As 2019 starts, many people around the world will be optimistically setting themselves New Year’s resolutions. According to a YouGov poll, the most common aspirations for the coming year in the U.S. are; to eat healthier get more exercise and save more money. Almost one third, perhaps being more realistic, answered that they never bothered with any resolutions. I used to set highly unattainable resolutions every year when I was in my early twenties, but that quickly changed. As I grew older, not being able to keep my highly unrealistic resolutions by February, March or even late January, increased my levels of anxiety and gave me terrible feelings of hopelessness, so I stopped. That does not mean I don’t set short-term and long-term goals for myself anymore; it just means that I stopped making unrealistic resolutions, and I stopped thinking of the New Year as a catalyst for sweeping all my die-hard habits and character traits. I started thinking that every new year we should focus more on reflecting on our past year’s behavior and promise ourselves to make small positive lifestyle changes, that will lead to a healthier and happier life. Often, what we don’t realize is that the problem isn’t that we aren’t capable of sticking to our resolutions— it’s that

we need to do a better job making resolutions that are actually achievable. Otherwise, it’s almost like setting yourself up to fall short. Change is hard, but not impossible. If you want to set yourself up for the best chance of success start by making smaller resolutions. You think: “I am going to get in the best shape of my life, I will not eat junk food ever again, I will work out five times a week, and get a promotion.” All great aspirations, but creating a resolution that is too big sets you up for failure. Are you going to be able to swear off french fries completely? Unlikely. Start by limiting your junk food cravings to only once every couple of weeks would be much more achievable. If you were someone who never worked out before, are you going to go to the gym five times a week? Start with two times, then after a month or two, raise it to three times a week, and so forth. Your body needs time to adjust to a new physical routine, and starting too strong will only cause you to feel overwhelmed, and you’ll be more likely to give up. Reassessing your goals throughout the weeks and months, it takes to get there is essential. We’re also more likely to achieve our resolutions when we make them public. Use social media to let all your close friends and relatives know of your goals and have them hold you accountable. That way it’s harder to back out!

Celebrate small successes. I cannot stress that enough! I always had unrealistic goals about my weight. I would say: “I want to lose 40lbs!” But I would beat myself up for only losing 5. Any weight loss is progress! So don’t feel discouraged. If your focus is just on the endgame, it’s easy to feel hopeless and to want to give up. Rather than waiting until you’ve shed all the weight, give yourself a “Yay, me!” celebration each time you drop 5! Remember that it’s only HUMAN to slip up, as long as you get back on track! Having a lapse is more common than you think. In fact, over 75 percent of resolution makers slop up within the first two months. Some get so upset that they completely give up. But that will not be you! Acknowledge your screw up but get right back on track. Figure out a way of preventing it from happening again. Just whatever you do, don’t give up and believe in yourself! Reaching that goal weight, developing better eating habits, or getting into a regular fitness routine are all healthy lifestyle changes that are worth sticking with for more than just a few months. Those good habits should not have a deadline; they should be a lifelong commitment. Good luck!

Tech Talk with Bob: When to Buy and New Computer? By Bob Dalles I receive emails from readers asking if they need to fix their existing computer or scrap it and buy a new one. This is a difficult question to answer without actually inspecting the computer myself. My goal in this column is to give you things to consider before buying a new system. Some people believe that they need to upgrade their existing system or buy a new system every time Apple or Microsoft releases a new operating system (OS). The OS is the basic software on a computer that allows other programs/apps to function. If you use a word processing program to write letters, the word processor (WP) needs an OS to help the WP save files, print files, etc. Think of the OS as the stage (platform) where the other programs/apps perform. I could make much more money if I advised my clients to

upgrade their OS every time a new one is released. However, I do not advise my clients to jump into a new computer or upgrade their OS unless they need it. My goal is to advise my clients to do what’s best for their current situation. Yes, I want to make money but I want my clients to know that they will get an honest recommendation from me and only advise them to upgrade if they actually need a newer OS. After all, wouldn’t you be happier keeping hundreds of dollars in your pocket instead of spending it on something you really don’t need? So, how do you know if you need a newer OS? If your computer is running Windows 7 should you upgrade to Windows 10? I always say, “do not upgrade unless you have a program/app or piece of hardware (printer, scanner, etc.) that requires the newer OS.” If your computer functions properly

there is no need to upgrade just because a newer OS has been released. One trap users fall into with a newer OS, (by either upgrading their current computer or buying a new system) is that some of their existing hardware or software is not compatible with the newer OS. This is a big issue for those users who are running Windows XP and jump to Windows 10. They sometimes learn that their printer or a program no longer works with

the newer OS. Now they have to spend even more money on a new printer and new program. Yikes! Most hardware/software manufacturers design their products to eventually become functionally obsolete. That is why I always advise my clients to schedule a “pre-purchase consultation” with me so we can determine what an upgrade is really going to cost them. It is money well spent because if we determine that you need to upgrade, you will be more knowledgeable when you walk into a store or shop online. Every client who has done that is happy because they bought what they needed and was not “upsold” to something they didn’t need. Clients who schedule prepurchase consultations typically find that they usually save more money on their new computer purchase than what they paid for the consultation. I’m not saying

that sales people in these stores are looking to take advantage of you, it’s that they don’t know your whole story (since they don’t come to your home or office) to truly determine what best suits you. Some clients have even paid me to accompany them to the store as liaison between them and the sales person. We’ll also browse the internet with you if you prefer to buy online. Some of the emails I receive ask me to recommend a make and model for an upgrade. I will not do that because it is not my intention to endorse or denounce any particular brand publicly in this column. Plus without an onsite pre-purchase consultation it would not be appropriate for me to make a recommendation. However, if we do have a prepurchase consultation we will discuss brands and model numbers that are suitable for your specific needs. Let’s quickly touch on hardware. The main issue with laptop/notebook computers is the battery not holding a

charge anymore and/or getting extremely hot when connected to the power supply. In this is case the battery can be removed to lower the heat produced by the laptop. However, this only works if you plan to keep the computer in one place. If you need mobility then replacing the battery is cheaper than buying a new computer. As long as there are no software issues, most hardware issues can be resolved for less money than a new purchase. Have a tech question? Email it to TechTalk-TBNL@ BobTheComputerGuy.NET. Questions will be selected by the popularity of a topic and answered in this column. If you have a more urgent need or have a unique situation you may schedule an appointment with one of my Professionally Certified Technicians by calling 727-534-4000. Until next time, stay safe on the internet!

SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: 2019 AND THE FUTURE By Dr. Wayne Adams Upcoming Spring Test Dates in 2019: SAT on March 9, May 4, and June 1. ACT on February 9, 2019, April 13, 2019, and June 8, 2019 As 2019 begins, most seniors have taken their last SAT or ACT Exam and submitted to selected colleges and universities along with their final applications. The exception are those who don’t quite have the scores to qualify for the 75% or 100% Bright Futures levels. Here are several key requirements for these scholarships awards: AcademicScholars (100%): Weighted GPA 3.50+, Volunteer Hours 100, SAT 1290/ACT 29. Estimated 4 year value: $26,000+. Medallion Scholars (75%): Weighted GPA 3.00+, Volunteer Hours 75, SAT 1170/ACT 26. Estimated 4 year value: $18,000+.

10 JANUARY 2019

As of this writing, Bright Futures (BF) will “superscore” both the SAT and ACT scores for eligibility. This means that if a student akes an exam multiple times, BF will use the highest scores in each area. One of my students started preparing for the ACT last year as a junior, and her first score was 23. She kept working, and recently got her superscore

up to 25.50. BF rounds up the score at 0.5 and above, so she is now eligible for the Medallion Scholars scholarship. Great determination. Bravo!!! Students also have until the last spring exam for the SAT and ACT to take and submit a score for consideration. The last SAT this year is on Saturday, June 2nd, and the last ACT this year is on Saturday, June 9th.

With the new Bill on the way to the House, double check this eligibility time to make sure it does not change. For juniors, spring exams are very popular. Most have received their PSAT scores back and have an idea where they would score on the full SAT, although often the full exam score is lower because there are more questions in each section and an essay. Juniors also want to see how they will do on a full exam, and whether they can do better on the SAT or the ACT. Usually, my students to about fifteen percentiles higher on one exam or the other. The only difficulty is that we can’t predict which until they take them both. I have had multiple juniors from many different public and private high schools work over this summer and fall, and many scored so high they will not need to retake an exam. Sophomores who prepare

want to see what it is like to take an SAT or ACT exam, and use this time to also prepare for the PSAT which they will take next fall as the qualifying exam for National Merit Scholarships. While these are not huge scholarships, colleges love to have national merit scholars and often reward them with large academic scholarships. Plus they are very helpful in being admitted to top level colleges and universities. If You Would Like To Talk More About Your Student … Please contact me at 727-2530639 or send me an e mail at wwa0811@mykolab.com. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve 200 – 350 points on the Writing, Reading, Writing and Essay, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to eight of the top ten universities in the country, seventeen of the top twentyfive, and many schools in Florida. These schools include Harvard,

Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Service Academies: Navy - Air Force - and Merchant Marine Penn State, LSU, Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, FIU, New College of Florida, Stetson, and Julliard – Manhattan New England - and Berkley Conservatories of Music. Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. This year, he also tutored three juniors who scored at the national merit finalist/semi-finalist levels on the most recent PSAT. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

Start Your New Year Off right at Jazzercize Lutz!

It’s 2019 and this year I’d like to suggest skipping the New Year’s resolutions. Why make plans to start something and then fall off the wagon within three weeks? I always end up feeling like a loser when my resolutions don’t even last a month. What if we just resolved to stay the way we are and make changes as we go along. Little improvements that will add to our quality of life.

1. Dieting vs. Healthy Eating There are so many good programs that teach healthy eating and portion control. Identify what is in your area and check out several so you can learn as you go, have group support and when there is a weekly weigh in, accountability. Weight Watchers has offered a sensible approach that has lasted through the years. MyFitnessPal.com offers an online program where you can track your food and exercise daily, along with seeing friends check in and lose weight. 2. Jazzercise vs. Gym memberships There is a gym on every corner and cardio/spinning classes offered at a variety of locations. Jazzercise offers multiple classes and a month to month payment plan. Why sign a contract to pay for months when you have lost interest and are on to something else? Jazzercise offers many formats to keep every participant excited about coming to class:

14 JANUARY 2019

Dance Mixx-A high intensity dance workout mixing modern moves and strength training, set to top 40 music and target the 3 major muscles groups for a full body workout. Interval-Equal parts circuit-based burst of cardio and strength training, this workout carves your body into the shape you strive for. Fusion-Total body workout is circuit-based High Intensity Interval training class that fuses high-octane dance moves and muscle work to rev up your results. Flip Fusion-Targeted, muscle-carving sets followed by shorter blasts of cardio dance kickstart metabolism to keep calories burning for hours after the workout is over. Core-Cardio plus strength designed to engage and chisel the entire core and target v-line ads for a body to boast about.

Strike-Jabs and kicks to pumping music knock out stress and release your endorphins. Calories don’t stand a chance! Strength-Muscle sculpting class combines weights and resistance training to crate a tight, lean body. 3. Financial Planning vs. Spend it as you go If you are waiting for your check on Friday to pay your bills, chances are you already spend it as you go. Start with baby steps of a savings account and transfer $25 each pay period. It’s probably small enough that you won’t even notice that it’s gone. When you save up a few hundred, visit your bank and see where they can help you make more money. Take the stress our of your new year by starting out with zero pressure

to do this or that. Find little things you can do to create change and stay open minded to new ideas that come your way. Give yourself a break when it comes to your shortcomings. Don’t try to create resolutions or goals that are based on other people’s expectations or social norms that we are expected to achieve. Leave your 2018 baggage behind and find fun and things that add to your quality of life. Start Jazzercise for $0 in January, no joining fee and no first month’s class fees. Normal fees start in February 2019 and vary upon location. We have three locations in the Tampa Bay area, Lutz, South Tampa and Westchase. Go to www. jazzercise.com or call 800348-4748 for class times.

Relief in Trinity is Spelled R-e-L-e-a-f! “Robert, I think we need to take a look at this.” Dr. Leo Vieira, educated at University of Maryland, was talking with his long-time business partner and friend, Dr. Robert Ferreira, referring to medical marijuana. “Some of our patients are looking for alternatives to traditional medicine and I think this is an answer.” Both doctors are boardcertified in Family medicine with accolades such as Chief Resident and Resident of the Year in their residency training. Dr. Robert Ferreira, educated at Michigan State University, was skeptical. He had been in private practice for over 20 years,

20 JANUARY 2019

held a respected position in the Trinity community and had never considered marijuana as an option for his patients. Nowhere in his medical training had marijuana been mentioned as a medicine. Nonetheless, he set out to educate himself about it. After the two doctors had completed over 50 hours of seminars, continuing medical education and on-line courses, they were convinced. Medical marijuana had decades of sound scientific data and a proven track record. Why hasn’t the medical community embraced this medicine that was used in ancient China and during the Roman Empire thousands of years ago and is still being

Dr Ferreira (left) and Dr Vieira (right) used today? Through their education and training, they learned how medical marijuana works in the human body - through the Endocannabinoid system which regulates the balance of all the other

systems in the body, from electrical activity in the brain, the immune system to intestinal function. In fact, every mammal on the planet has this in their bodies - it is part of us and is a part of nature and most

importantly, IT WORKS! November of 2016, the amendment to legalize marijuana passed by a whopping 71% - more than any other amendment in Florida history. Even though the federal government continues to classify marijuana as a schedule I drug (having no medicinal value), a more enlightened Florida electorate passed the amendment. People have pushed passed the stereotype of a long-haired, sandal-clad hippie getting “high” and are pursuing medical marijuana for their suffering. They are in pain, afflicted with crippling diseases such as Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis. These patients do not want to get “high;” they just want relief from their symptoms. Medical marijuana can offer this. After forming their medical marijuana clinic, Trinity ReLeaf, they realized that much misinformation still exists about medical marijuana. It is not “smoking pot.” Smoking burning leaves of any kind has detrimental health effects; doctors are not going to recommend this. To the advantage of the consumer, medical marijuana in the state of Florida is highly regulated. It is a “vertical” process. The seeds are planted in Florida, harvested here. The active compounds are extracted here, and the dispensaries are here also. Every seed is numbered and followed through plant adulthood. Furthermore, dispensaries are required by law to have an independent, third-party lab test

Back row: Dr Ferreira, Ashley, Stacey, Molly, Dr Vieira Front row: Laura, Erica, Guiga Vieira, Jill their products for purity and the absence of harmful chemical like insecticides. Recreational marijuana offers no such assurances. Another benefit is its safety. No one in the history of mankind has ever died from an overdose of marijuana alone. Approximately 128 people die every day in America from opioid overdose (oxycodone, Vicodin, fentanyl, etc.). Medical marijuana is safe and, even if large doses are ingested, no long-lasting detrimental effects are incurred. In the past, marijuana has been categorized as a “gateway” drug to using other drugs. Trinity ReLeaf physicians refute this. “It should be seen as an “exit” drug - a medicine to help people get off harmful medicine like Percocet, Xanax, Valium and Tramadol.” Unfortunately, trying

to wade through the state bureaucratic morass associated with getting a medical marijuana registry card can be daunting. This is where Trinity ReLeaf excels. They are committed to excellent patient service. They walk their patients through the legal system, provide education regarding medical marijuana and even see their patients in their first follow-up visit at no-charge to ensure they are getting the outcomes they desire and provide more guidance, if necessary. In short, they truly care about their patients. Trinity Releaf has several educators on-site who spend the time the patient needs to become comfortable managing their medical marijuana. They screen potential patients and offer a money-back-guarantee on their certifications. What can qualify someone for medical marijuana? The list includes: anxiety, depres-

sion, chronic pain of any type, cancer of any type, insomnia, Crohn’s disease, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Parkinson’s disease, neuropathy, to name a few. How do you get started? Simply go to www. trinityreleaf.com and fill out their brief form and you will be contacted within one business day. Alternatively, a patient can call directly (727-6456900) during normal business hours (8 AM to 5 PM) and many times can be seen within the week, if not the same day. Dr. Ferreira and Dr. Vieira and their caring, professional staff are here to serve you; conveniently located at 2044 Trinity Oaks Boulevard, Suite 220, Trinity, Florida. Debbie Pienkowski, formerly of Dade City was hoping to lose 50 pounds, and succeeded by losing more than 60 pounds. Medi-Weightloss Clinics’ patient Debbie describes her “a-ha” moment, “Getting ready to turn 61, I thought being an attractive woman ever again had passed me by. I was depressed and hated to accept being an old married grandma.” Says Debbie, who has successfully lost over 50lbs with the MediWeightloss program! “I watched a co-worker on the program blossom both physically and mentally and decided I too had to do something. I am a miser when it comes to money but do not regret spending one penny to join the program. I have not been this happy in many, many years. I have lost 51 pounds, feel great and found confidence that I thought was long gone. I laugh again, swing my hips a little and stand tall as an older woman who proves “we are still women to be seen”. I lacked confidence for many years, having been thru abusive relationships in the past. Now I feel I am worthy of being seen, heard and proud of who I am and what I have done for myself. I was told recently that Confidence is Sexy. Well you know what, it sure is!!! My husband of 35 years has been so supportive and brags about his skinny wife. Life is good again.” – Debbie These are just a few of

terms associated with investments and stocks and bonds, like bull and bear market, margins and portfolios, is the responsibility of the financial advisor. In today’s fast-paced, tech-savvy business environment, brokerages come and go but few have stood the test of time, one of them being, Morgan Stanley. I could write several thousand words about the company, its solidarity and stellar reputation in the financial community, but, since a company is only as good as the people who represent it, let’s take a peek behind the curtain and get to know one of the local members of Morgan Stanley’s Tampa team, Brent Hulling, on a more personal level. Brent is a First Vice President, Financial Advisor in the downtown Tampa office of Morgan Stanley, located at 100 Tampa St, Suite 3000. A native

of Tampa, Florida, he graduated from Chamberlain High School and later, the University of South Florida, with a degree in Organizational Communication. Although his original interest lay in a tech-related field, his fortuitous choice of this unusual major has helped him to communicate more effectively with clients from every walk of life in his Morgan Stanley financial practice. Brent credits his father with his entrepreneurial spirit. His dad was a restaurateur who currently sells businesses. Brent started with T. Rowe Price in 2004 and after almost 5 years, decided to try his hand at insurance, selling property and casualty products. After a year in the insurance business, Brent realized his real passion lay in financial services and in 2010, he began his successful career with Morgan Stanley. Despite his original desire to work in

Brent Hulling and family some, computer-related capacity and his brief stint in insurance, Brent said he realized that “I really love finance and I love going

to work every day;” the rest, as they say, is history. Brent is a member of Kingdom Advisors and has dedicated

his practice to bringing a Christian-based biblical worldview of honest, open relations to his financial planning. Without pressure, Brent incorporates biblical wisdom into the recommendations that he makes. Brent enjoys working fairly and respectfully dealing with clients and perspective clients of every ethnicity and faith; he invites all comers to experience his timely professional financial counseling services. “This,” Brent says, “is who I am. With me, it’s all about building relationships,” Brent said, “not just navigating the financial markets.” He counsels what he calls “a disciplined approach” to investing, teaching his clients to “invest with their heads, not just their hearts.” Brent offers “total wealth management,” not just stocks and bonds. Brent is a devoted family man, happily married to his beautiful bride of 14 years. A proud papa, Brent reminisced about his

wife announcing, in 2010, that she was pregnant … with twins! The boys, now 8-years old, are active in sports. One of his sons plays baseball in the Lutz Little League; Brent, of course, coaches the team. In case you were wondering, there’s not a lot of chance that Brent will be joining the PGA anytime soon; he admits he’s a duffer just like most of us and especially enjoys playing the Lake Jovita course. Brent summarized his golfing prowess in 11 words: “I play to enjoy it, not because I’m good at it!” I’m sure we can all relate to that. He also enjoys supporting our local sports franchises, the Bucs, Lightning, Rays and is a season ticket holder for his alma mater, USF Football. Brent and his family are mainstays in the local community. His wife has been a teacher at Oakstead Elementary School since 2007. He is especially proud of his membership on the board of the Tampa Sports Club Founda-

tion, a philanthropic organization that provides money to local youth teams in need of funds. Their charity dinner with local sports figures and community leaders and the Tampa Sports Hall of Fame are well respected in the Tampa Bay area. He also volunteers his time with Feeding America and Lowry Park Zoo. Brent is especially proud of his support, both privately and through his church, of the Dream Center of Tampa Bay in Ybor City, offering enhanced family mentoring, after-school care, computer access & homework help, and athletic programs. Brent is a husband, father, charitable, family and faith oriented financial advisor. For further information, call him directly at 813 227-2170.
