Nelson Dentistry offers state of the art dental care in your own back yard

Dr. Nelson describes his practice, Nelson Dentistry, as being “relationship based.” What that means is that his team gets to know every patient as an individual, not just a set of teeth. This philosophy has enabled the practice to stand the test of time as it has been serving the community for the past thirty years. Dr. Nelson is a graduate of University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, and achieved fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry and the Institute of Advanced Laser Dentistry. In order to bring the latest advances in dentistry to

his patients, Dr. Nelson is a firm believer in continuing education. He has attended the Pankey Institute, The Center for Advanced Dental Study, and the Orofacial Pain Clinic at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Nelson is triple board certified in dental sleep medicine and his practice was the first in Florida to receive an Accredited Facility designation from the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Because of his knowledge and experience, he has appeared on several local television stations to discuss new advances in dentistry.

Go Gold This September - Help Bring Awareness to Childhood Cancer September is here and I am still in disbelief. A lot of stores have Halloween and Christmas decorations out on display already, can you believe it? Whether time goes by slowly or incredibly fast for you, for those diagnosed with cancer every new day is a gift. Families, caregivers, charities and research groups across the United States observe September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In the U.S. alone. approximately 16,000 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer every year; and 1/4 of them will not survive the disease. A diagnosis turns the lives of the entire family upside down. The objective of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is to put a spotlight on the types of cancer that largely affect children, survivorship issues, and -importantlyto help raise funds for research and family support. No matter how what you can contribute, a little does a lot. You can donate online by visiting the following trusted organizations:

National Pediatric Cancer Foundation: https://nationalpcf.org/ American Childhood Cancer Organization https://www.acco.org Children’s Cancer Research Fund childrenscancer.org. Children’s Cancer Center: http:// childrenscancercenter. org/ All donations to these charities are tax deductible since they have all been designated as a 501(c)(3) organization by the IRS. On these websites you can also learn about each organization, read stories from current patients battling cancer, share your own story, or even start a fundraiser. Another way to show your support during the month of September is by wearing gold all month long in your community. Gold is the national color for childhood cancer awareness. Unlike other cancer awareness ribbons, which focus on a singular type of cancer, the gold ribbon is a symbol for all forms of cancer affecting children and adolescents. You can make a safe Gold Ribbon, gold bracelet, gold earrings, charms, etc. purchase online from

a local Tampa company called Fundraising For A Cause: https://www. fundraisingforacause. com/ A lot of the orders ship the same day if placed by 3:00pm. EST. I would also like to take this opportunity to invite all of you to the 8th Annual Cheval Cares 5k Run/Walk event held by the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation, and presented by Tampa Bay Insurance Partners, The Arndt Family, and JK Cancer Fund, Inc. The Even will be held on Saturday, September 28th at the Cheval Athletic Club and will feature a fundraising 5k through the Cheval neighborhood, followed by a family celebration at the playground and basketball court. Registration fees apply so please visit: https:// secure.qgiv.com/ event/cheval/ for more information and to register for the event. Your registration fee includes an event T-shirt, a spot in the 5k run/ walk, and admission to all the family fun areas. There will be live music, a bounce hose, food trucks, a silent auction and more. I will be attending the Cheval 5k with my family, and I hope to see all of your smiling faces there as well! Tech Talk with Bob: Another Phish Tale!

Phishing (pronounced “fishing”) is one of the many ways cyber criminals can attack you. It is the most popular strategy used by criminals to trick you into voluntarily handing them your personal data, your sensitive information, and sometimes your cash. In this type of attack, the criminal will attempt to extort cash from unwitting people by sending an email threatening to publicly humiliate the email recipient. Here’s an excerpt of one that ended up in my inbox just the other day. “Hello! I am a hacker who has access to your operating system. I also have full access to your account. I’ve been watching you for a few months now. The fact is that you were infected with malware through an adult site that you visited. If you are not familiar

8 SEPTEMBER 2019

with this, I will explain.

Trojan Virus gives me full access and control over a computer or other device. This means that I can see everything on your screen, turn on the camera and microphone, but you do not know about it.” The email continues. “I also have access to all your contacts and all your correspondence. Why your antivirus did not detect malware? Answer: My malware uses the driver, I update its signatures every 4 hours so that your antivirus is silent.” The email then threatens to release alleged videos of the recipient to all of the recipient’s contacts. “With one click of the mouse, I can send this video to all your emails and contacts on social

networks. I can also post access to all your e-mail correspondence and messengers that you use.”

Then they go in for the kill. “If you want to prevent this, transfer the amount of $500 to my bitcoin address. After receiving the payment, I will delete the video and you will never hear from me again. I give you 50 hours (more than 2 days) to pay. I have a notice reading this letter, and the timer will work when you see this letter. If I find that you have shared this message with someone else, the video will be immediately distributed. Best regards!” This social engineering technique has swindled cash from some recipients who received this email or one similar to it. Multiple versions of this email are circulating the internet. So, what do you do if one of these

emails ends up in your inbox? Immediately delete it. There really is no way to avoid these emails. Even if you use spam filters some will find their way through. Your best defense is internet safety awareness. As for this phish tale, you’ll be the smart one who got away because you didn’t take the bait. Be Safer Out There!

Caregivers Helping Hand Inc. Gives Baby Shower to Hillsborough County Moms-to-Be on Public Assistance

By Deborah Bostock-Kelley

Sometimes it takes but a single act of compassion to begin a domino effect that lasts a lifetime. In the 90s, Richedean HillsAckbar was a single mother and was given two baby showers by people wanting to help her in her time of need. She was so impacted by that kindness that she decided to assist other mothers on public assistance. In 2009, the inaugural “Annual Day of Pampering for MomsTo-Be” was birthed and now 10 years later, Richedean and volunteers from the community have touched the lives of 5000 expectant mommies through her nonprofit organization, Caregiver’s Helping Hand, Inc. From 10am to 2pm on Saturday, October 12, the nonprofit is pampering expectant mothers during its “Annual Day of Pampering for Moms-To-Be.” Hosted at New Mt. Zion MB

12 SEPTEMBER 2019

Church and sponsored by Rebein Brothers Trail Lawyers, BJ’S Restaurants, Inc., The Wellements Family, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Sunshine Health, this special event, open to all Hillsborough County moms-to-be on public assistance, is celebrating a decade providing community baby showers. This year, Richdean expects over 250 women to attend the zoo-themed event. The event is also open to siblings with a Kids Zone bounce house and face-painting provided for them. Dads-to-be and Grandmas-to-be are also on the guest list. With horror stories in the news of infant abuse, Richedean provides this resource to help new inexperienced mothers learn now how to prepare for the responsibility of a newborn. As several new mothers don’t have a support network to rely upon and it is easy to become

overwhelmed, Richedean brings in community speakers to help train and prepare the young mothers for the stress of having an infant. Richedean also advocates to leave a violent situation and to not leave a child with someone that could potentially harm the child. She wants to give young mothers a sense of independence. Something that may come easy for others – like balancing a budget – may be difficult for a mother without experience. New mothers dealing with financial hardship don’t necessarily know how to budget for buying diapers, or formula, if not breastfeeding. “They often don’t know how to handle this new responsibility and I actually form a budget so that they can balance it,” she said. “I have someone coming to show them how to make baby

food, and someone to show them how to budget their money.” With vendors including Hillsborough County Children’s Board, Healthy Start Coalition, Warriors for Autism, Tampa Family Health Centers, Sunshine Health Plans and Molina Health Care, expectant moms will also enjoy complimentary food, baby

shower cake, gifts and training classes in financial management, couponing, care and child safety for new parents and special classes for the dads sponsored by REACHUP. “The shower will include resources to different agencies that support parents and items new parents may need like book bags for the Dads filled with items needed for an outing like

diapers, wipes, blankets, bottles and change of clothing,” said Richedean. “Mom Care, Reachup Incorporated, and Children’s Board of Hillsborough County have been supporting this event for 10 years and are just a few of the companies supporting us.” Marilyn Westropp, Dr.Tracey Crocker, “The Job Coach” Margaret Debellotte, Dr.Romona Burrowes, and Pastor Laytecia

McKinney will provide inspirational speaking for the expectant parents. Pictures and belly painting, as well as massages by Bless These Hands round out the event to ensure expectant moms will receive a very special day of spoiling. “We are trying to give momsto-be a good start to parenting their newborns by showing a little kindness in their time of need,” she said. “Someone once gave to me. I’m just giving back.” In addition to all the free services and gifts, Richedean herself creates diaper cakes filled with useful baby items which are raffled off for several of the lucky moms-to-be. When asked what the most gratifying comment she’s heard from her guests over the last decade as the event and nonprofit founder, Richedean

answered simply. “Thank you.” Caregiver’s Helping Hand, Inc. accepts gently used and new items for newborns, babies, and toddlers. Items needed include newborn diapers, baby bags, pacifiers, socks, blankets, hats, t-shirts, headbands, rattles, bottles, teething toys, strollers, mobiles, baby wipes, lotion, shampoo, powder, crib sheets, baby swings, baby monitors, and bottle warmers, etc. The “10th Annual Day of Pamper” is Saturday, October 8 at 10am-2pm at New Mt. Zion MB Church, 2511 E. Columbus Dr., Tampa. Guests can register on EventBrite at momstobe2019.eventbrite.com or text 813.431.1814. “Dr. Nelson” - Story continued from page 1 Let Dr. Nelson give you a good nights’ sleep While some patients lose sleep over going to the dentist, Dr. Nelson can actually bring sleep back into your life with the latest technology in dental devices aimed at tackling the problem of sleep apnea and snoring. Did you know that a lack of sleep could lead to serious health issues? Continued lack of sleep over time has been associated with depression, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and more. The original and most common device used to treat sleep apnea is the CPAP, Continuous Positive Air Pressure, device. This machine pumps air into the patient’s nose or mouth as they sleep. Some patients find this device uncomfortable

16 SEPTEMBER 2019

and therefore discontinue use. Dr. Nelson offers an alternative to the CPAP; several alternatives actually. Patients have a choice of several devices such as the Prosomnus Micr02™, Panthera D-DAD™ or the Herbst device. These lightweight devices are a lot less bulky than the CPAP, don’t require a mask and are custom fitted for individual patients. They are designed to position the tongue and jaw in a way that keeps the airway open during sleep, allowing the patient a better restful sleep. They look similar to a mouth guard or retainer and are easily inserted and removed. They are also much more convenient to travel with than the traditional CPAP machine. And there is more great news about these incredible devices! Yes, they’re covered by medical insurance and the team at Nelson Dentistry will submit the claims to your insurance company or

Medicare for you.

Are you a candidate?

To help determine if you are at risk for sleep apnea, Dr. Nelson uses the STOPBANG assessment to screen patients prior to their first visit. The top eight indicators that patients suffer from with sleep apnea are snoring, tiredness, observation pressure-body mass, age, neck size and gender. These indicators make up the acronym STOP-BANG. This assessment consists of eight simple questions. For example, do you snore loud enough to be heard through closed doors? Has anyone observed you stop breathing or gasping for air during your sleep? Are you being treated for high blood pressure? To take this assessment yourself, visit www.sleepbetterflorida.com. Upon completion, patients will be contacted within 24 hours to review answers.

A stress free dental appointment Are you nervous about visiting the dentist to address your dental needs? Don’t stress about it! Dr. Nelson and his team are equipped to make you feel right at home during your dental appointment. Patients can enjoy music and movies while wearing personal headphones. Pillows and blankets are also available for patient comfort. If this isn’t enough to relax you, Dr. Nelson might recommend relaxation dentistry for nervous patients. A combination of oral medication and nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, will induce a deep relaxation for patients. Time will go by very quickly and the patient will remember very little of the procedure or treatment administered. Patients receiving relaxation dentistry methods are still able to respond to commands but because the

For Advertising Info 813-928-6124 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

effects may linger beyond the time it takes for dental treatment, they must be driven from the office by a friend or relative. Dr. Nelson and his team will work with patients individually to determine the best methods for relaxation. Enhance your image with a smile makeover Through cosmetic dentistry, Dr. Nelson can transpose your grin into a spectacular smile! With veneers, which are made from thin shells of porcelain, patients enjoy customized smiles in just two appointments! Veneers are stain free and look just like natural teeth. Dr. Nelson also offers DURAthins as an alternative to traditional veneers. These are adhered directly to the front of the tooth and do not require as much reduction of enamel. Dr. Nelson can help you determine the best choice for you.

Nelson Dentistry also offers teeth whitening to make your smile sparkle, clear aligners, for patients who do not want to suffer the inconvenience of traditional metal braces and an incredible technique called Six Month Smiles. Six Month Smile braces are clear brackets and wires that are the color of your teeth. This technique uses low force to move only the teeth that show when you smile. This is a great product for adult patients who do not want to wear braces for two years! Call today to get started on getting better sleep or improving your smile! Nelson Dentistry is located at 1928 Highland Oaks Boulevard. Visit their website at www. drjaynelson.com or www. sleepbetterflorida.com. For appointments, call 813-9490424.

5 Tips for Creating a Financial Plan

Presented By Justin M. Cole, CFP® French writer, aristocrat, and pioneering aviator, Antoine De Saint-Exupery is quoted as saying “a goal without a plan is just a wish.” Many of us have goals, but what really turns those goals into realities is having a plan in place. This is true as loving parents, as driven business owners, as inspired community advocates, or even as stewards of our physical or financial health.

22 SEPTEMBER 2019

According to recent Schwab research, those who put pen to paper with written financial plans are more confident, more engaged with their wealth and demonstrate more positive saving and investing behaviors. Of course merely having a financial plan doesn’t cut it. It needs to be complete, realistic and actionable. At Schwab, we believe there are five key factors to consider as you unite your financial lives: 1. Create a list of goals that that include how much you’ll need and a deadline. If you write down your goals, you’re more likely to achieve them. Think of them as a road map to where you want to go—and make them practical and attainable. Here’s a simple two-step approach: Step 1: Divide your goals into three categories: short term (less than one year); medium term (one to five years) and long term

(more than five years). Step 2: Attach a dollar amount to each goal. For instance, a short-term goal might be your wedding or honeymoon. How much will it cost? The more specific you can be, the more motivated you’ll be to work toward that goal. 2. Review your current situation. Total up the amount of money you have already accumulated toward each of your goals and how it is being invested. Be sure that your allocation between stocks, bonds and cash investments is appropriate to help reach your short-term and long-term financial goals. Also consider your investment vehicles. Make use of tax-advantaged accounts for retirement savings. But avoid tapping those for non-retirement purposes, like the down payment on a home. Instead, use taxable accounts for these types of major purchase goals.

3. Make assumptions about your future. For longer-term goals like retirement, consider how much you’ll be contributing towards each of your goals over time. You may decide to include your partner in this plan or plan for each separately depending on your financial arrangement. The earlier you start saving, the less you’ll have to set aside each year. If you start saving in your 20s, 10% of your salary before taxes each year is a good goal. If you wait until your 30s, that number needs to bump up to 15%. Wait until your 40s, and you may have to put away 30-35% each year. No matter when you begin, the important thing is to stay on course. 4. Assess your risk tolerance. Evaluate the amount of risk you’re willing to stomach with your investments to help inform how you should allocate your portfolio between stocks, bond

For Advertising Info 813-928-6124 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

and cash investments. This is key to staying the course toward your goals during the inevitable ups and downs in the market. Your willingness to take on risk will and should vary depending on your various savings goals. For example, if you’re nearing or entering retirement, you probably don’t want to risk significant losses in your portfolio. Rather, you might be aiming to grow the value of your investments but also have current income needs and want relative stability. Just as an example, for those types of needs, Schwab’s moderately conservative model portfolio has 40 percent allocated to equities, 50 percent in fixed income and 10 percent in cash or cash investments. A more long-term goal may allow you to be a bit more aggressive in your allocation, but always stay diversified. 5. Analyze return expectations. Based on your risk tolerance, a sound investment plan contains some sort of expectation regarding the portfolio returns. These return expectations

aren’t year-by-year forecasts, but represent long-term averages used in the planning process. It’s important to stay realistic. If your return estimates are too optimistic, you run the risk of not being able to retire on time or pay for a child’s education. If they’re too pessimistic, you may needlessly sacrifice some of your current lifestyle. To reap the most reward from your investments, try to avoid unnecessary fees and taxes. In today’s environment, there are many planning themes that are important to clients. With the runway to retirement getting shorter, education costs on the rise, and an aging demographic, it is no surprise that our team at the Citrus Park Independent Branch of Charles Schwab observes retirement planning, education planning, and estate planning as primary focuses of our local community. No matter what your goals or planning focus, invest your time in the process of establishing a plan and aligning you actions to your

goals. Your future-self will thank you! Justin M. Cole is an Independent Branch Leader at the Charles Schwab branch in Citrus Park. He has over 20 years of experience helping clients achieve their financial goals. Phoenix Power Systems: Back-up Plan for a Life Un-interrupted

By: Kelly Stuart Williams

Have you been committed to taking that long overdue, “grand” vacation, but you didn’t feel you could leave home, knowing that Florida’s storm season is upon us? With daily brown-outs and multiple days of electrical outages during a tropical storm or hurricane, we know that we can lose everything in our freezers and refrigerators if we are without electricity for an extended period of time. Phoenix Power Systems has a back-up plan for that! Located at 6304 Benjamin Road in Tampa, Phoenix Power Systems is a Briggs & Stratton® dealer that features standby generator monitoring by InfoHub™: technology that allows you and your service provider to constantly monitor your generator by logging

28 SEPTEMBER 2019

in to your mobile device or retrieving text messages and/or e-mail alerts. It’s affordable, and monthly or yearly subscriptions are available, so pricing is reasonable for families and small businesses.

To further help with preventing a power outage, InfoHub™ can be programmed to provide generator maintenance or service reminders. Many clients prefer to have those generator maintenance alerts sent directly to Phoenix Power Systems, their servicing dealer, for ongoing monitoring, a quick repair, and troubleshooting. When installing your Briggs & Stratton® generator,

InfoHub™ can be included as part of your installation so that when the generator’s status changes, you and/or your service provider receives an alert to your e-mail or phone. “It lets you be in control of your standby generator no matter where you go.” A recent call to Phoenix Power Systems related the following story from Kevin Warren, Engineered Energy Equipment in Lakeland, “I’m

For Advertising Info 813-928-6124 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

a deer hunter (not a trophy hunter) who stores enough meat in our freezer to last us for a year. My son returned home after Hurricane Irma when he found that all of his food had gone bad, and his home was a mess after the freezer and refrigerator had been without power for over a week. I have an overseas vacation planned, and I won’t be home to run my generator if a power outage occurs. Like a lot of Floridians, I have a manual generator that runs on diesel fuel, so I have to keep fuel in my garage, and that worries me too.” Amelia Mulholland, Phoenix Power Systems, explained to Mr. Warren that their Briggs & Stratton® generators are run on Natural gas or liquid propane, so there is no refueling needed, and there is no need to store diesel and gasoline which can create dangerous fumes and a fire hazard. When the power goes out, their standby generators automatically start in as little as ten seconds. Food in coolers and freezers stays safe. Most of us, however, are home during storms that do not require us to evacuate. With Florida’s heat and humidity, our living arrangements can quickly become unlivable, and who wants to uproot our

families or pay for a hotel or motel room when the air conditioner and lights can stay on? Backup generator owners can maintain their family’s comfort while their home’s needs such as lights, water heater, refrigerator, air conditioner, etc. stay on during an outage. These days, many of us work out of home offices, and a power outage means we have no Internet, Wi-Fi, mobile device chargers, or landlines to operate our businesses. Keeping the lights on and critical business applications running smoothly can be crucial, if you own or run a business. With a backup generator, you can reduce downtime and lost revenue. The Phoenix Power Systems generators can power it all, from a small business to a high tech luxury home. For larger businesses, Phoenix Power Systems provides Commercial Backup Generators that operate as standby generators to keep a business’s doors open to serve customers during an outage that lasts hours, days or even weeks. Backup power equipment meets the most demanding needs of virtually any commercial operation including stores, offices, restaurants, and small to medium

manufacturing and industrial operations. Many of our Florida residences are “second homes,” and many of our residents reside in or travel in RV’s. Phoenix Power Systems specializes in services for all makes and models of RV generators and provides in-shop or mobile service on all makes and models. Florida’s “snowbirds” can rest assured that no matter how often they travel or where they go, their backup generators will keep their homes powered regardless of the weather. As well, Phoenix Power Systems provides generator tune-ups, repairs, engine rebuilds, control boards, voltage regulators, carburetor cleaning, and voltage and frequency adjustment. Generator maintenance includes oil, oil filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, and air filter. As a standby generator company in Tampa that specializes in the sales, service, and repairs of emergency generators, Phoenix Power Systems can take care of all your back-up power needs whether you own a home, business, or RV.
