Bridging the Education Gap with KnowledgePoints Tutoring By Tom Bostock Children learn at their own individual pace. Unfortunately, today’s education system is designed to teach the “average” student at a standardized one. Children who learn at different rates often get left behind, become frustrated, and may even act out in class. As an unknown educator wrote, “Childhood is not a race to see how quickly a child can read, write and count. Childhood is a small window of time to learn and develop at the pace which is right for each individual child.” It is within that “small window of time” that a child develops the learning habits that will last a lifetime. What do you, as a parent, do in a climate of overcrowded, underfunded public schools and overworked, underpaid teachers who don’t have the time to provide individual student attention? There is a way to help your child overcome learning obstacles not addressed, or even created by regular school; a way to stimulate their imagination. Have you considered tutoring? If you live in the Land O’Lakes area or Trinity, you owe it to yourself and your child to visit KnowledgePoints. Employing stateof-the-art, cutting edge tutoring techniques, taught by dedicated, skilled professionals, they can be the answer to your child’s learning problems in a non-threatening, supportive learning environment. KnowledgePoints does not believe that “one size fits all.” Instead, they have an initial assessment process that identifies your child’s acadmic learning weaknesses and

areas that would benefit from individualized coaching in a non-threatening, nuturing environment where success is an integral part of the process. After discussing and parental acceptance of the center’s recommendations, a customized learning program is developed for each student to focus on their own individual problem learning areas and weaknesses or even to prepare for standardized tests like SATs and ACTs. With affordable rates, $40/$50/hour, depending on the complexity of the subject, multiple excellence awards and 35+ experienced instructors, you can be sure that your child will profit from their experience at KnowledgePoints. Here are a few of the unsolicited testamonials from parents with children who have benefitted from KnowledgePoints tutoring. Visit their website: (https://trinity.knowledgepoints. First of all, I hope you and your loved ones are staying safe. Before I get sidetracked and start rambling about the beaches not closing sooner and the toilet paper hoarding situation, I will go straight to the point. The Tampa Bay community needs you; it needs all of us. In my previous Editorial, I coincidentally talked about supporting local businesses and what an incredible role they played in fostering our local economy, keeping money close to home, and supporting neighborhoods and communities. Small businesses employ about 47 percent of private-sector workers in the U.S., meaning nearly 60 million individuals depend on them to support themselves and their families. These businesses range from your local, independent restaurant to the self-employed accountant. The global pandemic caused by the Coronavirus has negatively impacted hundreds of thousands of independent local businesses all over the state of Florida, and Tampa Bay has been particularly affected. The rapid spread of CoronavirusCoronavirus (COVID-19) has led to specific critical social-distancing measures that are keeping people homebound and avoiding unnecessary shopping trips and social gatherings in order to “flatten the curve.” While those efforts are incredibly important for the greater good, these sudden changes in consumer behavior have had a devastating impact on local businesses, particularly restaurants and bars. Local Tampa Bay Yelp data shows in a recent “impact report” that over the past week, U.S. consumer interest for

restaurants has fallen by 54%, and for nightlife businesses including local bars by 70%. Many of these local bars and restaurant owners, staff and workers, are our friends, our relatives, our very own neighbors. And they are all struggling. We must support them now more than ever. How You Can Help Continue to shop local! Follow your favorite local businesses, bars, and restaurants on social media. A lot of them have been busy adapting to this unprecedented crisis. Some of your favorite local eateries have launched new take out menus and even FREE delivery options. Many of them use apps like UberEats, DoorDash, and GrubHub. Many of these apps are even waving delivery fees to support local restaurants. Enjoy some of your favorite foods in the comfort of your own safe home. To get through this challenging and uncertain time, we all must come together as a stable and supportive community. Let’s all do our part to help lift those local businesses that were hit the hardest by the impact of this pandemic. The Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles team has always been committed to supporting small local businesses and will continue to its part while respecting the social-distancing regulations. “Give, and it will be given to you.” Luke 6:38. Stay safe, everyone, until next month!

medically necessary (as determined by our providers) for them to come into the office for evaluation. These patients are also being asked to come alone to the appointments unless it is absolutely medically necessary for the patient to be accompanied and assisted. 5. If you must come into the office for an appointment please bring your own pen and magazine to avoid potential transmission of the Coronavirus.

We offer two options for Televisits: A subscription basis which starts at $10 per person per month and on an as needed basis. Please call the office for details on each option. You can rest assured that we are doing everything we can for our patients and the community, online and in person. In the office or online we are here for you! is sick and restrict contact with other people. • Even at home, remain at least six feet away from other people while you are sick. • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands. • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth especially with unwashed hands. • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. • The CDC continues to recommend against the use of face masks for people who do not have

symptoms. More importantly, we know you and your medical history. At times like this

the subscription Telehealth service can be astronomically expensive but we are announcing and debuting our subscription service for only $10 per month for existing patients. If you are not a patient there is more reason than ever to join! If the subscription service is not an option for you please feel free to use the Televisit service on an as needed basis. our results! We saved so much money by having the grout in our shower resurfaced and the tile cleaned and it looks brand new.” BJ is happy to set your appointment, come out and give you a free estimate. She stresses, “It is important for me to be respectful of our customers’ time so I will always arrive at the time we set.” In addition to always arriving in a timely manner, BJ says that they can keep their prices low because they are a family

Because grout is a porous material, trying to remove stains is seemingly

Before impossible. BJ explains, “Color sealing grout lines is one of the many services we offer and it is definitely the most effective way to create a perfect, new look.” Using a step-by-step process, Grout Tech begins by using a cleansing product to remove all bacteria and surface dirt with special machinery. They will then apply a color seal (of your choice). Once the sealer is applied the grout lines will be permanently protected from any stains.

The color seal also guarantees against cracking, chipping and peeling. Additionally, they will also cosmetically fix or replace chipped or cracked tiles, making your bathroom or kitchen tile like new again. After Kathy G., a satisfied customer, shares her experience, “When BJ came out to give us a quote, she looked at the job and I could tell immediately that she knew what she was talking about. We had our family room, kitchen and dining room re-grouted. They also re-grouted the tub, shower and base of our toilet in our bathroom. They were fantastic! Not only were they professional and reliable but they also completed the job much faster than we had anticipated.”

True Storytelling Goes Virtual at Powerstories Theatre By Deborah Bostock-Kelley February 2020, at Powerstories Theatre, everything was normal. Life as they knew it, in the local professional theatre community, went like clockwork, predictable. A show began rehearsals, another opened, and another closed. And then the pandemic swept across the globe. The box office closed, and the theatre doors shut for the safety of cast, crew, and patrons. As a matter of life and death from the Coronavirus, people socially isolated. For many, Powerstories Theatre was what brought joy to busy lives, represented a welcome reprieve from the 9-to-5 grind, and was the social connection in which many looked forward. Now, three short weeks later, on social media, performers are looking for a creative outlet,

12 APRIL 2020

singing over soapy hands; playwrights are writing short stories and plays revolving around the virus; musicians are giving virtual concerts from their living rooms. During this time, Powerstories Theatres has created a brilliant way to connect with a global audience while the stage is dark. Founder Fran Powers and her team have discovered an innovative way to be true to their mission statement of “staging true stories to open minds and hearts and inspire action worldwide” while adapting to entertain their audience in this new virtual reality. In 2000, when Fran returned from her cross-country bike journey, she founded Powerstories Theatre with a simple question, “do you have a story to tell?” Twenty years and hundreds of true story productions later, the theatre is celebrating its unexpected dark

time and its 20th anniversary by asking the same question. “Do you have a story to tell?” The theatre is going back to its roots to ask everyone – young and old – “during this unprecedented time in our history, what brings you joy? What is your story?” Participants can share their true stories that bring them joy, create a short maximum threeminute YouTube or Vimeo video hashtag #positivelypowerstories and post the link, or email an MP4. Storytellers can also make an audio file MP3, or email their personal artwork, their photograph, their sketch, their painting, etc. and email as JPG, GIF, or PNG. During everyone’s time sequestered, Powerstories is trying to put the social back in isolation safely. “We know people are hurting during this time, so we will also do periodic random drawings

for cash and other prizes for our storytellers. Our goal is to help during this trying time.” Using the tagline spreading joy, not germs, celebrating its 20th anniversary during the pandemic, the intimate, professional theatre will be sharing the true stories of storytellers around the globe on a weekly episodic basis beginning on April 1. “We are building something beautiful,” Fran said, “We cannot be very physically connected at this time, but we can be spiritually connected.” Submit your story at https://bit.ly/3dejPhU and follow www.facebook.com/ Powerstories for access to the website that will showcase all selected stories in their many platforms.

Understanding Autism with Dana Johnson, PhD, MS, OTR/L By Dana Johnson, PhD, MS, OTR/L (with input from autistic advocates) Redefining Autism April is Autism Awareness month and April 2nd was World Autism Day. As an occupational therapist working with those on the autism spectrum, I want to help inform others about some incorrect assumptions and hopefully change the thinking around those with autism. Autism has traditionally been seen as a social and cognitive disorder. However, there is new research that is pointing to autism as a movement disorder. A movement disorder means that some of the behaviors that we typically see in the autistic population are a result of a disruption in the nervous system causing a “disconnect” between the brain and the body. The person understands what is asked, but despite their efforts cannot get their body to do the task. As a result, it appears like they don’t want to do something or don’t understand. By shifting our perceptions of autism from a social and cognitive deficit to redefining it as difficulty with the nervous system, the outlook for these individuals is

16 APRIL 2020

much brighter. Processing Explained Our brains are constantly taking in outside information from the world around us – visual, sound, textures, and movements. When the brain pathways that help us to understand the sensory information are shutdown or broken, we are not able to do the things we want to do every day. Every single

movement we make would be affected by the brain’s difficulty processing incoming sensory information. We would also have a very difficult time learning new skills, not because we don’t understand the goal, but because of the broken or disconnected pathways between the brain and body that make it very hard to do. Here are a few things that you may not know about individuals on the spectrum.

Keep in mind that every autistic person is different, and not all may apply. What is Apraxia? Many individuals with autism also have apraxia. Apraxia is the inability to have control over our own movements on demand. It affects all movements and our ability to start and stop a movement. Apraxia is a disconnect between the

For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

brain and the body. It is not a cognitive or intellectual disability and it can look like many things, including: • Not starting or completing a task • Not being able to speak • Running away and not stopping • Getting stuck doing the same thing over and over Often these behaviors are seen as the individual not wanting to do something or not listening; however, this is not the case. These individuals cannot control their bodies, which is incredibly frustrating for them. What is Dysregulation? Dyregulation happens when we are overloaded with sensory stimuli and/or are experiencing intense emotions, which could be positive (e.g. excited) and negative (e.g. angry). What could dysregulation look like? • Laughing out of context • Hitting/kicking someone else or themselves • Screaming/yelling • Impulsivity • Running away • Saying “no” What causes dysregulation? Here are some examples from autistic individuals that cause dysregulation for them.

• Exhaustion • Excitement • Feeling the pressure to talk • Not being able to get my body to do what I want it to do • Being stuck in a place that’s too loud What can we do to support regulation? • Don’t always assume that they don’t want to do something. Assume that they want to do it, but they need help • Bring your voice down; speak calmly • Give the person a break and then regroup and try again • Strategies such as breathing, taking a walk, and going to a quiet space can help • Provide an environment that keeps the individual engaged in an activity. Boredom can cause dysregulation Labels and Language Language is extremely important when speaking about autism. It is important to be respectful and empathetic towards individuals with autism. “Violent” – when emotions are running high, the reaction can be misinterpreted as violent. Instead, it is the overflow of emotions that may cause the loss of body control. This is something that autistic individuals cannot control,

but we perceive them as unpredictable tantrums that are intentionally directed towards others or themselves. This is incorrect. “Behavior” – We typically see the word ‘behavior’ along with autism and it is always used as a negative term. It’s important that we consider the brainbody disconnect and that the ‘behavior’ is not always in the control of the person. “Intellectually Disabled” – Individuals with autism typically receive an intellectually delayed diagnosis as well. However, intelligence tests require the use of proficient motor skills and autistic individuals have motor skill challenges (apraxia) so they are unable to accurately demonstrate what they know and because of apraxia, they may demonstrate their abilities in different ways. “High Functioning” or “Low Functioning” – These terms are typically associated with intellectual ability. These terms are also incredibly disrespectful to any human being. Intelligence tests require adequate motor skills and with apraxia, it is impossible to accurately determine an individuals intellectual ability.

For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

“Aggressive” – This word is often associated with the autism population. It is assumed that these individuals have control over their bodies and “choose” to be aggressive. This is not the case. Dysregulation, anxiety and stress can cause them to be much more impulsive. This impulsivity is beyond their control and can cause them to be self-injurious or injurious towards others. By focusing on supporting their regulation and motor coordination, we can help the person have more control over their bodies. Finally, PRESUME COMPETENCE. Presuming competence means that individuals have the ability to learn and understand, and want to learn. It means treating people respectfully and as an equal. Presuming competence is NOT an act of kindness or feeling sorry for the person. Those on the autism spectrum should not have to prove that they are intelligent. Let’s change our thinking and educate ourselves so that we can be supportive of those on the spectrum. “Knowledge Points” story continued from page 1 com/testimonials/) and read what your friends and neighbors had to say: ”When my son first started, he was significantly behind in reading, not confident about his reading, and I was extremely scared and frustrated about his lack of academic progress. Thanks to KnowledgePoints and their tutors, we developed a plan, and it worked! My son’s reading skills not only improved dramatically, but his confidence in reading improved greatly.” “We took my daughter to KnowledgePoints to improve her ACT scores. Due to high school sports obligations, she was able to take only half the recommended tutoring time for ACT prep. She was still able to raise her composite ACT scores by 3 points, and her math score improved significantly. After she first took the test, her tutor adjusted the curriculum to concentrate on the areas that needed the most improvement. She liked the tutors and never complained about spending her Saturday mornings at tutoring. The initial ACT/SAT diagnostic tests and evaluations were

very helpful.” ”KnowledgePoints has been a true blessing for my children. It has provided them with a solid foundation academically that they will continue to build upon. I would recommend KnowledgePoints to parents who are seeking enrichment for their children.” These are just 3 of the many success stories, and acknowledgements that are the norm for KnowledgePoints owners, Rocky and Monica Contreras from their students and parents. A graduate of Rollins College, Magna Cum Laude, Rocky worked in the business world as an executive but was dissatisfied, wanting

to do something that had more community impact. With his wife, Monica, an award winning elementary school teacher of more than 20 years, they started their 1st KnowledgePoints 12 years ago in Land O’ Lake and their most recent facility in Trinity 4 years ago. Rocky said that he offers both a “homework help” and a “prescriptive, skillsbased” approach to teach the children, depending on what that student needs. “We work very hard to make learning fun,” he said. These incentivized programs involve “success points,” which students earn just by showing up and

working hard. These points can be redeemed at “success central,” an in-house store where students can shop with their points. Younger students can choose toys, puzzles and gifts for immediate gratification, while older ones often accumlate points for rewards like a gift card or other mature gifts. Like the name implies, it gives all ages a sense of success that they may not have experienced before and helps develop positive habits like work ethic and reliability. Rocky points with pride at the results of his prescriptive approach to learning where students are re-tested every 40 hours and his staff liaze with their students’ classroom teachers. The results are amazing; students averaged a 1 to 1 ½ grade level improvement every 40 hour testing period! There are programs available for all ages and learning levels. Besides Reading and Math Tutoring as well as a writing program for ages K -12, they also have a Study Skills program and provide preparation for SAT and ACT tests. Don’t be concerned if your child is having trouble in school. Call or visit either KnowledgePoints, Land O‘

Tech Talk with Bob: Corona Virus Attacks Computers By Bob Dalles Yes, it’s true. COVID-19, the Coronavirus Outbreak, can attack computers. But not in a way you might be thinking. Leave it to society’s lowest form of dirtbags to take advantage of people when they are at their most vulnerable. The Coronavirus Pandemic has given cyber criminals yet another platform in which they can snatch your money and contaminate your computer with dangerous malware leaving it in a precarious state. My friends, I urge you to be on the lookout for these cyber scams. It is not my intent to frighten you but rather to make you more vigilant and aware of steps you can take to protect

20 APRIL 2020

yourself and the people you care about. The COVID-19 outbreak will certainly increase cyber criminals’ email phishing campaigns in the coming months. As you spend more time at home you will probably be spending more time online. While online, please, please, please, be wary of any links you click. There may be coronavirus computer attacks poised for attack in your email’s inbox right now. It’s just a matter of whether you will click the link or delete the email. I’ll bet you are getting emails from many of the companies you deal with in regard to how they are reacting to this pandemic. Especially watch out for the emails you may receive from companies you DO NOT do business with.

If you get an email from a bank you have never done business with, beware. Why would they send you an email? You may also be getting

emails from helpful friends and family that may include links to news stories, medical information and so forth. Emails made to look like they come from credible

companies, organizations, and other familiar entities can be spoofed (faked) to look like they came from a trusted source. Embedded in these phishing emails might be links offering to connect you to another website with more information. Please think twice before you click that link. If for any reason you are not sure you can trust the link, then do not click it. You should always type in the website address yourself instead of using a convenient link that looks legit but may be programmed to attack you. Don’t believe any unsolicited emails you receive from the IRS or the U.S. Treasury. At the time I am writing this, congress is trying to figure out how to get money to people. This makes a perfect opportunity for cyber criminals. Do not engage in any activity online or on the phone until you

are completely confident you are dealing with a legitimate source. Here are some sources you might find helpful: Coronavirus.gov ---- www.CDC.gov ----- www. HHS.gov ----- www.flhealth. gov ----- www.Tgh.org/ virtual-care The Florida Department of Health has a COVID-19 Hotline at 1-866-779-6121. If your computer is having symptoms or you are unsure of its security, safety, or health, please call me at 727534-4000. We are still open for business. We have the ability to provide support without needing to send an IT Specialist out to your home or office. We can remotely access your computer to

perform most repairs. We can also remotely perform complete scans for viruses and other malware issues. So if you think you have malware, we can scan for it remotely from our location to yours. So, during a selfquarantine, we can still provide technical support to you over your phone and internet connection. Cyber criminals will exploit the easy victims and unprotected systems.
