Happy Mother's Day from TBNL "All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her." — George Washington As we celebrate Mother's Day on Sunday, May 13th, we honor the women who brought us into the world, who shaped us, nurtured us, taught us and showed us what unconditional love is truly all about. Our moms are definitely one of the most important people in our lives, she is simultaneously our biggest fan and our harshest critic. Her demands can sometimes be unattainable but they are meant to make us a better person. Moms are that little voice inside our heads that remind us to be polite to others, to bring an umbrella, to eat breakfast and to iron your t-shirts because you never know who you'll meet that day. Moms are the ones we all run to when we are sick (or at least the majority of us do) even if we're adults and have kids of our own. There's nothing like the comforting arms and soothing words of a mother. Her love and care make us automatically feel better, no matter what. Nobody will ever spoil us, love us and take better care of us than our mothers. It remains a lifelong commitment. Even

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

after a child is grown, graduated and employed, mom is still mom, and moms will always worry. And when the world is harsh, when life pokes us in the eye and laughs at us, it is often our first instinct to seek comfort in a mother's love. Oh, and don't even get me started with our mom's cooking skills…they always cook the best meals! I don't know how they do it! You've heard it before, or you've probably said it yourself; "Nobody cooks better than my mom," or "My mom makes/does it better," or "I have the best mom in the world." I personally know, I HAVE THE BEST MOM IN THE WORLD AND SHE COOKS THE BEST FOOD EVER (I SWEAR!). She drives me crazy at times, but she's always there when I need her… always. I remember back in 2010, I got kidney stones and a bad kidney infection, and I called my mom to leer her know… boy, I had no idea that she was going to run to the airport and immediately get on a plane to come see me (she lived in Venezuela back then) and she spend every single day by my side. Most recently, my husband and I bought our first home together, and my mom to this day asks me "What do you need?" and even though my answer is always "Nothing, mom, don't worry," she

always shows up to our home with things I really needed, but didn't even think about it. A clean set of sheets, bottled water, laundry detergent, plastic silverware to use while we unpack everything from all the boxes we have laying around the new place… I couldn't imagine where I would be without her. And, in the same words of George Washington; everything I am, everything I have accomplished, all my experiences, all my success, all my happiness… I owe to my amazing mother (and dad, up there in heaven, I love you and miss you dearly.) I love you Mom! From the bottom of my heart, thank you, for all you have done and continue to do for all of our family. So for Mother's Day, the entire team of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles has a few special wishes for all the moms out there — any age, any stage of life, and with any prefix or modifier in front of the word mother. We hope you are surrounded by loved ones today. If they can't make it home, we hope they at least call. Flowers would be lovely. If they decide to take you out to eat, go ahead and let them pay, even if that goes against your maternal instinct. Happy Mother's Day!

Autism Therapy - Coming To Carrollwood Parenting a child with behavioral issues isn’t easy. Feelings of frustration and helplessness are very common. If you are experiencing problem behavior from your child help is coming to Carrollwood beginning in May. BCOTB (Behavioral Consulting of Tampa Bay) has been a fixture in Tampa Bay since 2003 as a provider of ABA Therapy (Applied Behavior Analysis). This May, BCOTB will be opening another clinic in Carrollwood located in the Grand Plaza Office Park. BCOTB addresses behavioral issues with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADD, ADHD, feeding aversions, toilet training issues, compliance issues, sensory processing disorders and so much more. BCOTB believes that early intervention (seeing children as young as 18 months old) is key to developing both vital language and communicative skills.

These are all behaviors which are targeted for reduction in the Autism Spectrum Disorder population resulting in significant positive outcomes. Speech/Language Pathology (SLP) program at BCOTB helps children develop the skills needed for successful communication, interaction, and feeding. Tiny Bites is Small on Size, Big on Taste By Deborah Bostock-Kelley Marc Tauchnitz and his girlfriend Neyda “Tita” Ramirez had a discussion for years about opening a bakery. They didn’t like the concept of waste - a typical bakery item was made, put into a display case until it was sold or after a period of time, disposed of. In May 2017, the couple decided to create an entirely original idea. Utilizing her artistic skills as a cake decorator and bakery owner in Venezuela and his business acumen in bakery products distribution and sales and as a bakery owner, they would combine their talents to open a bakery where the desserts are prepared fresh-to-order as the customers watch. These would be small delicious single-serve gourmet dessert tapas that can be enjoyed without feeling guilty. In June 2017, they created their first prototype and began actively looking for a space to build out. Call it fate or serendipity, but an error on the lease in a location they were going to build-out in South Tampa halted its signing. Fifteen hours later, a friend’s phone call about a cupcake shop closing in Carrollwood, move-in ready, changed the course of the business’s history. With the lease signed in November, Tiny Bites opened their doors in their Carrollwood location in the Regency shopping complex on January 17th, 2018. Tiny Bites follows a completely original concept. The work that goes into producing a beautiful dessert is not hidden in the back kitchen. Customers order from the menu and get to watch their dessert being

10

MAY 2018

Owner Marc Tauchnitz freshly prepared, see how the ingredients combine to create their made-to-order delicious treat in a few bite serving. As everything is custom made, there’s no need for a dessert display case. A menu and video at the register showcases the different type of treats available. Customers can choose from a graham tart shell, a sweet tart shell, a chocolate tart shell, and a gluten-free chocolate tart shell. They then have the difficult task of determining what goodness goes inside. “We currently have 40 different combinations, with another 15-20

still to be developed,” Marc said. “A customer can order three different desserts and have three different experiences and they don’t have to feel like they busted their diet and the next stop should be the gym.” And these gourmet goodies won’t break the bank either. No matter what combination the customer picks, the cost is $2 for a single, $5.00 for a 3-pack, $9.50 for a 6-pack, $18 for 12-pack, $26 for an 18-pack and $34 for 24-pack. Perfect for a quick snack to a special event like wedding, graduation, anniversary or birthday party, the choices are as varied as the

shop’s customers. A perfect example was Katie Young, a customer who saw the sign and stopped in to buy a dessert for her husband’s birthday and left with a 6-pack. “He really loves key lime pie and we always have leftover

dessert, so this sounded like a good option. We like to try different things. The price point is awesome. I think the whole concept of tiny bites is great.” Tiny Bites features dessert like a rich cheesecake compliment with Blueberry, Lemon, Strawberry, Raspberry, Pineapple, Coconut, or Chocolate Ganache filling, Bites filled with Cookies N Cream, Crème Brulee, Choco Lovers, S’Mores, and Key Lime. Dulce de Leche, Sriracha Mango, Boston Cream, Guava, Maple Bacon, Nutella, Caramel Mochaccino, among others are waiting to tantalize the taste buds. Mouthwatering macaroons, iced-toorder cupcakes, cake pops, and cannolis filled to order prove the importance of quality ingredients and unparalleled flavor. Tiny Bites also offers premade cake pops, brownies, eclairs, cannolis and macaroons, in limited supply to ensure freshness. To compliment their desserts, Tiny Bites serves an assortment of coffees made to order in their eating area. Customers Carrie Rose and Anita Durand stopped in to investigate the new shop and were happily surprised at the sweet shop’s contents. “This is really good,” said Carrie, enjoying a guava tiny bite. “You can indulge in a few flavors without feeling guilty.” Anita agreed that the treat was

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

delicious and both made plans to return and try out new flavors. In the future, they plan to do flavors of the week. “We have more flavor concepts than we can produce,” he said. While Tita’s favorite dessert creation is the tart Key Lime with meringue, Marc opts for the rich and creaminess of the Crème Brule. Long term, Marc and Tita hope to franchise their concept, so people all over the country can enjoy their own bites of deliciousness called Tiny Bites. “Tiny Bites is our baby. To look at someone and see that they get satisfaction and happiness out of something we created is our favorite thing. When somebody walks up and It’s really satisfying to give them an experience that they enjoyed guilt-free… well, as guiltfree as you can be.” During May, Tiny Bites features a buy one, get one offer to introduce the community to the tiny dessert tapas shop. In addition to tiny desserts, Tiny Bites also makes to order full-size cakes. Tiny Bites is open Sunday through Thursday 11am-8pm Saturday and Sunday 11am – 9pm and is located at 14398 N. Dale Mabry Hwy Tampa, FL 33618. To learn more, call 813/968-6800 or visit Tiny Bites at tinybitesdesserts.com or Facebook Tiny Bites Desserts.

Caring for your Trees for the 2018 Hurricane Season - ALLPRO Tree and Landscaping Inc By: Tom Bostock Hurricanes are some of the most destructive forces on earth, as many Florida homeowners can attest to. Wind damage to homes and property can run into the millions of dollars. The 2018 hurricane season, according to tbo.com, will be another active year. The CSU Department of Atmospheric Science Tropical Meteorology Project’s forecast was just released Thursday. The report should serve as “a call to action” to all Florida homeowners; “70 days during which a named storm will be present, 30 hurricane days and seven major hurricane days. Median seasons see about 60 named storm days, 21 hurricane days and four major hurricane days. University of Colorado predicts “14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes,

14

MAY 2018

packing winds of at least 111 mph!” The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane wind scale paints an informative picture of potential damage to your trees from a hurricane, particularly improperly pruned trees. Using a rating system of 1 – 5, it warns that, at 74 to 95 mph, a category 1 hurricane can cause damage. “Large branches of trees will snap, and shallowly rooted trees may be toppled,” possibly causing “extensive damage to power lines” creating outages that can last “a few to several days.” Downed trees can block roads, delaying the response time for emergency crews. Snapped branches can become lethal projectiles. The time to prepare is now. When you take the steps that you need to make your home secure, don’t forget one important element that is often overlooked and can cause damage to your home, your trees. The solution is

not the removal of trees but taking proper preventative care of them. According to certified arborist and owner of ALLPRO Tree and Landscape Inc, Pete Spiridis, a lot was learned from the damage that was caused to and by neighborhood trees, during the 2017 hurricane season. He said that “more of the trees that failed were improperly pruned trees.” Proper pruning not only improves your trees’ overall health, it ensures

that your family will be able to enjoy the shade of their favorite trees for many years to come. Pete encourages you to call him at either (727-409-3315 or 813-2449234) or visit the website at www.myallpro.com to make your appointment for a free, no obligation inspection of your trees. Arboreal diseases, detected early, can be controlled and cured. Unpruned or improperly pruned trees are more

susceptible to disease than properly maintained ones. ALLPRO not only diagnoses and crafts unique landscaping solutions for your grounds and trees, but also uncovers any underlying causes that may be contributing to your tree/landscape issues. A full-service tree and landscaping service, ALLPRO provides tree trimming, tree removal, tree stump grinding, landscape design and installation as well as yard clean up and all landscaping services. As Pete explains on his website, “Trees in urban areas of Tampa Bay endure especially brutal stimuli. Some trees do not have the genetic predisposition to deal with these forces.” At ALLPRO, the arborists “custom-tailor solutions that promote

the health of your unique trees” If you are wondering if ALLPRO lives up to its reputation of providing “the elite service that you deserve,” as their website pledges, why don’t we just ask the experts? National online home service guru, Angie’s List, was impressed enough to present ALLPRO with their “Super Service Award.” The Better Business Bureau, who analyzes and rates companies, according to both the quality of the service they provide, and the complaints received about them, awarded ALLPRO Tree and Landscaping Inc. its highest rating, an A+!!! So many of their satisfied customers are also happy to confirm the excellence of the service that they

received from ALLPRO. If word of mouth advertising is the best form of advertising, David K. is one of their best advertisers. According to David, “the service

from ALLPRO was phenomenal. They were very responsive to the initial inquiry, highly competitive for the work that needed to be completed and they were extremely professional when completing the work. We are extremely pleased with ALLPRO.” Roger M. agreed as well, noting that he had used ALLPRO to remove several trees for a pool. “Job well done and will use them again.“ Susan Y. said “I would highly recommend ALLPRO Tree and Landscaping.” Julie K. was also in agreement when she said that she “can’t say enough good things about them.” Visit their website at www.myallpro.com to read more of these positive testimonials. With hurricane season just around the corner, while you are preparing your home, don’t forget your trees. Dead branches and overhanging limbs represent potential hazards. The folks at ALLPRO are ready to help. Just call (727-4093315 or 813-244-9234) and don’t forget your free, no obligation inspection.

Bleakley Bavol & Denman – New Name; Same Exceptional Legal Service

Carrollwood and surrounding area residents do not have to travel far to get excellent legal representation; Bleakley Bavol & Denman is your local full service “AV” rated law firm (highest possible rating on Martindale Hubbell’s lawyer rating system) and is ready to help you, your family, and/or your business, no matter what your situation may be. Bleakley Bavol & Denman, formerly known as The Bleakley Bavol Law Firm, recently revealed its new name, reflecting J. Ronald Denman as a named partner of the firm. Ron joined the firm in 2014 bringing a statewide practice representing contractors, manufacturers, carriers, individuals and families in commercial matters, construction disputes, employment, product, trucking, and premises liability matters. It did not take long for main partners Robert Bleakley and Chuck Bavol to take notice. “Chuck and I knew back in 2014 when Ron joined our

18

MAY 2018

firm that we had just gained a very talented litigator,” says Robert. “Ron’s dedication and the incredible effort and enthusiasm he brings to the table for the firm’s clients has far exceeded our expectations. This name change recognizes Ron’s significant contributions to the firm and the outstanding results he has achieved for our clients. Ron is a talented attorney whose national litigation experience allows him to handle the most complex legal issues.” Since joining the firm, Ron accepted the challenge of litigating some of the firm’s most complex commercial cases for many of its larger business clients. However, many of the most challenging (and rewarding) matters involve litigating to help elder citizens and their family members, who have suffered from fraud and exploitation in guardianship, trust, and probate matters. In July 2017, Ron, along with partners Chuck Bavol and Grant Kindrick,

J. Ronald Denman obtained a record $16.4M verdict after a two-week federal jury trial in a guardianship matter, leading to an increasingly national reputation as a champion for the rights of the victim of the system. The newly renamed Bleakley Bavol & Denman will continue offering the same trusted legal solutions, built over the past 18 years, in the areas of commercial, professional, employer, construction, and tort litigation, business and corporate transactions, estate and succession planning, and guardianship and probate matters. The firm, established in 2000, is known for

applying its “big firm” legal experience while offering the personalized benefits of a boutique law firm, and is home to more than 15 attorneys well-equipped to meet your legal needs. Florida Hospital Carrollwood Begins Emergency Room Expansion

Florida Hospital Carrollwood, 7171 North Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa, FL, welcomed construction crews again. Hospital leaders held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday, April 19th, at 12:00 p.m., on the hospital campus, to mark the $17.5 million dollar expansion of the hospital’s Emergency Department.

22

MAY 2018

The emergency department expansion includes 15 new private treatment rooms, doubling the number of people who can receive health care services in an emergency at Florida Hospital Carrollwood, as well as state-of-the-art technology, pediatric ambient rooms and a pediatric waiting area.

The project budget includes a $2.5 million donation from community leader and philanthropist Dr. Kiran C. Patel, who pledged $5 million dollars to the hospital in 2017 split between the ER expansion and a new state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab that opened last fall.

such a generous gift from Dr. Patel and we are excited to deliver emergency care services, with the best clinical teams and the most advanced medical equipment, to our community.” This is the latest of several projects for Florida Hospital Carrollwood. The Surgical Tower features 11 state-of-the-art surgical suites, pre-admission testing area, a leading-edge interventional cardiac catherization lab, two endoscopy suites, and an expanded and renovated Pharmacy, as well as space for future expansion. The Florida Hospital Carrollwood Emergency Room expansion is expected to be complete in early 2019. The ER will remain open throughout the construction process.

“Mary Jo’s” Continued from page 1 experience while developing friendships and a lifelong appreciation of the arts. “When the arts enter a child’s world, magic happens,” says Owner & Artistic Director, Mary Jo Scanio. “I started dancing when I was four years old, and then continued on to become a Dance Major in college. I was dancing professionally; however, I found that I loved teaching. Having the opportunity to pass the arts along to children became, and still is, my passion.” Music, Instruments and Voice: Classes and private lessons are offered in voice and music for ages five to adult. Private instrumental instruction classes are available in Piano, Guitar and Saxophone. Vocal Intensity is a performance show choir that holds auditions each year for students excelling in voice and wanting performance opportunities. Vocal Intensity performs throughout the year at various venues, events and festivals throughout the community. This year the Academy will be adding a choral troupe for elementary age children. The students in MJPAA’s newest class, Music Together®, might not be singing yet, but the instruction they’re receiving is key in developing language, speech and reading skills. Music Together® consists of fun, interactive, developmentally appropriate, early childhood music classes, carefully designed for infants to five year olds. Moms, dads and caregivers are able to join the child for these sessions to learn fun musical exercises that can easily be shared at home. Acting & Theater: Classes are

“Village” Continued from page 1 he move to Carrollwood Village and he said that there were newer more interesting neighborhoods. When I was driving home from meeting him, I noticed that our community was beginning to show many signs of age. I was a new board member at the time and suggested to the board that we begin looking at updating and renovating our community.” Steve says that board members were immediately on board. “The board was very cooperative and understood the vision from the beginning. Bill West and Dick Woltmann were instrumental facilitators to accomplish every goal.” With the help of Walker Branding the Village board sent a survey to residents asking what they would like their community to be. “Hundreds responded, and everyone mentioned how much they loved Carrollwood Village,” said Steve. According to the survey responses, the number one concern for Carrollwood Village residents was traffic. “Many residents said they were tired of too many crashes and hearing ambulances in the neighborhood. When you come home, you want to feel like you’re entering a Village of peace and tranquility. We knew that calming traffic was critical.” The second most important thing on residents’ lists was having a walkable community. Steve says that new lighting installed by TECO has helped them reach that goal. “You need good lighting to be able to walk and feel safe. TECO was fantastic. We are one of the first communities in Hillsborough County to have new LED lighting.” Additionally, the committee replaced old dilapidated signs with new modern ones and was instrumental in getting miles of roads repaved and sidewalks repaired. “As each step has been accomplished, the residents have been wonderful. Their buy-in has been fabulous and many have started renovating their own properties. I talked to a realtor friend recently and he said the

property values for Carrollwood Village have increased tremendously in the past 15 months.” There are even more renovations and updates planned for the community of 3500 homes including a new 48-acre county park that should be complete within the next year. Steve says residents also asked for more events and activities and improved communications which the board will continue to work on. “There is always something new and fresh to keep you relevant. If you live in an area that is beautiful, and you are proud of it, you’ll care for it as if it is priceless. We want to leave a legacy for future generations to enjoy.” Steve says that many people from the city government helped Carrollwood Village along the way including County Commissioner Ken Hagen, County Transportation Program Manager Bob Campbell and County Traffic Engineer Mike Flick and the support of the Highway Patrol and the Hillsborough County Sherriff’s Office. On May 12 Carrollwood Village will be honored at the 15th Annual Neighborhoods Recognition Awards Luncheon as this year’s recipient of the “Neighborhood Improvement” Award. This award is given annually to a neighborhood or individual that demonstrates their dedication and talent to their community. The prestigious honor recognizes the best of the best within Hillsborough County. In choosing the winner, several things were considered, including the quality and sustainability of a project and leadership and character of the individual or neighborhood.
