Today’s Foster Parents Today’s foster families are skilled, valued partners who parent, nurture and advocate for children in their care, and who mentor and support the child’s birth parents. They leave lifelong impressions on children in their care and are privileged to positively impact the futures of children and families in our community. Today’s foster parents are business owners, soccer moms and retirees. By day, they teach school, sell real estate and work construction. By night, they read bedtime stories, help with homework and give hugs. They work as partners with birth parents, case managers, guardian ad litems, schools and judges to nurture, love and advocate for children in their care. Steps to Foster Get started by calling 866-2330790 to sign up for a free Orientation. Get information at an orientation that will explain what is needed to become a foster parent and answer your questions. Once you return a few

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

forms, the next step is training. Get trained at no cost to you with classes called Professional Parenting. This 24-hour course will teach you about children in foster care, grief and loss, the professional team, and much more. Get licensed to ensure that you, your family, and your home are prepared and safe. This will include a home study and background screening of all household members at no cost to you. If favorable, your home will be licensed to accept children into your care. A home study process is required. A favorable home has enough bedroom space for each foster child. They may share a bedroom with your child or another foster child of the same gender, but must have a bed of their own. A foster child may not share a bedroom with any adult nor can the adult move out of their bedroom and sleep on the couch to make room. Foster parents can own or rent their residences, so long as the environ-

ment is clean and safe. During the home study process, you will be asked to have a health inspection done in your home to make sure it is free of potential dangers. It must have working smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, and pets must be vaccinated and not present a danger to children. Foster parents must be healthy and emotionally stable and are asked to complete a physical exam or provide medical clearances. Thorough background screenings are conducted on all prospective foster families, including Abuse Registry, local criminal and federal criminal clearances (fingerprinting). Background screenings and child abuse clearances are required for all household members. Foster parents must have adequate income to meet their own family’s needs. Foster parents are given stipends called “board rates” for the substitute care they provide; however, the monthly board rate is not income. Foster parents can be single, married, divorced or in a domestic partnership. (Please see page 4 for informational meeting dates.)

Wildfire Preparedness Wildfires are a natural part of our beautiful landscape, so preparing our homes and families for wildfire is essential. Florida is currently experiencing elevated fire conditions. East Lake Fire District Firefighters would like to remind all residents, especially those in the wildland/urban interface, that creating and maintaining defensible space around their homes is critical. Firefighters urge property owners to not delay in preparing

8

their family and home for wildfire. Take the following actions now: • CLEAR leaves and other vegetative debris from roofs, gutters, porches, and decks. This helps prevent embers from igniting your home. • REMOVE dead vegetation and other items from under your deck or porch, and within 10 feet of the house. • REMOVE flammable materials (wood piles, propane tanks)

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • info@NNLFlorida.com

within 30 feet of your home’s foundation and outbuildings, including garages and sheds. If it can catch fire, don’t let it touch your house, deck or porch. • Wildfire can spread to tree tops. PRUNE trees so the lowest branches are 6 to 10 feet from the ground. • KEEP your lawn hydrated and maintained. If it is brown, cut it down to reduce fire intensity. Dry grass and shrubs are fuel for wildfire. • Don’t let debris and lawn cuttings linger. DISPOSE of these items quickly to reduce fuel for fire. If a wildfire should start, always

JUNE 2017

contact your local Fire District, even if you have put the fire out. Firefighters would like to ensure the fire is completely extinguished and will not reignite later in the day or overnight. Firefightes are always here to help! For more information about the wildland/urban interface and protecting your home from wildfires, visit the Florida Forest Service website and review the Firewise Communities information at http://www.freshfromflorida.com/ Divisions-Offices/Florida-ForestService/For-Communities/FirewiseCommunities .

Heartwood Preserve: Choose a Final Resting Place to Nourish and Protect Natural Florida By Kim Thomas Walking along the pathways of Heartwood Preserve, you’ll find a completely natural landscape. It’s far enough from major roadways that if you are quiet and still – you hear nothing but the sounds of nature. Open to the public, Heartwood Preserve offers walking trails, bird-watching opportunities and tranquility. Much more than that, Heartwood Preserve contains one of only two conservation cemeteries in Florida. For many, the idea of a completely green burial is appealing. There is no embalming and the caskets or shrouds are simple and perishable. Everything is completely organic and returns to the earth naturally. Choosing a green burial at Heartwood Preserve enables one to nourish nature rather than occupy

space in a conventional cemetery. Located in Trinity, just on Starkey Boulevard, Heartwood Preserve Conservation Cemetery opened early November 2016 and was founded by Laura Starkey, who is carrying on a family legacy. Laura’s paternal grandfather, Jay B. Starkey pioneered

the family’s conservation efforts when he donated and sold a majority of the family’s land to create the Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park, which is now an 18,000-acre wilderness preserve that lies adjacent to Heartwood Preserve. The whole of Heartwood Preserve is 41 acres, with the

Laura Starkey Conservation Cemetery taking up a small section. “Conservation comes into the

name because this is a nature preserve and the property will remain in its natural state. So when you are buried here, you are participating in the preservation of this land in its natural state and contributing to the health and protection of important plant communities,” explained Laura Starkey. Keeping these woodlands pristine is personal for Laura, who grew up exploring the lay of her family’s land. For the past decade, Laura, as Director of Conservation Lands, has taken care of the Starkey family’s natural areas. “I learned about natural burial at a land conservation conference and it just appealed to me,” said Laura. “It’s a way to hold on to the natural areas and also to share in the conservation with other people.” Heartwood Preserve, along with Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park, protects Florida’s majestic longleaf pines. Laura is extremely knowledgeable about Florida’s ecology and the efforts others in the state are making to save ecosystems such as the ones supported by longleaf pines. In the office at Heartwood Preserve, one can find a number of books on natural Florida (including some by Laura’s friend Carlton Ward, Jr., author, conservationist photographer and eighth generation Floridian). Supporting diverse ecosystems and home to nearly 600 plant and animal species (including threatened and endangered species), longleaf pine forests once encompassed more than 90 million acres across the Southeast. According to the United States Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (nrcs.usda.gov), the Southeast’s precious corridor of longleaf pines is now broken, reduced by almost 97 Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

percent over the last 200 years. A major concern to naturalists, the plight of the longleaf pines finally gained government support in 2010, when the NRCS launched the Longleaf Pine Initiative (LLPI) in an effort to support conservation. Through the efforts of the LLPI, along with other conservation efforts such as Heartwood Preserve and Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park, the longleaf forests are slowly gaining ground. From 2010 to 2014, the amount of healthy longleaf forests grew from 3 million acres to more than 4 million acres (nrcs.usda.gov).

Remembrance Under Longleaf Pines The meandering paths at Heartwood Preserve invite guests to take a nature walk, providing a deeply satisfying way to remember a loved one. Laura led me on a walking tour through Heartwood Preserve and we came upon a gravesite. A simple mound surrounded with pinecones that friends and family gathered, the grave eventually will settle to seamlessly blend with the rest of the woods, becoming home to wildflowers, bushes and trees that help wildlife to thrive. No tombstones are allowed; rather a small metal plaque marks the spot at ground level. Laura said the Preserve is looking into allowing the planting of a Florida-native tree to commemorate loved ones who are buried on the Preserve. Services are very personable. The gravesites are prepared prior to the family arriving, but family and friends are given the option to shovel dirt to fill the grave. This appeals to many grieving friends and family members on an innate level. After all, death is

part of life as is grieving; the option to actively help lay one’s loved one to rest is cathartic for many. Personally, prior to visiting Heartwood Preserve, I thought I preferred cremation to burial, simply because I don’t like the idea of my body preserved with chemicals and entombed. A final resting place under Florida’s longleaf pines, where the body truly returns to the earth sounds much better. The burial of cremated remains is an option at Heartwood Preserve, and, just as with a body, the ashes may be in a biodegradable container or poured directly into the ground. While tombstones aren’t allowed, there are other ways that people have chosen to mark the graves of loved ones. One young man’s friends and family marked his simple wooden casket with handprints and drawings. Things found on the preserve land also are allowed to decorate gravesites, such as the pinecones circling the gravesite I visited with Laura.

Responsible and Loving Pre-Planning While Heartwood Preserve is one of two conservation cemeteries in Florida, it is the only one licensed to offer pre-planning. It’s not something we like to think about, but making plans prior to one’s death is a very loving gift to those still living. Many times, when someone dies unexpectedly, the family has no clue about the personal wishes of their loved one. “In this industry, we meet couples married 50 to 60 years that haven’t discussed their wishes for burial,” shared Heartwood Preserve Manager Diana Sayegh, who works closely with families making final arrangements as well as pre-planning. “We have casual,

intimate meetings with families to discuss what a green burial means for the full body or cremains. For instance, we don’t scatter ashes; they are put into the earth. There is no embalming so that it is a completely natural burial.” If a green burial under the Florida sky in a protected stand of longleaf pines seems like a good final resting place, stop by Heartwood Preserve’s office and talk to Diana or Laura. It’s a beautiful place to take a nature hike, and often, guided tours are available. Diana recalled a recent silent meditation walk led by a local yoga instructor. “Every now and then, she’d remind us to stop and breathe and take it all in. I really enjoyed it.” Talk & Tour events at Heartwood Preserve are held twice monthly on the first Tuesday of the month at 9:30 a.m. and the third or fourth Thursday monthly at 5:30 p.m. The Tuesday morning tours (led by Diana) focus on answering common questions about the green burial process. The Thursday early evening tours (led by Laura) are meant to educate the public about the conservation efforts of the Preserve and you can still catch the June Talk & Tour with Laura Starkey at Heartwood Preserve on June 22 at 5:30 p.m. Heartwood Preserve is located at 4100 Starkey Boulevard in Trinity, FL. Welcome Center hours: Mon. – Fri., 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and by appointment on weekends and holidays. Nature Preserve hours: Mon. – Sat., 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and 11 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on Sun. Find more information about Heartwood Preserve Conservation Cemetery, Talk & Tour events and guided walks at www.heartwoodpreserve.com. Longoria Looking to Finish what Boggs Started

By Jake Berry

If you look out over the left center field fence at Tropicana Field you will see a familiar sight. Just over section 147 and beside Ducky’s Sports Bar in the 162 Landing is the iconic number 42 plastered on the wall. Jackie Robinson’s retired number is a fixture in all 30 major league ballparks and while the Rays have just a 20-year history, Robinson’s number isn’t the only one enshrined in the Trop. Just below it is the number 12 and it belongs to a man that helped put the expansion franchise on the map during its 1998 inaugural season. That number 12 belongs to Hall of Famer, Wade Boggs. Boggs is an AL East icon. He dons the Boston Red Sox cap in his Cooperstown plaque and his lone World Series ring comes from his time with the New York Yankees. While the list of accomplishments in the Chicken Man’s career goes on and on, there is one more feat, one more accomplishment that adds to the 12 time all-star’s legacy. The Tampa native signed a two year deal with his hometown Tampa Bay Devil Rays before the franchise’s inaugural season. Entering his age 40 seasons, Boggs had nothing left to prove. He was almost guaranteed a spot in the Hall of Fame, he had his World Series ring, he had won five batting titles, and he played for two of the most historic franchises in the game. Still, Boggs took the opportunity in front of him, an opportunity many players dream of, and he took on the challenge of helping establish a new major league ball club in his own backyard. As a member of the then Devil Rays, Boggs eclipsed many milestones, including his 3000th hit. However, nothing was more important than the impact he had on the fan base and the community as major league baseball was finally brought to Tampa/St. Pete. Boggs laid the foundation for 18 years of ballplayers to come after him, and while the Chicken Man held down third base for 152 games during his Devil Rays career, there is a player manning the hot corner now that is looking to finish what Boggs started. Evan Longoria is the face of the Tampa Bay Rays franchise. When debating which players go on the Mount Rushmore of Tampa Bay baseball, Longoria is a unanimous choice amongst the fan base. The Rays made Longoria the third overall pick in the 2006 draft and he made his debut with the team just a year and a half later in April of 2008. After posting a .272 average with 27 home runs, the 22 year old won the American League Rookie of the Year award and also made his first of

14

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • info@NNLFlorida.com

three all-star teams. While the individual accolades were great, Longoria’s rookie year legacy really comes from him leading the squad to not only their winning season in franchise history, but also their first pennant and ultimately their only World Series appearance. Also a third baseman, Longoria plays a much different game at the plate than Boggs. While Boggs was known for his uncanny ability to slap the ball around the ballpark and find holes in the defense, Rays fans know Longoria for hitting the ball out of the ballpark. He is the only player in Rays history with more than 200 homers and will more than likely end his career over the 300 mark. That isn’t the only category Longoria leads. He is also the team’s all-time leader in doubles, runs batted in, at bats, games played, and there are several other records that he will likely break before his career is over. There are two iconic time periods in Rays history, the first couple of years when major league baseball was new to the area in the late 90’s and a decade later when the team went from worst to first and made their World Series run in 2008. Both of those periods were headed by two of the most iconic players in Rays history. Boggs was a Hall of Fame bound third baseman that was dangerous at the plate with a solid legacy in place. Longoria fits all of those characteristics, except his story remains unfinished. Wade Boggs helped to put the Tampa Bay Rays on the baseball map and Evan Longoria is looking to finish what he started by bringing a World Series title to Boggs’ hometown.

You’ve Got a Guy! The Grout Guy: Tile & Grout Restoration By Marcy Sanford For more than 16 years The Grout Guy has been expertly restoring tile floors and walls to their original glory. Owner Coleman Wilson credits their success on experience, equipment, and stellar customer service. “We treat our clients’ homes as if they were our own. We use the most high-end equipment available which means we can remove any spot or stain for a complete tile and grout make-over.” Once your tile is sparkling clean, The Grout Guy will treat and seal it to protect it against future wear and tear, spills and stains. “The protection we put on the tile and grout is strong enough that if you have white grout and your spill red wine on it, you can clean it up with a paper towel.” Another difference between The Grout Guy and others is that The Grout Guy can custom match any color you want for a color seal. They never bring a cookie cutter pre-made color but instead always mix your colorant seal while at your house to ensure that it matches perfectly. The Grout Guy will not rest until

16

every inch of your grout and tile looks like new. “I go over every grout line to make sure it is perfect,” said Coleman. “If you hated your grout before, you will absolutely love it after I’m done. Plus, with correct maintenance, it will stay pristine and beautiful for 10 years or more.” Showers: The water in Florida can ruin a shower, and even if you clean it daily, you’re likely to end up with build up and ugly stains on your shower floor and walls. The Grout Guy will steam clean all the tile in your bathroom and re-caulk around the

shower doors and windows. He’ll even clean the glass so your doors are as crystal clear as the day they were installed. The Grout Guy’s sealant will protect your shower against future mold and build-up so you can concentrate on getting yourself clean, not worry about how hard your shower will be to clean. Inside Floors: Tile floors are a practical choice for Florida living and with a wide variety of styles, color, and shapes, they can fit any décor but sometimes after several years, your tile can become grimy looking and have

Don’t let Spot Get too Hot!

How to keep your four legged friend cool this summer.

By Billy Alice Florida is known for many things, not least of which is the HEAT! While most of the country assumes it’s always Summer here, us Floridians know the hot honest truth. Summer can get brutal and for our fur wearing friends it can be even more unbearable. So if you have a canine companion here are a few tips to keep them cool and how to spot if they’ve gotten too hot! First things first, always make sure to have a lot of fresh water available for your dog (year round) but especially in the summer months. This will keep them hydrated and help cool them from the inside out. One of the best ways to avoid overheating, is to plan outdoor activity in the early mornings and later evenings when the temperature is lower. When going on walks keep your pup on grass or light concrete as much as possible. On a 95° day the concrete can reach a temperature of 120° at peak sun hours and the grass can still reach 105°. If the ground is too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your pup! In the hot months try going on shorter walks more frequently instead of long walks that can lead to exhaustion or overheating. It’s also never a good idea to let your pup sit in a parked car even if the windows are cracked or open. Cars can quickly exceed the ambient temperature of the air even in shade, so if they can’t come inside where you are going, leave them at home in the air conditioning.

To help expel some of your dog’s energy but still stay cool, consider playing in the hose or sprinkler with your pet. It is a great way to keep you both refreshed and have some fun! If you have access to a pool or body of water taking your dog for a swim will help them get in activity but stay cool in the process. When using water to cool your pup you should avoid using any water that is ice cold however, as that can constrict blood vessels and make it harder for your dog to release excess heat. Wetting their ears with water or rubbing alcohol will actively help them cool off if you notice any signs of heat exhaustion. Be sure to keep a close eye on them and familiarize yourself with the symptoms of heat exhaustion in dogs, especially when doing outdoor activities. Signs include, excessive panting, rapid heartbeat, disorientation, collapse, brick red gums or tongue, vomiting and respiratory distress. If you notice any of these contact your vet immediately and start actively cooling them down. A normal temperature for a dog is between 98° and 102°, a dog’s temperature should never go above 103°. The best way to keep your dog safe and happy is just to be aware of them and their surroundings. Summer doesn’t have to mean indoors only for your best friend if you keep these tricks in mind.

Different frozen treats are a fantastic way to help your pup beat the heat, my St. Bernard loves plain ice and now comes running at the sound of our ice machine. Also freezing different stuffable toys with vet approved fillers can work wonders for a hot dog. Both my dogs love frozen watermelon or apples, and blended banana and peanut butter is always a crowd pleaser! Just be sure to check with your vet before changing your dog’s diet.

Suncoast Urgent Care – A Trusted Provider in Trinity for a Decade By Kim Thomas Many in the West Pasco and North Pinellas areas already know Suncoast Urgent Care and its friendly staff and doctors, but it may come as a surprise that July will mark a decade that this family-oriented emergency medical practice has served the community. Located at Trinity Village Center just off of State Road 54, Suncoast Urgent Care is the perfect answer to the question of where to go when you have an emergency that doesn’t require the hospital. It is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday. Founding physicians Peter C. Duic, MD and John P. Opyoke, MD are residency-trained in Emergency Medicine and are board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Opyoke and Dr. Duic are trained to handle the gamut of medical emergencies and they designed Suncoast Urgent Care to be equipped to treat nearly all non-life threatening emergencies. Furthermore, Drs. Duic and Opyoke and their medical staff provide the community with convenient and competent health and wellness care which includes the effective weight loss program Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss. Suncoast Urgent Care has continued to grow to meet the needs of the community; its staff now includes physicians, nurse practitioners, RNs, medical assistants and x-ray technicians. Trusted by the community for the past decade since Suncoast Urgent Care opened its doors, it has seen over 125,000 repeat visits at its Trinity location alone. When recently speaking with Dr. Duic, it was hard to believe nearly ten years have gone by since he and Dr. Opyoke opened the doors to patients

Co-Founder Dr. Duic (3rd from right) and some of the professionals who are part of the Suncoast Urgent Care team in Trinity on July 16, 2007. At the time, the doctors’ families were so young; their children were still preschoolers. Former Emergency Department physicians, they drew upon their extensive ER experience to build an urgent care facility that offers modern technology and good oldfashioned care along with hot coffee, tea or hot chocolate! Equally important, Suncoast Urgent Care is immaculately kept. Drs. Duic and Opyoke’s vision has always been to provide both the care and the environment in which they would want their own family members to be treated. “We’ve stayed true to our original mission – to treat our patients like we’d treat our family,” shares Dr. Duic, “but I think we now have an even deeper understanding of what it is like for our patients. Over the past

ten years our own families have gone through some stressful medical issues and it really makes you think of what the patients and their families are going though. We focus on making our patients feel comfortable and providing good care, which includes prompt care. Our providers listen and give patients the time they need and help us understand what’s going on.” Suncoast Urgent Care is not meant for life-threatening emergencies – for a life and death situation a patient should go to the hospital ER. Rather, Suncoast Urgent Care provides quality medical care in a state-of-the-art facility for patients who are sick or injured who do not require the Emergency Room. A visit to Suncoast Urgent Care is far less costly to the patient than a visit to the hospital ER and, as one of their slogans says, they treat everything

from “Common Colds to Broken Bones.” Many parents bring their children to Suncoast Urgent Care for school and sports physicals and the quieter summer months are a great time to get ahead of schedule with a thorough, quick and convenient $29 school or sports physical. Young athletes often spend more time practicing during summer months and parents know that bumps, bruises, sprains, and breaks are sometimes an unwanted part of the game. Your child will receive quality care quickly at Suncoast Urgent Care. “We treat a lot of sports injuries,” says Dr. Duic. “We have an x-ray machine on site and are humbled to receive lots of referrals from local sports clubs. We are very familiar with pediatric injuries which may be different from adult injuries due to growth plates.”

throughout Pasco and Hernando Counties,” says Dr. Duic. “We have a strong relationship with the school boards, the police and fire departments as well as some big employers including UPS and Target.”

Get Results with Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss

In some cases, more extensive imaging is necessary. Suncoast Urgent Care has affiliations with off-site radiology providers who offer more advanced imaging, such as CAT scans and MRIs, on the same day, if needed. Digital medical records allow for images to be viewed easily from one provider to the next and make it possible for the doctors to receive report studies back on the same day. In addition, should a patient benefit from seeing a medical specialist, the providers at Suncoast Urgent Care are familiar with specialists in the area and will do their best to help patients schedule an appointment as soon as possible. On-site digital x-ray, EKGs, lab testing, IV fluids and medications from an onsite pharmacy at each location make it even more convenient

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

for patients and helps cut down on travel, time, and cost. Also, Suncoast Urgent Care’s onsite lab provides immediate results for Strep, Mononucleosis, Flu, urinalysis and more.

Businesses Partner with Suncoast Urgent Care Many local businesses have chosen to partner with Suncoast Urgent Care. The practice offers Occupational Medicine which includes pre-employment drug screens, random and “Under Suspicion” drug testing as well as treatment for work related injuries for local retail, service, industrial and corporate clients; they also handle workman’s compensation cases and provide physicals for the Department of Transportation. “We work with big and small businesses

In addition to providing a wonderful urgent care facility both here in Trinity and in Spring Hill, Drs. Duic and Opyoke created a personalized, physician assisted weight loss program that helps clients turn their health around. Dr. Duic speaks about Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss: “Our philosophy is to make it as simple as possible. After an initial consultation, we design an individual weight loss program for clients that will guide them toward their weight loss goals. Simple meal plans are provided to assist with not only food preparation, but also with shopping for easy-to-prepare meals. Nutritional counseling is provided, free of charge at the client’s request.”

Suncoast Urgent Care is Available When Your Family Physician Can’t Be There have been many occasions over the past ten years when my own

family has turned to Dr. Duic and Dr. Opyoke at Suncoast Urgent Care, from needing checking out after a car accident to viruses, flus, bad sprains and high school sports physicals. It isn’t that we don’t have a great primary care physician, we do, but often emergencies, fevers and sickness happen after doctors’ offices close or on the weekend. At the patients’ request, Suncoast Urgent Care will share any findings with the primary care physician and they have a great relationship with many physicians in the area. In fact, a lot of primary care physicians in the area refer their patients to Suncoast Urgent Care when they are away on vacation or out of their offices for training. When you need a doctor right away or want to save yourself the expense of the hospital ER for a minor injury, turn to Suncoast Urgent Care. Suncoast Urgent Care has two locations: 10730 SR 54, Ste. 104, in Trinity and 4112 Mariner Blvd. in Spring Hill. Hours: 9 a.m.– 9 p.m. on Mon. – Sat., and 10 a.m.–4 p.m. on Sun. Call (727) 372-3888 to reach the Trinity office. Log on to SuncoastUCC.com for additional information.

The Significance of Early Childhood Reading and Writing As a VPK teacher, and I want to express the importance of early childhood reading and writing. I gained interest in these subjects when my son was four years old and I asked myself, “What can I do to ensure that my son has a successful education?” Being a VPK teacher has taught me that both parents and teachers need to instruct the child early and help them improve their skills in reading and writing. It is important to teach children how to hold a book correctly, recognize letter sounds, know which letters are capitalized and lowercased. Also, to hear and identify sounds in spoken words. Strong reading skills are important for young children, In order to identify those who struggle with reading as early as possible and to help them develop early literacy and learning skills. Through my experience in working with young children, phonological awareness is essential. It is the ability to hear and identify sounds, practice rhymes, and syllables. Introducing new vocabulary words to young children, like reading stories to them, can strengthen their skills

26

in reading and writing. My favorite books to read to children, in order to help them learn sounds and rhyming, are Dr. Seuss and Clifford “The Big Red Dog.” Through listening comprehension and understanding the meaning of words they frequently hear, gives young children motivation to read. Strong writing skills are important in pre-K for communication. The children are able to draw and describe their drawings with others. To begin, children learn to write their names from left to right, top to bottom. Writing takes a lot of practice and I try to give them a lot of opportunities for children to improve their writing. During my experience, I observed as the children enjoyed learning letters and sounds in the classroom. By the end of the year, the children are able to recall information from books and gain knowledge on reading and writing. Teaching these skills to each child is important, in order to help them for their future. Evis Petromilo VPK Teacher

I am getting quality work at a discount. Today I have my dad’s rental property getting flipped, because well it needs to and he can’t do it anymore due to dementia. Cool Off With a Trip to a Florida Spring! By Katie Thomas June is here and we are in the full swing of summer, which means soaring temperatures for Tampa Bay Area. With record highs, locals are looking for ways to cool down and enjoy the sunshine without breaking the bank or burning to a crisp! Luckily, Florida is home to more than just beautiful beaches - we are blessed with gorgeous natural springs that offer cool relief with 72-degree water year round! From Homosassa to Gainesville, you can find glorious cool freshwater springs to enjoy with your family on less than a tank of gas! Grab your masks and snorkels and get ready to jump in and cool off! Where in the Heck is Chassahowitzka?! A short drive north on U.S. Highway 19 will bring to you to the Chassahowitzka River, known the locals as The Chaz. National Wildlife Refuge and offers visitors the opportunity to camp, hike, swim, snorkel, canoe and more on the clear, cold waters of the river. Dog and family friendly, The Chaz is home to vast expanses of hardwood swamps, clear as crystal springs, salt marshes and the occasional manatee or otter sighting! Known as a paddler’s paradise, The Chaz is the perfect spot to escape the Florida heat and reconnect with nature. One of my favorite spots on The Chaz is Seven Sisters Springs, which is just a short paddle down the river. Seven Sisters is a collection of seven small springs that connect on one of the small creeks of The Chaz. You will find one large spring that allows you to easily swim through the limestone opening if you dare. More experienced freedivers can be seen snorkeling through the six other springs that connect with entrance and exit spots not recommended if you are not an experienced diver or have any type of claustrophobia. I’ve snorkeled through the tunneling beauty of Seven Sisters and the ethereal experience is one that cannot easily be matched. While paddling The Chaz, make

Soon after the first mermaid show, Weeki Wachee became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Florida and since its opening, the mermaids and the spring have become Florida legends. “Once a Mermaid, Always a Mermaid,” is a long said motto of all the girls who have performed with tails in the ancient spring. Target Tarpon in Tampa Bay By Captain Matt Selby The Tarpon bite is on fire in Tampa Bay and surrounding areas from now until the end of June. Local guides and recreational fishermen alike chomp at the bit for this time of year, and for good reason; Tarpon fishing is addicting, plain and simple. All it takes is a large fish, maybe a 100 pounder or so, to grab your bait and start it’s unrivaled arial show as she attempts to throw the hook for even the most seasoned angler to be “hooked” on tarpon for life. When Tarpon feel the sharp steel of the hook, this fish has a propensity for skyrocketing from the water and ejecting both bait and hook high into the air. Even when an angler was lucky enough to survive this first burst of acrobatics and succeed in finding a place for the hook to imbed in the Tarpons hard mouth, only then did the angler truly understand the awesome strength of the mighty Silver King! If the hook sticks, an angler can prepare for a back-breaking 30 minute or longer fight! “There’s no feeling like it! Adrenaline pumps through my veins

34

so hard sometimes my body starts shaking when a Tarpon finally takes the bait,” says John Swan of Tarpon Springs. Tarpon weren’t always a sought after game fish in our area, in fact, my grandfather would rather net up some mullet to throw on the smoker than break his back for a fish that offered no food value. He also never had the opportunity to battle a Tarpon on rod and reel as a younger man or I have a feeling his thoughts on targeting Tarpon would be different. In fact, I even shared his same views on Tarpon fishing until I hooked into my first large fish floating a live grunt in the Florida Keys about 15 years ago. In 1885 William H. Wood and his massive Silver fish made international headlines after being landed on rod and reel for the first time on record in an area now called “Tarpon Bay” of southwest Florida. This was the start of a brand new big-game fishing frontier in the state but it wasn’t until the late 1960s that Tampa Bay anglers learned that the silver sided giants could be found in plentiful numbers right here at

home. Boca Grande, about an hour and a half south of Tampa is world renowned for the very best Tarpon fishing on the planet! Ask any serious Tarpon fisherman where their favorite place to target Tarpon is and Boca Grande usually comes out of their mouth with a big smile. Schools of well over 10,000 migratory fish show up in the Boca Grande Pass and Charlotte Harbor starting in April and by this time of year the pass

can look like a parking lot on the weekends with well over 100 boats at peak fishing hours sharing the same space. Tensions can be high and “road rage” type scenes are common if a boater runs over the line of a fisherman’s hooked up fish. Boca Grande, especially the pass is no place for newbies and an experienced charter captain is almost a necessity. My friend Captain Mike Manning of Action Fishing Adventures has over 20 years of experience in the waters off Boca Grande. When I want to catch big Tarpon in Boca Grande, I charter Mike. Yes, you heard that right, Mike’s so good, other fishing guides, such as myself, charter him when they want to catch big Boca Grande Tarpon! Fishing for Tarpon near the Skyway bridge in Tampa can also be a little crowded at times but weekdays are perfect! This time of year, very much like in Boca, Tarpon are feeding on blue crabs being swept out of the flats and out into the deeper passes. Tarpon by the thousands set up shop in these locations looking for an easy meal. Presentation is of the utmost importance when Tarpon fishing. This means understanding how the fish feed and how to set up your drift

so that your bait looks like every other little crab being flushed out with the tide. Screw this up, and you’ll be one frustrated fisherman. Tarpon are happy to bite if everything looks right, get it wrong (and that’s easy to do) and you may not see a bite all season. Like all fishing, trial and error plays a big role in the success an angler will experience. Some people use Bobbers but I prefer a balloon because I can easily adjust the depth of my bait onthe-fl y. In my opinion, live bait is king but a well presented swim bait like a 7 or 9 inch Hogy lure or a hard bait such as Pauls unfair Mullet 120 by Unfair Lures are some of my favorite choices. Tarpon numbers are bouncing back to record highs now that catch and release has become common practice for the magnificent Silver

King of Game Fish. It’s beyond frowned upon to take these beautiful fish and kill them just for a picture or to have them stuffed and mounted. A quick boat side picture is more than sufficient to keep the memory and if you really want to commemorate the fight, have a replica fish mount created. They can be created by a simple picture and/or measurements. If you would like to go fishing with me in Tampa Bay or search for Tarpon along the beaches you can contact me at matt@nnlflorida.com or if you want to go fishing in Boca Grande with Captain Mike Manning of Action Fishing Adventures you can call him directly at 727-2438918. SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: SUMMER STRATEGIES Summer in Florida … hot, humid, and a great time to prepare for the SAT and ACT Exams with available time and the new SAT Exam on August 26th, and first ACT Exam on September 10th. Rising seniors like having the time to really focus and study with results known early in the fall. If strong, then no further prep or tests are needed; if not quite what desired, there is time to take it again. Rising juniors like to see how well they can do, plus this is a perfect time to prep for the PSAT in October and have the best shot at a national merit scholarship. Rising sophomores like the preparation, especially those aiming for “Top 25” or “Top 10” colleges and universities and possibly major scholarships. Some very good news is that the SAT finally gave in to pressure and added an exam in August. Results will be back in time for UF admissions the first of November and applications for early admission to other colleges and universities, which has been a major problem with the SAT in prior

36

years. The first ACT Exam of the fall is always scheduled for the early September. I have many options for summer preparations. First, my prep classes can be taken individually, or the SAT and ACT can be combined which saves 15 class hours from taking them separately because of their overlapping material. My classes can start in June after the last ACT exam on June 10th, or in July or early August, depending upon whether a student wants to take one or two classes a week, and how we need to schedule around family vacations, jobs, or other time requirements. Make sure and check when your high school begins classes in early August because they keep starting earlier and earlier each year. Classes can be private or semiprivate, and my maximum class is three students. Often, students have friends or “study buddies” they would like to prepare with. I do like to schedule our Dress Rehearsal Exam and follow-up Review shortly before the actual exam. If you would like to talk with

me further about your student and my summer classes, please contact me at 727-253-0639 or at wwa0811@mykolab.com. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve 200 – 350 points on the Writing, Reading, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to eight of the top ten universities in the country, seventeen of the top twenty-five, and many schools in Florida. These schools include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Air Force and Merchant Marine Service Academies, Penn State, LSU, Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, FIU, New College of Florida, Stetson, and Julliard – Manhattan New England - and Berkley Conservatories of Music. scholarships. This year, he also tutored three juniors who scored at the national merit finalist/semi-finalist levels on the most recent PSAT. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

“Central Park” Continued from page 1 6:30 a.m. and closing at 8:00 p.m., it gives customers that old-fashioned diner feel. The servers are friendly and also are “regulars” as they have been with the restaurant for a long time and know many customers by name. It’s no wonder that the restaurant has a solid population of regulars. Chris and Charlie Michael, coowners, opened Central Park Family Restaurant in 2007 in New Port Richey, but the brothers weren’t new to the restaurant business. Their parents opened the family’s first restaurant in New York City in 1982. Florida transplants, the family ran the popular Four Coins Family Restaurant in St. Petersburg for nearly 16 years before opening several more successful restaurants. Central Park’s regulars love the food and they love Chris and Charlie, and their friendly staff. You’ll often find one of the brothers checking on tables and saying hello to diners, and quite a few of the Central Park team are family members. Central Park Family Restaurant is a family-run, family-friendly restaurant at its best. Charlie is in charge of Central Park’s catering department, which is a

popular local choice for parties of all kinds, family gatherings and even local business seminars. Altogether the menu gives costumers 10 pages to choose from! The menu is as varied as it is large and includes entrées and specialties that include favorites from a variety of types of fare including American, Italian, Greek, and French to Spanish, Polish, and German. There is something for everyone on the extensive menu. Just like a busy diner in the Big Apple, Central Park Family Restaurant puts out delicious food and fast, catering to the tastes of an expansive group of people – which is perfect for a small diner in New Port Richey, Florida, where we have people from all over the country. Chris calls the menu “American Fusion” and there are literally so many specials daily that he installed a large flat-screen TV to continually scroll the specials. The menu must be seen! The fresh wild-caught Salmon Florentine is a house favorite. There are northern favorites such as scrapple (a traditional mush of pork combined with cornmeal and wheat flour with spices) and the New Jersey Taylor pork roll. Down-home southern favorites include delicious fried chicken and the newly added fried green tomatoes, which are a unique Mediterranean and

Hear it from Central Park’s Regulars Central Park Family Restaurant had 4.7 stars on Google reviews from 162 reviews as of June 5, 2017. “Loved this place,” said customer and Google reviewer Alvaro Correa. “Service and food are on top of the curve. Portions are generous and well made, this is a place that needs to be put on the favorite list for anyone. I know it is for our family now.” A regular at Central Park, shares this, “Great food and service! I have eaten breakfast, lunch and dinner here.

A wide array of menu options. Not a long wait for a table. Well worth the wait! Everyone is very friendly and takes the extra time to be sure you leave a satisfied customer. James Ludeman, gave Central Park a 5-star Google review, stating, “I love this place! My family and I eat here on the regular. Food is incredible, and the service is always good. Will miss it when we move.” Five-star reviewer John shared this about Central Park in New Port Richey, “My favorite restaurant in this area. The staff is excellent from the minute you walk in the door. Sometimes you have to wait a few minutes to be seated. That’s a sign of great food. Never walked away hungry or disappointed. Thanks guys.” Central Park Family Restaurant garners 4.5 stars from 362 Trip Advisor reviews (as of June 5). Regular diner Barrie M. referred to Central Park a lunchtime delight and said, “This trip was a lunchtime and we were both in the mood for some fish. My wife had haddock blackened and Cajun, she said it was to die for and the serving was huge. I had fish and chips (also haddock) and was served three huge fillets and enough fries to feed a whole family. Awesome. Needless to say we took some home with us. Excellent food

and excellent service by friendly people. We discovered this place because they catered a 50th anniversary party for some relatives, their catering service is excellent and way above the normal catering standards on finds nowadays.” Lucy Alvarez gave a 5-star Trip Advisor review titled “#1 for Many Reasons” in which she shared, “Central Park is our go to place especially when nobody can decide on what to eat. They have pretty much anything you're craving. I had the Thai red curry chicken my husband had the prime rib and my kids had burgers that should’ve been on the adult menu that’s how big they were. The place is always busy clean and the staff is some of the best I’ve ever seen. This is just an all-around perfect little diner and highly recommended.” Central Park Family Restaurant is located at 7657 SR 54 in New Port Richey in the plaza near Dunkin Donuts and Wendy’s. They are open daily from 6:30 a.m. with last seating at 8 p.m. For information about Central Park Family Restaurant, including catering, please call (727) 376-7402; log on to www.centralparkfamilyrestaurant.com, or like them on Facebook.
