March is one of my favorite Months of the year for many reasons! One being that we get to celebrate St. Patrick’s day on March 17, and immediately after, us Christians / Catholics, get to observe Easter. While the dates for Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Halloween are fixed, Easter can fall any time between March 22 and April 25. When is Easter 2018 and how is the date decided?
General Manager
This year’s Easter takes place from Good Friday on March 30 until Easter Monday on April 2 - making Easter Sunday on April 1, which is also… April Fool’s Day! Funny coincidence isn’t it? I can just imagine the jokes and pranks this year.

So how is the Easter date decided?
The death of Jesus occurred around the Jewish Passover, which is traditionally held on first full moon following the vernal equinox. As the full moon varies in each time zone, the Church said that they would use the 14th day of the lunar month instead - The Paschal Full Moon - and decided to host Easter Day on the following Sunday. So once that date is fully determined, then Easter Day and the Easter Holidays can be determined. Us Christians celebrate Easter on a Sunday as it was the day Jesus Christ, our savior, rose from the dead, following his crucifixion on a Friday, two days before. Many, many centuries ago in 325, it was determined by a council of Christian Bishops that Easter Day should always be on a Sunday to commemorate the happy occasion. So what is the meaning behind it and why do we celebrate with chocolate easter eggs and bunnies? Seems a little odd doesn’t it? Let me elaborate a little. During this time of the year we see many stores being decorated with Easter eggs, chocolate bunnies and baby chicks. But Why? While many will be at least vaguely familiar with the story of Easter, its relation to eating mountains of chocolate eggs is less clear. Like I mentioned earlier, Easter celebrates the resurrection of our Lord. Even before the birth of Christianity, the egg was seen as a symbol of Spring, a celebration of rebirth and reinvigoration after the harshness of winter. That’s why the Mesopotamians - an ancient Christian community living in an area roughly covered today by Iraq, Syria and Kuwait - used to stain eggs red to symbolize the blood of Christ. Eggs would then be cracked against one another, leaving just the empty shells - a symbol of the empty tomb Jesus left behind. Interesting huh?
The tradition survives today in the shape of egg rolling, representing the rolling away of the rock from Jesus’ tomb. Over time, Easter eggs became more and more elaborately decorated, perhaps most famously by Russian jeweler Peter Carl Faberge, creator of the priceless Faberge eggs as Easter gifts for Tsars Alexander III and Nicholas II. The introduction of chocolate eggs is a relatively new phenomenon, which originated in France and Germany in the 19th century. And as everyone loves chocolate, the chocolate production of Easter eggs exploded and became more popular all over the world, making Easter another “marketable” Holiday. Nowadays Easter is a big deal commercially - retailers and manufacturers love to get in on the Holiday and persuade us to buy easter baskets, easter eggs, cards, and anything depicting bunnies. So we now understand the eggs, but why Bunnies? We can thank the Germans for the Easter Bunny! Originally an ‘Easter hare,’ a buck-toothed bringer of chocolate to the kids that behaved well was first mentioned in German literature in 1682. The tradition stuck, and left to the Easter bunnies you see on the shelves today as well as the exception for a delivery of Easter eggs on the day. I hope this little Easter editorial helped shed some light on the chocolate eggs and Easter Bunny mystery. I personally love creating easter baskets with all kinds of goodies and giving them away to my little nephews, nieces and cousins. I also enjoy painting and decorating Easter eggs. This is an awesome activity to do with the little ones and something adults can also have fun doing. By the way, painting eggs with food coloring can be fun, but this year, you may want to try something new. I suggest using watercolors, as your little Easter eggs will definitely look like true works of art. (Some watercolors and dyes may contain lead, so please do not eat them, just enjoy their beauty and then discard them.) Whether you are Christian or not, celebrating Easter is a wonderful family tradition. I hope you and your loved ones have a wonderful one! As always, thank you for your support and readership.

Dr. Christine Grant - A Smile Speaks A Million Languages
By Carla Selby
There are hundreds of languages in the world, but a smile speaks them all. Let Dr. Grant help you create a beautiful and natural smile that will speak for itself by uniting her dental craft with her love for the art and science of dentistry. Dentistry has evolved over a period of many centuries, evolving from a trade to a recognized profession that has increased the quality of life for many people. Only a true professional like Dr. Grant can perform masterful dentistry with such effortless grace. This natural elegance comes through her sheer passion and drive for helping her patients attain a beautiful and healthy smile and thereby radiating confidence. Christine Grant, DMD, PA opened her dental practice in 1999, and has been at the same location, 1407 W. Swann Avenue ever since. Located in the center of HydePark’s upscale shops and restaurants, many of her patients are within walking distance. A native Floridian, Dr. Grant grew up in Sarasota, where she showed an early interest in the arts and sciences, studying classical piano and taking art classes at the Ringling Museum of Art. After completing a Bachelor’s in Biology from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Grant went on to earn her Doctorate in Dental Medicine from the University of Florida. Furthering her education, she obtained her Certificate in Advanced Aesthetic General Dentistry from Baylor College of Dentistry in Texas. Dr. Grant’s love for the arts and sciences continues today in her dental practice. She applies her knowledge and skills to the daily dental treatment of her patients. The art and science of dentistry involves replacing natural tooth structure-enamel and dentin, with crowns fabricated from man-made materials with machine-generated cores in combination with the artistry and scientific knowledge of Dr. Christine Grant. Dr. Grant utilizes the latest technological advancements with her lab ceramist in designing the ideal crowns for her patients. In particular, the CAD-CAM machine uses 3D photography (computeraided design) and milling machine (computer-aided manufacturing) to fabricate biocompatible, metal-free crowns that possess an accurate fit. Patients are happy with the superiority of Dr.Grant’s crowns uniting strength and natural beauty. Dr. Grant utilizes state-of-the-art esthetic materials in the fabrication of her crowns including Zirconia (ceramic) crowns and E-max (glass-ceramic) crowns. Zirconia crowns are known for their strength and beauty, which makes them able to withstand chipping and fractures. This is the ideal restoration for patients who have a history of fractured teeth, fractured fillings/crowns or grinding habits. These patients require a crown that is stronger and will resist day-to-day grinding habits. Traditional crowns on these patients would break and not last as long as Zirconia crowns. For patients with complex aesthetic demands, E.Max crowns are the ideal choice. These crowns display a high degree of translucency and natural, tooth-like aesthetics. These crowns are for patients that have a normal bite and desire strength but emphasize more natural beauty. Dr. Grant has embraced this new and exciting age of revolutionary materials in the fabrication of her crowns, implant crowns, veneers and bridges. “During my exam, Dr. Grant pointed out my need for a crown but could see I was reluctant. Dr. Grant and her assistant Margo sat down with me explaining all the details, including showing me numerous pictures of other crowns she had performed. They all looked great so I decided to have the crown done and I am extremely happy with the results,” says Ilona. “Dr. Grant was a fresh and wonderful experience for me because of several bad experiences with other dentists in the past. Dr. Grant and all of the office staff are friendly and polite. I will definitely return to this office for all my dental needs.” For patients that can’t save their teeth, there is an excellent and innovative alternative. Dental Implants are the ideal modality of treatment for missing teeth. Not only does Dr. Grant use advanced technology in the fabrication of her crowns but, also in the diagnosis and placement of Dental Implants. Sometimes teeth are lost due to severe infection or fractured roots. In collaboration with

her specialists, Dr. Grant incorporates the advanced CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) 3D imaging system. It allows us to see parts of the mouth traditional x-rays don’t. It helps in the diagnosis of teeth that can’t be saved and the precise placement of Implants. Dr. Grant utilizes this advanced technology to diagnose dental problems early on and offer her patients unique treatment options to avoid the progression of dental disease. In the past, we had to wait until the patient presented with symptoms of pain and discomfort before discovering a fractured tooth. Now with the advent of the CBCT machine, we can identify fractured roots much earlier and offer treatment much quicker. “Dr. Grant took a lot of care to take me through a variety of options in fixing a dark tooth in the front of my mouth. She and her assistant Margo took me through all the possibilities and found the best thing I could do for my age and budget and we made a great plan going forward,” says Katie. “She explained all the treatments (which can be daunting) in a way that made it seem easy and less scary. She gave me all the details to make an informed decision while still letting me feel very relaxed. Her technology is the most up-to-date and her staff cannot be beat! The best hygienist I’ve ever had is Sandy and her front office staff Barbara and Kaye are a pleasure to work with.” Dr. Grant attends a lot of continuing education classes to study what’s new and changing in dentistry. A new hot topic is “Biometric Dentistry”. The new age of biometric (life-like) dental materials are being engineered to emulate the

From left to right; Margo, Barbara, Dr. Grant and Sandy. optical, mechanical and biological characteristics of natural teeth. Dr. Grant states: “The majority of crowns look artificial and fake. Patients coming to me for the first time complain their current crowns show a visible metal margin or black line along the gumline. They complain the color of their crowns look uniform and not natural. My goal is to replicate the aesthetics and function of my patient’s naturally occurring tooth structure. This involves studying the optical properties of tooth enamel and dentin and how they pertain to the study of light (electromagnetic radiation) and their interaction with various dental materials”. The goal is to fabricate crowns that emulate her patient’s natural teeth. Dr. Grant studies and incorporates the following optical properties in the design work of her crowns; (1) Hue- color (2) Value- brightness level (3) Chroma- intensity of the color (4) Translucency- amount of light that transmits through a materials (5) Opacity- lack of light transmitting through materials. For example, when evaluating optical properties between a Zirconia crown versus an E-max crown; Zirconia crowns are more opaque (less transparent) and E-Max crowns are more translucent (more see through). Dr. Grant adds: “ I gain my greatest satisfaction and pleasure from knowing I’ve done a superb job when a patient asks me to show them which tooth in their mouth has the crown on it. I always get a kick out of that.” Dr. Grant - A True Master Artist of Dentistry Dr. Grant draws her inspiration and creativity from studying art. Most recently, Dr. Grant and her mother traveled to Europe and visited several countries, including; Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands. Some of the artists she most enjoyed were Marc Chagall (Painter) and Alberto Giacometti (Sculptor.) Dr. Grant not only viewed many paintings from Chagall in the Zurich Art Museum but, was fortunate enough to see his stained-glass windows in a local church (Fraumunster.) Chagall is known for his use of light and color in his artwork. Dr. Grant was also able to view some of Giacometti’s renowned 20th century sculptures. He is associated with Modernism and philosophical questions about the human condition. Like these famous artists, Dr. Grant incorporates light and color in the design of her patient’s teeth. Sculpture plays a fundamental role in the anatomy of a tooth and its relationship to other teeth and facial features. Dr. Grant seeks to blend the symmetry of your facial features to create your ideal smile. With a grand smile, Dr. Grant says, “Like art, there is a harmonious relationship between your facial features and your individual teeth in the composition of a smile and that’s why a smile speaks a million languages!” Dr. Grant also visited the Straumann Implant Center, headquartered in Basel, Switzerland. Dr. Grant is very fond of Straumann Implants and Crowns due to their Swiss Precision manufacturing and accuracy of fit. Dr. Grant prides herself on using only those products that are known for excellence, innovation and quality. “My happiest patients are those that have replaced missing teeth with

Patients benefit both from the science and technology of Implants (placed below the gums) added with the art and optical properties of crowns (placed above the gums). “My patients are amazed that their Implants and Crowns feel and look like their original teeth and as a result I can see transformations in their personal lives. Patients that were once shy and reserved have grown more outgoing and confident.” While in Basel, Switzerland, Dr. Grant visited the Art Museum Basel. They host the world’s largest contemporary art fair; “Art Basel,” which is celebrated annually in 3 countries: Basel, Switzerland, Hong Kong, China and Miami, USA. Many art enthusiasts from the Tampa Bay area attend the Miami art show every December, including Dr. Grant. This art show highlights masters of modern contemporary art. Dr. Grant viewed many works of art from famous artists such as; Picasso, Dali, Rembrandt and Rodin. It is from these famous works of art Dr. Grant derives her passion and inspiration to scientifically and artistically custom design her patient’s individual Dental Masterpieces. Call Dr. Christine Grant today “To Design a Smile Worth Framing!” She will artistically paint and scientifically sculpt your teeth to a perfect masterpiece. Oh Snap! Pics in the Glenn is making magic again.
By Michelle Naktin
When you ask people what possessions they would rescue from their burning house, one of the most frequent answers is the photograph album or a computer with their digital images. We like to preserve the important events and people in our lives. The ceremonies of birth and birthdays, marriages and anniversaries, holidays and new houses are all recorded because they matter. For Glenn Nielsen, professional photographer and owner of Pics in the Glenn, is all about the story. Photographs are our personal story, a timeline of our lives filled with faces and places that we love and capturing these precious moments is what Glenn truly enjoys to do. Unlike any other visual image, a photograph is not a rendering, an imitation or an interpretation of its subject, but actually a perfect trace of it. No painting or drawing, no matter how naturalistic it may seem, can depict a priceless moment in time the way that a photograph does. And nobody can capture these moments, better than Glenn. Glenn was lucky to develop his love for photography at a young age. “I grew up on a farm, we were really, really dirt poor,” says Glenn. “My dad had a camera but we didn’t take many pictures. When I was a teenager he gave me a black and white
10 March 2018
box camera and I would take pictures and send the film off, and 2 or 3 weeks later they would come back, and hopefully they looked good.” The thrill of capturing images stayed with Glenn during his academic and professional development. For him, the camera has always been his favorite tool to tell a story. After high school Glenn received a Senatorial Appointment to the Air Force Academy, and when he graduated in 1970, Glenn went on to Pilot Training in San Antonio, TX. His first assignment as a pilot was in Tampa, FL as a student learning how to fly the F-4 Phantom II. In March 1972, Glenn was relocated and assigned to an airbase in Thailand, from which as a young lieutenant, flew 200 combat missions in the Vietnam War. As the war wound down, he was reassigned to Okinawa where he split his time between there and Taiwan until he returned back to Tampa as an Instructor Pilot in 1975. As a newly transitioned civilian, Glenn managed the Tech Data Center for GTE which became Verizon. He traveled throughout the Verizon footprint working with his customers, installing programs, troubleshooting computer equipment and planning future developments. After almost two decades in the Tech workforce, Glenn decided to take an early retirement and began focusing
on his true passion... photography. The transition from his corporate career to the world of photography has been a major life-changing event for Glenn. He had been taking photos, as well as developing and printing them since 1972, but now he was going to turn this into his third career. There was definitely a lot to learn about the challenging photography industry, from the technical aspects to to knowing how to deal with even the most demanding of customers. The biggest challenge is to capture the emotion between two or more people that tears your heart out when you look at the image. Glenn has succeeded in this challenge multiple times. “Taking pictures has become my way of life and nothing has made me feel so complete,” says Glenn. He loves the instant gratification that photography offers. He knows immediately if he has captured the moment. Getting from “not quite right” to “absolutely perfect” is his job and one he takes very seriously. What Glenn can tell you is that he really loves what he does and he spends a lot of time refining, perfecting and even obsessing over his work... For Glenn Nielsen “Photography is a passion, not a job.” Glenn spent a lot of time reflecting on things such as what is his “style” of photography. “Style comes with time and
is a difficult thing to force,” says Glenn. “More important than style, is being aware of the literal nature of the image, and striving to go beyond that in an aesthetic sense in order to create a truly captivating image.” People and human interaction fascinate Glenn. What is said with their eyes, the emotion behind a gesture, their conversations – and photography gives him the opportunity to observe and capture all of it. “I love being a photographer, I love people. I love

photographing people. That’s what makes it all worthwhile.” Glenn specializes in professional portraits, headshots, family and group photographs, and his extremely popular “Tampa Beginnings.” Imagine a breathtaking album to celebrate a mother and her baby…from the beginning stages of the pregnancy (the baby “bump”) and monthly progression pictures right up until delivery. Expecting mothers will be amazed to see how much change occurs on a monthly basis. This progress is followed by milestone pictures capturing the baby as a newborn and then again at 3, 6 and 9 months, followed by a 1st birthday party session. Glenn’s unique “Tampa Beginnings” will make sure the mother’s pregnancy and the ever so precious first year of that baby’s life is preserved for them to cherish and value forever. “It is an 18-month journey that we take together,” says Glenn. “I get to tell the greatest story ever told, and mom gets a custom designed, multi-generational, high quality album that will tell this story over and over again for over 100 years.” Smartphone Photos Vs. Professional Photos
In this day and age, everyone has a cellphone with a camera of some sort. People are taking selfies and pictures of everything and everyone. Glenn feels that people need to overcome the mindset that a cellphone picture is good enough. “There is a clear difference between a cellphone picture and a professional image,” says Glenn. “Anyone can see the difference immediately. There is nothing that shows how much you love your
family more than a professional portrait that every visitor to your home can see and admire.” Fully committed to the world of photography and his community, Glenn serves as a member of the Board of Directors and immediate past president of the Tampa Area Professional Photographers Association (TAPPA). He is the Chairman of the Military Affairs Committee of the South Tampa Chamber of Commerce. Once a month, he provides headshots for military members and their spouses who are transitioning into the civilian world at no cost. Glenn volunteers in many of the activities of the South Tampa Chamber. He donates his time to local churches, Shriners fund raising, and Project Transition USA. He offers his skills to numerous community charities assisting in all of their fundraising needs. The passion and dedication Glenn has with his clients helps him build long lasting relationships. Let Glenn assist you in capturing breath-taking images that will endlessly preserve all of your special memories. “I grew up with the value of a man’s handshake and delivering what was promised. I am genuine all the way through. I guarantee my work,” states Glenn confidently. “You will like your product or you don’t pay. Most importantly, I work to earn your friendship and respect.” At the core of his art, Glenn is committed to crafting artistic and timeless imagery for every client. ‘There are few limits to what we can do!” Contact Pics in the Glenn today! 813540-4200.
