It is a natural process for our bodies to change over time. Aging, childbirth, a variety of health issues, and both chronic and acute diseases can begin to take their toll. Organs age, get damaged or displaced, creating difficulty with or unwanted urination. Worse yet, as we age cancer can attack vital organs and hopefully these can be cured. These conditions may be difficult to even talk about, creating embarrassing situations for their sufferers. When any of these problems arise, it is important to find an empathetic, caring doctor who is not only qualified but makes you feel comfortable and can treat all aspects of

your personal complaints. Doctor David DiPiazza is that doctor. Although many physicians refer patients to him, they also choose him to treat both their family members and themselves. Patients travel from all over Florida to see this highly respected doctor, boardcertified in both Urology and Urogynecology. His office is conveniently located at 2148 Duck Slough Blvd, Suite 102, New Port Richey, (Trinity), Florida. For his patients’ convenience, he accepts most major insurance programs. Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

From The Editor Carla Selby

Hello September! This month marks the start of the academic year in many countries, not just in the U.S. In the Southern hemisphere, September 1st marks the beginning of the meteorological spring. I am an Astronomy and Astrology nerd, so for me, this month is pretty exciting. Meteor showers are expected to take place throughout the entire month of September to early October. So, if you’re into meteor showers as much as me, keep your telescopes ready, because it’s about to get lit! September is a marvelous month for swimming and partaking in water sports. The sea temperature is still amazingly high, averaging 84.2 Fahrenheit, which is as warm as the water surrounding Florida ever gets! So head out to the beaches and enjoy before it gets cold, rainy and those potential nasty Tropical Storms and Hurricanes start threatening us. Also, September 16th marks my

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

one year anniversary with my husband, Matt Selby. I want to take a minute to tell him I love him and thank you for a spectacular first year of marriage, and here’s to 100 more, or at least 80…Everyone knows I am the oldest one of the two so… And last but not least, I want to thank you all again…I know, I know, it seems to be a common theme on my Editorials lately, but hey… when did thanking people become a nuisance? So, in the spirits of being kind, I want to thank all of those people who reached out to me this past month and shared with me some amazing stories, some which will be featured in all of our issues of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles in the upcoming editions. Make sure you check them out! These are uplifting and positive stories from your own neighbors, your coworker’s brother in law, your best friend’s cousin’s aunt… these are stories from real members of your community that

are doing great things, and that truly deserve a chance to get featured so they can let everyone know about the wonderful impact they are making. If you have an amazing story that you’d want to share with us and the community, please, PLEASE reach out to me directly by emailing me at carla@nnlflorida.com Like I’ve said in my previous editorials, Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles is all about YOU… So if you feel you’re making a difference or are interested in making one, if you volunteer at a specific organization, a non-profit, a rescue shelter, or even if it’s only you…one person, trying to make a difference… I want to hear from you, so don’t be afraid to email me. I do enjoy reading your messages! I’ll leave you with these incredible words from Nelson Mandela, “We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in your hands to make a difference.”

Gregg Schindler State Farm Agency September Student Athletes of the Month

Julia Walkup demonstrating her record breaking speed (photo by Cate Miller) By Olivia Gray

The female Gregg Schindler State Farm Agency Student Athlete of the Month, Julia Walkup, went slack-jawed when asked about her hobbies other than her sport, struggling to come up with any possible answer other than “more swimming.” “I don’t have time for anything else. I just swim,” Walkup said, smiling. Between four AP classes, honors band, club swimming, and numerous school clubs at J.W. Mitchell High School, Walkup manages to balance all of her activities, including high school swim

8

events and practices. Four years of participating in high school swimming increased her abilities to manage her time, and earned her a spot near the top of the senior class. Walkup broke multiple records during her high school swimming career. Her best times were recorded during her 200 free event, where she swam from wall-to-wall four times in 1:54.45. Walkup also competed in the 200 free relay with three other swimmers, setting a record time of 1:43.65. Walkup competes as one of the team captains for her senior swim season. She leads by example and motivates teammates, using encouragement

to strengthen the team’s performance during meets. “I’m not here to discipline anyone. I’m here to be a leader, so I always want to be happy, tell them they’re doing a great job, but also command respect so that we can all be cohesive and not have everyone going everywhere,” Walkup said. The support that Walkup receives from her parents and swim coaches influences her skills and shapes her into the dedicated athlete she is today. “I’d like to thank my parents for driving me to all kinds of places and waking up at four in the morning to drive me to practice; Coach Casey, who taught me work ethic

when I was just starting out; and Coach Sue, who has always pushed me to be the best I can be,” Walkup said. Walkup wishes to swim for New York University once she finishes high school and be a part of the journalism program that is offered there. An official visit in October is marked on her to-do list. The male Gregg Schindler State Farm Agency Student Athlete of the Month, junior Nick Gabrelcik, is a leading player on the boys’ golf team. Averaging four strokes under par for nine holes, Gabrelcik has won each match as an individual against Fivay, Zephryhills and Land O’ Lakes to date. He is also the

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

Nick Gabrelcik sizing up his shot (photo by Nick Piccione) youngest in FSGA history to win the Amature Match Play held this past August at the Golden Ocala & Equestrian Club. In prior events, Gabrelcik placed 4th in the state championship during his sophomore year and won the Florida Junior Tour on August 20th. Gabrelcik also enjoys playing basketball and football for fun when not practicing driving, chipping, and putting. However, golf is the one sport that

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

Gabrelcik never gave up on. “Golf is just fun to me. It’s a sport that I got into and never seemed to get out of,” Gabrelcik said. A trick Gabrelcik uses to consistently hit shots well is repetition during practice and warm-ups. This helps him stay on track during actual matches and keeps his score below par. “You get better at hitting each time you do something, so if you work on something every day and keep doing it you will never

get worse and will only improve,” Gabrelcik said. Two influences that have impacted Gabrelcik and his golf game are his older brother and his coach, who’s an instructor at Innisbrook Golf Resort. “My brother is 21 and is in the Professional Golf Management program at Florida Gulf Coast University. My coach, Kyah Htet, really helped me progress throughout the years by working

on my game individually using all of my clubs to help me diversify my skills,” Gabrelcik said. Gabrelcik verbally committed to the University of North Florida in his sophomore year to play on the men’s golf team. Both Gabrelcik and Walkup represent the Mustangs and continue to demonstrate integrity during and after their respective seasons. Congratulations to these outstanding athletes.

Tech Talk with Bob: Keyboard Shortcuts By Bob Dalles Keyboard shortcuts allow you to perform certain command functions that you most often do with the mouse. Fortunately, the Microsoft Windows User Interface provides multiple ways to execute commands. By pressing a specific combination of keys on your keyboard, you can maintain your keyboard prowess by not having to stop and reach for the mouse every time you want to execute a common command. The best way to understand this is to play along. Sit in front of your computer and perform the following keyboard shortcuts as I describe them. If you are not able to do that right now, then just read on and try it later. I am using a Windows 10 computer and the Microsoft “WordPad” application to demonstrate. Most Windows computers have the application “WordPad” installed on them. Search “WordPad” on your computer and then select it. WordPad should open

12

into a blank document ready for you to type. Now type your name. To print this document using the mouse, you would click the “File” menu (located at the upper left side of the screen). The menu opens and then you would click “Print” to open the “Print” dialogue box. Once you are in the “Print” dialogue box, you would usually click “Print” to print the document. If you want to save paper, click “Cancel” to abort the print command. Now let’s try it using the keyboard shortcut for the print command (Ctrl+P). Hold down the “Ctrl” key with your left hand and tap the “P” key one time with your right

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • info@NNLFlorida.com

hand. When the print dialogue box opens you may release the “Ctrl” key. If you look closely you will see that the “Print” command in the print dialogue box is highlighted. If you press the “Enter” key (on the right side of your keyboard) the document will print. Now here’s a new keystroke (“Esc”), the Escape key is located at the top left side of the keyboard. Tap it once and it will give you the same result as clicking the “Cancel” command in the print dialogue box. Some other keyboard shortcuts using the “Ctrl” key are: Crtl+O (the letter O, not the number zero) is the same as clicking the “File” menu and then selecting “Open” which presents the “Open” dialogue box which allows you to open another document. Remember how to abort the command? Tap the “Esc” key once. Ctrl+S (which is the same as clicking “File” then “Save”) presents the “Save” dialogue box which allows you to save a document. Ctrl+N (which is the same as clicking “File” menu and selecting “New”) which creates a new

SEPTEMBER 2018

blank document. Please note: If you have not saved the current document you have open, the “New” command will prompt you to save your current document first. Using Ctrl+P, Ctrl+S, Ctrl+O, Ctrl+N, and Ctrl+P can speed up your interaction when giving your computer commands. The “Esc” key will cancel these commands if you change your mind. Whether you use these keyboard shortcuts or not is completely up to you. I suggest you try them from time to time to see if you like them. Have a tech question? Email it to TechTalk-TBNL@BobTheComp uterGuy.NET. Questions will be selected by the popularity of a topic and answered in this column. If you have a more urgent need or have a unique situation you may schedule an appointment with one of my Professionally Certified Technicians by calling 727-534-4000. The Chiropractor With a “Difference” – Dr. Stephen J. Unger By Tom Bostock When is a chiropractor’s practice not just a traditional one? When he is Dr. Stephen Unger of Trinity, at 1820 on appropriately named “Wellness Lane,” a state-of-the-art practice employing cutting edge equipment, the latest techniques and a few surprises. Who is Dr. Unger and what makes him different from many of his colleagues? Initially educated at St. Leo’s University and training as physical therapist, a horrendous accident involving a collision with a Ford pickup truck at 70 miles an hour and a chance meeting with a physical therapist/chiropractor changed the course of his education forever. Although his primary surgeon told him he needed an immediate operation and then another, his new doctor assured him that they would be able to work through his injuries through therapy and chiropractic treatment, without needing surgery. After fully recovering, Dr. Unger was so impressed with the potential of helping people through chiropractics; he changed his major, attending Palmer University’s College of

16

Chiropractic, receiving his degree as a Doctor of Chiropractic. He began to practice in 2007. I mentioned surprises at the beginning of the article. Consider this. You wake up on Monday morning feeling feverish and aching all over. Now, you must to call the doctor, make an appointment and drive to his office. After signing in, you sit in the waiting room with other sick

people, waiting to be called into an examination room. After being treated by the doctor, still feeling sick, you take your prescription to your local drug store to get it filled before you can return home. Is this better? Again, you feel bad but instead of following that other routine, potentially exposing yourself to unknown diseases and pathogens, you do something

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

entirely different. Opening your computer, you click on an ap and are connected to a fully licensed medical doctor who is another important part of Dr. Unger’s unique practice. He diagnoses your problem during your e-visit and prescribes the proper treatment while you sit in the comfort of your own home. But, the service doesn’t stop there. If you called before 2:30 PM, the medicine is delivered directly to your door from their in-house pharmacy service. Which scenario would you prefer?

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

Dr. Unger does something unusual in our hurry up society, he actually listens, as part of his diagnostic process. A new patient came to his office before flying out of town the next day. Although his patient indicated that her other doctor had taken an X-ray and declared that she was fit to fly, Dr. Unger’s in-house X-ray showed something entirely different. Previously noting respiratory distress and both back, lung pain and coughing, he immediately sent her to the hospital where she was treated for

a pulmonary embolism. Untreated, it could easily have killed her. It was that extra ounce of caring that made the difference. Dr Unger noted that “I take a little more time with all of my patients.” To be sure that he is current on the latest advances in his field, Dr. Unger has gone the extra mile for his patients; he is a board-certified chiropractor. This means that he has taken the time to learn the latest techniques and proven his proficiency before a board of his peers, including 64 hours of additional training every two year. Some of his impressive credentials include certifications in Chiropractic, Youth Athletic Performance Through Exercise, Functional Trainiing, Manipulation Under Anesthesia, NonPharmacological Pain Management, and Certification in Operating Room Procedures. Dr Unger says that is “so that we can do the manipulations under anesthesia under operating room conditions.” “Most people come to see me when they are hurt but they also come to me when they are well.” Posters on the walls of his comfortably furnished waiting room attest to that. One poster shows some of the specialized services that are offered including: Male Testosterone Treatment, Bio

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • info@NNLFlorida.com

Identical Women Treatment, Medical Weight Loss, Injectable Vitamins, and Sexual Enhancement, to name a few of them. An initial blood test analyzes your white blood cells. This allows Dr. Unger to determine how micronutrients are working in both your body and blood stream so that he can recommend options for you. With the most modern equipment and techniques, Dr. Unger’s goal is to make his patients stronger than when they first visited him. His specific sports-related exercises are designed to do just that. Most importantly is the poster that states the vision that Dr. Unger and his 50 employee, 8 doctor and several nurse practitioners practice subscribes to: “To live in a society that places high value on personal wellness and holistic disease prevention.” You can’t argue with that! Open Monday through Friday, 8 AM – 6 PM, you don’t have to suffer. Call 727 264 8888 and say hello to Florida Wellness and Rehab, Stephen J. Unger D.C. and say goodbye to pain - 1820 Wellness Lane, Bldg 4, Trinity, FL. Visit his website for more information @ www.chiropractortrinity.com.

KUMON Math & Reading Center Enables Students to Aim High By Lisa Stephens While school is back in session, many parents wonder, “Is my child getting enough or are they really equipped to excel in school?” KUMON Math and Reading Center owner and Director, Roopa M. Palakkat, is ready and willing to make sure each child is prepared for their current and future levels of education. Together, with her husband, Max, they opened the KUMON center in New Port Richey-Trinity in February, 2018. When in search of a small business opportunity to operate themselves, they turned to what had provided success for their own family. “We looked at many small business opportunities,” revealed Max. However, Roopa had hoped for a family business that would benefit her community as well. The answer came to them when they observed the success their own children had experienced with the KUMON program. “I saw what this had done for my children and I wanted to share that with other families,” Roopa said. The math and reading program at

20

the KUMON Center provides students with an opportunity to develop reading and math skills that will enable them to achieve excellence in both subjects. When asked about the difference between KUMON and other learning or tutoring centers, Roopa explained what sets KUMON apart. “Here, the program is individualized to each student and is based on ability, rather than age or grade. Students develop skills to become independent learners. As their instructor, I guide and instruct them so they can think for themselves while they work through the lessons,” she explained. KUMON has a specialized curriculum which places students in a level comfortable to them when they begin the program. “We don’t have instructors standing in front of the class giving lectures to students while they take notes,” she said. Once students are placed at a certain level, they work through assignments in class and at home. Through daily practice, students further develop their skills for each level and take tests before moving up to the next. “We

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • info@NNLFlorida.com

Roopa and Max Palakkat and their children focus on mastery so they’ll be successful at the next level. Students achieve more when they work at their own pace and we enable them to do that,” she said. Ages as early as three are welcome to the KUMON center in New Port Richey. “This program helps younger

SEPTEMBER 2018

students transition to different school levels,” Roopa explained. While the average student at the center is in preschool, elementary or middle school, they also welcome and work often with high school students, as well. It’s never too late to start the KUMON program. “Standards are

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

high and we can work with any school curriculum,” advised Roopa. The KUMON method takes a linear approach, step by step, to achieve mastery in one area before moving to the next. “This approach boosts their confidence and these principals can be applied to life skills as well,” she explained. Without the use of technology, this pencil and paper approach also develops brain power when it comes to problem solving.

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

“Students first master one skill before proceeding on to the next,” Roopa said. KUMON is a long term program with daily expectations. To learn about the program or enroll, parents and students first attend an orientation meeting. Students take a placement test during this meeting and the results are discussed with the parent. This original meeting lasts about an hour and there is no fee. Once enrolled,

students go to the center twice a week and work on each subject for half an hour. They are timed while they work. Homework is also assigned and those lessons take approximately 2030 minutes. These assignments build accuracy and speed as well. After one month of enrollment, Roopa meets with parents to discuss how things are going with the student. “Communication with the parents is critical so I welcome meetings during non-class time. And because parental support is important for overall student success, it is important to us that we continue to communicate with parents,” she shared. The math program begins with simple counting and continues through calculus. The methods used with the KUMON program enable students to absorb the concepts taught in school as well. All work is corrected to 100% so that students will understand why they made a mistake. Homework is graded and corrected to 100% as well. “They learn from their mistakes,” Roopa explained. Roopa watches each student as a parent would. “It gives me satisfaction to see students progress to each stage and to see that they are prepared for the next

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • info@NNLFlorida.com

level.” Since opening the center in February, Roopa has worked as the Director. Max explained that owners of the KUMON centers must play an active role in operating the facility. It is a requirement of KUMON that owners are not absentee owners and must physically be at the center during hours of operation to ensure the KUMON methods are in place and implemented. Owners/Directors invest many hours of their time for training prior to opening their centers. “The process took about two years for training and evaluations and the training continues even after you open,” he said. For Roopa, the experience has been even better than she thought it would be. “I know this is what I’m supposed to do. This business fit our values and philosophy. For me, this is a greater good. A service that can last a lifetime for students. KUMON Math and Reading Center of New Port Richey-Trinity is located at 4018 Little Road, New Port Richey in the Grand Trinity Plaza. Florida Hospital North Pinellas Using Ultrasound Waves to Treat Prostate Cancer Florida Hospital North Pinellas is now offering High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) procedure to treat patients with prostate cancer. HIFU uses focused sound waves to create heat at a specific point and that heat effectively destroys the targeted tissue. It is a one-time, outpatient procedure that allows men to return to their normal lifestyle within just a few days. Florida Hospital North Pinellas Urologist Dr. Paul Arnold recently treated his first patient at Florida Hospital North Pinellas using the procedure. “I have worked with prostate cancer patients for nearly 20 years and have seen everything in the way of treatment options and related side effects,” said Dr. Paul Arnold. “I am so excited to be able to offer men a less invasive treatment option that significantly reduces those effects.” Unlike radiation, HIFU is clean energy and can be reapplied as many times as needed, if necessary. This procedure helps physicians more

Now is the time! Must-Dos to Improve your Hurricane Safety The tropics are quiet now, but for how much longer? Even though forecasters have predicted a less than active hurricane season this year, we must all be prepared. The month of August sees more than three times the number of named storms as July, and almost double the number of June and July storms combined. Remember, it only takes one! The 1992 hurricane season produced only six named storms and one subtropical storm. However, one of those named storms was Hurricane Andrew. State Farm agent Gregg Schindler is reminding

32

property owners in Tri County area that a little preparation can make a big difference when it comes to safety and security during hurricane season. Gregg recommends the following easy tips to help homeowners protect themselves and their property: Review your insurance coverage. Make sure you have the right amount and type of insurance. Call or visit my office today. Create a home inventory. Make a list of your possessions and their estimated value. Protect your property. Stock plywood and materials you may need to board up

out the storm in your home (if local authorities permit you to stay), or establish a safe place inland. Plan an escape route. Tell relatives where you will be. Put together an emergency kit. The kit should include basics such as water, food, first aid supplies, clothing, blankets, and important documents. Store your kit in airtight plastic bags or a plastic storage container with a lid. It’s a design concept is known as town center or lifestyle center.” Health enthusiasts, vegans and vegetarians rejoice! The Mitchel project will boast the first-ever Sprouts Farmers Market ever opened in Pasco County. There is no commitment on the size of the store but, in April, Ashley Kritzer, Senior Reporter for Tampa Bay Business Journal, wrote that “Sprouts did not say how large the store would be, but the vast majority of its new stores are around 30,000 square feet. The grocer did not specify a construction time line or potential

opening date. (bizjournals.com.com/news/2018/ 04/25/pasco/-county land). Kritzer noted that “Sprouts is known for its selection of private label products as well as competitively priced produce and organic items.” The variety of fresh fruits and vegetables makes it an ideal destination for today’s healthconscious consumers. After the initial development of the 30-acre tract, M&M Realty Partners, a New Jersey based company, has already secured the contract to develop the remainder of the 330-acre location. M&M is the same company who developed Market Place at Citrus Park in Hillsborough County. That location included a Costco, Aldi and the chain restaurant, Ford’s Garage, complete with a vintage car(tampabay.com). The remaining 300 acres are

planned to house up to 800 homes and approximately 1 million square feet of commercial space. Laura Kinsler, a Tribune staff writer, reported a conversation with Project Manager Debra Dremann: “I would say it’s fair to draw the comparison to Wiregrass,” she said. “We’re going to be developing 800,00 to 900,000 square feet in open-air marketing setting. We hope it can be game changing for west Pasco in the same way Wiregrass was for Wesley Chapel.” On their website, (kitsonpartners.com) the new owners of the west Pasco property outlined their optimistic future plans for the development of their one-of-a-kind business and residential community on the site of the former Mitchell Ranch Property: At Mitchell Ranch, K&P is

SEPTEMBER 2018

developing a one-of-a-kind community for all of the essentials in life: engaging, interactive and comfortable places to walk, shop, dine, entertain, relax and call home. Located in Pasco County, Florida (Tampa Bay region), Mitchell Ranch is planned as a fully integrated, mixed-use community embedded in nature and the surrounding community. Commercial and residential areas will be enhanced by open space, pocket parks and community gathering places. An extensive trail and walkway system will provide connectivity across the project. Mitchell Ranch’s main street district will be activated with great programming from community art festivals to holiday celebrations, serving as the main hub of activity in West Pasco. Residents and visitors will find a full range of

shopping and entertainment options. Residential housing options will include apartment residences and a variety of single family homes. Wetland preservation and lake areas throughout the community create a great setting for future residents of this vibrant go-to place envisioned for West Pasco. (kitsonpartners.com/ communities/Mitchell-ranch). Change is difficult in the best of times, and Trinity homeowners, way back in 2015, were concerned about the increase in traffic and potential for flooding and drainage issues a large shopping center could potentially cause. At a meeting of homeowners, from Trinity Oaks, Seven Springs. Park Lake, and adjacent communities, convened shortly after the project was announced, Trinity resident, Ron Levi, was particularly vocal about possible stormwater runoff. “I’m not trying to put a damper on what you’re Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

doing,” he said, “but I’m telling you you’re going to flood out our neighborhood.” Residents were assured by Vice President and Project Manager Dreemann that Kitson’s engineers “are keenly aware of the area’s drainage problems.” Kitson’s Planning Division leader, Gary Nelson, noted that enough fill would be brought in to “elevate

the vast majority of the site 2 (to) 3 feet.” This would allow the drainage ponds to contain any potential stormwater. The question of the company’s commitment to wetlands and wildlife habitat was also brought up (tbo.com/pascocounty/homeowners-air-trinity-de velopment-concerns-20150320). A wiseman once observed that nothing great was ever achieved

without effort. There are almost always growing pains involved. This project will be similarly tested but the close proximity of a fullservice shopping center with all of the name brand retailers currently missing from the Pasco County shopping scene far outweighs the inconvenience of the construction site. Give it a little while and then let’s go shopping! SEPTEMBER 2018
