From The Publisher Matt Selby Few words in the English language inspire such a myriad of emotions as Valentine’s Day. The holiday traditionally associated with love, has some in a romantic mood, and some scratching out their eyeballs. It has new lovers bursting with the opportunity to get corny with gestures, and those who might be hurt or bitter wishing the red hearts and cupids would just go away. I mean, I for one, kind of agree that it’s a sensationalized Hallmark holiday. In my opinion, we should be showing our significant other love and appreciating every day of the year. Valentine’s Day isn’t just for serious romance. It’s also a fun holiday for children who enjoy getting and receiving little notes of affection from their classmates, for parents and children to exchange sweets and handmade Valentines, and for friends to remind each other how much they are valued. I always

enjoyed those giddy moments in class as a kid, wondering if my crush would write me a note that she felt the same way as I did. Alas, that moment never really came for me. Let’s just say grade school helped me develop thick skin. Love is something to be celebrated, no matter who is giving it or receiving it. Love is something that we may struggle to define, and can be found in the most surprising places. The 2016 Valentines day was the hardest one I’ve ever endured. Not to get too personal but I had a dagger stabbed deep into my heart just days before last Valentine’s. I never thought I’d love again, then out of know where, I found the love of my life when I wasn’t expecting it. The funny thing is, she was right in front of me for years. We were both with the wrong people and didn’t realize it at the time. The timing just wasn’t right. We are making up for lost time now and

we’re happier than ever. I will make sure to treat her to a memorable Valentine’s day and I hope you enjoy a special day with your loved ones as well. If you’re feeling like I

was last year, take it from me, the right one will come along and all that heartache will be worth it. Happy Valentine’s day New Tampa!

If you went out recently and supported a local business on “small business Saturday,” awesome! I hope you had a great

experience and I sincerely hope you continue to spend money locally as much as possible. So many of the great local businesses here in New Tampa deserve your support year round.

Some people think shopping small ends up costing you more than a chain or big company but that’s not true. So many local business owners actually live in this community and are willing to make deals with their neighbors. Our main focus at Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles is to bring the

community something useful and informative while getting people excited about “buying local and shopping small!” When you shop small business you’re not helping a CEO buy a third vacation home. You are helping a little girl get dance lessons, a little boy get his team jersey, a mom or dad put food

Shop Local Year Round! By Matt Selby

on the table. A “mom and pop” business understands their customers are their shareholders and it’s those customers they strive to make happy. In today’s rough economy, small local businesses are closing their doors on a daily basis, while many big corporate businesses still have the investors and financial backing to pull through. There is nothing wrong with national companies by any means, but by spending our money in locally owned businesses we can help our local economy to flourish instead of decline. When we spend money locally, we contribute to the wellbeing of the entire community. Local businesses build strong vibrant towns, linking neighbors in a web of economic and social relationships. Local ownership

ensures that important decisions are made by people who live within the community and thus, will feel the impact of each decision they make directly. Many local businesses recycle excess revenue by giving back to the community in which they live and work; enriching the area and creating an even better place to live and love. Locally owned and operated businesses also create jobs and sometimes pay even better than the “big guys.” Competition is not a bad thing. A marketplace of many small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and above all, low prices. For example, there are hundreds of restaurants within any given city, some of which operate right next to each other. This is necessary in a thriving economy. Can you imagine if there was only one type of each business in each

town? It would be a monopoly and the price of a monopolized product would be astronomical! Entrepreneurship is what fuels America’s economic innovation and prosperity and serves as a key means for families to move out of a

low paying job and into the middle and upper classes. By spending money locally, we are putting money directly back into the community; therefore supporting your family, your neighbors and your friends.
