“All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.” — George Washington All across the country we celebrated Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 13th. On this day we honored the women who brought us into the world, who shaped us, nurtured us, and showed us what unconditional love is truly all about. During the entire month of May, a lot of our advertisers will be running incredible Mother’s Day specials, so make sure to check them out. Our moms are definitely one of the most important people in our lives, they are simultaneously our biggest fan and our harshest critic. Our Mother’s demands can sometimes be unattainable, but they are meant to make us a better person. Moms are that little voice inside our heads that remind us to be polite to others, to bring an umbrella, to eat breakfast and to iron your t-shirts (because you never know who you’ll meet that day.) Moms are the ones we all run to for comfort, especially when we are sick (or at least the majority of us do) even if we’re adults and have kids of our own. Nobody takes care of us better than mom. Her warm hugs and voice make us automatically feel better, no matter what.

Nobody will ever spoil us, love us and take better care of us than our mothers. Being a mother remains a lifelong commitment. Even after a child is grown, graduated and employed, mom is still mom, and moms will always worry. And when the world is harsh, when life pokes us in the eye and laughs at us, it is often our first instinct to seek comfort in a mother’s love. And let’s not get started on their cooking skills! Mothers always cook the best meals! I don’t know how they do it, but nobody can cook quite like your mom! If you’re anything like me you’ve probably said these words before: “I have the best mom in the world.” Even though she drives me crazy at times (ok, the majority of the time) I know my mother always wants the best for me. My mother is selfless, smart, funny, beautiful and adores me and my sister. I can truly say that, in the same words of George Washington, all that I am, and all that I have, I owe to her (and also to my amazing father, up in heaven.) I couldn’t imagine where I would be without the loving parents I was blessed with. And speaking about fathers... the month of June is quickly approaching, and we get to celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday, June 17th. This will be the first year I will not get to be able to see, hug, kiss or even talk to my father, since he passed away last year. If you are

lucky enough to still have your father around, make sure you hug them and kiss them and let them know how much they mean to you. A lot of exciting familyfriendly events will be happening all over the city in the upcoming month(s), so make sure you take your parents out for a nice day of family fun. And last but not least, I want to take this opportunity to tell my Mom how much I love her, and thank you, for everything she’s done and continues to do for me and all of our family. And to my dad, who I hope is in a better place... I just want to say, I love you and I miss you so much, there’s no day I do not think about you, and I do pray one day we can all be together again. To my mom and dad inlaw, Doreen and Tim Selby, founders of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles, I want to say thank you...for all you do, for always greeting me with a smile and a big hug, thanks for loving me like a daughter and making me feel like part of the family. I love you all so much! From part of the entire team of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles, I hope you had a great Mother’s Day, and we hope you have an amazing Father’s Day. We hope you are surrounded by loved ones today. If they can’t make it home, we hope they at least call.

Whether you’re looking for a small-scale residential repair or a large commercial roof replacement, rest assured that the professionals at Suncoast Roofing Solutions will work with the highest efficiency, and provide you with the most ethical service at competitive prices. Previous Suncoast Roofing Solutions Customer, Donovan M. says, “We were preparing to sell our home and needed a new roof; our realtor recommended Suncoast Roofing and we found some other roofers on our own. No comparison- Suncoast had a very competitive price, in fact they came in just a bit under their initial assessment. Our roof was in really good condition so we weren’t hit with any surprises; Doug did explain to us not only the best case scenario, but what the associated costs could be with a worst case scenario. That’s good to know in terms of budgeting. The work was done fast, the crew was courteous and neat, and the price was more than fair. Suncoast pulled all the permits and followed up with a final inspection with the city. Would I use them again- absolutely.” Tile Roof Experts Suncoast Roofing Solutions’

main area of expertise is installing and repairing tile roofs. Clay and concrete tiles are among the oldest roofing materials known to man. Modern roofing tiles are much more technologically advanced than their ancestors hundreds of years ago. With Suncoast Roofing Solutions you can choose from a vast selection of designs, colors, and high-performance finishes. Many small businesses in Tampa have tile roofing. Tile roofing looks great, lasts a long time, and in many areas the managing association code requires it. Although tile lasts a long time, it does require the same maintenance and repair that any other commercial building’s roof needs. When you choose a company who specializes in commercial tile repair, your roof will be repaired properly. Many Tampa homes also boast tile roofing, giving them a pleasing appearance and an extra luxurious look. When you build a high quality

tile roof, you’re investing in the long-term future of your property. Suncoast Roofing Solutions can help you achieve that dream. “We can even work within deedrestricted communities to build a luxury tile roof that is in full compliance with homeowner’s association rules and other regulations,” says Doug. “Our tile roof replacement company offers a deluxe installation and repair service. We walk you through every step of the process, from initial consultation to final site cleanup. We use the finest professional materials, including Eagle Tile, Entegra Tile, Owens Corning, Polyglass, Tamko and GAF. We stand by our materials and workmanship with a 100% guarantee. If a customer is ever unsatisfied, we’ll make it right!” Crystal Cabrera has this to say about her recent experience with Suncoast Roofing Solutions; “I am a new home owner and new to the Tampa area so I called

a ton of roofers to get an estimate on a small studio I have in my backyard. Half of the companies never called back or they wanted to charge me an arm and a leg. Doug sent someone over right away to check out the roof and gave me an estimate that was better then anyone else I contacted. We scheduled when the roof was going to be done and on the days they were at my home they didn’t leave a mess or in the way. They did an amazing job and the roof looks beautiful. A week or so later i was cleaning the gutters on my main house and noticed I had a hole. I sent a Doug a message and he came right out to check on it, he had a guy out within the week to patch my roof. I had the best experience with Suncoast Roofing Solutions and I highly recommend them they are very professional and get the job done!! Thank you so much Doug and the Suncoast Roofing Team for doing such wonderful job!” Some benefits of having a tile roof include: • Tiles are environmentally friendly. They are made from natural materials and are fully recyclable at the end of their lifespan. • Natural tiles can last up to a hundred years when they are properly installed and cared for. • Tiles will not rot in moist

climates, making them ideal for Central Florida and the Tampa Bay Area. • Clay and concrete roof tiles are highly energy efficient. They create a ventilated space within the roof itself, insulating the building and lowering the cost of air conditioning. • If repairs are necessary, Suncoast Roofing contractors are always available to restore or replace your roof tiles. Why Choose Suncoast Roofing Solutions? Whether you’re a business owner or a home owner, when you work with Suncoast Roofing Solutions, you are guaranteed to get the highest level of personalized service. “We maintain two separate roofing divisions,” says Doug. “A commercial division and a residential division. Caring for your Trees for the 2018 Hurricane Season - ALLPRO Tree and Landscaping Inc

By Tom Bostock

Hurricanes are some of the most destructive forces on earth, as many Florida homeowners can attest to. Wind damage to homes and property can run into the millions of dollars. The 2018 hurricane season, according to tbo. com, will be another active year. The CSU Department of Atmospheric Science Tropical Meteorology Project’s forecast was just released Thursday. The report should serve as “a call to action” to all Florida homeowners; “70 days during which a named storm will be present, 30 hurricane days and seven major hurricane days. Median seasons see about 60 named storm days, 21 hurricane days and four major hurricane days. University of Colorado predicts “14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes, packing winds of at least 111 mph!” The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane wind scale paints an informative picture of potential

14 MAY 2018

damage to your trees from a hurricane, particularly improperly pruned trees. Using a rating system of 1 – 5, it warns that, at 74 to 95 mph, a category 1 hurricane can cause damage. “Large branches of trees will snap, and shallowly rooted trees may be toppled,” possibly causing “extensive damage to power lines” creating outages that can last “a few to several days.” Downed trees can block roads, delaying the response time for emergency crews. Snapped branches can become lethal projectiles. The time to prepare is now. When you take the steps that you need to make your home secure, don’t forget one important element that is often overlooked and can cause damage to your home, your trees. The solution is not the removal of trees but taking proper preventative care of them. According to certified arborist and owner of ALLPRO Tree and Landscape Inc, Pete Spiridis, a lot was learned from the damage that was caused to and by neighborhood trees,

during the 2017 hurricane season. He said that “more of the trees that failed were improperly pruned trees.” Proper pruning not only improves your trees’ overall health, it ensures that your family will be able to enjoy the shade of their favorite trees for many years to come. Pete encourages you to call him at either (727-409-3315 or 813-244-9234) or visit the website at www.myallpro.com to make your appointment for a free, no obligation inspection of your trees. Arboreal diseases, detected early, can be controlled and cured. Unpruned or improperly pruned trees are more susceptible to disease than properly maintained ones. ALLPRO not only diagnoses and crafts unique landscaping solutions for your grounds and trees, but also uncovers any underlying causes that may be contributing to your tree/ landscape issues. A full-service tree and landscaping service, ALLPRO provides tree trimming, tree removal, tree stump grinding, landscape design and installation as well as

yard clean up and all landscaping services. As Pete explains on his website, “Trees in urban areas of Tampa Bay endure especially brutal stimuli. Some trees do not have the genetic predisposition to deal with these forces.” At ALLPRO, the arborists “customtailor solutions that promote the health of your unique trees” If you are wondering if ALLPRO lives

up to its reputation of providing “the elite service that you deserve,” as their website pledges, why don’t we just ask the experts? National online home service guru, Angie’s List, was impressed enough to present ALLPRO with their “Super Service Award.” The Better Business Bureau, who analyzes and rates companies, according to both the quality of the service they provide, and the complaints received about them, awarded ALLPRO Tree and Landscaping Inc. its highest rating, an A+!!! So many of their satisfied customers are also happy to confirm the excellence of the

For Advertising Info 813-928-6124 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit nnlflorida.com

service that they received from ALLPRO. If word of mouth advertising is the best form of advertising, David K. is one of their best advertisers. According to David, “the service from ALLPRO was phenomenal. They were very responsive to the initial inquiry, highly competitive for the work that needed to be completed and they were extremely professional when completing the work. We are extremely pleased with ALLPRO.” Roger M. agreed as well, noting that he had used ALLPRO to remove several trees for a pool. “Job well done and will use them again.“ Susan Y. said “I would highly recommend ALLPRO Tree and Landscaping.” Julie K. was also in agreement when she said that she “can’t say enough good things about them.” Visit their website at www.myallpro.com to read more of these positive testimonials. With hurricane season just around the corner, while you are preparing your home, don’t forget your trees. Dead branches and over-hanging limbs represent potential hazards. The folks at ALLPRO are ready to help. Just call (727-409-3315 or 813244-9234) and don’t forget your free, no obligation inspection.

A Cancer Patient’s Guardian Angels – Women with Purpose By Tom Bostock

The statistics from the American Cancer Society (cancer. org), are a staggering, eye-opening reality! It is estimated that, in 2018, there will be 1,735,350 new cancer cases diagnosed in the United States, 135,170 in Florida alone. It also predicts an additional 609,640 deaths, 45,030 of which will occur right here in our own backyard, Florida. Cancer is an equal opportunity destroyer of lives and families. The costs associated with its treatment continue to escalate, despite the FDA’s approval of both new and generic prescription drugs. The headline on the HealthDay website, (consumerhealthday. com), reported about one cancer drug, typical of the continuing increase in the cost of these lifesaving, prescription medicines: “Soaring Prices Keep Leukemia Drugs from Patients, Experts Say $100,000-a-year meds seen as obstacle to treatment.” “Eleven of 12 cancer drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2012 were priced above $100,000 a year,” the report noted. “And average monthly cancer drug prices have nearly doubled over the past decade – from $5,000 a month to more than $10,000 a month.” In a recent speech, (Medscape. com viewarticle/89121#vp_1), FDA commissioner Gottlieb, M.D. decried cancer patients’ plight: “Rising copays and coinsurance are pushing far too many patients into a financial no-man’s land where sometimes they must literally choose between exhausting their bank accounts or going without access to potentially effective treatments.” Award winning Los Angeles Times reporter Michael Hilzik questioned the FDA’s commitment to control costs with a quote from Dr. Greene of Johns Hopkins in the Journal of the American Medical Assn.: “Greene pegs his analysis to the run-up in prices of generic drugs whose manufacturers face little or no competition, and therefore almost no disincentive to keep prices reasonable.” Who can afford the $100,000-a-year or more in prohibitive cancer treatment costs and still pay every-day, non-medical expenses like mortgage, rent, gas, car and

16 MAY 2018

repairs, electricity, utilities and, most importantly, food? This is the quandary that many cancer patients face daily, but for those living primarily in the Pinellas county area, there is hope. It is hope in the form of a wonderful, caring non-profit organization, Women with Purpose, started by founder, Jane Morse-Swett and her friends Millie Diaz, Patricia Schachtel, Bonnie Scholz, Dawn Lane and Barbara Austin. Each caring lady is still an integral part of this six-year-old organization. When huge charities only receive a two-star out of a possible fourstar rating, (charitynavigator.org), in part, because of their huge overhead and fundraising costs, it is comforting to know that 95% of every donated dollar goes directly to the patients and their families through Women with Purpose. This is an entirely volunteer organization. There is minimal overhead because everyone, including the founder, Jane Morse-Swett, willingly volunteers their time and energy. Jane defines the role of Women with Purpose as: “providing for the non-medical expenses for cancer patients.” These expenses can include a variety of products, from school supplies to toilet paper and many other needs not covered by food stamps and other government programs. Their latest partnership with Beach Community Food Pantry in Indian Rocks Beach will now make fresh fruits, vegetables, and meat available to the clients that they are serving. If you are wondering if it works, read what several recipients have to say about Women with Purpose. On their Facebook page, (facebook.com/WWPFL). (Names have been listed as initials to preserve client confidentiality). M.D. was especially grateful for their help: “Forget Mother Theresa, Jane Morse-Swett and her awesome members of Women with Purpose are true saints helping those that the big $$$ charities forget about because the photo op won’t bring funds. These women give selflessly to support local cancer patients with financial support for nonmedical needs, rent, car payments utility bills, food etc. …” “These wonderful women need a sponsor, a bank, a car dealer, a

Jane Morse-Swett, Founder of Women With Purpose builder, a business with heart and purpose that can help them do their great work. To support Jane and WWP is what it means to truly give back.” Another recipient, G.G., lent her voice to their Facebook review when she wrote, “Thank you so much for helping my family when we needed it the most. You are such an awesome asset to our community.” If you want your donation to help patients in need and not be diluted by excessive administrative and fund-raising costs, Women with Purpose should be the

destination for your charity dollars. For more information, to receive help, or to donate to this worthy community cause, visit their website (womenwithpurposefl.org) or Facebook page (Facebook.com/ WWPFL). Women with Purpose continues to prove every day that we are our “brother’s keeper.” M.M. said it best on their website: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

Skyler Pearson has always had a passion for helping others achieve their most beautiful body. Originally starting out in hair removal, Skyler soon found his calling in the world of body contouring. Transforming Image was born first in Arizona before expanding into the Tampa market just last year. Today, Skyler and his team of professionals are closing in on 20,000 treatments between Coolsculpting and V Shape Ultrasound technology! Transforming Image clients experience wonderful results and Skyler attributes that to what he calls a very good aesthetic eye. “Within just a few seconds into our consultation I visualize what their best results will look like. I then explain to them my suggested treatment, what results they can expect over a specific period of time, and why I believe they are best suited for Coolsculpting, V Shape, or a combination of both,” says Pearson.

them in an easy, non-intrusive fashion that exercise and diet can’t achieve as quickly and effectively. Keep the Love, Lose the Handles!

Coolsculpting:

It’s called stubborn fat for a reason! No matter how much you exercise or how healthy you eat, it can be impossible to lose those annoying muffin tops, love handles or the dreaded belly pooch. In the past, you’ve been left with two options; live with them or think surgery. Then came Coolsculpting! Coolsculting targets fat cells alone, eliminating

The areas best suited for Coolsculpting include, love handles, belly rolls, inner and outer thighs, double chin, arm fat and bra area fat. Since it’s inception, Coolsculpting has absolutely changed the bodies of 10s of thousands of people just like you so the question is, are you ready to spend your day freezing your fat away!?

V Shape Ultra:

V Shape Ultra is the latest technology that

will not only contour your body but actually destroy and eliminate excess fat all without surgery! Ultra is the latest technology in nonsurgical lipolysis. The clinical benefits include the removal of fat non-invasivly, tightening of skin and improved body contour. Ultra is truly a real alternative to surgical procedures as it ensures effective and visible results that are lasting without the need for incisions and best of all, no scars! Other contouring devices utilizing red or green lasers only shrink the fat cells so therefore results are usually only temporary. V Shape destroys the fat cells just how Coolsculpting does without the cold. There is no pain with Ultra, and since the

that are being destroyed. It’s only been a week since the treatment and Skyler says we have 2 more to go, but our skin certainly feels tighter in our abdominal area already so it has our endorsement. Transforming Image wants to be known as your one-stop-shop for all your aesthetic needs. Safe, non-surgical, body contouring, fat reduction services utilizing Coolsculpting and V Shape Ultra are guaranteed technologies offered by Transforming Image with optional insurance. “Your Image is my business and that’s why I guarantee it!” Transforming Image also offers Micro Needling and Hydra Facials.

treatment follows your body’s exact contour, the results are uniform over the entire treated areas versus other treatments on the market. With us being one of the first centers in Florida to offer this, we can pair it together with Coolsculpting and kill even more fat cells than any center offering only Coolsculpting. Utilizing both technologies we are talking about 50% to 60% more killed fat than anyone else! The Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles team had an opportunity to see what all the fuss was about last week and the consensus was that V Shape Ultra was completely painless during and after the treatment. Unlike Coolsculpting, the V Shape machine warms up as it kills fat cells but not enough to cause much, if any discomfort. There truly is no downtime after the treatment is completed. The only thing that’s necessary after the treatment is to drink a lot of water to help flush the toxins and fat cells

“We look forward to working with you soon and can’t wait to give you the body you’ve only dreamed of. Oh yes, before I forget, If you’ve already done Coolsculpting with someone else and you aren’t completely satisfied, come see me for a FREE second opinion on what can be done better!” says Skyler.

Remember, NO SURGERY, NO DOWNTIME and in-house financing is available!!! ***FOR SPECIAL OFFERS SEE AD ON BACK COVER*** Open 6 days a week from 8am-8pm to accommodate your busy schedule.

Garage Guru

What’s going on with my car?

Brought to you by Christian Brothers Automotive, New Tampa and Wesley Chapel

New Tires Already? I rarely drive it? Dear Garage Guru, “I have my dream car, an Aston Martin. I’m almost retired. I decided I deserve it. So, I take my Aston Martin out about once a month for fun and to keep everything moving. A tire guy says “Chris, you need new tires.” Only 14,000 miles on these tires in the last 5 years. How could I need new tires and what is dry rot anyway?” OOH, first things first. You probably need someone to take your Aston Martin out once in a while to keep things moving. Look no further than the email address below. I’m volunteering. With that said, Chris, I hear your despair. Tires should take you more than 14,000 miles, and I bet the tread still looks very deep. Now, I’m going to upset you more. Don’t just look at your tires, look at belts and hoses. They may be going bad, too, even if you rarely drive it. And that includes radiator and brake hoses, AND fuel lines, as well as your serpentine belt (That’s the belt that turns your alternator, air conditioner, power steering and other parts that spin). How many of you reading this article are retired, keep your car in the garage, drive very little, and are thinking this car should last me forever? Unfortunately, normal aging is constantly occurring. Even though we all love Florida, Florida doesn’t always return the love. The sunny days that draw us all here and the heat speed up the aging process. Anything rubber deteriorates quickest – tires, hoses, lines, and belts. The heat bakes tire rubber and dries them out even in the protection of the garage, often in as little as 3 years. And the belts and hoses are not far behind. A couple months ago Garage Guru did an overview on tires that you might find interesting. Otherwise, let’s focus specifically on the horrible sounding key words you mentioned: DRY ROT! Check a new tire. You will find they actually feel a little oily. But, as the oils are baked out of the tire, the dry rubber

begins to rot. Go out in the garage and look at your tires. Bring a flash light. The first sign of rot is usually cracks developing in the bottom of the tread grooves. Then check the sidewalls because the second sign is a line of cracks forming in the middle of the side wall of the tire. Then finally, you will see rubber cracking off in little chunks on the edges of the tread. By the time you see the second sign, the line of cracks in the sidewall just starting, it is time to safely replace your tires. Now hear this “REPLACE THE TIRE EVEN IF THE TREAD IS STILL DEEP.” Did I say that loud enough? However, if the rubber is chunking off the edges of the tread, there is no safe time left. Change those tires now, not next week, and definitely not after the trip you planned to Miami. Rotting rubber detaches from the core of the tire. You’ve swerved around those 5 foot long strips of rubber tread stretched across the highway. That’s where they came from – a dry rotting tire whose tread has detached from the casing, initially forming a bubble or blister under the tread just before tearing off and completely coming loose from the casing. We don’t even want to think about what that driver felt when he first heard the bump – bump – bump of the tire blister bouncing off the pavement, and then heard the loose tread start slapping violently against the under body of the car, and then finally felt the car swerve back and forth when only the tire casing was left to drive on. Did I frighten you? I hope so. This is serious. Ok! You’ve got the scoop and know how to inspect for dry rot and what to do about it. It’s an Aston Martin for cripes sakes. Baby needs new shoes. It’s not worth the risk to see just how far you can go before the tread comes loose. Leave that to Kramer. The next question is what tires to put on. You don’t have to buy

expensive name brand tires. There are plenty of unknown name tires that are high quality and that I wouldn’t mind putting on my Aston Martin - - as if I will ever have one. That’s a good topic or an upcoming article – unknown name tires. Hope this helps and thanks for listening. We are eager to hear about your car concerns.
