Bridging the Education Gap with KnowledgePoints Tutoring By Tom Bostock Children learn at their own individual pace. Unfortunately, today’s education system is designed to teach the “average” student at a standardized one. Children who learn at different rates often get left behind, become frustrated, and may even act out in class. As an unknown educator wrote, “Childhood is not a race to see how quickly a child can read, write and count. Childhood is a small window of time to learn and develop at the pace which is right for each individual child.” It is within

that “small window of time” that a child develops the learning habits that will last a lifetime. What do you, as a parent, do in a climate of overcrowded, underfunded public schools and overworked, underpaid teachers who don’t have the time to provide individual student attention? There is a way to help your child overcome learning obstacles not addressed, or even created by regular school; a way to stimulate their imagination. Bleakley Bavol Denman & Grace Settles into 2020 By Deborah Bostock-Kelley

The stress relief is evident. “In 2020, we’re back to business,” said Robert W. Bleakley, managing partner of Bleakley Bavol Denman and Grace. No longer renovating the 28,000 square foot behemoth building nestled among dozens of 100-year-old grand oaks, a quiet pond, and beautiful lake, the BBDG lawyers are settled in and ready to do what their 5-star rating shows they do best – advising clients, preparing litigation strategies, closing business transactions, drafting estate plans, and protecting the interests of its national and local clients. This is not a typical big law firm setting, and BBDG is not your average big law firm.

First of all, I hope you and your loved ones are staying safe. Before I get sidetracked and start rambling about the beaches not closing sooner and the toilet paper hoarding situation, I will go straight to the point. The Tampa Bay community needs you; it needs all of us. In my previous Editorial, I coincidentally talked about supporting local businesses and what an incredible role they played in fostering our local economy, keeping money close to home, and supporting neighborhoods and communities. Small businesses employ about 47 percent of private-sector workers in the U.S., meaning nearly 60 million individuals depend on them to support themselves and their families. These businesses range from your local, independent restaurant to the self-employed accountant. The global pandemic caused by the Coronavirus has negatively impacted hundreds of thousands of independent local businesses all over the state of Florida, and Tampa Bay has been particularly affected. The rapid spread of CoronavirusCoronavirus (COVID-19) has led to specific critical social-distancing measures that are keeping people homebound and avoiding unnecessary shopping trips and social gatherings in order to “flatten the curve.” While those efforts are incredibly important for the greater good, these sudden changes in consumer behavior have had a devastating impact on local businesses, particularly restaurants and bars. Local Tampa Bay Yelp data shows in a recent “impact report” that over the past week, U.S. consumer interest for

restaurants has fallen by 54%, and for nightlife businesses including local bars by 70%. Many of these local bars and restaurant owners, staff and workers, are our friends, our relatives, our very own neighbors. And they are all struggling. We must support them now more than ever. How You Can Help Continue to shop local! Follow your favorite local businesses, bars, and restaurants on social media. A lot of them have been busy adapting to this unprecedented crisis. Some of your favorite local eateries have launched new take out menus and even FREE delivery options. Many of them use apps like UberEats, DoorDash, and GrubHub. Many of these apps are even waving delivery fees to support local restaurants. Enjoy some of your favorite foods in the comfort of your own safe home. To get through this challenging and uncertain time, we all must come together as a stable and supportive community. Let’s all do our part to help lift those local businesses that were hit the hardest by the impact of this pandemic. The Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles team has always been committed to supporting small local businesses and will continue to its part while respecting the social-distancing regulations. “Give, and it will be given to you.” Luke 6:38. Stay safe, everyone, until next month!

As you know, the Coronavirus (COVID19) pandemic is a constantly evolving situation. We want to assure you we are following situation closely to stay informed and keep you safe. Here are some things we are doing to keep everyone safe: 1. We are screening patients over the phone prior to every visit by asking patients if the have any upper or lower respiratory symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache, etc). If they have any of these symptoms or have been exposed to anyone with these symptoms, we are asking them to avoid coming into the office at this time. These patients are being scheduled for Televisits to avoid getting others sick. 2. In addition to our routine cleaning procedures, we have increased the frequency of our cleaning schedule to ensure everything patients come into contact with is disinfected. 3. We have expanded our waiting room and removed chairs to comply with social distancing recommendations given by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). 4. We are asking all patients to schedule Televisits unless it is

8 APRIL 2020

medically necessary (as determined by our providers) for them to come into the office for evaluation. These patients are also being asked to come alone to the appointments unless it is absolutely medically necessary for the patient to be accompanied and assisted. 5. If you must come into the office for an appointment please bring your own pen and magazine to avoid potential transmission of the Coronavirus.

We offer two options for Televisits: A subscription basis which starts at $10 per person per month and on an as needed basis. Please call the office for details on each option. You can rest assured that we are doing everything we can for our patients and the community, online and in person. In the office or online we are here for you! Precautions YOU should take: • Stay at home if you are sick or have been exposed to someone who

is sick and restrict contact with other people. • Even at home, remain at least six feet away from other people while you are sick. • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands. • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth especially with unwashed hands. • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. • The CDC continues to recommend against the use of face masks for people who do not have symptoms.

we are announcing and debuting our subscription service for only $10 per month for existing patients. If you are not a patient there is more reason than ever to join! If the subscription service is not an option for you please feel free to use the Televisit service on an as needed basis. Check out our Facebook page and our website for Televisit instructions. Tech Talk with Bob: Corona Virus Attacks Computers By Bob Dalles Yes, it’s true. COVID-19, the Coronavirus Outbreak, can attack computers. But not in a way you might be thinking. Leave it to society’s lowest form of dirtbags to take advantage of people when they are at their most vulnerable. The Coronavirus Pandemic has given cyber criminals yet another platform in which they can snatch your money and contaminate your computer with dangerous malware leaving it in a precarious state. My friends, I urge you to be on the lookout for these cyber scams. It is not my intent to frighten you but rather to make you more vigilant and aware of steps you can take to protect yourself and the people you care about. The COVID-19 outbreak will certainly increase cyber criminals’ email phishing campaigns in the coming months. As you spend more time at home you will probably be spending more time online. While online, please, please, please, be wary of any links you click. There may be coronavirus computer attacks poised for attack in your email’s inbox right now. It’s just a matter of whether you will click the link or delete the email. I’ll bet you are getting emails from many of the companies you deal with in regard to how they are reacting to this pandemic. Especially watch out for the emails you may receive from companies you DO NOT do business with. If you get an email from a bank you have never done business with, beware. Why would they send you an

12 APRIL 2020

email? You may also be getting emails from helpful friends and family that may include links to news stories, medical information and so forth. Emails made to look like they come from credible companies, organizations, and other familiar entities can be spoofed (faked) to look like they came from a trusted source. Embedded in these phishing emails might be links offering to connect you to another website with more information. Please think twice before you click that link. If for any reason you are not sure you can trust the link, then do not click it. You should always type in the website address yourself instead of using a convenient link that looks legit but may be programmed to attack you. Don’t believe any unsolicited emails you receive from the IRS or the U.S. Treasury. At the time I am writing this, congress is trying to figure out how to get money to people. This makes a perfect opportunity for cyber criminals. Do not

engage in any activity online or on the phone until you are completely confident you are dealing with a legitimate source. Here are some sources you might find helpful: Coronavirus.gov ---- www.CDC.gov ----- www. HHS.gov ----- www.flhealth. gov ----- www.Tgh.org/ virtual-care The Florida Department of Health has a COVID-19 Hotline at 1-866-779-6121. If you are having health issues or symptoms regarding the coronavirus, please call your doctor. If your computer is having symptoms or you are unsure

of its security, safety, or health, please call me at 727534-4000. We are still open for business. We have the ability to provide support without needing to send an IT Specialist out to your home or office. We can remotely access your computer to perform most repairs. We can also remotely perform complete scans for viruses and other malware issues. So if you think you have malware, we can scan for it remotely from our location to yours. So, during a selfquarantine, we can still provide technical support to you over your phone and internet connection. Cyber criminals will exploit the easy victims and unprotected systems. Protecting yourself online is your responsibility. Don’t go it alone. We’re here to help. If you are not sure your system is safe, please have it looked over by a Professionally Certified IT Specialist. Call us now at 727-534-4000. Understanding Autism with Dana Johnson, PhD, MS, OTR/L By Dana Johnson, PhD, MS, OTR/L (with input from autistic advocates) Redefining Autism April is Autism Awareness month and April 2nd was World Autism Day. As an occupational therapist working with those on the autism spectrum, I want to help inform others about some incorrect assumptions and hopefully change the thinking around those with autism. Autism has traditionally been seen as a social and cognitive disorder. However, there is new research that is pointing to autism as a movement disorder. A movement disorder means that some of the behaviors that we typically see in the autistic population are a result of a disruption in the nervous system causing a “disconnect” between the brain and the body. The person understands what is asked, but despite their efforts cannot get their body to do the task. As a result, it appears like they don’t want to do something or don’t understand. By shifting our perceptions of autism from a social and cognitive deficit to redefining it as difficulty with the nervous system, the outlook for these individuals is much brighter. Processing Explained Our brains are constantly taking in outside information from the world around us – visual, sound, textures, and movements. When the brain pathways that help us to understand the sensory information are shutdown or broken, we are not able to do the things we want to do every day. Every single movement we make would be affected by the brain’s difficulty processing incoming sensory information. We would also have a very difficult time learning new skills, not because we don’t understand the goal, but because of the broken or disconnected pathways between the brain and body that make it very hard to do. Here are a few things that you may not know about individuals on the spectrum. Keep in mind that every autistic person is different, and not all may apply.

14 APRIL 2020

What is Apraxia? Many individuals with autism also have apraxia. Apraxia is the inability to have control over our own movements on demand. It affects all movements and our ability to start and stop a movement. Apraxia is a disconnect between the brain and the body. It is not a cognitive or intellectual disability and it can look like many things, including: • Not starting or completing a task • Not being able to speak • Running away and not stopping • Getting stuck doing the same thing over and over Often these behaviors are seen as the individual not wanting to do something or not listening; however, this is not the case. These individuals cannot control their bodies, which is incredibly frustrating for them. What is Dysregulation? Dyregulation happens when we are overloaded with sensory stimuli and/or are experiencing intense emotions, which could be positive (e.g. excited) and negative (e.g. angry).

What could dysregulation look like? • Laughing out of context • Hitting/kicking someone else or themselves • Screaming/yelling • Impulsivity • Running away • Saying “no” What causes dysregulation? Here are some examples from autistic individuals that cause dysregulation for them. • Exhaustion • Excitement • Feeling the pressure to talk • Not being able to get my body to do what I want it to do • Being stuck in a place that’s too loud What can we do to support regulation? • Don’t always assume that they don’t want to do something. Assume that they want to do it, but they need help • Bring your voice down; speak calmly • Give the person a break and then re-

For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

group and try again • Strategies such as breathing, taking a walk, and going to a quiet space can help • Provide an environment that keeps the individual engaged in an activity. Boredom can cause dysregulation Labels and Language Language is extremely important when speaking about autism. It is important to be respectful and empathetic towards individuals with autism. “Violent” – when emotions are running high, the reaction can be misinterpreted as violent. Instead, it is the overflow of emotions that may cause the loss of body control. This is something that autistic individuals cannot control, but we perceive them as unpredictable tantrums that are intentionally directed towards others or themselves. This is incorrect. “Behavior” – We typically see the word ‘behavior’ along with autism and it is always used as a negative term. It’s important that we consider the brain-body

disconnect and that the ‘behavior’ is not always in the control of the person. “Intellectually Disabled” – Individuals with autism typically receive an intellectually delayed diagnosis as well. However, intelligence tests require the use of proficient motor skills and autistic individuals have motor skill challenges (apraxia) so they are unable to accurately demonstrate what they know and because of apraxia, they may demonstrate their abilities in different ways. “High Functioning” or “Low Functioning” – These terms are typically associated with intellectual ability. These terms are also incredibly disrespectful to any human being. Intelligence tests require adequate motor skills and with apraxia, it is impossible to accurately determine an individuals intellectual ability. “Aggressive” – This word is often associated with the autism population. It is assumed that these individuals have control over their bodies and “choose” to

For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

be aggressive. This is not the case. Dysregulation, anxiety and stress can cause them to be much more impulsive. This impulsivity is beyond their control and can cause them to be self-injurious or injurious towards others. By focusing on supporting their regulation and motor coordination, we can help the person have more control over their bodies. Finally, PRESUME COMPETENCE. Presuming competence means that individuals have the ability to learn and understand, and want to learn. It means treating people respectfully and as an equal. Presuming competence is NOT an act of kindness or feeling sorry for the person. Those on the autism spectrum should not have to prove that they are intelligent. Let’s change our thinking and educate ourselves so that we can be supportive of those on the spectrum. Bangkok Sushi - Simply “THAI-RRIFIC” Thai and Sushi - Open For Lunch & Dinner By Daniel Peled If you love fresh Sushi and “Thai-rrific” Thai food, you are going to love this well-known neighborhood favorite that has fans frequenting from all over Tampa Bay. Bangkok Sushi in Lutz delivers an authentic oneof-a-kind dining experience. From the quality of the food to the uniqueness of the ambiance, this place will surely make a regular out of you. The golden statues, exotic teak wood accents, elegant portraits spanning entire lengths of the wall, and the friendly staff in their brightly colored dresses work in unison to create a rich tapestry of authentic Thai atmosphere that envelops you the moment you walk in. In the center of this perfectly decorated restaurant, there’s a modern sushi bar where you can watch the Sushi chefs prepare some of the most delicious and beautiful edible works of art. Bangkok offers the freshest sashimi & sushi with a wide variety of specialty rolls that are guaranteed to please. Tuna, Salmon, Shrimp, Scallops, Eel & more are all on the menu daily. Their sushi rolls not only look amazing but taste incredible. Located also in the middle area, there’s a large and stylish wine rack with an extensive selection of reds and whites. But

18 APRIL 2020

if you’re more into beers, don’t worry, they offer a nice list of domestic and imported brews as well as Thai Beer, which I highly recommend. The dining room provides ample and comfortable seating, with white linen tables beautifully lit, and a classy but relaxed atmosphere. This recently remodeled gem also offers outside seating, perfect for the ultimate Florida date or girls’ night. “I love coming to Bangkok for my monthly mom’s night out,” says Lorraine S. “We all enjoy a couple of shared appetizers and lots of fresh and beautiful sushi rolls. A boatload to be honest! Accompanied by some Sapporo beer. Perfect Moms day out for me.” Since it’s grand opening over ten years ago, Bangkok Sushi has never failed to impress its customers with its incredible ambiance, great food, and helpful staff. Recent customer and regular, Vladimir R., heaps on the praise with this fantastic five star-google review: “Visited this restaurant a few days ago with my wife, who loves sushi. We were in love with the restaurant atmosphere and the hospitality from the staff... My wife, a long time sushi lover, said this was one of the best she had ever had. A had a deep-fried red snapper, and it was also delicious. The presentation was just gorgeous. The quality of the food was top notch. The

service and attention from the waitress were overwhelmingly excellent. We love it so much that we are now recommending this restaurant to all our friends, and we look forward to

coming back for another fantastic experience. If you are within driving distance of this restaurant, I urge you to give it a try; I am sure you won’t be disappointed..” During my first visit, I

had the pleasure of trying the Lobster Roll and the Chicken Pad Thai. The Lobster roll was hands down the most extravagantly presented, yet equally scrumptious, piece of sushi I’ve ever seen. It tasted as phenomenal as it looked. Probably because the head sushi chef is well-renowned among the sushi restaurant industry, his experience stems from since he was a child working his way up in the highest quality Thai hotels. He has industry secret sushi techniques available at his disposal that you’d have a hard time finding at other restaurants. What makes Thai food so appealing are the health qualities it has over competitor’s cuisines. Thai food uses less oil and incorpo-

rates a lot of vegetablebased menu dishes. Thai food is based on the attraction of opposites, spicy curry paste, with sweet, refreshing coconut milk— soft noodles, with the salty crunch of crushed up peanuts, hand-ground on the premises. Your taste buds will come alive with their amazing selection of authentic Thai favorites such as Pad Thai, Crispy Duck, Yum Squid, Volcano Lobster, and Bangkok Combo Fried Rice. Not only is Bangkok Sushi’s menu vastly populated with authentic Thai food and Sushi, but what made me further excited was how customizable all the dishes were, including a range of spice levels that range from the comedic “Coward” to

the authentic ‘Native Thai.” I always stay in the middle. The Chicken Pad Thai had chunks of tender chicken, the noodles were cooked perfectly, the medium spice was the perfect amount of heat, and it had a very creamy feel with a tasty peanut-y crunch. It was equally incredible. With that being said, it’s clear that the owner of Bangkok Sushi strives to deliver the highest quality food and service to every one of his customers. No Meat? No Problem! Choose from the expansive vegetarian options, and just about every dish can be made vegetarian. Regular customer Jason E. from Land O Lakes says, “For years, all I’ve ever ordered was sushi. I would always look to the tables around me with delicious

looking Thai food so I figured I’d give it a shot. Well, I don’t know why I took so long. Absolutely phenomenal and now I have my new favorite Thai snd Sushi place! Wonderful staff and very friendly.” Call Bangkok Sushi today for an updated lunch and dinner schedule and take out and delivery options. Thanks to KnowledgePoints and their tutors, we developed a plan, and it worked! My son’s reading skills not only improved dramatically, but his confidence in reading improved greatly.”

“We took my daughter to KnowledgePoints to improve her ACT scores. Due to high school sports obligations, she was able to take only

half the recommended tutoring time for ACT prep. She was still able to raise her composite ACT scores by 3 points, and her math score improved

significantly. After she first took the test, her tutor adjusted the curriculum to concentrate on the areas that needed the most improvement. She liked the tutors and never complained about spending her Saturday mornings at tutoring. The initial ACT/SAT diagnostic tests and evaluations were very helpful.” ”KnowledgePoints has been a true blessing for my children. It has provided them with a solid foundation academically that they will continue to build upon. I would recommend KnowledgePoints to parents who are seeking enrichment for their children.” These are just 3 of the many success stories, and acknowledgements that are the norm for KnowledgePoints owners, Rocky and Monica Contreras from their students and parents. A graduate of Rollins College, Magna Cum Laude, Rocky worked in the business world as an executive but was dissatisfied, wanting to do something that had more community impact. With his wife, Monica, an award winning elementary school teacher of more than 20 years,

they started their 1st KnowledgePoints 12 years ago in Land O’ Lake and their most recent facility in Trinity 4 years ago. Rocky said that he offers both a “homework help” and a “prescriptive, skills-based” approach to teach the children, depending on what that student needs. “We work very hard to make learning fun,” he said. These incentivized programs involve “success points,” which students earn just by showing up and working hard. These points can be redeemed at “success central,” an inhouse store where students can shop with their points. Younger students can choose toys, puzzles and gifts for immediate gratification, while older ones often accumlate points for rewards like a gift card or other mature gifts. Like the name implies, it gives all ages a sense of success that they may not have experienced before and helps develop positive habits like work ethic and reliability. Rocky points with pride at the results of his prescriptive approach to

learning where students are re-tested every 40 hours and his staff liaze with their students’ classroom teachers. Besides Reading and Math Tutoring as well as a writing program for ages K -12, they also have a Study Skills program and provide preparation for SAT and ACT tests. “BBDG” story

continued from page 1 After spending most of 2019 renovating and moving into its new headquarters in North Tampa and revving up for its annual holiday party with Tampa’s legendary band, the Black Honkey’s playing in its atrium, BBDG lawyers are back into their routines. “The past few years have been a wild ride,” said Robert. “For the past several years, I have spent far too much of my mental energy focused on our space issues. In 2018 we purchased the building, and then in 2019, renovations, planning, moving, and then celebrating dominated the year. Now in 2020, for the first time in about eight years, all I have to think about is practicing law, servicing our clients, and growing our business.” The new facility has enhanced both the work and client experience. Nearly every day, BBDG hosts a mediation in its board room, depositions in one of its two video conferencing rooms with participants sometimes attending from international locations, or a seminar in its atrium. Today, the spectacular entryway boasts a stunning atrium with two colossal stainless steel water features, a circular reception desk, reception seating, tables for meetings,

and a 20-foot screen, in an space large enough to host hundreds of people for parties, corporate training, continuing education, community events, and even weddings and receptions. Robert stresses that it’s not just about hard work at BBDG. The expansive atrium has been used not only for its 200+ person holiday party, but for a super bowl party, fight nights, and seminars. With the launch of the new website bbdgatrium.com, the atrium space can be rented as an event space for significant events. It can comfortably host events for 150 or more guests. Whether a sit-down dinner, live band, or DJ with dancing, the atrium can fit the community needs. “We just had our first inquiry for a wedding,” said Robert. A full-service “AV” rated law firm, the highest possible rating on Martindale Hubbell’s lawyer rating system, with the new location comes expanded capabilities in trusted legal solutions. Whether business or personal legal assistance is needed, BBDG is ready to help their clients with Business and Corporate Law, Commercial Litigation, Construction Litigation, Drug and Medical Device Liability, Estate Planning, Wills and Trust, Family Law, First Amendment, Defamation and Libel, Insurance Defense,

Labor and Employment, Premises Liability, Probate and Guardianship, Product Liability, Professional Liability Defense, Real Estate and Law Use, Trucking, Cargo, and Auto, Workers’ Compensation Defense. The firm’s deep roots are litigation tort defense work for trucking companies, product manufacturers, physicians, long term care facilities, retail stores and malls, medical device companies, etc. “Many of these clients are not located in North Tampa, or even in Florida,” said Robert. “From Tampa, we are blessed to be centrally located in Florida, and for many clients, we cover their litigation needs throughout the entire state. Every day we have lawyers dispatched to represent the client to different counties all around the state.” The fastest-growing aspect of our business is in the commercial and business litigation, construction, business transactions, and estates, trusts, probate, and guardianship areas. In many cases, our role is to educate our clients and give legal advice. Other times we are required to protect our client’s interests forcefully.” In 2020, BBDG is adding two more lawyers to the BBDG team. “We hired two Florida law students who will be starting this summer as soon as they pass the Florida Bar. And we also hired three summer associates – 2 from

the University of Florida and one from the University of Miami Law School. God willing and the creek don’t rise; they will be extended offers and work as associate attorneys starting in the calendar year 2021. We are very excited about the very high quality and work ethic of the newer attorneys that have joined our firm in the past couple of years. That bodes tremendously well for the future of our firm, and also for the quality of families likely to be living and working in our area.”. Robert is excited about the opportunities the new space affords. “After being tightly contained by space issues for the past eight years, it feels like the shackles have been lifted. We are free to explore exciting business opportunities for our firm. We not only obtained precisely the right space and location to grow our business, but we have invested heavily in

equipping this space to ensure our firm is on the cutting edge of technological innovation. That makes it more convenient and efficient for our attorneys and clients to process legal work. We also have loaded these offices with bright, hardworking associates; and have invested in their training and development. We are now well-positioned to seek to become a new home for a lateral attorney or two someone looking for a new home for his/ her family and clients - we’d like to be their home. We have the right blend of personalities, work ethic, legal ethics, and morality, and are seeking similarly minded successful attorneys. “Nearly every day, I come into work and see constant energy. Clients are moving in and out of our board room meeting with our estate planning and business transaction teams, depositions

taking place in our video conference rooms, mediations, trial preparations taking place, new client intakes, and interviews.
