Massage is globally recognized as a beneficial therapeutic treatment that offers stress relief and aids in relaxation by helping to reduce anxiety, but more than that, therapeutic massage helps in healing. Massage is clinically proven to improve circulation, range of motion and flexibility, while helping to relieve pain, reduce blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and shorten healing time after an injury. Because of these many benefits, more and more physicians are prescribing massage as a way to help patients to return to their jobs after work-related injuries, and the great news for local patients is that Barkdoll Massage Therapy recently

began accepting Federal Worker’s Comp patients in the Tampa Bay Area. Another great service that many employers are utilizing as a way to show their appreciation to employees is Barkdoll Massage Therapy’s Corporate Seated Massage! Whatever your reason for wanting a massage, Barkdoll Massage Therapy makes it easy, affordable, and best of all, Barkdoll comes to you. Karla Barkdoll has been a licensed professional massage therapist since 2001, and her unique mobile massage business takes all of the stress out of your massage experience by bringing therapeutic massage services right to you – in your own comfortable space. SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: SUMMER STRATEGIES Summer in Florida … hot, humid, and a great time to prepare for the SAT and ACT Exams with available time and the new SAT Exam on August 26th, and first ACT Exam on September 10th. Rising seniors like having the time to really focus and study with results known early in the fall. If strong, then no further prep or tests are needed; if not quite what desired, there is time to take it again. Rising juniors like to see how well they can do, plus this is a perfect time to prep for the PSAT in October and have the best shot at a national merit scholarship. Rising sophomores like the preparation, especially those aiming for “Top 25” or “Top 10” colleges and universities and possibly major scholarships. Some very good news is that the SAT finally gave in to pressure and added an exam in August. Results will be back in time for UF admissions the first of November and applications for early admission to other colleges and universities, which has been a major problem with the SAT in prior

6

years. The first ACT Exam of the fall is always scheduled for the early September. I have many options for summer preparations. First, my prep classes can be taken individually, or the SAT and ACT can be combined which saves 15 class hours from taking them separately because of their overlapping material. My classes can start in June after the last ACT exam on June 10th, or in July or early August, depending upon whether a student wants to take one or two classes a week, and how we need to schedule around family vacations, jobs, or other time requirements. Make sure and check when your high school begins classes in early August because they keep starting earlier and earlier each year. Classes can be private or semiprivate, and my maximum class is three students. Often, students have friends or “study buddies” they would like to prepare with. I do like to schedule our Dress Rehearsal Exam and follow-up Review shortly before the actual exam. If you would like to talk with

me further about your student and my summer classes, please contact me at 727-253-0639 or at wwa0811@mykolab.com. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve 200 – 350 points on the Writing, Reading, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to eight of the top ten universities in the country, seventeen of the top twenty-five, and many schools in Florida. These schools include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Air

Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. This year, he also tutored three juniors who scored at the national merit finalist/semi-finalist levels on the most recent PSAT. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

Rebecca W. says, “I have been using Cornerstone for a couple of years now. I started off on my primary house with plumber Kiel installing an iron/water filtration for iron in my well. I then had an electrician install additional outlets at my home and a HVAC agent service my a/c system. I was talked into buying the service plan by Kiel and I’m so happy I did. I am getting quality work at a discount. Today I have my dad’s rental property getting flipped, because well it needs to and he can’t do it anymore due to dementia. I hired some contractors to fix up the property (redo floors, tile work, and even install cabinets). One contractor even claimed to be a prior plumber and assured me he could conquer the job with quality. Well…thank goodness Jerry, a Cornerstone plumber, came to my rescue because my so-called plumber had no clue what he is doing. Jerry is taking the time to make sure the plumbing is done right and to county code! Going above and beyond the call of duty. Every time I have called cornerstone for electric, plumbing, or HVAC it has always been top-notch service. Cool Off With a Trip to a Florida Spring! By Katie Thomas June is here and we are in the full swing of summer, which means soaring temperatures for Tampa Bay Area. With record highs, locals are looking for ways to cool down and enjoy the sunshine without breaking the bank or burning to a crisp! Luckily, Florida is home to more than just beautiful beaches - we are blessed with gorgeous natural springs that offer cool relief with 72-degree water year round! From Homosassa to Gainesville, you can find glorious cool freshwater springs to enjoy with your family on less than a tank of gas! Grab your masks and snorkels and get ready to jump in and cool off! Where in the Heck is Chassahowitzka?! A short drive north on U.S. Highway 19 will bring to you to the Chassahowitzka River, known the locals as The Chaz. Offering picturesque views of Old Florida with oak-lined paths, drive down Miss

Maggie Drive and you’ll find access to one of Florida’s hidden gems. The Chaz is part of The Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge and offers visitors the opportunity to camp, hike, swim, snorkel, canoe and more on the clear, cold waters of the river. Dog and family friendly, The Chaz is home to vast expanses of hardwood swamps, clear as crystal springs, salt marshes and the occasional manatee or otter sighting! Known as a paddler’s paradise, The Chaz is the perfect spot to escape the Florida heat and reconnect with nature. One of my favorite spots on The Chaz is Seven Sisters Springs, which is just a short paddle down the river. Seven Sisters is a collection of seven small springs that connect on one of the small creeks of The Chaz. You will find one large spring that allows you to easily swim through the limestone opening if you dare. More experienced freedivers can be seen snorkeling through the six other springs that connect with entrance and exit spots not recommended

if you are not an experienced diver or have any type of claustrophobia. I’ve snorkeled through the tunneling beauty of Seven Sisters and the ethereal experience is one that cannot easily be matched. While paddling The Chaz, make sure to check out The Crack. It takes some time to paddle back to but you’ll find a cool spring to snorkel around, see tons of wildlife and there is even a rope swing for the brave (careful though)! Real Florida Mermaids at Weeki Wachee! Weeki Wachee Springs, located in Hernando County, is one of Florida’s more well known springs and family travel destinations. In 1947, Weeki Wachee aired its first mermaid show in the underwater theater that is located in the basin of Weeki Wachee Springs. Soon after the first mermaid show, Weeki Wachee became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Florida and since its opening, the mermaids and

Katie swinging over “The Chaz” the spring have become Florida legends. “Once a Mermaid, Always a Mermaid,” is a long said motto of all the girls who have performed with tails in the ancient spring. Visitors can enjoy the mermaid performance, paddle the river, take a riverboat tour, swim at Buccaneer Bay (complete with spring fed water slides) and view abundant flora and fauna. Rich in Florida history, beauty

and tradition, Weeki Wachee is a must visit for families on summer break! Kings Bay in Crystal River – Home to the West Indian Manatee! One of the best places in Florida for up-close manatee encounters is located in Crystal River. Kings Bay in Crystal River is home to over 30 known springs, including Three Sisters, which is one of the best places for manatee viewing in Florida. Three Sisters Springs offers boardwalk nature trails that are handicap accessible for those looking to see the springs from land. You can also paddle into Three

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

Sisters Springs from a boat launch that is located in Hunter Springs for an even closer interaction. During the summer months, you can expect to see around 30 manatees a day throughout Kings Bay. Renting a paddleboard, kayak or canoe is highly recommended for those looking to swim in the water and for more up-close encounters with manatees – but not too close – remember these gentle sea mammals are protected. While visiting Kings Bay make sure you don’t miss out on Tarpon Hole, Mullet’s Gullet and Little Hidden Springs which are all accessible by boat. Ichetucknee State Park – Pristine, Clear and Wild! One of the most pristine,

untouched and well-preserved rivers in Florida has to be the Ichetucknee. Paddleboard, canoe, kayak or tube down the Ichetucknee River for a relaxing, gorgeous and fun adventure. You will love the crystal clear water on The Itch (a local name) and enjoy the cool temps of the spring-fed river. For access to the river and Blue Hole Spring (the main spring) visit Ichetucknee Springs State Park. You can picnic, take a nature walk and enjoy access to the river and spring from two different entrances located at the north and south ends of the park. Blue Hole is the largest spring on The Itch and pours out 26,668 gallons of water per month! Snorkelers and swimmers love the clear, blue spring during summer months. Blue Hole is located in a beautiful wooded area, offering lots of shade and bird watching. Certified Scuba Divers can dive the cave located in the spring and check out Blue, Gray and Loft room caverns! To tube the Itch, you can rent a tube at one of the local tubing outfitters along the highway. They will tie your tube to your car and send you on your way. Make sure to grab some hot boiled peanuts off the highway for

a real taste of Florida! The float can last from 1 to 4 hours depending on your launch point; just ask one of the park rangers to help you find the best launch point for you and your crew! Old Florida Awaits! Florida is more than beaches and palm trees and during the summer, a visit to the springs and rivers under a shady oak canopy is the best way to beat the heat! From manatee and otter sightings to cool blue water and cypress trees – Old Florida is waiting for you this summer! Info: FloridaSprings.org

issues and well care visits can now be taken care of right in the comfort of your own home. Most times, we need our veterinarian to see our pets for the normal stuff: Vaccinations, wellness exams, parasite control, micro-chipping and minor health issues. But when there is a bigger medical problem to deal with, Dr. Sarah and Dr. Pablo are more than qualified to care for your pet. They keep up on the very latest developments and continuous trainings in their field, and Tarpon Woods Veterinary Medical Center is fully equipped to provide medical care to

your pet in critical cases where time is of the essence. The office offers state-of-the-art technology and in-house capabilities with x-ray and radiography equipment, a surgical room that includes critical care monitoring (including EKG, pulse oxymetry and blood pressure monitoring) and ICU equipment (IV fluids pump, circulating water blankets, Oxygen therapy). There is an isolation suite to protect patients in case they see any animals that might have contagious diseases. Surgical procedures include spaying, neutering, lacerations and abscess treatment, tumor removal, abdominal surgery, ear/eye surgery, reproductive surgery and more. The best way to understand how great Tarpon Woods Veterinarian Medical Center is through the words and praise of the pet owners who visit the Schachts. Hannah Casey says, “This vet office is great! If you are looking for a personal experience where you know your fur family will be remembered and treated exceptionally well - look no further! Dr. Sarah is always available to her clients and response times are always fast! Cheyenne is also very helpful at the front desk. I’ve called her on several occasions for various things and she is always nice and really

knowledgeable. Love this place!” C.N. says, “Bring all of my animals (2 dogs and 1 cat) to Dr. Sarah, and would highly recommend her to anyone! I really love how quiet and clean her clinic is and having 2 very skittish dogs I feel like they are not nearly as nervous coming here. Dr. Sarah always takes the time to go slow with my pets and answer all of my questions and concerns, which I really appreciate. She treats my pets like they were her own, and really cares about them. She even came in after hours when I had an emergency with my dog to take care of her! Her prices are also very fare compared to other hospitals in the area. It is always a great experience every time we go there.” At Tarpon Woods Veterinary Medical Center you and your pet become family! Your pet deserves the best and Tarpon Woods Veterinary Medical Center is here to provide you with the care your furry family deserves! Tarpon Woods Veterinary Medical Center is located at 800 Tarpon Woods Blvd, Suite F 3, in Palm Harbor (across the street from Walgreens). Wildfire Preparedness Wildfires are a natural part of our beautiful landscape, so preparing our homes and families for wildfire is essential. Florida is currently experiencing elevated fire conditions. East Lake Fire District Firefighters would like to remind all residents, especially those in the wildland/urban interface, that creating and maintaining defensible space around their homes is critical. Firefighters urge property owners to not delay in preparing

their family and home for wildfire. Take the following actions now: • CLEAR leaves and other vegetative debris from roofs, gutters, porches, and decks. This helps prevent embers from igniting your home. • REMOVE dead vegetation and other items from under your deck or porch, and within 10 feet of the house. • REMOVE flammable materials (wood piles, propane tanks)

within 30 feet of your home’s foundation and outbuildings, including garages and sheds. If it can catch fire, don’t let it touch your house, deck or porch. • Wildfire can spread to tree tops. PRUNE trees so the lowest branches are 6 to 10 feet from the ground. • KEEP your lawn hydrated and maintained. If it is brown, cut it down to reduce fire intensity. Dry grass and shrubs are fuel for wildfire. • Don’t let debris and lawn cuttings linger. DISPOSE of these items quickly to reduce fuel for fire. If a wildfire should start, always

contact the Fire District, even if you have put the fire out. Firefighters would like to ensure the fire is completely extinguished and will not reignite later in the day or overnight. We are always here to help! For more information about the wildland/urban interface and protecting your home from wildfires, visit the Florida Forest Service website and review the Firewise Communities information at http://www.freshfromflorida.com/ Divisions-Offices/Florida-ForestService/For-Communities/FirewiseCommunities .

“Mystic Fish” Continued from page 1 the top-rated restaurants in Tampa Bay. One reason Mystic Fish has such excellent reviews is evident from the moment you walk through the front door. The décor and ambiance of the dining room is modern coastal with an artistic edge. Abalone shells border the perimeter of the ceiling, which is an art installation all of its own. You will notice fine details of carefully creative design everywhere your eye lands. Along with some incredible pieces of fine art by local artists, there are aquariums of living art brimming with coral and tropical fish that divide the dining room visible from every table. The dining room is able to accommodate many guests without the feeling of being crowded. The design of the entire restaurant is aesthetically pleasing, and is arranged in a way that provides guests the utmost comfort and openness. One customer says, “This place serves the freshest of ingredients with a staff that is friendly, which makes you feel pretty special. Highly recommend the hogfish special; they prepare it like no other.” Even more important than Mystic Fish’s curbside appeal, is the well thought out and delightful menu. Mystic Fish is known for creating refreshing seafood dishes as well as some exquisite dishes for meat eaters and vegetarians. With a menu that has something for everyone, Chef Doug has really hit the mark with a well thought out selection of plates. Daily specials are offered in addition to menu items. “Eventide Specials” are offered daily from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. (orders must be placed by 5:30, last seating to receive this special pricing is at 5:15). Eventide Specials consists of early dinner specials with special pricing. In the spirit of the season, Chef Doug is also offering “Summer Specials” on Sunday through Thursday only. The summer special is your choice of Maine Lobster tail 6 oz., Filet Mignon 6 oz., Mixed Grill (three fish), Filet 4 oz. with Grilled Shrimp, The Natural (local caught fish baked in lemon, EVOO, and salt), or Crab Cakes for only $18.50. The summer entrees are served with a Mystic Field green salad, vegetable, and your choice of starch. I recently had the pleasure of dining at Mystic Fish with friends. “Massage” Continued from page 1 Baltimore School of Massage and is licensed in Maryland, DC, Virginia and Florida. She is a member of the American Massage Therapy Association and is Nationally Board Certified. “Your Health Is Your Wealth” Barkdoll Massage Therapy’s philosophy “Your Health is Your Wealth” showcases Karla’s belief in the art of massage as a tool to increase the quality of your life, which is your greatest asset. Karla and her licensed massage therapists take the time to learn about their clients and any physical discomfort or problems they are having, so they can create a therapeutic massage protocol that will be most beneficial to each client. Their goal is to make sure that massage makes a difference in your life. Barkdoll Massage Therapy offers a range of affordable massage therapy modalities. Swedish Massage is designed to relieve muscle tension, improve circulation and reduce stress, and many find that this massage is a great start to begin therapeutic

treatment. Warm Stone Therapy, which is the art of using heated stones in combination with a Swedish massage, is a great method used to dissolve muscle tension and induce deep relaxation. Deep Tissue Massage is best for targeting specific areas to help with pain and inflammation, and this method is often used to help control chronic pain. This massage technique is perfect for those muscles that tense up while typing, driving or doing repetitive work. Karla says, “During deep tissue massages I use trigger points to specifically find the places where the work needs to be done.” Sports and Injury Rehab Massage combines the benefits of deep tissue massage with stretching, and can actually increase range of motion in joints. This type of massage is beneficial to those recovering from all kinds of injuries, whether sportsrelated, work-related or from a car accident. Many times, Karla will use a combination of massage modalities for optimal results. Barkdoll Massage Therapy brings therapeutic massage services to you at work with Corporate Seated Massage – a fantastic way to improve morale and show your employees that they are appreciated. Corporate Seated Massage is a fully clothed, seated massage that can be done right at the office. This style of massage focuses on the back, neck, shoulders, scalp, arms and hands. Andy Wilson, CEO of Quiet Professionals, says, “We started out using Barkdoll Massage for our corporate staff in-house seated massage treatment twice monthly for 2 hours at a time. I found that the treatments created such a positive work environment it needed to occur more frequently. Karla now comes in for 4 hours one day every week and the staff loves it! It has had such a positive impact that my wife adopted Barkdoll Massage for her staff at State Farm as well.” Lori Meister shares, “During our first annual Wellness Fair at Vology we

were thrilled to offer chair massages to all of our employees. It is such a great way to reward our employees and give them some much needed stress relief! Many of us forget how much time we spend sitting at our desks hunched over the computer, and don’t realize how much tension we carry. Just 10 minutes in the chair massage chair and you can feel the tension getting released from your neck and back. The team from Barkdoll Massage Therapy was wonderful and we will be using their services again.” Been Injured at Work? According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2015 over 3 million private industry and government workers sustained on the job injuries. Barkdoll Massage Therapy noticed this trend and has shifted their focus to assist injured employees in their recovery, and now proudly accepts Federal Worker’s Comp patients. They also accept State Workers’ Comp patients as long as the insurance carrier for the Workers’ Comp claim approves the therapy. This is great news for those who have been prescribed massage therapy for a work-related injury.

If you are a Federal employee that has sustained an on the job injury and get benefits under FECA (Federal Employees Compensation Act), and have an approved claim with OWCP (Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs), Barkdoll Massage Therapy can get your therapy approved at no cost to you as long as you have a prescription from your treating physician and the massage therapy is medically necessary. They are able to do this because they have an OWCP

expert on staff that has been working with Federal employees for over a decade. He is also able to answer any questions you might have regarding the claims process and can assist in representing you if that is what you need. Karla says, “Some people might wonder, ‘Why would I get massage therapy for an injury because massage is just a way to pamper yourself?’ Not only does therapeutic massage improve circulation, and

increase range of motion and muscle flexibility, it also has been proven to shorten recovery time and even heal injuries. Massage also is excellent for pain management, can help to eliminate headaches, and can even help prevent future injuries by helping the body strengthen.” Karla’s client Victor says, “Since starting my therapy with Karla of Barkdoll Massage Therapy, I have noticed a considerable decrease in the pain that I feel on a daily basis. Having chronic pain is not fun to deal with but I can now look forward to Karla coming twice a week since she and her staff got my therapy approved through OWCP (Office of Worker’s Compensation Programs). I did not realize the benefits that massage would have as I always thought massage was basically just a luxury to help you relax. Karla is great to work with because she keeps me informed about my progress that she notices from doing the massage.” Another client, Melissa, says, “Once Karla’s staff got my massage approved through OWCP she has been coming to my house twice a week. It is nice to not have to worry about going to her due to the chronic pain I suffer from. She is excellent at

working with you to see you on your schedule and always lets me know if she is running behind due to other appointments. She even has an OWCP expert on staff that can help with questions regarding OWCP and my claim. I highly recommend her as she is very experienced, always makes sure the technique she is using is not causing any pain and always asks how I am feeling and where I need the most work done for that session. Overall, an excellent experience using her as my therapist.” Whether you want a massage just to relax and relieve stress or need it to recover from an injury, Barkdoll Massage Therapy and their team of therapists have you covered and will put your heath first. Remember, “Your Health is Your Wealth.” Barkdoll Massage Therapy is an entirely mobile massage therapy business that comes to you.
