I cannot believe February is already here! First of all, I hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine’s day! I have some big news for all our South Tampa readers... I am moving to East Lake! After having lived in a small condo in Harbour Island for over a decade, it was time for my husband and I, to buy our first home together. I do wish we could have stayed in South Tampa, but our main offices are located in Tarpon Springs, and the drive there and back was taking a toll on us. We were spending over two hours a day stuck in traffic, and we decided that being close to our workplace and family members was the best option for us. It truly saddens me to be leaving South Tampa. I made so many beautiful memories here, met so many incredible people, attended so many concerts and Lightning games, and ate some of the best meals I have ever had in my life. (Berns, I will still visit you every year on my birthday!) And I will still attend a lot of hockey games, as I am a huge fan of our Tampa Bay Lightning! After over a year of interviewing business owners and local residents in the South Tampa area, I have to say that I learned a lot about this community. Richard Florida, one of the world’s best-known urban theorists, believes that the place we live in is a fundamental contributor to our overall subjective well-being. It makes perfect sense considering the amount of time we spend in our homes and around our neighborhood. And I must admit, that living in this area was truly a joy, and I believe that it contributed to many happy years if of my life. When the Gallup Organization looked at what gives you a high degree of emotional attachment to your neighborhood, the answers were pretty surprising. Obviously, having a low crime rate, great schools and good jobs are important, but there were two

other factors that were really critical. The first was a community that treats all of its residents fairly—ethnic minorities, new immigrants, low-income people, young people, old people, families, entrepreneurs, artists. And then the most important factor was what I call the quality of the neighborhood itself. Does it have trees? Does it have open space? Does it preserve its historic architecture? In other words, does it have some kind of physical beauty? This quality, the aesthetic character, was the number one factor. Which does not really surprise me. In today’s world we worship beauty, so of course, if given the choice, we would prefer to live in a “beautiful” neighborhood… And to me, in all honesty, there is no place more beautiful than South Tampa. This area offers the best of the bay, from hospitals to restaurants, from incredible top rated schools to the best entertainment in town, South Tampa has it all. But let me tell you what I believe makes South Tampa truly beautiful… its people. I have met so many wonderful, kind, supportive and overall positive people in this area, and THAT to me, is more important than being surrounded by perfectly landscaped waterfront mansions. (Which South Tampa also has!) I will still be the Editor of our South Tampa Edition of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles, but I will be writing from a different location. I want to thank you all for your support and readership, I truly appreciate you! yes you! the person reading these lines right now. I hope you enjoy this issue of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles, and as always, thank you for your support!

Carla Selby.

Curry Leaves - Spice Up Your Life! Curry Leaves, located just in front of Westshore Mall on Kennedy, is my go-to Indian restaurant in town and a true hidden gem. I’ve lived in Harbour Island for over a decade, and I luckily get to travel and eat in multiple restaurants across town, but this place is without a doubt my all-time favorite for Indian food. And with over two hundred 5 star reviews online, I guess I am not the only one who feels this way! Wazim Baksh says “This restaurant is a hidden gem in Tampa and I highly recommend it for authentic Indian cuisine.” A Tampa Bay Local Guide, Greg Dee says “This place is a hidden gem. The location will make you second guess yourself. Trust me. Go inside. The food is delicious and the place is clean and nice inside. This is one of Tampa’s best kept secrets.” Happy regular customer, Marlys Leony, has this to say about Curry Leaves “What a hidden jewel of a restaurant! Great tasting Indian dishes with a large buffet variety. The freshest salads! My favorite is the Vegetable Saag and Goan fish curry!! All the servers are great! But Mr Harry is my fav!! Sundays are a great day to try everything on the menu! Especially the naan!” While another 5 star reviewer, Chuck Siegfried could not help to rave about Curry Leaves’ samosas. He says “Unassuming exterior hides exceptional service and food inside. So nice to get both. We had vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals and they were all great. The garlic and basil naan was probably the introductory favorite, and I feel as though I have never eaten a Saomsa before - theirs redefine the category for me. Get to Curry Leaves whenever you want fantastic Indian food!” Saji mathew is the guy we can all thank for bringing this delicious food to our palate! Saji is a perfect example of the local business owner we love to highlight in our magazine. “I’ve always had a passion for really good food and when this space became available next to my gas station convenience store, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to jump on.” Saji explained. Also, very modestly I may add, Saji shared with me that he knows from the outside the place may not look like much, but he wants people to give it a chance. “Come in and enjoy the food and I know you’ll be back! If you’ve never had Indian Cuisine or maybe had an experience with another place being too spicy, don’t worry. We cook everything to order and to your specifications including mild, medium and hot flavors for you to choose from so there’s nothing to fear,” Saji explained.

Fresh food, made to order is the foundation for this restaurant’s success. What they lack in store-front flare, they certainly make up for in taste and at the end of the day, that’s what’s important anyway. How many times have we paid ridiculous prices for lackluster food just because the view was nice or the building cost was in the millions of dollars? I know I have experienced my fair share of that since I moved to South Tampa back in 2005. I’ll take that hole in the wall feel with excellent food any day! or in this case, a humble little Indian restaurant in an inconspicuous location. I don’t want to take anything away from the inside of the restaurant though because it’s very nicely renovated! The chef of Curry leaves formerly worked at luxurious 5 star hotels and restaurants in India. The minute you try any of their dishes you will taste the difference that having a talented and famous cook makes. From the very first time I visited Curry Leaves I knew Saji had someone very special back there cooking all these flavorful and succulent dishes!

The Cuisine Curry Leaves is one of the few Indian restaurants that offer Northern and Southern India influenced foods. Many Indian Restaurants do not serve any beef whatsoever, but Curry Leaves bends the rules on this one and offers tantalizing creations of Lamb, Goat and Beef. One of my favorite dishes at Curry Leaves has to be the Chicken Tikka Masala! This tender, juicy chicken tikka in a creamy and delicious tomato based sauce is likely the most popular entrée on the menu. The oven cooked Chicken Tikka is fantastic by itself and definitely worth a try! Of course, the Chicken Tandoori, marinated in Yogurt and seasoned with spices, cooked in the traditional tandoor oven, is absolutely perfect and highly recommended by all who have sampled this mouth watering, flavorful meal! Curry Leaves also offers a splendid all you can eat Lunch Buffet! Served daily from 11am-2:30pm and for only $10.99! Showcasing multiple vegetarian and non-vegetarian options and the most delicious curry goat in the city. Curry leaves is located at 4843 W Kennedy Blvd Tampa, FL 33609 Hours 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM and 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM Call to 813-319-4014 to make a reservation. Volbella Lips - Plump Up Your Lips, Safely!

You want your lips to look fuller, but you don’t want anyone to know that you use dermal fillers. Well, here’s some great news: With Juvederm Volbella for lips, you can have your cake and eat it too. Are you concerned about the appearance of your lips? Perhaps you’re worried about them thinning as you age, or maybe you’ve always wanted fuller lips but were afraid that if you got an injectable treatment, they would end up looking fake or way too big. If you want to improve the way they look with little risk, now is the perfect time to head over to 3 Wishes Aesthetics and try Juvederm Volbella for lips. (FDA Approved.) This injectable temporary hyaluronic filler is available for use by patients who are aged 21 and over.

What Makes Juvederm Volbella Different? This dermal filler is formulated to have a smooth, uniform consistency.

Thanks to the proprietary Vycross technology that goes into its design, Juvederm Volbella contains less hyaluronic acid than other fillers. As a result, swelling is much less of an issue and outcomes look far more natural for patients who don’t respond well to other fillers. Juvederm Volbella for lips effectively counteracts the signs of aging that are most closely associated with the lips and mouth. Specially formulated hyaluronic acid molecules fill and plump targeted areas. The proprietary technology that is used in this dermal filler ensures subtle, natural results.

Prepare to be Wowed by Tampa’s Premier Show Ski Team By Marcy Sanford

Looking for something fun and different to do with friends and family? Check out the Tampa Bay Water Ski Show Team. Every Saturday from March 17 through the end of October they’ll be delighting audiences with their impressive ski shows reminiscent of ones you would have seen at Cypress Gardens. The Tampa Bay Water Ski Show Team (TBWSST) has some of the best show skiers in the world on the team, with members having won awards at the Regional and National levels. They have even set world records, including the seven-man front flip over a regulation 14-foot wide jump and the World’s Largest Human Pyramid. In fact many of their skiers have gone on to ski professionally at places like Cypress Gardens, Sea World, LegoLand and the Wisconsin Dells. “We are a competitive show ski team,” said TBWSST member Lisa Stephens. “We compete in the Southern Regional Show Ski Championships and at one time, won the top title for 13 years in a row.” Having placed second for the past two years, the team is back on the water this season with some pretty amazing acts they hope will put them back in first place when they compete in June. Each week this talented group of skiers presents a new themed show for audiences to enjoy which also serves as a chance for them to show off their skills and hone their performances for championship time. In addition to incredible skiing, the team is decked out in costumes and make-up and performs to music to suit the theme. Kids and adults of all

10 February 2018

ages will be wowed by the weekly performances. It takes more than 100 volunteers to pull off the professional shows each week and Lisa says this is one of the reasons that so many families become involved with the group and continue to come back year after year. “It is a great family activity. There is something for everyone to do whether you ski or not. We have volunteers who run concessions, make costumes, work the sound board and help in all different ways.” Lisa says there are young adults who started with the team when they were elementary age as well as families with members from several different generations. Several support members who were once skiers in the show now have duties off the water that help things run smoothly. Lisa offers another example of how skiing is truly a family affair, “Twelveyear-old C.J. Welch learned to barefoot last season. Younger brother, Gavin, is a member as well. Their mom, Shannon, grew up on the team and she and her husband, Ryan, were both skiers at Cypress Gardens. Ryan’s parents skied with Cypress Gardens as well and Shannon’s parents are both active support members of our Tampa team.” Amazingly all shows are free to the public. TBWSST is a non-profit organization dedicated to the sport of show skiing and they do accept donations – all of which go towards costumes, boat maintenance and gas and other items necessary to put on the weekly performances. The atmosphere at the family friendly shows is festive and yet laidback. There are bleachers to sit on

or you can bring your own chair or blanket. Concessions are for sell but you are welcome to bring a picnic basket or cooler. If you are interested in learning how to ski or improving your skills, TBWSST offers clinics by appointment for beginners to advanced skiers. Lisa also encourages anyone who already knows how to ski and is interested in competitive show skiing to think about joining the team. “It has been a wonderful experience for my family,” she said. “Our kids

have worked on a team with people of all ages from preschoolers to seniors. They have learned leadership responsibilities and the importance of preparations behind the scenes. It has taught them sportsmanship and it is something the whole family can participate in. There are lots of opportunities off the water as well as on.” The Tampa Bay Water Ski Show Team performs at Tower Lake in Oldsmar at 130 Burbank Road. Shows are every Saturday at 6 p.m. (weather

permitting) with a pre-show featuring beginner skiers starting at 5:30. Shows are free and open to the public. The first show of the 2018 season will be a St. Patrick Day Show on March 17. Be sure to wear your green.

What if I told you the “good guys” from the “good ol’ days” still exist? We’re talking about the blue collar guys that treat you and your family as they would treat their own. At times, it seems like a thing of the past. If you spend five minutes online you’ll find negative reviews on many plumbing companies in the area. In today’s economy it’s tougher than ever to find honest, hard, fair work but we’ve found it. We found a company who will work hard for you and your family to fix any and all of your plumbing and/or septic problems. Most importantly, they’re a reputable and licensed company. I’m talking about Tampa Bay Plumbers! Owner Ryan Pelky demands excellence from everyone on his team. “I take personal responsibility for every job no matter how big or small,” says Pelky. “This company obsesses over quality and our customer experience. I can promise you this…if you’re not happy with something we did for you, I will make it right. Go ahead and look them up next time you’re online and you’ll find glowing reviews from tons of satisfied local customers. You’ll find an Angie’s List Super Service Award, an almost 5 star review on Facebook (you can’t please everyone), an A+ rating on the Better Business Bureau, and an almost 5-star rating on just about every review site on the net including google which they boast a 4.8 out of 5 rating! That’s no easy task especially when you have competitors constantly hiring other people to fake bad reviews online. It’s a sad world we live in but it’s a reality that

not enough people know about. I guess what I’m saying is, even if you don’t take my word for it, you can trust the reviews of countless more people. I put my trust for all my personal and business plumbing and septic needs in the hands of Tampa Bay Plumbers; in fact, one of my best friends in the world, Ryan Penna, plays a paramount role within the company as their production manager. I trust Ryan and after hearing him talk so highly about the company he works for I knew I wouldn’t regret hiring them. Tampa Bay Plumbers will be working on a model home I’m building personally here in Tampa very soon. As Mr. Pelky says himself, there’s no job too big or too small. Sometimes the small stuff is the most inconvenient – leaky toilets, clogged drains (because your kids are brilliant and decided their toys wanted to go swimming in things they shouldn’t), garbage disposal repair, superficial leaks and bursts all the way through septic repair and maintenance, and trenchless repairs. Ryan Penna and I sat down and I asked Ryan Pelky what he thinks sets Tampa Bay Plumbers apart from others in the industry. He said, “First off, we have over 25 years of experience locally here in Tampa dating back to before we were Tampa Bay Plumbers. Much of our crew has been a constant over the past decade and our guys have the experience that others simply don’t have. Many others don’t even operate with the proper licensing. We do plenty of residential but

also have very large commercial jobs that other, smaller companies would never tackle or be trusted with so we have the man power to get the job done. We have the most technologically advanced plumbing tools and equipment available. We treat every plumbing project like an emergency and never sacrifice quality. Our 24/7 availability definitely is a huge selling point for us and we never charge an overage rate for Saturday or Sunday work like many others in our industry under normal circumstances. We are true work-o-holics from our owners all the way down to our entry level positions.” Let’s talk about backing up what you sell.
