Happy Valentine’s Day From The Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles Family! I cannot believe February is already here! First of all, I hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine’s day! Every February 14, across the United States and in other places around the world, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint, and where did these traditions come from? The history of Valentine’s Day–and the story of its patron saint–is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl–possibly his jailor’s daughter– who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and–most importantly–romantic figure. By the middle of the 18th, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 1900 printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their

emotions in a time when direct expression of one’s feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine’s Day greetings. Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began selling the first mass-produced valentines in America. Howland, known as the “Mother of the Valentine,” made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as “scrap.” Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines. Did you send and / or receive any Valentine’s day gifts this month? It is not too late to send that special someone or even a friend or family member, a little token of affection. Who does not love receiving gifts? Last but not least, this month’s edition is jam-packed with many incredible community stories and family friendly events that you will not want to miss! If you have a hard time concentrating at home and cannot get much work done at a loud and busy local coffee shop, then consider co-working! Make sure to read SOAR Co-Working’s feature story. Paula Blair is currently offering a $99 special you will not want to pass on. I also want to personally thank Production Manager, Ryan Penna, from Tampa Bay Plumbers for coming to my rescue when my garbage disposal broke down. Make sure you read the Tampa Bay Plumbers story and contact them for any of your plumbing needs, they are definitely the best in town! I hope you enjoy this issue of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles, and as always, thank you for your support!

What if I told you the “good guys” from the “good ol’ days” still exist? We’re talking about the blue collar guys that treat you and your family as they would treat their own. At times, it seems like a thing of the past. If you spend five minutes online you’ll find negative reviews on many plumbing companies in the area. In today’s economy it’s tougher than ever to find honest, hard, fair work but we’ve found it. We found a company who will work hard for you and your family to fix any and all of your plumbing and/or septic problems. Most importantly, they’re a reputable and licensed company. I’m talking about Tampa Bay Plumbers! Owner Ryan Pelky demands excellence from everyone on his team. “I take personal responsibility for every job no matter how big or small,” says Pelky. “This company obsesses over quality and our customer experience. I can promise you this…if you’re not happy with something we did for you, I will make it right. Go ahead and look them up next time you’re online and you’ll find glowing reviews from tons of satisfied local customers. You’ll find an Angie’s List Super Service Award, an almost 5 star review on Facebook (you can’t please everyone), an A+ rating on the Better Business Bureau, and an almost 5-star rating on just about every review site on the net including google which they boast a 4.8 out of 5 rating! That’s no easy task especially when you have competitors constantly hiring other people to fake bad reviews online. It’s a sad world we live in but it’s a reality that

not enough people know about. I guess what I’m saying is, even if you don’t take my word for it, you can trust the reviews of countless more people. I put my trust for all my personal and business plumbing and septic needs in the hands of Tampa Bay Plumbers; in fact, one of my best friends in the world, Ryan Penna, plays a paramount role within the company as their production manager. I trust Ryan and after hearing him talk so highly about the company he works for I knew I wouldn’t regret hiring them. Tampa Bay Plumbers will be working on a model home I’m building personally here in Tampa very soon. As Mr. Pelky says himself, there’s no job too big or too small. Sometimes the small stuff is the most inconvenient – leaky toilets, clogged drains (because your kids are brilliant and decided their toys wanted to go swimming in things they shouldn’t), garbage disposal repair, superficial leaks and bursts all the way through septic repair and maintenance, and trenchless repairs. Ryan Penna and I sat down and I asked Ryan Pelky what he thinks sets Tampa Bay Plumbers apart from others in the industry. He said, “First off, we have over 25 years of experience locally here in Tampa dating back to before we were Tampa Bay Plumbers. Much of our crew has been a constant over the past decade and our guys have the experience that others simply don’t have. Many others don’t even operate with the proper licensing. We do plenty of residential but also have very large commercial

jobs that other, smaller companies would never tackle or be trusted with so we have the man power to get the job done. We have the most technologically advanced plumbing tools and equipment available. We treat every plumbing project like an emergency and never sacrifice quality. Our 24/7 availability definitely is a huge selling point for us and we never charge an overage rate for Saturday or Sunday work like many others in our industry under normal circumstances. We are true work-o-holics from our owners all the way down to our entry level positions.” Let’s talk about backing up what you sell. Tampa Bay Plumbers offers a minimum 1 year warranty on all work and even has a 10 year warranty for some jobs! They also offer a FREE CONSULTATION and water quality test to check for hard water, odor or other potentially dangerous toxins so regardless of

your plumbing or septic needs at the moment make sure you take them up on that. “Our prices match or in most cases are lower than any other reputable company in the area and we serve the entire Tampa Bay Area. We don’t lose a customer over price very often and if we do it’s because the customer goes with an unlicensed contractor,” says Ryan. If Tampa Bay Plumbers can help you, please give them a call at 813-Plumber. That is 813-758-6237. Tell them Matt Selby from Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles sent you and receive $50 off your project, repair or maintenance. Customers, such as myself, love these guys for a reason so rest assured you will be in great hands with Tampa Bay Plumbers!

Yeager & Company Introduces American Made Cabinetry By Melanie Carter Designs!

Executive Vice President Melanie Carter brings her own strengths to the company and the customers love working with her. Jim says, “Melanie is excellent at helping customers with design when they are remodeling and shows them the possibilities for opening up their space. She comes up with total facelifts for the homes of our customers.” Recently, Melanie developed and designed her own cabinet line Melanie Carter Designs. Her cabinet line offers 100% American Made cabinets that are built with quality

products, offer on-trend styles and give customers a chance to hand select their cabinets from a line that won’t break the bank or sacrifice quality. Melanie’s new cabinet line, exclusively offered by Yeager and Company, offers three levels of quality handcrafted cabinets Bronze, Silver and Gold. Melanie says, “My line offers six doors styles and six popular color selections. I chose to minimize the number of options that make prices higher in order to help people make an easier decision that doesn’t lack on quality, but also won’t break their budget.” Although, Melanie’s line offers a limited selection of options - it does not limit style or design. From white shaker cabinets (her number one seller) to grey stains and paints, espresso colors, neutral browns and more - Melanie Carter Designs cabinetry offers customers a choice of stylish finishes that bring out the warmth and brightness of any kitchen or bathroom. Yeager & Company recently remodeled a local couple’s kitchen and dining area to fit their family’s needs and chose to go with Melanie Carter Designs cabinet line. Michelle says, “The Yeager & Company team definitely met our expectations. After updating our floors with gorgeous wood-style tile a few years back, we decided to hire

Yeager & Company again to take care of our kitchen remodel. Yeager & Company took out our dining room area to enlarge our small galley style kitchen. They were able to seamlessly combine our galley kitchen and dining room to make a more user and family friendly area. From removing walls, to lifting the ceiling and updating floors and cabinets - they offered a solution that worked for our home that we love. Melanie’s cabinet line offered a more cost effective solution that took out the guess work for styles. We really loved that the cabinets were made and shipped locally from Tampa because it gave us peace of mind that they would not have to travel too far with a chance of being dinged. Yeager & Co. made our home a place of beauty and functionality. Houses are meant to be lived in - her line gave us quality cabinets that are stylish and will withstand the test of time for our family.” Yeager and Company is sought out by discerning homeowners in some of the most prestigious neighborhoods in Florida for their expertise in designing elegant bathrooms and superbly functional yet beautiful kitchens. SOAR Co-Working - Work in a Professional Environment With A Cafe Feel! - By Carla Selby SOAR Co-Working is a creative community of independent workers, virtual employees, road warriors and pajama workers, working together to achieve maximum productivity in a professional environment with a cafe feel. Founded in 2017, SOAR Co-Working is conveniently located in New Tampa at 17491 Commerce Park Blvd., Suite 103. Co-working is spreading fast across Tampa Bay! With so many people freelancing, a rising number of entrepreneurs choosing to work for themselves, and with big corporate companies offering more work-from-home positions, there’s a big need for a workplace beyond Starbucks or the living room couch. “I’m a project manager at heart and on paper, and have spent many hours working with teams and alone. SOAR was born from brainstorming with smart, humble and hungry friends. I found out what they’ve experienced, what they enjoyed the most, what services they needed, and how they produced their most amazing work,” said Paula Blair, owner and founder of SOAR Co-working. “We exist to help boost the performance of the

16 FEBRUARY 2018

independent worker and entrepreneur by providing the perfect space to focus, create and collaborate. SOAR is all about setting the stage for you to produce amazing work.” Local cafes and coffee shops are constantly full of people who could work from home but prefer not to. They are frustrated with the slow and insecure wi-fi and only having access to a limited number of power outlets, and they sometimes find it hard to be productive in such a busy and distracting environment. I do not know about you, but

I believe coffee shops can be very distracting places to work or study, as they can get crowded and loud very fast. And working from home can be equally as challenging. As a freelance and independent worker myself, I find it extremely hard to focus or get a lot of things done when I choose to work from home. I usually wake up later than I should, go straight to the couch, open my laptop and start working… in my pajamas. But soon enough the multiple home distractions start to hit me; I need to do laundry, I should clean the kitchen and wow I should really rearrange my closet! And let’s not get into having 24/7 access to your fridge… I have gained quite a few pounds since I started working at home in my comfy sweats. Working from home can also be quite hard if you have a little one, or two, or three (you get the point.) Have you tried studying or working on an important project with a couple of kids in the house? I have! And let me tell you, it is nearly impossible to focus and get anything done unless someone else is there to watch over them, and still, can affect your concentration. SOAR offers a solution to the problem of lack of concentration and possible isolation that many people experience while working at home, while at the same time letting them escape the many distractions that keep you from being truly productive at home. “We solve these issues by providing a professional and inspiring place where people can create and collaborate,” said Paula. SOAR is SOARING with 5 star reviews! Bria Gilmore says “SOAR offers such a refreshing environment that takes “work from home” to such a new level. I’m among a wide variety of professionals who I can learn so

much from. This is my first time to work in a space like this, and I have to say that it has met or exceeded every expectation I’ve had thus far. While they are still working out the typical kinks here and there, the warm and welcoming team at SOAR is always open to hearing suggestions and welcome feedback. I get excited about coming in to work from here!” “This place is awesome. Not your run of the mill cookie cutter office space,” says reviewer Bill Sullivan. “If you want to hold training with coworkers or do a presentation with a client. This is a space that will impress! It you just need a productive space to work, and not deal with the distractions of home or the noise and carousel of distractions at the local coffee shop, Soar Co-Working is a place you can do your best work, and be professional. Think it’s not affordable.. think again, can you put a price on productivity.” While another reviewer, Melanie Quattrone, shares “The offices and work spaces are nicely decorated, very clean, and have a great atmosphere. The receptionist I met was friendly and helpful. Professionals and clients would be very comfortable working and meeting here.” Workspace Options - Everybody Loves Options, Right? Whether you need to visit occasionally or daily, SOAR has a plan for you.

Garage Guru

What’s going on with my car?

Brought to you by Christian Brothers Automotive, New Tampa and Wesley Chapel

“That pesky Check Engine Light came on again – the light that looks like a motor. Last time I tightened my gas cap and it went away. Not this time. My friend’s husband says ignore it. I’m a single Mom. I need my car to last. Now’s a bad time for a big bill. I’m so nervous. I cannot get stranded on the side of Highway 75 on my way to work. What’s the truth? Should I be concerned?”

(Arbor Green, New Tampa)

I get it! You’re afraid to drive your car with that light blaring at you. You really need to avoid unneeded car repairs. But, you’re afraid of getting stranded or damaging the only car that gets you to work and the kids to school. What a dilemma. I think I can help. Simple answer is Yes! Be concerned - but don’t panic yet and don’t spend money you don’t have to. First, is the lighted picture of the motor flashing, and is the car “bucking”, or “chugging”, or dying on you? If yes, then be very concerned and tow it to your trusted garage right away. Hopefully you have AAA or check your insurance. You could have towing coverage and don’t know it.

If it’s not flashing and running normallythen be calm, but you’re not out of the woods yet. Don’t ignore it. Your car’s computer has sensors that have detected something it doesn’t like. It’s like your nose smelling something funny and your brain saying you need to check this out. When it’s convenient take it to your garage where they will usually “read fault codes” for free. Experienced Technicians will get an idea how serious the problem might be. However, to determine the correct repair requires “diagnostic testing”, usually costing less than $100. It’s worth it otherwise the Technician is guessing and you could pay for work that does not fix the problem. Hope this helps you feel calmer and more confident that you know what to do now. I’d really like to hear how it turns out. Here’s a question for you to consider: “If I pay for diagnostic testing and authorize the repair you recommend but it doesn’t fix my car, will you still expect me to pay for the work?” Think about that and we’ll take that on next time. We are eager to hear about your car concerns. Is your car acting up or have you wondered about how some part of your car works?
