From The Editor Carla Selby As the name denotes, Thanksgiving is a holiday dedicated to the focus of being Thankful. This time of the year gives us that warm, fuzzy feeling. We have a few days where we feel generally thankful and grateful for the wonderful things in our lives. The Oxford Dictionary defines the work "grateful" as "showing an appreciation of kindness." This where the difference lies; being thankful is more of a feeling. Being grateful is an action. It's easy for us to look around the Thanksgiving dinner table and say that we are thankful. Family, friends, and food surround us. In that time, we're currently experiencing that fuzzy feeling that comes with a holiday gathering. We wait for that one time a year in which we can focus on that thankful feeling. But where is the practice of that thankfulness? Thankfulness is the first step. We have to have that initial feeling to build upon, and we build upon it by redirecting our focus onto making gratefulness a steady part of our lives, 365 days a year. But our lives are busy. They distract us from remembering the

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

important things. We get so caught up in our schoolwork, our day job(s), our relationship issues, our bills, and our responsibilities that we forget to shift our perspective on a regular basis. I know that there aren't many of us who each day dwell on how blessed and lucky we are to have the lives that we do. So how do we actually gain that perspective and keep it all year round? The key is keeping gratitude at the forefront of our lives. It's not just thinking about how thankful we are to have what we do. It's about living out that gratitude through the simple things we do every day. When we gear our minds towards focusing on how truly blessed we are, it makes it easier for us to want to bless the other people in our lives. Gratitude is what prompts you to pay for a stranger's meal because you recognize your own financial blessings. Because you see that you can help another person out, which in turns redirects the tone of their day. It's what prompts you to remind your loved ones how important they are to you. It's what encourages you at the end of a long, hard day, because you know

that it's actually been a far better day than you've made it out to be. For me, there is no better feeling than that of giving, so I want to take this opportunity to encourage and invite all of you to spread your gratitude with random acts of kindness, no matter how small, and not just during the Holidays but every chance you get. The smallest acts of kindness can make the biggest difference. Last but not least, in the spirit of gratefulness, I would like to use this media to personally thank my mother, Berardina Tedeschi, for her incredible courage, unconditional love, never ending support and impressive emotional AND physical strength. We recently and unexpectedly lost my father, Julio, her husband of over 35 years. Yet somehow, she continues to be the super loving mom, (and grandmother) she’s always been. I do not know how she does it, but her strength is admirable. Somewhere inside of her lies resilience we never thought possible. I want to thank you mom, and dad up there in heaven, for being my biggest reason to feel thankful, not just during the holidays, but every day of my life. Thank you for reading, have a wonderful November.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Tony Dungy / Bobby Bowden / Tom Landry / Sue Semrau - these are but a few of the 80 or so legendary coaches in America who are a part of the “Hall of Champions” at FCA headquarters in Kansas City. These are coaches who have impacted the lives of athletes in the areas of character, integrity, leadership, and even for eternity, for most of their careers. And these are coaches who’ve been a part of FCA for over 30 years. On December 8th FCA will host the 2nd Annual Pasco County AllStar Football Game. The best of the East vs. the best of the West. Last year 2,000 fans packed Sunlake Stadium for the inaugural all-star game and this year promises to be even bigger! Every public High School in the County and two private schools will participate. Head coaches from each school held a “draft day” where they selected the best senior players from each school. The county-wide battle for bragging rights will be held again at Sunlake Stadium, Thursday Dec. 8, at 7:00pm. Tickets are available at any participating school, or online at pascofootball.eventbrite.com, or at

6

ticket gate the day of game. Fans are strongly encouraged to get tickets prior to game to avoid lines at gate on game day. FCA is a non-profit sports-based ministry that seeks to impact the lives of coaches and athletes, and all whom they influence, for Jesus Christ. There are FCA chapters in all 50 states in the U.S., and in 54 countries around the world. Locally, there are chapters in 101 “huddles” in the Tampa Bay area, which include Middle Schools, High Schools and Colleges. The ministry can be best described with the Four C’s: Coaches, Campus, Camps and Community. Coaches – Coaches are FCA’s initial impact each year. Young people may not respect authority like they used to, but they will still respect “coach.” Billy Graham said, “a coach will impact more people in one year than most people do in a lifetime.” So we try to influence the influencers. The second “C” is for Campus. With a presence on most High Schools and many Middle Schools in Tampa Bay, we reach thousands of students on our campuses. The school meetings are student initiated and student led. This

gives the students who choose to be a part of our club an opportunity to grow and stretch in areas such as leadership, public speaking, preparation and other life skills. Students who come through the FCA ministry as leaders can put this body of work on their resume as they begin searching for colleges or careers. It’s important to know that while FCA has “athletes” in our name, that students don’t have to be athletes or a part of a sports team to be a part of our club. We seek to reach all students at all schools. Next is “Camps” - FCA has hundreds of camps around the country each year. These camps range from “all student” camps, leadership camps, and virtually the different sports-specific camps. Locally we offer a full week of camp at Southeastern University in Lakeland. Students from all across southwest Florida meet at SEU for a full week of perspiration, inspiration and transformation. They come back fired up and ready to make a difference in their schools and with their friends. The final “C” is Community. FCA partners with businesses, churches, parents and volunteers to organize several events each year that impact the community. Some of the events we’ll do

NOVEMBER 2017

are golf tournaments, cornhole tournaments, sporting clay shoots, and all-star football games, where a much broader audience is reached. Areas of need within FCA are for volunteers, speakers, monthly financial partners and board members. If you have any interest in serving in any of these areas, we would greatly appreciate an opportunity to talk with you. Area Director Bob Durham can be reached at (813) 784-4410 or bdurham@fca.org

Tech Talk: SSD’s Increase Computer Speed By Bob Dalles Greetings! Would you like your computer to run faster? Of course… who wouldn’t right? Computer users who desire faster systems will typically invest more money into buying faster processors and adding more memory to their computers. Traditionally, this has been the most common way to achieve increased efficiency. However, there is another option that gets overlooked mainly because most computer users are unaware of it. That option is installing a Solid State Drive (SSD) into the computer. The programs and data files you regularly use are saved on your computer’s Hard Disk Drive (HDD). A hard disk drive consists of moving parts and electronic circuits. HDDs have been the mainstay of a computer’s fastest storage device for decades. SSDs also save program and data files, but they only contain electronics. Since there are no moving parts in a SSD it can read and write files much more quickly than a HDD, in so doing significantly enhancing computer performance. Different types of solid state storage

notebook computer users. Fourth, consuming less energy results in generating less heat. Keeping a computer cooler improves its performance and life. Fifth, no moving parts means that SSDs are lighter and more durable which is another great benefit for notebook computer users on the go. HDDs are still less expensive than SSDs when you compare them strictly by the amount of information they can store. However, notebook and desktop computer users have found that the performance of SSDs outweigh the price difference. Now, some SSDs can be purchased for less than $100.00 making this technology more affordable.

devices have actually been around for decades, but their use as a permanent storage device was not a feasible option basically due to their extremely high cost. HDDs have provided acceptable storage and speed when compared to the cost of SDDs. But just like everything else in the computer industry, prices are coming down and upgrading to SSDs is becoming more affordable for the computer user’s

pocketbook. By eliminating the moving parts, Solid State Drives offer many advantages over typical Hard Disk Drives. First, SSDs are faster because they are all electronics. Second, no moving parts means no noise or vibration that is inherent in HDDs. Third, no moving parts also means SSDs consume less energy than HDDs. A major consideration regarding battery life for

A leader in kitchen and bathroom renovation for more than a decade, the expansion will include bathroom suite and barn door displays. “While we’ve always specialized in bathroom cabinets and countertops, we are now able to offer complete bathroom remodeling,” says Personal Touch owner and designer Cheryl Colvin. “We’ve also had a lot of requests for the rustic farm house design and will now be able to install custom-made barn doors and farmhouse furniture.” Cheryl says they can even make a barn house door that swings open instead of sliding making it a perfect choice for a pantry door or anywhere with limited wall space. You probably spend a lot of time in your kitchen and bathroom. It

should be a room you love. If you’ve found yourself dreaming of a new showcase kitchen where friends and family will gather or a spa-like bathroom where you can relax at the end of the day, Personal Touch Kitchens & Bathrooms can help. and she uses her experience and knowledge to make her clients’ renovation dreams a reality. Additionally, designer Kimberly McMann has more than 14 years of kitchen design experience. Cheryl and Kimberly have seen many trends and styles come and go but one recent trend they agree will stand the test of time – is more efficient use of storage space. “We cook and we understand that a kitchen needs to be not just beautiful but also functional,” says Cheryl, “especially in smaller kitchens where you have a limited number of cabinets, you need to make sure that all those cabinets work.” Cheryl says there are many advances in cabinet and drawer storage that make staying organized easier and keep you from having to crawl around on your hands and knees looking for the pasta pot that’s wedged in the back. There are even new design options for those seemingly useless

corner cabinets that you’ll love, like pull out shelves, corner drawers and a new “Super Susan” design that puts the lazy Susan to shame.

With Personal Touch Kitchens & Bathrooms a new kitchen or bathroom is as easy as 1 – 2 – 3. Step 1 – Choose your cabinets. You can find any style of cabinet that you like in every conceivable color or stain at Personal Touch Kitchens & Bathrooms. Most of the lines are made in the U.S.A. and all come with a lifetime warranty. Cheryl says that shades of white and grey are still very popular but she’s even had one client who wanted a sunshiny, bright yellow kitchen. Personal Touch Kitchens & Bathrooms has standard cabinets but can also provide custom cabinets to fit unique or unusual spaces. For the family that likes to stay organized there are cabinet doors with a chalkboard panel and

personal retreat. Cheryl and Kim are committed to helping their clients every step of the way. “We can do as little or as much as needed,” says Cheryl. “We want to work with our clients to ensure they get the remodel that they want at a budget they can afford. I try to help people find ways to save money every step of the way with their remodels. Each remodeling project is different and so we make sure our clients get the individual, personal attention they deserve so they are happy when their remodel is complete.”

extra storage on the end for pens, pencils and other supplies. Some bathroom cabinets come with features that might surprise you, like a lift-up door that can be used to hide toiletries, medicine bottles, hair dryers and other accessories that clutter bathroom counters. In the kitchen you’ll be able to find the perfect place for every pot, pan, spice and dish.

Step 2 – Choose your countertops. In addition to quartz and granite countertops in a wide variety of colors and finishes including matte, Personal Touch Kitchens & Baths now offers butcher block countertops by John Boos & Co., the leader in butcher block countertops and free standing islands.

Step 3 – Let Personal Touch Kitchens & Baths work their design magic. Once you know what look you’d like, Cheryl or Kim will visit your house to measure the space and provide you with a free estimate. They can also include any extra design details you’d like. With Personal Touch Kitchens & Baths helping you out, you can get a kitchen that will truly be the best room in your house or a bathroom that will become your own

Nearshore Fishing by Captain Matt Selby

By the end of the month, the King and Spanish Mackerel, will start to leave our nearshore wrecks but not to worry, a new and tasty new fish will start to move into their favorite shallow water “Winter holes.” Want to take a guess which fish will be within the reach of many anglers in November March? Grouper! The fish that put the Tampa Bay area, most specifically the waters off St. Pete and Clearwater, on the map when it comes to commercial fishing. Luckily for us, the commercial guys don’t usually bother the nearshore fishing holes many of us recreational fishermen target. Large numbers of Red and Gag Grouper pour into our nearshore waters with keeper size fish being caught in as shallow as 8 feet and in some cases even less!

Very few people know the “secret spots” nearshore that hold quality fish and many of my fishing numbers have been passed down to me for generations. “People don’t realize how many fish they pass up when they decide to make a 40 mile trek or more offshore in search of Grouper. Many spots we found by mistake but we used that information to find more spots that mimicked the habitat the grouper seemed to like.” -Tim Selby If you’ve never caught a Grouper, you owe it to yourself to feel the raw power of these incredible fish. We end up finding Cobia near the wrecks in the winter time as well, another hard fighting, tasty creature. When you’re ready, lets go fishing! Capt-Matt Selby captainselby1507@gmail.com

Satisfied Clients, A Stronger Community, A Sharper Roof! From humble beginnings working with his family’s construction business, Ed learned the ropes of roofing through sweat, determination and many years of spending time alongside family members in the Florida sun working on roofing jobs. Ed’s start as a teenager helping out family, turned into a love for helping people protect their homes, which has turned into hard earned experience and know-how in the roofing industry today. Ed’s passion for quality, excellence and hard work hasn’t changed one bit, and you can see that in his work and the smiles on the faces of his clients. professional, fair, and true to their word in every respect. The roofing job was completed on time, beautiful and perfect, with both the owner Ed and associate Darren wonderful to work with. They are truly concerned with quality workmanship and are involved throughout the whole process. My roofing experience could not have been better. This is truly a five star company worth doing business with. Highly recommended, and trust me, I am a perfectionist and was not disappointed. You will be missing out on a quality fair priced job if you do not at least get a quote from them. Their crew is experienced and hard working and clean-up was well done.” Mary Leblo Lazzarato says, “We had a leak in our roof in 2014

and went with a different roofer who said he could repair it for $500. But the next good rain proved that the repair had not been fixed, so in 2015 we went to Sharpe Professional Roofing and got a new roof. They were very professional, didn't request the money until the job was done and we were very satisfied. They even recommended someone to re-finish the ceiling that had a stain on it from the leak. We would definitely recommend Sharpe Professional Roofing.” Not only are Ed and his team at Sharpe Professional Roofing qualified and trustworthy, they care about their community and do what they can to give back. From helping feed the homeless on Saturdays, to donating

time and money to the Hillsborough Education Foundation - Sharpe Professional Roofing stays involved in our communities because they are a part of it. Pasco Camera Exchange, “Preserving Your Family Memories” product without the personal touch. As time passes, families grow and change and, too often, family history can become lost. When you look at an old photo you may not remember its significance. If your grandparents are no longer around to tell the story behind the photograph, the memory may be lost forever. As time passes, your old home movies, slides, photos, and videos change too. Movie film, slides, and photos fade, change color, and become brittle or fragile. Even videotape degrades over time and when video formats become obsolete; your family’s memories may be lost. The staff at Pasco Camera Exchange has over 30 years of experience in audiovisual production and we understand the importance of preserving your family’s precious memories for future generations. Located at 5405 Main Street in New Port Richey, Pasco Camera Exchange has been a trusted source for over 20 years in camera purchases (both new and used), camera repairs, photography supplies and classes. Preserving the Past So many people have that big box of slides in the back of their closet – photos that are close to 100 years old or old family movie film – what you don’t realize is that you can easily lose them to decay if you don’t transfer them to a digital format. Environmental factors such as temperature, humidity and sunlight affect photographs significantly. Not long ago, there was no way for an individual to indefinitely safeguard those films, but with advances in digital technology, those precious moments of personal history can be preserved for generations to come.

express how much we value the role they play in our lives. As each recipient has wowed you in some way, Edible Arrangements Trinity is ready to do the same! Edible Arrangements Trinity is developing unique and inventive fresh fruit concepts daily to help show those important to you just how much they mean. Reassuring someone how much you appreciate him or her is an investment you should make not only during the holiday season, but also throughout the year. Shannon and Ryan Colbert, owners of Edible Arraingments Trinity, and to the far left, Landon, the CEO (cutest executive officer!) Successful professional relationships can include numerous factors, but one of the oftenoverlooked methods of showing your gratitude is to send a gift. Regardless of where you are geographically speaking, you can send gifts to employees and clients that make them feel close even if you’re far apart. Edible Arrangements Trinity can help you show that your company stands

for relationships, thoughtfulness, and going the extra mile. Choosing to send a gift to a client often opens up the lines of contact. The client will most likely reply, providing you the opportunity to discuss ongoing business needs and solutions. When gifts are given internally, they help workers recognize their part in the greater whole of the company. If a specific employee

deserves an award for their hard work, a corporate gift to that person can help build the morale of the worker and make him or her feel like their work is noticed by management and executives. What better way to show your appreciation than with a delicious arrangement from Edible Arrangements? To say these creations are “artistic” would be putting it lightly It has been less than a year but it didn’t take The Colbert’s long to realize this is exactly where they

wanted to be. From open to close almost 7 days a week, there’s a good chance you will run into Ryan working. What makes his new career so very different from the past is he’s working because he wants to. The opportunity to work in at atmosphere that brings so much enjoyment and provides the availability to spend those long hours with his family is a chance most don’t come across. The Colbert’s recognize this and know they are part of something bigger than just a job. When the doors opened for

business, Ryan and Shannon were unsure of what the future held for their family. The feeling of uncertainty was quickly diminished by the overwhelming welcome of not just their Trinity family, but also the love from the surrounding area. Without the generous support, Edible Arrangements Trinity would not be possible and they are beyond grateful. Something that Ryan and Shannon feel very passionate about is bettering the community they love, work, and live in. 41 million people face hunger in the U.S. today. Nearly 13 million children and more than 5 million seniors. Hunger knows no boundaries and touches all communities in the U.S. including our own. In an effort to make a difference, Edible Arrangements Trinity and the Colbert Family donate fresh produce weekly to support the fight against hunger. It’s clear that we have some very special people involved in the evolution of this amazing place we call home. It is easy to walk into a company, utilize their services and continue on with your day. Edible Arrangements Trinity has engaged in such a way that makes your experience more than just the services they offer. The character of the owners, Ryan and
