Happy Father's Day ! I want to take this opportunity to wish all fathers, stepdads and paternal figures out there, a very Happy Father's Day, filled with joy, laughter and love. Father's Day is a celebration that takes places almost all over the world. This day is meant to honor fathers and celebrate fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. Did you know? Father's Day was not celebrated in the U.S., outside Catholic traditions, until the 20th century. As a civic celebration in the U.S., it was inaugurated in the early 20th century to complement Mother's Day by celebrating fathers and male parenting. On June 19, 1910 a Father's Day celebration was held at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd. Her father, a civil war veteran, William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised 6 children alone. Sonora was a member of Old Centenary Presbyterian Church (now Knox Presbyterian Church), where she first proposed the idea. After hearing a sermon about Mother's DAy in 1909 at the Central Methodist Episcopal Church, Sonora told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday to honor them. Although she initially suggested June 5th, her father's birthday, the pastors did not have enough time to prepare their sermons and coordinate the celebration so they said "let's do it the third Sunday in June," pretty interesting, right? Several

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

local clergymen accepted the idea, and on June 19, 1910, the first Father's Day, sermons honoring fathers were presented throughout the city. Much has changed since then. Today, many fathers raise children alone, and they do a fantastic job at it. Dad's all over the world are changing diapers, feeding crying babies at 3am and taking their kids to ballet or baseball practice. Their involvement has been crucial in today's society, where working mother's need all the help they can get. The Book of Proverbs says that parents are the glory of their children. A father is his son's first hero, and his daughter's first love. Dad is a provider, protector and fearless roach killer. He will screw, hammer and build things and tuck you in so tightly you won't be able to move. He is the one with the bad "dad jokes," you can never get enough of, and the one you run to when mom says "no." For this Father's Day make sure you make your dad feel extra special for all that he does. Instead of giving him another pair of socks or a colorful tie he may or may not end up wearing, make sure you hug and kiss him and tell him you love him. Offer to do those simple things he normally does, to ease the burden or those menial jobs we always expect him to do, like mow the lawn and take out the trash. Instead of taking him out for dinner, try cooking his favorite meal, he would appreciate the

effort much more. But if you do end up taking him out, make sure to pay for his share even if he refuses. I lost my father last year, and I will never stop celebrating him and being thankful for the man the he was and everything he did to provide for me, my sister and my mother. My father was selfless, honest, caring and hardworking. He was the life of the party, the one with the silly jokes and someone who everyone enjoyed having around. I miss him every day, but I thank God to have had such an incredible man in my life. Last but not least, I want to wish a very "Happy Father's Day" to Tim Selby, my father-in-law. Tim reminds me so much of my dad, it's actually scary. Tim is iincredibly selfless and giving, he is so much fun and a great dancer! Tim goes above and beyond for everyone he knows, and he works extremely hard to provide for his family, and he does it all with a big smile on his face. He took me in and made me feel like a member of the family from the day one. And even though I lost my dad, God granted me another father in Tim, and I couldn't be happier. I hope you all have a great day with your dads, stepdads, paternal figures and grandparents. Whatever you end up doing this Father's Day, promise me you will remind those special men in your life how much they mean to you. Just don't ever stop making your "dad" feel special for all that he does.

GET MORE HOT WATER, COOL YOUR GARAGE AND SAVE MONEY! What if I told you that you could have a brand new water heater, add a cooling source to your garage, reduce your energy bill significantly AND receive a government rebate all for as little as $50mo with no money out of pocket? It may sound too good to be true but, we at Tampa Bay Plumbers, are here to tell you it is not! As a trusted plumbing contractor with over 100 years of combined field experience, we have replaced thousands of water heaters, from gas to electric and even solar. There is one consensus among our plumbers as to what type of water heater they would put in their own home, and that is the Hybrid-Type water heater. This ultra energy efficient water heater is the wave of the future! Given its ability to produce hot water and at the same time cooling down your garage, all while saving you money! The Hybrid Water Heater uses an electric heat pump that transfers the room temperature to heat the tank maintaining the water temperature, which prevents the water heater from using valuable electrical energy to keep the water warm. Another great feature to this type of unit is that while it is pulling heat from the room, a refrigerant inside the unit pushes out cold air to the surrounding area. So not only are you

4

going to save money on your energy bill, you are also going to be able to provide cool air in your garage on those hot summer days! Hybrid water heaters are 3.5 times more efficient than the standard electric water heater and will produce approximately 15% more hot water in the first hour of use. According to Energy Star, residents in the Tampa area are eligible for a rebate of $275-$400 when a Hybrid Water Heater is installed in a home. So let’s do the math, the average installed price of a hybrid water heater is $2,500. Assuming you get a rebate of $400 that brings your investment amount to $2,100. It is estimated that you will save over $4,000

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • info@NNLFlorida.com

over the life of the water heater in energy costs. Assuming you only save $33.33 per month on your energy bill with this installation the investment will have paid for itself in a little over 5 years. This means that you could be getting more hot water, saving on your energy bill, adding a cooling source to your garage, have your investment pay for itself in 5 years all with a 10 year manufacturer warranty! We have multiple financing options ranging from 18 months no

interest, to minimum monthly payments of 1.25% of the purchase price which would mean no money out of pocket and an option that would put your monthly payment LESS than the projected energy savings! SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: SUMMER PREP CLASSES By Dr. Wayne Adams

Wow? Summer break has already started. Before we know it, high schools will be back in session in early August. How time flies, especially over the summer. As you know from my last article, more and more students prefer to prepare over the summer for the first SAT and ACT exams of the fall. Rising seniors want to see if their scores are high enough for desired colleges and universities (and for Bright Futures), rising juniors want to see how they would score plus preparing for the PSAT in mid-October, and many rising sophomores incorporate preparing for these exams as part of their longer term strategy to be admitted to the best possible universities and to seek to maximize scholarships. Time for a little reminiscing. In May, I was asked to speak at the graduation party for one of my students. Having helped him since the seventh grade, it was great to

see him qualify as a National Merit Scholar finalist, be admitted to the honors program at the University of Florida and be invited to join the special research program since he will be majoring in a combination of physics and biology, and see the happiness in his family and over 100 friends who attended. When people ask me, “What do you do?” they expect me to respond with an answer about being a tutor for the SAT and ACT exams. That is not my answer. My answer is, “I help my students prepare for their best possible futures, which includes doing their best on the SAT and ACT exams.” This is part of the reason that every student receives a copy of my 104 page book titled How To Write College Application Essays Colleges Will Love, and Negotiating With Colleges. It is not unusual for me to receive phone calls from my former students seeking advice about different issues they face in college,

and when seeking their first job after college graduation. I am happy to point out “pros and cons” for them so they can make the best decision for themselves at the time. Every one of my students is special. Every one of my students is unique. At our first class, one of the topics we cover is to define success on the SAT and/or ACT Exam, and in life. While everyone in life is compared to others on different scales, our definition of

success in our class is, “When you walk out of your exam and look back on all we have covered and done in our classes, I want you to simply say to yourself, ‘I have done my very best with the time and the priorities that I had.’” No one can ask a student to do more, and no student should settle for less. I am as proud of a student who scores at the very top of the SAT and/or ACT exam scale as one who had severe learning disabilities and raised the

score from 14 to 20 on the ACT and was able to graduate with that high school class. As with so many things in life, the absolute result is not the most important result … the most important result is building character and doing your best. If this is the type of supercoaching, mentoring, and performance improvement you would like for your student(s), then please give me a call or send an e mail … just send ma an e mail at contact me at wwa0811@mykolab.com or call me at 727-253-0639. Would be great to talk with you further. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve 200 – 350 points on the Writing, Reading, Writing and Essay, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to eight of the top ten universities in the country, eighteen of the top twenty-five, and many schools in Florida. These schools include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U

Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), University of Virginia, NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Air Force and Merchant Marine Service Academies, Penn State, Purdue, Ohio State, LSU, Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, FIU, New College of Florida, Stetson, and Julliard – Manhattan - New England - and Berkley Conservatories of Music. Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. This year, he also tutored three juniors who scored at the national merit finalist/semi-finalist levels on the most recent PSAT. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

Small Business – Things you need to know By Karen Wiseman, EA The bulk of small businesses in the country today have less than 3 employees. Many of today’s entrepreneurs started their business to make a living and survive. If you can start a business, feed your family, pay your mortgage and create some value, I would consider you a success. My goal with this article is to pass along some knowledge and tools to help you. When you start a business, you wear all the hats… janitor, IT professional, office manager, and bookkeeper. If you are like many small business owners, bookkeeping is probably not your top priority. In fact, I’m willing to bet that you don’t like the task of bookkeeping at all. Our tax system is a self-assessed tax system. You determine what your tax obligation is based on your profitability and then pay the corresponding tax. If you can’t calculate your profitability numbers accurately then how can you remit the correct tax? No matter what type of

10

business you have, every dollar you spend to run it is generally deductible. However, you must keep all your receipts to ensure that you can back up any expenses. What about cash payments? In that situation your receipt becomes your only documentation. If you lose that then you have no deduction. Do you need to keep a receipt if you have a credit card statement listing the charges? You need to keep both the receipt and the statement. The receipt tells a story… a restaurant receipt tells how many people were in attendance the date, time, etc. Get in the habit of jotting down on the back of the receipt the people that were with you and a few words to help you recall what business you discussed. This ensures that if the return is pulled for audit two 2 years later you will be able to remember those details. Just because less than 1% of all returns are audited, it doesn’t mean you will continue to get a pass for all the years you expensed your personal auto at 100% or paid personal expenses through your business. It just means your return

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • info@NNLFlorida.com

hasn’t risen to that 1% number…yet. THOU SHALT NOT CO-MINGLE FUNDS!! - If you are self-employed technically you don’t need a separate bank account however I strongly encourage you to set one up. Co-mingling your business funds with your personal opens the door to the IRS’s ability to review both. Personal expenses could be considered compensation to the business owner and could make them subject to payroll taxes. It also creates a bookkeeping nightmare of what is or

JUNE 2018

isn’t a business expense. Vehicle expenses are another area where business owners can get into trouble. Let’s take for example, a taxpayer filing his own return that took 100% of his auto expense. When the return was pulled for audit, he was asked if he went to the grocery store, out to eat or to the bank during the year and if so did he go on foot! Obviously, that was more than likely false. You need to be able to provide accurate facts and circumstances to support your deductions and they need to be reasonable. There are many “apps” on the market that can

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

help you document your mileage and provide you with an annual report. How long should you keep records for? For as long as their content is material to your return. According to the IRS, all documents that support an item of income, deduction, or credit shown on your tax return should be kept for a minimum of 3 years and some indefinitely depending on the activity they support. Returns can be audited up to three years after the tax return is due or filed. That means if you filed an extension which extends the filing of your return to October 15 then for the 2015 TY you need to keep that return until October 15, 2018. Tax returns where you omitted more than 25% of your income or that contain fraudulent deductions have no statute of limitations. Which records do you keep forever? If you have a change in your accounting method – where you go from cash basis reporting to accrual you need to keep the relating documentation. All purchases of tangible or real property should be kept in a permanent file. Let’s use your personal residence as an example. There is nothing to report when you purchase your house but when you sell it you need to

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

report the sale on your return. This doesn’t necessarily mean it is taxable. To calculate whether it is taxable or not we take the purchase amount and add any capital improvements you made to the home (new windows, tile floors, remodeled kitchen) less the selling price and the net of that is what goes on your return. (subject to any exemptions) It is the same principle with business property. You bought a new desk for the business. You need to keep the receipt and that is your basis in the property. If you dispose of it or sell it you will have a gain or loss. QuickBooks, Spreadsheets, or columnar paper – it doesn’t matter what you do your bookkeeping on. Whatever works for you as long as the records reflect everything that went on in the business. The most important thing is that you understand your reporting obligations and you keep the financial records in order! Today, they strive to make plastic surgery procedures “minimally invasive surgery.” The goal is to shorten recovery times and allow for smaller, less noticeable scars. “I had a breast lift and implant exchange last year by Dr. Landon,” says former patient, Roxane H. “It has been one year and I am extremely pleased with the excellent care I received. I have no scars and my breasts are perfect. Dr. Landon is an excellent surgeon and I would recommend him over anyone I know. I currently am employed in Surgery in one of the largest OR bed hospitals in Pinellas County. Having first hand nursing knowledge, I recognize excellent patient care. Dr. Landon and his staff do a great job!”

R. “I’ve never been so confident in my life! Dr. Landon performed a tummy tuck on me and did an incredible job. Not only he’s a great doctor, but he’s a great listener as well. I walked in the office for my first consultation and by the way he described how he was going to perform the surgery, I was confident he would do an amazing job. He took the time to listen to all my concerns and made me feel really comfortable. The staff is awesome and the office is just beautiful! Overall, I am extremely happy I chose him as my plastic surgeon. I highly recommend him.” “Five stars aren’t Bruce Landon, M.D.; F.A.C.S enough to express how of Landon Plastic Surgery wonderful my experience was with Dr. Landon and “Dr. Landon honestly his staff! I highly recommend LPS. changed my life, literally,” says The decision to have elective recent tummy tuck patient, Anna surgery is not something I took

lightly,” says a patient who underwent surgery less than two weeks ago, but prefers her name to remain anonymous. She proceeds with her review by saying this; “I did a lot of research and choosing the best surgeon in the Tampa Bay area was my first priority. I knew from the initial consultation that I made the best decision in choosing LPS because not only is Dr Landon the most skilled surgeon in the area but he and his staff also treat you like family. They truly went above and beyond. They spent extra time with me during visits, called after hours and promptly answered all emails throughout my journey. They were kind, patient and thorough. My results exceeded my expectations! I’m pretty lean and wanted a natural look to refill my deflated breasts as after having 2 kids and living a fitness-oriented lifestyle I lost all of my volume. They just keep getting better and better as they settle into place. Best decision ever!” The 5-star reviews from people like Lynette, Ana, Roxane, and the above happy and satisfied anonymous patient, are just too many to list, but they will definitely help make your decision to contact Dr. Landon much easier. Happy Birthday United States … and Pass Me Another Hotdog! By Tom Bostock

It’s seven o: clock! You can’t wait for the day to start. It’s the 4th of July and you and your family are going to the park to see the fireworks. You make enough noise to “accidently” wake up your parents and your older brother. After inhaling your breakfast cereal and watching your parents pack the picnic lunch, you pile into the SUV and drive to the park. Your reserved picnic pavilion is waiting for you. Dad puts the charcoal in the grille and fires it up. Your stomach rumbles just thinking about those juicy hot dogs, steaks and hamburgers to come. You play some catch with your brother, get bored and walk back to the picnic. You know the fireworks will be neat but, suddenly, you find yourself wondering why you celebrate the 4th of July in the first place and how did the Fourth of July holiday came about. Well, many people believe we celebrate the Fourth of July because it is the day we received our Independence from England. While those people are thinking along the right track, that is not the entire reason we celebrate the Fourth of July, nor is it the reason that the holiday came about. According to AJC.com, Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence June 1776. Even though the Continental Congress we elected, declared our independence from England on July 2nd, not July 4th, we continue to celebrate our independence on July 4th every year. During the course of the American Revolution a second Continental Congress was formed. It is this group that adopted the final draft of the Declaration of Independence. After the first draft was written it was revised by Ben Franklin, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson one last time, before it was sent to Congress for final approval. All thirteen colonies stood behind the Declaration of Independence and adopted it in full on July 4, 1776. That is also the date that appears on the handwritten copy of the Declaration, as well as the copies, printed by Dunlap and Broadsides, that were circulated throughout the United States, (constitutionalfacts.com). This is where the Fourth of July

16

holiday comes in. The Fourth of July is known as “Independence Day” because that is the day that the Second Continental Congress adopted the full and formal Declaration of Independence. Regardless of the ongoing war the following year, people in Philadelphia celebrated a muted Fourth of July. While celebrations on July 4th during the American Revolution were modest, after the war ended in 1783 the Fourth of July became a big holiday in many places. The celebrations included speeches, military events, parades, concerts, festivals, and fireworks. To this day the Fourth of July is the most patriotic holiday celebrated in the United States. Whether you decide to throw a BBQ in your local community park and stick around to watch the fireworks with your loved ones, or you plan on attending one of the multiple celebrations happening all over Tampa Bay, you may wonder… how do politicians celebrate the 4th of July? Well, Congress won’t be in session, so our best guess is that all the congressmen will be at home with their own families, sharing their holiday celebrations. How about the President of the United States? 4th of July celebrations can be hard for our presidents. Newsweek writer, Julia Glum, had the answers about what some of our presidents did or are going to do on the 4th. In short,

“President Trump will be in New Jersey. Obama held concerts and Thomas Jefferson died.” I will take two out of three of those celebrations! According to India Times reporter, Chidanand Rajghatta, on

demand and at the orders of President Trump, we will also have a new parade in Washington when “the US military will march down Pennsylvania Avenue in a parade expected to surpass France's famed Bastille Day.” President Trump is

said to have been impressed by the French parade that he attended in July 2017, so he has ordered the Pentagon to roll out a huge parade this upcoming fourth of July to try and top the French celebrations. There have been a lot of speculations all over social media that the Mayor of Washington DC could deny the Pentagon a parade permit. We will have to wait and see how our President decides to celebrate this special holiday. But one thing you can count on, no matter in which city or state you are in, and that is… fireworks, lots and lots of fireworks! A Boston Globe reporter, Evan Horowitz wrote, “if you gathered all the fireworks that Americans will set off this week” (4th of July), “they would weigh more than the Statue of Liberty, cost more than a Powerball jackpot and release more energy than 100,000 bolts of lightning.” Wow! Can you believe that? That would certainly give my next-door neighbors something ELSE to complain about! Channelside is one of the best places to watch fireworks in Tampa, with both their Red, White and Blue Festival from Cotanchobee Park,

and major displays at Bay Plaza. Safety Harbor will also be sponsoring their yearly fireworks extravaganza. If you are in Pinellas, don’t miss the fun in the St. Petersburg area. Four of the many attractions will include Gulfport’s July 4th Party, St. Pete’s Spa Beach show, Largo’s celebration and Clearwater Celebrates America. Not to be outdone, Pasco county will be hosting their celebration from Waterfront Park and these are just a few of the many celebration sites. Tampabay.com reports that “There are plenty of options, including massive shows in Tampa, St. Pete and New Port Richey as well as smaller shows across Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando and Sarasota counties. Lots of fireworks for everyone! Check the Internet to see what events will be taking place in your neighborhood. As we watch the bombs bursting in air this 4th of July, stop for a moment and remember our brave fighting men and women, around the world, who are still protecting our freedom today. Then relax, enjoy … and pass me another hotdog.

Tech Talk with Bob: Wi-Fi: Part 5 – SECURITY By Bob Dalles

Greetings, I hope this column finds you well! I am going to wrap up our discussion with the most important element regarding Wireless Fidelity or Wi-Fi. That is security. Wi-Fi speeds and distances are important considerations, but security is paramount. If you are able to connect your computer, tablet, phone or other device to the internet without using a wire, then you are connected to a wireless network. Guess what? If you can connect to that wireless network, so can anyone else who is in range of your Wi-Fi Router. Remember the box usually setup by your internet service provider? That is your Wi-Fi router which is your gateway to the internet. In my last column I gave you the specific distances of the Wi-Fi (802.11) standards. If you are not

18

sure which 802.11 standard you are using, then to be safe, assume yours is the farthest reaching distance; approximately 1200 feet. Your next door neighbors, and perhaps even the neighbors beyond them, and neighbors behind you and even across the street, can be in range to connect to your Wi-Fi. Someone parked in front of your home or business can probably detect and potentially connect to your Wi-Fi and use your internet connection. You do not want that to happen. Every time someone connects to your Wi-Fi, the speed for each

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • info@NNLFlorida.com

device connected can slow down. You will not maintain the full speed for which you are paying. More importantly, your internet connection can be used to steal your identity and for other illegal purposes. You are not as anonymous as you may think you are on the internet. Data sent from your internet connection can be traced back to you. I am not trying to scare you, but those who do not secure their networks and computers become potential victims for opportunistic internet criminals. An unsecure Wi-Fi network is like leaving your car door unlocked. It makes it so much easier to break into. If an internet criminal comes up against a secured network they are likely to move on to an easier target. Good Wi-Fi routers use encryption methods known as WEP, WPA, and WPA2 which scramble your Wi-Fi signal to protect it from

JUNE 2018

others trying to use your internet connection. These encryption methods must be available on not only the Wi-Fi router, but all the computers and devices connected to the Wi-Fi router. A strong password should always be required to connect to your Wi-Fi. Be proactive when it comes to security. For your peace of mind I highly urge you to have a professional evaluate your system to be certain it is properly configured. Have a tech question? Email it to TechTalkTBNL@BobTheComputerGuy.N ET. Questions will be selected by the popularity of a topic and answered in this column. If you have a more urgent need or have a unique situation you may schedule an appointment with one of my Professionally Certified Technicians by calling 727-5344000. Until next time, stay safe on the internet!

Making a Difference, One Charity at a Time – The Life Amplified Story By Tom Bostock Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines “life’ as “a principle or force that is considered to underlie the distinctive quality of animate beings” and ‘amplify,’ “to make larger or greater (as in amount, importance, or intensity).” Separately, they are two innocuous terms, but united on a theatrical stage with a local charity as the recipient of all proceeds earned, they are an unforgettable, delightfully entertaining experience. Picture this scene. You are sitting in raised seating in a community theater as the house lights dim and a spotlight focusses center stage. A local radio, television or community celebrity reads individually prepared biographies as you are treated to a variety show by some of the most talented performers in the Tampa Bay area. No sooner have the lilting strains of one professionally-sounding, mellow-toned singer’s voice faded on the stage, then the next act, a young comedian, pokes fun at every day life and the foibles of being human; you

22

laugh so hard that tears are running down your cheeks and your side hurts. A poet is next, who reflects on life and challenge. This is followed, in close succession, by a mind reader who astounds you and an equally baffling magician; the talent just keeps coming. Up to two entertaining hours pass in what feels like an instant. After the final act and the standing ovation, you join your fellow theatergoers and mingle with the performers in an intimate setting outside of the main theater. You have just enjoyed the Life Amplified experience! Life Amplified is a spoken word and variety showcase, one women’s answer to helping local, “Mom and Pop” charities, the grassroots ones that don’t receive the attention or have the resources of the other large national ones that are competing for your charity dollars. It is a wonderful way to spend a portion of your entertainment budget while helping others in need. Entrepreneur and founder, Deb Kelley, the architect of Life

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • info@NNLFlorida.com

Amplified, a writer, reporter, playwright, theater critic, graphic and web designer, explains the reason why she started Life Amplified, more than five years ago, on her website (lifeamplifiedshocase.com). “Life Amplified is a talent showcase with a timely platform/message benefiting a selected local organization and is the philanthropic side of The WriteOne Creative Services.” Deb stresses that Life Amplified is not a charity, just one determined women’s attempt to

help her community. of themed spoken word “Life Amplified is a 100% volunteer spoken word and talent variety showcase began in January 2013 to benefit worthy local organizations helping our community. With shows bi or triannually each year, all proceeds raised go to the selected organization. Until there aren’t charities in need, Life Amplified will be there to help.” Deb had been a freelance writer for AOL Patch for years. After three

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

years of interviewing founders of charities and “listening to their incredible stories,” she decided to do something about it. An interview with now defunct Tampa Pitcher Show secured her first venue; Life Amplified was born as a spokenword-showcase. Originally, a one-time event, its successful debut in 2013 made it an annual event. Offers from local performers transformed it into the variety showcase that graces the stage today. Prior to Tampa Pitcher Show’s closing, Carrollwood Players, a local community theater that Deb sat on the board of, offered their theater for Deb’s shows. Many local charities have been the recipient of Life Amplified dollars. The first show, featuring two singers, nine poets, a comedian/impressionist and a mind reader was a huge success despite Deb’s lack of production experience. The proceeds have benefited K9’s for Veterans, human trafficking awareness, bully prevention, the Crisis Center of Tampa, Military Sexual Trauma (MST) as well as EQUUSOLUTIONS who use equine therapy for survivors of PTSD and MST. When Animal’s Coalition

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

of Tampa’s building was severely damaged by arson, it was Life Amplified’ s, Paws Up show that made them the recipient of the shows funds. The community has recognized Deb’s tireless efforts with many awards and accolades over the years. Deb Kelley, through her Life Amplified “KIDZ HELPING KIDZ” show, emceed and performed entirely by children, was recognized by Fox TV as their ‘Hometown Hero.’ The ‘sold out’ event was performed to a standing-room-only crowd. Bay News 9 also recognized Deb as Bay News 9 Every Day Hero in 2016. Life Amplified is one woman’s answer to not standing on the sidelines. How much can one person do? You’ll never know until you try. I’ve always heard that if you want something done, ask a busy person. Somehow, they find the time to get it done. I think Deb summed it up best when she said, “in the time it takes to make an excuse, you can make a difference!” Visit her website (lifemaplifiedshowcase.com) or Facebook page (facebook.com/lifeamplifiedvarietysh owcase) for more information.

Stretch your way to fitness at Trinity Yoga Studio By Lisa Stephens

Trinity Yoga Studio offers an oasis of relaxation, fitness and superior yoga instruction for the novice and even most advanced yoga enthusiast. Owner and instructor, Janel Norton welcomes all students with an interest in yoga and will help guide you to the classes that will enable you to reach your health and fitness goals. Originally from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Norton left her hometown to join the Air Force to be a Combat Camera Photojournalist. This opportunity led her to cover various combats around the world including the Panama Invasion, Monrovia, Liberia and the Bosnian Conflict! In 1994, she worked for the United Nations documenting humanitarian aid convoys throughout the war-torn region before returning to the United States in 1996 when she entered college. As a student of Western Kentucky University, she majored in photojournalism and

26

cultural anthropology. After landing a job with the St. Petersburg Times, she was assigned to cover a story about Bayflite medical helicopter operations. It was then that she met future husband Ray Norton. “He was my reason I hung up my globtrotting days and made Trinity my home,” she explained. Yoga, she said, was out of necessity to keep her sanity at first. A friend noticed her stress and anxiety when dealing with career struggles and life changes. “Try Yoga,” her friend said and suggested a nearby studio. “I attended my first hot power yoga class and was completely hooked!” she explained. She carved out as much time as she could to spend time on her yoga mat. “If only I would have had this when I was living in all those war zones,” she said. She realizes now how helpful that would have been to her when dealing with the stress of it all. Realizing the benefits of yoga, she quickly pursued a yoga teacher training program to learn more about the practice of yoga and why it made her feel so good!

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • info@NNLFlorida.com

Her first class at Trinity Yoga Studio was in 2011. Original owners, Anne Bromberg and Christina Chatfield, were her inspiration to continue to dive deeper into the practice. She never imagined the workout yoga would give her. After only a few months, Norton saw changes in her body she never imagined were possible. “I felt I could handle stress so much better out in the world,” she explained.

JUNE 2018

Today, Norton is equipped with several certifications; a 200 YTT( Yoga Teacher Training) Yoga Alliance Certificate, Warriors at East Level 3 Certification and an iRest level 2 certification. She will have her YTT 500 completed prior to publication of this article. “Yoga found me,” she said of the career change she faced in her 40’s, while working on her M.A. in strategic communications management at

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

Janel Norton, owner, Trinity Yoga Studio

University of South Florida (USF). After receiving her 200 YTT certification, she approached the owners of Trinity Yoga Studio to ask if she could teach a class. She was allowed to teach a Hatha class once a week. Shortly thereafter, one of the owners approached her to let her know she would be selling her half of the studio. Norton jumped at the opportunity to become part owner of the studio and quickly began teaching ten classes a week. “It was baptism by fire but I loved it,” she

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

explained. “I knew this studio was poised for growth,” she said. With her husband at her side helping her with all the IT requirements to grow, the couple put their heads and talents together to bring Trinity Yoga Studio into current times with internet presence and updated payment options for their clients. “We started adding more classes, more teachers, introduced some fun Aerial Swing Yoga classes and lots of workshops,” she said. Their efforts certainly paid off! “Our student base quadrupled,” she shared. To meet demand for space, a second yoga room was added so they could run several classes simultaneously. In an effort to reach others, Norton co-founded Veterans Alternative, a 501c3 non-profit aimed at providing alternative therapies for veterans and active duty service men and women returning home from war. While this effort took her away from the daily requirements to run the studio, she purchased the other half of Trinity Yoga Studio and hired a studio manager to help run the daily operations while she focused on the

Veterans Alternative side of things as the Chief Operations Manager. She worked closely with veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). She furthered her education to enable her to work with veterans via training with Warriors At Ease, which taught her to teach yoga to veterans. She also gained further education from iRest (integrative restoration) which is a guided meditation technique specifically geared toward people suffering from trauma. When asked about what sets Trinity Yoga Studio apart from the many yoga studios in the surrounding area, Norton points to the diversity of instructors. “We have over 40 classes that run seven days a week and range from yin to gentle, Pilates to hot power, Hatha and lots of workshops to dive deeper into the poses or studies of yoga,” she explained. “if it wasn’t for this wonderful group of instructors, Trinity Yoga Studio wouldn’t be what it is,” she said. For first timers, the first class is only five dollars! Norton suggests a gentle yoga class for first time students. For those students already

in a regular workout program, she suggests the first class be one of their Hatha classes. If you’re already experienced in yoga and seeking an advanced class, Trinity Yoga Studio has a class for you as well! “Any of the power or hot power classes will keep you on your toes-or off- with opportunities for arm balances and head or handstand postures,” she shared. Why Yoga? Yoga results in many benefits. Among them are increased endurance, strength and flexibility, arm and shoulder strength is increased as you use your own body weight for resistance, abdominals and oblique’s are refined and toned as you build core muscles, posture begins to correct itself, hip flexors are stretched and strengthened and glutes, quads, hamstrings and calves are strengthened. Trinity Yoga Studio is located at Old CR 54, New Port Richey, FL 34653. For class information or more about the studio, visit www.trinity-yoga.com or call 727-376-5263.

“Central Park” Continued from page 1 Butch was a joy to chat with; he knew the owners, the staff, almost how everything in the menu tasted and the entire history behind the place. “I honestly love the food here, the quality is undeniable and the selection is pretty incredible! I can try something new every time I come in and never get bored. The staff is always kind and friendly and they always treat every customer like family,” says Butch. “If I don’t come in for 4 or 5 days, Chris Michael, the owner of Central Park himself, calls me to check up on me and make sure I am doing ok. That is how incredible this place is.” Butch’s continuous support and patronage managed to get a Breakfast Sandwich on the menu named after him: “The Jersey Butch,” made with Taylor Pork Roll, Eggs and Cheese. “Make sure you try it sometime, and let me know what you think!” Butch smiled before continuing to passionately talk about Central Park. “I truly cannot say enough good things about Chris, his brother Charlie or the entire Michael family,” Butch added. “They are all extraordinary people serving extraordinary food, and I am happy to support them.” Butch is more than just a regular; at Central Park he is family. But don’t worry; you don’t have to be Butch to be treated like a member of the Family! Every customer at Central Park is greeted with a smile and treated with the utmost respect by the staff and the various members of the Michael family, who work and run the day-to-day operations at the cozy family restaurant. You’ll often see Chris, his brother Charlie or their father Andy, checking on tables, saying hello to diners, and making sure everyone is enjoying their meals. “Great food and service. You cannot ask for a better place to go for a dining experience!” says Ron S. about his recent experience at Central Park Family Restaurant. “These folks truly aim to please a customer from start to finish. They personally check up on you throughout your entire meal to ensure everything is exactly the way you wanted it. You leave feeling like someone really cared how your meal was.” At Central Park Family Restaurant, there is a sign that reads; “May all who enter as guests leave as

32

friends.” This is the motto for the restaurant that really inspires owner Chris Michael on a daily basis. Chris says, “Over the years we’ve acquired customers that have walked in as a first time customer and they’ve become part of our lives, just like Butch has.” Chris added, “We couldn’t be more thankful for the continuous support we’ve received throughout the years and we hope to be able to serve the entire community for another 12 years.” The Michael family has been in the restaurant business for over 40 years! And they have no intention of slowing down. “We’re going to be opening a new restaurant on state road 54, right in front of the Ballantrae subdivision within the next month or so,” says Chris. “It will be called ‘Fish Bowl Kitchen,’ and it will be more of an Asian-Fusion style of restaurant. We will be serving fresh seafood dishes, poke bowls and acai bowls.” Pronounced “POH-Keh” bowls, consist of chunks of raw, marinated fish –usually tuna or salmon—that is then tossed over rice and topped with fresh veggies, seaweed, sesame seeds and umami sauces. They are basically the new generation of sushi, but

instead of rolls, its served on bowls. “We are currently allowing our clientele to sample some of the poke bowls here at Central Park family restaurant, so they get a taste of what’s coming soon to the area,” says Chris. “We’re hoping to receive the same kind of support that we’ve received here at Central Park Family Restaurant, so stay tuned!” These poke bowls are not currently listed on their menu, but make sure to ask the staff or Chris himself about them so you get to try them before everyone else does! Altogether, the Central Park Family Restaurant menu offers costumers 10 pages of magnificent options to choose from, including all day breakfast items, mouth-watering entrees, specialty salads, skyscraper club sandwiches, half-pound Black Angus beef burgers, hot open-faced sandwiches, and so much more! The menu definitely has something for everyone; Chris likes to call it “American-Fusion” and there are literally so many affordable and delicious daily specials that he had to install a large flat-screen TV to continually scroll down all the options. There are northern favorites such as scrapple (a traditional mush of pork

combined with cornmeal and wheat flour with spices) and grilled sandwiches such as the Central Park Deluxe, made with fresh layers of pastrami and corned beef piled high on grilled, authentic N.Y. Jewish rye, swiss cheese, spicy mustard and grilled onions. Down-home southern favorites include delicious fried chicken and the newly added fried green tomatoes, which are a unique Mediterranean and southern fusion. Greek Dinner specialties include a traditional Gyro platter, chicken souvlaki, spanakopita and the Pork Chops Athena amongst others. If you love mouthwatering, gourmet burgers, then you must try “The Skyscraper,” weighing in at over two pounds, it is made with three halfpound Black Angus patties cooked to juicy perfection and topped with bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion – wow! If you’re like me and love breakfast food, you can enjoy fluffy, delectable pancakes, savory french toast, yummy waffles, breakfast sandwiches and omelets at any time of the day. There are actually over 60 types of omelets featured on the menu! Featuring a section called “omelets from around the world,” Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

With so many dishes to choose from, you are going to have to come as often as Butch does, to make sure you don’t miss out on any of their delicious creations. Honestly, you’ve got to check out all that this place has to offer for yourself. I promise you will not regret it. The hardest part of your day may just be deciding which menu item to try. During my visit, I could not make up my mind and told Chris to surprise me. He brought out one of the most recent customer favorite dishes; the “Portabello Chicken Caprese Tower,” juicy, tender, lightly breaded and perfectly seasoned chicken breasts were topped with a gigantic, perfectly Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

grilled portabello mushroom cap, and finished off with a caprese tower of fresh mozzarella cheese and tomatoes with fresh basil and drizzled with balsamic vinegar. Yum! Make sure you leave room for dessert! Central Park’s pies are from J. J. Gandy, including the key lime pie that made J. J. Gandy’s locally famous. And Chris says you’ve got to try their cheesecakes! They answered all my questions, even the dumb ones. . . Not only did they install a great system and clean the ducts, but they also put down a new concrete slab, painted inside the air handler closet, cleaned up after themselves and much more. I especially liked that I was emailed every time someone new was coming to my home so I knew exactly who to expect. Their customer service is incredible. I called on a Saturday to the emergency service and was called immediately back and was scheduled for our install within hours. I will be using them again for sure.”

Hurricane Prep Hurricane season is right around the corner. If you were one of the unfortunate homeowners stuck without power for an extended period of time last year after Hurricane Irma, Cornerstone can help. While they had been installing whole home standby generators before the hurricane last year, Dana says it was after the hurricane that they realized the true value of the systems. “We were without power at our office for 7 days,” says Dana, “but we installed the standby generator and were able to get our office running 2 days after the storm.” Dana says that Cornerstone installs Generac Home Standby
