane Harvey, many homeowners have come to realize how imperative flood insurance is to live in the Sunshine State. Many homeowners do not realize that their homeowner policy does not cover flood damage, only a

6

OCTOBER 2017

separate Flood policy will cover any flood damage. Over 80 percent of the homes flooded in Houston do not have flood coverage, and most are in an area not requiring flood insurance. Roy, emphasized over and over, how important it is for his clients to consider carrying flood insurance. He and his staff are more than happy to provide anyone with a flood quote to assist them in determining if they will carry it. State Farm is a multi-product company ranging from homeowners, flood, auto, life insurance to financial products – virtual banking services like checking and savings accounts and CDs. “Our main function today is to focus on the insurance needs of the family, and to help them understand the coverages and limits of their policies,” said Roy. Whether it be in person, or over the phone, their goal is to review the individual needs of the family, and to share with them their options. There are hundreds of different combinations of coverages for an

auto policy, and dozens of combinations for a homeowner policy. Roy and his team have found that many of his new clients did not have an understanding of what they had purchased and the possible repercussions. Unfortunately, for some, insurance has become a commodity and people shop just for the cheapest price without understanding the financial risk. While the internet has become a valuable tool for everyone to use, if you are not a well-informed insurance consumer, you can quickly place your family’s financial position in jeopardy. In order to help protect the consumer when they use the internet for their auto quotes, State Farm Insurance will then forward the quote to Roy’s staff for review. They will have the opportunity then to review your choices and discuss with you the options and explain the coverages. Roy warned, “Don’t let a quick, economy price quote win out over thorough protection. These unlucky policyholders have learned the hard

For Ad Info 813-928-6124 • NNLFlorida.com

Roy Hooker lesson that a cheaper insurance premium isn’t always the best option.” Roy explained that one in every 5 drivers is uninsured, and, of the 4 out of 5 drivers that are insured, a large percentage of them only carry 10/20/10 insurance. If a driver is liable in an accident, he may not have

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

enough coverage to pay for the injuries and property damage. In that case, he may be personally responsible for these expenses which can result in a financial crisis for his family. For an individual with an auto policy with 10/20/10 limits of coverage, if they caused an accident, the policy would only pay a total of $10,000 for any one person’s injuries or disabilities, and a total of $20,000 for all injuries in the car. Any additional dollars would have to then be paid by the driver causing the accident. The last number, Roy explained is the total amount of

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

insurance the company would pay for property damage. For instance, if a new BMW was totaled and the cost to replace it was $70,000, the insurance company would pay $10,000 and the driver would owe the remaining balance of $60,000. “This is what happens when you make auto insurance a commodity and people are only buying on price alone. Most people do not realize the financial risk they may be putting themselves in,” he said. “They opt for the stripped-down bare-boned policy and find themselves underinsured”. And what about a homeowner’s policies? “If your insurance agent hasn’t taken the time to explain your policy and go over your coverages, I encourage you to come in today and let us review your policy and explain

the coverages and limits to you. There are many options and variables with a homeowner policy, and we really want to help our clients get the best coverage for their needs.” Roy continued to emphasis the need for individuals to take the time when purchasing their insurance and sit down with an agent. Make sure the agent is experienced, representing a top-rated company, and has your best interest at heart. Make sure they share all of the options with you, with a complete summary of the advantages and disadvantages of each. Buying insurance over the phone and the internet is certainly time saving, and convenient, but you have so much more at risk than just the few minutes you save by not stopping by an agent’s office. Don’t settle for second best, when your family’s financial future is at stake. When starting his career in insurance, it was important for Roy to choose a trust-worthy company and State Farm is rated number one in auto insurance since 1942, number one in homeowner’s insurance, and number one in life insurance. When shopping for different types of insurance, the variations and options can be overwhelming, but Roy and his team take time to get to know their clients, learn about the lifestyles and help them make the best decision for their family’s budget and its financial future. Using a laminated chart, Roy shows his clients the many different levels of auto protection available. He helps them select the policy that best meets their needs, at a price they can afford. As a leader in the insurance industry, Roy and his staff have the ability to provide the financial backing and stability of a large company, but also the warmth and personalized attention - quality customer service that so many other companies lack. “Our clients know they can trust us. I am extremely big on building relationships with my clients and I love what I do,” he said. “My goal when I started this business 47 years ago – my responsibility is to help you understand. When you leave here, if I can educate you and help you better understand what your financial

For Ad Info 813-928-6124 • NNLFlorida.com

risk is, you can base your decision how much risk you’re willing to take.” Roy has earned the LUTCF (Life Underwriter Training Council) designation, a Fellowship awarded by The American College and The National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. In order to help his clients and to run his business with the highest level of expertise, he is supported with a highly experienced staff that includes Suzan, Denise, Danielle, and Kylie. Both Suzan and Denise have over 40 years of State Farm experience. State Farm offers smartphone apps that enable their clients to check their policy anytime, anywhere. This is extremely convenient, should you get into an accident, as with just a click of a button, roadside assistance can be on its way. In addition, it gives you the opportunity to file a claim immediately and provides step by step instructions of exactly what to do, such as taking the necessary pictures of the accident, and contacting the right people. Also, as long as you have your phone, you never have to worry about not having your insurance card, as it is saved in your State Farm app. Roy takes pride in his community involvement supporting local businesses, organizations including Idlewild Baptist Church, American Red Cross and Junior Special Olympics. But what he enjoys best about his job is, of course, helping people. “When someone walks out of this office, we’ve helped them protect their family and their future. When I was just starting out, I had a district manager tell me, Roy, you are going to be able to do something that very few people can do. You’re going to be able to punch holes of light in the darkness of their lives,” Roy said. “Whether it’s providing life insurance, auto insurance, home insurance, health insurance or protecting their financial investment, opening the agency is one of the best decision I’ve ever made in my life.” For more information visit www.royhooker.net or contact Roy and his team at 813.855.1111 or visit his office at 10973 Countryway Blvd to get the best coverage to protect you and your family. something that the Loiacano family is very proud of, and Jason shared, “There are only 250 Owens Corning Platinum Roofing Contractors across the U.S., of which only 14 are nominated for a seat on the contractor advisory board. It is an honor that only one-percent of companies achieve. We get a chance to play an active role in the decisions and development of Owens Corning’s line of products and services.” Jason adds, “This is a benefit to our customers because we will be the first to know about and the first to be able to install new products in roofing and insulation. For instance, we recently began offering clients upgrades to their attic insulation, which can reduce energy costs up to 30%.” Customers can choose to upgrade their attic insulation at the same time as their roof replacement, or it is also offered as a stand-alone service with no roof services. Done Rite Roofing uses Owens Corning’s AttiCat® blown-in attic insulation; millions of tiny air pockets give the material its insulating power and because fiberglass insulation will not settle, it maintains the same energy-saving level

over time, keeping the home comfortable for years to come. Owens Corning also has provided Done Rite Roofing a platform to help our country’s military servicemen and servicewomen through the Owens Corning Deployment Project. Done Rite Roofing was among select roofing contractors that were handpicked by Owens Corning to help with this worthwhile project. Jason says all of the employees at Done Rite Roofing are looking forward to helping military families. Rave Reviews for Done Rite! Verna Blackwell says, “Done Rite Roofing is an excellent and professional company. They accomplished my complex roofing problems efficiently and quickly. The team was speedy and was able to get a new roof entirely installed in 3 days. Overall we’re pleased with the quality of the work and service, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend friends that are having roof issues.” Mike T. says, “From start to finish, Done Rite Roofing provided a fair estimate, met their deadline, had outstanding workmanship, and took

the time to answer any questions I may have regardless of how insignificant they may seem. I would highly recommend Done Rite Roofing!” Brian says, “I’ve never experienced such professionalism and dedication as I seen with Steve and Greg. These men let me know what was wrong with the roof as well as work diligently throughout the day. The work they performed and the professionalism they showed I was extremely pleased. Steve and Greg thank you for such a great job.” Susan says, “You can’t beat the service that is provided by Done Rite Roofing. The company stuck to their original quote, to the penny. They also did not try to up-sale me. They under promised, and over delivered.” Throughout the entire roofing project, Done Rite Roofing wants to make sure that their clients are completely satisfied. Jason and Christina’s son actively checks every project to ensure all employees are following safety standards, and Owens Corning inspects the installation once it is complete; just two more ways that Done Rite Roofing makes sure

Now we are bigger and better than ever and are the number one cleaning service in Tampa Bay. Maria truly appreciates Donna as well, and considers her a mentor. “Customers love how much time Donna takes to meet, greet and explain everything we have to offer them in person,” says Maria. “We are branching out more into commercial cleaning. Such as, doctors’ and real estate offices, insurances agencies and other small businesses.” Steve Insolia, who is in charge of the other division; Window cleaning, tile and grout cleaning, Donna says, “He has been a great

standards to provide fresh, handmade, from scratch treats - always! Word-of-mouth from happy customers have allowed Sweet Magnolia Bakery to expand to two fabulous locations in order to better serve the community. Satisfied customer Linda says, “Went in to get something special for my husband's birthday...staff was extremely nice and helpful with picking out a yummy treat. I got him a carrot cake cupcake; said it was the best he ever had. We also purchased a gluten free chocolate with raspberry filling, a yellow cake with strawberry champagne filling; both with butter cream frosting. A note to remember, always allow them to come up to room temperature so the butter softens. So good! Made with top notch ingredients. Not your average bakery. Plus it was great to have some gluten free options!” “I love this new bakery, great location and style. My husband is British and he always complains that we don’t have "real" bakeries here” says Sarah. “He was impressed by the quality and made-from-scratch recipes. Love the soups and sandwiches. Perfect all in one stop for lunch, treats, birthday or wedding cakes and elegant desserts for your dinner party. We will definitely be back often.” Chris raves, “I've been to a lot of bakeries before, and trust me when you see my belly you will know this to be true. They not only have baked goods but they make excellent soup and sandwiches too. I wish I would have known about Sweet Magnolia Bakery before I got married, because I would have not wasted my time going to eight different other bakeries to do cake tastings. I would have just made the decision to get a cake with these good folks. Excellent customer service with a smile. I from here on out will buy all my baked goods including any family or friends birthday cakes. Absolutely to die for!” At Sweet Magnolia Bakery you can truly taste the difference. The creativity, imagination, and passion that goes into every menu item gives Sweet Magnolia Bakery a type of sweet baked magic that can be seen and tasted! Don't miss out on this sweetness!

Chef and founder of Sweet Magnolia Bakery, Haylee Shaddock (above) has loved the art and magic of baking since she was a young girl (below).

system and helps the processes function efficiently. Sweating is a safe and natural way to heal and maintain good health. Westchase Colonics offers Infrared Sauna Detox which is one of the healthiest and most effective methods for inducing a detoxifying sweat. Far infrared saunas are believed to be more effective than traditional saunas because in a far infrared sauna only 80 to 85% of the sweat is water with the non-water portion being cholesterol, fat-soluble toxins and toxic heavy metals. It is recommended that therapy time be no more than 30 minutes with the optimal sauna experience occurring between 100° and 130°F. After each session and ridding your body of its toxins, natural sauna detox may help relieve any unfavorable symptoms, prevent future illness and increase overall health and vitality. Each session is designed by Missy at Westchase Colonics and based on each client’s experience and goals.
