Spring is here, and along with it, comes the best King Mackerel and Tarpon fishing of the year in Tampa Bay! I’m really excited to catch these fish with my friends, family and readers of Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles! As many of you know I do contests throughout the year and give away fishing charters as grand prizes. I’m not going to lie, in 2013 when my sister called me and asked if I wanted to get my Captain’s license with her, I said “C’mon, you just want to be known as ‘Captain Morgan’ don’t you?!” I didn’t take it seriously, and never at the time thought either of us would ever use our license. But now just about every one of my weekends is either booked for a charter, or I’m taking out clients and readers on a fishing adventure! I’m really proud to announce that my very talented and beautiful Fiancé, Carla, has joined our team as Creative Director! Carla is one of the most creative designers I’ve ever seen! If you notice that this issue is a little more appealing to the eye than anything else you’ve seen in South Tampa, it’s all Carla. Carla is also an amazing writer, and will be doing a number of stories for us including the “Dining with Carla” Section. If the “Dining with” sounds familiar, you may remember my Grandmother Elaine who did the “Dining with Elaine” section about 10 years ago. She sadly passed in 2009 but I know she has been looking down from above and I 100% know she would love Carla. My Grandma was Italian and Carla, although from Venezuela and sounds like Sophia Vergara (at least I think so) is of Italian descent. They both share a passion for cooking and great food! I’m so excited to add Carla to my family!

Continuing a Family Recipe of Success My Father Tim Selby started publishing in Tampa almost 25 years ago and our magazines have always been family owned and operated, so Carla fits right in with our team. Speaking of our team, and speaking of family, my Uncle Jim O’ Reilly has been working with my Dad since early 2004 and has been our General Manager since 2007. It’s likely, if you’ve ever called the office, you’ve had the pleasure of speaking with him. I sold my first ad for my Dad in 2006 as a senior in High School. After I finished up with my University schooling, and before starting my own branches of Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles in the Carrollwood area in 2013 and expanding back into New Tampa last year, I helped my Dad as he expanded into 4 markets. My Mother, Doreen, has also been my Dad’s billing manager since day one and now my Aunt Tina (Jim’s Wife) helps my Mom. Tony Sica, Dave Do and Kim Thomas may not be blood family but they have been working with us for over 10 years! We all have the same goal of providing this wonderful place we call home with a useful and informative guide all about South Tampa and surrounding areas. Our publication, both in print and online serves as the perfect “Local Go-To Guide” for neighborhood businesses and events. Thanks for reading this edition Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles and Thank you for being LOYAL TO LOCAL!

URGENT CARE VS. ER You fall off your bike and cut your leg. You think you need stitches, but where do you go? Urgent care or emergency room? Which one is right for you?

It’s important to understand the differences between an urgent care and emergency room (ER). ER visits have longer wait times and cost much more than an urgent care visit. If a medical condition is life- or limb-threatening, then you should go to the ER. If the medical condition is non-life threatening or something you would typically see your primary care physician for, then you should go to an urgent care. Urgent care clinics can manage a variety of medical conditions that need to be treated right away, such as cuts, scrapes, sprains and broken bones. Many urgent cares have on-site services, including X-Rays, lab work, TB testing and immunizations and offer treatments, such as stitches and breathing treatments, to provide you the care you need and save you a trip to the ER. Urgent care clinics can also take care of you when you can’t be seen by your primary care

physician. Common symptoms evaluated at an urgent care include: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Allergies Animal/Insect Bites Burns Cough Diarrhea/Constipation Ear pain Eye pain Fever Flu Joint pain/Back pain Nausea/Vomiting Painful urination Rashes Skin/Nail infections Sore throat STD testing

The ER should be reserved for lifethreatening injuries, such as severe wounds, amputations or poisonings. You also need immediate care at the ER if you are experiencing: • Signs of a heart attack, including persistent chest pain, especially if it radiates to the arm, sweating, vomiting, sudden weakness or dizziness

• Signs of a stroke, like sudden numbness of face, arms or legs, severe headache, difficulty speaking • Severe shortness of breath or difficulty breathing • Coughing or vomiting of blood • Complications during pregnancy • Seizures • Severe head or eye injuries, involving loss of consciousness or loss of vision • Suicidal thoughts Urgent care clinics are becoming increasingly popular. They are convenient with late and weekend hours and no appointments are necessary. A+ Family Urgent care is Tampa’s newest health clinic. It’s located at 3345 S. Dale Mabry Hwy. Providers are on site 7 days a week from 10am to 10pm. It offers all the above urgent care services plus school/sport physicals, work physicals, DOT physicals, immigration physicals, auto accidents and workers’ compensation evaluations. So, if you have a non-life-threatening condition and don’t feel like waiting hours at the ER, save yourself time and money and visit an Urgent Care, or come visit me at visit A+ Family Urgent Care! HOUZIO

100% SERVICE, 1% COMMISSION Eighty-three percent of people view their home as a good financial investment, and a 2014 survey by the National Association of Realtors (NAR) found not only is their home the biggest single asset most people own, but it’s also filled with special memories . The average seller has lived in their home for a decade so it’s no wonder when it comes time to selling their property, people can get a little emotional. Traditionally, real estate brokerage services have been delivered as part of a bundled package including services such as assisting the seller in setting a list price, marketing and advertising a property, listing the property in the MLS, handling buyer inquiries and scheduling and arranging showings to prospective home buyers. The fee structure for these bundled packages of services has generally been paid by a commission on the gross sale price of the property, between 5 and 7%. In recent years a process of Flat-Fee Listings and the unbundling of services has accelerated.

6 April 2017

Why pay more commission fees & get less real estate? Promising 100% Service and 1% Commission is the Houzio way! You will have access to the same great traditional real estate services while paying one flat fee. When selling with Houzio, sellers immediately save THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS of their hard earned equity that typically goes to listing agents as their commission. Seller’s will still need to offer compensation to the buyer’s agent of around 2.5% and 3%, but can expect to save THOUSANDS of dollars on the transaction while selling their home for TOP DOLLAR. For example: Let’s assume the sale price of a home in Tampa is $250,000. With many traditional brokers that may charge 6% total commission, that would equal commission fees of nearly $15,000. With Houzio, sellers would pay just $10,000 (assuming 1% listing commission to us, 3% to the

buyer’s agent) and you save over 33% or $5,000! Since this is quite different than how many traditional brokerages work, you may be curious what you can expect when listing with Houzio. Quite a great deal, really. Houzio Realty is the brainchild of Realtors/Brokers and friends, Lindsay Aydelotte and Marta Wrzesniewski. The two have an undeniable energy; in fact, they met at the gym and after talking, realized they had more in common than pursuing good health for themselves and their families. Lindsay and Marta are each licensed Realtors and Brokers, both have successfully invested in Real Estate, and are entrepreneurs who know the value of setting goals and the thrill of achieving them. Beyond that, the women found that they share a passion for helping their Real Estate clients get the most return on their investment. Perhaps that is why this brand new company with the intuitive and smart Real Estate model had five listings and two buyers under contract within 30 days of launching! Their website, HouzioRealty.com, had 12,000 hits in the first 30 days. Lindsay explains, “Technology has changed the Real Estate market. We have tools and systems at our fingertips, which save us time and money, so why not pass that savings on to our clients? The world is full of people who sell real estate. Some of them are efficient, focused, and willing to go the extra mile and then there are some that are not. Don’t you worry, selling your home doesn’t have to be a stressful thing! When you’re looking for a real estate professional to help you, know that above all else Houzio Realty will always put you first. This is your dream and Houzio Realty is your advocate to help you make that dream come true. It is important when choosing a Realtor to sell your house, look for an agent with a wealth of experience in the industry as well as selling homes in your price range. Houzio’s team is filled with the most talented individuals in realty today

having over 20 years of experience in the Florida market. At Houzio they will provide each of their clients with the best service to streamline the process and help make the experience as easy and stress-free as possible! Your team at Houzio will market your home aggressively. Your agent has access to important information on sales of comparable housing including more recent sales information than is publicly accessible online. They will suggest a list price that they think

will best attract buyers to your home. You want as many buyers as possible to see and know that your house is on the market. This also means your colleague at Houzio may recommend staging techniques to make the place look great, maximizing the listing with professional quality photographs, and showing the house to prospective buyers. Most importantly, the agent will screen potential buyers so you can deal only with serious prospects.

Review for Team Member: Kelly Milinkovich

This was our first house we were buying, and Kelly was very attentitive to our needs and wants. She helped us very step of the way. Her knowledge within the market was very impressive. I would highly recommend her as your realtor in the Tampa Bay area! “I knew Marta would be our realtor after our first conversation. Being a high level corporate sales person, I was nervous about the intensity of and commitment level of an agent. She exceeded every expectation and Houzio’s 1% commissions was exactly what we needed to get the highest down payment possible for our next home. I would recommend Marta and Houzio to everyone. Great experience and happy customers here.” - D. Sayre Our realtor Lindsay Aydelotte of Houzio was amazing! Purchasing a home can be one of the most stressful financial transactions, not to mention emotional. Lindsay took the burden off our shoulders, and worked tirelessly with us after hours and weekends, to accommodate our crazy schedule. Not only was she professional, but she had such an upbeat, warm personality, that it made it such a pleasure to work with her. Additionally, her negotiation skills are second to none. Thanks again Lindsay, you rock!! - S. Larson The passion and reviews speak for themselves. The 2017 Tampa Bay Rays Starting Rotation By Nate Miller If you’re a baseball fan, then you’ve probably heard the old saying “You can never have enough pitching!” The 2017 Tampa Rays have a pitching staff that is both youthful and promising and is led by ace right-hander Chris Archer. Tampa Bay will indeed be depending on Archer has they look to put last year’s record of 68-94 behind them. Standing at 6’3” and weighing in at 190 pounds, Archer looks to bounce back from a tough 2016 campaign, where he compiled a record of 9-19 with an ERA of 4.02. When this season is in full stride, he will get his chance to right the ship, and help lead the team. Another arm to watch this coming year is that of Alex Cobb. Unfortunately, Cobb has the uphill task of coming back from Tommy John surgery. He only appeared in five games last season in which he put together a record of 1-2 over 22 innings of work. It really is anyone’s guess as to how Cobb will do in 2017. He is fully recovered, so that is a plus to keep in mind. Many ball players come back from Tommy John surgery with varied results. A perfect example would be the Texas Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish. While Darvish has looked solid since his surgery,

10 April 2017

one cannot help notice that he has lost some velocity. It would not be a surprise if we see a little of the same from Alex Cobb, but again this is baseball where anything can happen. Cobb could have the season of his life thus putting the procedure behind him. So have faith Rays fans! Joining Archer and Cobb in the starting rotation will be Jake Odorizzi, Blake Snell and possibly Matt Andriese. Of those three, Odorizzi put up the most solid numbers in 2016. He had a record of 10-6 and posted an ERA of 3.69 with 166 strikeouts over 187.2 innings pitched. Even in today’s specialized pitching style, the starting rotation is key for any organization. Starters are watched closer than ever, but they are still expected to perform. Unfortunately, you rarely see a complete game anymore, but that doesn’t mean that these guys can’t pitch. With that in mind, the Rays do have some arms that they could turn to in a spot start situation. Even though he only has 19 career starts at the Major League level, Alex Colome could be an option for the rotation, and at least as a short term solution should the Rays need him. Matt Andriese is also another possible candidate for the rotation in 2017. He was a .500 pitcher

last year at 8-8, but he is more than capable of giving this team some much needed innings. He fared well during his three appearances in Spring Training, with a 2.84 ERA. Andriese will fit nicely in either the third or fourth spot in the stating five. Guys like Andriese get overlooked all the time because they may not have the most spectacular numbers. However, but looking at the big picture, the season is very long, some guys get hurt, and others don’t perform as expected. Things do tend to get in the way over the course of a 162 game marathon. That is when you need pitchers like Colome and Andriese. Teams rely on their type for durability, and to step up at a moment’s notice. Among other things, baseball is a game of character, and in situations like this, character is shown and tested. They are here for a reason. No matter how long they are out there, they are expected to perform under pressure at a level that most people cannot. 2017 is a blank slate, and Rays fans are counting on these guys to do great things this year. Not just the rotation, but also everyone on the roster. Rays fans should be very hopeful. After all, Baseball is a game where great things happen everyday!

A Matthew T. Bunch Foundation Celebration The Matthew T. Bunch Foundation is sponsoring a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta and Cook Off at the Tampa Firefighters Museum, located at 720 East Zack St., Tampa, FL 33602, on Friday, May 5, 2017, 6 to 9 p.m. In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is observed in remembrance of the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. In America, Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican American culture. For the Matthew T. Bunch Foundation, Cinco de Mayo has taken on significance for a different and very special reason. Driver/Engineer Bunch was hired by Tampa Fire Rescue in September 2009. In September 2014, he was diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive cancer. His brothers and sisters at Tampa Fire Rescue came together in support of Mathew hosting many events as he sought treatment for a cure. After fighting bravely for eight months, Matthew passed away on May 5, 2015, at the age of 27, on the very day that Tampa Fire Rescue had planned a fundraiser for his benefit at the Bad Monkey in Ybor City. The event took place with an incredible turnout as his Tampa Fire Rescue family and friends remembered him with honor showing a level of support his family had not expected or ever experienced.

A week later Tampa Fire Rescue held a Celebration of Life for Driver/Engineer Bunch at Water Works Park in Tampa followed by a reception at the Tampa Firefighters Museum. Again, Matthew’s family was overwhelmed by the beautiful ceremony held in his honor, with Mayor Bob Buckhorn and TFR Chief Thomas Forward in attendance, a Tampa Police Department motorcade, and approximately 300 of his Tampa Fire Rescue family as well. The Bunch family decided shortly after that we would give back to Tampa Fire Rescue in an effort to express our gratitude for their many acts of generosity. In early 2016, Matthew’s family started the Matthew T. Bunch Foundation with the specific mission of supporting Tampa Fire Rescue and their associated organizations and charities. In May 2016, the Matthew T. Bunch Foundation hosted its first event at the Bad Monkey and raised funds for the benefit of Tampa Firefighters Museum, Tampa Firefighters Charity Fund, and Friends of Tampa Fire. In November 2016, the foundation sponsored a Tampa Fire Rescue Women & Wine Evening at the Tampa Firefighters Museum in support of the Women of Tampa Fire Rescue.

This year the foundation will sponsor a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta at the Tampa Firefighters Museum and will feature a Cook Off, Mexican Food and Refreshments, Live Entertainment, and Activities for Children. As we celebrate Cinco de Mayo this year, remembering Driver/Engineer Bunch, our hope is that it is a time of “Fun”raising and festivities. Donations will graciously be accepted. Sydney Has a Sister S C H O L A R S H I P FO U N DATION By Carla Dubis

In the first two years of the foundation, the family raised an unbelievable amount of almost $45,000!

Giving recognition to children whose siblings suffer from Autism is the main goal of the Sydney Has a Sister Scholarship Foundation. The cost of a higher education is expensive and can be a burden to many families. Sydney Has a Sister recognizes the sacrifices students have to make for the benefit of their sibling with autism. All proceeds collected are awarded to college bound students who have supported their family and sibling(s) impacted by this condition. Some of the funds are also allocated for other good causes, like purchasing school supplies and holiday gifts for people impacted with autism. The non-profit organization, created by Ernie and Becky Black of Land O’ Lakes, started in 2013 when Becky, a career specialist at Sunlake High in Land O’ Lakes, went looking for scholarship money for her eldest daughter, Sydney. The Blacks have two lovely daughters, Sydney and Regan. Regan is autistic, and the sacrifices her sister Sydney has made and the tribulations she has had to overcome, inspired her parents to form the Sydney Has a Sister scholarship program. While researching scholarship opportunities, Becky discovered there were no options for kids like her daughter Sydney, a spunky, sweet, caring and extremely smart teen who had long embraced the role of sister, caregiver and best friend to Regan. So almost 5 years ago, in 2013, the Blacks created one.

After recruiting many volunteers to assist the several fund raising efforts and activities, the Blacks were able to award six $1,000 scholarships in 2014, fourteen in 2015 and twenty-four in 2016. The funds were also used to buy classroom supplies for students with disabilities at Lake Myrtle Elementary in Land O’ Lakes and at Weightman Middle School and Wesley Chapel High School. But they did not stop there! Some of the funds were also used to acquire holiday gifts for adults with autism. The non-profit organization has had multiple successful events since the very beginning, such as wine tasting events, silent auctions, superhero pubcrawls, yearly golf scramble and scavenger hunts amongst others. This year is started off strong with the huge success of the “Heroes vs. Villains” Soho Pub Crawl. An upcoming event you will not want to miss is the “Casino Night” happening on April 28, 2017 over at the CL Space in Ybor City, located at 1911 N 13th St w100, Tampa, FL 33605. Tickets are $50 per person and it includes $500 in “gambling money”, food, drinks, music, games and more!

Meet award winning race car driver Robin Bonanno, a true inspiration and exemplar woman that will make you feel you can do anything you set your mind to! Robin is currently the proud owner of the UPS Store at 54 at Collier. Bonanno is also a race car Instructor for both SCCA and was a professional instructor for Richard Petty Enterprises, an accomplished Business Owner and Manager, a snow ski instructor, a devoted wife and a breast cancer survivor and warrior amongst many other things. ”Racing is an endurance sport,” Bonanno said. “I have raced with a broken leg. A little more than a year ago, I raced in the middle of radiation for breast cancer.” If you ever have the pleasure of meeting Robin and engaging in conversation with her, you will quickly realize you are talking to the face of determination. There’s nothing stopping her… not even cancer. She is as strong-willed as she is courageous and her energy is both contagious and intoxicating. Bonanno fought back from her diagnoses and now cherishes the relationships she made along the process, including the one she developed with her treating physician and surgeon, Dr. Charles Cox. Dr. Cox is a world renowned research and education Doctor. The Comprehensive Breast Cancer Program at the University of Florida was initiated in 1984 under his direction. In 1986, Doctor Cox moved the program to the Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute at the University of South Florida. He and his colleagues spearheaded the research and training in the technique for Lymphatic Mapping and Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy in breast cancer patients. Along with the pathology

colleagues, they developed the Intra-Operative Touch Preparation Cytology for the evaluation of surgical margins. With these techniques, they have experienced high success rates in breast conservation and lymph node sparing. Since Robin is now cancer-free for over two years her team’s goal for 2017, 2018 is to gain recognition for Robin’s favorite charity “Dr. Cox’s Breast Cancer Research Charity.” This foundation is administered under the vast umbrella of USF’s (University of South Florida) foundation. Bonanno and her husband, Carl Lunderstadt Sr., who is also her crew chief, need YOUR help raising exposure and awareness for Dr. Cox’s Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Racing is one of Robin’s biggest passions, but so is supporting this particular charity, si nce Dr. Cox was the one who treated her and helped her defeat this life-threatening disease. Robin and Carl’s most fervent desire is to acquire a major sponsor to race a new custom-built corvette race car in the 2017 TRANS-AM International series to bring awareness to this Breast Cancer Research Charity. Robin and Carl will donate their race time, energy and efforts to support Dr. Cox’s Breast Cancer Research, and literally race for a cure! The sponsor will benefit by having Robin Bonanno, a remarkable awardwinning celebrity and breast cancer survivor, spotlighting their brand, product or services in their normal advertising and marketing efforts, and in return these efforts will also bring the much needed attention and awareness to Dr. Cox’s charity and its cause.

YOUR SPONSORSHIP COULD HELP SAVE LIVES.

Major advances in research are giving people with breast cancer hope that one day, sooner than later, there will be a cure. Dr. Cox’s research foundation’s main goal is to help find a cure for breast cancer, which is a disease that attacks 1 out of 8 women. Your sponsorship for this team will be incredibly beneficial for creating awareness for this foundation and generating donations for important life- changing research work for women all over the world. By utilizing a female race car driver and the funding of research for finding a cure to the National epidemic of breast cancer, a sponsor that uses Robin in their marketing and advertising should not only get a decent ROI, but should be able to embellish their company name from their marketing efforts. As we all know, for any charity to raise money, they have to make the public aware of what they are doing and become known to the philanthropic community. It takes money to do this and this charity does not spend any money on advertising or promoting of the Charity as USF insists that all the money received by the foundation goes to their research and education. Robin and Carl will work with the Foundation and the sponsor to help establish promotional events that are appropriate for the selected sponsor and their advertising agency as desired. For more information regarding sponsorship please contact Robin’s husband. Carl Lunderstadt at 352-255-9994

The Tampa Tower Climb is the latest of dozens of 5K Runs & Tower Climbs held all around the United States in support of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Press interested in viewing a Tunnel to Towers ‘smart home’ built here in Tampa Bay in 2014 for SGT Mike Nicholson should contact Event Director, Dustin Miller to coordinate. Firefighter Stephen Gerard Siller was the youngest of seven children born to Mae and George Siller. At the age

of eight, Stephen lost his father, and a year and a half later he also lost his mother, which left him an orphan to be raised by his older siblings. For a while Stephen went through a period of struggle, but thanks to the love of his siblings, and the values instilled in him by his parents, he grew up to be an extraordinary individual and d e d i c a t e d firefighter. More than most, he knew that time was precious and accomplished much in his 34 years. On September 11, 2001, Stephen, who was assigned to Brooklyn’s Squad 1, had just finished his shift, and was on his way to play golf with his brothers when he got word of the first plane hitting the Twin Towers over his scanner. Upon hearing the news, Stephen called his wife Sally and asked her to tell his brothers he would catch up with them later, and returned to Squad 1 to get his gear. Stephen drove his truck to the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, but it had already been closed for security purposes. Determined to carry out his duty, he strapped 60 lbs. of gear to his back, and raced on foot through the tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he gave up his life while saving others. Stephen had everything to live for; a great wife, five wonderful children, a devoted extended family, and friends. Stephen’s parents were lay Franciscans and he grew up under the guiding philosophy of St. Francis of Assisi, whose encouraging and inspirational phrase “while we have time, let us do good” were words that Stephen lived by. Stephen’s life and heroic death serve as a reminder to us all to live life to the fullest and to spend our time here on earth doing good – this is his legacy. Author and family friend Jay Price wrote, “Every momentous event, even a tragedy, has its symbolic figures. September 11th was no different; it just had a few more of them. Rudy Giuliani, Father Mychal Judge, the four guys on United Flight 9 … a hundred more … a thousand. None bigger than Stephen Siller, whose stature only grows with time as New Yorkers and people from around the world follow his footsteps.” For Advertising Info 813-928-6124 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit nnlflorida.com
