Amazing Glaucoma Outcomes! By Matt Selby You’ve probably seen Newsom Eye’s ad on the back cover of our Carrollwood edition for a number of years now. Many of you have made the wise decision of visiting Newsom Eye for a various number of vision concerns and experienced Amazing Outcomes! Your eyes are so important and unfortunately, they’re something we take for granted far too often. If you’re starting to see a difference in your vision or are experiencing symptoms that could lead to an impaired quality of life due to a loss in vision, do yourself a favor and don’t wait another day. Go see Dr. Newsom and his team. They have helped so many people in our community and I wanted to personally take this opportunity to tell you a story about a local resident named Debra Schrils, who currently lives in South Tampa. She’s a shining example of one of Newsom Eye’s Amazing Outcomes!
Debra suffered from a serious case of Glaucoma and didn’t even know it! She was a rare case because she exhibited zero of the tell tale Glaucoma symptoms. Just to give you an idea of how bad it was, normal eye pressure is under 20 and Debra’s eye pressure was 55! A pressure reading of over 30 is grounds for nerve damage and anything over 40 could lead to vision loss and at her pressure reading of 55, she could have gone completely blind if left untreated. Her regular physician referred her to Dr. Newsom after a routine check-up discovered the problem on New Year’s Eve 2009. Naturally concerned about her elevated pressure, Dr. Newsom worked to first reduce the pressure using medications. Comfortable with the results, she went home for the evening and was asked to return on New Year’s Day, January 1st, to re-check her pressure. “Dr. Newsom personally came in on New Year’s Day just to see me because he truly cared about how

I was doing. It just shows what kind of person he is,” said Debra. Fortunately for Debra, her eye pressure was stabilized using the medications and no emergency action was needed at that time. Two weeks later, Dr. Newsom was able to implement a laser corrective surgical procedure that reduced the pressure and permitted Debra’s life to return to normal, no longer in need of those many medications to control her eye pressure. She still uses eye drops but other than that, eight years later, her vision has not deteriorated thanks to Dr. Newsom and his team of medical professionals. Newsom Eye has the most technologically testing available and is proud to have internally developed the Newsom Bladeless Laser Cataract Surgery Technique. Debra says, “I really can’t thank Dr. Newsom enough! He was skilled enough to catch and aggressively treat the type of Glaucoma I was faced with, stop the damage and save my vision! Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles
From The Editor Carla Selby First of all, I hope that all of you and your loved ones stayed safe during the storm. My husband Matt Selby, my mother and I, drove to Gainesville after being told to evacuate from Hillsborough County Zone "A." We did have friends and family in other areas of Tampa Bay kindly offering their homes to us, but I convinced my husband to drive us up north, after several news stations made me panic and want to drive somewhere "safer." This experience definitely taught me a lot, and I am glad that the damage was not nearly as catastrophic as it was expected. In Tampa Bay we got lucky! Even though I cannot say the same about other areas of Florida, which are still without power and thousands of Floridians were left without homes. I learned the value of staying calm, because panicking and stressing does not help anyone… I learned the value of having generators on standby, the value of canned goods and clean water, the value of living in a solid concrete home, the value of knowing the rules of the road at intersections without power, and the value of surrounding yourself with family, good friends and caring neighbors. In this type of situation, it is good knowing that you could knock on the house next door knowing you will be greeted with a smile and offered a place to sleep, a bottle of water and even a hot meal
Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles
(or protein bar) if you are hungry. I must admit... I am not a social butterfly, I am kind of shy and reserved and always try my best to stay out of other people's business. So when I was walking around my complex in the midst of the evacuation, I was shocked and definitely pleased that so many of my neighbors walked up to me to make sure I had a safe place to stay. It warmed my heart, and it made me want to make an effort to say "Good morning Cindy how are your kids?" whenever I see her walking to her car every morning, or "Hi Pete, how is work going?" when I see him walking his dog in the nearby park. It definitely takes a village. Even though what is happening all around the world is pretty disheartening, and it makes you question your faith in God and in humanity, especially when you see news about looters taking merchandise from closed businesses in the middle of the storm, you have to still have faith. Faith that "this too shall pass," and we will rebuild and we will get out this stronger than before, as long as we do it together. As long as we help one another, no matter their race, religion or social status. And even though news about people leaving their pets behind broke my heart, hundreds of beautiful stories keep emerging every day since the storm, stories that will warm your heart and make you believe that not all is lost. That there are still good caring people out there willing to step up and help
those in need. Multiple businesses that advertise with us have selflessly offered free food, supplies, shelter and incredible discounts on their services for those needing anything from clothing and groceries to tree removal services and debris removal, etc. It is in times like these, that we as a community need to stick together. In my country, Venezuela, which is currently also going through a lot, we have a saying that goes "En La Union Esta La Fuerza," which means; "The strength is in the joining." The joining of the families, friends, neighbors, the joining of our Tampa Bay community, the joining of every one of us in our beautiful state of Florida… the joining of this entire country, to help those who need it most. Our sunshine state needs us, our country needs us, Puerto Rico needs us, Mexico needs us. If there is anything you can do to help, please do. Here at Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles are currently organizing a big drive, and donating supplies to different affected areas. If you want to donate food, water or clothing, please email me directly at carla@nnlflorida.com and we'll make sure your donations go where they are needed the most. Prayers without action means nothing. Faith without works is dead. "You pray for the hungry. Then you feed them. This is how prayers work." - Pope Francis. Thank you for reading! Stay safe, humble and united.

Ehrlich Animal Hospital By Marcy Sanford For more than 20 years Ehrlich Animal Hospital & Arthritis Therapy Center has been the place for loving pet owners to take their favorite friends. Originally started by Dr. Langbenh and Dr. Farid Saleh, Ehrlich Animal Hospital now has 5 veterinarians and a staff of more than 30 pet professionals to take care of any pet needs – from annual exams and check ups, to senior pet care, grooming and boarding, surgery and dental care. They recently welcomed the newest member of their team, Dr. Brian Gibbs. Pet owners love the caring staff at Ehrlich Animal Hospital! They also enjoy the convenience of having one place for all of their pet’s veterinary needs and the fact that Ehrlich Animal Hospital is open 7 days a week and offers early morning and after work hours. difficult to see the dog you remember scampering after toys as a puppy moving slower and with difficulty. Ehrlich Animal Hospital offers therapies and treatments for senior pets with arthritis that will have them chasing after their favorite toy again. “Dogs and cats often don’t always voice their pain,” said Dr. Saleh. “Some of the signs that they might be suffering from arthritis include not wanting to go for walks, not playing, taking a longer time to stand up and lay down.” Dr. Saleh says that animals will tolerate a lot more pain than humans . Therefore, by the time they are groaning, they are probably really hurting. “We have lots of different therapies for pets with arthritis – Including diet and nutritional supplements. Weight loss in overweight pets can make a big difference. They can also take medication.” Dr. Saleh says that often a combination of therapies works best but that he has seen great effectiveness with platelet rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapies. Because both
Dr.Saleh examining a patient therapies use blood and tissue from the animal’s own body, there is no negative reaction and you may see a benefit to your pet within just one week. “We looked into stem cell therapy because our dog Griff had been on medication for arthritis for more than 6 years but we noticed he was slowing down and we wanted to ease his pain. We could tell he was not comfortable anymore,” said the Smedley family. “One of the most important aspects of

this treatment is how we see a huge positive response from Griff and how he feels…you can’t fake feeling good…he feels dramatically better than he did a few months ago.” In addition to PRP and stem cell therapies, Ehrlich Animal Hospital also offers K-laser treatment to target affected areas. All procedures can be done in house on the same day. “We started offering stem cell and PRP therapy 7 years ago,” said Dr. Saleh, “and we’ve seen really good

They even offer tours of the facilities to owners. “Anyone is welcome to come in at anytime and take a tour,” says Dr. Saleh. “We know that it can be stressful when you have to drop your pet off for tests and want you to have a visual of where you pet is and know that they are being cared for.” “Words cannot describe how grateful we are for your wonderful care and knowledge,” said a loving couple of cat owners who visited Ehrlich Animal Hospital recently. “Thank you for going the extra mile for Salem-Blinks. Your care and compassion really made us feel that we were doing the best treatment possible. Thank you to each and every one of you for offering to call us for updates, offering us water or coffee when we visited before the sun was up, letting us visit whenever we wanted, being so patient, answering our questions and making us feel as comfortable as possible leaving our sick baby at your facility.” No matter what is ailing your pet, Ehrlich Animal Hospital’s loving doctors and staff will make sure that they are doing all they can to help him or her heal while keeping you informed the whole time. Keeping Pets Healthy: A big part of the day at Ehrlich Animal Hospital is keeping pets healthy and most of the patients at Ehrlich Animal Hospital have been with them since they were pups or kittens. Wheatfields Cafe Bakery; With Passion and Hard Work a Savory Dream was Born! by Carla Selby Founded and operated by Guy and Nadia Driver, Wheatfields Cafe Bakery is the official home of the Savory Pocket. The dream was born from the couple’s strong passion for baked goods and a burning desire to share their famous South African meat pies with all of us here in the USA. “We are taking something that we grew up eating and loving in its traditional form and flavor, and adding tasty ingredients and spices that have never been tried until we said, "We are the 'Pie Maker's for the people!” says Guy. “We love making meat pies and because we also love the USA we wanted to make sure we could offer our savory pockets here for you to experience.” Luckily for us, out of all the places in the country they could have gone, Guy and Nadia ended up here in Tampa Bay! Guy and Nadia’s daring and exciting savory pocket adventure started a few years ago at local farmers markets and their dream evolved to the adorable and cozy brick and mortar location they run today in our wonderful Carrollwood neighborhood. “We feel at home here in Carrollwood,” says Guy. “Because we had been doing the Carrollwood Farmers market at the Cultural Center for the past three years and we found it to be one of our best markets which made Carrollwood the obvious choice,” says Guy. Conveniently located at 10434 N Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa FL 33618, (between Linebaugh Ave and Floyd Rd) Wheatfields Cafe

bakery is your one stop shop for an affordable and filling savory meal with a sweet ending.
What is a Meat Pie/ Savory Pocket? Meat pies are extremely popular in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, where Guy and Nadia Driver are originally from. Guy says, “Growing up in South Africa, we were raised to enjoy Meat Pies, just like the Australian, New Zealanders and the British. We bought pies at bakeries, supermarkets, convenience stores, sporting events etc.” Meat pies for them are pretty much what Hamburgers and Hot Dogs are to Americans. “The funny thing is that the meat pie is by no means a totally new product in America,” Guy says. “It's the presentation that is different! But other than that, it's everything we already eat here in the USA.” Made fresh daily with golden flaky puff Pastry, Wheatfields’ “savory pockets” or meat pies are stuffed with rich savory gourmet fillings and tantalizing sauces. Made only with Real 100% beef, chicken or pork. veggies, herbs and spices. “We use only the finest and freshest ingredients,” says Guy, "pure goodness to create the most delicious Meat Pies that will fill your belly and warm your heart” Wheatfields Cafe Bakery offers 15 great varieties of meat pies including; Chicken Potato, Bourbon Pork, Chicken Curry, Philly Cheesesteak, my personal favorite; Steak and Stout, Spinach Feta and Sundried Tomato Pesto, Shepherd’s Pie, Bacon Egg and

remember the first time I walked inside Wheatfields Cafe Bakery, it was only a few days after my father had passed away so I looked like a wreck. Nadia must have sensed something was wrong because she immediately came from behind the counter and gave me the warmest of hugs! She made me feel right at home, offered me freshly brewed coffee and even gifted me some chocolates which she heard me say were my father’s favorite. I could tell that I was somewhere really special, where friends and family were a priority. “Here at Savory Pockets we love our friends and family. And that is exactly how we perfected our delicious and uniquely flavored meat pies for people in the USA,” says Nadia. “Sitting around our very own dinning table in conversation and
laughter, taste testing our pies with friends and their kids!” Wheat fields is not only family owned and operated by Guy and Nadia, but their youngest son Micah has recently graduated high-school and is also working with them. “Our oldest son Kyle is now proudly serving in the United States Army, and his wife Melanie also works with us,” says Nadia. Guy and Nadia are as hard working as they are passionate about their business, and they are also firm believers of God and his mercy. “We at Savory Pockets rely on the awesomeness not only of our product, but we rely on the Faithfulness of the Lord Jesus Christ who is head of our home and our business,” Guy says. “And I boldly would like to state that because of the Lord, we will be extremely successful (not by my might but by His.)” Wheatfields offers catering services, which can be picked up at the store and offer discounted pricing and

SAT/ACT IMPROVEMENT by Dr. Wayne Adams With the rescheduling complete for the postponed ACT Exam of September 9th, the fall exam schedule is back on track. The ACT Exams are October 28th and December 9th, the SAT Exams are on October 7th, November 4th, and December 2nd. The main PSAT Exam is on October 11th, although a few high schools give theirs on October 25th. Now that seniors are focusing on submitting college applications, UF is rapidly approaching with a “drop dead” deadline of November 1st. This is a very firm date, and the SAT and ACT Exams can be received later than the actual application. Check their website for specifics.Unless a student is applying for early admission (EA) or early decision (ED), most colleges have their application deadline around January 1st. The EA and ED deadlines tend to be in early to mid-November, but in almost every case the SAT or ACT scores can be received about a month later. Again, check the website for any specific colleges. I thought you might like to see

some sample SAT and ACT scores for the following universities by way of comparison. After the name of the school is the score for the 25th percentile and 75th percentile of students admitted in 2016 for the SAT and then the ACT. You can get these comparable numbers for almost all schools by searching by the name of your target school and SAT and ACT scores for admission 2017. For more information, go to U.S. News Releases 2018 Best Colleges Rankings. Harvard: SAT 1430-1600, ACT 32-35; Yale: SAT 1420-1600, ACT 3335; Cornell: 1330-1530, ACT 31-34. UF: 1250-1420, ACT 27-31; FSU: 1210-1360, ACT 25-29; USF: SAT 1140-1330; ACT 24-28; UCF: SAT 1080-1270, ACT 24-28; University of Miami: SAT 12101390, ACT 28-32. More important, here are the average costs to attend per year and the average salary after graduation for these same schools. You can find the specifics for almost any school by going to college scorecard on the internet. Harvard: $14,068, $95,500;
Yale: $20,168, $74,200; Cornell: $29,240, $72,100. UF: $11,778, $51,100; FSU: $15,847; $44,000; USF: $10,027, $41,000; UCF: $13,724, $42,900; UM: $32,297, $54,500. You may wonder why Harvard is so low for annual cost to attend. The answer is because admissions are “need blind”, they have $35 billion in endowment, and if a family makes less than around $70,000 a year they offer a “full ride”. Many of the other “top 25” universities have similar programs with different income levels. When you

fill out the FASFA form, they key to college grants and other support is the Expected Family Contribution, or EFC. The lower your EFC, normally the more scholarship/grant money you can obtain. Yes, you can negotiate with colleges and universities about costs, if you know how. This is why every one of my students receives a copy of my special supplement, “How to Negotiate with Colleges” which has helped many of my students save $1,000 to $10,000 a year in college costs. Also, every student receives a

copy of my 104 page book, “How to Write College Application Essays that Colleges will Love”, including background and over 40 sample essays with my comments. During the past year, I have seen three major trends. First, more students with high GPAs are having trouble scoring at a level commensurate with their other academic performance. Second, more students are preferring to take the ACT than the SAT. And third, many more juniors and sophomores are starting early to prepare early to do their best on the SAT and the ACT Exams. The good news is that student usually score about 15 percentiles higher on one or the other. The bad news is that we don’t know which until they take them both. This is one reason why I offer a combination SAT/ACT prep class that saves 15 hours of class time compared to preparing for them separately. If You Would Like To Talk More About How I Can Help Your Student, please contact me at 727253-0639 or at wwa0811@mykolab.com. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve 200 – 350 points on the

Writing, Reading, Writing and Essay, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to eight of the top ten universities in the country, seventeen of the top twenty-five, and many schools in Florida. These schools include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Air Force and Merchant Marine Service Academies, Penn State, LSU, Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, FIU, New College of Florida, Stetson, and Julliard – Manhattan - New England - and Berkley Conservatories of Music. Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. This year, he also tutored three juniors who scored at the national merit finalist/semi-finalist levels on the most recent PSAT. Have a claim? Call Shawn and get the money you deserve! By Matt Selby
Shawn Thompson works for you, not the insurance company! Don’t trust that an insurance adjuster has your best interest at heart, they don’t! They will almost always low ball your claim amount and sadly, many times look over things that need to be done to get your home or automobile back to it’s original condition before the devastation. Equitable public adjusters handle auto, residential and commercial claims so no matter what untimely event strikes, they will be there for you when you need them.
I asked Shawn about a recent claim he helped with where the insurance company paid a fraction of what was needed and he absolutely floored me with his response. “A recent claim I handled for a Chiropractor in St. Pete is a good example of how we can help on commercial claims that were handled poorly by the Insurance adjuster. Prior to our involvement the insured was paid only $3,075.38 for damage done to the structure of the office. After our involvement we were able to recover an additional $75,104.21 which was broken down into the follow coverages: $1,599.59 for

dry out services; $20,000 additional for structure damages and moving fees; $45,813.04 for damaged equipment and $7,691.58 for loss of income due to time they were closed and revenue lost due to damaged equipment,” said Shawn. Then I asked him about an auto related claim and again, I was amazed at the difference Equitable Public adjusters made. Shawn explained, “We handled a claim recently for an auto dealership that actually had a vehicle crash into it. The settlement before our involvement was $10,401.32 and

we settled the file for a total of $42,757.93!” “This one is not commercial, but a good example for the typical homeowner. A toilet flange broke in the upstairs bathroom and leaked sewage into the ceiling and walls of the bathroom beneath it. Before our involvement the insured was offered $700 to repair some drywall and paint. After our involvement the settlement offer was increased to $16,558.31 to include mold remediation and replacement of both bathrooms.” Unfortunately bad things happen to good people all the

Testing can be extensive as the team at Newsom Eye aims to learn as much as possible about each patient, and the progression of the disease so that the team can effectively treat and correct the issue. Dr. Newsom stated, “We were more than happy to see Debra on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day to help save her vision from a potentially dangerous case of Glaucoma, in addition to treating her over the last eight years. What Is Glaucoma? Glaucoma is one of the world’s leading causes of blindness. It tends to affect older patients although it can
develop in children and young adults. The most common form is Primary Open Angle Glaucoma where the drain of the eye is open. The most severe form is Acute Narrow Angle Glaucoma where the drain of the eye is closed. There are other sub-varieties

Specialist, Dr. Vinita Srivastava, noted that most patients with Glaucoma have high intraocular pressure (IOP). However, patients with low pressure can still develop Glaucoma. Of course, pressure is still a very important indicator that is typically used as a measuring tool for the disease, but it is definitely not the only measurement used for diagnosis and treatment. A glaucoma suspect is a patient that presents with one of many possible risk factors. Newsom Eye performs a complete work up to determine if the suspect has Glaucoma. Much like diabetes and high blood pressure, it is sometimes difficult to diagnose Glaucoma immediately. Testing is needed to confirm the diagnosis or label the individual as a “watch patient”. Even if a patient does not have elevated pressure, other symptoms, or any family history of Glaucoma, Newsom Eye’s team will take all precautions to prevent and maintain the best possible outcomes.

Home Mobility Solutions By Michelle Natkin It was a day of frustration for a gentleman celebrating his 90th birthday. He was in the kitchen of his home, straining to reach the cabinet where his glasses were. His fingers have become almost useless, and his right arm hung from a tear in his rotator cuff. Just brushing his hair that morning was a struggle. “It makes me mad,” he said, “what my life had turned into.” The unfortunate effects of aging have taken a toll. Looking at it from a different perspective, this was just another day in the long and happy life he’s lived “I’ve had a good life,” he said quietly as he began reminiscing and reflecting back upon his life, remembering his younger years, his successes and the high points of his life, which became more vivid to him than his recent past. “Things have just become hard,” he added. This story is as heartbreaking as it is true for many seniors today. The reality is many of us will experience at least a temporary disability during our lifetime. Whether

Philipe Tavernier is a Graduate of Catholic University Of Leuven, Belgium and also has his Executive Certificate in Home Modifications from the University of Southern California. He has been working alongside Michael for several years also specializing in Physical Therapy in both outpatient and home care settings. The frustrations are real for those young and old who are experiencing disabilities and restrictions in their every day. Unfortunately those frustrations can become overwhelming for all loved ones involved. After seeing these issues time and time again, Mike and Philipe Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles
knew it was time to do something. They put their heads together and created Home Mobility Solutions. When patients experience new limitations they need help maintaining a safe home environment to preserve their comfort and independence. Patients often have little time to decide how to address the limitations of newlyacquired disabilities. Some may choose to use contractors through The ADA or Americans with Disabilities Act.
