From The Editor Carla Selby
Trinity Area Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles
Happy New Year From The Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles Family! I am very pleased to have the opportunity to wish you, our readers, our neighbors, our friends, a very happy new year 2018. On behalf of the entire Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles team, I would like to express our gratitude for your continuous support and readership. 2017 was a very busy and challenging year for us at Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles, as we underwent major and significant changes. With a brand new name that better reflects our extensive reach, and a more modern design that strives to keep up with the times, Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles continues to evolve but always maintaining it's position as the premier community news and restaurant guide in the city. I hope everyone is feeling a bit rejuvenated this January 2018. It's always good to start a new year strong as we're facing a new set of

challenges, new adventures and new opportunities with a clean slate ahead. If you were not victorious in meeting your resolutions in 2017, don't worry! Keep on keeping on, don't give up and make 2018 your year! Just stay strong and determined, and make sure you set realistic goals for yourself. If your resolutions include traveling all over the world or getting in the best shape of your life, you've already set yourself up for failure. When you aim to do too much, you scatter your energy and reduce your chances of success. Instead, try to concentrate your will on just one concrete small goal at a time, and be specific about it. So for instance, instead of saying, "I will get in the best shape of my life," resolve to say "I will lose 10lbs by the end of the year," or "I will exercise at least twice a week this year." If your resolution is to "see the

When you rush into a last-minute promise, without really prepping for it, you're less likely to see it through. Smaller goals are easier to achieve and measure, and believe me, small changes always make the biggest difference. Finally, with all the unrest and intolerance in the world, I sincerely hope you and your loved ones find peace and a have a safe, healthy and above all happy new year 2018.

TAX REFORM - How does it affect you? Karen Wiseman, EA TICA (Tax Cuts and Jobs Act) was signed in December 2017. Virtually all taxpayers (individuals and businesses) are impacted by changes in the tax reform legislation. Most changes take effect on January 1, 2018. Tax returns filed during the spring of 2018 (for the 2017 tax year) are generally not affected. But knowing about these changes now will help you plan and understand how the TCJA could impact your take-home pay and tax refund. Below is a general overview of some of the new tax changes beginning in 2018.
Personal and dependent exemptions are eliminated Under the TCJA, personal and dependent exemptions are eliminated from 2018 through 2025.
Tax brackets and tax rates change for most taxpayers Most tax filers will pay tax using a new tax bracket and tax rate structure. In comparison to previous tax brackets and tax rates, the new rates due to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act are slightly lower and the brackets are generally slightly broader.
New credit for non-child dependents available through 2025 The TCJA allows a new $500 nonrefundable credit for dependents who do not qualify for the child tax credit. Taxpayers can claim this credit for children who are too old for the child tax credit, as well as for non-child

Child tax credit increased through 2025 Through 2025, the TCJA increases the maximum child tax credit for qualifying children under age 17 from $1,000 to $2,000. The refundable portion of the credit increases from $1,000 to $1,400. These amounts will be subject to phaseouts based in income.

dependents. Taxpayers cannot claim the credit for themselves or their spouse (if MFJ).
$18,000 (head of household) $24,000 (married filing jointly)
Standard deduction increases through 2025 The standard deduction will increase. In 2018, the standard deduction amounts will be: $12,000 (single)
Health care penalty eliminated The penalty for failure to obtain health insurance coverage (the “individual mandate”) will be eliminated beginning in 2019. Taxpayers who did not have

coverage in 2017 or 2018 will continue to owe a penalty for those years, unless they qualify for an exemption. Self-employed taxpayers may claim a new deduction for qualified business income Self-employed taxpayers can deduct up to 20% of qualified business income from a sole proprietorship, partnership, or S corporation.

Bob the Computer Guy & Associates: Technology with a Human Touch! Most of us depend on computers and other IT devices every day. Occasionally these devices act quirky, slow down or completely breakdown. When this happens we need someone to quickly help us get back up and running. Someone to give us reliable and courteous service; someone who will explain the problem without confusing “technical jargon.” Most of all, we need someone we can trust who will give us an honest assessment of our situation and charge a fair price to fix it. “I understand how stressful it is when the technology our customers rely on does not work,” said Bob Dalles, president of Bob The Computer Guy & Associates, Inc., a full-service computer and IT company dedicated to providing you with only the finest Computer and Information Technology Services available. “I recognize the additional stress and inconvenience of having to disconnect the computer (or other device), drag it
12
into a repair shop, and then wait days or weeks to get it back. We make our customers’ repair process effortless because we come to their location and perform our computer repairs on-site. It’s a major convenience that our customers love. They schedule a time for us to

come to their home or office, and when we leave their problem is solved and their computers are fixed.” Dalles has been involved with computers since the late 1970s. In 1995 he started his own computer business. In addition, he is approaching his tenth year as a Computer and Information Technology Instructor for a well-known Technical College. He also writes a regular technology column entitled “Tech Talk” where he shares information from his decades of experience working with technology. “I am pleased that I have received very positive feedback on the column and am glad it serves the readers well,” said Dalles. Dalles’s company serves hundreds of customers in the Tampa Bay area. Many are

businesses but the rest are home users. “We especially enjoy working with individuals in their homes,” Dalles said. “They need tech help too, and are not always sure where to find service performed by professionally certified technicians who they can trust. I feel that everyone needs and deserves access to professional quality computer help, but they don’t always know where to find it. It’s not uncommon for us to hear new customers tell us that they did not even know companies like ours existed; and that they’re so glad they found us.” “We treat every customer like a friend and every computer as if it were our own,” said Dalles, “I take great pride in the high level of service my company provides. I personally hand pick each Associate-Technician to make sure that they not only know their craft, but also provide top-notch customer service. I want my customers happy and extremely satisfied. I won’t settle for less.”
Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles
“One of the additional features that our customers appreciate is the flexibility in scheduling your appointment,” says Dalles. “We’re not just a 9am to 5pm operation. One of the great benefits of working with us is that you and the Associate-Technician set your appointment for a time that works best for you; day or night, weekday or weekend. You are in control.” Associate-Technician Christian, is very popular with senior citizens. “There are a lot of tech savvy seniors who rely on their computers every day. Some have commented to me that they really value the way Christian takes his time to explain the repair to them, one customer even said she loves him,” Dalles said. “A unique service I have offered for many years is a Pre-Purchase Consultation,” says Dalles. “Let’s say that you are looking to purchase a new laptop computer. The technical information describing the computer in a store’s website or newspaper ad can be very confusing. Many buyers can easily become overwhelmed by the different choices and prices offered by
Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles
computer manufacturers. More often than not, they ask a friend or rely on the recommendation of a sales person, or many times just buy what’s on sale. The benefit of our Pre-Purchase Consultation allows us to meet with you in person, assess your needs, and help you make the purchase decision that best suits your situation. I want to help the customer make an informed decision before they spend their hard-earned money. For example, one of the most common issues we’ve run across is that a person buys a new computer. While they are setting it up they find out that the new software that runs the computer will not work with a printer they have owned for years. Now they have a brand new computer, but it won’t work with their existing printer or scanner or some other device they need to use. I often see this happen with certain software programs too. Now the customer not only has to buy a new printer, but may also need to upgrade some computer software and they find themselves spending much more money than they had originally planned. Our
Pre-Purchase Consultation helps buyers avoid costly pitfalls and unwelcome surprises. We can sit down with customers and browse websites with them to find the best fit. I have even met customers at stores and helped them with buying decisions. Providing a potential buyer with the information they need saves them time, money and a ton of stress. Come on, buying a new piece of technology shouldn’t be a nightmare, it should be a fun and exciting experience!” “I’ve recently introduced a new service where we will dispose of your old computer safely and securely,” says Dalles. “You just can’t throw away computers into the regular trash. There are laws that dictate the proper disposal of substances found in computer components. Plus, you want to make sure that your computer’s hard drive data files are completely purged to protect your privacy which helps minimize potential identity theft. We can make this process easier for you. We will pick up your computer, then once the data has been safely removed, your
computer will be disposed of in a secure and environmentally safe manner. We pride ourselves on customer convenience and creating personal relationships with our customers. We want to help our customers in all aspects of their technological life from setting up their systems to disposing of them,” Dalles said. Bob The Computer Guy & Associates, Inc. is an entirely mobile computer services company. In addition to on-site troubleshooting and repairs, they offer setting up networks, printers, scanners, new computers and other tech devices; virus, spyware and other malware removal; securing your computer and network; transferring data between devices; system and data backups; personal tutoring; and more! Whatever your needs, no job is too small. For honest, reliable service performed by professionally certified technicians at a fair price then you want Bob The Computer Guy & Associates, Inc. Does balance lie within your ears? Trinity Hearing and Balance By Carla Selby
Many of us have experienced a degree of dizziness at some point during our lives. Possibly after your favorite rollercoaster ride or that all too memorable stomach flu. What about issues with hearing? Remember when you had that cold and it felt like you were always saying, well… yelling, “WHAT!?” We all know what these symptoms feel like and why it’s no fun. Unfortunately for some people, its not something that goes away after few minutes or a 3 day bug. It’s something that makes simple daily tasks merely impossible. If this sounds like you, Trinity Hearing & Balance is ready to help! and one of just a handful of clinics worldwide to offer this paradigmshifting technology. This painless, computerized system offers treatment options for patients suffering from dizziness associated with inner ear disorders. The Omniax System allows the audiologist to rule in and rule out various causes of vertigo. This, in turn, allows for more precise treatment, with a significantly greater chance of success. The software-driven, patient-positioning system uses infrared video goggles to assist caregivers in analyzing the eye movement patterns, known as nystagmus, which are associated with disorders caused by loose particles in the inner ear canals (the cause of Vertigo) as well as nonparticle positional vertigo. Trinity Hearing & Balance stresses the importance of accurate and timely testing. Dr. Kelly Hansen and Dr. Nikki Goldowski have more than 20 years of experience treating these conditions.

You Had Me at Cannoli! Come on out to LIADO’s 14th Annual San Gennaro Festa on February 17th & 18th! By Julie Kanehl Let’s be honest here, it’s all about the food. I’m not talking about just any food; I’m talking about Italian food. LIADO’s San Gennaro Festa is jam packed with all of the wonderful Italian delights that you know, love and long for. Want to enjoy all of those favorites in one place? Then it’s safe to say that you should probably mark your calendar for LIADO’s 14th Annual San Gennaro Festa. Your first stop will want to be at LIADO’s La Cucina, where you’ll enjoy olives, cheese, bread, cannoli, pizzelle and wine. But don’t stop there. You won’t want to miss the meatballs made with love by the ladies of LIADO, zeppole, and other mouthwatering Italian creations! This delicious event, centered on Italian heritage, is part street fair with vendors to delight your every shopping whim, part culinary treat, and part dance party! Of course, they’ll let you in, even if you can’t dance the Tarantella! Guests can expect to enjoy live music all weekend with
entertainment by amazing bands including The Black Honkeys on Saturday night, which has quite a local following, and Joey Dee and the Starliters of “ Peppermint Twist” fame on Sunday night.
Dance, Sing & Eat Italian-Style! It’s Festa Time! Held on Saturday and Sunday, the 18th and 19th of February at the Safety Harbor Waterfront Park, LIADO’s San Gennaro Festa is a
hearty nod to the Feast of San Gennaro, which brings over a million people to New York’s Little Italy each year. The entire Festa centers around San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples, Italy who was martyred for his faith. Italians who first came to this country, gathered together to celebrate, pray, and party in his name. And that celebration continues every year in many corners of the world. Luckily for us, we can simply join the Italians and Italian-enthusiasts from all over the world to take part in the festivities and support a few great causes at the same time. More than just food that is delicioso, if that’s even possible, LIADO’s San Gennaro Festa is a charitable event produced and hosted by LIADO, The Italian-American Women of Today. 100% of net proceeds benefit the LIADO Scholarship Program and local charities such as The Alzheimer’s Association of Florida (Gulf Coast Chapter), Children’s Cancer Center, One Voice Foundation (Children’s Cancer Research Group at USF), Autism Speaks and many others. To date, LIADO has awarded $154,000 to
deserving students of Italian descent who are dedicated to furthering their education. In addition to the delectable food and the upbeat entertainment, the San Gennaro Festa will offer a museum that features highlights from Italian heritage, information about supporting and joining LIADO, and the opportunity to meet some of the amazing ladies who have worked so hard to put this exciting event together. So, who is this amazing organization that organizes a street fair that would make a saint proud? LIADO, The Italian-American Women of Today (Le Italo-Americane di Oggi), is a local nonprofit 501(c) 3 group of women who have a simple but powerful goal to preserve the Italian heritage and to pass it down to the younger generations, while giving charitably to the community. Of course, they have a whole lot of fun in
Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles
the meantime. When they aren’t planning a Festa and cooking for thousands, they share recipes, camaraderie, friendship, and a love of the cultural and family history that binds them all together.
documentaries, when you join LIADO, you’ll be welcomed like family. If you’re an Italian-American who would love to know more about your culture, and make a few dozen friends at the same time, join LIADO, for the women there do far more than create a Festa, they share their hearts of gold with the community. In the meantime, make your plans now to come to LIADO’S San Gennaro Festa on February 17th and 18th in Safety Harbor! Cash admission is only $6 per person, and children 12 and under are free! Let Dr. Cara do the adjusting, you do the healing! by Michelle Natkin
If you are one of the millions of people who’ve experienced chronic pain then you’ve likely sought out chiropractic care and have found the treatment to be quite the eye opener. Those who have never been to a chiropractor may not have the faintest idea of what chiropractors do, who should go to one, or how chiropractors can help. The same thing goes for massage therapy. Sure, going to your local spa and getting a massage feels great but a therapeutic massage performed along with the medical knowledge and guidance of a medical practitioner, like a chiropractor, can change the course of your rehabilitation and drastically improve your wellness. The choice to become a physician is one that can be made for many reasons. For Doctor Cara Hacht it stems from a true passion to help. Dr. Cara is dedicated to understanding each of her patient’s unique situation then providing
24
them with a multitude of treatment options through a natural, holistic approach to preventive healthcare and wellness. “It’s about treating each person as a whole” says Dr. Cara. Medicine has truly never been the goal, but a means to attain it for Dr. Hacht. Her search for real solutions comes from her experience and knowledge that pain is primarily a symptom of the true problem, and discovering that underlying issue is what leads to recovery. After working as a massage therapist for six years Dr. Cara realized she wanted to do more. She wanted to take the level of care she offered higher and decided to start chiropractic school. In 1994 she graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa with a Doctor of Chiropractic Degree and Bachelor of Science in Biology. In fall of 2011, Dr. Hacht opened her current location on Old County Road 54 and has been practicing in New Port Richey for over 20 years.

Dr. Cara Hacht (above) will tailor a treatment plan especially for you, to maximixe the results of the holistic approach she has to offer!
The reality is the muscles and joints of our bodies change affected by time, gravity, and many other factors. Massage Therapy is a

natural way to help guide those changes in a way that directs your body away from pain and loss of function. Over 80% of Americans

will suffer from some type of back pain however the cause of the discomfort is never quite the same. This didn’t take long for Dr. Hacht to notice and as a result, she truly believes in understanding YOU so that her therapeutic approach is tailored specifically to YOU, based on YOUR needs. Dr. Hacht’s background in massage therapy enables her to know how to work with her patient’s soft tissue through massage techniques while including the added benefits of chiropractic. When visiting Dr. Hacht, XRays may be necessary to better understand your condition. The availability of onsite x-rays allows her and her staff to come to your diagnosis quickly without the hassle of added travel and appointments. With Chiropractic being largest form of holistic healing in the world, People often turn to a chiropractor when traditional medicine does little to heal them from their everyday pain. Dr. Cara works by removing subluxations or misalignments of the spine so the body and the nervous system are operating at their best. This
Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles
practice has been proven to relieve and in some cases cure symptoms you would never guess were related. The truth is, behind many musculoskeletal problems are issues with lack of proper motion in the back, the neck, as well as the hips and/or other joints, including the 24 joints that make up your spine. Dr. Hacht uses a safe and gentle chiropractic manipulation in a spinal adjustment to restore proper joint mobility. In most cases, chiropractic adjustments do not hurt. Unfortunately, apprehension about the appointment causing pain or discomfort can keep away a new patient who can greatly benefit from this type of therapy. Do not fret! If you find yourself in this category it’s quite ok. Dr. Cara’s positive attitude and soothing spirit is sure to put the most nervous of her patients at ease. She has found in some of her patients that without massage therapy, they tend to tense up in anticipation of the adjustment. This can make your muscles sore. Dr. Cara’s technique of relaxing trigger points just before has led to many of her clients saying
she has “magic hands.” Combining both chiropractic and massage can speed up recovery time for those suffering from sore muscles or other medical issues. Chiropractic focuses on the hard tissue of the body (vertebrae and joints of the spine) while massage focuses on the soft tissues (muscles) of the body. By targeting both the hard and soft tissues, a faster and more overall complete recovery is achieved. Patients of all ages can be seen by Dr. Hacht. “All ages benefit from chiropractic care” She explains. “Although limited scientific evidence exists, people who suffer from trouble sleeping or asthma all benefit from chiropractic treatment. Dr. Hacht’s office is experienced in helping everyone from babies on up with neck and back pain, wellness care, slip and falls, auto cases and sinus problems. “We get to know our patients and look at how we can help them create a foundation of good health no matter what their age.” Keeping active within her community, Dr. Hacht works closely with her local chapter of the JDRF, a foundation she holds close
to her heart. The JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes research. JDRF’s research mission is to discover, develop and deliver advances that cure, better treat and prevent type 1 diabetes. Connect with Dr. Cara or the JDRF if you’d like more information on ways to join the fight to end T1D. Our body is the best doctor, and if we remove the interference to our natural function we will feel better, heal better and live longer. Learn how to maintain harmony of mind, body and spirit. Call Dr. Cara Hacht today and find out how beneficial care can influence not only you but your loved ones as well! Dr. Hacht is located at 8052 Old County Road 54 New Port Richey, FL 34653 (727) 375-5858 DrCara@DrCaraHacht.com Office hours are Monday and Wednesday, 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and 3 – 6:30 p.m.; from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Tuesday; from 1 p.m. – 7 p.m. on Thursday. SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: THE MENTAL SIDE By Dr. Wayne Adams When talking with parent(s), often the subject comes up about Test Anxiety. And in our short orientation at the beginning of my first prep class, I always ask the student(s) this question: “Do you get a little anxious before taking a test?” The answer is always, in one form or another, “Yes.” My answer to their “Yes” is that this is normal, we all have a little test anxiety before taking a test (including me), and by what we do in class this anxiety will fade almost immediately after they open the first page of the exam because they will think, “I have seen this before. I know that can do this. In fact, I can do this very well. So let’s get started.” I believe the mental side of taking standardized exams is very important, probably making a difference of 2 – 3 points on the ACT composite and 50 – 100 points on the SAT superscore. Let’s take a quick look at the major causes of test anxiety, the key ways to significantly reduce it and turn the thought-feeling package around into proper confidence, and
30
my famous statement that almost every one of my students hear in their head just before they start the actual exam. There are three major causes of test anxiety: expectations, emphasis, and fear. Expectations Beginning with expectations, these can be by the student, parent(s), peer(s), or others. Proper expectations are fine; the problems start when they do not have a proper foundation and resulting confidence. Often high GPA students at excellent schools get sucked down into tremendous anxiety (and a low score) when they open the first page and hit a question early that is difficult for them. This is a “surprise”, and often throws them off their “A game”. Recently I had a student with a 4.5 GPA in a top IB program who could not break a composite of 22 on the ACT. After we prepared together, he scored in the 30’s. Expecting to score at Ivy Leage/Top 25 levels is especially dangerous because there is so little room for mistakes or wrong answer,s
For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • info@NNLFlorida.com
and the pressure builds going through the exam. What I call “ultra-bright” students require a very different tutoring approach from regular and gifted students. Often the keys here are helping to spot traps, avoiding what we call silly mistakes, and extensive exposure to “curve ball” questions that seldom occur but, when they do, must be done correctly. For example, at the top of the curve, missing four more questions can often drop an ACT score 3 – 5 points … and out of the Ivy League range. The last major cause is fear, which comes in many forms. There is fear of failure (often against a standard of success), fear of criticism, fear of letting parents or teachers down, etc. This cause is particularly lethal because a student can start thinking they are not doing well, and their fear increases which tends to shut down their clear thinking. Definition of Success Early in our first session we all agree on this definition of success. “Success is when you walk out of the actual exam and look back on all we
JANUARY 2018
have done and can honestly say, ‘I have done my very best with the time and priorities that I had.’” One key is that this definition is never a number, such as an SAT score or 1350 or an ACT composite of 28, because if a student starts to approach these scores in practice many start to slack off, and if they don’t hit the score they feel like a failure. Success is doing you best, the process. I tell my students that if they simply do their best and keep working, the scores will take care of themselves. Proper Emphasis It is very important for my students to know that their score on one exam is not “life and death”, and certainly not the “end of the world” for their future. This causes way to much tension and fear. Rather, the exam is one step towards where they want to go. If it is not what they want or need, they can keep working and try again. Getting right back up after falling down is a very important “life lesson” that lasts long after a particular exam is forgotten. And we cover a lot of “life lessons” in our classes together.
Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles
My Famous Statement Before every practice exam and evaluation in our classes, I always say, “Have fun taking the test.” The first time, I add that this may seem like an oxymoron (words that don’t belong together), and then I explain further. When you are well prepared, when you have a strong sense that you can do well given your academic foundation and capabilities, and when you use our definition of success … then you will have fun taking the test because you will be showing others just how well you can to! Very often, my students tell me later that they heard my voice in their head when they opened the first page of their exam, and it helped greatly to reduce anxiety and enable them to do their very best. If You Would Like To Talk More About Your Student … Please contact me at 727-253-0639 or send me an e mail at wwa0811@mykolab.com. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country.
