The Only Surgical Based Multi-Specialty Dental Practice in the Greater Tampa Bay Area By Dr. Michael A. Pikos and Staff Norman Cousins once said, “The human body experiences a powerful gravitational pull in the direction of hope. That is why the patient’s hopes are the physician’s secret weapon. They are the hidden ingredients in any prescription.” This statement is true for the team of doctors at Coastal Jaw Surgery.

Our Coastal Jaw Surgery teams offers members of the Greater Tampa Bay area a dynamic, surgical based multi-specialty dental practice that allows many procedures to be completed under one roof while creating a safe, welcoming environment to make all patients feel like family.

TOAST - Grilled Cheese Sandwiches with a Twist

By Carla Selby A relatively new, modern, bright, and immaculately clean Citrus Park eatery allows Tampa Bay residents to experience the magic of Grilled Cheese sandwiches, elevated to the next level with fresh ingredients combined in deliciously creative ways. A grilled cheese sandwich is often heated by placing buttered slices of thick bread, with cheese between the slices, on a frying pan or

griddle, making it perfectly crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. At Toast Citrus Park, they go above and beyond adding just cheese to their grilled sandwiches; they add quality ingredients such as pastrami, mortadella, chorizo, roast pork, rib eye, corned beef, and a blend of fancy (sometimes imported) cheeses, between those two slices of toasty, buttery bread, to make you go YUM! after every bite.

AUDIOLOGIST GAINS GREATER INSIGHTS INTO NEEDS OF HEARING-IMPAIRED CONSUMERS

(LUTZ, FL)— Dr. Judith L. Reese recently attended a conference in St. Joseph, Michigan for hearing professionals from around the country and Canada, with presentations focused on improving hearing aid patients’ experience with the ever-improving technological developments in hearing devices. “Every day, millions of people rely on their hearing devices to keep them connected with their families, their friends and their coworkers.” Dr. Reese explained on her return. “Knowing how the best hearing professionals focus on their patient’s needs help us raise the level of excellence in hearing care in the Tampa Bay region.” Dr. Reese joined peers from throughout North America to hear Dr. Gyl Kasewurm of Professional Hearing Services share industry developments

and best practices related to new technology as well as quality consumer education that made Dr. Kasewurm’s practice a leader and innovative clinic respected by manufacturers and consumers. “Hearing devices nowadays are the most complicated and sophisticated consumer electronics item that a person can buy,” Dr. Reese explains. “The best way to ensure that devices are working optimally for the consumer is to make the ideal match of individual need, specific hearing impairments, with the right technology and ongoing professional adjustments.” Dr. Reese’s own clinic, JC Audiology in Lutz, Fl, is an innovative practice as well. Dr. Reese opened the practice in 2005, and it was the first female-owned private practice audiology company in the greater Tampa area. Since then she has treated about

Dr. Judith L. Reese with Dr. Gyl Kasewurm. 2,500 patients, and opened her Tampa Bay Hearing Aid Hospital, which services on average more than 125 hearing devices every month. During the Month of June, Dr. Reese and her

colleague, Dr. Jennifer Steed, are conducting free hearing screenings for adults on Fridays. Those interested in a hearing check can call (813) 949-1331 to schedule an appointment.

A Kid’s Place of Tampa Bay… A Bridge to Safety For Children By Lisa Stephens Sometimes being a kid isn’t as simplistic as many of us recall. Unfortunately, some children experience life situations that conclude with them being placed in an environment away from their initial home. Fortunately, there are places like A Kid’s Place that will take in these children who desperately need a loving environment in which they can be understood and well taken of. A Kid’s Place is a non-profit organization that provides refuge for abused, neglected and abandoned children. A Loving Place For Kids in Need The mission of A Kid’s Place is to provide a safe, loving and nurturing home for foster children or children who have been removed from their home due to neglect, abuse or abandonment. They certainly do that and more! Development

12 JUNE 2019

Director Samantha Mellen explained the average length of stay for children at A Kid’s Place is approximately six months. “I love working with the children and seeing them have the opportunity to be a child,” she said. “It’s inspiring to see our community come together and help those in need.” This unique 60-bed facility houses children ranging in age from newborns to those about to “age out” of the foster care program once they reach 18 years of age. Nestled upon 5 acres of land in Brandon, this facility offers children a home-like environment in a neighborhood setting. Their in-house parent model provides children with consistent caregivers. When possible, residents are housed with their siblings. Brothers and sisters are allowed to be placed together to encounter the healing process in the presence of one another. Therapy, dental and educational services are provided on site.

Pre-kindergarten and toddler programs are also offered as well. At A Kid’s Place, children don’t have to be transported offsite to receive these crucial services. They’re all available to them in the familiar space of A Kid’s Place. The goal of A Kid’s Place is to be the supportive bridge

to children between where they’ve come from and where their next best home can be. That next best home might be with relatives, a foster home or reunification with family when the timing is right for that. Or possibly adoption. Whatever the case, children placed at A Kid’s Place will enjoy a safe and loving

environment until their next home is determined. Helping One Child at A Time The services provided to children residing at A Kid’s Place are second to none! They aim to meet the social, educational, medical and psychological needs of each child there. Wellchild exams, immunizations and minor illness treatments are provided to residents of A Kid’s Place. Dental cleanings and evaluations are provided by Suncoast Dental. Bay Area Behavioral Services provides counseling services to children in need of healing from past trauma. Educational services are also provided to those children in need of help to catch up with grade level classmates. To gain skills for future independent living, a program is also offered for residents 13 years and older. Combined with their Youth in Action program, teens are prepared to learn and grow in a safe environment.

How You Can Help How is all this made possible? Fundraising is key to the success of A Kid’s Place. There are several annual events held that have become community favorite events. Their Annual Golf Classic is held every October. Get your group together now to enjoy this fun event! This is held each year at the prestigious Avila Golf and Country Club and features hole contests, prizes and auctions! Their Home is Where the Heart

SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: SUMMER PREP CLASSES By Dr. Wayne Adams

Wow? Summer break has already started. Before we know it, high schools will be back in session in early August. How time flies, especially over the summer. The first and second Saturday of June each year, the SAT and the ACT give “back to back” exams. This is the only time these exams do not come in successive months. Starting two years ago, the SAT added an exam the last Saturday in August, about two weeks after school starts. Not to be outdone, last year the ACT added an exam the second Saturday in July. The result has been more and more students prefer to prepare over the summer for the first SAT and ACT exams of the fall. Rising seniors want to see if their scores are high enough for desired colleges and universities (and for Bright Futures), rising juniors want

22 JUNE 2019

to see how they would score plus preparing for the PSAT in mid-October, and many rising sophomores incorporate preparing for these exams as part of their longer term strategy to be admitted to the best university possible and seek to maximize scholarships. One of the great rewards of my helping my students have their best possible futures, including doing their best on the SAT and/or the ACT Exams, is seeing them achieve our definition of success. At our first class in the first fifteen minutes, usually with one or both parents as well, they hear my definition of success. Rather than a number attained on an exam, my definition of success is very simple, and takes a lot of pressure off (up to half of doing their best is mental). “When you walk out of taking the exam on that Saturday, I want you to look back at all we have done during

our time together and simply say, ‘I have done my very best with the time and the priorities that I had.’ No one can ask any more of you in life, and each of us should require no less of ourself.” When I ask a student how well they want to do on the exam(s), many times they give me a number such as in the 1300’s to the 1400’s- or higher - on the SAT, or high 20’s to 30’s on the ACT. When this occurs, and it does often, I always say that a better answer is to simply do their best, and let the numbers take care of themselves. If we set a number as a goal, then we are all human and as we approach it we tend to “slack off.” At the same time, if a student aim for a 1400 and only score a 1380 on the SAT (or a 32 and only score a 30 on the ACT), is that student a failure? No! One of the reasons for this definition is that I have seen that “life” is “what happens

when we are planning to something else!” So many “surprises” happen during our prep classes, such as surprise exams or essays at school, getting sick, family emergencies, and even one student learning she would have to have her wisdom teeth taken out the day before the SAT Exam (naturally, we rescheduled for the exam, adjusted our classes, and she achieved a 1530!). And as you know from prior articles, I am as proud of a student who climbs from a 14 to a 20 on the ACT as I am a student that goes from a 1350 to a 1530 on the SAT … so long as each student can walk out of that exam and say to themselves that they have done their very best with the time and the priorities they had. This is one reason I don’t give homework… I give “suggestions”… because life happens and I never want to have a student not want to

For Advertising Info 813-928-6124 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

come to the next class because they haven’t been able to do their homework. Most of my students are so motivated by quickly seeing that they can dramatically improve and then a continuing climb in their scores that they find the time and the priority to do work out of class. If this is the type of supercoaching, mentoring, and performance improvement you would like for your student(s), then please give me a call at 727-253-0639 or send an e mail at wwa0811@mykolab.com. Would be great to talk with you further. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve 200 – 350 points on the Writing, Reading, Writing and Essay, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to eight of the top ten universities in the country, eighteen of the top twentyfive, and many schools in Florida. These schools include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago,

Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), University of Virginia, NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Air Force and Merchant Marine Service Academies, Penn State, Purdue, Ohio State, LSU, Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, FIU, New College of Florida, Stetson, and Julliard – Manhattan - New England - and Berkley Conservatories of Music. Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. This year, he also tutored three juniors who scored at the national merit finalist/semi-finalist levels on the most recent PSAT. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

“Toast” continued from page 1 Conveniently located at 8552 Gunn Hwy and open daily from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm, Toast Citrus Park opened its doors in August 2018, and it is already famous for their grilled cheese sandwiches with a twist, affordable prices, and friendly service. Recent customer, Denise T. says, “We visited on Monday late morning. It’s a warm and amicable place. Well laid out, with a large menu and lots of off the menu ‘secret,’ specials. The service is very attentive. I had the Brie and Strawberry stuffed toast, and my husband had the Gyro. They came out fast and hot. The food was so good we had no leftovers. The prices are great. We’ve been looking for a place like this for years. Great quality food, interesting choices, outstanding service, and great prices. How can you go wrong with that? Thanks, Toast, we’ll be back, a lot.” Whether you’re coming in for breakfast or lunch, you’ll find endless homemade choices that will surely satisfy your tastebuds, and make your tummy real happy. With a unique list of weekly specials (all under $10) showcased on a board at the back wall, and a standard, more classic breakfast and lunch menu featuring a large selection of waffles, pancakes, salads,

24 JUNE 2019

homemade soups, sandwiches, crepes, wraps, and pitas amongst many other options, Toast truly offers something for everyone. “Their weekly and seasonal specials are AMAZING,” says regular, Janet L. “The Almond Joy French Toast is delicious! The atmosphere, food, and service are second to none. Toast is my new favorite place in the area.” If the name Toast sounds familiar, you may know it from their original location at New Port Richey, which has been going strong for almost eight years! Owners Stefano and Gina Mouratos are the dynamic duo behind these two family owned and operated “Mom and Pop” style restaurants, and what a fantastic, and hard working team they make! Stefano and Gina have two lovely daughters; Evyenia and Eleni, and they want nothing but the best for both of them. “We work very hard for our family,” says Stefano. “My wife and I had a very humble upbringing. We didn’t come from much, so we want to make sure we’re able to provide our daughters with a good life, and allow them to follow their dreams.” Gina and Stefano are as genuine as they are talented. They came up with the innovative Toast concept together, and were able to carefully design a delicious menu from scratch that

is fresh, creative, and stands out from other restaurants in the area. Christina V. rates toast five stars and expressed her Toast love and support by saying, “I love it!!! I was on the hunt for a local mom and pop shop, and I’m so pleased I happened upon Toast. The food is delicious, they offer creative dishes, service is excellent, and the atmosphere is charming. Can’t wait to go back.” Toast Citrus Park regular Ali T. says, “This is my daughter’s favorite place to eat, it literally has become a tradition to go here every Sunday with my little family to get some breakfast. There’s something about this place that makes it unique, let alone I love how this little mom and pop place kind of becomes like another home/family. The owners will remember your face and even sit and talk with you the more you come, which gives it that little extra touch that makes it so amazing. Let alone the wife makes my daughter a special hot chocolate from time to time that my daughter loves. This place is amazing, the people are amazing, and the surroundings are super cute. Definitely worth giving this place a try. Make sure to ask Gina or Stefano about the Secret Specials.” Gina and Stefano split their time between the two Toast locations, overseeing all employees, greeting customers, maintaining inventory, monitoring the preparation and serving of

food, ensuring that the restaurant meets all health and food safety regulations, and acting as the perfect example of how to properly run a quality family restaurant. Stefano has worked in the restaurant industry most of his life; as a matter of fact, he started as a server at Outback and Carraba’s, working his way up and acquiring an enormous amount of experience in different positions, making him a Jack of all trades in the restaurant business. Gina and Stefano treated me like family and allowed my mother (who decided to join me for this appointment) and I, the pleasure of tasting multiple delicious dishes, including an option from their “Secret Menu.” I have to admit that the “Secret Hash Toast” is now my favorite breakfast sandwich, ever. Imagine two thick, buttery, crispy slices of toast, grilled to perfection, with a vast amount of melty ooey-gooey cheese that overflows from the sandwich, combined with runny eggs, and a flavorful corned beef hash served with a cup of Greek Lemon Chicken Soup as a side. Yummy! Just make sure you have plenty of napkins around, you’re going to need them! The soups rotate almost daily, so make sure to ask your server about the soup of the day. We also got to try a delicious chorizo omelet served with hash browns, their famous Croque Madame served with seasoned breakfast potatoes, and the most

For Advertising Info 813-928-6124 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

delicious Banana’s Foster Waffles I’ve ever had. I’ve never seen my mother eat as much as she did at Toast. And for someone like her, an extremely picky eater, to devour every dish was a strong testament of how amazing the food was. As if that wasn’t enough, Stefano and Gina surprised us with the last treat; homemade beignets. They were so tasty that my mother ate most of them when I wasn’t looking! Beignets are commonly known in New Orleans as a breakfast food and served with copious amounts of powdered sugar on top. Stefano and Gina serve theirs with the same delicious powdered sugar on top and include a delicious chocolate sauce for dipping. Make sure to order their specialty greek iced coffee; the Greek Frappe, and enjoy it with your meal or on the go! You will not be disappointed. “Many

customers call in advance to order their Frappes and pick it up from the store,” says Stefano. “They park in the front, pay and take it, like a quick ‘stop and go’ coffee house.” In the short seven months, they’ve been open, Toast Citrus Park has received a warm welcome, and very positive response by a multitude of locals who were craving that modern originality mixed with a homemade taste, around the Citrus Park area. Local Chef and food guide Tony L. says “This place is a hidden gem. I know that it recently opened, but I foresee lines out the door soon enough. Probably the only place in Tampa that makes liver and onions that isn’t ‘cash only.’ As a chef, I highly recommend at least two visits. One for lunch and one for breakfast. I can’t wait to go back for the beignets.” First-time visitor Elizabeth M.

says, “This was our first visit, and it was AMAZING. Our waitress was so personable and made great recommendations. The coffee was smooth, and they have a ton of rotating specials. I think this is a great addition to the Citrus Park area and we will be back!” A quick google search will prompt you to hundreds of other 5 star reviews from satisfied customers, and Gina and Stefano couldn’t be happier about the ongoing support the Citrus Park community has shown them. “We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our supporters for all they have done to make the new Toast location

a reality. Without the generous support of the community, our new location would not have been possible. We’re truly fortunate and blessed to live in such a caring and compassionate community. We thank you for your business, and we look forward to serving you and your family, at either one of our Toast locations.” Toast Citrus Park is located at 8552 Gunn Hwy. Odessa, FL 33556. It’s Summer Time! Summer is almost here, and so is the 90+ degree weather! Summer begins on Friday, June 21st and gives us 94 days in the season, ending Monday, September 23rd. In spite of the heat, the humidity, and those afternoon showers, Tampa Bay is full of amazing activities you can enjoy throughout the hot days of Summer. Here’s a list of activities you and your family, friends, and loved ones can enjoy during the Summer. 1.) Go to the beach - What better way to spend a weekend than soaking up the sun, drinking some Pina Coladas (If you’re over 21) and enjoying the beautiful beaches that Tampa Bay has to offer! The options are endless; you can visit Clearwater Beach, Belleair Beach, Indian Rocks Beach, North Redington Beach, Madeira Beach, Treasure Island, St. Pete Beach, Pass-A-Grille Brach, South Pasadena, or Tierra Verde amongst others. 2.) Go biking - a bike ride around your neighborhood, local park or a biking trail - Biking is a fun activity you can do with your whole family. Choose between the Upper Tampa Bay Trail in the northwest end of Hillsborough County near Memorial Highway in Westchase. Visit Flatwoods Park, located on Morris Bridge Road in Tampa. Test your endurance and bike across the Courtney Campbell Causeway trail. You can park for free at Cypress Point Park or Skyway Park, and ride your bike one way and then back again, taking in the beautiful water views and the city skyline all around you. 3.) Go kayaking or paddle boarding - Some of the best spots are; The Hillsborough River, Little Manatee River, Myakka River, Withlacoochee, and Rainbow Rivers, Suwannee River, Chassahowitzka River, Silver Springs, Caladesi Island, and Weedon Island Preserve. I personally recommend the Rainbow River because the water is crystal clear and at a constant low to mid 70s temperature, it’s a great way to cool off during the hot and humid Tampa Summer days. You can see turtles, fish and a variety of birds. It’s definitely a unique experience. If possible, try to visit during a weekday since it gets really crowded over the weekends. There are also several campground options available if you’re into sleeping under the stars. 4.) Visit a unique restaurant in the Tampa Bay area you have never tried before. Explore new neighborhoods where you don’t normally eat at.

Become inspired and get ideas from our hundreds of local advertisers; take advantage of their Summer Specials, offers, and coupons advertised on all editions of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles. 5.) Visit Hyde Park Village - Set in Hyde Park’s stunning historic district with tree-lined streets and charming brick walkways, Hyde Park Village is an amazing place for on-street retail, local businesses (including a movie theatre) and award-winning restaurants. Whether you visit during the day, or at night, there’s plenty to keep you occupied and happy. They also host local farmer’s markets on select dates, so visit www. hydeparkvillage.com for more information. 6.) Check out Busch Garden’s Summer Nights - As the sun goes down, the party heats up at Busch Gardens during Summer Nights from May 31 - August 11. Experience fireworks and thrilling rides like the all-new Tigris and dance the night away with live music and entertainment at different party zones throughout the park. 7.) Catch a famous Broadway play, opera, comedy show, concert or a variety of other fantastic events at the Straz Center in downtown Tampa. Visit www.strazcenter.org for more information and a list of upcoming events. 8.) Show your support for our local sports teams! Attend a Tampa Bay Rays, Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Tampa Tarpons game, amongst others. 9.) Attend a concert at the Amalie Arena or the MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre. Visit ticketmaster.com or amphitheatretampa.com for an updated list of upcoming shows and concerts. 10.) Visit a Museum -Recently Tampa Bay was awarded the honor of being one of the “Top Arts Destination” by American Style Magazine. Discover an eclectic collage of museums featuring the surreal masterworks of Salvador Dali to traveling Smithsonian Exhibitions. Get a group together and visit MOSI (Museum of Science and Industry), the Tampa Bay History Center, the Henry B. Plant Museum, the Dali Museum, or the USF Contemporary Art Museum amongst many others. I hope that gives you enough options to choose from when you find yourself wondering what to do this Summer. Until next time,

Carla Selby.

Tech Talk with Bob - STOP: Before Repairing Your PC By Bob Dalles Imagine this. The computer you bought from that big box store seven months ago no longer works. No problem, it’s still under warranty. You call the manufacturer and get a return authorization from them. You pack and ship your computer to them. Today, two months later, you are finally getting it back from the manufacturer and cannot wait to turn it on. You turn it on and it boots right up into the desktop. You notice that your desktop doesn’t look the same way you had it before you sent it for repair. Upon further investigation you realize that some programs are missing, you cannot access your printer, and most importantly, all your pictures, videos, music and other data is nowhere to be found. Your computer works, but your personal stuff is gone. You call the manufacturer to ask about your data. Suddenly you find out that the only obligation they had to you under the warranty is that they would repair or replace

your computer to the way it was the day you brought it home from the store and took it out of the box. The manufacturer has no liability when it comes to your data. You learn the hard way that your missing programs, data, etc. are your problem. Many people find themselves in this predicament every day. Fortunately, you won’t. Computers are viewed by many as being no different as they see coffee makers or any other electronic appliance. Electronic coffee makers use hardware and some type of software to make them function. However, the software that runs your coffee maker is not as sophisticated as the software that runs your computer. People typically do not differentiate between the hardware and software aspects of a computer system. The truth is, where the software in your coffee maker never changes, the software in your computer is constantly changing. Especially your data files as you add and delete your music, pictures and other

personal documents. All this information is stored on your computer’s hard disk drive (HDD). Your HDD stores all computer software information including your personal and unique computer information. This unique information is created over time as you use your computer system by adding programs, printers, data, etc. All these changes alter the contents of your HDD. When you send your computer to the manufacturer for repair, your HDD may be physically replaced by having a new HDD installed into your computer or logically replaced by having all the information on the HDD erased and then rewritten with the information the HDD had on it when your computer was new out of the box. Think of it this way. If you ever had the battery in your car replaced, the first thing you probably learned when you got back into your car is that all your radio preset stations have been wiped out due to the battery being disconnected. The

auto repair shop’s responsibility is not to restore your radio presets but to replace your car’s battery with a working one. You’ll just have to reprogram those preset stations all over again. The same is true of your computer. Important information

can be lost during the repair. If it is your personal data, like rare photos, it may be impossible to replace. It is always your responsibility to make sure you have what you need to restore the programs and data you have added to your computer since you bought it. But no one ever tells you this until it is too late. So how do you minimize your data loss when you need your computer system repaired? The first thing you do is make certain that all your personal data is backed up. This can be difficult if your computer will not turn on. Even if your computer will not turn on, it may still be possible that your data can be extracted from the HDD before you send your computer off for repair. If you are not familiar with how to get your data backed up, contact a professional computer technician for help. The next thing you will need are the installation disk and/or files for any software you added to the computer after you bought it. Make sure you have all your installation media and product keys so these items can be reinstalled with as little trouble as possible. A list of your email and website user names and passwords are also going to need to be reentered the first time you try to access any of the secured websites you visit. If you are not sure if you have everything you need to recover all of the additions you made to your computer since you bought it, contact a professional computer technician to help you get all your ducks in a row. A small investment in prevention will save you a lot of money, and grief, when your time comes to get your computer repaired. Especially if you rely on your computer for managing your business or investments. Have a tech question? Email it to TechTalk-TBNL@ BobTheComputerGuy.NET. Questions will be selected by the popularity of a topic and answered in this column. If you have a more urgent need or have a unique situation you may schedule an appointment with one of my Professionally Certified Technicians by calling 727-534-4000. Until next time, stay safe on the internet!
