Happy Mother’s Day, May The 4th be with you! May is full of holidays, proclamations, awareness events, and tacos, yes… tacos! Let’s start with Memorial Day. Formally known as Decoration Day, this is a Federal holiday observed yearly on the last Monday of May. This year, Memorial Day falls on May 27th, 2019, and it is a day to commemorate all men and women who have died while serving in the military for the United States of America. Many amazing troop supporters, and local business owners will be offering Memorial Day specials, one-of-a-kind offers, and fantastic discounts on merchandise, products, and services. Make sure to carefully browse this issue of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles, so you can take advantage of those great deals and save big this upcoming Memorial Day. Apart from Memorial day, the month of May houses a few other special days as well. The 2nd Sunday of May we celebrate International Mother’s Day. I would like to personally wish my mother, Berardina Tedeschi, a very Happy Mother’s Day. I couldn’t have asked for a better role model. I love you! To all mother’s, grandmothers, great grandmothers, and foster moms, I wish you a very Happy Mother’s Day! Remember, successful mothers are not the ones that never struggle or get frustrated; they are the ones that never give up, despite the struggles and continue loving unconditionally. Star Wars fans? May the 4th be with you! Star Wars Day, May 4, celebrates George Lucas’ Star Wars. Fans of the media franchise observe it by re-watching the Star Wars movies, wearing costumes, sharing movie quotes and posting funny memes on social media. The date was chosen for the pun on the catchphrase “May The Force Be With You” as “May The Fourth Be With You.” Also in May, many U.S citizens look forward to “Cinco de Mayo,” which is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. You wouldn’t guess it, but Cinco de Mayo is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, but in the United States has evolved into a huge commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, and the Holiday its frequently confused

with “Mexico’s Independence Day,” which takes place on September 16th. Lastly, I want to bring your attention to something of importance that also takes place during the month of May; Lyme Disease Awareness Month. Many states and counties have taken steps to raise awareness regarding Lyme and tick-borne diseases. Declaring May “Lyme Awareness Month,” is one move to help remind people spring is here, ticks are out, prevention and proper education are your best tools to staying healthy. With the spread of the disease to all 50 states, Lyme awareness, education, and early intervention are critical. Even though Lyme disease may not be too common here in Florida, you can still get infected. Take it from someone who is currently battling this debilitating and life-altering condition. I spent several years not knowing what was wrong with me, not understanding why I was feeling so sick and tired all of the time, until I was properly diagnosed by an infectious disease doctor about five months ago. Please be prepared and learn the signs and symptoms of Lyme disease. If you have symptoms such as; high fevers, chills, body aches, weight gain/loss, TMJ, headaches/ migraines, fatigue, muscle and joint aches, arthritis with severe joint pain and swelling, particularly on the knees and other large joints, heart palpitations or an irregular heartbeat, and problems with short-term memory amongst others, please contact your primary physician. Ask him or her, to advise you and refer you to a Lyme Disease specialist near you. Fighting Lyme has been an uphill battle, but with the proper treatment, I am finally feeling like myself again. It’s been tough to open up to everyone about this, but if I can help raise awareness with my own story, then so be it. If your health fails, it can overshadow everything else that’s going on in your life. Take care of yourself, eat a healthy diet, make sleep a priority, find a fitness habit that works for you and don’t get too stressed out. Stress can wreak havoc on your body. Until next time! Carla Selby.

SAT AND ACT IMROVEMENT: SPRING AND SUMMER PREP

Dr. Wayne Adams

“Dr. A, I got a 1200 on the SAT!” my student almost shouted with excitement coming through the door to start the ACT part of our prep classes. “That’s great. Do you realize it is worth about $18,000 in scholarship money at any Florida Public University?” I replied. “Wow! That’s even greater.” “Yes, and now with the ACT let’s see if we can get you another $6,000 with a 100% Bright Futures scholarship,” I said and we began. By the way, it looks like this student has an excellent chance to hit an ACT composite of at

8 MAY 2019

least 28.5 (yes, the ACT Exam rounds up on their composites if they are .5 or higher). The Academic Scholar qualification threshold is a composite of 29 on the ACT. As I often discuss with students, where could they find a job where they could earn $18,000 to $24,000 … tax - free ? I call this, “Dialing for Dollars.” And each of my students and their parents receive a copy of my special report about Negotiating with Colleges, that has saved many between $1,000 and $10,000 a year in college costs. At this time of year, many parents are asking

what they should do about SAT and the ACT Exams. The last SAT Exam in this school year is on Saturday, June 1st, and the last ACT Exam is on Satur-

day, June 8th. During the summer, there is an ACT Exam on Saturday, July 13th, and an ACT Exam on Saturday, August 24th. For seniors, the Bright

Futures program will consider scores from the June 1st and the June 8th exams to qualify for these scholarships for students starting as college freshmen next fall. For juniors soon to become seniors, these exams can give an idea of how they can score, whether that will be in the range for applying to their selected schools next fall, and whether it will qualify them for a Bright Futures scholarship if they stay in Florida. For sophomores soon to become juniors, this is excellent preparation for the PSAT exam next October which is the only national qualifying exam for National Merit Scholar-

ships. Also, this can help prepare for later exams in their junior and possibly senior year. Another very popular option for rising seniors and juniors is to prepare for these exams over the summer. Students can focus more on preparing because they normally do not have all the time pressures that occur during a school year. Classes can be scheduled around vacations and other requirements, and are easier to change at the last minute if needed. River Cruising - A Spectacular Way To Enjoy Europe River cruising is a relaxing

and hassle-free way to unpack once, settle into your ship life and sail away to multiple destinations. In many ways river cruising is the way countries were meant to be seen because you can immerse yourself in authentic experiences in some of the most beautiful regions of the world. River cruises have fewer passengers and as a result tend to be more regionally inspired than ocean cruises. The vessels can procure a delightful sampling of local produce, cheese, seafood and meat for onboard meals. Sommeliers may offer wine tastings, in addition to tasting dinners or events with local wines. AmaWaterways sets itself apart through its food and wine. It is the only major

10 MAY 2019

river cruise line to be a member of the prestigious culinary society, La Chaine des Rotis-seurs. Menus are crafted with each destination in mind, offering a few dishes traditional to the region alongside mainstream options like sea bass fillet and tuna tartare. During a stopover in Germany, guests ate wienerschnitzel and sauerkraut; while sailing to Amsterdam, the chef prepared herring. Wine, too, is selected based on the region. Each night guests are presented with a different red and white. When you step off the ship, most river cruise lines offer at least one free shore excursion in each city. Led by local guides, you can enjoy walking tours or visits to castles, markets and museums, all of which offer an authentic

sampling of what each city has to offer from an insider’s perspective. Discover Holland during tulip season, stroll through Europe’s famous Christmas markets, experience France’s majestic wine region, or embark on a wildlife safari cruise through Africa. Historically, rivers were the best way to travel between

communities, and this is where the true enchantment of river cruising lies. Rivers are the heartbeat of the region, weaving through the major cities and the scenic rural areas with picturesque small towns, castles and farmland between them. This is an experience unlike any other, and it’s something you can truly savor on a river cruise.

What’s on your river cruising bucket list? We encourage you to consider, if not already on your list, Europe during the winter holiday season. Amazing sights, smells, atmosphere, history and culture pervades across Europe in the December weeks leading up to Christmas. And what better way to experience it than on a river ship? Unpack once, and wake up in the heart of a different city within or bordering four different countries. Christmas market cruises sailing along Europe’s Danube rivers have flourished in popularity over the past few years. The allure is obvious. Medieval towns outfitted with decorations and lights, charming booths lining the streets and vendors selling specialty foods and warm mugs of Glühwein. Exploring the Christmas markets aboard

a river cruise allows travelers to visit several cities, along with enjoying the convenience of not having to repack for each stop. There’s nothing in the world quite like the holiday season in Europe, and if you join us there from late November through early December this year, it’s easy to see why: There are wooden chalets in 13th-century towns, snowcapped cathedrals, seasonal cookies and cakes in display windows (better still: in your mouth), and of course, all the hot mulled wine you can drink. Put all of it together, and the towns practically twinkle with fairy-tale festiveness. Ready to book? Tampa Bay Lightning - The Season That Got Away... Again.

By Tom Bostock When Sir Fredrick Arthur Stanley (Lord Stanley of Preston) first donated a trophy cup to the championship hockey team of Canada in 1892, little did he realize how coveted his cup would become in the professional ice hockey world. Over the years, storied teams like the Montreal Canadians (23), Toronto Maple Leaf ’s (13) and Detroit Redwings (11), to name a few of the winning NHL teams, have won the prized cup multiple times. (thoughtco. com). It is the ultimate achievement in professional hockey. The fledgling hockey team that was awarded to Lightning

they were, joining only 2 other teams in the history of the NHL with 60 wins, enjoying the rarefied air of only the 197677 Montreal Canadians and the 1995-96 Detroit Redwings. A recent 5 - 2 win over the Senators, with Yanni Goure’s 2 goal, 1 assist performance, helped clinched their 60th win in grand fashion. All eyes were on those final games and then the Lightning’s Stanley Cup run. Their 61st and 62nd win, a drubbing of the Bruins, ended founders, Phil Esposito, Henry their regular season, fueling fan Lee Paul and Mel Lowell during expectations of greater things the league expansion in 1991, to come. which began play in 1992 and Injuries impact team was assigned to the Norris performance and the Division of the Campbell Lightning were no exception. conference, appeared to pose According to ESPN.com, no apparent threat to the from information provided established Northern teams in by rotowire.com, Lightning the National Hockey League. stalwart defenseman Victor All of that changed in 2004 Hedman would not be active when Lightning Captain, again until the playoffs. Not Lightning seemingly put an wishing to repeat last year’s loss exclamation point on how real to the Washington Capitals in

the Eastern Conference finals, it seemed like a good idea at the time to have a well-rested Hedman. The Tampa Bay Lightning looked forward to the playoffs with a wealth of offensive talent and high-scoring lines to choose from. A fan favorite, Russian born Nikita Kucherov had taken the Lightning by storm, beginning to challenge ever consistent team captain, Steven Stamkos, for supremacy on the ice. He seemed destined for a greatness in the playoffs that was not to be. According to all the sports pundits and talking heads, the Lightning were poised to go deep into the playoffs; they were both fans’ and sports book favorites to win this year’s Stanley Cup. To win, the Lightning needed to overcome some old habits. Diana C. Nearhos, in a Tampa Bay Times article, reminded fans that the Lightning had to come from behind in each of its final four games. Twice they were able to complete the comeback for a win in those final regular season games. The playoffs proved something else entirely! Having closed out the regular season with a final

drubbing of the Bruins 6 -3, to reach 62 wins, the Lightning breathed the rarified air of only one other 62-win team in the entire history of the NHL, the 1995-1996 Detroit Redwings, but apparently were too preoccupied reading their own press clippings to pay attention to what happened to Detroit in the playoffs; they did not win the Stanley Cup that year. The fact that the Lightning spotted the Bruins 2 goals before they scored their first one in their final game of the season should have been a reminder to the Lightning of what could and did happen in the playoffs, just as it happened to Detroit. An unstoppable, impregnable juggernaut of offense, defense and goal tending took to the ice that first playoff game, pounding the other, ill prepared team

into utter submission. Didn’t you just love the final battle in the seventh and deciding game? Oh, that’s right, there was no seventh, or sixth or even fifth game, for that matter. And surprisingly enough, the unstoppable offensive juggernaut wore the colors of the lowly Bluejackets, led by former Lightning coach, John Tortorella, a man on a mission. In an interview, after the complete annihilation of the favorite Lightning in a 4 -game sweep, John revealed his secret to the wins; he told his team to focus on one game at time. The Lightning, on the other hand, didn’t seem to focus on much of anything. Out shot, outscored and out of position in many instances, they skated their way to hockey immortality; the first team to win the President’s Trophy for scoring the most points in

the regular season and then being swept in the first round of the playoffs, 6-3, 5-1, 3-1, and 7-3! Close only counts in horseshoes and this Lightning team didn’t even get a whiff of Lord Stanley’s cup with their inept on-ice play – or lack thereof. With Lightning efforts that probably belonged in the Hall of Shame, as the Zamboni cleaned and resurfaced the ice after the final game, I hope that they added some detergent sufficient to remove all traces and stench of these playoffs whose odors will probably linger with Lightning players until they start anew with Spring training in September. What will next year’s team be like? Will it have the same promise of unbeatable offense and stifling defense that characterized this year’s team. Will we again have our

hopes crushed by lackluster, indifferent play in the playoffs or will that championship be realized once again like its 2004 predecessor? Where there is life, there is hope and we diehard Lighting fans are no different. If you will play like the Lightning that we have come to know and love, we, your loyal fans will still be the Thunder!

“DOGISM” Continued from page 1 “Dogism is a Dog heaven on earth,” says local guide and longtime customer, Kim L. “They have everything your dog could want! Agility, training, tricks, daycare, clean bathing stations and so much more! It is so much fun for your dogs! The staff is truly amazing and they all have the same ethics that I do for dog training and sitting. The retail shop has amazing new items all the time, ranging from toys to training materials at great prices.” Dogism is owned and operated by Renee and Jason Russell who themselves are owned and inspired by two Vizslas, Gideon and Bailey, and a Moluccan Cockatoo named Nara. Renee is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer and AKC evaluator, while Jason has a degree in psychology from the University of Delaware. Both have experience in training for more than 12 years. The Vizslas, Gideon and Bailey, have extensive experience competing in dog competitions. But even though Renee and Jason enjoyed the experience of competitive dog training, they found it to be very demanding and time-consuming. As a result, Dogism was inspired to be a place where everyone could benefit from the experience and fun of training, without the pressure of competition. “The primary reason for all of this was just to have all the training and agility at a fun level,” explains Renee, “I like dogs to have fun and to do things without the pressure of competition and training.” Renee and Jason share their mission to, “Have a place for people to have fun with their dogs.” With more than 7 types of classes available for dogs and owners alike, it is all the fun without the pressure. Dogism is not just a facility, it is a way of life. It is a real community of dog lovers who come to make sure their dogs are not only well-trained, but also happy. Teresa S. elucidates, “Dawn, our miniature poodle, loves coming to Dogism for training class, to visit her friends and to run around on the padded floor in the training/play area! Renee has been a wonderful trainer and has been able to offer many alternative methods until we find what works for Dawn! She is a very special lady! If you are looking for the best training class in town, stop by and meet Renee at Dogism!” Training Programs

for new or soon to be puppy owners. It covers everything you need to know to care for your first pup: potty training, crate training, mouthing, chewing, appropriate toys, and more! Later, there is the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy (socialization, training, activity, responsibility) certification. This class follows the American Kennel Club program for starting puppies and owners off on the right paw. It teaches basic training and what it means to be a responsible puppy owner. For the adult dogs or older pups, there is the “Good Dog Manners” class. Kaitlyn M. describes, “Our 3 year old dog Maya (husky) loved the Good Manners class that Dogism offers. The trainers were so friendly and knowledgeable. Maya honestly looked forward to the class every week.” To go a step further, the Advanced Manners class will prepare the dog and owner to earn AKC Canine Good Citizen title. This is when you can really show off your skills! It is all fun and games in the “Tricks class.” This class is modeled after the “Do More With Your Dog program.” Learn various tricks just for fun, or work towards the different levels of titles offered by DMWYD. With all these classes and more, you will build a loving relationship with your pet that you will treasure. “Dogism helped us resolve our dog’s anxiety problem,” says Alex S. “Our pup was attacked by a neighborhood dog and suffered from nightmares. Eventually, she developed uncontrollable barking at all hours. We tried a number of ways to resolve this issue on our own before consulting with a professional trainer. We followed Renee’s advice, and our dog now sleeps comfortable at night. Our pup has her confidence back! We couldn’t be more grateful.” Agility Courses “Around here, we call it Fungility,” barks Bailey. “And Fungibility is for everyone!”

Where you are new to the sport or champions in the ring, everyone’s welcome! There is a new, fun course set-up every class to challenge you and your dog. Melody U. and her dog Jessie had a blast during their visit and fungibility class. “My 9 1/2 year old Jessie went for her first Fungibility class recently, as she is still very agile at her age, and she enjoyed and loved every moment of the class! We both did!” says Melody. “Renee was careful to adjust the course to suit her age, and watching Jessie flash that big beautiful smile of hers made my day! We will return again and again! The classes are also indoors which helps during our hot Florida Summers. Dogism is a great spot! I highly recommend it.” DIY Doggie Baths Play hard, bathe harder! After all the learning, playing, training and fun, walk over the DIY doggie bathing area for some good clean fun. Literally. Dogism offers two 50.25”L x 21.25”W x 20”D raised grooming tubs to save you from back pain! It is comfortably large for big dogs (along with a step-up ramp), but for the

petite ones there is a shelf for them to sit on. The bathing station has everything you need for a cleaner, happier pup. Choose from a full selection of shampoo that best fits your dog’s needs. The station is complete with towels and a fur dryer! When you are finished, pick a snazzy bandana, or a cute bow to compliment how doggone cute your best pal is! Jennifer A. says, “The DIY bathing stations are fantastic and always clean! My husband and I bathed and groomed our dogs after a visit to the local dog park. So much easier to bath and groom your dog there than at home. Best part is you get to leave the MESS and go home with a beautiful clean dog.” Torri C. concurs, “Stopped in yesterday with my Labrador for the DIY bath!! It was a wonderful experience! The staff was very friendly and helpful and they had everything i needed to give my girl a nice bath... Plus they kept the excess hair BONUS We’ll be back.” Awesome Re-tail Toys! Toys! And more Toys! There is also a unique selection of everything you need

to have a fully fashionable, outfitted dog in today’s society. Plus, there is no shortage of treats for dogs to either eat or bury. If you can’t find what you are looking for, please ask the Dogism team. If they don’t carry it, they will do a special order for it. And no bones about it, most importantly, Dogism will not carry any product they would not use on or give to their own dogs. Doggy Daycare Gideon says, “If you get too lonely when there is nobody home, come and hang-out with me! We are never left alone, and there is ample opportunity to make friends.” “I cannot unharness our dog Rudy, fast enough from the seatbelt when we arrive at Dogism. Saying Rudy loves daycare there is an understatement,” says Alice T. “We know he always has a great time there because he is quite tired at the end of the day. Rudy also completed the puppy classes with Renee and it was a wonderful experience.” Gideon continues, “Not only do we

get to socialize with one another, but we also receive that basic training we crave so much! Trained staff supervises us and give each of us individualized attention. There is also playtime, rest time, and of course, treat time. There is a limit to the number of us dogs accepted into daycare so that we all receive the attention we desire. We all must undergo a behavioral evaluation before entering daycare to ensure we will get along with the group.” The Dogism retail store is open Monday - Friday 10am-7pm Saturday 11am-4pm DIY Dog Bathing is open during retail hours. Dogism Daycare hours are 7 a.m.–7 p.m. on Mon. – Fri. All dogs over 6 months must be spayed or neutered. Dogs should be fully vaccinated and reliably housebroken before starting day care. “Budget Blinds” Continued from page 1 After four successful years in the Tampa market, owner Rob Emmerson recently acquired the East Lake territory for Budget Blinds. “I’m excited to be here to serve our customers in the North Pinellas and Central Tampa area,” he said. Having been an owner of Budget Blinds in other locations, Rob is excited to bring his experience and the Budget Blind quality to customers in the East Lake area. “I have thousands of jobs under my belt,” he explained. He’s ready to bring this experience and expertise to future clients. The Budget Blinds Warranty Has you Covered!

22 MAY 2019

Why choose Budget Blinds? “We’re the biggest in the industry,” he explained. “Budget Blinds is so much more than a blind resource. If it goes in, on or around a window, we have it,” he said. Budget Blinds products meet the needs of the customer. Budget Blinds offers standard and custom blinds, fabrics to coordinate with your selection, decorative accessories and more! Their warranty is second to none. “We have the best warranty in the industry,” Rob said. Their “five year, no questions asked” warranty really does mean what it says! Even if your dog chews up the plantation shutter you purchased from Budget Blinds, then yes, they will replace it. If you need a replacement due to damage or malfunction

within five years of purchase, you’re covered! Budget Blinds is the only company in the industry offering such a warranty. Customer Service is a priority to Rob and his staff. When meeting with the customer, he reminds himself that he’s there to help the client determine what they’re looking for. He asks many questions. “I want to know if they’re looking for light control, privacy, décor, etc,” he said. Once the desire of the customer is determined, Rob and his consultants go to work. “We solve whatever problem they have with any window,” he said. Once a selection has been made, it takes just 2 to 3 weeks for basic items to be delivered and installed. While items like shutters might take longer, he explained they keep

in contact with clients to let them know when to expect delivery on purchases. “We do everything we can to meet their needs!” he said of his clients. With Budget Blinds, customers never have to leave the comfort of their home! “We come to your house, help select the product you want, and we take care of the installation, too.” A common mistake many make is thinking they can install new window coverings themselves. “It can be more complicated than people realize,” he said of the process. All installers are employees of Budget Blinds and have passed full background checks and are insured as well. Once the installation is complete, they even take away the old blinds! No hauling old, dirty blinds and outdated

window treatments to the curb yourself! Budget Blinds takes cares of all of that for you. Finding a Solution to Meet Your Needs What’s trending now? As Florida residents know, it’s all about the sun. According to Rob, roller and solar shades are extremely popular right now. But don’t be quick to jump on the bandwagon of what’s popular! Rob can help guide you when considering what will work best for you and the location of your window. Are you looking for privacy? Be sure to determine if the roller or solar shades you are considering will meet your expectations. According to Rob, “If you see through them one way during the day, then you will be able to see through

them from the other direction at night.” That, he explained, is what many people don’t take into consideration when selecting blinds or shades. What prompted Rob to take on Budget Blinds as a business? “I had a lifelong passion for window fashion,” he joked! Laughing aside, Rob explained his desire to own his own business and serve customers with something they wanted for themselves led him to take the plunge. “I was a customer of Budget Blinds for two of my prior homes,” he explained. He was very impressed with Budget Blinds when it came to calling them on their warranty claim. “We had a string break on a blind and I was just going to throw it out. My wife explained they had a warranty and I told her ‘Honey, it’s a string. They’re

not going to replace it.’” Surprise! They did replace it, making Rob another satisfied customer. Later, he heard an ad on the radio soliciting Budget Blinds managers and owners. Since Rob was already convinced of the Budget Blinds commitment to customer service, he made the call to inquire about the opportunity. The rest, he said, is history. Customer reviews are posted on their website. Here are just a few from the many satisfied customers. The blinds have been installed and they look great. The staff was very complimentary to your installation guys of how quickly and professionally they worked. Thank you for a job well done and hopefully, we can do business again in the

TECH TALK With Bob The Computer Guy - By Bob Dalles Today’s Topic: I Think I’ve Been Scammed! Cybercriminals are using successful techniques in their quest to separate you from your money. I have been receiving an onslaught of calls lately from folks saying, “I think I’ve been scammed! What do I do now?” My friend Kathryn fell victim to a scammer just last week. She was minding her own business surfing the web when a message popped-up on her screen. This “official looking” pop-up message instructed her to call a specific phone number because she had “a malware infection that needed immediate attention.” If that wasn’t bad enough, she also found herself locked out of her computer. It was frozen. No mouse. No keyboard. She felt her only option was to call the phone number on the screen.

24 MAY 2019

Which she did. By the time those scammers finished with her they had not only taken control of her computer, but also convinced her that they could restore it to working order once she paid them $499.00. Which she did. These scammers called it a service charge. I call it extortion. Now mind you, Kathryn is a bright, intelligent woman who would typically never get taken for a ride by such crooks. But these cybercriminals are extremely good at what they do. They constantly hone their skills conning trusting people who think they’re in trouble. Why do they do it? Scamming people in this fashion has proven to be extremely profitable. Few get caught. Most are offshore. Your best defense is internet safety awareness and

developing safer online habits. So, what do you do if you get a popup on your screen that tells you to call a phone number or click on a link? Take a picture of your screen with your cell phone. Be sure any phone number or website address is readable. Do not click on any links. Do not call any phone numbers. Have your system examined for malware by a technology professional. Do not conduct any transactions involving private or sensitive information until you know your system is squeaky clean. What do you do if you receive a phone call from a stranger telling you that you have a malware infection or something else is wrong with your computer? Immediately hang up. Do not engage them in conversation. If

they call back, hang up again or don’t even answer. What do you do if you have already downloaded their software to give them control of your computer? Immediately turn your computer off. If you leave it on, they can monitor your activity, steal your data, and even ransom it. Leave your computer off until a professional looks over your system. What do you do if you have given them your credit card number? Immediately call your card issuer and have your card and the transaction cancelled. Don’t wait to get your credit card statement. Call your bank and deal with this as soon as it happens. Some banks may require you to file a police report.

This story does have a happy ending. I was able to purge the malware from Kathryn’s computer and give it a clean bill of health. She called her bank. They flagged the transaction for their fraud division; cancelled Kathryn’s credit card; and had a new card in the mail to her the very next day. If Kathryn had done nothing, she would have been scammed out of nearly 500-bucks. But even worse, those crooks would still have control of her computer. They could spy on her or ransom her computer whenever they felt like it. Kathryn changed from being a passive victim to a vigilant internet user by recognizing and taking immediate control of her situation. These crooks can be intimidating. They’re relentless. They prey on a person’s fear of, and inexperience with, technology. Every time I speak with a victim of this scam, they always say the same thing. “I can’t believe I fell for it.” Sometimes their embarrassment of being

scammed prohibits them from reaching out for help. Kathryn felt less violated when SHE took control of the situation. Be safer not sorrier. You do not have to be a casualty of these high-tech outlaws. If you are not sure your system is safe, please have it looked over by a Professionally Certified Computer Technician. If you need a certified professional, call us now at 727-534-4000. We’ve been helping folks restore their peace of mind, and sanity, with their technology for decades. Have a tech question? Email it to TechTalk-TBNL@ BobTheComputerGuy.NET. Questions will be selected by the popularity of a topic and answered in this column. If you have a more urgent need or have a unique situation you may schedule an appointment with one of my Professionally Certified Technicians by calling 727-534-4000. The YMCA Brings “US” Together In many cases here in America, the zip code you’re born into may have the ability to determine your future. Sometimes these divisions exist mere miles from each other, in zip codes that are just one number apart. However, the YMCA of the Suncoast believes everyone deserves the same opportunities, no matter who you are or where you’re from. The Y is committed to helping bridge these gaps nationwide. Here in the Tampa Bay area, the Y aims to build equity and close opportunity gaps through a number of school age programs and so much more. “Our goal is

to strengthen our community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility,” said G. Scott Goyer, YMCA of the Suncoast President and CEO. “We’re proud to offer school age programs, memberships to children in Foster Care and teen leadership programs to help ensure everyone can thrive, regardless of who they are or where they’re from.” Did you know that the North Pinellas YMCA is just a few miles away and offers you the opportunity to swim, play tennis, take group exercise, partake in family activities, attend summer camp, and so

much more! The Y also has before and after care at many local elementary schools. You and your family can truly thrive at
