Newsom Eye - Amazing LASIK Outcomes! By Matt Selby When you have great testimonials from community members, trust among all soon follows. You and your loved ones can certainly trust your eyes to the incredible staff at Newsom Eye. Last month you read about the Amazing Glaucoma Outcomes Newsom Eye provides, and this month, we’re going to talk about their Amazing LASIK Outcomes! Julie Jacobs is a perfect example of what an Amazing LASIK Outcome looks like. Julie had a high

complex prescription alternating between glasses and contacts for the last 30 years, and shared with us, that she literally could not get out of bed without putting her glasses on. Julie’s eyes would become irritated in her contacts by early evening and finally realized her eye condition was holding her back from doing so many things she loved. Julie decided not to put off LASIK any longer when she learned about Newsom Eye Custom LASIK. If you are considering having laser vision correction (LASIK), your goal is to decrease your dependence

on glasses or contact lenses. At Newsom Eye, their goal is to go well beyond that. They want you to have the quality of vision, improved lifestyle, and peace of mind that thousands of patients have found with their NEWsom EYES. Newsom Eye offers only Bladeless, Customized, Wavefront Optimized® technology treatments on all laser eye surgeries. They don’t do it any other way. While bladed LASIK may be less expensive, they choose to offer only the safest, most predictable and fastest healing procedures. See “Newsom” on page 24.

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

From The Editor Carla Selby As the name denotes, Thanksgiving is a holiday dedicated to the focus of being Thankful. This time of the year gives us that warm, fuzzy feeling. We have a few days where we feel generally thankful and grateful for the wonderful things in our lives. The Oxford Dictionary defines the work "grateful" as "showing an appreciation of kindness." This where the difference lies; being thankful is more of a feeling. Being grateful is an action. It's easy for us to look around the Thanksgiving dinner table and say that we are thankful. Family, friends, and food surround us. In that time, we're currently experiencing that fuzzy feeling that comes with a holiday gathering. We wait for that one time a year in which we can focus on that thankful feeling. But where is the practice of that thankfulness? Thankfulness is the first step. We have to have that initial feeling to build upon, and we build upon it by redirecting our focus onto making gratefulness a steady part of our lives, 365 days a year. But our lives are busy. They distract us from remembering the

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

important things. We get so caught up in our schoolwork, our day job(s), our relationship issues, our bills, and our responsibilities that we forget to shift our perspective on a regular basis. I know that there aren't many of us who each day dwell on how blessed and lucky we are to have the lives that we do. So how do we actually gain that perspective and keep it all year round? The key is keeping gratitude at the forefront of our lives. It's not just thinking about how thankful we are to have what we do. It's about living out that gratitude through the simple things we do every day. When we gear our minds towards focusing on how truly blessed we are, it makes it easier for us to want to bless the other people in our lives. Gratitude is what prompts you to pay for a stranger's meal because you recognize your own financial blessings. Because you see that you can help another person out, which in turns redirects the tone of their day. It's what prompts you to remind your loved ones how important they are to you. It's what encourages you at the end of a long, hard day, because you

know that it's actually been a far better day than you've made it out to be. For me, there is no better feeling than that of giving, so I want to take this opportunity to encourage and invite all of you to spread your gratitude with random acts of kindness, no matter how small, and not just during the Holidays but every chance you get. The smallest acts of kindness can make the biggest difference. Last but not least, in the spirit of gratefulness, I would like to use this media to personally thank my mother, Berardina Tedeschi, for her incredible courage, unconditional love, never ending support and impressive emotional AND physical strength. We recently and unexpectedly lost my father, Julio, her husband of over 35 years. Yet somehow, she continues to be the super loving mom, (and grandmother) she’s always been. I do not know how she does it, but her strength is admirable. Somewhere inside of her lies resilience we never thought possible. I want to thank you mom, and dad up there in heaven, for being my biggest reason to feel thankful, not just during the holidays, but every day of my life. Thank you for reading, have a wonderful November.

Uni K Wax Offers Customers All Natural Waxing Experience Head to Toe By Deborah Bostock-Kelley After over two decades of experience working in the health and beauty industry in New Tampa, November marks the one-year anniversary of exchanging one dream for another for Nurys Nin, owner of Uni K Wax in Carrollwood. In November of 2016, Nurys was saving to put a down payment on a new home when an opportunity arose to take ownership of the Carrollwood franchise location where she was an employee. After heavily weighing the pros and cons, she decided that business ownership would be the legacy she wanted to leave her children. With nearly 40 locations overall, between NY and Florida, Nurys owns the only wax studio location in Tampa. The Carrollwood location features a team of three waxers, while Nurys and her daughter, Vanessa Ramirez manage the reception desk. Having worked with her team prior to

owning the studio, she is proud of the family relationship she has with her waxers. “We have a great group. I was their friend before I was their boss. We are like a family.” The studio uses an exclusive, proprietary elastic-wax formula created with all-natural ingredients, like pine resin and beeswax, that’s applied at body temperature and ensures a comfortable waxing experience, even with sensitive skin. Recognized for having an onsite wax lab, this allows each client to have his or her own wax prepared before every appointment and any leftover discarded. Their attention to hygienic detail is uncompromising. “You only use the amount of wax for the person who is coming for the appointment, dump what is left. Everything is custom to the appointment scheduled,” she said. Bathed in relaxing, soft lighting, the studio is clean, pristine and most

of all, welcoming to a first-timer which includes not only women, but men and teens. Uni K Wax takes both online and phone appointments and walk-ins are also welcome. “Most of the time first time

customers come in a little scared because there is some pain involved. But after they leave, they realize that they thought it was going to be worse. They come back every month.” Nurys recommends her customers

This is why our touch up services are so popular. When you visit regularly, your hair grows back less and thinner, so the service is faster, “she said. “We don’t use strips; our wax is elastic so we pull with the same wax that is applied to the skin.” Uni K Wax list of services read like an anatomy lesson: Eyebrows, temples, cheeks, forehead, lip, jaw, chin, neck, nose, ears, hands, shoulders, underarms, back, breast, stomach, bikini, buttocks, legs, thighs, knees, and toes. With over 180 different services to choose from, for both women and

men, their most famous service is the Brazilian bikini wax and for the man, the commando. Clients can choose services one by one or by different affordable packages. “I love my customers. With services that tend to be private, mostly bikinis, the customers become comfortable working with the same waxer or seeing the same faces,” she said. “I was working for the company for many years so the customers already knew me. When I took over, they were so happy.” Uni K Wax offers all customers a free membership rewards program to earn points to apply to future services. “They get 10 points for every

dollar that they spend and when they book online, they get 2,000 points. Sometimes they accumulate the points and other times, they use them.” Clients get 5,000 points on their birthdays and for recommendations. At Uni K Wax, Nurys strives to provide reliable and fast professional service for this very personal grooming experience. Even the teens have an opportunity to be pampered through their Uni K Teen Club, for 17 and under. Teens have a discounted menu of wax services for eyebrow, upper lip, panty line, arms, underarms, and legs. They too can enjoy the benefits of the membership rewards program. The superb care customers receive doesn’t end at the studio. Uni K Wax

offers a full line of after-care products that are free from parabens, preservatives, and gluten that help extend the results between visits. In November, Nurys is offering a free introductory service for new customers – bikini line, upper lip, or upper arm for women and nostril, bikini line, or shoulder for men. “We offer services from head to toe,” she said and joked, “The only part we don’t do is your hair.” Located at 15720 North Dale Mabry in Tampa, Uni K Wax is open Monday through Friday 10am-7pm, Saturday 10am-6pm, and Sunday, 12-4pm. Nearshore Fishing by Captain Matt Selby By the end of the month, the King and Spanish Mackerel, will start to leave our nearshore wrecks but not to worry, a new and tasty new fish will start to move into their favorite shallow water “Winter holes.” Want to take a guess which fish will be within the reach of many anglers in November -

14

NOVEMBER 2017

March? Grouper! The fish that put the Tampa Bay area, most specifically the waters off St. Pete and Clearwater, on the map when it comes to commercial fishing. Luckily for us, the commercial guys don’t usually bother the nearshore fishing holes many of us recreational fishermen target. Large numbers of Red and Gag Grouper pour into our nearshore

waters with keeper size fish being caught in as shallow as 8 feet and in some cases even less! Very few people know the “secret spots” nearshore that hold quality fish and many of my fishing numbers have been passed down to me for generations. “People don’t realize how many fish they pass up when they decide to make a 40 mile trek or more offshore in search of Grouper. Many spots we found by mistake but we used that

information to find more spots that mimicked the habitat the grouper seemed to like.” -Tim Selby If you’ve never caught a Grouper, you owe it to yourself to feel the raw power of these incredible fish. We end up finding Cobia near the wrecks in the winter time as well, another hard fighting, tasty creature. When you’re ready, lets go fishing! Capt-Matt Selby captainselby1507@gmail.com

Stuffed – Can Someone Pass The Beats? – Thanksgiving Event Benefiting Metropolitan Ministries STUFFED: Can Someone Pass the Beats, is a charitable music festival, aimed towards giving back to the community. There will also be a silent auction and lots of dancing. A portion of the proceeds will go towards making t-shirts and blankets that will be donated to people in need. Scrxtch n Sniff Presents is proud to announce their first annual Thanksgiving charity event in Tampa, Florida, November 22nd. SXS has teamed up with The Orpheum, NU MGMT, Circle Talent Agency, JX Media and Traditions Entertainment to benefit Metropolitan Ministries. Many of us have heard of Metropolitan Ministries, and like me, we may not be fully aware of how much they give back to our communities. Metropolitan Ministries is a local, independent, faith-based nonprofit committed to providing hope. They have been assisting those who need it most since 1972. Their services for the poor and homeless families are offered right here in

But she was always giving stuff away, so when I was a kid, she use to always make me donate every year around the holidays. With five star reviews across the board for customer service and quality product - The Man Cave Warehouse is Florida’s top choice for all things man cave! Chris Fehling says, “I live in Melbourne and found Man Cave Warehouse on craigslist. After looking at decent local used tables going for $800-$1200, I factored in breaking the table down, moving it, and setting it up again at my home. The cost and inconvenience of this just wasn't worth it. I contacted Carson at Man Cave Warehouse and he hooked me up with a beautiful American Made Kasson brand table (all solid wood). For $1500, they re-felted it with the color of my choice, delivered it to Melbourne and set it up. It is awesome and Joey did a great job on the felt. Super pleased. Highly recommend these guys!!” Another happy customer, John

Davis, says, “Just had a new Olhausen pool table installed by the man cave in Tampa. They came out to Lakeland and had it installed and ready to use in no time. The staff at the store really know their stuff and was a great experience. Highly recommend them to anyone. They have a ton of other stuff besides pool tables as well! Definitely worth checking out.” One of the best aspects of The Man Cave Warehouse is that it's truly a family-run business that helps bring families together for memories that will be shared for years. “Newsom” Continued from page 1 Julie shared, “I had thought about LASIK in the past, but did not think I was a candidate due to my high prescription, in addition to being a little intimidated about having a laser procedure on my eyes. However, after meeting Michele at a South Tampa Chamber event, her explanation about the procedure and confidence in Dr. Newsom put my mind at ease. So, I made the appointment almost immediately after meeting her. From my free screening appointment with Devon, who is fantastic by the way to my extremely thorough LASIK exam, I knew I was in the right place. I was a glasses and contact lens wearer for more than 30 years. Now I wake up each day with 20/20 vision! Everything was explained to me in great detail and I felt well cared for every step of the way. I only wish I would've done it sooner. Thank you Newsom Eye,” says Julie. My family and friends of this publication trust Newsom Eye with their vision for good reason. T. Hunter Newsom, MD, has been awarded many accolades, including Best Eye Surgeon by Tampa Tribune’s “Best of the

To date, they have co-managed tens of thousands of laser eye surgeries. I highly recommend Dr. Newsom and his team. You Deserve NEWsom EYES, go get them today and get back to enjoying life the way it was intended.

“Michael’s Grill” Continued from page 1 first set roots over 17 years ago, Michael’s Grill is a cornerstone in the Carrollwood community. Not only providing exceptional food and topnotch service, but also a friendly and welcoming atmosphere where new customers become regulars, which then turn into great friends and end up feeling as part of the Michael’s Grill family. “After being a part of this community for so long, I feel like I can’t go anywhere without running into a friend that I’ve made at our restaurant,” says Chef Michael. “I love sharing my love for good food with the community and Andrea and I really feel like that shines through in the guest’s experience. Over the years, so many of our customers have become friends that we not only see at our restaurant but we also go out with when we have some time for ourselves.” People often ask Andrea and Michael how they can work with each other everyday. When I asked them the same question, Andrea said; “Oh, I love it! Michael and I do everything together and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I feel bad for people whose work schedule makes it difficult to see their spouse on a regular basis. We really don’t want to be apart and when we get the chance to travel we love to head up north and go hiking with our two beautiful Australian Shepherds.” Andrea, Chef Michael and their staff are what truly make dining here an unforgettable experience. The value they bring to their patrons is second to none when it comes to the taste, personalized attention, quality of the food and small touches, such as the scent of fresh cut flowers that decorate each table. At Michael’s Grill you’re guaranteed only the freshest and mouth-watering dishes, as well as the most caring and attentive service on every experience. Michael takes great pride in being the head chef of his restaurant and Andrea is always lighting up the room with her smile and making sure everyone is having a good time. That consistency has earned them special recognition and top reviews from happy and satisfied customers who once discover Michael’s return over and over again. Alyssa N. says “This was some of

the best food I have eaten in a very long time! We had to try the crab cakes as the menu described them as #1 in Tampa Bay and they certainly met expectations as such. We also started with Jeff's Fried Brie and the dish more than exceeded expectations. The flavors were perfectly built. The Brie was crisp, not greasy. The pepper in the crust complimented the slight spice in the strawberry habanero sauce. The dish was sweet, savory, spicy, and perfectly textured. I can't wait to go back for more. For dinner we decided to share an entree since we weren't terribly hungry and we went with the steak au poivre. The filet was perfectly seasoned, melted in your mouth, was perfectly cooked, and had a wonderfully textured crust. The rustic mash and even the seasoned veggies were perfectly seasoned and cooked. The food was so amazing and for the price, you can't beat the quality and flavor of what you're getting here. The wait staff was attentive and kind, and the manager and owner Andrea, was there helping out and talking to all tables, making sure everyone was having the perfect evening. What a hidden gem! I will happily come back for more.” I’ve personally known Michael and Andrea for a few years now, and their passion for their restaurant is nothing short of inspiring. Running a family business even though rewarding, can also be quite stressful, but these two are pros. Like I said, Andrea will always look happy to see you, and she will be there greeting everyone, making amazing drinks, like her famous sangria and making sure you are well taken cared of. It’s debatable whether it’s her smile or her awesome English accent that makes everyone she interacts with, immediately get into a good mood. I think it’s a combination of both, along with the scrumptious food, of course. Michael’s Grill also has a full liquor bar, which includes a wine and beer list. You can order wines by the glass or by the bottle. Make sure to ask Andrea about the hidden wine list, which has special wines not listed on the regular menu, or let her make you her special signature Sangria. Michael Parise says, “The sangria was unique and wonderful; best I ever tasted.” I invite you to try it on your next visit! I promise you will not be disappointed, but you have to try for yourself. To this day, Chef Michael will still

pause for a second to watch guests try his food from the kitchen. Michael really enjoys watching people’s first impressions when the food arrives. Particularly when they express out loud how good something tastes or how impeccable the presentation is. “If I have a second, I love observing people try our food for the first time. It’s very gratifying to know I can make people happy with what I prepare. I even scroll through reviews online because the positive feedback is what makes me enjoy coming to work everyday,” says Michael. “The years have just flown by for us. It doesn’t feel like work when you’re passionate

about what you do and Andrea and I love it!”

Some of Our Favorites My wife, Carla, is obsessed with breakfast food (and mimosas). So it comes to no surprise that one of her favorite dishes on the menu is the Croque-Madame. If you’re not familiar with this delicious treat, it consists of juicy grilled ham and copious amounts of melted cheese, drizzled with béchamel sauce and topped with a fried egg. This scrumptious dish is served with house potatoes, and don’t forget to order the mimosa to top it all off. Just check Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

out the photo on our front cover! It really speaks for itself. The award-winning signature Crab Cakes and the she-crab bisque make the perfect lunch or dinner starter for any seafood lover (which we both are.) If we have a group of us, I’ll throw in another appetizer, and my go-to is usually the Wasabi Crusted Ahi-Tuna. If you want something on the lighter side, and you don’t want to settle when it comes to flavor or quantity, our pick is the Salmon Strawberry Fields Salad. Every bite is bursting with flavors that compliment one another perfectly. The caramelized onions, apples, pineapple and strawberry vinaigrette dressing make for an explosion of perfectly combined flavors, and the blackened salmon that tops the salad off, is always cooked to perfection and to your liking. As far as sandwiches go, the Chicken Julie is one of my all-time favorites. I’ve talked about this sandwich a lot, but if you’ve ever had it, you will understand why I never get tired of eating it or bringing it up. Named after Andrea’s sister, who loves Brie cheese, this tantalizing sandwich showcases marinated grilled chicken topped with fried Brie, roasted red peppers and pear chutney on a Kaiser bun. Served with their homemade honey mustard dipping sauce, the combination of flavors is absolutely exquisite, and from the first bite, when the warm Brie oozes out, you will be in sandwich heaven!

Don’t Forget To Leave Room For Dessert! I definitely have to recommend the Sticky Toffee Pudding. “My mother’s recipe from England, this is a secret recipe that no one knows except me,” says Andrea. This moist English cake is served in a toffee pecan sauce alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It literally melts in your mouth as the sweet buttery sauce electrifies your taste buds!

Special Dates Michael’s will be open the night before Thanksgiving and the day after for a delicious Brunch. They also will be putting together a wonderful New Year’s Eve Dinner and Brunch on New Years Day you won’t want to miss.
