First of all, I hope that all of you and your loved ones stayed safe during the Hurricane Irma. My husband Matt Selby, my mother and I, drove to Gainesville after being told to evacuate from Hillsborough County Zone “A.” We did have friends and family in other areas of Tampa Bay kindly offering their homes to us, but I convinced my husband to drive us up north, after several news stations made me panic and want to drive somewhere “safer.” This experience definitely taught me a lot, and I am glad that the damage was not nearly as catastrophic as it was expected. In Tampa Bay we got lucky! Even though I cannot say the same about other areas of Florida, which are still without power and thousands of Floridians were left without homes. I learned the value of staying calm, because panicking and stressing does not help anyone, I learned the value of having generators on standby, the value of canned goods and clean water, the value of living in a solid concrete home, the value of knowing the rules of the road at intersections without power, and the value of surrounding yourself with family, good friends and caring neighbors. In this type of situation, it is good knowing that you could knock on the house next door knowing you will be greeted with a smile and offered a place to sleep, a bottle of water and even a hot meal (or protein bar) if you are hungry. I must admit... I am far from being a social butterfly. I am kind of shy and reserved, and always try my best to stay out of other people’s business. So when I was walking around my complex on Harbor Island in the midst of the evacuation, I was shocked and definitely pleased that so many of my neighbors walked up to me to make sure I had a safe place to stay. It warmed my heart, and it made me want to make an effort to say “Good morning Cindy how are your kids?” whenever I see her walking to her car every morning, or “Hi Pete, how is work going?” when I see him walking his dog in the nearby park. It definitely takes a village. Even though what is happening all around the world is pretty disheartening, and it makes you question your faith in God and in humanity, especially when you see news about looters taking merchandise from closed businesses

in the middle of the storm, you have to still have faith. Faith that “this too shall pass,” and we will rebuild and we will get out this stronger than before, as long as we do it together. As long as we help one another, no matter their race, religion or social status. And even though news about people leaving their pets behind broke my heart, hundreds of beautiful stories keep emerging every day since the storm, stories that will warm your heart and make you believe that not all is lost. That there are still good caring people out there willing to step up and help those in need. Multiple businesses that advertise with us have selfishly offered free food, supplies, shelter and incredible discounts on their services for those needing anything from clothing and groceries to tree removal services and debris removal, etc. It is in times like these, that we as a community need to stick together. In my country, Venezuela, which is currently also going through a lot, we have a saying that goes “En La Union Esta La Fuerza,” which means; “The strength is in the joining.” The joining of the families, friends, neighbors, the joining of our Tampa Bay community, the joining of every one of us in our beautiful state of Florida, the joining of this entire country, to help those who need it most. Our sunshine state needs us, our country needs us, Puerto Rico needs us, Mexico needs us. If there is anything you can do to help those in need, please do. Here at Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles we are currently organizing a big drive, and donating supplies to different affected areas. If you want to donate food, water or clothing, please email me directly at carla@nnlflorida.com and we’ll make sure your donations go where they are needed the most. Prayers without action means nothing. Faith without works is dead. “You pray for the hungry. Then you feed them. This is how prayers work.” Pope Francis.

Thank you for reading!

Ed Francisco, DDS

Ed Francisco, DDS is a very likable and relatable man. He’s a local guy who’s lived in the beautiful Hyde Park community of South Tampa since 1996. His residency at the University of Florida brought him to our state from Virginia, and he decided this warm weather of ours, was too good to abandon. So after looking around different areas to set roots in, Dr. Francisco decided Tampa would be his home.

enjoys her dental visits. “From day one, Dr. Francisco and his staff have made me feel like family,” says Kate. “I’ve been a patient for over a year now and everyone I know in this area always have the nicest things to say about him. He’s so easy going and simply a nice guy as well as very honest and straight forward. He’s all you can really ask for in your dentist, and it’s why I’ve referred him to many of my friends, co-workers and family.”

Dr. Francisco is a very active man. He begins each day with at least a mile run, sometimes two or more, if he’s feeling up to it, before starting his rewarding and fulfilling job of taking care of his patients. Dr. Ed tells me the feeling he gets from running wakes him up and focuses him for the remainder of the day. He tries hard to eliminate stimulants, such as caffeine, out of his diet as much as possible. This allows him to perform at optimal levels with a steady hand. “Running gets me going, it’s my coffee,” says Dr. Ed with a grin.

We always like to ask local business owners why they got into their particular field in the first place. When I asked Dr. Francisco the question, he said he knew from a very young age he wanted to be in the healthcare profession. It wasn’t until his sophomore year of college that he decided dentistry was the right fit for him. “I always planned on being in healthcare of some sort. My parents were definitely a big influence on me,” says Dr. Francisco. Both of his parents were hardworking professionals and really encouraged him to follow his passion. “Both my Mom and Dad were very encouraging of my decision to purse a career in healthcare,” says Dr. Francisco. “My Mom was an RN and my Dad was an accountant. Very quickly I knew, I didn’t want to be an accountant,” he adds with a laugh and a big smile on his face.

Dr. Francisco has a very soothing sound to his voice and he is always smiling. I immediately noticed why so many of his patients rave about how comfortable he makes them feel. While in the spacious and comfortable office waiting room, I caught up with Kate S. from South Tampa, a current patient of Dr. Francisco’s. Kate shared with me that she feels extremely comfortable with Dr. Ed and his staff, and she actually

Knowing he wouldn’t be a good accountant, and feeling an inclination to help people, Dr. Francisco knew healthcare was a better option for him.

Dr. Ed Francisco always knew he wanted to work in a profession where he could help people and make a difference in their lives. “My Mom always told me how rewarding it was helping people. She was a head Nurse, a director of nursing, so she went through the gamut and experienced so much over her over 50 year career. I saw the stability of the medical profession as well as, for lack of a better term. My OCD which made me realize Dentistry would be the right fit and that hit me about my second year of College.” Dr. Francisco adds “I feel pretty proud of my parents and truly appreciate their incredible support. I also feel very proud of how hard I worked getting my double major in 4 yrs. I was a double major in Biology and Math.”

There’s no need to be embarrassed if you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, because you will be in excellent hands with Dr. Francisco and his staff. Services Offered at Dr. Francisco’s office include; Hygiene, Bridges, Crowns, Fillings, Dental implants, Impactions & Wisdom, Periodontal Disease and Whitening. In the early days of his practice, the whitening craze began and many of his first patients were primarily cosmetic. That of course has changed over the years, but white teeth will always be in style. I’ve personally done the Zoom Whitening a few years back and it visibly whitened my teeth a number of shades. I must admit, my teeth stayed pretty darn close to the same whitened shade years later, in spite of my regular cups of coffee and occasional sodas. Maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the most important things you can do for your overall health. Regular Cleanings are imperative for keeping a healthy mouth. Preventative care is always easier than treating a mouth that’s been neglected. Although, there’s no need to be embarrassed if you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, because you will be in excellent hands with Dr. Francisco and his staff.

If your teeth are showing signs of decay and cavities have formed, Dr. Ed will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and fill the area that was removed. Fillings that match your teeth coloring and shade are the norm now, so no need to worry about unsightly metal in your mouth for people to see when you laugh. If crowns become necessary, nobody will ever know. Dr. Francisco does an excellent job color matching full crowns as well. Most of the patients are between the ages of 30 and 45 but Dr. Francisco has patients ranging from 2 years of age all the way to elderly folks in their 90s! “I have multiple generations of patients coming in now and it’s really cool to see,” says Dr. Ed. “Some of my patients came in as kids and now I treat their children. I really love what I do and I love the people of this community. Dentistry is very rewarding, giving me the opportunity to help people with their smile, help them speak, fix a broken tooth, etc. I just want to take this opportunity to tell all of you THANK YOU!” To learn more about Ed Francisco, DDS give his office a call at 813-251-4432 or drop by his office 2210 South MacDill Ave, Tampa, Florida 33629.

You Can

Own The House Of

YOUR DREAMS

The lease with a Right to Purchase Program allows you to find a home that you want to rent initially, but may also like to buy in the next three to five years. There are many households who may be thinking about buying a home but for whatever reason would like to rent at the current time. You can lease the home for three to five one-year terms, depending on the state, and you may purchase the home at any time at a predetermined price in accordance with the Right to Purchase agreement. You are only obligated to the first year lease, Once the oneyear lease is fulfilled you do not have to purchase or continue to lease the home. Monthly rent payments are not applied to the purchase price of the home. You should work with Tamara to search for homes that meet the purchasing criteria according to the program. Generally, this means that the home should be: 1. Located in an approved community (not adjacent to features that may negatively impair value); 2. Listed for between $100,000 and $550,000 in most states, though exceptions apply in California, Oregon, Virginia and Washington. 3. Located on a lot no more than three acres with a minimum of two bedrooms; 4. A single family home or fee-simple townhome; condo associations, condo interests, commercial

and multi-family properties are not eligible for the RTP Program; 5. A traditional sale. Short sales, auctions, and REOs are not eligible for the RTP Program; and; 6. Free from material deficiencies (e.g., major structural issues, pervasive mold, etc.); 7. No guest houses/ in-law suits with separate entrances; Once you have selected a home, let Tamara handle the rest.

On average, it takes approximately six to eight weeks from the time the realtor enters into a purchase agreement for a home until the day you are able to move in. There are a number of variables that may affect the move-in timeframe, including the length of negotiation with the seller leading up to when we enter into a purchase agreement, what the home inspection reveals with respect to required repairs, and the renovations you request. We will keep you informed throughout the entire purchase and renovation process so that you are aware of this timing.

Bay Leaves; Enjoy a Culinary Discovery of Exquisite India By Carla Dubis Owner Saji Mathew has knocked it out of the park… again! Bay Leaves is Curry Leaves’ sister restaurant, and Saji’s latest culinary venture that seeks to bring the mouthwatering taste of authentic Indian Cuisines to the Tampa Bay area.

Fresh food made to order, impeccable presentation, attentive and caring staff and a menu that aims to please, will quickly make Bay Leaves, the best Indian Restaurant in town… right next to Curry Leaves, of course! Saji, who now owns and operates two of my all time favorite Indian restaurants in Tampa, is the guy we can all thank for opening the doors to this neighborhood gem. Saji and his staff make writing about food such a pleasure, and I personally feel so incredibly happy and lucky whenever I get to write about a place that is without a doubt, one of the best restaurants in the city. Greeting us with a big genuine smile when we walked in, the staff at Bay Leaves, the new Indian Restaurant located on 4023 W Waters Ave, makes you feel welcomed and right at home. Once seated, you are promptly offered something to drink while you browse through the menu. If the menu feels strangely familiar, that is because Bay Leaves offers a lot of the same dishes that Curry Leaves does. But with some new exciting additions, and the option of enjoying your meal with either a glass of wine or a cold beer. Andrew Harber rates Bay Leaves 5 stars on google and says; “What can I say? This restaurant is excellent! The owners and their culinary team prepare the finest of Indian cuisine in Tampa! Similar to their sister restaurant, Curry Leaves, but they also have beer and wine and a few more specialized menu items. Every time I walk in they greet me and treat me like family. I like my food spicy but my girlfriend doesn’t. We both get exactly what want.” The chefs at Bay Leaves pay close attention to the quality and balance of saffron, curry, fenugreek, ginger, cumin and coriander, making each dish a masterpiece of perfectly combined spices and flavors.

Whenever you go visit either

Curry Leaves or Bay Leaves, please start your meal with an order of Cheese Naan, you will thank me later, or possibly hate me... since you will become addicted and crave it on a regular basis.

Bhel Poori Chat

One of my all-time favorite appetizers and a staple in the Indian food game ---the Vegetarian Samosas--- are crispy golden pieces of heaven. They are stuffed with a spiced potato-pea filling fried to perfection, and come with two different dipping sauces. One has a tamarind base, and the green dipping sauce has more of a garlic, ginger and mint-cilantro base. With each bite, I wanted another (the dish comes with three per order), and I could easily eat all of them. Now I’ve eaten Indian Food many times, but there were a couple of dishes on the Bay Leaves menu I’d never tried before, and I couldn’t be happier I decided to try something new. Our waiter suggested the “Garlic Shrimp,” as a second appetizer and I was pleasantly surprised when the dish arrived. I was expecting sautéed shrimp with garlic, but I was served HUGE deep fried battered shrimp, cooked with a red sweet and sour sauce, onions and peppers. It was without a doubt, the best non-veggie appetizer I have ever had in an Indian Restaurant. The crunchiness of the shrimp, with the thick blend of sweet and sour, was a nice unexpected treat. It was more on the medium spice level, so if you’re not really into spicy food, you may not enjoy it as much as I did. Since I was feeling adventurous, I decided not to order my favorite entree this time around (the chicken tikka) and went with another suggestion from the staff; the Lamb Biriyani. All I can say is… Wow! and… WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN MY ENTIRE LIFE BIRIYANI RICE?!. This is now another favorite dish… If you are an Indian food newbie, and you’re not really into very spicy food but you want to give your tastebuds an explosion of new flavors and spices, try it. This rice dish is made with saffron basmati rice and big pieces of lamb cooked with the chef’s own blend of spices. It comes with a refreshing yogurt sauce on the side, so you can pour it on top of the rice and make it even more delicious than it already is by itself. What’s pretty great about this rice dish is that you can pick your favorite protein to go with it. I chose lamb

because I wanted to try something different, but you can choose to have your biriyani rice with fish, shrimp, chicken, goat or you could also enjoy it with mixed veggies. Vegetarians can rejoice in the multiple options Bay Leaves offers. The restaurant strives to give that extra attention to anyone wanting a vegetarian or gluten-free dish. You may think that these dishes might not be as flavorful, etc. But that’s not a worry here, every dish, vegetarian or not, is marvelous and delicious. And with plenty of chicken, fish and lamb dishes packed with a punch that are sure to delight any meat eater, Bay Leaves is the kind of restaurant that has something for everyone.

Don’t forget to leave some room for dessert!

Just when I thought I couldn’t eat anymore and was ready for a nap, our waiter surprised us with a Caramel Butterscotch Banana Dosa. This interesting and delicious dessert is perfect for sharing. It tastes like a thin pancake and is served with warm chocolate syrup and caramel butterscotch sauce and stuffed with warm caramelized bananas… is your mouth watering yet?

Bay Leaves is located at 4023 W Waters Ave, Tampa, FL 33614.

You can dine in, take out or get their delicious food delivered straight to your door for those nextflix and chill type of nights. Visit bayleavesindiancuisine.com for a full menu and hours of operation.
