Life Truly Goes to the Dogs at Dogism! By: Joy Bergman

“Rrruff! Ruff, Ruff!” is all you hear for the seventieth time today. You shake your head in despair, as you drive your four-month-old chihuahua, Poppy, to the vet. First, he barked at you for breakfast. Then the mail lady. Now, the driver in front of you. And it just goes on and on. Not to mention, Poppy isn’t potty trained, and he doesn’t seem to care, either. Day after day, you find yourself in the same frustrating situation as your untrained See “Dogism” on page 20

Affordable Summertime Happiness As a diehard bolts fan, I want to take this opportunity to say congratulations to the Tampa Bay Lightning for advancing onto the next round of the playoff series. It is looking like a three-peat, and I couldn’t be more proud of this incredible team. Summer is almost here, and so is the 90+ degree weather! Despite the heat, the humidity, and those afternoon showers, Tampa Bay is full of unique activities you can enjoy throughout the hot days of Summer. Here’s a list of some of my favorite activities you and your family can enjoy this Summer 2022 in Tampa Bay and surrounding areas without breaking the bank. 1. Beach it Up! - What better way to spend a weekend than soaking up the sun, playing some volleyball, hunting for seashells, enjoying a cold beverage, and exploring the 700+ miles of coastline that Florida has to offer! 2. Make a Splash! Take advantage of community pools, City of Tampa Parks and Recreation pools (free with REC card), splash pads, and places like the YMCA Tampa pools. 3. Go biking around your neighborhood, join a cycling club, and meet some new friends! Biking is a fun activity you can do with your whole family. If you’re looking to join a local group check out the Tampa Bay Cycling Meetup, One Love Cycling Club, and Psyclepaths, amongst others. 4. kayaking/paddleboarding - Some of the best spots include the Hillsborough River, Little Manatee River, Myakka River, Withlacoochee, Rainbow Rivers, Suwannee River, Chassahowitzka River, Silver Springs, Caladesi Island, and Weedon Island Preserve. 5. Try a new restaurant! Explore a new neighborhood where you don’t normally eat at. Become inspired and get ideas from our local advertisers; take advantage of their Summer Specials, offers, and coupons advertised on all editions of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles. 6. Visit Pier 60 in Clearwater for

a beautiful sunset festival night. Sunsets at Pier 60 on Clearwater Beach operate year-round from two hours before, until two hours after sunset, weather permitting. The nightly sunset celebration features artisans, street performers, and world-famous Pier 60 sunsets. Current hours are 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. 7. Take a tour of Tampa Bay via water taxi, Pirate Water Taxi, or any other water vessel! Choose a day to explore and see our beautiful city of Tampa Bay from a new point of view. 8. Attend a free concert at Curtis Hixon Park during their Rock The Park series. Rock the Park is a free monthly music series showcasing Central Florida’s musical talents of all genres. Join us on the FIRST THURSDAY of every month at 6:30 pm at Curtis Hixon Park in Downtown Tampa, FL. 9. The Ringling Museum of Art Admission is FREE on MONDAYS! One of the most photo-worthy museums around is the Ringling, located in Sarasota. This 66-acre estate was the legacy of John and Mable Ringling. The Ringling Museum of Art is The State Art Museum of Florida and has a remarkable collection of artwork, statues, circus history, and so much more. Be prepared to spend a whole day here, it’s worth it! 10. On a trip budget? Don’t worry, we live where others vacation! You don’t need to get on a plane to enjoy a luxurious experience in Paradise. Visit resortpass.com today, it makes exploring all the local resorts easy by selling you day passes to pools, spas, and access to all the amenities at some of the best hotels and resorts in town. Tech Talk with Bob: STOP: Before Repairing Your PC

Imagine this. The computer you bought from that big box store seven months ago no longer works. No problem, it’s under warranty. You call the manufacturer for a return authorization. You pack and ship your computer to them. Two months later, you finally get it back. It quickly boots up. However, your desktop doesn’t look the same. Then, you realize some programs are missing, you can’t print, and most importantly, all your pictures, videos, music, and other data is nowhere to be found. Your computer works, but your personal stuff is gone. You call the manufacturer to ask about your data. Suddenly, you get this sinking-feeling as you learn that the only obligation they have is to repair or replace your computer to the way it was the first time you took it out of the box. The manufacturer has no liability when it comes to the stuff you add. You learn the hard way that your missing programs, data, and more are your problem. People find themselves unprepared and in this predicament every day. Hopefully, after reading this, you won’t. Some people view computers no differently than coffee makers or other appliances. Electric coffee

8 JUNE 2022

makers use hardware and software to function. However, your coffee maker’s software is not as sophisticated as your computer’s software. Like the coffee maker, people typically do not differentiate between the hardware and software aspects of a computer system. The truth is, where the software in your coffee maker never changes, the software in your computer constantly changes. Especially as you add and delete music, pictures, and other personal data. Your computer’s hard disk drive (HDD) stores all computer software information including your personal and unique information. This happens over time as you add, delete, and otherwise change programs, printers, data, etc. Each change alters the contents of your HDD. When you send your computer to the manufacturer for repair, your HDD may be physically replaced with a new HDD. It can also be logically replaced by having all the information on the HDD erased and then rewritten with the original information the HDD had on it the day you took it out of the box. Ever had the battery in your car replaced? The first thing you realize is the radio preset stations have been wiped out due to the battery being disconnected. The auto repair shop’s responsibility is not to restore your radio presets but to replace your car’s battery with a working one. You’ll just have to reprogram those stations all over again. The same is true of your computer. Important information can be lost during the repair. Personal data, like rare photos, may be impossible to replace. It is always your responsibility to make sure you have what you need to restore the programs and data you have added to your computer since you bought it. But no one ever tells you this until it’s too late! So, how do you minimize your data

loss when you need your computer system repaired? First, make certain all your personal data is backed up. This can be difficult if your computer will not turn on. If your computer will not turn on, there’s a good chance my team can save your HDD data before you send your computer off for repair. Call me at 727-534-4000 to find out. Next, you’ll need the installation disks and/or downloaded files for any software you added to the computer after you bought it. Make sure you have all your product keys so these items can be reinstalled with as little trouble as possible. You’ll also need a list of your email and website usernames and passwords. You will need to reenter these the first time you try to access any secured websites. If you are not sure you have everything you need, and you would like some help sorting it all out, call me. I’ll help you get all your ducks in a row. An hour or two of prevention will save you so much money and, more importantly, grief if you find yourself in a time-crunch to get your computer back up and running the way you had it before sending it off for repair, or experiencing the distress of a malware attack, or the misery from the inevitable HDD crash. Are you certain your computer is safe? You don’t have to do this alone my friend. My team and I are here to keep your computer safer and keep it running. My team repairs computers and secures them, on our bench, onsite in your home or office, and even remotely. We have the best solutions already in place and we’re only a phone call away. Call us anytime at 727-534-4000. We’ve been helping folks restore their peace of mind, and sanity, with their technology for decades. We Keep You Safer In Your Digital World!

Is your home lacking character? Add these simple features to your space for a boost of integrity! You likely want your home to be welcoming, cozy and clean for your friends and when you host family. However, you also want your property to be distinctly your own. If you feel like your home is lacking some character, here are a few easy things you can do to instantly boost your space’s integrity: Add creative fixtures and hardware Small changes can make a big difference when it comes to adding character to your home. Better Homes & Gardens recommends switching out your generic hardware and lighting fixtures for some that match your personal style better. Changing your silver cabinet handles to copper to match your kitchen can be an eye-catching addition. Similarly, a chandelier or large, modern lighting fixture in your dining

or living room can be both the focal point of the room and be functional. Paint the trim or accent wall When was the last time you noticed your trim? This feature of your home is often overlooked, but giving it a fresh coat of paint can do wonders for any room. If the trim is still natural wood, consider painting it a fresh white for a clean look that will outline your walls and any decor. On the other hand, if you want your walls to appear more spacious, you may want to color the trim the same hue as the rest of the room. This is a relatively small project that can be completed in a day but immediately transform your room. Use a ceiling or wall treatment Another creative way to

add some more aesthetic in your home is to opt for unique wall or ceiling treatments. Shiplap and textured wallpaper are great additions to any room — whether it be on an accent wall or encompassing the entire perimeter of the space. However, Freshome also points out that ceiling treatments are a popular way to add some extra integrity to your home.

Instead of a simply white ceiling, try shiplap on top or even a medallion to bring attention to a light feature or certain architectural design. Frame your windows The windows are an interesting feature of your home because they can be viewed from both the inside and out. Instead of having plain drapes

For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

or flimsy curtains, get creative with your window treatment to really make a statement. Curtains and drapes come in a variety of colors, patterns, textures and materials that can add charm to your living spaces and look elegant from the street. Don’t forget the exterior Finally, don’t forget to spruce up the exterior of your home as well. Painting the exterior trim, updating landscaping and adding shutters are all a great way to have your personality shine through and

add curb appeal. By adding some of these extra touches, your property will stand out from the others on the block and guests will always know which home is yours. The outside of your home is one of the first things guests and passers-by see, so it’s important to add extra flare out there as well. Contact Decorating Den Interiors today to begin planning for a home makeover just in time for the new season.

SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: SUMMER PREP CLASSES By Dr. Wayne Adams Wow? Summer break has already started. Before we know it, high schools will be back in session in early August. How time flies, especially over the summer. Upcoming Exams: ACT on Saturday July 16th and Saturday, September 10th; SAT on September 3rd and October 2nd; and PSAT on Wednesday October 15th. More and more students prefer to prepare over the summer. Rising seniors want to see if their scores are high enough for desired colleges and universities (and for Bright Futures), rising juniors want to see how they would score plus preparing for the PSAT in mid-October, and many rising sophomores incorporate preparing for these exams as part of their longer term strategy to be admitted to the best university possible and seek to maximize scholarships. Often when I talk with parents, they ask … Question: “How do you keep my student’s attention for your normal three hour class?” Answer: “That is not the problem. As your student will tell you, the problem is that the time goes by so fast.” Question: “How do you motivate students to do their best?” Answer: “When my students quickly see they can rapidly improve, they motivate themselves to see just how well they can do.” Question: “Do you help students aim for a specific score or score range?”

14 JUNE 2022

Answer: “No, because I believe this adds too much pressure and is counterproductive. Instead, I ask them to do their best with the time and priorities they have … and the score will take care of itself. They also learn how to ‘have fun taking the test’, which sounds like words that should never come together but … as they will learn … really do and can greatly help with their mental outlook and test performance.” Question: “What makes the difference in how different students score?” Answer: “For my students, the factors are the academic preparation when they come to me, test-taking skills, special techniques that greatly help on the exam, how well they are guessing on testday, and ‘curve balls’ (those questions you seldom see but, when you do, you either know how to answer them or you are guessing). We have special preparations for these ‘curve balls’.” Question: “Can you help with other areas of college admissions and costs?” Answer: “Yes, and I have for years. This includes writing outstanding college application essays; key information for the ‘Top 25’ colleges and universities, ‘Five More’, and ‘Top 5’ in Florida; locations of very helpful web sites; and my guide Negotiating with Colleges that has helped my families save $1,000 to $10,000 a year in college costs.” Question: “Do you have anything that can help

my student get off to the best start as a freshman in college?” Answer: “Yes, I have written a book about How To Can Survive and Thrive as a Freshman at a Secular University which I give to every family that has proven very helpful in parents and students preparing for the ‘college experience’ and then the student getting off to the best start. If you would like to talk more with me about your student, please give me a call at 727-253-0639 or send an e mail at wwa0811@mykolab. com. Would be great to talk with you further. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve around 200 points on the revised Writing, Reading, and Math SAT superscore; and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to 5 of the “Top 5”, 8 of the “Top 10” and 18 of the “Top 25” universities in the country, and many more schools in Florida. These

schools include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Naval - Air Force - Merchant Marine Service Academies, Penn State, LSU, Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Palm Beach Atlantic, FIU, New College of Florida, Stetson, and Julliard – Manhattan - New England - and Berkley Conservatories of Music. Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. He has also tutored three students who achieved National Merit Scholar Finalist awards. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

“Cleaning Angel” story continued from page 1

also punctual, trustworthy, and most importantly, caring. And now, it’s time to honor one very special and caring angel who helped make it all happen, Steve Insolia. Donna’s late husband Steve helped grow Donna’s Cleaning Angels to the huge success that it is today. Unfortunately, Steve passed away from Covid on Februrary 18th of 2021, leaving a void with Donna. “You never told me how to live the rest of my life without you,” Donna says in Steve’s memory. “I honor you, I miss you, and I love you. My heart aches for your smiling face, and to hear your voice and laughter... He was spontaneous, creative, adventurous, funny, classy, and beautiful, just to name a few of his qualities,” she reminisces. While this past year has been unbelievably hard to bear, Steve’s angelic touch has been with Donna and her angels all the way. Donna continues to honor Steve by providing the best cleaning services possible with her team each and everyday. “Even though I have a broken heart, you will live on through me,” she says. I will be your voice and promise that I will never let anyone forget you...I keep going to make him proud.” Donna InsoliaFerrante was born into a mixed Italian and FrenchCanadian family up in New Hampshire, who were notoriously known for

18 JUNE 2022

being hard workers. Her family’s dedication to their Italian restaurant of over 70 years helped teach her to have a strong work ethic in whatever she does. When Donna moved to Florida in 1991, she started cleaning houses as a side job. During this time, the inspiring entrepreneur was cleaning for an elderly woman on hospice, of whom she became close friends with. Donna soon gifted the older woman a beautiful crystal angel, and her friend then referred to her as her “Cleaning Angel.” And that’s how “Donna’s Cleaning Angels” got its wings! Donna married “the love of her life,” Steve, in 1997, and his great business skills helped her employ 22 angels over time in the company. In addition, Steve lovingly started several other businesses for his wife, including Madam Butterfly Boutique and The Ten Dollar Store. The couple were active in many endeavors, including working at various flea markets and festivals throughout the state. As entrepreneurs with big hearts, Steve and Donna have trained their employees at Donna’s Cleaning Angels to work with the same positive attitude and dedication that they have shown. And as a result of the team’s hard work over the years, the angels have won the trust of their customers for doing “the job right the first time,” both openly and

“A Magical Love Story Forever.” Donna & Steve are married on December 27th, 1997 honestly. In fact, some of Donna’s clients have been using her for over 20 years! Diane Morris of Odessa was particularly pleased by the angels’ work, and wrote, “The girls work in teams, this way they have a lot more energy together. References and insurances provided per request. Her team brings their own supplies,” she said. “Donna herself returns my calls...I’m very pleased with this company, and

understand why they’ve remained in business for so many years in this area. I have referred them to many people.” And many other happy clients agree! “I love the feeling of coming home to a sparkling clean home and Donna’s Cleaning Angels deliver every time!” JoAnne Peters of Palm Harbor rejoiced. As a true businesswoman, Donna enjoys getting to meet her clients while giving them

JUNE 2022 19

“Dogism” story continued from page 1 “best friend” drives you crazy. “I can’t do this anymore!” You scream. Well, here comes the good news – help is available. Many dog owners, especially first-time puppy owners, find out that training a dog isn’t just a “walk in the park.” Luckily, the astounding dog trainers at Dogism, Oldsmar’s premier 7,000 + sq. ft. dog training and retail facility, are here to make your life easier – and even more fun! You might wonder if anyone is capable of helping you with your “hopeless” dog. But it’s more than possible. Take it from fellow puppy owner and Local Guide Robert C. He writes, “Renee and Amy have been very patient working with my young dog and myself to help me develop the best relationship with my rather energetic dog. Renee has to be a ‘dog whisperer’ because when she speaks, the dogs listen.” And this is true. Renee understands the importance of “building that [good] relationship with your dog,” which is why she and her husband Jason opened Dogism in the first place. After spending several years competing in dog competitions with their own personal pups, Renee and Jason decided to create their own fun

20 JUNE 2022

learning environment that wouldn’t be stressful. Now, on any given day, you can find happy dogs of all sizes and breeds ready to learn at Dogism. So, where should you begin? Dogism’s programs will show you just where to go! If you’re thinking of adopting a puppy, or if you’re already the proud owner of a little pup, you’ll want to start with the Puppy Intensive to provide you with the best guidance on potty training, crate handling, and much more. However, if your puppy has already completed the intensive, or is older, check out Dogism’s S.T.A.R.(TER) Puppy program, which follows the AKC’s curriculum and teaches social connection for you and your furry friend. You’ll grow alongside your puppy as you learn how to connect with him or her, and have fun while doing it. After your pup completes this program, he or she can move on to the Good Dog Manners course. This exciting, sixweek course is designed for dogs who are ready to learn good behaviors to apply in everyday life. While this course is as far as many doggies go, feel free to stick around and deepen you and your pet’s education with more advanced programs like the Advanced Manners CGC.

You and your pup can go on to earn the prestigious Canine Good Citizen Certification as well. In fact, Renee and her trainers are certified in the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program, which is a well-respected chapter of the AKC. Dogism focuses on positive reinforcement in training, which means rewarding your dog whenever he or she behaves correctly. So, you’ll need something in hand to motivate your pooch with… like toys and treats! Remember to bring plenty with you to class, as well as “a lot of patience,” a good collar, harness, and leash. And if you’re running low on supplies, check out Dogism’s retail boutique,

which is packed with trusted goodies and accessories. If you’re in the horrific process of losing your best friend, Dogism can help you through it. Whether you need help creating an “end-of-life journey” for your pup, handling tough decisions, or setting up a tribute or memorial, you can count on the caring staff at Dogism to be right there beside you. Additionally, you can also participate in companion-based “grief support,” where you can share your pain and experiences with other dog lovers. Sometimes it’s hard enough just watching your aging golden retriever lie around the house all day.

Renee has a solution to that, too – bring him to “fungility!” These agility classes keep dogs of all

ages and sizes active with new running path courses each time. Did you miss a class? No worries! You

can check the schedule on the website to make sure you attend the right one for you. Stay tuned for new classes like Tricks and Fun Fur noses, as well. In addition, private lessons are available, whether they be onsite or in the comfort of your home. Is it bath time? Bring your doggy in for a wash with Dogism’s comfortable, back-friendly tubs. Renee and her staff know that spending time with your furry best friend should be “fun and easy,” so if you want to create a better relationship with a more obedient pet, then it’s time you head on over to Dogism. Your pup will thank you! :-)
