Your “Doctor’s Doctor”: Urologist and Urogynecologist – Dr. David DiPiazza By Tom Bostock It is a natural process for our bodies to change over time. Aging, childbirth, a variety of health issues, and both chronic and acute diseases can begin to take their toll. Organs age, get damaged or displaced, creating difficulty with or unwanted urination. Worse yet, as we age cancer can attack vital organs and hopefully these can be cured. These conditions may be difficult to even talk about, creating embarrassing situations for their sufferers. When any of these problems arise, it is important to find an empathetic, caring doctor who is not only qualified but makes you feel comfortable and can treat all aspects of

your personal complaints. Doctor David DiPiazza is that doctor. Although many physicians refer patients to him, they also choose him to treat both their family members and themselves. Patients travel from all over Florida to see this highly respected doctor, boardcertified in both Urology and Urogynecology. His office is conveniently located at 2148 Duck Slough Blvd, Suite 102, New Port Richey, (Trinity), Florida. For his patients’ convenience, he accepts most major insurance programs. If you call the office (727 375 1975) to verify your insurance’s acceptance, the friendly office staff will be happy to assist you. If you are not familiar with the

term ‘board certified,” abms.org/board-certification, defines the process as: “demonstrates a physician’s exceptional expertise in a particular specialty and /or subspecialty of medical practice. The ABMS (American Board of Medical Specialties) Program for MOC (Maintenance of Certification) is a system of ongoing professional development and practice assessment improvement.” What this mean to you, the patient, is that Dr. DiPiazza has achieved the “gold standard” in his field. He has undergone rigorous testing and evaluation by his peers in not one but two specialties, Urology and Female Pelvic Medicine and See “DiPiazza” on page 26.

From The Editor Carla Selby

Hello September! This month marks the start of the academic year in many countries, not just in the U.S. In the Southern hemisphere, September 1st marks the beginning of the meteorological spring. I am an Astronomy and Astrology nerd, so for me, this month is pretty exciting. Meteor showers are expected to take place throughout the entire month of September to early October. So, if you’re into meteor showers as much as me, keep your telescopes ready, because it’s about to get lit! September is a marvelous month for swimming and partaking in water sports. The sea temperature is still amazingly high, averaging 84.2 Fahrenheit, which is as warm as the water surrounding Florida ever gets! So head out to the beaches and enjoy before it gets cold, rainy and those potential nasty Tropical Storms and Hurricanes start threatening us. Also, September 16th marks my

one year anniversary with my husband, Matt Selby. I want to take a minute to tell him I love him and thank you for a spectacular first year of marriage, and here’s to 100 more, or at least 80…Everyone knows I am the oldest one of the two so… And last but not least, I want to thank you all again…I know, I know, it seems to be a common theme on my Editorials lately, but hey… when did thanking people become a nuisance? So, in the spirits of being kind, I want to thank all of those people who reached out to me this past month and shared with me some amazing stories, some which will be featured in all of our issues of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles in the upcoming editions. Make sure you check them out! These are uplifting and positive stories from your own neighbors, your coworker’s brother in law, your best friend’s cousin’s aunt… these are stories from real members of your community that

are doing great things, and that truly deserve a chance to get featured so they can let everyone know about the wonderful impact they are making. If you have an amazing story that you’d want to share with us and the community, please, PLEASE reach out to me directly by emailing me at carla@nnlflorida.com Like I’ve said in my previous editorials, Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles is all about YOU… So if you feel you’re making a difference or are interested in making one, if you volunteer at a specific organization, a non-profit, a rescue shelter, or even if it’s only you…one person, trying to make a difference… I want to hear from you, so don’t be afraid to email me. I do enjoy reading your messages! I’ll leave you with these incredible words from Nelson Mandela, “We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in your hands to make a difference.”

SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: COLLEGE COMPARISONS By Dr. Wayne Adams FALL EXAM DATES: SAT: October 6, November 3, and December 1; ACT: October 27 and December 8. AS WE MOVE INTO THE FALL, many families are thinking about college with questions about where to go, costs, value, and impact on the future of students. One question that I always ask my new students is WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO TO COLLEGE? Most of the time, they give their “dream” school first, followed by several others as “likes” or as “backups”. So I thought parents and students would like to see this chart. YOU MAY BE SURPRISED AT THE LOW COSTS of the “ultimate dream schools” (Harvard, etc. in the “Top 25” colleges and universities in this country) because their full-cost prices per year are in excess of $50,000. Note: you can see the estimated costs for most schools at collegescoreboard.com, and by going to that school’s website and using their “cost calculator” or similar button. THERE ARE THREE REASONS the actual costs are so much

8

lower. First, most top schools have huge endowments that they are willing to invest in students. Second, most during the past three years have adopted a “no college debt at graduation” policy. And third, with grants and other assistance, they have “put their money where their mouths are!” Most of the Top 25’s admit students on a “need blind” basis and after admission assess the degree of need as the only eligibility criteria for financial assistance. On occasion, there are exceptions for athletic, academic, and other scholarships … but not often. THE FIVE KEY CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION are class standing (especially from a highly-rated high school, whether public or private), GPA, SAT and/or ACT scores, quality of college application essay (or essays), and additional activities. THE MAJOR DIFFICULTY FOR MOST FLORIDA STUDENTS BEING ADMITTED to an “ultimate dream school” is their SAT and/or ACT scores. Most know the first two criteria are class standing followed by GPA. Because most students and parents “selfscreen”, most of those with low standings and GPAs simply do not apply. Exam scores come next. Sadly,

For Ad Info 727-943-2946 • info@NNLFlorida.com

Florida is perceived as “dumbed down” by most academic communities outside the state. Yet a Florida student with a high score can be preferred because schools seek “geographic distribution”. Most of you know by now that my over-riding goal for my students is for them to have their best possible futures,

SEPTEMBER 2018

which includes doing their best on their SAT and/or ACT Exams. During our classes we talk about many things including what is needed for “ultimate dream schools” such as the college application essay and how to write one that will really stand out, and developing an outstanding strength that will show

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

admissions officers that the student is one with a high potential to help “change the world. SENIORS, enjoy your senior year while keeping your grades up and submitting college applications. Watch the deadlines, and learn how to write a stunning college application essay that will help you stand out and move ahead in considerations by admissions officers … rather than getting rejected at the outset. And I recommend you go for early acceptance, because more and more colleges are accepting up to half of their student bodies at this time. JUNIORS, keep doing well including on your PSAT, getting experience on the SAT and ACT Exams, and developing your “super strength” area for college admission during the year and over the summer. SOPHOMORES, start learning about possible colleges while focusing on grades, starting preparations for the SAT and ACT Exams (it’s not too early), enjoying high school, and doing your best. at 727-253-0639. Would love to talk with you. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve 200 – 350 points on the Writing, Reading, Writing and Essay, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to eight of the top ten universities in the country, eighteen of the top twenty-five, and many schools in Florida. These schools include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), University of Virginia, NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Air Force and Merchant Marine Service Academies, Penn State, Purdue, Ohio State, LSU, Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, FIU, New College of Florida, Stetson, and Julliard – Manhattan - New England - and Berkley Conservatories of Music. Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. This year, he also tutored three juniors who scored at the national merit finalist/semi-finalist levels on the most recent PSAT. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

KEYSTONE PREP HIGH SCHOOL Tucked away on the winding section of Gunn Highway that rolls past several sprawling farms in Odessa, is an extraordinary school that serves students from all over the Tampa Bay area. Some have said it is one of the best kept secrets in Tampa, but to the nearly seventy (and growing) families who know of Keystone Prep High School, it is an amazing resource that pulls together students, many of whom have learning differences stemming from ADHD, dyslexia, high functioning autism, and other challenges, in an educational learning community second to none. Engaging teens to become self-motivated learners is the core of Keystone’s strategy. A personalized learning environment, and a rigorous, engaging curriculum using instructional strategies to accommodate individual learning styles in a small

learning community works. The school’s mission speaks to its unique place Keystone Prep High School holds among peer institutions throughout the region. That mission is: To offer a different approach to high school, where students with unique

learning styles thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. The curriculum includes a fully array of educational offerings including dual enrollment opportunities, college preparatory classes, music, virtual classes, visual and fine arts, athletics, world studies, and

numerous other subjects. The school is led by an energetic and passionate head of school, Ms. P.J. Petrillo, who came to Keystone Prep High School two years ago. You can see her eyes sparkle and light up when she discusses the school. There is no

doubt when she starts talking about the teens who attend (she knows all of them individually), that her love of her students is what guides her work day in and day out! “To me, being a head of school is not about staying tucked away in a corner office. It’s about making sure each student reaches his or her potential and has the

opportunity to grow and develop into a young adult with a bright future ahead” The faculty are expert in their subject matter, but, perhaps more importantly, they are carefully selected for their energy, dynamism, knowledge about how to engage students, and their understanding of working with

students who may have learning challenges. The emphasis is on removing barriers, not lowering the bar, while providing a flexible learning environment that can be individually tailored to ensure each student has an educational experience that best meets his or her needs. Josh Boyle, a student at Keystone Prep, says, “I don’t have a favorite teacher. They are all amazing! But what I like the best about Keystone, is that my teachers are not just there to teach me in class, but to mentor me and help me with lots of different things. They really care about me.” If you would like to learn

more about the school, or arrange for a tour, the school is open all summer and has rolling admissions throughout the year. You can also reach the school by email at admissions@keystoneprep.org.

Tech Talk with Bob: Keyboard Shortcuts By Bob Dalles Keyboard shortcuts allow you to perform certain command functions that you most often do with the mouse. Fortunately, the Microsoft Windows User Interface provides multiple ways to execute commands. By pressing a specific combination of keys on your keyboard, you can maintain your keyboard prowess by not having to stop and reach for the mouse every time you want to execute a common command. The best way to understand this is to play along. Sit in front of your computer and perform the following keyboard shortcuts as I describe them. If you are not able to do that right now, then just read on and try it later. I am using a Windows 10 computer and the Microsoft “WordPad” application to demonstrate. Most Windows computers have the application “WordPad” installed on them. Search “WordPad” on your computer and then select it. WordPad should open

into a blank document ready for you to type. Now type your name. To print this document using the mouse, you would click the “File” menu (located at the upper left side of the screen). The menu opens and then you would click “Print” to open the “Print” dialogue box. Once you are in the “Print” dialogue box, you would usually click “Print” to print the document. If you want to save paper, click “Cancel” to abort the print command. Now let’s try it using the keyboard shortcut for the print command (Ctrl+P). Hold down the “Ctrl” key with your left hand and tap the “P” key one time with your right

hand. When the print dialogue box opens you may release the “Ctrl” key. If you look closely you will see that the “Print” command in the print dialogue box is highlighted. If you press the “Enter” key (on the right side of your keyboard) the document will print. Now here’s a new keystroke (“Esc”), the Escape key is located at the top left side of the keyboard. Tap it once and it will give you the same result as clicking the “Cancel” command in the print dialogue box. Some other keyboard shortcuts using the “Ctrl” key are: Crtl+O (the letter O, not the number zero) is the same as clicking the “File” menu and then selecting “Open” which presents the “Open” dialogue box which allows you to open another document. Remember how to abort the command? Tap the “Esc” key once. Ctrl+S (which is the same as clicking “File” then “Save”) presents the “Save” dialogue box which allows you to save a document. Ctrl+N (which is the same as clicking “File” menu and

selecting “New”) which creates a new blank document. Please note: If you have not saved the current document you have open, the “New” command will prompt you to save your current document first. Using Ctrl+P, Ctrl+S, Ctrl+O, Ctrl+N, and Ctrl+P can speed up your interaction when giving your computer commands. The “Esc” key will cancel these commands if you change your mind. Whether you use these keyboard shortcuts or not is completely up to you. I suggest you try them from time to time to see if you like them. Have a tech question? Email it to TechTalkTBNL@BobTheComputerGuy.NE T. Questions will be selected by the popularity of a topic and answered in this column. If you have a more urgent need or have a unique situation you may schedule an appointment with one of my Professionally Certified Technicians by calling 727-534-4000. Until next time, stay safe on the internet!

Now is the time! Must-Dos to Improve your Hurricane Safety The tropics are quiet now, but for how much longer? Even though forecasters have predicted a less than active hurricane season this year, we must all be prepared. The month of August sees more than three times the number of named storms as July, and almost double the number of June and July storms combined. Remember, it only takes one! The 1992 hurricane season produced only six named storms and one subtropical storm. However, one of those named storms was Hurricane Andrew. State Farm agent Gregg Schindler is reminding property owners in Tri County area that a little preparation can make a big

20

difference when it comes to safety and security during hurricane season. Gregg recommends the following easy tips to help homeowners protect themselves and their property: Review your insurance coverage. Make sure you have the right amount and type of insurance. Call or visit my office today. Create a home inventory. Make a list of your possessions and their estimated value. Protect your property. Stock plywood and materials you may need to board up windows. Move garbage cans and other large objects inside the house or garage. Secure boats and cars. Have an evacuation plan.

Before the hurricane, decide what you will do. Find out the location of evacuation shelters. Determine if you will ride out the storm in your home (if local authorities permit you to

stay), or establish a safe place inland. Plan an escape route. Tell relatives where you will be. Put together an emergency kit. The kit should include basics such as

“DiPiazza” Continued from page 1 Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS) (which is the board specialy for Urogynecology). Few, if any surgeons in the Tampa Bay area, have his expertise, experience or dual certifications; he is the only one in Pasco county with both board certifications. “Never a dull moment” is an apt description for a day in the life of Dr. DiPiazza. Mornings may involve diagnosing and treating men’s issues like prostate, kidney and related cancers or BPH (prostate gland enlargement). In his Urogynecology role, he might be helping female patients with OAB (over active bladders), urinary continence, or dropped bladders and vaginal prolapse. Childbirth targets these organs and can result in a weakening of pelvic, vaginal and rectal muscles and tissue. He is

26

often called upon to correct the mistakes or problems arising from prior surgeries that may cause issues or have failed. Even Dr. DiPiazza’s surgical solutions for some of these conditions are as minimally invasive as possible to reduce post-surgical discomfort and improve recovery times. He uses both medical and surgical solutions to resolve his patients’ complaints. His improved surgical outcomes and shortened recovery times are the result of employing robotic surgery when called for. Dr. DiPiazza was clinically trained and was the first surgeon in Pasco county to employ the Da Vinci Surgical System, robotic surgery. Using the robotic surgical system to assist him in performing even the most complex surgery, Dr. DiPiazza’s skillful hands control the entire process with laser-like precision, making smaller, more easily-

healed incisions, unlike traditional surgery with its wider, more invasive operation fields and larger, longer-healing surgical incisions. Dr. DiPiazza’s academic and medical background speaks for itself. After graduating with undergraduate honors (cum laude) from Cornell University, his impressive residency resume includes Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey and the prestigious Princeton Medical Center. If you are passed your childbearing and rearing days, and your husband is considering a vasectomy, Dr. DiPiazza can provide the ideal solution with a scalpel and needle-free vasectomy to ease both your mind and body. Listen to what some of Dr. DiPiazza patients on healthgrade.com had to say about him. The site rates physicians in several categories:

trustworthiness, explains condition(s) well, answers questions, and time well spent. In all categories, Dr. DiPiazza received an “excellent” rating. His office and staff performance, in the additional categories of scheduling, office environment, and staff friendliness, were equally impressive with another “excellent” rating and an average wait time of only 10 to 15 minutes. Patient online remarks were just as complimentary: “The first time I met with Dr DiPiazza, I was afraid and confused! I was literally in shock because I had just received a diagnosis of kidney cancer! The oncologist that I went to immediately said Dr. DiPiazza is the only one. I’d recommend him for your situation. As I talked with him, I became calm and so reassured that I would be alright.” Another patient wrote: “From the moment that I met

him, he was caring, and I felt completely safe and assured that I had a great doctor.” If you need a qualified urologist or urogynecologist, Dr. DiPiazza and his caring staff are here to help. “Dogism”- Continued from page 1 have experience competing in dog competitions. Although Renee and Jason enjoyed the experience of training their dogs competitively, they found it to be demanding and timeconsuming. As a result, Dogism was inspired to be a place where everyone can benefit from the experience and fun of training without the pressure of competition. Renee explains, “The primary reason for all of this was just to have all the training and agility at a fun level. I like dogs to have fun and to do things without the pressure of competition and training.” Renee and Jason share their mission to, “Have a place for people to have fun with their dogs.” With more than 7 types of classes available for dogs and owners alike, it is all the fun without the pressure. Dogism is not just a facility, it is a way of life. It is a real community of dog lovers who come to make sure their dogs are not only well-trained, but also happy. Teresa S. elucidates, “Dawn, our miniature poodle, loves coming to Dogism for training class, to visit her friends and to run around on the padded floor in the training/play area! Renee has been a wonderful trainer and has been able to offer many alternative methods until we find what works for Dawn! She is a very special lady! If you are looking for the best training class in town, stop by and meet Renee at Dogism!”

Learn various tricks just for fun, or work towards the different levels of titles offered by DMWYD. It covers everything you need to know to care for your first pup: potty training, crate training, mouthing, chewing, appropriate toys, and more! Later, there is the AKC S.T.A.R. We are never left alone, and there is ample opportunity to make friends.” Linda P. explains, “We have been taking our dog Missy, to the daycare at Dogism for the 3 months we are in Florida. We found her as a stray and we took her here for the socialism with other dogs. This has really been great for her and we have seen so much improvement in her since she has been going. I would highly recommend Dogism to anyone that is looking for a very professional and caring place to take their dogs to.” Gideon continues, “Not only do we get to socialize with one another, but we also receive that basic training

What you have to know BEFORE you GO SOLAR! With all innovation there’s skepticism, especially when something has relatively been the same since the beginning. Change is always scary no matter what the change is; that’s just human nature but paying the traditional power company for your energy consumption is something that’s changing. As a homeowner you finally have options when it comes to your electric bill. Here’s what you need to know if you’re thinking of switching to Solar!

1. NOT ALL SOLAR COMPANIES ARE CREATED EQUAL This is a big one and I could go on and on but I’ll keep it short. When pricing out solar, make sure the company has an in-house team of installers. The license holder is responsible for the workmanship for a minimum of 10 years! That means if anything fails as far as the installed product, the company who installed it is responsible. This includes roof leaks due to a failed product or installation

30

practice. If a company is subcontracting the installation you have a much tougher time trying to file a claim, especially if the “Solar Company” who subbed out the work is nowhere to be found a few years down the line.

your payment isn’t going towards anything you own. It’s just like renting. It’s not an asset to you. When you rent something it’s like paying 100% interest. It goes to nothing to your benefit. Think about that next time you pay your electric bill.

2. ELIMINATING YOUR ELECTRIC BILL DOESN’T MEAN SOLAR IS FREE!

3. SOLAR WILL SAVE YOU MONEY, AND THE PRICE IS THE PRICE UNTIL IT’S PAID OFF

The Government is offering a 30% tax credit incentive through the end of this year for sure but that’s the only FREE portion. Some people see $0 down or out of pocket and think that means FREE but that just refers to start up costs. The goal is to create a system that net 0’s out your current electric bill. To simplify this, the Solar Energy system is designed to create enough energy to cover your consumption use and in turn, eliminates your charge from the traditional energy company. Currently, if you aren’t producing your own energy with Solar, you might as well just light your money on fire because

For Ad Info 727-943-2946 • info@NNLFlorida.com

The cost of the system broken into monthly payments is cheaper in month number 1 than your average electric bill currently. You save money right away, and as we touched on before, your payment goes directly to something you own. The payment also locks in and never goes up. Once the system is paid off, you don’t pay anything and your system likely has plenty of years of life left.

4. NEVER CHOOSE A COMPANY THAT CHARGES A MONEY DOWN FEE

SEPTEMBER 2018

The panels go up and the only cost you pay is your monthly payment from there on out. This price includes everything including the labor. DON’T let somebody charge you an upfront fee unless you are paying for the system in cash and are foregoing the payment plan. As mentioned above, $0 money down, $0 out of pocket deals that most Solar companies’ offer refers to the initial setup.

5. WHAT SHOULD YOU SEE IN YOUR CONTRACT? The contract should clearly define the financing, ownership and performance expectations. NEVER sign a contract with a company that doesn’t include these important factors.

Call the Solar Professionals of Florida at 813-750-7770 to find out more.
