Spring is here, and along with it, comes the best King Mackerel and Tarpon fishing of the year in Tampa Bay! I’m really excited to catch these fish with my friends, family and readers of Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles! As many of you know I do contests throughout the year and give away fishing charters as grand prizes. I’m not going to lie, in 2013 when my sister called me and asked if I wanted to get my Captain’s license with her, I said “C’mon, you just want to be known as ‘Captain Morgan’ don’t you?!” I didn’t take it seriously, and never at the time thought either of us would ever use our license. But now just about every one of my weekends is either booked for a charter, or I’m taking out clients and readers on a fishing adventure! I’m really proud to announce that my very talented and beautiful Fiancé, Carla, has joined our team as Creative Director! Carla is one of the most creative designers I’ve ever seen! If you notice that this issue is a little more appealing to the eye than anything else you’ve seen in New Tampa, it’s all Carla. Carla is also an amazing writer, and will be doing a number of stories for us including the “Dining with Carla” Section. Vuelo Mexican Grill was her first assignment so be sure to check out that story on page 6! If the “Dining with” sounds familiar, you may remember my Grandmother Elaine who did the “Dining with Elaine” section about 10 years ago. She sadly passed in 2009 but I know she has been looking down from above and I 100% know she would love Carla. My Grandma was Italian and Carla, although from Venezuela and sounds like Sophia Vergara (at least I think so) is of Italian descent. They both share a passion for

cooking and great food! I’m so excited to add Carla to my family!

Continuing a Family Recipe of Success My Father Tim Selby started publishing in Tampa almost 25 years ago and our magazines have always been family owned and operated, so Carla fits right in with our team. Speaking of our team, and speaking of family, my Uncle Jim O’ Reilly has been working with my Dad since early 2004 and has been our General Manager since 2007. It’s likely, if you’ve ever called the office, you’ve had the pleasure of speaking with him. I sold my first ad for my Dad in 2006 as a senior in High School. After I finished up with my University schooling, and before starting my own branches of Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles in the Carrollwood area in 2013 and expanding back into New Tampa last year, I helped my Dad as he expanded into 4 markets. My Mother, Doreen, has also been my Dad’s billing manager since day one and now my Aunt Tina (Jim’s Wife) helps my Mom. Tony Sica, Dave Do and Kim Thomas may not be blood family but they have been working with us for over 10 years! We all have the same goal of providing this wonderful place we call home with a useful and informative guide all about New Tampa and surrounding areas. Our publication, both in print and online serves as the perfect “Local Go-To Guide” for neighborhood businesses and events. Thanks for reading this edition Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles and Thank you for being LOYAL TO LOCAL!

Is Morris Bridge Road about to become a BIGGER traffic nightmare? By Matt Selby

Morris Bridge Rd. is already very busy, but with thousands of new homes approved to be built, it’s going to become yet another road that many of us will avoid, if possible, at peak traffic times. Now that the re-zoning has been approved, construction will likely begin within weeks. Traveling south from 54 on Morris Bridge, the once cow pastured, rural looking areas will be replaced with brand new neighborhoods on both sides of the two-lane road. From what I see on mobility2040pasco.com and PlanHillsborough.com, nothing is currently planned to widen the road through 2040 but I can bet that if things end up getting dangerous or just way too bogged down we will see an improvement at a time‌ sound familiar? We will continue to update you on how things are looking throughout the year as more and more residents begin to pour in. I drive down Morris Bridge a number of times each week, like many of you, so updates should be fairly easy to obtain. With thousands of new homes and hundreds of thousands of dollars in new property taxes going to the county, I have to be optimistic in hoping some of those dollars will be allocated to not just fixing our roads but doing it quickly. Vuelo Mexican Grill Elevating Mexican Food To New Culinary Heights BY CARLA DUBIS

After a busy morning in the office, and with only a cup of coffee in my stomach, the drive to Vuelo had me both anxious and excited about the thought of Mexican Food hitting my empty belly, but little did I know, that I was about to taste some of the best Mexican food Tampa Bay has to offer. With a “scratch kitchen” approach, where everything is made in-house daily with the freshest ingredients, Vuelo (which in Spanish means “Flight”) is definitely elevating Mexican food to new culinary heights.

Located at 17641 Bruce B Downs Blvd, Tampa, FL 33647, the establishment is conveniently located in a big shopping plaza that offers ample parking with enough space to entertain big crowds. The outside walls are painted in a warm yet vibrant shade of red with orange accents. There is a spacious outdoor patio on the left, where you can enjoy the beautiful Florida weather while sipping a CasaRita (their version of the classic Margarita) and, for all you dog-lovers out there, the patio dog friendly! An outside sign reads “Saturday and Sunday Brunch, $10 unlimited Mimosas, Bloody Mary and Bloody Maria.” Alright Vuelo, you had me at unlimited mimosas, I thought to myself as I walked in. After being greeted by the friendly hostess, I first noticed the beautiful Spanish looking decor. The inside bar, had speakers playing a variety of Latin Music, high tops and bar seating area, quite a perfect place for happy hour with coworkers and friends. Which later I found out Happy Hour at Vuelo lasts from 11:30am to 6:00pm, Monday through Friday. Even better! I was delighted by the openness of the dining room, the hardwood floors, and the subtle yellowish lightning that resulted from a mix of modern lamps and natural

light reflecting from the big window panes. There’s also an intimate area with a cozy fireplace, and a spectacular salsa bar offering a variety of fresh homemade salsas, ranging from Mild Luis (the house salsa) to a fiery habanero Hot Tómas. Without having tried the food, I was already pleased by the ambiance and decor. The cleanliness of the place also set the tone for the experience… impeccable dining area and definitely clean kitchen. I sat at a table in the back, where I was brought a bowl of warm, freshly fried chips and blended salsa that was flavorful and delicious! and the best part? Chips and salsa are always complimentary at Vuelo. I headed to what is now my favorite salsa bar in town, and had a sample of ALL salsas. They were all fresh and fantastic! Make sure you try the Hot Tómas, if you like your salsas with a kick, and while you’re at it, indulge in one of the array of sophisticated margaritas, Mexican beers, or specialty crafted cocktails. My personal favorite was the deliciously exotic Frozen Mango Margarita. The menu at Vuelo Mexican Grill was originally created by celebrity Chef Mark Estee, and is now supervised by general manager and executive Chef, Michael Lopez. The menu offers several attractive options to choose from, varying from classic quesadillas and street tacos to sizzling fajitas, and bubbling molcajetes. “I added my own personal touches to the menu, and modified a few things based on what our customers said they enjoyed the most,” said Chef Michael when I asked if the menu had changed since his recent arrival at Vuelo. Chef Michael Lopez went to culinary school in Pittsburgh, and has worked in several prestigious locations, including The Venetian hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada and The New York, New York hotel. Michael came to Florida following his passion and also to be close to his family while enjoying the unbeatable Florida weather. I asked Chef Michael, Why Mexican food? to which he replied; “I have a strong passion for food, but I realized that with Mexican food, I have the ability to create everything from scratch on a daily basis, and that is what’s exciting.”

I was lucky to try several of these made-from-scratch menu items, and I was mind-blown by each one. The barbacoa burrito was the first option I enjoyed, and let me tell you…the tender and juicy beef barbacoa was better than in any other restaurant in the city. The flavor was amazing and it was slow cooked to perfection. I had to ask Chef Michael the secret to the barbacoa consistency and taste, and he said “The secret of the barbacoa lays partly in the dry and liquid marinade we use, it is achieved by combining 12 to 15 different spices, and then slow roasting it for 7 hours, which creates a fall-of-the-bone, tender, flavorful barbacoa.” Yum! If you come with a group, order the Nacho Platter appetizer, it consists of a pile high mountain of fresh warm tortillas loaded with black beans, jalapeños, black olives, chopped onions and tomatoes, atop a bed of refried beans finished with a generous portion of home-made guacamole in the middle. The nachos, burritos, and all other menu options can be topped with your favorite choice of protein: carnitas, achiote chicken, shrimp or barbacoa beef. They are all perfectly seasoned and cooked to order, in each case pulled into juicy threads. My favorite dish was the shrimp and steak fajitas. From the presentation and execution, to the remarkable taste, this sizzling dish stole my heart from the first bite. The roasted vegetables, the succulent tender steak and the perfectly cooked

shrimp were all previously marinated for hours, resulting in an explosion of flavors bite after bite. The taste of the salsa was mild but savory and unlike anything I ever tasted before. Now I do not want to eat fajitas anywhere else. Had the sizzling cast iron not been… well… sizzling, I would have licked the sauce off of it. It was that good! Chef Mike told me these were the #1 Best Seller, and now I know why! “To me is more than just a hot skillet. It’s about the entire experience. We want each order of fajitas to come out perfectly. No matter if it’s the first order of the day or the 37th, each one needs to look the same, taste the same and evoke the same feelings when brought to the table,” he added. Talk about consistency! Which is definitely a key aspect of every successful restaurant. “At Vuelo we strive for consistency, which is definitely key when cooking the perfect meal, and it helps make any dish a great menu item.” said Chef Michael Lopez. Consistency is the hallmark of a great cook, and that is exactly what he brings to the table, literally… Vuelo definitely has all the ingredients it takes to quickly become to the most successful Mexican Restaurant in town. With vegetarian-friendly options such as the wood-oven blistered shishito peppers, and the cast-iron skillet of roasted cauliflower, smothered with salsa verde, avocado cream sauce, Cotija cheese and a hint of lime, that will make anyone fall in love with cauliflower, there’s something for

everyone to enjoy at Vuelo. “You can go eat anywhere. At Vuelo we like to provide each customer with a unique and one-of-akind dining experience. The kind that will make them keep coming back,” said Chef Mike, and coming back I will. I will definitely be there for their 5 de mayo celebration, which will showcase specials you will not want to miss, including drink and food specials, live music and more! I will bring some of my friends and relatives so they too can enjoy the best Mexican food in the city. Sydney Has a Sister S C H O L A R S H I P FO U N DATION By Carla Dubis

In the first two years of the foundation, the family raised an unbelievable amount of almost $45,000!

Giving recognition to children whose siblings suffer from Autism is the main goal of the Sydney Has a Sister Scholarship Foundation. The cost of a higher education is expensive and can be a burden to many families. Sydney Has a Sister recognizes the sacrifices students have to make for the benefit of their sibling with autism. All proceeds collected are awarded to college bound students who have supported their family and sibling(s) impacted by this condition. Some of the funds are also allocated for other good causes, like purchasing school supplies and holiday gifts for people impacted with autism. The non-profit organization, created by Ernie and Becky Black of Land O’ Lakes, started in 2013 when Becky, a career specialist at Sunlake High in Land O’ Lakes, went looking for scholarship money for her eldest daughter, Sydney. The Blacks have two lovely daughters, Sydney and Regan. Regan is autistic, and the sacrifices her sister Sydney has made and the tribulations she has had to overcome, inspired her parents to form the Sydney Has a Sister scholarship program.

After recruiting many volunteers to assist the several fund raising efforts and activities, the Blacks were able to award six $1,000 scholarships in 2014, fourteen in 2015 and twenty-four in 2016. The funds were also used to buy classroom supplies for students with disabilities at Lake Myrtle Elementary in Land O’ Lakes and at Weightman Middle School and Wesley Chapel High School. But they did not stop there! Some of the funds were also used to acquire holiday gifts for adults with autism. The non-profit organization has had multiple successful events since the very beginning, such as wine tasting events, silent auctions, superhero pubcrawls, yearly golf scramble and scavenger hunts amongst others. This year is started off strong with the huge success of the “Heroes vs. Villains” Soho Pub Crawl. An upcoming event you will not want to miss is the “Casino Night” happening on April 28, 2017 over at the CL Space in Ybor City, located at 1911 N 13th St w100, Tampa, FL 33605. Tickets are $50 per person and it includes $500 in “gambling money”, food, drinks, music, games and more!

For game table sponsorship please email: sydneyhasasister@gmail.com

For more information about all the events and the Sydney Has a Sister Foundation please log on to

www.sydneyhasasister.com

While researching scholarship opportunities, Becky discovered there were no options for kids like her daughter Sydney, a spunky, sweet, caring and extremely smart teen who had long embraced the role of sister, caregiver and best friend to Regan. So almost 5 years ago, in 2013, the Blacks created one.

A Matthew T. Bunch Foundation Celebration friends remembered him with honor showing a level of support his family had not expected or ever experienced. A week later Tampa Fire Rescue held a Celebration of Life for Driver/Engineer Bunch at Water Works Park in Tampa followed by a reception at the Tampa Firefighters Museum. Again, Matthew’s family was overwhelmed by the beautiful ceremony held in his honor, with Mayor Bob Buckhorn and TFR Chief Thomas Forward in attendance, a Tampa Police Department motorcade, and approximately 300 of his Tampa Fire Rescue family as well. The Bunch family decided shortly after that we would give back to Tampa Fire Rescue in an effort to express our gratitude for their many acts of generosity.

The Matthew T. Bunch Foundation is sponsoring a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta and Cook Off at the Tampa Firefighters Museum, located at 720 East Zack St., Tampa, FL 33602, on Friday, May 5, 2017, 6 to 9 p.m. In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is observed in remembrance of the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. In America, Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican American culture. For the Matthew T. Bunch Foundation, Cinco de Mayo has taken on significance for a different and very special reason. Driver/Engineer Bunch was hired by Tampa Fire Rescue in September 2009. In September 2014, he was diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive cancer. His brothers and sisters at Tampa Fire Rescue came together in support of Mathew hosting many events as he sought treatment for a cure. After fighting bravely for eight months, Matthew passed away on May 5, 2015, at the age of 27, on the very day that Tampa Fire Rescue had planned a fundraiser for his benefit at the Bad Monkey in Ybor City. The event took place with an incredible turnout as his Tampa Fire Rescue family and

16 April 2017

In early 2016, Matthew’s family started the Matthew T. Bunch Foundation with the specific mission of supporting Tampa Fire Rescue and their associated organizations and charities. In May 2016, the Matthew T. Bunch Foundation hosted its first event at the Bad Monkey and raised funds for the benefit of Tampa Firefighters Museum, Tampa Firefighters Charity Fund, and Friends of Tampa Fire. In November 2016, the foundation sponsored a Tampa Fire Rescue Women & Wine Evening at the Tampa Firefighters Museum in support of the Women of Tampa Fire Rescue. This year the foundation will sponsor a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta at the Tampa Firefighters Museum and will feature a Cook Off, Mexican Food and Refreshments, Live Entertainment, and Activities for Children. As we celebrate Cinco de Mayo this year, remembering Driver/Engineer Bunch, our hope is that it is a time of “Fun”raising and festivities. Donations will graciously be accepted. Meet award winning race car driver Robin Bonanno, a true inspiration and exemplar woman that will make you feel you can do anything you set your mind to! Robin is currently the proud owner of the UPS Store at 54 at Collier. Bonanno is also a race car Instructor for both SCCA and was a professional instructor for Richard Petty Enterprises, an accomplished Business Owner and Manager, a snow ski instructor, a devoted wife and a breast cancer survivor and warrior amongst many other things. ”Racing is an endurance sport,” Bonanno said. “I have raced with a broken leg. A little more than a year ago, I raced in the middle of radiation for breast cancer.” If you ever have the pleasure of meeting Robin and engaging in conversation with her, you will quickly realize you are talking to the face of determination. There’s nothing stopping her… not even cancer. She is as strong-willed as she is courageous and her energy is both contagious and intoxicating. Bonanno fought back from her diagnoses and now cherishes the relationships she made along the process, including the one she developed with her treating physician and surgeon, Dr. Charles Cox. Dr. Cox is a world renowned research and education Doctor. The Comprehensive Breast Cancer Program at the University of Florida was initiated in 1984 under his direction. In 1986, Doctor Cox moved the program to the Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute at the University of South Florida. He and his colleagues spearheaded the research and training in the technique for Lymphatic Mapping and Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy in breast cancer patients. Along with the pathology

colleagues, they developed the Intra-Operative Touch Preparation Cytology for the evaluation of surgical margins. With these techniques, they have experienced high success rates in breast conservation and lymph node sparing. Since Robin is now cancer-free for over two years her team’s goal for 2017, 2018 is to gain recognition for Robin’s favorite charity “Dr. Cox’s Breast Cancer Research Charity.” This foundation is administered under the vast umbrella of USF’s (University of South Florida) foundation. Bonanno and her husband, Carl Lunderstadt Sr., who is also her crew chief, need YOUR help raising exposure and awareness for Dr. Cox’s Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Racing is one of Robin’s biggest passions, but so is supporting this particular charity, si nce Dr. Cox was the one who treated her and helped her defeat this life-threatening disease. Robin and Carl’s most fervent desire is to acquire a major sponsor to race a new custom-built corvette race car in the 2017 TRANS-AM International series to bring awareness to this Breast Cancer Research Charity. Robin and Carl will donate their race time, energy and efforts to support Dr. Cox’s Breast Cancer Research, and literally race for a cure! The sponsor will benefit by having Robin Bonanno, a remarkable awardwinning celebrity and breast cancer survivor, spotlighting their brand, product or services in their normal advertising and marketing efforts, and in return these efforts will also bring the much needed attention and awareness to Dr. Cox’s charity and its cause.

YOUR SPONSORSHIP COULD HELP SAVE LIVES.

Major advances in research are giving people with breast cancer hope that one day, sooner than later, there will be a cure. Dr. Cox’s research foundation’s main goal is to help find a cure for breast cancer, which is a disease that attacks 1 out of 8 women. Your sponsorship for this team will be incredibly beneficial for creating awareness for this foundation and generating donations for important life- changing research work for women all over the world. By utilizing a female race car driver and the funding of research for finding a cure to the National epidemic of breast cancer, a sponsor that uses Robin in their marketing and advertising should not only get a decent ROI, but should be able to embellish their company name from their marketing efforts. As we all know, for any charity to raise money, they have to make the public aware of what they are doing and become known to the philanthropic community. It takes money to do this and this charity does not spend any money on advertising or promoting of the Charity as USF insists that all the money received by the foundation goes to their research and education. Robin and Carl will work with the Foundation and the sponsor to help establish promotional events that are appropriate for the selected sponsor and their advertising agency as desired. For more information regarding sponsorship please contact Robin’s husband. Carl Lunderstadt at 352-255-9994
