New Tampa Lifestyles

Welcome To New Tampa Lifestyles out in the New Tampa Area – which I absolutely love! Jared, who is more like a brother than a cousin, is actually my business partner in our next magazine expansion to the South Tampa area, which we aim to debut next month! An aspect of our magazine that we take extra special time with is our ability to spotlight local businesses in a way that others can’t. Through the use of business features, we tell the stories of local businesses to the community in a “word-of-mouth fashion.” We feel that if small business owners were just able to tell their stories to the entire area, they would have a lot more customers! We don’t do simple advertorials, where an advertiser can pay to write their own article about how great they are. Instead, we send out one of our writers to do a full interview with each local business and highlight the very best that business has to offer so that you, the reader, can make an informed decision about spending money with them or not. We like to get the community

Over the past 20 years, my family has published some of the highest quality, community-specific magazines in the bay area; each tailored and distributed to their own unique area. Every community has it’s own story to tell, and because of this, we don’t publish one giant magazine reaching all the areas of our distribution with the same content. From an advertising standpoint, the Tampa Bay area is huge and it just wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense for a mom and pop sandwich shop here in New Tampa to advertise in something far outside their target area or market. It would be a complete waste of money, considering most small businesses do the vast majority of their business in a 5-mile radius of their location. While my family and I do have five other magazines, which are mailed to Carrollwood, Odessa/Lutz/Land O’ Lakes, Trinity, Westchase and Eastlake, only a handful of businesses cross advertise into multiple zones because their businesses serve multiple areas across the bay. With the addition of the New Tampa Lifestyles magazine, in total, our monthly magazines will be mailed to more than 110,000 mailboxes! We understand that you may already have an HOA or other type of publication that you receive in your

mailbox. That’s great, and we aren’t here to replace anything you already receive. As a New Tampa resident, you simply have more options now. I trust you will understand and feel the difference between what we provide the community and what other publications distribute, but I still want to take a moment to explain in better detail what makes us who we are. First and foremost, you will never find any type of negative news in our magazine. Some refer to this as “hard news” and we strongly believe it has no place in a community-oriented magazine, especially when the content is close to two weeks old, if not older, by the time the magazine lands in your mailbox. It’s 2015 and with the internet and social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter you can get all the gloom and doom your heart desires in real time, literally up to the second if you’re so inclined. Not to mention, I’m sure you, as a reader, could care less about what my opinion as an editor is on a news subject you’ve already heard about. On the other hand, in New Tampa Lifestyles you will receive plenty of community-specific news and local information, not only about New Tampa, but nearby areas as well, because even though New Tampa offers plenty of entertainment, there is plenty to do within driving distance and local neighboring areas. My wife Alexis and I live on the New Tampa/Wesley Chapel border and split much of our time frequenting both areas. Although I was originally raised in Tarpon Springs, much of my youth consisted of spending time in Hunter’s Green with my cousins Jake and Jared and hanging

excited about shopping local, because the local economy is what makes our community thrive. My family and I have a passion for small business that started back for me when I was in elementary school. Since I could remember my father took me to work with him on days school wasn’t in session. I shadowed him on appointments and got to listen to business owner’s stories first hand. Even from a very young age, their stories inspired me and I knew one day I wanted to do exactly what my dad did. In fact, when I was in elementary school I remember grabbing a stack of my dad’s business cards and penciling in my name next to his, then handing them out to classmates. Over eight years ago I started working for my dad and two years ago my wife and I started our own publication in Carrollwood. Now we are here in New Tampa because New Tampa isn’t a city, it’s a special community and our goal is to bring the community together and turn it into one big neighborhood. Welcome to New Tampa Lifestyles!

Keeping Dollars in the Local Economy Our main focus at New Tampa Lifestyles is to bring the community something useful and informative while getting people excited about “buying local and shopping small!” When you shop small business you’re not helping a CEO buy a third vacation home. You are helping a little girl get dance lessons, a little boy get his team jersey, a mom or dad put food on the table. A “mom and pop” business understands their customers are their shareholders and it’s those customers they strive to make happy. In today’s rough economy, small local businesses are closing their doors on a daily basis, while many big corporate businesses still have the investors and financial backing to pull through. There is nothing wrong with national companies by any means, but by spending our money in locally owned businesses we can help our local economy to flourish instead of decline. When we spend money locally,

we contribute to the wellbeing of the entire community. Local businesses build strong vibrant towns, linking neighbors in a web of economic and social relationships. Local ownership ensures that important decisions are made by people who live within the community and thus, will feel the impact of each decision they make directly. Many local businesses recycle excess revenue by giving back to the community in which they live and work; enriching the area and creating an even better place to live and love. Locally owned and operated businesses also create jobs and sometimes pay even better than the “big guys.” Competition is not a bad thing. A marketplace of tens of thousands of

small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and above all, low prices. For example, there are hundreds of restaurants within any given city, some of which operate right next to each other. This is necessary in a thriving economy. Can you imagine if there was only one type of each business in each town? It would be a monopoly and the price of a

monopolized product would be astronomical! Entrepreneurship is what fuels America’s economic innovation and prosperity and serves as a key means for families to move out of a low paying job and into the middle and upper classes. By spending money locally, we are putting money directly back into the community; therefore supporting your family, your neighbors and your friends.

Forbidden Chronicles of a Roman Centurion (Available in August)- An archaeological dig under the streets of London uncovers a two thousand year-old letter written by a Roman centurion who had occasion to travel briefly with the apostle Paul. The letter’s contents offer a strong indication that the New Testament is a forgery promulgated by the Roman Catholic Church to serve its own ends. A team of scholars, headed up by a devout Christian and an avowed atheist, track the journey of both Paul and Roman Legion XX to assess the validity of the letter. Cricket Cottage Publishing is proud to announce the release of John Chaplick’s, “The Rivergrass Legacy” a mystery thriller based in the rivergrass area near the Florida Everglades. Our Bostonian blue blood, Grant Abbot Lonnsdale III is a professional auditor sent to do a routine audit on a local business and finds himself caught between a vicious Colombian drug cartel and the fishery owners who refuse to acknowledge his findings. While he struggles to reconcile his New England mindset with the rural southern culture he has been thrust into, he is torn by mistakes he made years ago when he rejected Sarah Jane Jankovic, his true love from the slums of South Boston. “The Rivergrass Legacy” weaves an intricate tapestry of mystery and romance that challenges Grant’s aristocratic family values and changes his life forever. John Chaplick is well versed in the art of big business and forensic accounting. Mr. Chaplick holds several advanced degrees and certifications in business and draws on the experiences

of his clients and his own experiences throughout the many years to flesh out the exciting stories he writes. Now You Have a New Opportunity to Help Save Lives! Believing Tampa Foundation is a nonprofit organization that benefits clients who attend Believing Recovery Center, an activity-based exercise rehabilitation center in Tampa. They specialize in the recovery of those with Spinal Cord Injuries and other neurological impairments such as Stroke, Parkinson's Disease or Multiple Sclerosis. Believing Recovery Center, the first of its kind in the Tampa Bay area, offers a specific and dynamic program based on the concept of Neuromotor Recovery. These intense exercises bring many health benefits for the person with a neurological disorder. Using standing equipment and over ground walking help to increase bone density, improve circulation, and avoid muscular atrophy. The Functional Electrical Stimulation, also used during the therapy, stimulates the central nervous system. It allows muscle contraction, improves blood flow, and builds strength as well. Other exercises improve core strength, which allows more independence in daily life. Since insurance companies do not cover the specialized long-term

Those who make a tax deductible donation will help to fund a Therapy Scholarship Program that would enable the individual to participate in a therapy program geared towards recovery. Success Story! Largest Ice & Sports Complex in the Southeastern US Breaks Ground in Wesley Chapel and Announces Florida Hospital As Major Partner Florida’s largest ice rink facility and sports complex officially broke ground off Interstate 75 at the State Road 56 interchange in Wesley Chapel on February 24. The 150,000-square-foot sports facility will include four full-sized rinks, including one Olympic-sized hockey rink. In addition to the four ice pads, including a removable pad that can double as a multi-purpose floor for basketball and even graduations, the $20-million dollar facility will also be home to a sports-themed family restaurant. Developer Gordie Zimmermann of ZMitch, LLC who unveiled the plan last year for Pasco’s Tourist Development Council, says the facility will open its doors to the community this year. He also says, once completed this fall, it will be the largest ice sports facility in the southeastern USA. “The development of hockey and ice sports has leaped to the next level in Florida. In addition to the success of the Tampa Bay Lightning,

our partners at Z Mitch saw an opportunity to help fill a void. Limited ice availability throughout the region has stalled future growth and now we have an opportunity to provide a world class program where our youth can develop to the highest levels without leaving the state to fulfill their dreams,” said Zimmermann, Managing Partner Z Mitch LLC. Zimmermann, who used to be the General Manager of the Brandon ice facility, is excited to announce Florida Hospital is a partner in the ice and sports complex. Florida Hospital will be a major sponsor of the facility and will provide educational programs on sports performance and injury prevention. In addition, Florida Hospital will provide athletic training, sports performance programs in the facility and much more. “Florida Hospital is committed to supporting our community in Wesley Chapel and throughout Tampa Bay. The ice and sports complex is a natural fit for us because of

our dedication to wellness and our sports medicine and athletic performance programs,” said Denyse BalesChubb, President and CEO of Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel.

Florida Hospital is also the presenting sponsor of the 2014-2015 and 2015-16 Tampa Bay Lightning seasons, as well as the team’s official health and wellness partner and the

official health care provider of the Tampa Bay Storm. The two organizations will work together on creating new programs to be hosted at the new facility, which will have a huge impact on the growth of youth and adult hockey. “As an organization, the Tampa Bay Lightning is committed to growing awareness of, and participation in, our great sport at every level,” said Jay Feaster, Executive Director of Community Hockey Development. “Having another facility with multiple sheets of ice in our market will enable more people to play hockey, and will allow us to increase on-ice programming through our Lightning Made brand. We look forward to working with the ice complex in growing the game of hockey across the Tampa Bay region.” The two-story complex will not only feature hockey and figure skating, but will also host curling and other winter sports. One of the rinks would be located in the 20,000square-foot multi-purpose space that could be converted for indoor sports, such as tennis, basketball, volleyball and arena football. It could also host large corporate meetings and even

high school graduations. The facility expects to host more than 1.5 million people per year, with an estimated 40% of those coming from outside the Tampa Bay area. Developers expect the ice complex to bring more than 50 jobs to the area. The facility is also expected to drive business, especially for nearby hotels, hosting regional and national tournaments. Bringing the beach to you, Ciccio Cali, a coastal style restaurant located in Tampa Palms, brings a little taste of the west coast to your local neighborhood. Ciccio Cali has been a year-in, year-out local favorite here in New Tampa for quite some time now thanks to their delicious “Cali” inspired flavors and unique menu variety. Harnessing the feeling of being free, Ciccio Cali provides a relaxing laid-back atmosphere, where guests can come to enjoy a fabulous meal or refreshing cocktail. Beginning its journey in New York City over 25 years ago with founder James Lanza, Ciccio Restaurant Group, which owns restaurants across the Bay, is named after Lanza’s father, Frank (Ciccio) Lanza. Co-owner of the New Tampa location, Robert Garofano, has been with Ciccio for 14 years and strives to bring the area some of the very best in coastal cuisine. Channeling the California mindset of healthy, clean living into the thing they love the most – their food, Ciccio Cali features a unique menu of fabulous options, all of which are made using the freshest ingredients and most flavorful seasonings. The fact that they also have gluten and dairy free options is a nice bonus as well! They offer a variety of selections for every preference and lifestyle, and one thing is for sure, if you like good food – and who doesn’t? – you will love Ciccio Cali. Whether it be an online review or a local dining poll, Ciccio Cali always sits near the very top of the list. On our previous visit my wife and I went with a group of friends – all of who raved about the food! Comments across the table ranged from “absolutely delicious,” “unlike anything I have ever had before,” and “an explosion of flavor” – it was obvious that everyone enjoyed their meal as much as I did. The fresh “bowl culture” bowls are a big hit in our community, especially the three Ahi Tuna bowls on the menu, which include my personal favorite – the BIG TUNA bowl, consisting of a generous portion of sesame seared rare Ahi Tuna, soy beans, broccoli, cilantro and crisp lettuce and drizzled with what I can only describe as addicting wasabi aioli. My wife and I both could eat this particular bowl everyday for the rest of our lives and never get tired of it, not only for the burst of flavor, but the fact that it’s very healthy with a perfect balance of protein and healthy carbohydrates from the veggies. Accompanying this dish

you have a choice of either rice (yellow, sticky or brown), farro (a high protein grain), Asian noodles or spaghetti squash; I always choose the brown rice – it’s really good! If you love Ahi Tuna, the HOT & CRUNCHY TUNA bowl and the POKI are two more great choices, both packed with generous portions of seared rare Ahi Tuna over your choice of grain. During our last visit to Ciccio Cali I ordered the HOT & CRUNCHY TUNA bowl (pictured in this article) for the first time. The added heat from the siracha aioli and spice from the tempura battered onions that top off the bowl are a perfectly executed complement to one other. In addition to unique and flavorful bowls, their menu also has a selection of pizzas, salads and pasta dishes, including a special section called Cali Fit, for those who are watching their waistline; although everything on the menu is pretty healthy. Wraps are another huge hit at Ciccio Cali, such as their Cali Steak, with grilled steak, lettuce, black beans, corn, salsa, sour cream, guacamole and cheddar cheese and their Southwest, comprised with your choice of a combination of grilled and blackened chicken or grilled steak, as well as onions, sweet peppers, mushrooms, jalapeno jack cheese and yellow rice. They also offer some great stir-fry selections; my favorite is the coconut curry – chicken breast, stir-fry veggies, mushrooms coconut and curry. The flavors of this dish are absolutely amazing and the mixture of veggies provides a freshness that is masterfully brought to life by the yummy curry sauce. Diner Alicia writes, “Easily my favorite restaurant! We eat here weekly – and sometimes twice a week because the Tuesday $2 menu is so great. The food is spectacular. Seriously, I’ve been eating there for six months and have never had a bad meal. Everything is always fresh and each dish is full of flavor. Servers know their menu and have tasted everything, so they can give you a real, genuine opinion. Again, we go weekly and – the food is amazing.” Ciccio Cali is located in Tampa Palms at 17004 Palm Pointe Dr. in Tampa. They are open Mon. – Thurs., 11 a.m. – 9:30 p.m.; 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. on Fri.; Sat. & Sun. Brunch 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.; Sat. Dinner 3 p.m. – 10 p.m.; Sun. Dinner 3 p.m. – 9 p.m. For more information please call (813) 975-1222 or visit www.cicciorestaurantgroup.com.

Paw Print Hearts is a Beacon of Hope for Local Dogs and Cats By Marcy Sanford Since May 2014, Paw Print Hearts has saved more than 300 dogs and 80 cats from being euthanized. Gigi Gauthier founded Paw Print Hearts after volunteering at the Hillsborough County Animal Shelter (HCAS), now the Pet Resource Center. She says, “While I was volunteering at HCAS, I saw many young and healthy animals being killed because there was no space left for them. After some research, I realized that there were some states where the animal shelters had space and had people who wanted to adopt dogs and cats.” Now Gigi receives phone calls from shelter volunteers when there is a dog or cat that is scheduled to be euthanized. After the call, she and the rest of the Paw Print Hearts’ volunteers spring into action to help save the animal. Gigi says that they have sent dogs and cats to Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Connecticut, but have found a shelter in Pennsylvania that truly is a life savior for Florida’s orphaned dogs and cats. “The director at the shelter is

originally from Lakeland, Florida, and he is able to find homes for all the pets we send him,” says Gigi. “The challenge is getting the animals there.” Gigi says that Paw Print Hearts relies on volunteers to make the 32-hour round trip to Pennsylva-

Since founding PawPrint Hearts Animal Rescue in May 2014, Gigi Gauthier has helped save the lives of over 300 dogs and 80 cats from being euthanized. By finding them new loving homes, these dogs are given a second chance at life and the opportunity to find a forever home! nia with a load full of furry cargo. Gigi adds, “About 2 or 3 times a month, we rent a van and one of our volunteers will drive the dogs and cats to Pennsylvania. We can usually get 25 dogs in one van with 2 cats sitting up front with the driver.”

In addition to transporting lucky rescues to a new life up north, Paw Print Hearts also finds home for dogs and cats locally and helps to rehabilitate dogs or cats that the shelter has deemed unadoptable. Gigi says, “We are not going to turn an animal away

because the shelter says they have health or behavioral issues. Most health issues are easily fixed and we have wonderful veterinarians who help us out. Many times behavior issues are due to the fact that the animal has been taken away from the only home it has ever know and stuck in a crate. They are scared and not sure what is happening to them. Usually, with a little work, their true, loving personality comes out.” Paw Print Hearts counts on its volunteers to foster the animals, or in some cases boards them at local facilities. Gigi estimates that it costs approximately $200 per dog to rescue them from death but she thinks each one is worth it. “We want to be able

to help as many dogs as possible and it has been wonderful that the donations we’ve received to date have helped us rescue as many as we have,” says Gigi. “Any donation helps and every dollar of the donation goes to helping the animals.” She adds, “My mission is to rescue. My dream is that someday I won’t have to.” Donations can be made to their PayPal account:

The Tampa Kids Market Inspiring Young Entrepreneurs to Explore Business and Commerce The Tampa Kids Market gives kids ages 8–17 the opportunity to learn commerce in an open market setting. Kids’ are creative, energetic, and many of them are ready to start their own businesses before fear of failure ever has the chance to quell their entrepreneurial spirit. Recently, I wrote a business feature for RN & Associates for the East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles, a sister publication to New Tampa Lifestyles. The thing that is intriguing about RN & Associates is that these two Financial Advisors, Philip Nelson and Ram Ramcharran, focus on teaching the children and young adults of wealthy clients how to manage their inherited wealth (we should all be so fortunate, I know!), but more than that, they encourage them to create their own wealth. With families of their own, they feel that kids can learn important business concepts early. I enjoyed a story Ram shared of

his 9-year-old son planning a lemonade stand and puzzling over finding “a price point that will be acceptable to the general public.” Kids don’t have to be born rich to learn these concepts though, and right here in Tampa Bay, we have the Tampa Kids Market, where young minds are figuring out price points, signage, inventory costs and much more! The Tampa Kids Market was created by a couple of “mompreneurs” who realized that there are many talented, young “kidpreneurs” in the Tampa Bay area who would benefit by having a place where they could sell their wares and learn to manage their own small businesses. Tampa Bay moms and business partners Andrea Bowe and Regina Hord are the owners of FIT4MOM Tampa Bay (a Mommy & Me fitness franchise) who started the Tampa Kids Market, which they also manage. The Tampa Kids Market provides a place where kids ages 8 to 17 can create, sell and learn to manage their small business in a

farmers’ market setting. It features both kid vendors and businesses that sell family-related products and/or provide children’s services, as well as community resources and free activities for kids. The Tampa Kids Market rotates at several of the Tampa Bay Markets

locations in Tampa Bay, including the North Tampa Market in Carrollwood, the Seminole Heights Sunday Morning Market and the Fresh Market at Hyde Park Village. Please visit TampaKidsMarket.com and click on the “Upcoming Events” tab to view the calendar.

Once you’ve completed the application process (details at TampaKidsMarket.com), you are only confirmed for a market when Tampa Kids Market sends you an approval email and you have returned your Participation Agreement. Then, Kid Vendors are selected by a rotation of first-time kid vendors to allow as many children to participate as possible. Children of market vendors/exhibitors are not given priority and will be put in the rotation as well if they require a separate market stall from their parents. If you would like your child to participate in every market, you do have the option to reserve and pay for an adult handmade vendor space for a reduced fee of $35 per market. Kid Vendors who cancel with less than 3 business days notice will be subject to a $25 cancellation fee.

Interested in Being a Kid Vendor? Rules do apply and there are a couple of important things to keep in mind if you’d like to be a vendor. Kid Vendors must be between ages 8–17 and can offer a variety of products and services. There is NO FEE for Kid Vendors to participate in the Tampa Kids Market, but they must complete an online application and also have a current Parental/Kid Participation Agreement on file for 2015. The Tampa Kids Market tries not to have

two of the same type products and it does not accept adult vendors who sell food. Kid vendors are allowed to make and sell food products but they must be pre-approved including their full ingredients list. Keeping to the fresh market concept, all food items must be made from scratch and contain no artificial ingredients or dyes – no “boxed” food, kiddos! Creativity is abloom at the Tampa Kids Market and all ideas are encouraged but must be pre-approved. Kids can work together as a school group, a local fundraiser, with friends, siblings, or alone. Some examples of products and services offered by Kid Vendors are: DJ’s/musicians/bands, jewelry, Make and Take crafts, dog treats, baked goods, toys, garden grown vegetables and fruits, costumes, face painting, balloon animals, original art work, fundraisers, jams/jellies, magnets, paper weights, upcycled/repurposed items – really, let your imagination soar!

What You’ll Need If selected as a vendor, kids are required to have their own market setup that includes table, table cloth, maximum of two chairs, a sign that says what they are selling with the price(s) listed, money for change, and a minimum 10-x-8-ft. tent or large outdoor umbrella for shade. Space is limited and more rules apply. See full list and

“Market Day Requirements” at TampaKidsMarket.com. Parents may assist their children when necessary (purchasing supplies, getting organized, using the oven, driving); however, parents are not allowed to make items for the children to sell OR sell their own handmade items at a Kid Vendor booth. Parents who make items to sell must apply as a business. Businesses owned and operated by adults that want to participate as a vendor at the Tampa Kids Market must adhere to the Kids Market guidelines, rules and regulations, which can be found on the website. Sponsorships & Volunteers Needed Become a sponsor or volunteer at Tampa Kids Market. Businesses, churches/non-profit organizations and even families can get involved! If you’d like to help sponsor the Tampa Kids Market, you may email TampaKidsMarket@gmail.com and they will contact you to find out more about how you’d like to get involved and send you a sponsorship proposal or volunteer packet. Sponsors also may give out products, services or provide volunteers at Tampa Kids Market events. (TampaKidsMarket.com)

Small Changes to Your Bedroom Can Be Key to Better Sleep and Better Health

dow frame, you may benefit from adding drapery panels and cornice boxes that cover the gaps. If you’re in the market for new blinds, routless louvers eliminate the tiny holes that traditional blinds have. Another option is to cover the rout holes with cloth tapes, which also allow accent colors to be carried to the wall. Conversely, homeowners who add programmable motorization to their window treatments can open the window coverings in the morn-

ing allowing the sunlight to assist in the waking process. If these tips don’t help you acquire better quality sleep, if may be a good idea to see a doctor to rule out any physical causes of sleeplessness. There’s no disputing that humans need sleep. But with sleeping disorders on the rise, the consequences of our poor sleep patterns range from decreased productivity, stress, drowsy driving and heart conditions. Many people can improve the quantity and quality of their sleep by making some simple changes to their bedrooms. The idea is to create an environment that is conducive to sleep – calm, cool and dark.

COOL: The best sleep environments are cool – somewhere between 65-70°F – so turn down the thermostat by a few degrees in the evening. You’ll improve your sleep and decrease your heating bill. Use window treatments to control the temperature in your rooms. Some treatments have higher R-factors, which means they provide more insulation than window treatments with lower R-factors. Cellular shades are excellent insulators.

Here are some ideas to create the perfect sleep environment:

DARK: Light disrupts sleep. Some light sources you can control. It is relatively easy to turn off inside lights, reposition your alarm clock or turn off the television. Other light sources, like street lamps, moonlight or outdoor lighting, you can only control access. Using window coverings to block light can help you get a good night’s sleep.

CALM: The bedroom should be used for rest and relaxation – a sanctuary. So eliminate all those things that disturb your calm. Eliminate clutter. Vacuum and clean regularly to remove dust and other allergens that can disturb your sleep. Choose a calming color palette such as blues, greens and purples. Add plants like spider plant and peace lily to clean air naturally. Use drapery panels to soften harsh visual edges and dampen sound. Area rugs can be used to absorb sound as well.
