I love what I do. I love waking up every morning knowing that our magazines support the local economy and also help spread the word about remarkable nonprofit organizations and local charities that work really hard to make a positive impact in the community as a whole, as well as a huge difference in so many individuals’ lives. You don’t have to be rich to make a difference. Millions of ordinary Americans, people who you pass on the street every day, also give to charities or volunteer, for the sake of making the world a better place. Here at Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles we love giving back to our community. That is why we are happy to showcase and feature any local charity in the Tampa Bay area completely FREE of charge. So if you want to give back to your community you can do so through us! Here’s how: If you or anyone you know would like to feature a local charity, and help them spread their message and reach thousands of homes, please get in touch with me directly by emailing me at matt@nnlflorida. com. Let me know the name of the charity, their website and possible contact number so we can make sure to feature them in upcoming editions of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles. And on the subject of giving back, remember that in my last editorial I mentioned the Rays Giveaway Contest? Well we had an incredible outcome, with hundreds of participants from Instagram and Facebook. Here are the name of our 5 lucky winners: Ona Lela Podell, Vilmaris Conigliaro, Cristina Dunway, Meghin Ruggiero and Cristina Paz. Congratulations again! We are mailing your Rays tickets as we speak. We hope you enjoy the press level tickets, and have a wonderful time with your loved ones. Speaking of our loved ones... June 18th, is Father’s day. I personally want to wish my Father, Tim Selby, a very happy father’s day. My Dad taught me how to play baseball and we really enjoy going to the Rays games. The last game we went to was on April 20th. We watched the Rays crush the Tigers! It was a great day at the ballfield with my family. My Mom, Grandma, my Fiancé Carla and her Father Julio also joined us. Sadly, the very next day, Carla’s father Julio passed away very unexpectedly, from a massive heart attack. It’s left a hole in all our hearts and honestly, we still can’t believe it. Julio was a a Tigers fan because his favorite player, Miguel Cabrera, one of the best players to ever play the game, is from his home country of Venezuela. We made some wonderful memories that day and I’m very happy to know that Julio

had the opportunity to see his favorite player. None of us knew at the time that Julio would be gone by the next day. This is just another example of how important it is to spend time with the people you love. So do me a favor and tell the people you love that you love them every chance you get. Spend as much time with them as you can and build as many beautiful memories as you can. A fun day at Tropicana field with your Dad is a good place for that. Because of Father’s Day and the spirit of giving back, we decided to spice up last month’s Rays contest and dedicate it to baseball loving dads! So you too, can share a fun day at the stadium with your father, like we did. To participate for your chance to win FREE press level seats for a Rays game, with a free parking pass included, please email me your best “Dad and I photos” to matt@nnlflorida.com ***Bonus points to photos with Rays Gear and at the Tropicana Field*** 3 lucky dads will be selected at the end of the month, and each will receive 6 press level tickets to a rays game and two parking passes.

Happy Father’s Day! Good Luck and Go Rays!

From Left To Right: Matt Selby, Charles Selby (R.I.P Grandpa, we love you and miss you dearly, we hope you and Julio are watching the baseball games from Heaven) and Tim Selby.

There is no Club better to start your path to become a great soccer player than in the Ranger Organization. This season was a special one for the FC Tampa Rangers U10 Austen Team out of Tampa, FL. With the finish we had last year we knew competing at our own age level would not be enough competition. So we played up this season to U11. We went 14-0 in the regular season winning our league. We then went all the way to the State Championship in the Commissioners Cup again playing up to U11. While we didn’t win State it was an amazing accomplishment to be able to play up to U11 and have the success we did. All of the boys except one has committed to coming back so this special team will remain intact for next season. Cant wait to see what they are able to do next year. The future is bight for this special team and club.

Judi Beck

Your Key to Tampa Bay Real Estate By Michelle Naktin From hello it is easy to see why Realtor Judi Beck is likeable and easy to talk to, but even more important, she is savvy about marketing homes. With a career that spans over 9 years, there is no name more respected in the Bay area real estate market than that of Judi Beck. With a reputation for honesty and integrity and a dedication it comes as no surprise that Judi is one of the most successful Brokers in Florida. Judi’s work background has given her a wide range of experience in both the buying and selling side of Real Estate. She loves staging homes to show their best potential, and she goes above-and-beyond to reach buyers both locally and globally. Judi Beck’s dedication to her clients has earned her many referrals with Florida Executive Realty’s office located at 15802 Amberly Drive in Tampa, where she specializes in waterfront, luxury, and gated communities. For Judi, becoming a Realtor in Tampa Bay felt like a natural transition. She says that in many ways the career path she took earlier in life helped to prepare her for a career in Real Estate. Judi started her career as a Realtor after she retired from her job as a registered nurse with the VA. It was actually her patients that inspired her to make a change. “I had two patients who were Realtors and they used to tell me the most heartwarming and funny stories.” Seeing that helping people to find their dream homes could be very fulfilling, Judi now channels the nurturing side of her

6 JUNE 2017

personality and the desire to make people comfortable and happy into her efforts to find her clients the perfect home. When you are looking for a home or looking for an agent to sell your home, it is important that you work with someone who really knows the area and Judi Beck definitely knows and loves the Tampa Bay Area. Judi lived in St. Petersburg for 21 years until she got married and traveled around the world. Judi and her husband moved to Germany and after 3 years decided it was time to return to their roots and settle back in the Bay Area. Thinking back on her days as a nurse “I really loved my patients and their families.” and although she is no longer in the field she still has that same desire to make things better for people. “Every day, I am thinking of my clients. Whether they are in the process of closing, listing, or just starting to search for the right home, I am here for them. I am a full time, 24/7 agent with the full support of my family.” Judi’s prior work experience has been beneficial to her career as a Realtor. In the late 60s to early 70s, while living in Detroit, she had the opportunity to work with an interior decorator that had a star-studded clientele list. After working on so many gorgeous properties, Judi gained an appreciation for fine homes early in life. She now uses her design experience to help clients stage their homes when selling. Judi shares, “When I list

a house, I always work with a professional decorator. I also have a list of contractors if a home were to need any repairs.” Judi says that sometimes the small things make all the difference. For instance, professional cleaning of the carpet and upholstery or clean windows and pressure washing can make a home shine. Before Real Estate she worked at the Tampa Bay Times doing advertising layout and design a skill that she continues to use today when her monthly fliers go out to those in her network. She also uses high definition and HD drone photography to highlight not only the homes she has listed, but many of the desirable communities in the area. If you are a seller, you’ll want to know that your Realtor is reaching potential buyers no matter where they are. In this market, most people are turning to the Internet to narrow down their search. With Florida Executive Realty as her Broker, Judi not only has great resources to offer local buyers, but she also can list properties on leading global Real Estate sites such as Luxury Portfolio (Luxury- Portfolio.com) and Leading Real Estate Companies of the World (LeadingRE.com). This enables her to showcase your property to potential buyers across the globe including China through Juwai.com. From her extensive world travels, Judi has personal networking contacts in London and France if these destinations are places that interest you.

Some Sellers need a little help and some have a knack for spacial aspects of the room and color schemes. Staging and the photographer makes a difference in any home photography for advertising. Judi uses HD Showings exclusively for her listings. Judi is dedicated to making your Real Estate transaction a smooth and successful one. “The most difficult part for any seller or buyer is to feel confident and trust the agent you’re working with. On any appointment I tell all parties the truth. I have comparable properties ready to show and all aspects of the homes researched.” Judi is ready to answer any of your questions and knows the home inside and out before she arrives. Choosing the right Realtor makes a difference in the speed, accuracy and ease of your transition. “As a Realtor my goal is to consistently provide my clients with the highest level of representation.” Judi’s enthusiasm, her unwavering commitment to exceeding expectations, and her determination to be the best advocate for her clients makes her an excellent choice when you are ready to choose a Realtor. Judi knows and loves Tampa Bay. She has worked with clients all over the area with a special focus on New Tampa and the beach communities of Pinellas and Pasco County. Extraordinary neighborhoods, tourist attractions, and world class beaches are just a few of the reasons the Bay Area would steal your heart. If relocating is something that has crossed your mind, call Judi Beck. She is ready to show you the beauty of the place she calls home. Judi Beck can be reached by phone at 813-380-3866 or by email at JudiBeckSellsTampaBay@gmail.com.

New Tampa resident, Gene Long, proudly retires from Florida Hospital after 50 years of service to Tampa Bay By Matt Selby 50 years! It’s still hard for me to fathom that

number. Most people are lucky if they keep the same profession for 50 months. Congratulations are in order for long time New Tampa resident and my Uncle Gene long. He started his journey into the medical field all those years ago after he met a man by the name of Fred Basset at a High School Career day. Over 50 years later Gene finally retired as the Supervisor of the Interventional Radiology Lab at Florida Hospital. I’m not going to even pretend to know exactly all that entails but I do know the interventional Lab has diagnostic machines that deal with kidneys and livers and if they are draining properly.

From Left to Right: Caitlin, Gene, Tammy and Ryan

I asked Gene what kept him around so long. He could have retired years ago but patient contact is “Patient contact, well honestly, I don’t see them as patients. They are people, very interesting people. what kept him happy to come to work each day.

I always ask everyone the same 2 questions which are, What did you do for a living and where are you from originally? I once had a 103 year old woman tell me she came to Florida on a covered wagon!” Gene also went on to tell me about how he met former professional athletes and coaches as well as a number of other famous people. Gene even met his Wife of almost 13 years, Tammy at work. At his retirement party (which Tammy planned and it was incredible) my Uncle Gene thanked too many people to count and at least a half dozen people stood up to sing his praises and talk a little about him. Kathleen, his “work wife” as he calls her, of almost 39 years was one of many who had nothing but great things to say about him. People were even getting emotional as they talked about what a great man he is beyond how great he was at his job. He’s actually my Dad’s uncle which makes him my great Uncle and it was clear to me after that night how truly great Gene Long is. Congratulations again Uncle Gene! Enjoy your retirement! You earned it!

Don’t let Spot Get too Hot!

How to keep your four legged friend cool this summer.

By Billy Alice Florida is known for many things, not least of which is the HEAT! While most of the country assumes it’s always Summer here, us Floridians know the hot honest truth. Summer can get brutal and for our fur wearing friends it can be even more unbearable. So if you have a canine companion here are a few tips to keep them cool and how to spot if they’ve gotten too hot! First things first, always make sure to have a lot of fresh water available for your dog (year round) but especially in the summer months. This will keep them hydrated and help cool them from the inside out. One of the best ways to avoid overheating, is to plan outdoor activity in the early mornings and later evenings when the temperature is lower. When going on walks keep your pup on grass or light concrete as much as possible. On a 95° day the concrete can reach a temperature of 120° at peak sun hours and the grass can still reach 105°. If the ground is too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your pup! In the hot months try going on shorter walks more frequently instead of long walks that can lead to exhaustion or overheating. It’s also never a good idea to let your pup sit in a parked car even if the windows are cracked or open. Cars can quickly exceed the ambient temperature of the air even in shade, so if they can’t come inside where you are going, leave them at home in the air conditioning.

To help expel some of your dog’s energy but still stay cool, consider playing in the hose or sprinkler with your pet. It is a great way to keep you both refreshed and have some fun! If you have access to a pool or body of water taking your dog for a swim will help them get in activity but stay cool in the process. When using water to cool your pup you should avoid using any water that is ice cold however, as that can constrict blood vessels and make it harder for your dog to release excess heat. Wetting their ears with water or rubbing alcohol will actively help them cool off if you notice any signs of heat exhaustion. Be sure to keep a close eye on them and familiarize yourself with the symptoms of heat exhaustion in dogs, especially when doing outdoor activities. Signs include, excessive panting, rapid heartbeat, disorientation, collapse, brick red gums or tongue, vomiting and respiratory distress. If you notice any of these contact your vet immediately and start actively cooling them down. A normal temperature for a dog is between 98° and 102°, a dog’s temperature should never go above 103°. The best way to keep your dog safe and happy is just to be aware of them and their surroundings. Summer doesn’t have to mean indoors only for your best friend if you keep these tricks in mind.

Different frozen treats are a fantastic way to help your pup beat the heat, my St. Bernard loves plain ice and now comes running at the sound of our ice machine. Also freezing different stuffable toys with vet approved fillers can work wonders for a hot dog. Both my dogs love frozen watermelon or apples, and blended banana and peanut butter is always a crowd pleaser! Just be sure to check with your vet before changing your dog’s diet.

Garage Guru What’s going on with my car?

Brought to you by Christian Brothers Automotive, New Tampa and Wesley Chapel

Do you remember the Hunters Green resident that had a “pesky Check Engine Light” come on and she was struggling with whether or not to ignore it, save the repair money, and live with the fear she might be left stranded. I encouraged her to have her trusted garage read the fault codes for free and if a serious problem is indicated pay for diagnostic testing to determine a correct repair. This is a good investment in the long run.

But what’s the difference between reading fault codes and diagnostic testing? Let’s see if I can sort this out. Diagnostic Testing is the process to sort out the possible problems until the actual problem is identified. Last edition we talked about how your nose is a sensor that picks up smell for your brain to interpret. When it’s odd, your brain wants you to figure it out. You can say, “Oh that’s nothing and ignore it.” You might say, “The kids left toast in the toaster. Just throw it out.” But, then the wife says, “It’s not nothing and it’s not the piece of toast sticking out of the toaster. This is bad and I can’t believe you can’t smell it. We’re going to sniff around the house until we find it.” And you say, “But the game’s coming on and I’m not missing kick-off.” Then you miss kick off, of course, and you’re wandering around sniffing the air when you hear cheers from a touchdown in the first 30 seconds and you don’t know which team. Finally you and your wife converge on the kitchen sink to find a half tuna sandwich stuffed in the garbage disposal that was never run. That’s what diagnostic testing does for you. To bring it back to reality, an engine misfire code can result from dozens of causes. You can start replacing expensive coil packs and spark plugs. Or you can test options to diagnose the real cause.

And, there is one more reason to do diagnostic testing.

Last edition I left you with a question - “If I pay for the diagnostic testing to find out what my Check Engine Light is trying to tell me, and then authorize the repair the garage recommends but it doesn’t fix my problem, am I still expected to pay for the work?”

16 JUNE 2017

If you paid for diagnostic testing and you authorized the recommended repair, but the problem isn’t fixed, it’s not fair to expect you to pay. By paying for diagnostic testing the burden has shifted to the Technician and the Garage to perform a correct repair. Your diagnostic fee paid to remove the guesswork and to fix the problem that was validated by the Technician. Now, in fairness, in most situations you should not be expected to pay for additional diagnostic testing. But if additional parts are needed it may be fair to expect you to pay for those. new trees. Frankly, for the price we paid, I was surprised at the size of the crew and the amount of equipment they brought, but the made short work of the entire project. Plus, they had to remove some curbing and plants to access the tree. When they were done, they replaced everything and you cannot tell they even disturbed those items. This is our third time using this company and we will definitely use them again. Another happy customer, Charles, has this to say, “Things could not have gone better. Pete made an excellent recommendation for replacing a large tree that was giving us problems (which he pointed out would only get worse) with something entirely different that will be much more attractive and much easier to maintain. His crew arrived on time and they were very professional throughout. They even took extra time to show me a few tricks for maintaining the

Straight Teeth with Invisalign Clear Aligners By Matt Selby Sam Jureyda, D.M.D. of Radiance Orthodontics wants you to “Let Your Smile Shine!” Which may be a difficult thing for you to do if your teeth are not as straight or as white as you would like. Luckily for you, Dr. Sam specializes in providing his clients with a number of different options to achieve a healthy smile full of straight shinning teeth! In our August edition you’ll read a much more in-depth article about Radiance Orthodontics and what they can offer you and your family. But for now I wanted to share with you a little information about clear braces. Dr. Sam of Radiance Orthodontics is the official Orthodontic partner of this New Tampa publication for a good reason. He gets amazing results for his patients, plain and simple! He achieves these results by being thorough, creative and staying on the cutting edge of technology in his field. I’m personally a big fan of Invisalign, in fact, I am an invisalign success story myself. I had traditional braces as a kid and after about 15 years of never wearing my retainers, my teeth shifted dramatically. Within 12 months of invisalign my smile was better than ever and I wanted to share this information with all of my readers. Clear aligners, such as Invisalign, are not necessarily anything brand new. They have been around since the early 2000’s, but started becoming popular and ganing more attention in recent years. I really enjoyed the process. It was fun for me to watch my teeth shift, and get straighter and straighter each passing month. I had a great experience with Invisalign and I highly recommend it. If you’re an adult with a professional career that involves being in front of people all day like me or if you simply do not want to have a mouth full of metal that will embarrass you and make you hide your smile for as long as the treatment lasts, then invisalign is the way to go!

HOW DOES IT WORK? You wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move — little by little, week by week — until they have straightened to their final positions. You'll visit us about once every six weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages nine to 15 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both will vary from case to case. If you’re an adult who wants straight teeth without the look of traditional braces bringing you back to your High School years, then Invisalign is for you! Teens who also want straighter teeth and the confidence that comes along with it, may also be a good candidate as well. Obviously, there are some responsibilities involved with a braces system that can be taken out when ever somebody wants so my suggestion would be to let your teen know how important it is for them to wear them at least 22 hours a day and if they can’t commit to that, Dr. Sam will offer them a more traditional path to a beautiful smile. Contact Radiance Orthodontics today by calling 813-972-1100. Visit them online at www.MyRadianceBraces.com or pop into their office at 17427 Bridge Hill CT. Suite A, Tampa Fl, 33647

CERTIFIED INVISALIGN PROVIDER Consider Invisalign treatment to get the beautiful straight teeth you've always wanted — without braces. A complimentary consultation with Doctor Jureyda can determine if Invisalign clear aligners are right for you.

WHAT IS IT? Invisalign treatment uses a series of virtually invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners that allow you to smile more during treatment as well as after. Invisalign clear aligners are made with 3D computer imaging technology and has been proven effective. More than 70% of orthodontists in the US and Canada are certified to administer Invisalign treatment.

WHY WOULD I WANT IT? Not only are the aligners virtually invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Plus, brushing and flossing are no problem. They are also more comfortable than traditional braces, with no metal or wires, which also usually means you spend less time in your doctor's office getting adjustments. Invisalign treatment also allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan when you start so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete.
