As the name denotes, Thanksgiving is a holiday dedicated to the focus of being Thankful. This time of the year gives us that warm, fuzzy feeling. We have a few days where we feel generally thankful and grateful for the wonderful things in our lives.

our lives.

The Oxford Dictionary defines the work “grateful” as “showing an appreciation of kindness.” This where the difference lies; being thankful is more of a feeling. Being grateful is an action.

Gratitude is what prompts you to pay for a stranger’s meal because you recognize your own financial blessings. Because you see that you can help another person out, which in turns redirects the tone of their day. It’s what prompts you to remind your loved ones how important they are to you. It’s what encourages you at the end of a long, hard day, because you know that it’s actually been a far better day than you’ve made it out to be.

It’s easy for us to look around the Thanksgiving dinner table and say that we are thankful. Family, friends, and food surround us. In that time, we’re currently experiencing that fuzzy feeling that comes with a holiday gathering. We wait for that one time a year in which we can focus on that thankful feeling. But where is the practice of that thankfulness? Thankfulness is the first step. We have to have that initial feeling to build upon, and we build upon it by redirecting our focus onto making gratefulness a steady part of our lives, 365 days a year. But our lives are busy. They distract us from remembering the important things. We get so caught up in our schoolwork, our day job(s), our relationship issues, our bills, and our responsibilities that we forget to shift our perspective on a regular basis. I know that there aren’t many of us who each day dwell on how blessed and lucky we are to have the lives that we do. So how do we actually gain that perspective and keep it all year round? The key is keeping gratitude at the forefront of our lives. It’s not just thinking about how thankful we are to have what we do. It’s about living out that gratitude through the simple things we do every day. When we gear our minds towards focusing on how truly blessed we are, it makes it easier for us to want to bless the other people in

For me, there is no better feeling than that of giving, so I want to take this opportunity to encourage and invite all of you to spread your gratitude with random acts of kindness, no matter how small, and not just during the Holidays but every chance you get. The smallest acts of kindness can make the biggest difference. Last but not least, in the spirit of gratefulness, I would like to use this media to personally thank my mother, Berardina Tedeschi, for her incredible courage, unconditional love, never ending support and impressive emotional AND physical strength. As you may already know, we recently and unexpectedly lost my father, Julio, her husband of over 35 years. Yet somehow, she continues to be the super loving mom, (and grandmother) she’s always been. I do not know how she does it, but her strength is admirable. Somewhere inside of her lies resilience we never thought possible. I want to thank you mom, and dad up there in heaven, for being my biggest reason to feel thankful, not just during the holidays, but every day of my life. Thank you for reading, have a beautiFALL November and Happy Thanksgiving!

Alzheimer’s Disease; The Most Common Form Of Dementia By Phil Sabel, M.A. It is a common misconception that Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia are different words used to describe the same disease, but there are distinct differences between the two. Dementia is a general term used to describe a syndrome, or set of symptoms that chronically co-occur and are severe enough to negatively impact day-to-day life. Dementia commonly includes memory loss, disorientation to time or place, language impairment, inattention, and problems with decision making and planning. Difficulty performing everyday tasks like driving, cooking, balancing a checkbook, and personal hygiene are also present at later stages of dementia.

The symptoms of dementia are caused by diseases that result in progressive damage to brain tissue, such as Parkinson’s, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, hydrocephalus, Huntington’s, and vascular problems such as stroke. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, accounting for 60-80% of all known cases (1). It is currently the

6 NOVEMBER 2017

6th leading cause of death in the United States (2). Despite its prevalence, most of what scientists know about Alzheimer’s has been developed in only the last 20 years of research. Alzheimer’s symptoms typically begin after the age of 65, with less common variants of the disease occurring much earlier. Some degree of forgetfulness and cognitive slowing is inevitable with advancing age (5). Occasionally forgetting the name of a person, the title of a book, or where you put your keys is normal. The type of memory impairment associated with early Alzheimer’s dementia is more significant and characterized by the inability to recall pertinent details of recent conversations, events, or the day of the week. As the disease advances, memory impairment becomes more pronounced, communication deficits may arise, and problems with behavior and mood regulation may emerge. Memory impairment is certainly not unique to Alzheimer’s disease and many

other reversible and chronic conditions may explain memory loss. If memory loss is suspected, it is important to be evaluated by a qualified specialist. The exact causes of Alzheimer’s disease are unknown, but scientists have identified a few key features of the disease process. Sticky plaques comprised of a compound called Amyloid Beta

build up in the spaces between brain cells (6). The plaques interrupt communication between cells, leading to problems with thinking. Alzheimer’s is also characterized by the presence of tau proteins, which form tangles inside brain cells that disrupt critical processes and result in cell death (6).

clinical research is investigating whether new medications are able to modify the disease itself. Researchers have advanced their knowledge of how amyloid plaques attach to brain cells. Scientist are currently investigating medications that may prevent amyloid proteins from clumping together to form plaques. Other medications that may prune amyloid from brain cells are also under development. If these new investigational medications are able to reduce amount amyloid plaques in the brain, it may be possible to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and the associated disabling cognitive impairment.

Cell death is irreversible, reduces overall brain volume, and produces the types of impairment common in Alzheimer’s patients. Although most people develop some plaques and tangles as they age, individuals with Alzheimer’s have far more, with initial deposits distributed primarily in the part of the brain responsible for memory functioning (6). This is why memory impairment tends to be the first identifiable symptom in Alzheimer’s patients. There is no single test used to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. Diagnosing the disease is a complex process that involves collecting a thorough medical history, administering neurocognitive assessments, obtaining laboratory specimens, and performing physical and neurological evaluations. Identifying biomarkers through various Neuroimaging techniques and laboratory tests have become more reliable and are used with greater frequency to aid in the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.

disease through the identification of amyloid plaques was approved by the FDA in 2012 (3). In the past 5 years, several compounds have been developed to help reveal the presence of amyloid and tau plaques in the brains of patients suspected of having Alzheimer’s disease. These neurotracers are injected into the bloodstream and selectively bind to either amyloid or tau proteins and can be visualized during PET brain scans. Amyloid PET scans are not yet widely available to the public. They are a relatively new diagnostic tool, remain very expensive, and tend to be used primarily in clinical research settings. The utility of neuroimaging in the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease is still uncertain, but future advances in the field are expected to allow for earlier detection of the disease.

Neuroimaging is the newest and most encouraging area of research focused on the identification of Alzheimer’s disease. Structural imaging has been in use for many years. The use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) helps identify and track brain shrinkage associated with Alzheimer’s disease. MRI evaluations may also be used to see decreases in the size of brain structures critical to memory functioning. MRIs may one day aid in early diagnosis. However, researchers have not yet agreed on a universal set values to help physicians determine how much brain shrinkage is clinically significant (3).

There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease and it is impossible to stop or reverse the progression of associated cognitive decline. There are a number of behavioral, psychological, and environmental interventions that can help reduce the burden of impairment. Several medications have also been shown to be effective at reducing the symptoms of the disease. The FDA has approved only two types of medications for mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors work by helping to increase the amount of acetylcholine, a chemical in the brain that plays a role in memory, attention, concentration, and motivation (7). The second type of drug prevents cells in the brain from dying as a result of being overstimulated by a brain chemical called glutamate (8).

Amyloid imaging has been the latest development. The first neuroimaging tracer used to evaluate patient’s for Alzheimer’s

Current mediations have been only somewhat effective at reducing the cognitive impairment associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Current

Recent developments in clinical research are allowing researchers and physicians to identify Alzheimer’s disease sooner than ever before. Early diagnosis leads to better treatment options and patient outcomes. Continued advances in Alzheimer’s research can only be made through adequate financial funding and increased participation in clinical research trials. There are currently more than 180 actively enrolling clinical trials and only a small number of volunteers.

Aesthetic Fairy Godmother Spreads Her Wings to South Tampa By Deborah Bostock-Kelley

The aesthetic fairy godmother of Westchase has moved, but fear not, nurse practitioner and resident skincare magician Jenny Molloy is still wielding her wand and making youthful dreams come true at her own brand-new location recently opened August 2017 in South Tampa. With bright white walls, beautiful chandeliers, Celtic tunes softly playing in the background, positive sayings mixed in on shelves with photos of before and after, and products clients can purchase after their beauty treatments, 3 Wishes Aesthetics feels whimsical and welcoming And that’s exactly what Molloy intended. After years sharing space and having a single room in her Westchase location, 3 Wishes Aesthetics at 3415 South Manhattan Avenue is Molloy’s vision alone. “Someone said it’s like stepping into my living room,” she said. Her excitement is palatable as she gives a tour of her recent build out, showing her room and describing the back two offices as future rental

space for an aesthetician, wax, eyebrow or lash technician. To truly separate her from the competition, she even has space for pop-up businesses and seminars. “I have tables and a presentation area, so I can easily seat 12 to 15 for a workshop or a seminar. So far I’ve had two pop-ups and a seminar. Jenny’s artistry tenants of her aesthetics practice remain the same – look well, feel well, live well. In her new home, like her old, she makes people feel and look beautiful through facial rejuvenation. She created the proprietary Happier Smile Lift that literally helps turn the frowning corners of the mouth back up to make the patient look happier. (During the month of November, Jenny is offering the Happier Smile Lift that includes complimentary Botox.) Using the tiniest gauge needle in lieu of a magic wand, her goal to help reverse the aging process. She uses Botox to relax frown lines, forehead lines, and crows’ feet. Last year, an estimated 8 million people worldwide use Botox

injections in their frown lines as a temporary solution to ward off aging. “The lines between the eyes is a focal point. When our eyes are open, we look healthier and feel better about ourselves. Using Botox around the eyes, opens up the eyes and relaxes the features. Botox between the brows opens the eyes and is a home-run,” she explained. “Going to someone who knows how to inject Botox is important and I’ve been injecting since 2004. As a trainer, I pay close attention to everyone’s personal wants, their personal anatomy and tailor the treatment accordingly.” Molloy’s Dermal Fillers lift and plump sagging skin. A very popular request is Juvederm Volbella, a natural looking lip plumper. “It’s the perfect pout,”

she said. Her Microneedling Skin Pen treatment helps to refresh, restore and get skin glowing. Every six to eight weeks, skin cells replace themselves and each time they do, they age a little more. On top of natural aging, there is the sun and environmental exposure that causes further aging. Microneedling makes miniscule micro-channels in the skin that reprogram the cells to act and look younger. The new cells that come in are actually better and healthier. In addition to Botox, dermal fillers and micro-needling, Jenny offers Microcurrent treatment that reduces under eye puffiness, sagging jowls, double chins and droopy eyebrows that

is completely non-invasive. She also provides an array of skin treatments including exfoliating chemical peels to tighten, brighten, and freshen up dull-looking skin and hydrating, anti-aging facials. “As you get older the skins cells designed to slough off don’t and it makes us look dull. Our fine lines and wrinkles show and our makeup sits in it,” she said. “The exfoliating treatment I use is based on the patient’s own skin and skin type. The treatment melts away dead skin cells them off so you look fresh and bright, your skin will be tighter, pores will be smaller, and fine lines and wrinkles will be minimized.”

For more information or to make an appointment, call 813.374-8659 or visit 3wishesaesthetics.com. Molloy will be having regular lunch and learns in the coming months and will post upcoming events on her website. 3 Wishes Aesthetics 3415 S. Manhattan Ave. Tampa, Florida 33629

Molloy is seeing clients in the 21-35 age range seeking pre-juvenation – preventing wrinkles and skin damage from sun exposure. Molloy steers her younger clients towards sun protection and exfoliation and a bit of Botox as needed. “Lip enhancement is popular with this age group.“ I’m happy they come to me as I care for them and will take care of them.” “Professional skincare is a must for everyone. Taking proper care of skin will keep it looking and functioning it’s best and therefore helping to slow typical signs of aging.”
