Mease Countryside Hospital: Wrapping Babies in More Than Blankets “Amazing staff. Healthy newborn and wife. … Absolute best experience in a hospital.” “OB and NICU teams are both fantastic!” “Best hospital in the world. Wouldn’t trust anyone else with my babies.” Those are just a few comments from satisfied parents who welcomed their newborns at Mease Countryside Hospital. While the hospital is known for its

family-centered care and experienced team, Mease Countryside also is prepared for emergencies with a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on campus. The NICU, which is the only Level III NICU in northern Pinellas and Pasco counties, offers an extra layer of support to parents when premature births or other issues arise. “We are dedicated to our patients’ needs before, during

Whether you want to be terrified by zombies at haunted houses, (safely) collect as much candy as possible with your little ones, impress neighbors with the best Halloween decor or show off your best costume at a local party, you’re in for a treat...or a trick! With events such as Howl-O-Scream at Busch Gardens, an original “Halloween (1978)” showing at the Tampa Theatre on Wednesday, October 31st and a showing of “Hocus Pocus” on Saturday, October 28th, as well as many fantastic Halloween parties and pub crawls, you will have to pick and choose which local event(s) you will enjoy the most. Even though I am Catholic, I’ve celebrated Halloween in the past and will continue to do in the future. For the longest time, I believed it was frowned upon; I felt guilty about wearing costumes and celebrating with friends. Tired about feeling remorse and being confused about the meaning of Halloween, I decided to do some major research to find out what Catholics truly believe about Halloween. For those who don’t know, Halloween is short for All Hallow’s Eve. It’s the vigil of All Saints (All Hallows) Day. All Saints Day is a Holy Day of Obligation, a major feast on the Catholic Church’s liturgical calendar. Halloween (October 31st), All Saints Day (November 1st) and All Souls Day (November 2nd) are all connnected. Together, they are known as the “Days of the Dead,” a trim of feasts also called Allhallowtide, Hallowtide, or Hallowmas (‘Hallow’ means to honor as holy.) Hallis is the first day of Allhallowtide, the time of year when the living honor

all the dead in Christ, all the saints in heaven, and the holy souls detained in purgatory, on their way to heaven. Catholics historically believed that, on these “Days of the Dead,” the veil between heaven, hell, and purgatory is the thinnest. It is also a strong reminder for the faithful of the reality of heaven and hell: the saints and the damned, demons and angels, and the holy souls suffering in purgatory. Contrary to popular belief, Halloween is actually a Catholic holiday and does not have its origins in paganism, Samhain, Celtic/ Druidic festivals or Satanism. This common misconception is modern anti-Catholic propaganda and has no basis in historical facts. The true substance of Halloween belongs to the Catholic Church. It was the English, Irish, and French immigrants who came to America and brought their variety of local Catholic customs with them: dressing up for Halloween comes from the French; Jack-oLanterns come from the Irish (originally carved turnips); and the English begged from door to door for “Soul Cakes,” promising to pray for the departed loved ones of those who gave them these treats, the roots of trick-ortreating. All those traditions converged and evolved in the American melting pot to what we do today for this famous festivity. The contemporary version of Halloween that glorifies the demonic, with emphasis on violence, horror, and sensuality is definitely not traditional. It is a pulling away from a friendly and faithful celebration of this essential religious holiday. It is true that Halloween has been extremely corrupted and hyper-commercialized, just like Christmas and

Easter, but that should never stop us Catholics from fully celebrating the great feasts of the Church the Catholic way, or from enjoying Halloween as a celebration of the great feast of All Saints. Halloween can truly be what you make of it! Whether or not you are Catholic doesn’t matter. This major celebration should be about following your own traditions and, of course, about having fun with your loved ones in the safest possible way. Many churches all over Tampa Bay are holding family-friendly celebrations and pot-lucks this October. I personally attend Sacred Heart in downtown Tampa, and they are holding a Fall Festival on Sunday, October 21st at their North Campus location from 11:30am to 3:30pm. There will be a climbing wall, a petting zoo, a bounce house, and more. So, plan ahead. Check with your local church and enjoy some fall fun. Happy Halloween!

Four-legged “pet therapists” are already an integral part of the center’s healing process. They even pay to house patients’ pets while they are in the rehab facility to encourage recovery during their rehab process.

The State Farm Agency Mitchell High School Student Athletes of the Month: By Alexis Majorana

Kennedy DeLuca and Nicholas Ferrini

The female Gregg Schindler State Farm Agency Student Athlete of the Month, Kennedy DeLuca, spends nearly every day on a volleyball court. Whether alongside Mya Jones and Megan McCain, the girls she’s played with since middle school, or the professionals that critique her every move, DeLuca practices volleyball in hopes of one day playing beyond high school. The skills DeLuca finessed through years of practice have been recognized with awards on the local and national levels. DeLuca’s school team has been named first-team all-conference for three consecutive years and an alltournament team at the 2018 Calvary Tournament. In club ball, DeLuca’s team earned the title of an all-tournament team at Junior Nationals. To develop the skills that won her these honors, DeLuca and her family sought club teams outside of their home district, including Orlando Tampa Volleyball Academy (OTVA) and Tampa Elite that had more to offer than local teams. “Clubs where I live are good for developing new players, but OTVA and Tampa Elite have more advanced facilities and coaches with more professional experience. They [required] lengthy drives, but both of those teams contributed greatly to my success,” DeLuca said. DeLuca takes the improvements she makes in her club teams and brings them to the school courts where she is looked to by her teammates for positive

leadership. “I believe in leading with energy and enthusiasm. I understand why people get unmotivated when we’re down a few points, but I always make it my job to bring in that positive energy in hope that it will be reciprocated,” DeLuca said. DeLuca sees all her hardships pay off when she looks into the stands and sees the smiling faces of her mom, dad, and grandparents. “I’ve received many awards but they don’t really compare to the feeling I get when I’m told I make my family proud,” DeLuca said. Though she is still deciding between colleges, DeLuca plans on pursuing her love for and success in volleyball. She puts her all into every game she plays. “My philosophy when I’m on the court is to play every point like it’s a championship match,” For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

DeLuca said. The male Gregg Schindler State Farm Agency Student Athlete of the Month,

Nicholas Ferrini, has the same goal in mind when he’s running down the field, waiting to intercept the

opposing quarterback’s throw and sprint the ball back to his team’s end zone. Through all his successes in the sport, from being named last year’s MVP on defense, first team all conference, and recording 52 tackles and 3.5 sacks already this season, Ferrini cites an interception he made last season in the second round of playoffs as the proudest accomplishment of his 12year football career. “We were down a few points until I made an interception on the other team’s throw, allowing us to make a touchdown and

steer ahead. We ended up losing that game but there was so much energy and excitement in that moment,” Ferrini said. Ferrini attributes the strategic footwork and fast pace that allow him to make such interceptions to his experience on the lacrosse team. “I’ve been playing football my entire life but when I started lacrosse at 11, I saw my football game improve tremendously. Lacrosse is all footwork so I’ve applied how I run in lacrosse to football and it’s really raised my game,” Ferrini said. Along with several awards and greater athleticism, the J.W. Mitchell High School varsity football team gifted Ferrini with teammates and coaches that served as an on-field family. “I was kind of anxious moving up to varsity when I was only a freshman but my coaches were very supportive and gave me the motivation to work and play hard. Coach Schmitz and Coach Fenton put me in the field gave me confidence,” Ferrini said. With determination and skill, both DeLuca and Ferrini represent J.W. Mitchell High School as the October Gregg Schindler State Farm Agency Student Athletes of the Month. Congratulations!

TCJA Changes and What They Could Mean for You By Karen Wiseman, EA The passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) will change the way tax is collected for most taxpayers beginning this year. Following the passage of the bill last December, those of you who are W2 employees likely saw a bump in your take home pay as the result of the new tax law. Although a welcome bonus, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you won’t have a tax liability at the end of the year. Your withholding rate is based on your gross W-2 wages; but it does not take into consideration additional income in the form of capital gains, a second job, rental income, contracting, etc. If you have additional income, whether from those

12 OCTOBER 2018

mentioned or another source, you may need to adjust your federal withholding. There is no question that everyone will be impacted including those with non-W2 income that is not subject to withholding. Here are some of the more notable changes in the new TCJA law: • The increase of the standard deduction (was $12,700 MFJ to $24,000 and $6,350 single to $12,000) • Removing personal exemption amounts (was $4,050 for each dependent on the return now included in that 24,000/12,000 deduction) • Increase of the child tax credit ($2,000 per qualifying child under 17) • Limiting or discontinuing certain

deductions such as home equity loan interest • Unreimbursed employee business expenses that were subject to 2% floor are no longer deductible (make sure your employer has a reimbursement policy in place) • Unfortunately, for those of you hoping to escape that healthcare penalty, it does not go away until 2019. In addition to the changes in the law, taxpayers will be using a completely revamped 1040 form for 2018 with a host of new schedules that aren’t even finalized yet. The W4 form you are provided when you start a new job or request a change in your Federal withholdings has been revamped as well. There is no longer a space

to enter the number of allowances on the new W-4. Instead, four new boxes will instruct you to predict your income and deductions. To help assist you with calculating this information the IRS recommends using their withholding calculator, available through IRS. gov. If you don’t want to make changes, the Federal

Government will allow taxpayers to continue to use their old W4 status with no need to file a new one. If you are not considered a W2 employee, you should be paying your taxes through quarterly estimated payments. For those with domestic businesses, Section 199A created a deduction for Qualified Business Income (QBI). Those businesses that are operated as a sole proprietor, partnership, S-Corporation, trust or estate may be eligible for up to a 20% deduction based on their QBI. If your gross income on your personal return exceeds $315,000 MFJ/ $157,500 Single, the QBI deduction is limited. Certain service-based trade or businesses could have their deduction phased out completely if your taxable income exceeds those levels.

Reviewing your tax situation before the end of the year is a good idea whether you file on a 1040 or you have corporate returns. Your tax professional can assist you with more detailed information on the new law. Contacting them now can help you understand and plan for how these new changes could affect you. Attorney Chuck S. Philips: Representing Clients When they Need it Most By Lisa Stephens Accidents happen. And unfortunately, they happen every day, out of the blue. We’re never prepared for the accident itself and even less prepared when it comes to the aftermath of an accident that has occurred as a result of negligence on behalf of someone else. Fortunately, Attorney Chuck Philips brings decades of experience into every case he represents for each of his clients. Philips is an expert when it comes to personal injury cases involving car accidents, motorcycle accidents and wrongful death cases. Philips’ inspiration to become an attorney came at an early age. “My father, Shelton Philips, was an insurance defense trial lawyer for over 40 years,” he explained. Other influences at an early age came from watching Perry Mason on television and the character Atticus Finch from the movie “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Philips began his legal career with the Pinellas County State Attorney’s Office where he handled misdemeanor and felony cases for nearly five years. He then joined an insurance defense practice where he represented

18 OCTOBER 2018

commercial clients and their insureds. He eventually joined another firm taking on the personal injury cases for Pasco, Hernando and Citrus counties. It was there he met Sharon Grimes, a paralegal for the firm. After seven years, he decided to open his own personal injury practice and Grimes joined him in that venture. Now, fifteen years later, Philips is still in practice with Grimes working alongside him as his legal assistant. Today, Chuck Philips considers his insurance defense experience as invaluable. “It allowed me to gain the knowledge of how insurance companies evaluate cases and set their reserves, what they look for in a case and why and the way they prepare cases for trial,” he explained. As for why he went into the personal injury area of law, Philips says he was enticed by the idea of representing people who really needed someone to fight for them in order to obtain compensation for their physical injuries incurred due to the negligence of someone else. “This is what still drives me today,” he shared. He further explained he appreciates “the

challenge of trying to make someone’s broken situation whole again by battling for what they are entitled to.” In order to make sure clients are well taken care of and represented, Philips limits the number of cases his practice represents. Quality of service to his clients over quantity of cases is paramount. When potential clients contact the office via email or phone call, a phone consultation will be scheduled with Philips. If during that conversation

it is determined that you have a case which Philips can assist with, an in-person consultation will then be scheduled. Once a case has been fully evaluated, a reasonable expectation of compensation is advised to the client. “Every case we take on for representation is one that we strive to maximize the benefits available to the client. We want to help them safely navigate the system with the most beneficial outcome to them, whether it be

For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

through negotiations, or when necessary through the litigation of the case,” he said. In some cases, if it isn’t in the best interest of the client to hire an attorney, Philips is straightforward with that information as well. He then gives the client information about the best way to proceed from there and other steps that can be taken. According to Philips, what happens at the scene of the incident is important. A common mistake he sees in many cases is people

making statements at the scene out of sympathy that can later be construed as admissions of liability. Philips advises not to make any statements regarding the accident to anyone other than law enforcement. While it is ok to inquire about the welfare of others involved in the accident, it is not wise to make any statement that can later be considered an admission of liability in the situation. Seven Springs Middle School and the Special Olympics Partnership By: Lisa Schindler The Seven Springs Middle School (SSMS) has been involved with the Special Olympics since the school first opened in 1996. In fact, Seven Springs Middle School was recognized this year as a National Unified School, which is a big honor. The school supports the Special Olympics’ mission to provide year round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic type sports for people with intellectual disabilities. This gives them the opportunity to develop physical fitness and experience the joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skill and friendship with families, other athletes and the community. Athletes are registered to participate in county games held in a school setting so parents can see what we offer and how excited their child is to participate. Once athletes participates in County games they can qualify to move onto Area game competition and then possibly move on to State game competition held at Disney’s

Wide World of Sports. SSMS educates students, parents and community member about sporting opportunities for children with and without intellectual disabilities occurring outside and inside the school environment. SSSM trains and encourages student to participate in a variety of sports. SSMS hosts after school practice on Wednesday evenings from 5-6 pm. All are welcomed to attend. SSMS Adapted physical education teacher, Lori Jaros, has been involved with program for over 25 years and you can see the passion she has for the program and for the kids. Jaros has formed many unified teams for basketball, flag football, soccer and bowling. She loves seeing the intellectually disabled and non- disabled kids playing together on the same team. “Students are matched up so that you can’t tell who has a disability and who doesn’t and it is a beautiful thing.” Both groups get so much from participating. The athletes get the joy of competing and camaraderie and the non–disabled

kids love the friendships formed and they feel good knowing they are helping other people. This program really builds community. Jaros said that there are not many programs in the area that offer lifetime athletic programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities and that many of her students come every Wednesday long after they have graduated. She loves that SSMS is able to be there for them and offer this program.

Fish the Best, Fish a Yellowfin! By Capt. Matt Selby We are really proud to announce we are adding a brand new custom-built Yellowfin to our fleet. This is a very exciting time for us because in all honesty, this is the only boat I’ve ever wanted, and we are really excited to share it with our clients. There are certain moments in your life that you can recall like it was yesterday, no matter how much time passes. I remember the first time I saw a Yellowfin…I was in High School and my Dad

called me into the living room, “Matt, come in here,” he said, with what I thought was a serious tone. I was 15, so usually when my Dad called me into the room like that I

did something he wasn’t happy about. As I walked in, I was racking my brain trying to figure out what I did, or at least what he found out I did wrong. He was glued to the

TV. After a few seconds, he said, “Check out the lines on this boat.” He was right; the style was unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. Now I was glued to

the fishing show he was watching as well and couldn’t get over the look of this boat. We noticed it said Yellowfin on the side and since we didn’t have smart phones back then or even high-speed internet, I jumped on my parents desktop and fired up AOL. About 3 minutes later I was online and I searched “Yellowfin Fishing Boat.” 5 minutes after that, a number of photos popped up on my screen of these beautiful fishing machines. I was drawn to the sleek flowing lines of the boat and the proud front bow. From that day forward I knew I’d own one someday.

In August of 2017, we put down our deposit and got on their custom build list. Yellowfin custom builds each boat, one by one, to ensure quality and perfection their clients have come to expect over their 20 years as industry leaders in high-performance fishing vessels. Our boat recently came out of the mold and is scheduled for delivery the first week of October! If you or the fishing enthusiast in your life wants an opportunity to catch a trophy fish in style, call us today! Epic Sport Fishing 727-253-5893

SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: GOOD NEWS! by Dr. Wayne Adams FALL EXAM DATES: SAT: November 3 and December 1; ACT: October 27 and December 8. GOOD NEWS FOR FLORIDIANS in the new college and university rankings from US News and World Report. UF jumped from 41 to 35, FSU from 81 to 70, USF from 140 to 124, and UCF from 171 to 165. Unfortunately, UM went from 46 to 53. AS WE MOVE CLOSER TO COLLEGE APPLICATION DEADLINES, all parents should be aware that colleges with early decision and early admission options are accepting far more of their freshman student body early, which means the number of students accepted in regular applications has plummeted. One example is Vanderbilt

24 OCTOBER 2018

last year, who only left 500 freshman slots for 25,000 applicants in regular decision … 2%. MOST SCHOOLS ACCEPT SAT AND ACT SCORES THROUGH THE END OF THE FALL, but not all. Especially with the move to Early Decision acceptances, check the website for each school you are interested in for the specifics so you are not late and therefore disqualified from further consideration. THE FIVE KEY CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION are still class standing (especially from a highly-rated high school, whether public or private), GPA, SAT and/or ACT scores, quality of college application essay (or essays), and additional activities. This past year, class standing was not as important (valedictorian, salutatorian, etc.) and the importance of GPA,

exam scores, application essays, and especially additional activities were elevated. If you are shooting for a “Top 25” school, these activities are special strengths and abilities proven by years of pursuit that already show how you have the potential to “change the world”. Top schools want

“lopsided” students, not “wellrounded” students. THE FIRST DIFFICULTY FOR MOST FLORIDA STUDENTS BEING ADMITTED to an “ultimate dream school” is their SAT and/or ACT scores. During my classes, I often help my students think about “special strengths” they can

For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

develop to show skill and persistence in a field associated with interests and abilities they already have. MOST OF YOU KNOW BY NOW that my over-riding goal for my students is for them to have their best possible futures, which includes doing their best on their SAT and/or ACT Exams and admission to a great university. As part of this, I will be happy to SEND YOU A FREE COPY OF MY NEW REPORT: Dream Colleges And Universities: Top 25 In The Country, 5 More To Consider, and Top 5 In Florida. Just send an e mail to me requesting the FREE REPORT, and I will be glad to do so at no obligation. This is part of my appreciation to our community for the privilege of helping so many students over the years. And if you receive one, feel free to forward it to anyone else you think might be helped by the information. FOR SENIORS AND

FAMILIES, this report can greatly help in final planning and preparation for college applications. FOR JUNIORS, SOPHOMORES, FRESHMEN AND FAMILIES, this report can greatly help in your planning for the future. AND IF I CAN HELP YOUR STUDENT with exam scores, strategic and sometimes detailed advice for applications, or life-lessons that will help in college and for life ... just let me know at wwa0811@mykolab.com or call me at 727-253-0639. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve 200 – 350 points on the Writing, Reading, Writing and Essay, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to eight of the top ten universities in the country, eighteen of the top twenty-five, and many schools in Florida. These

schools include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), University of Virginia, NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Air Force and Merchant Marine Service Academies, Penn State, Purdue, Ohio State, LSU, Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, FIU, New College of Florida, Stetson, and Julliard – Manhattan New England - and Berkley Conservatories of Music. Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. This year, he also tutored three juniors who scored at the national merit finalist/ semi-finalist levels on the most recent PSAT. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and

Once she reached high school, Laurie worked at her mom’s office on weekends answering the phones and helping other agents. After high school graduation, she went right back to working in the real estate business. She then earned her sales associates license and by 1978, she earned her brokers’ license. “I learned early the dedication and care needed to list, sell and rent properties.” By 1991, Laurie became the broker/owner of her own Marie Powell Realty office in Pasco County, growing it to two offices. Fast forward to today; Laurie works for Re/Max Advantage Realty. “I feel that this has propelled my career forward,” she said. The Broker/ Owner of Re/Max Advantage Realty, Rachel Gallagher, has been very supportive in moving

Laurie’s career to the next level. Rachel believes in having a positive support office culture and helping agents build a business for themselves…not by themselves. The office is very active in local education, community and Chamber events. Laurie received special recognition from Re/Max as the 15th top agent for sales in Florida and Georgia for the second quarter of 2018. “Since moving my business to Re/Max Advantage Realty, I have been able to move my business to the next level and have grown my business tremendously.” She goes on to express and tell the experiences of the great team of sales professionals who are there to serve their customers. “We have a wonderful team and synergy is flowing in the office”. She went on to say “We have a great team of affiliates who work with us to support the mortgage

needs of our consumers with their insurance, title, property management needs and more. Re/Max has the tools, technology, and agents that provide our customers what is needed to make their transaction an awesome and profitable experience. Nobody in the world sells more real estate than Re/Max. Having outgrown their previous workspace, Re/Max Advantage moved to a new 5,000 sq. ft. location in 2017 at 10710 SR 54 Suite C Trinity….Stop by

sometime. As for the seller, “I can understand and relate to every client. Every seller has their own unique circumstance and reason for selling their home.” She went on to relate that selling a home can be a process and she, as an agent, aims to guide every client through each step of the way. When Laurie lists a property, she puts in the time and effort to make sure each home has the right marketing campaign attached to it to be sold quickly. This campaign

includes professional photos, color flyers, postcards, social media and more. “I work to be sure that I take care of every detail to ensure a sale.” Her drive is her passion for making a positive difference to the people she touches. “My job is complete when I help the customer put the pieces together to complete their plan and goals.” In today’s’ market, she explains, inventory is at its lowest. “ We are

experiencing a seller’s market, as long as a sellers’ home is properly prepared, priced and well marketed, “ she said. For a buyer, this means that you need to be ready when the call comes for a quick decision. When it comes to what she looks for in a client, Neiman knows the importance of listening to clients and their needs. I look for customers who want and need my professional experience,”

she said. Neiman offers the experience and knowledge to get the job done by putting the pieces together and caring for them personally. If you’re looking to downsize or increasing your living space, Neiman can help you get exactly what you’re looking for. Listening to clients is key for Neiman. “I specialize in listening to my clients carefully and having an impeccable knowledge of the current market and the available listings, and being a comforting hand to guide you through each step of the moving process.” If you’re in the market to sell your home, Neiman has suggestions for that as well. She advises the seller to prep

the inside and outside of the home, as you are looking to make a great impression. Simple things like updating the curb appeal to your home, de-cluttering closets, and pantries and having the home professionally cleaned can really make a difference when showing your home to strangers. Buyers, she said, should look for a home in which they can imagine seeing themselves living in for the next five or more years. Cosmetic changes, she said, can be easily changed. She advises buyers to look at the “bones” of the home that you can live with or you may want to change. Laurie has many years of service to the Association of Realtors. She has served as President of West Pasco Board of Realtors, 2001 President of Greater Clearwater Association of Realtors, 2011 President of Hernando Association of Realtors. nearly 1,000 years of collective experience to provide expectant mothers and their babies with the utmost care,” said Hugo Perez, MD, an OB/GYN who serves as the maternity unit department chair. “We’re ready to help support moms and their families as they welcome their new baby into the world.” The talented staff uses the latest available technology to treat expecting mothers with care. Among the technology on hand is the Fetal Link software that allows physicians to monitor patients even while the physicians aren’t physically on the unit. Physicians are able to keep a close eye on their patients regardless of the physician’s location, providing yet another layer of comfort for expecting moms and their families. The hospital also has a stateof-the-art pain management program to help expectant moms through labor. The expectant mother has access to nitrous oxide and water immersion, pain relief methods that allow the patient to control when she uses it during labor. Before arriving at the hospital for the birth, Mease Countryside is offers opportunities for expectant parents to get to know what is offered at the hospital and tips on how to care for their little ones. Tours of the birth center are available so that expectant parents can see the private birthing suites and meet members of the labor

and delivery team. There also are classes on child birth, breastfeeding and how to take care of your newborn. There’s even a boot camp for expectant dads that teaches how to survive the first few weeks, support the new mom and more. Parents can also have their car seat inspected for baby’s first ride home. Parents who have alternative birthing plans will find Mease Countryside a welcoming environment. Water immersion births can be performed in the hospital’s birthing pool. “I was so beyond impressed with my first experience (at Mease Countryside) as a doula,” said Taylor Bland, a doula and birth assistant at Trinity Calm Birth Services. “I would happily recommend and attend many more client births here. They followed the birth plan … and the nurses were incredibly kind and reassuring to the parents and it made for a fantastic,

all-natural birth for first-time parents. … If natural birth and parenting is your goal, it is very obtainable here.” Mease Countryside services don’t just stop once the baby is born. Mease Countryside has been recognized as a BabyFriendly Hospital by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), for its efforts to advocate for breastfeeding. The Baby-Friendly Hospital designation is a global effort to implement practices that protect, promote and support breastfeeding. The hospital also received the Care Award from the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA). The Maternity Center at Mease Countryside offers breastfeeding mothers the information, skills and support needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their

babies. Breastfeeding moms can also participate in a support group to help with tips and suggestions. Don’t Eat That Homemade Cookie! Tips For Safe Trick or Treating By Carla Selby With Halloween approaching, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings, and guardians should be mindful of how to keep their little ones safe on the most ghoulish of nights. As a concerned aunt of an adorable 3-yearold nephew that will be trick or treating in the community where my husband and I recently moved in, I wanted to be aware of any special precautions I should take before taking him trick-or-treating. I promise this will not be a long and boring article, just a very short one to give you a few tips to make it a safe and fun evening for all. I did a lot of research online and these were the top 9 tips I found for safe trick-ortreating: First and foremost, make sure your children don’t go trick-or-treating on an empty tummy, otherwise, they would be tempted to snack on treats before their goody bags gets sorted out. Give them a light meal or healthy snack before they head out. 1. Before you leave your house, check out if the area you live in has a sex offender database. This is an obvious one, but just don’t go knocking on a registered offender’s door for candy. If your child is allowed to go out alone or with friends, then make sure they know and understand what an offender is and that they must stay away from that house (even if they have the best decorations of all the houses and are giving out the “best” candy). 2. Use the Buddy System. It seems like common sense, but many kids are telling us

34 OCTOBER 2018

they are walking around by themselves. If your child does not have a group, you need to go with them or find an adult supervisor to accompany them. Many kids say their parents claim they “have” to stay home to give out candy. That’s not a good excuse. Set a time you will walk around with your child, and then come home and give out candy. A win-win to keeping your child safe. While you’re out, remember that the international signal for “no candy” is a porch light turned off. 3. If they are going by themselves or with an older sibling make sure your kids only go to people’s homes you know and trust. We know that a lot of children are allowed to go to every house in their neighborhood… but it’s also important to remember “stranger danger.” If you fear that your children will be tempted to knock on stranger houses, then make sure you’re with them. Of course, not every unknown neighbor out there is dangerous or a registered sex offender, but you should be

safe rather than sorry. The best thing to do for your family is to know your neighbors before it comes time to trick or treat. 4. Make sure your kids know to never ever go into anyone’s house. There are some pretty frightening stories about kids knocking on the door and being told to come inside and get candy. Even if our children may not understand the danger of going into a house, you do. So before your child goes trick or treating, sit down and have a discussion about the rules. 5. Enforce a “Do not eat” rule until they come back home. This is particularly important if you have a little one with any allergies. Check your kids’ candy before they are allowed to eat it. A good rule is that no candy can be eaten before they get home and you can sit down and sort through it. Also, tell your little ones not to accept-and especially not to eat anything that isn’t commercially wrapped. Do not allow them to accept or eat any home-

For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

baked goods he or she may receive, even if those chocolate chip cookies smell great and look spookilicious. 6. Advise your children to avoid petting unfamiliar dogs or puppies. Even though puppies are extremely cute, they still have teeth and may be scared from all the commotion. As a rule, your children should never pet a dog without your permission, the owner’s permission and the dog’s permission. 7. If you’re not going to be with your children, make sure you set up designated times for them to “check-in” with you. Make sure they each have a fully charged cell phone with the ringer volume turned all the way up for them to hear. Texts don’t suffice, make them call you. 8. Walk on the sidewalk if there is one. In neighborhoods with no sidewalk, always walk in the opposite direction of traffic so you can see the cars coming. Otherwise, you might drive the trick or treat trail. If they are walking, especially on the street

and wearing dark costumes, a flashlight is a must. Adhesive reflectors attached to the costume are good too, but even more fun for the kids are glow stick necklaces. 9. Tell your kids not to talk to anyone driving by in a car. Remind them that adults should not be asking kids for help or directions; they should be asking other adults. If approached by an adult stranger, they should report this to a trusted grownup immediately. I’ve never been more excited about Halloween than I am now. I lived over 10 years in a small South Tampa condo and I never received a single knock on my door on Halloween nights from trick or treaters. This year will be our first year celebrating it on a very kid friendly, family-oriented neighborhood, and I may or may not dress up like a zombie myself and go all over the place with my little nephew. Thanks for reading, have a fun and safe Halloween!
