It would take a lot more room than I have in this article t o describe all the wonderful things you can find at The Hen House. In fact, everywhere I walked in the store, I found myself oohing and aweing over something else! Clothes, candles, jewelry, soaps and lotions, pillows, kids’ toys and baby lovies - an inventory that is constantly changing and being

updated, there is always something new to see. “The delivery man is my new best friend,” jokes coowner Molly Voth. She and friends and co-owners Shannon Ater and Anna Richardson met many years ago in church and always talked about opening a store together. In April of last year those long talks and discussed dreams became a reality when they opened The Hen House located in Carrollwood in

April is Autism Awareness Month By Editor Carla Selby The eleventh annual World Autism Awareness day was April 2, 2018. In addition to using a puzzle piece as an icon, the official color for National Autism Awareness Month is a bright royal blue. Joined by the international community, hundreds of thousands of landmarks, buildings, homes and communities in Tampa Bay and around the world, used blue lights in recognition of people living with Autism. Autismfriendly events and community educational activities have been, and will be taking place in our city throughout the entire month of April. These events and activities increase the understanding and acceptance and foster Autism support, while providing fundraising and much needed donation opportunities. I would personally like to take this opportunity to invite you to join me and the entire Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles team in an effort to promote autism awareness, autism acceptance and to draw attention to the tens of thousands of Americans facing an autism diagnosis each year. What Can I Do To Show My Support? Visit any of the following charities and non-profit organization's websites to learn more about the condition and how they are helping people in our community, connect with your neighborhood by attending local events, share your personal autism stories with others online, donate to a charity or organization, get involved! I encourage all of our readers to learn more about autism and what they can do to support individuals on the autism spectrum and their families. Autism Foundation of Tampa Bay:

Reese is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Jennifer Steed to her Lutz practice, JC Audiology, where she has served more than 2,200 patients since she opened the clinic in 2005. “We’ve seen a steadily increasing number of patients here.” Dr. Reese explains. “With new hearing technology and studies concluding how important it is for hearing loss to be treated for enduring cognitive benefit, I needed another expert to help so that patients won’t have to wait so long for appointments.” Dr. Steed has the expertise to step in immediately and serve those seeking hearing help. She is a highly experienced audiologist who has served thousands of patients in her career with the Central Florida Speech and Hearing Center in Lakeland as well as in Ear, Nose, and Throat practices in the central Florida region. has served as a mentor for graduate Audiologystudents and was the lead audiologist on pediatric craniofacial/cleft palate team meetings through Children’s Medical Services Polk County. Additionally, she has provided seminars and lectures to the community regarding hearing health, hearing loss and current treatments available. Dr. Steed is proficient in diagnostic testing with patients of all ages, including difficult to test populations, and her years of experience in hearing aid selection and fitting, counseling and preceptor roles, all make her one of the most well-respected dispensers of hearing technology around. “I have a passion for helping people communicate well,” She explains. “And communicate with purpose.” Dr. Steed is driven to provide quality hearing health care and enrich the profession, saying: “I have worked as a clinical audiologist since 2003, and have witnessed first hand the life changing power of my profession. We are made with the desire to interact with each other: friends, colleagues,

My desire is to be the link that restores hearing to people so that their quality of life is forever changed for the better. I enjoy teaching and passing on the knowledge I have gained in these past years, and currently serve as a mentor and preceptor to graduateaudiology students.” In addition to treating hearing loss

It’s a serious transaction with significant financial and emotional ramifications for the parties involved, and having proper representation is critical. “Buying and / or selling a home is one of the most important decisions a person can make in their lifetime, and it’s extremely rewarding and an honor to be part of that process,” said Amani Warden, a Real Estate Consultant with over 20 years of experience under her belt. When combined with their staff, the spa is a getaway for those seeking pain relief, a need for relaxation, or treatment for a variety of skin care issues. At this family owned and operated spa, healing and rejuvenation can be found. Maggie is a licensed Massage Therapist, Esthetician, and an education provider. A graduate of Florida State University and Sunstate Academy, she has 9 years of work experience in spas and chiropractic settings. The modalities that she specializes in include prenatal, neuromuscular, myofascial release, sports, deep tissue, relaxation and more! As an esthetician, she offers facials with enhancements of Microdermabrasion, Glycolic or T.C.A. peels, and treatment for adult and pediatric acne. For those

looking to turn back time, she also offers anti-aging care with various types of facial treatments to address fine lines, wrinkles, and skin hydration in our

The name Mercy means compassion and compassion for others is what motivates Mercy as she works with clients to exceed their expectations. After being a stay at home mom for fifteen years, Mercy decided to join her sister as a Massage Therapist. She graduated from the massage therapy program at Sunstate Academy. Born with Aniridia, Mercy is legally blind. Her hands, she said, have become her eyes as she works with clients. Her longtime clients can attest to her abilities to heal. One client, Colleen, had severe back pain for many years. She went to several Massage Therapists and chiropractors for treatment with no relief. She said of Mercy, “I feel like she’s a healer. When you have a problem, she knows every single muscle in the body and that’s uncommon. Her knowledge really makes a difference.” The sisters’ passion for massage therapy stemmed from their own experiences which led them to seek treatment for themselves. “We both got results with massage therapy. Once I started learning about what massage therapy could do for people with pain, I realized this is my passion,” Mercy explained. With her passion discovered,

she then took the advice her grandmother had given her many years ago. “She told us ‘Once you realize what you love to do, you’ll never work another day in your life.’” Doing what they love, Mercy and Maggie opened Divine Connections Massage & Spa. As they added other staff members, it was important to them that the level of service be consistent

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

with each therapist. Even with prior experience, each staff member is trained in the myriad of techniques that Maggie and Mercy use for their clients. Therapists added to their staff are heavily vetted to ensure their histories are free of any negative past experience. They offer male and female therapists while treating adults as well as children. Guardians of minors are welcome to

stay in the room while children are being treated if they desire. Children involved in sports such as football, soccer, color guard, gymnastics, etc benefit from massage to enhance performance, prevent injuries and heal after an injury. Three levels of massage are offered at Divine Connections Massage and Spa. Swedish massage offers relaxation and helps increase circulation. It also provides cardiovascular and lymphatic relief. Benefits don’t stop there as it also allows for the Parasympathetic Nervous system to become homeostasis, or the ability to maintain internal stability. In turn, this could help with fatigue, anxiety, and depression. A therapeutic massage helps to stretch tight muscles and rejuvenate muscle energy. A medical grade massage uses different techniques and modalities than the other two types and is used in a therapeutic session. For extreme deep relaxation, be sure and ask about their Amethyst Bio-Mat which combines far infrared technology, amethyst crystals, and negative ions to provide relaxation and a plethora of health benefits. All clients receive a free 30 minute trial on the Mat and can request an upgrade to be massaged on the Mat! Mercy, Maggie, and the staff work with every client individually to personalize each session. “It’s important to let your therapist know what your needs, expectations, and concerns are so that your therapist can properly treat you,” Mercy said. The spa offers individual sessions or packages. There are no contracts or membership fees and the packages never expire! Their Buy-3Get-1-FREE package gives the client a 25% discount rate per session. Packages can even be shared with friends and family. Need a gift? If you purchase a package and would like to “gift” one of the sessions to a friend, Divine Connections will create a certificate for you that you can pass along. Divine is offering cannabis massages, as well. What is CBD

Cannabis massage? Cannabidiol (CBD) lacks the component that causes psychoactivity. In simple terms, this means that cannabidiol properties will not get you high. CBD is legal in ALL 50 States. Not everyone seeking relief with cannabis wants to smoke or eat it. That is why topical use is a great choice. Cannabis topicals include balms, salves, lotions, and oils that are infused with active cannabinoids and are applied to and absorbed directly through your skin. There have been “numerous reports of topical cannabinoids working wonders for arthritic joints, tender points, muscle spasms, phantom limb pain, peripheral neuropathy and inflammatory skin conditions—and we almost never hear any reports of adverse effects associated with its use.” If you are interested in learning more about cannabis, the benefits and more go to the Divine Connections blog on their main website. Divine Connections offers a highend line of skincare that won’t break your pocketbook. Maggie discovered Elixir of Life at an industry show and was wowed by this luxurious line that offers moisturizing, antioxidant, and anti-aging benefits. If you’re in need of a facial, you’ll find just what you need at Divine Connections with their knowledgeable estheticians. They offer sixty-minute personalized facials for only $90 and have customized correction series packages for all of your skincare needs. Divine Connections Massage & Spa offers a variety of excellent services at affordable prices with superior customer service. To learn more about their services, visit their website at DivineConnectionsMassage.com. They are located at 6052 Van Dyke Road, Lutz. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm and Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Call 813-402-2959 to make your appointment today!

Really Good News! The governor signed into law the permanent expansion of both Bright Futures Scholarships to begin with the incoming classes next fall. About this time of year, I start receiving calls from students and parents about the SAT and ACT requirements to receive these scholarships because they can be worth $18,000 to $24,000 during four years of college. The top scholarship requires a SAT of 1290 or an ACT of 29. The 75% level requires a SAT of 1170 and an ACT of 26. The most common difficulty in a student qualifying is the SAT or ACT score. You have until the last exams of the spring to qualify, meaning the SAT on June 3rd and the ACT on June 10th. Bright Futures will “cherry pick” the best scores from multiple exams of the same type, add together the highest

18

scores in each section, and round up the result to see if a student qualifies. If you want to see if you student can qualify, we still have a little time. More and more students are preferring to prepare for the SAT and the ACT exams over the summer when schedules are not so demanding. The summer ACT Exam is on July 14th, and the summer SAT Exam is on August 25th. Rising seniors can take an exam and see if the score is what they need, or take another one in the fall before submitting college applications. Rising juniors often prepare for the PSAT given in midOctober, which is the only qualifying exam for National Merit Scholars. On occasion I help rising sophomores, such as two current seniors who both are National Merit Finalists (top 1% in nation based on PSAT score) with substantial scholarships. From my last article, you know that a freshman entering Princeton

(the #1 ranked US college) in 2017 would pay over $3,000 less than a freshman entering the University of Florida (#42), and actually less than any residential college in Florida. If a Florida student from a family of four, family income of $100,000, and family assets (excluding home equity) goes to Harvard, again they will pay less than going to the University of Florida. The reason is the high endowments of all top schools. These numbers stay about the same for all Top 25 Schools … the key is being admitted. (Sources: collegescoreboard net costs and Harvard.edu cost calculator) Would you have guessed that Florida ranks as the #7 state for freshmen admitted to Princeton in 2017 with 41 students. The top five were three New England States, California, Pennsylvania, and barely Texas (49 admitted). The key is being admitted. Here’s an idea of how we can help you prepare. (there are more

steps involved, but this will give you an idea): the Common Application is different than applications for major Florida schools, the application Essay(s) must be far superior and sometimes two are required, the Free Application For Student Aid (FASFA - which is required) is critical including how to legitimately minimize assets and income that count against you, pushing the SAT and ACT scores to the very top is a “must” (SAT at or above 1400, ACT at or above 31), maximizing college campus visits including talking with admissions and other key experiences, developing special strengths instead of the standard Florida community activities that do not count, understanding scholarship requirements that can vary widely, building negotiating skills to go after the best value packages that can save $10,000 $40,000 in costs, preparation and practice for the all-important

“personal interview” - so vital because often this “makes or breaks” an otherwise highly qualified student, and plugginginto a local alumni group in advance if possible to build relationships. And my students have been admitted to 8 of the top 10 universities in the country, and 17 of the top 25. If you have an interest in shooting for a “Top 25”, call me so we can discuss our special program further. You can contact me at 727253-0639 or send me an e mail at wwa0811@mykolab.com. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve 200 – 350 points on the Writing, Reading, Writing and Essay, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to eight of the top ten universities in the country, seventeen of the top twenty-five, and many schools in Florida. These schools include Harvard, Yale,

Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Air Force and Merchant Marine Service Academies, Penn State, LSU, Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, FIU, New College of Florida, Stetson, and Julliard – Manhattan - New England - and Berkley Conservatories of Music. Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. This year, he also tutored three juniors who scored at the national merit finalist/semi-finalist levels on the most recent PSAT. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

Tech Talk with Bob: WiFi Part 3 By Bob Dalles Greetings! Last time we talked about Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) using different methods to communicate. The most common Wi-Fi your computer uses today utilizes radio signals. There have been many types of Wi-Fi standards developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The IEEE standard for Wi-Fi radio signals is known as the 802.11 standard. Unless you are a professional computer technician, the three main characteristics of each of the different 802.11 standards you really need to know is: the data transmission speed, the distance or range the signal can travel, and the radio frequency each standard uses. The first standard is 802.11a which transmits at a speed of 54 Megabits Per Second (Mbps); with a range of 150 feet; and uses the 5 Gigahertz (GHz) frequency. The next standard is 802.11b

which transmits at a speed of 11 Mbps; with a range of 300 feet; and uses the 2.4 GHz frequency. Notice the 802.11b standard cut the speed way down from 54Mbps to 11Mbps but it does double the range from 150 feet to 300 feet. These standards are not compatible with each other because 802.11a uses the 5 GHz frequency and 802.11b uses the 2.4 GHz frequency. The next standard is 802.11g which transmits at a speed of 54

Mbps; with a range of 300 feet; and uses the 2.4 GHz frequency. 802.11g gave us the back 54 Mbps speed plus the range of 300 feet. We got the best of both 802.11a and 802.11b. The other great thing about 802.11g is since it uses the 2.4 GHz frequency it is backward compatible with the 802.11b standard which also uses the 2.4 GHz frequency. So if you had computers using 802.11b they could also communicate with 802.11g computers. That way when 802.11g was introduced you could use it with your existing 802.11b computers which gave you the flexibility of upgrading your existing 802.11b equipment to 802.11g when it was financially feasible to do so. Remember, every time a new standard was introduced its price increased. So if you had only a few computers, the cost of upgrading from 802.11b to 802.11g wasn’t too bad. However if you were a small company with dozens or even

hundreds of computers the financial hit to upgrade was pretty substantial. Is your head spinning yet? There are so many acronyms to remember and the details of each standard can be overwhelming. Don’t drive yourself crazy. All you need to remember are the three basic characteristics for each standard: speed, range, and frequency. Next time we will cover more of the 802.11 Wi-Fi standards. Have a tech question? Email it to TechTalkTBNL@BobTheComputerGuy.NET. Questions will be selected by the popularity of a topic and answered in this column. If you have a more urgent need or have a unique situation you may schedule an appointment with one of my Professionally Certified Technicians by calling 727-534-4000. Until next time, stay safe on the internet!

GCS Driving Academy – the Custom Driving Experience By: Tom Bostock

Are our current high school driver’s education programs teaching today’s teenagers enough of the skills required to drive safely and, even more importantly, survive on today’s high speed, limited access highways? For former racing driver, and founder of GCS Driving Academy, George Csanadi, the answer is a resounding NO! There are, unfortunately, alarming statistics to support his contention. Putting his negative viewpoint into perspective, George said “In a parking lot, you might crack a taillight; on I-75 you can get killed!” In Europe, George noted, it takes 75 hours of training by a certified instructor and an intensive 2 -part exam, besides the proficiency test, to get a license. In the US, parents sign that their sixteen-year-old child has had his permit for one year without incident and completed a

minimum of fifty driving hours, ten of which must be at night. The instructor may have been bad driving Uncle Joe who learned to drive on a tractor on a dirt road, forty year ago. It doesn’t matter! According to the Center for Disease Control, statistics from as recently as October 2017 cite, “the risk of motor vehicle crashes is higher among 16-19- year-olds than among any other age group. In fact, in per mile driven, teen drivers, ages 16 to 19, are nearly three times more likely than drivers ages 20 and older, to be in fatal crash.” GCS Driving Academy takes an entirely different approach to developing driving skills for its clients, both teenage and adult; no instructors. No instructors? Yes, no instructors. George defines an instructor as someone who tells the novice driver what to do. He, on the other hand, compares what he does to learning to play tennis. Who do you want to teach you to play tennis and develop the

muscle memory and skills necessary to become a good player, your mother or father who MAY have played in college or someone with the proven expertise to help you develop your game? Of course, you would hire a qualified tennis professional, a coach … and that is what George is, a driving coach.

Do you expect to learn to drive in a car with two steering wheels and a second set of brakes? You’ve come to the wrong place. Is your car like that? Why should you learn on an unfamiliar vehicle in the first place? George teaches his clients to drive whatever they drive at home. If there are three cars available, each will be used as

part of the driver experience. In them, he teaches the techniques and nuances a teenager will need to become a proficient, safe, responsible driver. Think you can just drop your teen off at the academy for his driving lesson and pick him up an hour later? It doesn’t work that way. Parents are an integral part of

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

the learning process at GCS Driving Academy. George says that “95% of all parents accompany their children during the driving lessons,” learning what he does and why. Even before accepting a new teenage client, he encourages the parents to make their teenager a part of the driving school selection process. As unique as the teenage driving experience is, George also caters to adults with powerful, exotic cars and “a need for speed.” Did you purchase a highperformance car to polish and sit in your garage gathering dust or was there an ulterior motive, like driving at over 100 miles an hour on a high-speed race track? You need a controlled environment to safely scratch that “itch.” That is the other niche service offered by the GCS Driving Academy. Using his contacts at major tracks around the country – four of them in Florida – George arranges of his “high speed junkies” to have the experience of a lifetime, driving on a professional race course. Faced with an actual course, some of his clients realize that high-

speed driving isn’t as easy as it looks on television. One of his clients, Brad K, who owned a Mercedes C63 AMG, wanted to learn about his car’s “true potential.” After the first session at Sebring International Raceway, he said, “it is painfully obvious I don’t know how to properly operate my highpowered machine.” George’s coaching solved that dilemma. Another client noted that “I thought I knew how to drive” when confronted with an actual

race course. At the end of the coaching session, he added, “the experience was exhilarating and more fun than should be legal.” So, whether it’s “a need for speed” or a teenager who just starting the driving experience, GCS Driving Academy, boasting 456 satisfied teenage drivers, is here to help. “We had a 14-year-old unit, that by the looks of it had never been serviced in its life. They answered all my questions, even the dumb ones. . . Not only did they install a great system and clean the ducts, but they also put down a new concrete slab, painted inside the air handler closet, cleaned up after themselves and much more. I especially liked that I was emailed every time someone new was coming to my home so I knew exactly who to expect. Their customer service is incredible. I called on a Saturday to the emergency service and was called immediately back and was scheduled for our install within hours. I will be using them again for sure.”
