Tech Talk with Bob: STOP: Before Repairing Your PC

Imagine this. The computer you bought from that big box store seven months ago no longer works. No problem, it’s under warranty. You call the manufacturer for a return authorization. You pack and ship your computer to them. Two months later, you finally get it back. It quickly boots up. However, your desktop doesn’t look the same. Then, you realize some programs are missing, you can’t print, and most importantly, all your pictures, videos, music, and other data is nowhere to be found. Your computer works, but your personal stuff is gone. You call the manufacturer to ask about your data. Suddenly, you get this sinking-feeling as you learn that the only obligation they have is to repair or replace your computer to the way it was the first time you took it out of the box. The manufacturer has no liability when it comes to the stuff you add. You learn the hard way that your missing programs, data, and more are your problem. People find themselves unprepared and in this predicament every day. Hopefully, after reading this, you won’t. Some people view computers no differently than coffee makers or other appliances. Electric coffee

8 JUNE 2022

makers use hardware and software to function. However, your coffee maker’s software is not as sophisticated as your computer’s software. Like the coffee maker, people typically do not differentiate between the hardware and software aspects of a computer system. The truth is, where the software in your coffee maker never changes, the software in your computer constantly changes. Especially as you add and delete music, pictures, and other personal data. Your computer’s hard disk drive (HDD) stores all computer software information including your personal and unique information. This happens over time as you add, delete, and otherwise change programs, printers, data, etc. Each change alters the contents of your HDD. When you send your computer to the manufacturer for repair, your HDD may be physically replaced with a new HDD. It can also be logically replaced by having all the information on the HDD erased and then rewritten with the original information the HDD had on it the day you took it out of the box. Ever had the battery in your car replaced? The first thing you realize is the radio preset stations have been wiped out due to the battery being disconnected. The auto repair shop’s responsibility is not to restore your radio presets but to replace your car’s battery with a working one. You’ll just have to reprogram those stations all over again. The same is true of your computer. Important information can be lost during the repair. Personal data, like rare photos, may be impossible to replace. It is always your responsibility to make sure you have what you need to restore the programs and data you have added to your computer since you bought it. But no one ever tells you this until it’s too late! So, how do you minimize your data

loss when you need your computer system repaired? First, make certain all your personal data is backed up. This can be difficult if your computer will not turn on. If your computer will not turn on, there’s a good chance my team can save your HDD data before you send your computer off for repair. Call me at 727-534-4000 to find out. Next, you’ll need the installation disks and/or downloaded files for any software you added to the computer after you bought it. Make sure you have all your product keys so these items can be reinstalled with as little trouble as possible. You’ll also need a list of your email and website usernames and passwords. You will need to reenter these the first time you try to access any secured websites. If you are not sure you have everything you need, and you would like some help sorting it all out, call me. I’ll help you get all your ducks in a row. An hour or two of prevention will save you so much money and, more importantly, grief if you find yourself in a time-crunch to get your computer back up and running the way you had it before sending it off for repair, or experiencing the distress of a malware attack, or the misery from the inevitable HDD crash. Are you certain your computer is safe? You don’t have to do this alone my friend. My team and I are here to keep your computer safer and keep it running. My team repairs computers and secures them, on our bench, onsite in your home or office, and even remotely. We have the best solutions already in place and we’re only a phone call away. Call us anytime at 727-534-4000. We’ve been helping folks restore their peace of mind, and sanity, with their technology for decades. We Keep You Safer In Your Digital World!

SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: SUMMER PREP CLASSES By Dr. Wayne Adams Wow? Summer break has already started. Before we know it, high schools will be back in session in early August. How time flies, especially over the summer. Upcoming Exams: ACT on Saturday July 16th and Saturday, September 10th; SAT on September 3rd and October 2nd; and PSAT on Wednesday October 15th. More and more students prefer to prepare over the summer. Rising seniors want to see if their scores are high enough for desired colleges and universities (and for Bright Futures), rising juniors want to see how they would score plus preparing for the PSAT in mid-October, and many rising sophomores incorporate preparing for these exams as part of their longer term strategy to be admitted to the best university possible and seek to maximize scholarships. Often when I talk with parents, they ask … Question: “How do you keep my student’s attention for your normal three hour class?” Answer: “That is not the problem. As your student will tell you, the problem is that the time goes by so fast.” Question: “How do you motivate students to do their best?” Answer: “When my students quickly see they can rapidly improve, they motivate themselves to see just how well they can do.” Question: “Do you help students aim for a specific score or score range?”

10 JUNE 2022

Answer: “No, because I believe this adds too much pressure and is counterproductive. Instead, I ask them to do their best with the time and priorities they have … and the score will take care of itself. They also learn how to ‘have fun taking the test’, which sounds like words that should never come together but … as they will learn … really do and can greatly help with their mental outlook and test performance.” Question: “What makes the difference in how different students score?” Answer: “For my students, the factors are the academic preparation when they come to me, test-taking skills, special techniques that greatly help on the exam, how well they are guessing on testday, and ‘curve balls’ (those questions you seldom see but, when you do, you either know how to answer them or you are guessing). We have special preparations for these ‘curve balls’.” Question: “Can you help with other areas of college admissions and costs?” Answer: “Yes, and I have for years. This includes writing outstanding college application essays; key information for the ‘Top 25’ colleges and universities, ‘Five More’, and ‘Top 5’ in Florida; locations of very helpful web sites; and my guide Negotiating with Colleges that has helped my families save $1,000 to $10,000 a year in college costs.” Question: “Do you have anything that can help

my student get off to the best start as a freshman in college?” Answer: “Yes, I have written a book about How To Can Survive and Thrive as a Freshman at a Secular University which I give to every family that has proven very helpful in parents and students preparing for the ‘college experience’ and then the student getting off to the best start. If you would like to talk more with me about your student, please give me a call at 727-253-0639 or send an e mail at wwa0811@mykolab. com. Would be great to talk with you further. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve around 200 points on the revised Writing, Reading, and Math SAT superscore; and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to 5 of the “Top 5”, 8 of the “Top 10” and 18 of the “Top 25” universities in the country, and many more schools in Florida. These

schools include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Naval - Air Force - Merchant Marine Service Academies, Penn State, LSU, Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Palm Beach Atlantic, FIU, New College of Florida, Stetson, and Julliard – Manhattan - New England - and Berkley Conservatories of Music. Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. He has also tutored three students who achieved National Merit Scholar Finalist awards. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

Charles Schwab: Seven ways to help kids learn about money Presented by Dena Petersen When working with families, I often hear parents say they wished they had understood money management sooner in life. Think back to how your journey started with personal finance. Did you learn about money management at home, school, or through trial and error? If we can provide our kids with a solid understanding of money management and teach them the importance of budgeting, investing, and saving, we will be giving them the tools to make better financial decisions when they enter the workforce. Ultimately, it’s up to each of us to make sure we give our kids the knowledge of personal finance that they

16 JUNE 2022

need. Fortunately, there are a number of common-sense ways to pass along good financial habits.

3. Encourage a summer job. A Schwab survey on kids and money shows that when young people have jobs, they are likely to be better savers later in life. You can reinforce the emphasis on savings by making sure your child is saving a bit from every paycheck.

Here are seven tips that can help you teach your kids about money, starting with the steps to take with younger children and progressing through lessons relevant as they move toward adulthood. 1. Give your child an allowance. Earning an allowance can introduce kids to the value of money and making choices for themselves. Start when your child is little and consider tying at least part of the allowance to chores to help instill a work ethic.

2. Emphasize savings. Kids are likely to eventually want something that costs more than what they have in their piggy bank or savings account. That’s your chance to teach them how save and to reinforce the concept of delayed gratification.

4. Introduce them to investing. As kids get older and hopefully have some money accumulated, you may decide to open a custodial brokerage account and let them choose some stocks. It’s generally best to work with an advisor to do this,

For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

as there may be unique tax considerations. 5. Teach them about credit. Consider making your child an authorized user on one of your credit cards. There are practical reasons, such as having the card to use in an emergency. But this is also about teaching them how to borrow and spend responsibly. Require them to pay back every dollar they charge, and make sure they understand the basics such as the difference between a credit and a debit card. 6. Help your child set a budget. When your child is living on their own, during

college or after they graduate, talking them through the process of setting a budget will help them better understand how they are spending their money. 7. Encourage good investing habits. As your child gets older and perhaps has retirement benefits through their job, help them understand their options. When they start putting money into a retirement account, that’s a good time to talk about basic investing principles such as diversification, risk tolerance and staying invested over the long run. Give the kids in your life the tools needed to become financially

independent from the start. When you show them how you achieve your goals through budgeting, saving, and investing it will give them the confidence to do the same. Dena Petersen is a Financial Consultant at Charles Schwab with over 17 years of experience

in 1987, into 1988, where we were both looking for new dance partners. I was professional, and she was in the high amateur ranks. We got together and had a successful tryout for a month and took it to our coaches, who liked it. We then formed a professional partnership. We continued to train and study under our coaches in the U.K. and compete in the European circuit.” In their early twenties, an opportunity arose for Timothy and Michele to embark on a four-and-a-halfyear contract in New York City to work in one of the leading studios in Manhattan. They began competing in the American circuit as well as the European circuit. By the time the couple retired from competitive dance, they had ranked second in the U.S. and eleventh in the world. A professional partnership and friendship turned to love, and the couple married in 1994 and moved to the Tampa Bay area. In 1999, they retired from competing, though continued to travel, doing shows, coaching, judging, and lectures. As they wanted more control over their travel schedule, they decided to open a dance studio on Gunn Highway in Tampa, then settled into their permanent Carrollwood location four years later. From six years old to millennials to business people, retirees, and professionals looking for trainers, Easidance Ballroom caters to ages and all

experience levels. Timothy and Michele take pride that whether learning competitive dance, a choreographed first wedding dance, a dance to feel comfortable on the dance floor, or simply an opportunity to socialize with like-minded dance enthusiasts, everyone is treated like family. Thirty-three five-star Google reviews attest to “top-notch instructors and an atmosphere second to none.” “We teach all levels of dance – people who are wanting to have a new hobby, maybe a date night for some, and competitors. We offer it all at the studio,” he said. “There are so many benefits of dance, not just the joy that brings to people. Some people are dancing for fitness. They come to us and say, ‘I can’t do the treadmill thing and the bike. I love music, and I want your ballroom studio to be my gym.’” Ballroom dancing is as physical as going to the gym; however, less stressful on the joints and muscles. Dancing can also be healing in those who have dementia and has been prescribed as part of therapy. Because Ballroom dancing is mentally challenging as it requires listening and problem-solving, studies have found that this challenge to the mind may prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer’s in older adults. Because ballroom dancing involves precise physical activity, listening to the beats in music, remembering dance steps, and taking a dance partner into account, it is

mentally stimulating. “So many articles have come out proving how it is an effective form of exercise physically and also psychologically. Studies have come out showing how in later years it is successful in keeping seniors’ minds active with the thought of learning to dance, step patterns, and coordination – aside of the physical complements that it has.” Ballroom dancing is not a solo experience. It requires communication and teamwork and helps build friendship bonds and a sense

of community. Much like the owners themselves, romantic relationships have been born from holding hands and consciously listening and responding to the moves of your dance partner. “There’s been many stories how dance changes people’s lives. Maybe someone has lost a loved one, and they’ve been for years set indoors, and they find the courage to go back out again. They walk into the studio, and it opens up a new lease on life both with a new set of friends and family and exercise, and a whole

new social world that wasn’t available to them before.” It isn’t just about the social aspect of dancing; Easidance is recognized as a place that trains champions to reach the highest level of competitive dancing. “We’ve had some students taken from what, we consider, a bronze level, and they’ve gone on to be national champions in the ProAm level, where the student is dancing with their instructor. We train people not just looking at dance as a hobby, but a dynamic sport.” Whether a student is seeking private lessons working one-on-one or in a group setting, Easidance has a class for all interests.

These include Latin-flavored dance classes in Mambo/ Salsa, Rumba, Merengue, Bachata, and Cha Cha, and timeless dance floor classics of Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Bolero, Quickstep, Paso Doble, Jive, Foxtrot, East Coast Swing, Country Two Step, Line Dances, and Hustle. Timothy and Michele also host weekly social dances. The couple finds joy in witnesses firsthand the transformation of someone learning to love to dance. Timothy relayed a story of how a young woman came to the studio and sat in her car in the parking lot numerous times before finally taking a deep breath, braving walking through the doors, and learning to gain selfconfidence through dance. With over two decades of touching lives, Timothy explained that there were many similar stories of introverted teens, adults, and senior citizens that came out of their shells and blossomed through the social community of dance. They discover self-confidence, grace, and poise, and the

ability to communicate with others. Easidance Ballroom’s mission is to create a safe, nonjudgmental place where anyone – no matter what the level of experience – can have a fun time learning to dance. “We’ve three options: private, group, and social dances. Typically, students embark on all three. We hear stories from couples, ‘we go out to a lovely meal, and we sit there and watch other people dance. We don’t want

to be the person anymore. Help us.’ It’s our goal to help them feel more confident on the dance floor.” Easidance Ballroom is located at 5111 Ehrlich Road, Suite 140. Fortyminute private lessons are available weekdays daily, morning, afternoon, and evening. Group lessons are Monday through and Friday. Social dances are Friday evenings.
