By Dr. Michael A. Pikos and Staff

Mother’s Delivers Mom’s Classics with Elevated Twist

Braised Skirt Steak Risotto

Slow Braised Skirt Steak served over Traditional Risotto and Mushrooms, topped with Truffle Oil and Shaved Parmesan.

Three years ago, owners and business partners Joel Olinski and Brad Spoor thought they were building a new restaurant Downtown Tampa. He and Brad met regularly to iron out the details at a restaurant in the Publix shopping complex on Linebaugh Avenue and Race Track Road because both lived in Westchase. One day the restaurant owner inquired, “Why don’t you buy this place instead?” Out of the planted seed flourished the scratch kitchen restaurant Mother’s, a fun twist on all mom’s classic recipes that is celebrating its third anniversary in Westchase with a special week-long celebration on September 9-16. Go Gold This September - Help Bring Awareness to Childhood Cancer September is here and I am still in disbelief. A lot of stores have Halloween and Christmas decorations out on display already, can you believe it? Whether time goes by slowly or incredibly fast for you, for those diagnosed with cancer every new day is a gift. Families, caregivers, charities and research groups across the United States observe September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In the U.S. alone. approximately 16,000 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer every year; and 1/4 of them will not survive the disease. A diagnosis turns the lives of the entire family upside down. The objective of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is to put a spotlight on the types of cancer that largely affect children, survivorship issues, and -importantlyto help raise funds for research and family support. No matter how what you can contribute, a little does a lot. You can donate online by visiting the following trusted organizations:

National Pediatric Cancer Foundation: https://nationalpcf.org/ American Childhood Cancer Organization https://www.acco.org Children’s Cancer Research Fund childrenscancer.org. Children’s Cancer Center: http:// childrenscancercenter. org/ All donations to these charities are tax deductible since they have all been designated as a 501(c)(3) organization by the IRS. On these websites you can also learn about each organization, read stories from current patients battling cancer, share your own story, or even start a fundraiser. Another way to show your support during the month of September is by wearing gold all month long in your community. Gold is the national color for childhood cancer awareness. Unlike other cancer awareness ribbons, which focus on a singular type of cancer, the gold ribbon is a symbol for all forms of cancer affecting children and adolescents. You can make a safe Gold Ribbon, gold bracelet, gold earrings, charms, etc. purchase online from

a local Tampa company called Fundraising For A Cause: https://www. fundraisingforacause. com/ A lot of the orders ship the same day if placed by 3:00pm. EST. I would also like to take this opportunity to invite all of you to the 8th Annual Cheval Cares 5k Run/Walk event held by the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation, and presented by Tampa Bay Insurance Partners, The Arndt Family, and JK Cancer Fund, Inc. The Even will be held on Saturday, September 28th at the Cheval Athletic Club and will feature a fundraising 5k through the Cheval neighborhood, followed by a family celebration at the playground and basketball court. Registration fees apply so please visit: https:// secure.qgiv.com/ event/cheval/ for more information and to register for the event. Your registration fee includes an event T-shirt, a spot in the 5k run/ walk, and admission to all the family fun areas. There will be live music, a bounce hose, food trucks, a silent auction and more. I will be attending the Cheval 5k with my family, and I hope to see all of your smiling faces there as well! Caregivers Helping Hand Inc. Gives Baby Shower to Hillsborough County Moms-to-Be on Public Assistance By Deborah Bostock-Kelley Sometimes it takes but a single act of compassion to begin a domino effect that lasts a lifetime. In the 90s, Richedean HillsAckbar was a single mother and was given two baby showers by people wanting to help her in her time of need. She was so impacted by that kindness that she decided to assist other mothers on public assistance. In 2009, the inaugural “Annual Day of Pampering for Moms-To-Be” was birthed and now 10 years later, Richedean and volunteers from the community have touched the lives of 5000 expectant mommies through her nonprofit organization, Caregiver’s Helping Hand, Inc. From 10am to 2pm on Saturday, October 12, the nonprofit is pampering expectant mothers during its “Annual Day of Pampering for Moms-To-Be.” Hosted at New Mt. Zion MB Church and sponsored by Rebein Brothers Trail Lawyers, BJ’S Restaurants, Inc.,

6 SEPTEMBER 2019

The Wellements Family, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Sunshine Health, this special event, open to all Hillsborough County moms-to-be on public assistance, is celebrating a decade providing community baby showers. This year, Richdean expects over 250 women to attend the zoothemed event. The event is also open to siblings with a Kids Zone bounce house and face-painting provided for them. Dads-to-be and Grandmas-to-be are also on the guest list. With horror stories in the news of infant abuse, Richedean provides this resource to help new inexperienced mothers learn now how to prepare for the responsibility of a newborn. As several new mothers don’t have a support network to rely upon and it is easy to become overwhelmed, Richedean brings in community speakers to help train and prepare the young mothers for the stress of having an infant. Richedean also advocates to

leave a violent situation and to not leave a child with someone that could potentially harm the child. She wants to give young mothers a sense of independence. Something that may come easy for others – like balancing a budget – may be difficult for a mother without experience. New mothers dealing with financial hardship don’t necessarily know how to budget for buying diapers, or formula, if not breastfeeding. “They often don’t know how to handle this new responsibility and I actually form a budget so that they can balance it,” she said. “I have someone coming to show them how to make baby food, and someone to show them how to budget their money.” With vendors including Hillsborough County Children’s Board, Healthy Start Coalition, Warriors for Autism, Tampa Family Health Centers, Sunshine Health Plans and Molina Health Care, expectant moms will also enjoy

complimentary food, baby shower cake, gifts and training classes in financial management, couponing, care and child safety for new parents and special classes for the dads sponsored by REACHUP. “The shower will include resources to different agencies that support parents and items new parents may need like book

bags for the Dads filled with items needed for an outing like diapers, wipes, blankets, bottles and change of clothing,” said Richedean. “Mom Care, Reachup Incorporated, and Children’s Board of Hillsborough County have been supporting this event for 10 years and are just a few of the companies supporting us.” Marilyn Westropp, Dr.Tracey Crocker, “The Job Coach” Margaret Debellotte, Dr.Romona Burrowes, and Pastor Laytecia McKinney will provide inspirational speaking for the expectant parents. Pictures and belly painting, as well as massages by Bless These Hands round out the event to ensure expectant moms will receive

a very special day of spoiling. “We are trying to give momsto-be a good start to parenting their newborns by showing a little kindness in their time of need,” she said. “Someone once gave to me. I’m just giving back.” In addition to all the free services and gifts, Richedean herself creates diaper cakes filled with useful baby items which are raffled off for several of the lucky moms-to-be. When asked what the most gratifying comment she’s heard from her guests over the last decade as the event and nonprofit founder, Richedean answered simply. “Thank you.” Caregiver’s Helping Hand,

Inc. accepts gently used and new items for newborns, babies, and toddlers. Items needed include newborn diapers, baby bags, pacifiers, socks, blankets, hats, t-shirts, headbands, rattles, bottles, teething toys, strollers, mobiles, baby wipes, lotion, shampoo, powder, crib sheets, baby swings, baby monitors, and bottle warmers, etc.

Clothes To Kids, Inc…helping students dress for success! With school in full swing, one issue on many kids’ minds is “What am I going to wear?” For many students, what they wear affects their self-esteem and confidence, both of which can have an impact on their ability to achieve academic success. Fortunately, for families in the Tampa Bay area with students eligible for free or reduced-priced lunches, there is a program to which they can turn for their clothing needs. Clothes To Kids, Inc. has a simple mission; to provide new and quality used clothing to low-income or in crisis school-age children, free of charge. Yes, free clothes! With this worry behind them, let the learning begin! How it all began Childhood friends and graduates of Clearwater High School, Jode Frisbie Eye and Marie Bouchard McClung established Clothes To Kids, Inc together. With a desire to help

8 SEPTEMBER 2019

children in need, these ladies began collecting clothing in 2002. Their goal was to provide a store with a positive and cheerful environment where families and children could shop with dignity and respect and receive clothing for school, free of charge. In 2003 the first Clothes To Kids location opened its doors in Dunedin. Growing quickly because of the many donations from both

individuals and businesses, they moved to their current Clearwater location. In 2009, a St. Petersburg location was opened to meet the needs of families in that area. In 2018, the Tampa location opened its doors serving children in Hillsborough County. Since its beginning, Clothes To Kids has provided more than 129,000 wardrobes, which include new and quality used clothing, to children!

October, 2019 marks the 17 year anniversary of this amazing organization. Staying true to core values With the opening of each Clothes To Kids location, the core values of the organization remained intact. Compassion for those they serve and making families feel comfortable and welcome; Respecting those who shop there by maintaining confidentiality

and not question or judge their circumstances; Building selfesteem by providing clothing that makes children feel good about themselves; Serving those children by working hard and giving their very best. Executive Director, Jennifer Jacobs has been with Clothes To Kids, Inc. since 2011. Her inspiration to work with the organization came when she learned about their mission and how it applies to all. Greeting the shoppers, she explained, is her favorite part of her job. “Especially the little ones and the high schoolers who come in and don’t want to be there and then they leave with a bag full of clothes they picked out and love and are smiling from ear to ear!” Jennifer explained that making a difference in the lives of our future generations is what motivates her. How you can help “There’s a very good chance that what someone donates today could very easily be on our store floor for a kid to select and love

the next!” New and quality used clothing are always in demand. Because kids come in all sizes, they collect all sizes of clothing for children in grades PreK4-12th grade. They also distribute more than 80,000 pair of underwear each year! Unopened packages are a current urgent need. They also accept scarfs, earrings, ties, hats, belts, bracelets and necklaces. Of course, cash donations are also welcomed so that they can fulfill their critical needs when a certain category runs low. Jennifer explained that for every dollar donated, .87 cents goes towards the program. They are recognized as a 4-star charity navigator charity, which is the highest rate given to charities. Be sure to watch their website for upcoming events! In October, the Kick One Back event will be held at the Rialto Theater. This event is held to raise awareness and funds. Each year, Clothes To Kids, Inc. distributes more than 15,000 pairs of shoes. A new pair of shoes costs them, on average, $12. Tickets for this event can be purchased on their website. In

April of 2020, their Our Clothes Matter Luncheon-Awkward Years will be held at the St. Pete Coliseum. Individual tickets are $50 and table sponsorships start at $500 for a table of ten. Both adult and youth volunteer opportunities are available! Be a greeter, work as a sorter, mender or restock clerk. Students in grades 9 through 12 can earn service hours which can be used toward Bright Futures scholarships! Volunteer applications can be found online.

SAT AND ACT OUTLOOK FOR THE FALL By Dr. Wayne Adams Upcoming fall exam dates are SAT: August 24, October 6, November 3, and December 1; ACT: September 8, October 27, and December 8. The main PSAT Exam is scheduled for Wednesday, October 16th. Now that school has started and most schedules have settled down, we can all take a long, relaxing breath and think about fall planning. Seniors and their parents are thinking about applying to colleges, the SAT and/or the ACT Exam, FASFA forms, and Bright Futures and other scholarships … on top of all the academics and activities that constantly demand attention. NOTE: Your student’s chances of admission to most top colleges is far higher if you apply for early decision or early admission. Don’t wait for regular application dates because often the percentage of students admitted at that time is half compared to those at early admission! The “gorilla in Florida” is the rock-hard deadline of November 1st from UF. Most other schools are fine with a January 1st application and standard exam scores following soon behind. For those wanting to apply for early option or early decision, most of these probgrams are fine with exam scores coming in late November through December – but make sure to check the dates with your target schools to be absolutely sure. Juniors and Sophomores

10 SEPTEMBER 2019

are simply looking forward to successfully completing their fall term, and doing their best on the PSAT coming in mid-October. Many are already preparing for the full exams, which gives them more time to prepare and experience the exams. On occasion, I have tutored seventh graders for the SAT and ACT, and it is becoming more common for me to start with ninth or tenth graders as well. To meet the eligibility for SAT and/or ACT Scores for Bright Futures Scholarships, students can keep trying until the last exams of the spring semester. Usually, the last SAT is given on the first Saturday in June, and the last ACT on the second Saturday in June. Most of you know that the definition of “success” on these exams that is foundational to our classes is not achieving a certain score. Instead, when one of my students walks out of the exam and looks back on all that has been accomplished, they can simply say, “I have done my very best with the time and the priorities that I had.” In my opinion, half of achieving a significant improvement in score is mental. Shooting for a number or thinking that not doing well on an exam is the “end of the world” adds way to much unnecessary pressure. And every one of my students hear my voice in their head at the beginning of their exam say, “Have fun taking the test.” We often talk about how the exam is their opportunity to show just how well they can do! And

they do. For example, I am as proud of a student who raises their SAT score to an 1150 as I am of a student that raises it to 1530 … so long as they have done their best with the time and the priorities they had. Here’s a recent Email I received from one student: “Hi Dr. Adams. I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate all that you did for me. I could never had done this without you. It makes the difference whether I can go to college or not. I can go.” With the text was a picture of her super-score, which was 1190 that qualified her for the 75% Bright Futures scholarship. She had worked hard and

raised her score from her last test almost 200 points. What a joy for me to have helped on her next step to her best possible future. If You Would Like To Talk More About How I Can Help You, please contact me at 727-253-0639 or at wwa0811@mykolab.com. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve 200 – 350 points on the Writing, Reading, Writing and Essay, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to eight of the top ten universities in the

country, seventeen of the top twenty-five, and many schools in Florida. - and Berkley Conservatories of Music. Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. This year, he also tutored three juniors who scored at the national merit finalist/ semi-finalist levels on the most recent PSAT. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

ALLPRO Tree and Landscaping Inc. Residents of Pinellas, Pasco, and Hillsborough counties have access to one of the country’s premier tree and landscaping service providers in Allpro Tree and Landscaping. Whether you own a residential property or a business, Allpro landscaping and tree experts are at your service. They design impeccable landscaping, trim every type of tree, grind tree stumps, remove stumps, install and remove sod, place rock beds, lay mulch and perform all sorts of other yard-related duties. Allpro is ready to help you during the 2019 Hurricane Season The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane wind scale paints an informative picture of potential damage to your trees from a hurricane, particularly improperly pruned trees. Using a rating system of 1 – 5, it warns that, at 74 to 95 mph, a category 1 hurricane can cause damage. “Large branches of trees will snap, and shallowly rooted trees may be toppled,” possibly causing “extensive damage to power lines” creating outages that can last “a few to several days.” Downed trees can block roads, delaying the response time for emergency crews. Snapped branches can become lethal projectiles. The time to prepare is now. When you take the steps that you need to make your home secure, don’t forget one important element that is often overlooked and can cause damage to

12 SEPTEMBER 2019

your home, your trees. The solution is not the removal of trees but taking proper preventative care of them. According to certified arborist and owner of ALLPRO Tree and Landscape Inc, Pete Spiridis, a lot was learned from the damage that was caused to and by neighborhood trees, during the 2018 hurricane season. He said that “more of the trees that failed were improperly pruned trees.” Proper pruning not only improves your trees’ overall health, it ensures that your family will be able to enjoy the shade of their favorite trees for many years to come. Pete encourages you to call him at either (727-409-3315 or 813-244-9234) or visit the website at www.myallpro. com to make your appointment for a free, no obligation inspection of your trees. Arboreal diseases, detected early,

can be controlled and cured. Unpruned or improperly pruned trees are more susceptible to disease than properly maintained ones. ALLPRO not only diagnoses and crafts unique landscaping solutions for your grounds and trees, but also uncovers any underlying causes that may be contributing to your tree/ landscape issues. A full-service tree and landscaping service, ALLPRO provides tree trimming, tree removal, tree stump grinding, landscape design and installation as well as yard clean up and all landscaping services. As Pete explains on his website, “Trees in urban areas of Tampa Bay endure especially brutal stimuli. Some trees do not have the genetic predisposition to deal with these forces.” At ALLPRO, the arborists “custom-tailor solutions that

promote the health of your unique trees” If you are wondering if ALLPRO lives up to its reputation of providing “the elite service that you deserve,” as their website pledges, why don’t we just ask the experts? National online home service guru, Angie’s List, was impressed enough to present ALLPRO with their “Super Service Award.” The Better Business Bureau, who analyzes and rates companies, according to both the quality of the service they provide, and the complaints received about them, awarded ALLPRO Tree and Landscaping Inc. its highest rating, an A+! So many of their satisfied customers are also happy to confirm the excellence of the service that they received from ALLPRO. If word of mouth advertising is the best form of advertising, David K. is one of their best advertisers. According to David, “the service from ALLPRO was phenomenal. They were

very responsive to the initial inquiry, highly competitive for the work that needed to be completed and they were extremely professional when completing the work. We are extremely pleased with ALLPRO.” Roger M. agreed as well, noting that he had used ALLPRO to remove several trees for a pool. “Job well done and will use them again.“ Susan Y. said “We’re extremely pleased with Allpro. Pete immediately responded to our call for an estimate and gave us a prompt, thorough written bid. Our tree removal project began and was completed exactly on time and they left our property looking pristine. Work was excellent and the crew was experienced, professional and friendly. I would highly recommend Allpro Tree & Landscaping.” Douglas Z. also had many wonderful things about Allpro, on his 5 star google review he wrote, “Pete handled a major

clean up, hedge trimming, mulching and tree trimming this past week.Five guys were here for two days and they worked hard. Very friendly, knowledgeable and dedicated to doing good work. The price was fair and we are very pleased with the results. I will use them again...I definitely recommend this company.” With hurricane season in full effect, while you are preparing your home, don’t forget your trees. Dead branches and over-hanging limbs represent potential hazards. The folks at ALLPRO are ready to help. Just call (727-409-3315 or 813-244-9234) and don’t forget your free, no obligation inspection. Tech Talk with Bob: Another Phish Tale!

By Bob Dalles

Phishing (pronounced “fishing”) is one of the many ways cyber criminals can attack you. It is the most popular strategy used by criminals to trick you into voluntarily handing them your personal data, your sensitive information, and sometimes your cash. In this type of attack, the criminal will attempt to extort cash from unwitting people by sending an email threatening to publicly humiliate the email recipient. Here’s an excerpt of one that ended up in my inbox just the other day. “Hello! I am a hacker who has access to your operating system. I also have full access to your account. I’ve been watching

you for a few months now. The fact is that you were infected with malware through an adult site that you visited. If you are not familiar with this, I will explain. Trojan Virus gives me full access and control over a computer or other device. This means that I can see everything on your screen, turn on the camera and microphone, but you do not know about it.” The email continues. “I also have access to all your contacts and all your correspondence. Why your antivirus did not detect malware? Answer: My malware uses the driver, I update its signatures every 4 hours so that your antivirus is silent.”

The email then threatens to release alleged videos of the recipient to all of the recipient’s contacts. “With one click of the mouse, I can send this video to all your emails and contacts on social networks. I can also post access to all your e-mail correspondence and messengers that you use.”

Then they go in for the kill. “If you want to prevent this, transfer the amount of $500 to my bitcoin address. After receiving the payment, I will delete the video and you will never hear from me again. I give you 50 hours (more than 2 days) to pay. I have a notice reading this letter, and the timer will work when you see this letter.

If I find that you have shared this message with someone else, the video will be immediately distributed. Best regards!” This social engineering technique has swindled cash from some recipients who received this email or one similar to it. Multiple versions of this email are circulating the internet. So, what do you do if one of these emails ends up in your inbox? Immediately delete it. There

really is no way to avoid these emails. Even if you use spam filters some will find their way through. Your best defense is internet safety awareness. Transform Your Health - Get On The Road To Wellness

Dr. Erika Bradshaw By Lisa Stephens

For many, the search for quality healthcare to resolve various issues can be overwhelming. Oftentimes, we get one issue resolved with one healthcare provider only to be referred on to another to address something else that is troubling our bodies. Fortunately, Dr. Erika Bradshaw and her professional staff understand the need for whole body awareness and the importance of knowing that our bodies work like machines; one thing affects another. Through integrative and holistic therapies, her ultimate goal is to provide optimal wellness to her patients. Angelica Loebenberg, ARNP joined the Transform Your Health family in 2018. Alongside Dr. Bradshaw, she offers holistic, personalized care to patients, as well as specialized nutritional and dietary consults and well woman exams. Originally from Los Angeles, Dr. Bradshaw was raised in a holistic environment. After completing medical school, she was eager to find other ways to treat patients. “I attended an ACAM (American College for the Advancement of Medicine)

conference and the rest was history.” Alternatives to traditional medicine are available and have proven to be very successful at achieving optimal health and well being. Integrative medicine entails diagnosing and treating present conditions as well as preventing others from occurring. “There are so many layers of success for each person. Most patients present with multiple symptoms and a variety of goals that they wish to achieve,” she said. She explained the body is like an onion. “Together we have to peel back the layers and work through the various symptoms and concerns piece by piece. By repairing one, you open the pathway to allow repair of another and so on.” Oftentimes, we don’t know specifically what is wrong but we know we just don’t feel our best. Dr. Bradshaw can help with those “grey” areas as well when it comes to hormones, fatigue and other components of our health that affect our well being. Dr. Bradshaw has been practicing in the Tampa Bay area since 2003 and received the coveted Angie’s List Super Service Award.

Reviews from Angie’s List include: “Dr. Bradshaw makes sure to get the right testing done to diagnose your issues and get to the root causes of health issues. I have conditions that my primary care doctor never found in many years that she easily identified and I am now on the road to wellness.” -Stacia G. “Dr. Bradshaw is amazing! She is extremely thorough; she spent about an hour with me. She carefully looks through all your medical records. She will also do the more natural approach or the traditional approach; whichever you prefer. She definitely knows how to do both very well. She is pretty much the best doctor I have seen when you have multiple issues or problems going on. If anybody can figure it out and get to the bottom if it, she can.” -Doug K. Stephen G. said, ”Dr. Bradshaw was very thorough, listened attentively, asked lots of questions, considered my situation and addressed treatment in detail. I have never had a doctor who listened to me,

reviewed my health and gave me options on treatment. I didn’t feel rushed or made to feel like my health issues were not a concern. She gave me hope that she could treat my problems and get results.” For each new patient, an initial appointment includes an hour long face to face evaluation and consult. Symptoms and concerns are addressed. Past and current living environments, supplements and medications currently being taken is discussed. Once this information is gathered, a treatment plan is created. Patients then sit down with a care consultant to review and discuss the specifics of their treatment plan and to get any additional information required to move forward toward wellness. Follow-up visits are typically requested in 4-6 weeks to evaluate test results and discuss any change in symptoms or conditions. At that time, any change in treatment, if necessary, will be discussed. “Helping my patients gives me pleasure. Seeing their health and overall quality of life improve is almost like watching your children grow. There is a special type of

pride associated with being able to witness and be a part of this journey towards improvement,” Dr. Bradshaw shared. Once optimal health is reached, a maintenance plan is prescribed. Each plan is specifically geared towards the individual patient to meet their personal needs. Success in achieving better health with Dr. Bradshaw has been experienced in a variety of areas. Chelation therapy has been researched (TACT trial) and noted as an alternative for those cardiac patients hoping to avoid surgery. For patients suffering from menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, irritability and mood swings, fatigue and insomnia, implementation of Bio-Identical Hormone therapy is a possible treatment solution. Dr. Bradshaw explained that by evaluating thyroid function in a more holistic way, natural treatments can be utilized which more closely mimic normal thyroid function. “Getting an idea of the complete,

bigger picture also allows evaluation of any underlying factor or condition such as iodine deficiency, auto immune disorders, etc.” she said. The office also treats patients suffering from chronic or adrenal fatigue. “Much of our current way of living keeps us in a state of ‘fight or flight,’ resulting in frequent or constant elevation of cortisol levels. Over time, this can lead to burnout and chronic fatigue,” she explained. BioTE Hormone Pellet Therapy is now available at Transform Your Health. Found to reduce and/or alleviate symptoms of fatigue, memory loss, mental fog, low sex drive, hot flashes and night sweats, utilization of pellet therapy provides yet another treatment option for achieving optimal wellness and an improved overall quality of life. Research on these therapies have shown reduction in the risks for diabetes and heart disease, prevention of osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s disease, and an increase in

energy levels, lean muscle and bone mass. Professional-grade supplements are available both on the website and in office to keep you on the wellness track. Monthly specials are available, and updates can be found on the website and Facebook pages. The September specials include an “Immune Boost” package consisting of a Myers IV with extra Vitamin C, Glutathione and an IonCleanse Detox Footbath; and a “Stress Buster” bundle which utilizes a special blend of Vitamin B12, BComplex and Vitamin

Tuna Tartare Diced raw Tuna, Avocados, Toasted Sesame Seeds, Wonton Chips and Ginger Oyster Sauce

“Mothers” Continued from page 1 “Mother’s honors all mothers. We’re an elevated Southern comfort,” explained Joel. “We like to rotate the menu yearly from Chicken Pot Pies to Sloppy Joes – everything that brings you back to your childhood and what your mother would make at her house. I wanted to bring something to Westchase that was a one-stop shop – good for families with children and good for adults.” Joel is not above bussing a table, cleaning the kitchen, or working his celebrated magic behind the bar. With a lifelong hospitality background, originally a master mixologist that placed third in the world for competition, Joel ran The Blue Martini in International Plaza for 17 years. His dream had always been to create a restaurant where the locallysourced ingredients were familiar, but done in a way that raised the bar of how food can be served. Presentation is key to Joel and his chef Alex Rosenblum. A customer eats with their eyes long before the meal touches their lips. “We use a team of people to

come up with our food. Plating is a big deal for me. I want everything coming out looking like it is art.” On this particular rainy day in August, Chef Alex delighted editor Carla Selby and I with samples from the kitchen of menu favorites including Tuna Tartare, an appetizer that could easily serve as a meal. A delicious ring of raw tuna, was nestled below fresh avocado and wonton chips, with toasted sesame seeds and a ginger oyster sauce. The Mother’s Berry Salad offered baby greens, succulent shrimp, sliced strawberries, shaved almonds, creamy goat cheese with a homemade blueberry vinaigrette. I stress homemade here because nothing coming out of the kitchen was coming out on cans or jars, preprocessed. Joel prides himself on daily fresh product deliveries from local purveyors to ensure the very freshest dining experience for his customers. As our table and bellies continued to become fuller, Chef Alex brought out one of the most requested menu items, the three-year Taste of Oldsmar and Taste of Westchase award-winning

braised skirt steak risotto featuring skirt steak braised two hours served over traditional risotto and mushrooms, topped with truffle oil and shaved parmesan. As I jealously watched my friend indulge in this stunning presentation of food, I almost wished I still ate red meat and dairy. “This is comfort food at its finest,” said Joel. “I call this your Ambien. If you’re eating this, you’re knocked out for the evening. Say good night.” My envy was short-lived as Chef Alex was easily able to cater to my particular dietary restrictions and brought to our table an Impossible Burger on a gluten-free Udi bun - a bun that didn’t fall apart the moment it was lifted from the plate - and a side of roasted Brussel sprouts that can only accurately be defined as heaven-sent. Happy can barely describe my reaction to Chef Alex and Joel explaining up to 70 percent of the menu can be made gluten-free, including their incredible pasta dishes. “We cater to every diet,” Joel said. “You will not leave hungry.” Finally, when we knew we couldn’t eat another bite, Joel brought out the popular

Poptini, a martini with the Mother’s famous twist - a frozen Popsicle inside the most delicious concoction. Mine was the appropriately-named Mother Pucker. A martini glass with a sugar rim was filled with Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka, Triple Sec, Tres Agave Sour mix, fresh orange and lemon juice with a splash of lemon lime soda served with Limoncello frozen pop. Be prepared to pucker, but in a really good – I want some more – kind of way. Carla enjoyed their Mother Fudger Poptini. Its presentation alone was gorgeous. Chocolate drizzled down the sides of the martini glass. I can only imagine how delicious the cream mixed with Van Gogh Vanilla Vodka, Kahlua, Godiva Chocolate Liquor tasted. When you are a jet-set world-renowned mixologist, it only makes sense that Joel’s bar boasts something for everyone – from wine and craft beer to house wine on tap and creative cocktails. Mother’s drink menu is handcrafted, custom cocktails that incorporate the finest of ingredients in the most innovative way. Some exceptional curious combinations with fun names include Drunk Piggy and

Toasted Monkey. In Drunk Piggy, a smoked glass highlights Four Roses Bourbon, Apple Simple Syrup, Plum Bitters, Black Walnut Bitters and garnished with a slice of candied pepper bacon and a Luxardo cherry. The Toasted Monkey features Monkey Rum Toasted Coconut, Monkey Rum Spiced Rum. II Tramonto Amaretto paired with fresh orange and pineapple juice, Tres Agave Sour Mix and garnished with a Pineapple Leaf, sliced pineapple, cherry and served in recycled Monkey Rum Bottle Glass. Joel and his team is highly involved in their Westchase community having interns come from Alonso High School. “We’ve rotated like 30 kids since we started. It wasn’t a job-job. It was fun, especially for a first-time job. We had them doing everything. It was not your typical job.” Mother’s also hosts numerous Tuesday and Wednesday spirit night fundraisers where kids eat free and with ten percent goes back to the school,

several large networking events, even bridal and baby showers. They are proud of their philanthropic efforts for St. Francis Society Animal Rescue. In July they raised over $3,000 with a pet themed trivia and a portion of the proceeds from the September anniversary celebration will be donated to the rescue. When asked why he thinks his customers love the restaurant so much: was it the friendly-staff, the amazing food, the weekly specials, the innovative cocktails, the Yappy Hour for pet parents, the innovative changing menu, the weekly live entertainment, the special events, the community outreach or a combination of them all, Joel quipped, “Our motto is food, family, friends. I mean, who doesn’t love their Mothers?” Mother’s Restaurant is located at 12227 W Linebaugh Ave, Tampa, FL 33626. Reservations are encouraged.
