The Future of Our Website People search the internet for businesses, products, services, news, etc. When they search for something you offer or specifically for your business, you want to show up—and not just show up— you want to look good and appealing. Looking good is important because your website is often your first impression you give potential customers. A website is one of your first points of contact with your customers and target audience, in addition to the other mediums used to advertise. Have you checked our Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles website recently? If so, you may have noticed that, 1) The site was a little outdated 2) A lot of the links were not working properly at times 3) The website actually went down for a considerable amount of time 4) Navigating through it and finding old articles was extremely complicated and almost impossible 5) Overall it was not very user friendly I want to personally apologize in the name of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles for any trouble or inconvenience this may have caused you. As someone who studied Fine Arts in college and has a Masters in Education with a concentration in Web Design and Instructional Technology, our website was not something I ever felt very proud of. It was designed many years ago and I had been meaning to give the entire site a “facelift,” for quite some time now. After our server collapsed and our website went down, I personally tried hard to fix all the issues the website was having, but it was beyond my web programming experience. So I reached out to an old friend, who is a very experienced web programmer and java script coder and had him check out the site for us and let me know what could be done. What my friend explained to me was a little complicated and not easy to digest, especially if languages like php and java script are not something you’re familiar with. See, our website nnlflorida.com was built many, many years ago on a CMS (Control Management System) Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

platform that is currently outdated and cannot be “updated” because the software company who created this platform sadly went under, we cannot get a newer version or reach out to them for support. On top of that, our server collapsed due to the overwhelming amount of information we’ve uploaded throughout the many years we’ve been in business. Even though we’ve bought 9 different databases and we’re confident they would hold up all the content effectively, our hosting company completely failed us, and for that, we apologize. We’ve filed about 25 different support tickets with them, but they have been less than helpful in fixing these issues, leaving us with the only choice to delete many stories that were over 5 years old. We fought against this, as we did not want to lose stories we wrote years ago, because every single story is important to us, and we feel every article had something beneficial for the community. With the help of my programming colleague we’ve managed to save almost all articles, and we will be transferring this data to a brand new server, and we’re definitely using a different hosting company that will provide better products and better service, which in turn will provide you, our readers, a better web experience. Yes… We’re starting from scratch! Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles will soon have a brand new domain name and a brand new website that will be built in a current CMS and on a brand new, modern platform that will make our site feel more 2018 and not so 2008. I am working day and night on this project to ensure nothing like what happened with nnlflorida.com happens again. Again, I apologize for any troubles you may have experienced using our website. All I can say, for now, is that I am pretty excited about this new project, and I feel truly happy about how the new website is looking so far. I am proud of it, and I truly hope you’ll enjoy it and find it easy to navigate. I look forward to being able to share our new domain name with all of you and have you enjoy a much faster and better web experience while reading our stories. We will continue to upload all articles from our 7

publications, as well as uploading all digital issues for your convenience. We will also offer an online calendar of events, monthly recipes, local sports news, featured restaurants and so much more! Please stay tuned to the launch of our new site. I cannot give you a specific date on when it will be ready, but I am hoping that we will be able to go live, at least with a soft version of it, within the next 4 weeks. In the meantime, please reach out to me or our manager at info@nnlflorida.com if you have any questions regarding any of our stories, if you need a brand new Media Kit or if you’re interested in advertising with us on print or in our brand new website. Also, please email me directly at carla@nnlflorida.com if you have any local community stories that you want to share with us and the rest of our readers. As always, thank you for your support and readership, and thanks for your patience and understanding as we finalize this big project.

Hair By P.D. Now at Hairsmith Beauty Salon and Barbershop By Carla Selby If you enjoy a good laugh, great conversation, affordable prices and happen to love the Steelers by any chance, you don't need to look anywhere else to get your next haircut other than Hair by P.D. No, nobody from the "Police Department" will be in charge of styling your locks… Hair by P.D. stands for "Hair by Pittsburgh Donna," and trusts us when we say… if you haven't met Donna yet, you're definitely missing out on one of the most experienced and entertaining hair professionals in the hair industry. Just whatever you do, don't try to convince her that the Steelers are "just a football team," and don't tell us we didn't warn you! Donna Montagnino has been in business for over 33 years! The only thing outweighing her talent is her personality and undying love for anything Pittsburgh, particularly… you guessed that right… the Steelers. "If you're a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, you'll enjoy your experience, for sure!" says Barry S. "If you're a thrill seeker, it's a wild ride, but worth the excitement!" Specializing in cuts, styles, and color, Donna has gone through extensive training and has mastered virtually every hairstyle possible for men, women or children. From bangs to layers, to stylish new bobs; Donna Montagnino is your girl! Providing a completely personalized hair experience in her new location inside "Hairsmith beauty salon and barbershop,” over at 5319 Ehrlich Road, Pittsburgh Donna is eager to meet new clients and happy to style some of her many regulars. "Donna has been doing my hair for over 20 years!" says Joan M. "Once you meet a hair stylist that you can truly trust, you never let her go! Donna always does a great job on my hair and her prices are the best." Hairsmith Beauty Salon and Barbershop is locally owned and operated by the Alvarez Family, who bought the place from its original owners a couple of years ago. The Salon is a staple in the community since it’s been in business for over 30 years! Almost as long as the amount of years Donna’s been cutting hair! Donna does kids cuts too! Donna on board. “Donna is exactly the type of hair stylist we were looking for,” says Jack. “We couldn’t be happier to have her working here along with our daughter Emily.” Emily Alvarez, Evelyn and Jack’s daughter, is a multilingual young hair stylist at the Hairsmith Salon, and enjoys working side-by-side Donna. “I seriously love Miss Donna, she always makes us laugh,” says Emily. “She is upbeat, funny and truly talented. I am learning a lot from her and definitely having a blast!” Emily, who speaks English, Spanish, and German, has over 2 years of experience as a hairstylist and makeup artist. So if you need a trim, color or to get dolled up before a big event, Emily will be happy to help, and in any language you choose! When it comes to color, there is nothing Donna shies away from. Looking to brighten your brown locks with some reddish tones? Or maybe getting some partial golden highlights for the summer? Donna has you covered! With clients from every age range looking for completely opposite styles, she's been able to tackle extremely different requests with incredible results, time after time. So whether you're just looking to cover up some of those gray hairs, or you're into rainbow colored hair, this talented and joyful Steelers’ fan is whom you want to go see.

"I love short wispy haircuts, commonly known as a 'pixie cut,' and I love doing my colors with some extra highlights," says Donna. "Highlights create volume believe it or not. A little bleach creates added body and roughs up the hair cuticle so it's not so 'slippery.' Basically, a godsend for anyone whose hair lies flat and won't hold a volume style." Do you have a little one (or two, or three) in need of a hair trim? Donna understands that kids and parents want and need something completely different when it comes to their haircut experience. Asking three year-olds to remain calm for more than 5 minutes can be quite challenging, but fear not! Donna will make sure your little one is as comfortable as possible, while making the experience as entertaining as possible. She truly has a gift with people of all ages, and it doesn't take long for anyone to notice how special she truly is. Both, Donna and Emily, offer enticing specials throughout the week, including a men's special on Mondays, where men can come in and get a haircut and shampoo for only $10. Wednesdays are for the ladies, with haircuts, shampoo and light drying for only $13!!! You simply cannot find these types of specials and prices anywhere else. "We make it very simple so people can remember the specials; Men Mondays and Women Wednesdays," says Donna. "We can do it all!" Both Donna and the Alvarez family want to take this opportunity to thank the Carrollwood community for their support and hope to see you soon at the Hairsmith Beauty Salon and Barbershop, where you’ll be treated like family… and remember… “Here we go Steelers, here we go!" Hair by P.D. is located inside the Hairsmith beauty salon and barbershop, at 5319 Ehrlich Rd, Tampa, Fl 33625. Hours of operation are: Monday-Friday from 10:00am to 7:00pm and Saturdays from 10:00am to 4:00pm. To reach Donna directly call her at 813-464-1388. TECH TALK with Bob the Computer Guy By Bob Dalles

Greetings Friends… My name is Bob Dalles, better known as Bob The Computer Guy. My goal is to help my readers better understand computer systems, wired and wireless networks, information technology (IT) devices like phones and pads; and most importantly, keeping you as safe as possible when you interact with the internet and other networks. A little bit about me. I want you to know that you are dealing with an individual who draws on decades of experience and sincerely wants to share this knowledge with you. When I say decades I am not talking about only twenty-

some years, as much as I hate to admit it, were looking more closely at forty years. My computer experience goes back to the latter half of the 1970’s before the surge of the personal computers industry. Remember computer punch cards? If you don’t, then good for you my friends, you are “soooo” lucky. Compared to

today’s methods of interacting with computers you would probably not be a big fan of punch cards. Even if you enjoy the novelty of playing around with older technology, you would quickly get tired of the tedium of using computer punch cards on a daily basis. In addition to my approximately forty-some years of technology experience, I have owned computer consulting corporations since 1995 and for the last ten years I have also been an IT Instructor for a well-known technical college. I continue to teach on a regular basis and own and operate my computer corporation on a daily basis. I want this column to not only be my column but our

column. On a regular basis, I will provide you with topics I hope you will find interesting. However, most importantly, I would love for you to submit questions on IT topics that interest you. Thank you for taking the time to read this and getting to know me better. Have a tech question? Email it to TechTalkTBNL@BobTheComputerG uy.NET. Questions will be selected by the popularity of a topic and answered in this column. If you have a more urgent need or have a unique situation you may schedule an appointment with one of my Professionally Certified Technicians by calling 727534-4000. Until next time, stay safe on the internet!

Two Young Artists Making Tampa Bay Look Good By Carla Selby What do you get when you combine a couple of extremely talented, young artists and some of Tampa Bay’s most beautiful scenery? An award-winning music video with an exceptional catchy beat that is exposing the entire world to the beauty of our city! Musician Johnny Maio and Videographer Caleb Oosterling, both 22, joined forces and produced an exceptional music video titled “Hometown” which showcases many of the sites and scenes of Tampa, all to an upbeat, infectious original song, written by Maio himself. The collaborative effort recently awarded these two artists the title of “Best Music Video” at the “Intendence Film Festival” in Denver, on June 10, 2018. Johnny Maio, a multiinstrumentalist singer/songwriter, moved to Tampa from Chicago with his musically-inclined family in 1997, when he was only 2 years old. Johnny's

14

love for music and dance developed early in his life and can be partially attributed to his parents' support. “I started taking Suzuki piano lessons at age 3. My parents always encouraged me and helped me find the right piano teacher, so I didn’t get bored and learned the styles that inspired me,” said Jonny. At only 6 years old, little Johnny admittedly fell madly in love with the “Riverdance” video and decided to take Irish Dance lessons, which proudly awarded him 5th place on a national Irish dance competition. Johnny’s passion for the arts continued to grow through the years, and the same musical passion seems to run in the Maio Family. “My dad plays classical flute, bagpipes and Irish tin whistle. My mom was a traveling folksinger when she met my dad on Mackinac Island, Michigan. He was the fifer at the fort, and she was singing in a hotel,” Johnny said. His sisters also share the Maio musical gene; his older sister plays the cello and Johnny’s twin sister plays the harp. “We play Irish

music together as a family around St. Patrick’s day,” added Johnny. I will try to stay in touch with Johnny and find out where they’ll be playing next year so I can personally witness the Irish musical magic of the Maio family. I’ll make sure to keep you posted as well! Johnny Maio, who admires early jazz guys like Fats Waller and James P. Johnson, and other musicians like Vince Guaraldi and Harry Connick Jr. graduated from the USF School of Music in 2017 and has worked as a Busch Gardens musician for the past three years. When asked which instruments he played, Johnny said “I play piano and keyboards, and since working at Busch Gardens I’ve also learned to play and perform on guitar, bass, and drums… and I also get to sing there!” Wow, I don’t think there’s anything this talented musician cannot do! Caleb Oosterling, a Tampa native, began his award-winning videography career while a student at Wiregrass Ranch High School. He and wife,

Musician Johnny Maio Gabrielle, proudly own and operate Oosterling Videography, where they also offer professional photography services. “Caleb and I started producing music videos to my original songs last year,” said Johnny, who in the manner of Owl City’s Adam

Johnny Maio, a multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter, moved to Tampa from Chicago with his musically-inclined family in 1997, when he was only 2 years old Young, played all the instruments and recorded the Hometown song in his Carrollwood bedroom on his Mac computer. After a few bedroom recording sessions, Johnny contacted Caleb and decided to hit the road together to capture some of the beauty of our beloved city of Tampa Bay. Next, the Oosterlings worked their production and editing magic in their local home studio. The resulting music video is

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

reaping widespread praise and attention, most recently in the form of film festival accolades. Less than one month since its release, Hometown has been named “Film of the Month” for May 2018 at New York’s Oasis Short Film Festival and like previously stated, was featured at “Intendence Film Festival” where it won “Best Music Video.” Hometown has also been accepted by international festivals, so worldwide audiences will see the

beautiful lights of Curtis Hixon Park, the Bull Fountain of USF, The Florida Aquarium, the gigantic Bucs flag, the Lightning bolts, the lovely Hillsborough Bay, the Kumba roller coaster at Busch Gardens, and many other unique local treasures. Maio and Oosterling are happy the video is bringing attention to the Tampa area, as the guys are both proud of their city. “One of the festivals asked us what our budget was for the music

video. Their lowest category was $5000.00. All it really cost was a tank of gas and about $35.00 in Chick-Fil-A drive through,” said Maio. Truly a labor love from two very talented young artists, dedicated to their Hometown, Tampa. Oosterling and Maio are currently working on two new videos. “One’s an original jazz tune called ‘I’ve Been Thinking About You’ where I’ll be playing all the instruments and tap dancing with my friend, Ashlyn Bolton, who runs a tap company called Rhythm and Sole,” said Maio. “The other video is for an Irish original song. I’ll be Irish Dancing in that one,” he added. Oosterling and Maio are already scouting different local spots and coming up with original ideas to showcase our beautiful city again in these two upcoming videos. So would Johnny ever move away? “Tampa has a lot to offer and it’s a great place to grow up. I love this city and can’t imagine ever leaving for a long time,” said Jonny. “However, I am curious about Ireland because of our musical heritage. I believe I’d enjoy spending time there.” To conclude this uplifting story, I’ll leave you with Johnny’s own words of wisdom to other young aspiring musicians: “It’s ok to be inspired by other people, but be sure to find your own style and be true to your own inspiration. If you try to copy other musicians’ fads and trends you won’t be saying anything new and you won’t be true to your own passions.” Please make sure to check out the video “Hometown” on youtube whenever you get a chance, subscribe to Johnny’s channel and show some support for our local talent.

Three Strikes and You’re Out! By Tom Bostock

“Strike one! Strike two! Strike three! You’re out!” That has unfortunately been the refrain that the Tampa Bay Rays fans have been hearing from umpires for most of this year. It seems that, until they learn to win some of those one run games, the Rays 33-39 record will continue on a downhill spiral. But all is not lost. Thanks to the perennial cellar dwelling Orioles and their abysmal 20 and 50 record, the Rays have managed to keep out of last place in the American League East. While the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Socks seem to buy and sell players with little impact to team performance, reloading each year, the Rays keep shooting blanks, trading fan favorites like Evan Longoria, who unfortunately broke a finger while playing with his new team the San Francisco Giants, and stalwart Ben Zobrist, affectionately nicknamed “Zorilla,” starting over again with an influx of new players, primarily from their minor league system. With a break even record of 5-5 in their last 10 games, our youngster Rays seem to be treading water. With one more loss than the Toronto Blue Jays who has an almost identical record of 33 and 38, it’s going to be an uphill battle to respectability.

18

JULY 2018

According to cbssports.com, all is not lost. All star golden glove outfielder, Kevin Kermaier, who injured his thumb (torn ligament) and was languishing on the 60-day disabled list for more than two months is finally back in the field and is scheduled to play against the Houston Astros. That should be great news for all Tampa Bay Rays fans and give a much-needed lift to the young, struggling team. I’m not holding out too much hope that his bat will be heard from until he gets his timing back but just having him healthy should be a boost for team morale. It certainly will be for all Tampa Bay Rays fans! As bad as current performance has been, there have been several “lights at the end of the tunnel” and they are not oncoming trains. Mlb.com reported that Blake Snell struck out seven batters in the first three innings during his last outing against the New York Yankees. Unfortunately, his command deserted him the following inning, leading to four Yankee runs. Again, the Rays bats were silent. Right hand pitcher, the recipient of not one but two Tommy Johns surgeries, Nate Eovaldi, who had not appeared in the majors since August 10, 2016, continues to do a yeomanlike job for the Rays while veteran starter, Chris Archer continues to struggle. The big bat of C.J.

Cron is all but non-existent of late; perhaps designated hitter role will give him the impetus to succeed. Firecracker third baseman, Matt Duffy continues to shine. He gets on base almost as much as the grounds crew. His productive bat is making its

presence felt at critical times during the games and if catcher, Wilson Ramos, is not in consideration for all star status, something is wrong with the voting system. Pitcher Romo’s slider and curve ball seem to have a mind of their own and opposing batters are flummoxed with his

darting, twisting offerings. Tampabay.rays.mlb.com reports that the Rays depth chart is beginning to take on the appearance of a list of the walking wounded. Pitcher Chris Archer is among the wounded, on the tenday disabled list with a left abdominal strain. Arroyo is on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain. Faria is on the was

transferred to the 60-day disabled list. These are just a few of the Rays players who are not 100%. It begs the question if conditioning might be an issue. Everyone knows that the Tampa Bay Rays want a new stadium. The present one is outdated and located in an area that is not conducive to increased attendance. Rumors abound

about a new location but if the Rays are expecting financial assistance from state government, especially democratic support, they shouldn’t hold their collective breaths. Steve Contorno of Tampabay.com, in an April 19th article reported that “the Tampa Bay Rays shouldn’t bother asking for money to help build a new ballpark in Ybor City.

For Ad Info 813-928-6124 • info@NNLFlorida.com

Why? Apparently, baseball and politics don’t mix, especially where taxpayer money is concerned. During a gubernatorial debate, three of the four democratic candidates for governor, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, former Miami Beach Mayor Phillip Levine and Orlando businessman Chris King were all in agreement: no taxpayer money to help any professional sports team finance stadiums! If the grinch stole Christmas, these grinches are trying to steal professional baseball. Steve cited a the single voice of reason, former congresswoman Gwen Graham who said we should “absolutely” support public investment in sports teams because “the bring us together.” She pointed to a pot of money that is used as business incentives for businesses to grow or relocate or “Visit Florida, the state’s advertising arm.” You go girl and go Rays!

Florida is known as the fishing capital of the World! I've been fishing since I was old enough to hold a rod and reel and have been a fishing guide here in Tampa Bay for almost 10 years. Through my many trips and expeditions during the past decade, I've been able to

accumulate some of the best fishing spots from Pasco to Hernando, even down to the Florida Keys and some great places at the east coast, as well. I specialize in fishing the Gulf of Mexico waters, from my hometown of Tarpon Springs to the beautiful Clearwater. I grew

up here and have put in countless hours studying the migration patterns and habits of the fish in these local waters. Speaking of migrating fish, Tarpon have invaded our waters in thicker numbers than I've seen in over a decade! Tarpon are known as a "bucket list" fish Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

Commemorate your catch with a fiberglass replica release mount. Ask Captain Matt for details! to some and an absolute addiction to others. I fall into the latter category. Ever since I caught my first Tarpon in my parents' backyard as a kid, I've been fascinated with their prehistoric look and raw power. There's not much that rivals a Tarpon's strength or their acrobatics. I've been fortunate enough to catch them on just about every form of tackle,

from lightweight spinning reels to stout Grouper digging gear in local passes, to Fly-fishing them in knee-deep water. "Captain Matt IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Unbelievable fishing experience for my Brother's first ever Saltwater trip! The pinfish we used for bait was probably in the water no longer than 10 seconds before we jumped our

first fish. We ended the day with 3 Tarpon to the boat and 5 total bites. Our biggest Tarpon was over 120 pounds! My Brother has never been so happy in his life! Matt is the best!" - Tammy I love getting anglers of all ages and skill levels on their dream fish. It's not always a guarantee when targeting a specific species, but with my experience and local knowledge

mixed with a little bit of lady luck, you'll be battling a monster fish of your own. We catch Tarpon through the end of July so if it's a Tarpon you're going after, call me today! I only have a few dates left! Captain Matt Selby Epic Sport Fishing 727-253-5893

“Weight Loss” Continued from page 1 loss clinics are in Wesley Chapel, FL., Lake Geneva, and Waukesha, Wisconsin. Their prices have not increased since they began the medical weight loss practice. Dr. Jachimek and her husband are both Chiropractic physicians, and have those clinics here and in Spring Hill. So, they also treat patients that are in pain from accident injuries, and have every day neck or back pain! Their medical weight loss program combines pharmaceutical appetite suppressant medication, fat burning injections and pills, and a clinically proven diet with medical doctor and nursing support and counseling to help their patients reach their “target” weight goals. This physician supervised program helps those who have

before tried and failed to lose unwanted pounds. Dr. Gail says, “We opened the clinic because I was entering menopause and gaining weight. When I asked my primary physician, as well as my doctor friends, for help, I got extremely rude responses. I was told to “push away from the table”. Dr. Gail does not want her patients to go through the same degrading experience.

At the time, Dr. Gail was living on chicken and salad, and practicing level 3 kickboxing. She says, “I had been thin as a young woman, so I also assumed that anyone over weight deserved to

be overweight because they were ‘eating chips in front of the television,’ etc.” When the unexplained weight gain happened to her, she was then convinced that other factors were

involved. She wanted an answer. Determined to learn more, Dr. Jachimek joined the ASBP (American Society of Bariatric Physicians) and went to their symposiums for further education and tools. She discovered that there are many contributing factors to weight gain - not just your diet. Some of the major contributing factors included hormonal imbalances, thyroid issues, environmental toxins, autoimmune disease, type 2 diabetes, etc. It was then that she opened the main clinic in Tampa to help people dealing with the same frustrating weight gain frustration she had faced. They have since opened 3 more clinics in Florida and Wisconsin. “At Medical Weight Loss, LLC, we have medical doctors, as well as nurse practitioners, that have been treating our patients successfully for years, so that the root cause of these problems can be addressed. Our registered nurses and supportive staff are there for you to help you every step of the way.” Medical weight loss plans are not new, and many are similar, but those programs usually involve significant upcharges and hidden fees. This factor also makes it more affordable, because you don’t have to buy special foods, or cook separate dinners if you have a family.” Under the supervision of their medical doctors, patients can drop 20 to 30 pounds in the first month. Dr. Jachimek said that it is common to see 5-10 pounds dropped in the first week. “We have had patients that have lost 17 pounds in their first week, as well as patients that have lost over a hundred pounds on our program”, says Dr. Jachimek. Accountability is also a major part of the program. Keeping the patients safe and on track, their nurses evaluate, and treat patients weekly to provide support and give suggestions on how to reach and maintain their target weight. Dr. Jachimek stresses that there are no price surprises at Medical Weight Loss, 269SLIM. The initial visit is $195 and weekly visits are just $55. That’s it! This is what you have been waiting for! An inexpensive, easy and successful way to lose the unwanted pounds that have made you miserable for years.

Jachimek’s 269-SLIM program is different. Her program is focused on the long-term results, meaning, not only will the process safely take off your weight during the active phase of the program, but also prevent the pounds from returning during the “maintenance phase”...(which is free)! This is no diet trend – This is looking at your medical history, evaluating your EKG, bloodwork and lifestyle. Then, their doctors propose a plan for you, and prescribe appropriate pharmaceutical appetite suppressant medication, fat burning injections, vitamin therapy and fat burning supplements. “The program is simple, inexpensive and easy to follow. We give you a large list of foods to buy/choose from,” says Dr. Jachimek. “The program is easy, because it is food bought in the grocery store, (no special foods

“We had a fantastic experience with Cornerstone,” says Kim R. “We had a 14-yearold unit, that by the looks of it had never been serviced in its life. They answered all my questions, even the dumb ones. . . Not only did they install a great system and clean the ducts, but they also put down a new concrete slab, painted inside the air handler closet, cleaned up after themselves and much more. I especially liked that I was emailed every time someone new was coming to my home so I knew exactly who to expect. Their customer service is incredible. I called on a Saturday to the emergency service and was called immediately back and was scheduled for our install within hours. I will be using them again for sure.”
