What do Rent, The Book of Mormon, Les Miz, The Producers, Wicked and The Sound of Music have in common? Each won the Tony Award for Best Musical – and all were written and scored by Jewish composers or

lyricists. Great names we remember from the past, like Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, George and Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II, Kurt Weill, Jerry Bock, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim – as well as contemporary artists like Steven Schwartz and Jonathan Larson – have been instrumental in Broadway’s growth and history. Congregation Kol Ami in Tampa will celebrate such Jewish contributions to the American Musical Theater with “A Jewish Night on Broadway” on Saturday evening, November 19, 2016. Jewish artists have played a pivotal role in the creation of musicals and development of Broadway. It is hard to imagine Broadway without their achievements. Even Monty Python’s Eric Idle acknowledged in his own award-winning musical Spamalot, “You won’t succeed on Broadway if you don’t have any Jews.” The gala will showcase live performances from some of the greatest Tony-nominated and award winning Broadway musicals. home during the holiday seasons. People come from across the country and even from other countries to see the spectacular Oakdale Light Display. It was ranked in the top three light displays by NBC’s Today Show, was presented first in HGTV’s All Out Christmas Special, and has been featured in People Magazine. Started by a St. Petersburg family in 1977, the Oakdale Light Display began as a modest light display, but quickly grew to one of the largest in the area. By 1989, the display grew from 6,200 lights to 60,000 lights! Today, the display features over a half million lights (including fiber optics) and countless holiday-themed decorations. It takes approximately three months to install the display and requires about 12 truckloads to bring in the items from storage. Original owner Ted Kresge is now 76 years old and still sets up the display himself, along with family and a small crew of 8 to 15 people. The display is about a half-acre

in size and features a 70-foot lit Christmas tree. The roof of the home features four giant Christmas trees made entirely of lights. There are over 700 animated objects, including dolls, bears, many Santas and toys! Many of the lights are digitally connected to play along with music, so you’ll get quite the show during your visit! The manger scene has over 150 pieces to browse over. Kids and adults alike love to play with the double-bubble machines that send out huge bubbles all evening long. From walkways lined with fun toys, to water features, and a huge collection of animated dolls, this place is all about the holiday spirit! There is a snowman that reaches three stories high and a large HOscale model railroad that runs 18 trains at one time! The layout includes city and country scenes with an airport, flying planes and a working carnival. Teresa Smith says, “A Christmas tradition for locals. My kids, 7 and 8, really enjoyed the light display. A

perfect way to spend our Wednesday night as we gear up for Christmas.” Another visitor says, “Amazing! A must see for the family. Thank you for putting on such an awesome display!” I lived in the St. Pete area for six years and there was never a holiday season that I didn’t visit the famous Oakdale Light Display. Each year there was something new and exciting to look forward to. I loved grabbing a hot cocoa and walking to the light display with visiting family and friends to check out all the fun animated scenes. Get in the holiday spirit, visit with Santa, and enjoy the twinkling lights as you walk through the gorgeous Oakdale Light Display. The atmosphere is celebratory and festive and there is endless fun to discover. If you have family in town to entertain, or just are looking for a festive, holiday activity to entertain the kids, the Oakdale Light Display is the perfect place to visit!

Located at 2719 Oakdale Street South, St. Petersburg, FL the Light Display is easy to find: Take I-275. Exit on #22 (I-175) going E to 4th Street South. Turn right on 4th Street S, and go approximately 1 mile, crossing 22nd Ave South. Take the next left, which is Oakdale. Go two blocks, park and begin your tour. Carrollwood Players Celebrates 35 Years in the Community By Deborah Bostock-Kelley If you haven’t been to Carrollwood Players Theatre for a while or maybe you never heard of this theatre gem tucked into a nondescript shopping complex, it’s time for a visit. Celebrating its 35th year as Tampa’s oldest continually-running nonprofit community theatre, with a gift of fresh paint, a new stage, and lobby makeover, the theatre has become a vibrant showcase of masterful dramas, comedies, and musicals on its Mainstage. The season includes Deathtrap, Proof, an original take on A Christmas Carol, Lie, Cheat and Genuflect, The Red Velvet Cake Wars, All My Sons, Incorruptible, An Act of the Imagination, and A Little Murder Never Hurt Anyone. Mainstage also features its highly regarded One Act Weekend. Whether you are hoping for kneeslapping comedy, a little funny-bone

tickling, a romantic interlude, or to have your heart ripped out and stomped on repeatedly, “described as

channel surfing live people,” by a patron, One Act Weekend has yet to disappoint.

The season recently opened with the sold-out production of The Addams Family Musical, voted by

Tell Your Friends—Belle Barth is Back and the gripping drama, Agnes of God. Both Mainstage and Black Box always seek volunteers to work front of house selling concessions, checking patrons in, handing out playbills, or selling raffle tickets. In return, you see the show for free. If you’ve never heard of this little theatre with big talent and even bigger heart or you haven’t stopped by in a few months or even a few years, this season is the perfect opportunity to add affordable live

patrons in 2015 to be the musical of choice for 2016-2017. However, La Cage aux Folles was such a close contender, the theatre chose to do two of the three musicals vying for patron vote. With the success of the inaugural “Adopt a Musical,” patrons will be able to vote for their favorites for the 2017-2018 season later this year. Brought to life in April 2015, inside the lobby of the Mainstage theatre is CWP Black Box. Black Box is the vision of dozens of volunteers, helmed by patron and past board member Jim Russell. Before, a wasted space for storage, fast forward a little over two years and the intimate 50-seat Black Box is a celebrated theatre within the theatre for staged readings, original musicals, one acts, contemporary

performances, musical revues, festivals, concerts, and more. Black Box staged readings are not a line of actors sitting in a row of chairs reading the script. They are high energy, almost fully staged productions with a set, costumes, props, lights and sound effects, and the actors move around the set carrying their scripts. The 2016-2017 season includes America Buffalo, Love Letters, Almost, Maine, The Vagina Monologues, Hand to God, The Divine Sister, KIDSPEAK Youth Theatre, Burn This, A Thousand Clowns, and A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking. Black Box will also feature two fully staged productions - the Tampa premiere of the New York bound musical comedy If I Embarrass You,

TOP PROSPECTS IN THE TAMPA BAY RAYS SYSTEM For avid baseball fans, watching the youngest and newest talent in the sport is invigorating. Fresh faces, new outlooks to an American pastime that that has been passed down for generations and for some teams a new hope that this will be “the year”. The Tampa Bay Rays have grown many young prospects throughout the years and although some of them are no longer with the team, their presence can still be felt in their fan base. After a disappointing 2016 season, the Rays now look to 2017 and the promise of the future. Highly touted pitcher Blake Snell made his Major League debut just a few months ago and next year at this time, fans may just be talking about one of the names below. Topping the Rays’ prospect list is shortstop Willy Adames. The 21 year old spent the 2016 season with the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits, hitting .274 with 11 homers and 57 RBIs. Although the Biscuits’ playoff run was cut short, Adames showed a lot of potential for the future with a solid season both offensively and defensively. Adames was named both a Southern League Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star rosters. The shortstop was originally signed with the Detroit Tigers in March 2014 while playing in his native Dominican Republic. At the 2014 trade deadline, Adames was sent to the Tampa Bay Rays as part of a three team trade that sent him and Drew Smyly to Tampa Bay, David Price to the Tigers and Austin Jackson to the Seattle Mariners. Adames’ 2016 campaign was definitely an improvement over the 2015 season while playing with the Class-A

Advanced Charlotte StoneCrabs and recording just a .258 batting average with four homeruns. Next on the list is right-handed pitcher Brent Honeywell. At 21 years old, Honeywell completed his third season of pro ball in the Rays’ organization. Honeywell was drafted in the 2014 MLB Draft with a compensational pick while playing at Walters State Community College. He started 2014 with the Charlotte Stone Crabs where he was 4-1 in 10 starts with a 2.41 ERA/0.96 WHIP, while striking out an impressive 64 batters in 56 innings. Following his July promotion to Double-A Montgomery, Honeywell continued with the work he had started in Charlotte with a 3-2 record in 10 starts and a slightly lower ERA at 2.28; in all he had 117 strikeouts in 115.1 innings pitched in 2016. This fall Brent Honeywell was selected to represent the Rays’ organization in the Arizona Fall League as part of the Peoria Javelinas. Another member of the Montgomery Biscuits’ squad, Jake Bauers comes in at number three in the Rays’ top five. Known mostly for his work at first base, he spent the 2016 season in the outfield making him an even more versatile prospect. The 20 year old continues to build on his power at the plate hitting a solid .274 in 2016 with 14 homers, 28 doubles and 78 RBIs. Bauers was named both a 2016 Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star in the Southern League and earned “Player of the Week” honors in the beginning of July. He also spent last off-season with the Arizona Fall League where he was named to the AFL Rising Stars’ Team.

Originally drafted by the San Diego Padres in the seventh round of the 2013 MLB Draft, Bauers was traded alongside Rene Rivera and Burch Smith to the Rays in exchange for Wil Myers and three other players in December 2014. The Rays most recent first-round pick Joshua Lowe, makes his debut on the prospect list at number four. At just 18 years old, Lowe was the Rays first round draft pick in 2016. After signing with the club this past June, he reported to the Gulf Coast Rays of the rookie league and was then promoted to the Princeton Rays at the beginning of the July. In 28 games with the GCL Rays, he hit .258 with two homers and 15 RBIs and then upon his promotion, hit .238 with three homers and 11 RBIs. Right-hander Jacob Faria rounds out the top five list and his

performance this season shows that although his record (5-10) wasn’t exactly what some may have hoped, it was his command and strike zone dominance that shows his potential. The 23 year old spent the entire 2016 season with the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits and then with the Triple-A Durham Bulls since late June. The righty struck out an impressive 157 strikeouts in 27 starts for a total of 151 innings pitched. Faria was drafted in the 10th round of the 2011 MLB Draft while playing at Gahr High School. With the off-season now upon us fans can look forward to tracking their favorite minor leaguers in various fall and winter leagues and into Spring Training 2017. Of course, free agency is still awaiting and there maybe even more twists and turns ahead for the Rays.

Barkdoll Massage Therapy Brings Therapeutic Massage Services to You at Home Massage is a universal language that has been “spoken” for centuries in every region of the globe, and it has many benefits including the ability to reduce anxiety, relieve pain, reduce blood pressure, and aid in relaxation. For many people, massage is a rare treat that they look forward to at the spa or as an experience during their vacation. Others use massage on a regular basis to help with chronic pain, reduce inflammation or to help heal after an injury. Whatever your reason for wanting a massage, Barkdoll Massage Therapy makes it easy, affordable and best of all, Barkdoll comes to you. Barkdoll Massage Therapy, an entirely mobile-based massage business based in the Trinity area, is owned and operated by Licensed Massage Therapist Karla Barkdoll, who has been a professional in the massage industry since 2001. Serving

the Tampa Bay area, Barkdoll Massage Therapy is completely different in that it takes all of the stress out of your massage experience by bringing it straight to you. No traffic, no stress, just pure relaxation where you feel the most comfortable! Originally from a small town in central Pennsylvania, Karla moved to Baltimore where she trained at the Baltimore School of Massage. Licensed in Maryland, DC, Virginia and Florida, she is a member of the American Massage Therapy Association, and is Nationally Board Certified. Karla’s massages can be done anywhere – at home, poolside, or at the office. Most of her clients choose the room in their house that offers the least distractions, and there she creates a wonderful environment for massage. She also takes the time to really speak to her clients before their massage to learn more about them and any physical discomfort or problems they

Massage Services that Improve Your Life “Your Health is your Wealth” is the philosophy at Barkdoll Massage Therapy, and that is why Karla takes the time to really find out what kind of massage you prefer, whether it’s a Swedish massage or a deep tissue treatment for chronic pain, Karla’s massage will make a difference in your life. Karla offers a wide range of affordable massage therapy styles and packages. If you are looking for a traditional massage, Swedish massage treatments are designed to improve

circulation, reduce stress and to relieve muscle tension. Hot stone massages also are popular. Warm stone therapy, which is the art of using heated stones in combination with a Swedish massage, is a great method of massage used to dissolve muscle tension and induce deep relaxation. Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic treatment designed to ease the pain and discomfort associated with

have, so that she can create a therapeutic massage that will be most beneficial to each individual. chronic pain. Karla says, “During deep tissue massages I use trigger points to specifically find the places where the work needs to be done.” Deep tissue massages can help people who live with painful conditions live a fuller life. Another style of massage that Karla offers is sports massage and injury rehabilitation. This style of massage combines the benefits and style of a deep tissue massage with stretching, which can improve the range of motion in joints. Whether you are healing after a car accident or are

suffering from chronic pain associated with a medical condition, this kind of massage can be extremely beneficial. One of Karla’s clients from Trinity said, “I have had the pleasure of having Karla as a massage therapist for the past six years and it has always been an enriching and healing experience. She is knowledgeable, professional and a kindhearted person and I have no hesitation in recommending her service. She has hands of gold!” Prenatal massages are a fantastic way to pamper the mom-to-be while

easing some of the side effects of pregnancy. Specially designed massage table pillows create a comfortable position just for a woman during this time, so that pregnant moms can safely enjoy their massage. Aromatherapy is proven to aid in relaxation, and Barkdoll Massage Therapy offers a variety of essential oils and scents that can be used in collaboration with any other style of massage. Most often used with a Swedish massage, aromatherapy oils are applied by Karla during your massage to enhance the massage experience. One local couple wrote, “We all have very busy schedules and it saves us time and stress to have Karla come right to our home. My husband has chronic pain and her weekly massages help him tremendously. Whether you just want a great stress reliever or you have a medical condition I would highly recommend Karla!” If you are looking for a fantastic way to improve morale at work, how about offering your employees a corporate seated massage? This is a fully clothed, seated massage that can be done right at the office. This style of massage focuses on the back, neck, shoulders, scalp, arms and hands. What a great way to let your employees know how much you care about them! My Massage with Karla Scheduling my massage turned out to be a breeze because Barkdoll Massage Therapy is one of the only places that offers evening massage appointments. It was all very easy for me since I wasn’t going to have to worry about driving anywhere or a babysitter for the kids! I simply picked out a quiet room in the house, sent the kids outside to play with my hubby,

and got ready to enjoy my massage. Karla, a true professional, arrives right on time bringing everything she needs with her. She takes the time to ask about any injuries you may have suffered in the past, and current complaints that she needs to be aware of. Karla and I decided that a combination Swedish and deep tissue massage would be most beneficial for me. Karla put on what I like to call “massage music,” and spoke to me about what she was going to do before she began. To my surprise, I was even more relaxed because I was at home. I enjoyed the entire hour instead of wondering how many minutes had passed, or wondering about the kids. I felt safe, pampered and well cared for. After my massage, I felt like a softened stick of butter, and I was able to just put on my slippers instead of my shoes! Massage can make one feel more centered, and can even change one’s outlook. Following my massage with Karla, I felt great for days and my entire family could see what a difference it made for me both physically and emotionally. The best thing about Barkdoll Massage Therapy is how affordable it is, making it possible to benefit from theapeutic massage on a regular basis. Barkdoll Massage Therapy is an entirely mobile massage therapy business that comes to you. Karla Barkdoll (License # MA47546) is available 7 days a week, from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. To schedule an appointment or to request more information about massage packages, corporate events or gift certificates, call (727) 372- 6389 or email Karla Barkdoll at barkdollmassagetherapy@yahoo.com
