First of all, I hope that all of you and your loved ones stayed safe during the Hurricane Irma. My husband Matt Selby, my mother and I, drove to Gainesville after being told to evacuate from Hillsborough County Zone “A.” We did have friends and family in other areas of Tampa Bay kindly offering their homes to us, but I convinced my husband to drive us up north, after several news stations made me panic and want to drive somewhere “safer.” This experience definitely taught me a lot, and I am glad that the damage was not nearly as catastrophic as it was expected. In Tampa Bay we got lucky! Even though I cannot say the same about other areas of Florida, which are still without power and thousands of Floridians were left without homes. I learned the value of staying calm, because panicking and stressing does not help anyone, I learned the value of having generators on standby, the value of canned goods and clean water, the value of living in a solid concrete home, the value of knowing the rules of the road at intersections without power, and the value of surrounding yourself with family, good friends and caring neighbors. In this type of situation, it is good knowing that you could knock on the house next door knowing you will be greeted with a smile and offered a place to sleep, a bottle of water and even a hot meal (or protein bar) if you are hungry. I must admit... I am far from being a social butterfly. I am kind of shy and reserved, and always try my best to stay out of other people’s business. So when I was walking around my complex on Harbor Island in the midst of the evacuation, I was shocked and definitely pleased that so many of my neighbors walked up to me to make sure I had a safe place to stay. It warmed my heart, and it made me want to make an effort to say “Good morning Cindy how are your kids?” whenever I see her walking to her car every morning, or “Hi Pete, how is work going?” when I see him walking his dog in the nearby park. It definitely takes a village. Even though what is happening all around the world is pretty disheartening, and it makes you question your faith in God and in humanity, especially when you see news about looters

taking merchandise from closed businesses in the middle of the storm, you have to still have faith. Faith that “this too shall pass,” and we will rebuild and we will get out this stronger than before, as long as we do it together. As long as we help one another, no matter their race, religion or social status. And even though news about people leaving their pets behind broke my heart, hundreds of beautiful stories keep emerging every day since the storm, stories that will warm your heart and make you believe that not all is lost. That there are still good caring people out there willing to step up and help those in need. Multiple businesses that advertise with us have selfishly offered free food, supplies, shelter and incredible discounts on their services for those needing anything from clothing and groceries to tree removal services and debris removal, etc. It is in times like these, that we as a community need to stick together. In my country, Venezuela, which is currently also going through a lot, we have a saying that goes “En La Union Esta La Fuerza,” which means; “The strength is in the joining.” The joining of the families, friends, neighbors, the joining of our Tampa Bay community, the joining of every one of us in our beautiful state of Florida, the joining of this entire country, to help those who need it most. Our sunshine state needs us, our country needs us, Puerto Rico needs us, Mexico needs us. If there is anything you can do to help those in need, please do. Here at Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles we are currently organizing a big drive, and donating supplies to different affected areas. If you want to donate food, water or clothing, please email me directly at carla@nnlflorida.com and we’ll make sure your donations go where they are needed the most. Prayers without action means nothing. Faith without works is dead. “You pray for the hungry. Then you feed them. This is how prayers work.” Pope Francis.

Reflections on a Wesley Chapel Rotary team trip to Honduras

By Eric Johnson

Hiking through the mountain hills on a very small path. Drips of sweat draining down my face. Stopping to catch my breath….. Entering through a small door into a mud hut… mud floors. Why am I coming up on my 8th trip to Honduras?

Children. Hope. Life.

Children not dying from sickness caused by water. Fathers able to work more to provide for their families. Mothers taking care of their homes. A bit dramatic? Well no… just real. Very real. And for the people of Trojes Honduras…a daily reality. As Americans, it’s so difficult for us to realize life without clean water. We take for granted that we can wake up and brush our teeth. That we can turn on the faucet and fill our cups with water that will not cause us to become sick or even worse, be the death of our child. Even for me, after 7 trips to help the people of Trojes, I still take water for granted but I’ve realized that water is essential for life. The great news is that there is hope! There are thousands of families in the communities around Trojes that do not have to live with unsafe water and sanitation conditions anymore because of Pure Water for the World (PWW) and the commitment made to the Honduran people. This is all done one filter, one latrine, one wash-station at a time. One child, one family, one school at a time. Some of my most precious memories I have are from spending time with the children in their homes before we begin installing the water filters. I’m reminded of why I’m there when I kneel down, look into their beautiful eyes and see them smile. I’m sure it’s funny to them how I try to communicate in my broken Spanish….or Spanglish, because I usually get a bunch of giggles from them. The mothers take so much pride in their homes. Painting the walls, sweeping the dirt floors and welcoming us in like they have been waiting for us for years. The community all comes together to see and watch as we begin the process of installing the filters. It’s amazing how many people can fit inside a small kitchen or living space as we work with the smell of wood burning on the clay oven. The process for installing the water filter takes about 45 minutes. Washing the small stones and layering them largest to smallest so as the contaminated water flows through it begins the process of purification. Getting the flow of water right out of the filter is the most important part. Too fast of a flow and the water is not purified. I love that installing a simple water filter changes the lives of a family so much.

4 OCTOBER 2017

So now imagine your children going to a school with no bathrooms or sinks to wash their hands in. Just a simple, open air block structure. No electricity. No running water… can’t imagine it can you. Thousands of children attend schools like this in Trojes. When they need to go to the bathroom, they run outside the school to the side of the mountain. Washing hands is not even really heard of and so you can imagine how the bacteria and disease spreads throughout the schools. This is why PWW has implemented it’s program to build latrines and wash stations at every school in the Trojes region. Along with the building of latrine comes hygiene education. I’ve been in the schools when the PWW representative holds up their hands to show the children how to wash and scrub each finger. This is all part of the amazing change that PWW is making. A typical trip to Trojes involves 2 days of installing water filters, 1 day of building a latrine and 1 day of handing out de-worming medicines in a community. Water filter days are a little tough with all the hiking through the mountains. Latrine day can be a bit exhausting with all the mixing of cement and making the forms. But at the end of each day, when you are finished, and all the teams come together to tell their stories, you realize that you are there for a purpose. My Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Wesley Chapel, is an amazing club! A group of community servants that come together to make a difference! I love the passion that we have, not only for the Wesley Chapel community, but for the World. In the past 6 years, almost 30 of our club members have given of themselves and served the wonderful families in Trojes. It’s not an easy trip. It’s full of adventure, sweat and tears, but the feeling you have when you return…is… well… unforgettable. Another word would be life-changing. Why? Because when you go on a trip to a third world country, you are given an amazing opportunity to see humanity in a different light. To see a different way of living. To come back to America and count your blessings. But I think Khalil Gibran says it best, “You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.” How can you give of yourself today? www.wcrotary.com

The Man Cave Warehouse – The Game Room Starts Here! By Kim Thomas

The Man Cave Warehouse, located at 8811 an employee whose hard work and knowledge

North Gunn Highway in Odessa, is the perfect place to shop for “Man Cave” furnishings, but this gal thinks the sign also should read “She Shed,” because there is something for everyone here! The store may be housed inside a huge “manly” warehouse, but inside it is gorgeous with hundreds of chandeliers and lighting fixtures (both indoor and outdoor) on display and wall-to-wall fun throughout the 5,000-sq.ft. showroom, with everything you need to complete a game room that will bring years of entertainment! If you are considering adding a game room to your home or updating from the ping-pong table, then get over to The Man Cave Warehouse. Family owned and operated by the Klopf family since they opened the store in 1999, The Man Cave Warehouse delivers and sets up all over the state of Florida. “My son’s store may well be the largest in the Southeast United States,” said Al Klopf, Sr., who is semiretired but still works part-time at The Man Cave Warehouse in Odessa. It is possible to meet three generations of the Klopf family at the family-ran business. Al Klopf Jr. and his wife Jeroline own and oversee operations at the Odessa location, and their sons Carson, Cody and Canyon have grown up learning the business and helping customers. Candy is

you are looking for. Some brands offered include Legacy Billiards, Presidential Billiards, Olhausen Billards, California House, Outdoor Billiards and Excaliber Billiards. Legacy Billiards has awarded The Man Cave Warehouse with its “Diamond Dealer” award for the past five years and running. There are gaming tables of every kind, including multipurpose dining/billiards tables that enable homeowners to transform their elegant dining room into an elegant billiards room, or if you’d prefer a dining/poker/craps table, you’ll find it at The Man Cave Warehouse!

Canyon is the youngest of the Klopf clan, but this kid knows his family’s business! Canyon’s enthusiasm was genuine as he pointed out the cool hidden features that many of the billiards tables and game room furnishings have – like the benches for the dining/billiards tables that provide storage for cues and racks and the billiards tables with hidden storage underneath for everything needed for the game, keeping your living space uncluttered.

In addition to carrying the finest billiards tables in the world, The Man Cave Warehouse offers indoor and outdoor lighting, bars and barstools, high-end ceiling fans and custom fans, dart boards and accessories, and décor for your game room. Bar signs run the gamut from neon, to classic, funny, and sports themed. The store is stocked for fun times! Al Sr. showed me the first all-electronic pinball machine, which boasts 426 different games!

First walking in to The Man Cave Warehouse, my eye was drawn to a pool table that was rustic, yet modern. Looking around, I realized there were three or four tables in that style alone. If your taste leans more classic or ornate, The Man Cave Warehouse has what

are valued by the family and their customers. Al and Jeroline’s oldest son Carson is now the owner/operator of The Man Cave Warehouse in Orlando, which features a 3,000-sq.-ft. showroom. If you are looking for quality, white glove delivery and competitive prices, The Man Cave Warehouse is the place to shop.

a game room with the finest new furnishings offered worldwide or would like to spend less and purchase a slightly used, quality table, be sure to visit The Man Cave Warehouse. Customer Dave Rose shares his five-star review, “Great selection of new and used pool tables. I purchased a used table, and they made sure it was in top shape. Brendan delivered and installed the table, including new felt, and he is clearly an expert at what he does. The table is perfect. The store has a great selection of “man cave” supplies... pretty much everything you need for billiards, darts, arcade games, furniture, lights, and lots of other great stuff. Prices seem competitive as well. Basically, good quality for a good price, and great service.” Steven Fisher, another customers that gives The Man Cave Warehouse a five star review, states, “First rate all the way! We furnished an entire billiard room and could not be happier. Everything looks awesome. The staff was very patient and helped us select all our custom pieces. Delivery was white glove all the way. We also came back and got a video game.”

Game Rooms Create Fun Times and Great Memories

The Klopf family knows that playing pool, throwing darts, gathering at the card table is more than just fun and games; it’s a way to build personal skill, challenge your buddies, and most importantly, to bond with family and friends. Some of my favorite memories of visiting my grandparents were playing pool on Granddaddy Pat’s pool table. That pool table moved with him from Dover (near Plant City) to Apalachicola, and was a staple throughout my childhood into my adult years. During the happiest of times and the saddest, inevitably a game of pool would pull everyone together, either because we had our turn at playing or picked a side to root for. If you can create a game room for your family, it will pay you back in spades with good times! The Man Cave Warehouse is located at 8811 N. Gunn Hwy. in Odessa and is open from 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. on Monday – Thursday, and from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Friendly Neighborhood Referral Do you have mosquito problems at your house? My poor wife Carla walks outside and walks back in with 20 bites! Well, at least she use to. My buddy Brandon from Mosquito Hunters - Tampa can almost completely eradicate those pesky bloodsuckers! We all know how annoying it is to be eaten alive and thankfully that can be your choice from now on, now that Mosquito Hunters are in town! I strongly recommend you contact these guys! “A couple quick facts about mosquitoes... Yes, they like type O blood. In couples, most often it’s the woman who gets bit more often than the man. It’s one of the reasons I started my company. Unfortunately, they like to bite my wife and not me. Yes, she smells better. They are attracted to the carbon dioxide we release from our skin. The reason they bite us is because they are using our blood for reproduction. It’s only females that bite us. Their actual food source, and where you will find them at include plants, vegetations, and shrubs. Also you do not need to live near water to have a mosquito problem. A little bottle cap of water can hold 300 eggs. If you have that amount of water in your yard then you might have a mosquito problem. If you don’t clean your gutters you might have a mosquito problem. Three things you can count on in life is death, taxes, and mosquitoes. We are the only western themed krewe and our costume consists of corsets, jeans and chaps for the women; cowboy shirts, jeans and chaps for the men; as well as black cowboy hats and black cowboy boots for all members. Ye Loyal Krewe of Lords and Ladies

Ye Loyal Krewe of Lords and Ladies is a co-ed service based Krewe dedicated to the betterment of our community. We are a 15th century royal Krewe based on the legend of Robin Hood, without the thievery of course. Like the story of Robin Hood we like to keep it local, helping our our neighbors by meeting their specific needs. We have raised money by playing bingo for a new bathroom at Family Promise of Brandon’s day center, collected consumable household products for Everyday Blessings and Christmas gifts for Metropolitan Ministries. We’ve paraded through the streets Tampa, the halls of St Joseph’s children hospital, as well as local nursing homes. If you would like to be a part of something legendary contact us today at Kreweoflordsandladies@ yahoo.com

Garage Guru What’s going on with my car? Brought to you by Christian Brothers Automotive, New Tampa and Wesley Chapel

Brakes: Accelerating is a choice, braking is a requirement. Dear Garage Guru, “I was told my brakes need to be replaced. They feel fine to me.The first estimate was over $200.Then they said we have a $99.00 brake special. How can the price be so different? How do I know when I need my brakes replaced?”

Whoa! Slow down with all the questions! (That’s my one and only brake joke.) There are only a few major safety concerns on a car. Brakes are definitely #1. Accelerating to 60 mph will get you there quick. But if you can’t slow it down, or it pulls, or it pulses, or it grinds then that’s not safe for you, your passengers and others on the road. So make your brakes a priority. First, how do you know when you need your brakes replaced? The answer has to do with 1. pads, 2. calipers and 3. rotors. 1. The most common brake job has to do with replacing pads. Pads are intended to wear thinner over time. New pads are about 10 mm thick. Through normal use, when pads wear to about 3 mm the brakes will still feel normal, but this is a safe time to replace them. If you hear metal scraping and it feels like you are not stopping when you brake, you may have worn all the brake pad off and now the metal backing plate is rubbing against and ruining your metal rotor. Replacing rotors can add around $100 to the cost of a brake job. Pads usually last from 40,000 to 60,000 miles. So, when you are told your brakes need to be replaced, your question should be “How many millimeters are left on the pads?” If they say more than 3 mm or they don’t know, then go somewhere else for an opinion.

back and forth and the car jerks when slowing. Pulsing can also be caused by hot spots. A bit of brake pad material can glue itself to the rotor usually because it was overheated. In either case, warped or hot spots, the brakes will still work but the pulsing is annoying. To get rid of pulsing, sometimes you can resurface the rotor by grinding off a thin layer to make it flat or remove the hot spot. But, it is a 50/50 bet that the problem will return within a few hundred miles. To get rid of pulsing, the best fix is to replace the rotors, and usually the pads too. That was the easy stuff. The hard question is how can a shop offer a brake job for $200 or $99? A reasonable price for a proper brake job for a pair of brakes either on the front or rear is from $200 to $250. This includes replacing the pads with good quality pads, resurfacing the rotor to smooth it out, replacing all the hardware with new hardware, and cleaning and greasing all the slides. Or…………………for $99 some shops will do what’s called a “pad slap.” No one in the industry believes this is a good brake job. A pad slap is taking 15 minutes to pull out the old pads and slide in new low quality, inexpensive pads. If your brakes start scraping metal on metal and you are 100 miles from nowhere, a pad slap may be your only option. Your brakes will work again, but they will not brake correctly, will usually make noise, and will not last long. As soon as you can get to a full service garage, have the brakes serviced correctly. We are eager to hear about your car concerns. Is your car acting up or have you wondered about how some part of your car works? Drop us a note at Marty.labarbera@cbauto.net, and we will offer our honest opinion. Christian Brothers Automotive, where we care for your family by caring for your family car.

2. Calipers are the clamps that squeeze your brake pads against the rotors to brake the car. Calipers can last a long time or if coming from an area with snow and salt on the roads, calipers can become corroded, may lock up and the car won’t stop evenly. You usually should replace calipers in pairs, one on each side of the car, and the pads. The rotors may still be good, or may be rusted and pitted and need to be replaced. 3. Rotors are the round metal discs that the pads rub against to stop the car. Warped rotors that are no longer flat will cause the car to pulse when braking. You can usually feel your pedal push
