A Labor Day Message & Special Thanks By the time some of you read this, Labor Day will have already come and gone. Regardless of the timing, I hope you all had a wonderful and safe weekend with your loved ones. For most people, “Labor Day” means two things; a day off and a chance to say goodbye to the summer. But do you know the meaning behind it? Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women. It has been celebrated as a national holiday in the United States and Canada since 1894. Labor Day was a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the incredible contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. I know a lot of us are struggling these days, so many have lost their jobs, others have had to shut down their longstanding businesses. It hasn’t been easy, but we cannot give up! I have had one of the hardest years of my entire life. I have been challenged physically, mentally, emotionally, psychologically, and financially. As I am sure, a lot of you have as well. These past two months, I have focused my editorials on maintaining positivity through COVID19, on keeping the faith and staying strong throughout these unprecedented times. The words of encouragement I share with you are also a reminder to myself. I have been blessed to receive so many beautiful messages from some of our readers this past couple of weeks, and I wanted to say thank you very much from the bottom of my heart for all your kind words. I am touched that so many of you have taken the time to personally write to me to thank me for my latest articles. Knowing that I can touch someone’s life,

or that I said something that brightened someone’s day, makes a massive difference in my life. All the sadness, the frustrations, even the body aches, and pain seem to subside with your kind and positive words. I want to take a moment to send a special message to Carneal Overton. First of all, I am very sorry for the loss of your mother—my deepest condolences, Carneal. As someone who lost her father not long ago, my heart breaks for you. I still cry a lot and miss him dearly, but I take comfort knowing my father is in Heaven watching over my family and me, and hopefully one day we can be together again. I appreciated your message so much it brought me to tears. I will say a special prayer for your mother and you, Carneal; you’re both in my thoughts. Thank you for reaching out. Thank you for letting me know that my words of encouragement helped you keep the faith. Stay strong Carneal, and this too shall pass. As for everyone else who wrote to me, Lindsay W., Jackie J., Robert D., Mary E. B., and everyone else who takes comfort in my words, thank you, from the bottom of my heart. You are the reason I love what I do, and you are what our magazines are all about; a local community of supporting and encouraging individuals coming together for the common good, helping one another stay positive and motivated through the ups and downs. Stay strong, everyone, stay safe, keep wearing your masks, keep social distancing, but keep supporting your local businesses, keep on keeping on. We will pull through! Until next time,

Carla M. Dubis Tedeschi.

once again participated as the Judges and local prominent citizens and business leaders were handcuffed and taken to a nearby jail cell. The felons contacted friends and associates asking them to send bail! Ray Ferrara, President of ProVise Management raised the most bail with $15,830 and Keith Kunzig (AKA Big Nasty) had the most donors with 61 donors! Other felons included David Siracusa, Commissioner Jack Mariano, Steve Farrell and Terald Hopkins. 2 children also attended and received therapy trikes which will provide physical therapy all while having fun. The trikes strengthen their

legs and cores. Executive Director of Wheelchairs 4 Kids was amazed at the event’s success given the current situation. “We had canceled this event in April due to the pandemic, but our donations were down 70% in the

last 5 months and we realized that we needed to figure out how to make it work while being safe. Thankfully, these community leaders stepped up and were willing to either come out in person or participate via ZOOM. I never dreamed it would be

this successful. It doesn’t get us back to where we should be but it is a huge step. We can help a lot of kids with this money.” The organization is currently working on 38 requests for help and have an additional 12 on a waitlist. Applications are coming in daily as

Sally Giar Celebrates over 30 Years of Interior Design with Decorating Den Interiors Decorating Den Interiors has been in business for over 50 years. Tampa Bay area franchise owner and designer Sally Giar has been in business herself since 1988 and is one of the company’s longest-tenured representative. Sally has been a resident of Florida since 1973 and worked in retail home furnishings for several years before purchasing her franchise. She says Decorating Den continues to be successful because clients appreciate that the business comes to them with a complimentary consultation and no hourly fees, whether you want to update a room, a piece

of furniture, your window treatments or redecorate your entire home from top to bottom. “There are not many 50year old companies,” says Sally, especially as home design businesses seem to be contracting because so many people now turn to online shopping, “but Decorating Den Interiors is growing and the last couple of years have been really tremendous for us.” Sally says one of the biggest benefits of working with Decorating Den is that her design studio gets parked right in your driveway. Stocked full of fabric samples and catalogs, the Decorating

will help you choose how to decorate your interior space while standing inside and looking at that very space. That is something online shopping just can’t do. Think hiring an interior designer is expensive? It’s more expensive not to!

Bob the Computer Guy: STOP: Before Repairing Your PC! Imagine this. The computer you bought from that big box store seven months ago no longer works. No problem, it’s still under warranty. You call the manufacturer and get a return authorization from them. You pack and ship your computer to them. Today, two months later, you are finally getting it back from the manufacturer and cannot wait to get it up and running. You hit the switch and it boots right up. Seems to be running as fast as it did when you bought it. Wow! This booting speed reminds you of why you bought the computer in the first place. In almost no time your

12 SEPTEMBER 2020

system is up and ready to go, however you notice that your desktop doesn’t quite look the same way you had it before you sent it for repair. Upon further investigation you realize that some of your newest programs are missing, you cannot access your printer, and most importantly, all your pictures, videos, music and other data is nowhere to be found. Your computer works great, but all of your personal stuff is gone. You call the manufacturer to ask about your missing pictures and documents and other data. Suddenly you find out that the only obligation the manufacturer had

Bob Dalles, owner Bob the Computer Guy to you under the warranty was to repair or replace your computer to the way it was the day you brought it home from the store and took it out of the box. You learn the hard way that your missing programs, data, etc. are your problem. You

were supposed to back all that stuff up before you sent your computer in for repair; but nobody tells you that. Many people find themselves in this predicament every day. Well I’m telling you now, so after reading this, you’ll know what to do. Computers are viewed by some people as being no different than any other electronic appliance; like an electronic coffee maker. Electronic coffee makers use a combination of hardware and software to make them function. However, the software that runs your coffee maker is not as sophisticated as the software that runs your computer. People

For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

typically do not differentiate between the hardware and software aspects of a computer system. The truth is, where the software in your coffee maker never changes, the software in your computer is constantly changing. Especially your data files as you add and delete your music, pictures and other personal documents. All this information is stored on your computer’s hard disk drive (HDD). Your HDD stores all computer software information including your personal and unique computer information. This unique information is created over time as you use your computer system by adding programs, printers, data, etc. All these changes alter the contents of your HDD. When you send your computer to the manufacturer for repair, your HDD may be physically replaced by having a new HDD installed into your computer or logically replaced by having all the information on the HDD erased and then rewritten with the information the HDD had on it when your

computer was new out of the box. Think of it this way. If you ever had the battery in your car replaced, the first thing you probably learned when you got back into your car is that all your radio preset stations have been wiped out due to the battery being disconnected. The auto repair shop’s responsibility is not to restore your radio presets but to replace your car’s battery with a working one. You’ll just have to reprogram those preset stations all over again. The same is true of your computer. Important information can be lost during your computer’s repair. Important personal data, like rare family photos, or that business proposal you’ve been working on all week, may be impossible to replace. It is always your responsibility to make sure you have what you need to restore the programs and data you have added to your computer since you bought it. But most people do not figure this out until it’s too late. So how do you minimize your data loss when

you need your computer system repaired? The first thing you do is make certain that all your personal data is backed up. This can be difficult if your computer will not turn on. Even if your computer will not turn on, it may still be possible that your data can be extracted from the HDD before you send your computer off for repair. If you are not familiar with how to get your data backed up, give us a call. We do stuff like this every day and can painlessly manage all of this for you. The next thing you will need are the installation disk and/or files for any software you added to the computer after you bought it. Make sure you have all your installation media and product keys so these items can be reinstalled with as little trouble as possible. A list of your email and website user names and passwords are also going to need to be reentered the first time you try to access any of the secured websites you visit. If you are not sure if you have everything you need to recover all of the additions you made to your

computer since you bought it, contact a professional computer technician to help you get all your ducks in a row. “ Mystic Fish” story continued from page 1 available only on Monday through Wednesday.” These decadent take out specials include a Korean Boneless Short Rib braised in brown sugar, soy, garlic, sesame, red pepper flakes, scallions and served with rice and vegetable; Chicken “ de Chevre,” a marinated grilled chicken breast topped with a French goat cheese, dried tomato, fresh basil finished with lemon butter and served with rice and vegetable; Sauteed Pork Chop “ Milanese,” a prime prairie fresh pork loin chop pounded, panfried with a ParmigianoReggiano panko crust, and served with baby arugula salad and lemon, or Shrimp and Chicken “NOLA” Pasta, Cajun seared shrimp and grilled chicken over linguine with an alfredo sauce and roasted red bell peppers, and served with a vegetable. If its namesake is more your style, the take out special menu includes a Baked Cod “Mediterranean,” a succulent, flaky cod in a saffron – vegetable broth with rice and a vegetable. Opened in 2001, despite its luxurious surroundings, Mystic Fish is not stuffy. It has been gifted with 5-star reviews not only about the food, the impeccable service, but for the friendly, relaxed, fun, and want-tohang-out atmosphere. Everything you see upon opening the heavy ornate wooden doors makes you think dining in such

luxurious surroundings is going to cost a fortune. The décor features a dropped ceiling, 1,200 hand-laid, iridescent Mexican abalone shells border, three saltwater aquariums, horned lit sculptures made from reelto-reel motion picture film and hand-blown wall scones from Chicago, and threedimensional swimming cuddle fish carving on the left wall. Stained glass windows and unique light fixtures allow for softer light around the whole dining area, bar and Italian fossil lined booths, and teak wood tables draped in white linen tablecloths. But you’d be wrong. Despite the extravagant description, when owner and executive chef, Doug Bebell and his partners opened Mystic Fish in 2001, he partnered with Fishbone, a Gulfport artist with the end goal to design a relaxing restaurant for the gathering of family and friends, a romantic date night, or a soothing nightcap. Doug stressed that Mystic Fish was never intended to be a posh restaurant, simply a friendly casual place where highquality food was served in beautiful surroundings at a reasonable price. In 2001, nothing like his vision for serving an affordable highend product existed in North Pinellas, and today, nineteen years later, he still is the leader in delicious, innovative meals. “People may assume we’re fancy because of the white table cloths, but we’d For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

rather not be fancy. We’re your casual neighborhood restaurant. We pride ourselves on our service and our food. Our rating on all the sites we are on is top-notch. We know it’s all about our customers.”

When you finally take the opportunity to discover the hidden gem in a strip shopping center on Tampa Road, be prepared for not just a delicious meal and a diverse menu that caters to every taste preference

and age – from millennial to senior citizen – but an experience you won’t soon forget. “Though we are in a strip mall, once you walk in and the door shuts behind you, it’s not like you are in a strip mall anymore,” said Chef Doug. “I would have never have imagined this is where we’d be in 2020. It’s crazy. We’re waiting for people to find their comfort zone. Eventually, they will back come out, so we will do whatever is needed.” For a menu, directions, and more information on For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

ONE OF THE TOP SAT AND ACT TUTORS IN THE COUNTRY IS RIGHT HERE IN TAMPA BAY

Greater Tampa Bay enjoys a unique resource in helping students and families have their best possible futures, including students doing their best on the SAT and ACT Exams so important for College Entrance and Bright Futures Scholarships. The former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, Dr. Wayne Adams has created an exceptional and unique package that builds on his extensive experience including degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice. If you ask Dr. Adams what he does, his answer is quite interesting: “I help my students and their families have their best possible futures, including doing their best on the SAT and ACT Exams.” HIS STUDENTS NORMALLY

20 SEPTEMBER 2020

IMPROVE 200 – 350 POINTS ON THE SAT TOTAL SUPERSCORE, AND 4 – 7 POINTS ON THE ACT COMPOSITE. A major reason for his outstanding results are the special techniques and learning skills developed over many years. These include teaching students how to speed-read at 1,000+ words per minute: multiple memory aids to triple a student’s speed of learning and remembering vocabulary; reverse engineering that doubles “learning and retention speed”; many additional math techniques to improve speed, reduce errors, and handle the “ultra-hard” questions; “bottom up” reading for key ideas and concepts, and structured essay writing following his guides. He believes that half of a student scoring well is mental. So much of his course include

mental techniques such as “Having fun taking the test,” defining success as “When you finish the exam, walk out of the room, and look back on all we have done … he simply wants you to say to yourself, ‘I have done the very best with the time and priorities that I had.’”; taking

a three-part “Mental Break” when concentration starts to fade; and seeing an exam as their opportunity to show just how well they can do which reduces an enormous amount of mental pressure so the student can stay in their “high performance zone”. WHAT STUDENTS SAY

ABOUT DR. ADAMS AND THE CLASSES. “This is not the average, boring class. I will learn.” “I really liked the involvement in the sessions, rather than just teaching from a book.” “Learning the structure of the Essay was great.” “When I started, I took a 25 question vocabulary test right away and got 5 out of 25 correct. After his intensive vocab “memory hooks” approach, I retook the test and got 23 correct. Wow! ” “I have never had a teacher who has so many creative and effective ways to help me learn. And I like the style of the classes, which are like college seminars taught by a full professor. ” “The time goes by so fast.” “We work. We learn. It’s worth it.” WHAT PARENTS SAY ABOUT DR. ADAMS AND THE CLASSES. “You helped our daughter qualify as a National Merit Finalist and helped our family in college planning. Now she is a freshman

at a “Top 25” school with a summer studying at Cambridge U in England. Thank you so much.” “When our son took your class as a ninth grader, his baseline scores on the SAT were around 700. When he took the exam, he scored 1100 and qualified for the Duke TIP Program. This score was higher than the average score for a senior.” “Our daughter needed had scored a 14 on the ACT and needed an 18 to satisfy FCAT and graduate with her class. Thanks to you, she scored a 20!” “Our daughter had an excellent GPA and high standing in her IB Program, but her SAT scores were around 1150. After your class, she scored over 1400. Thank you.” “Not only did our son improve his scores, he is doing far better in English at school because of the critical thinking and writing skills he learned in your class.” “We are so excited because our daughter just learned she was

accepted for Early Admission to Princeton, and will be going in the fall. Your major increases in her ACT and her SAT scores were a major reason.” If You Would Like To Talk More With Dr. Adams About Your Student … Please contact him at 727-253-0639 or send an email to wwa0811@mykolab.com. Classes are on-line via Zoom, or on-site at the East Lake Lutheran Church of the Resurrection at the intersection of East Lake Rd and Ridgmoor/Village across from the Publix shopping center and Lansbrook Golf Course. On-site classes are COVID compliant and private. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve 200 – 350 points on the Writing, Reading, Writing and Essay, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to 9 of the “Top 10” universities in the country, 18 of the “Top 25”, and many schools in Florida. These schools include Harvard, Yale,
