Growing up in Tarpon Springs, an East Lake High School alumnus, Dr. Albert earned his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from The University of Florida and has been honored with numerous awards and is a proud member of several dental associations since opening his practice in 2003.

By Deborah Bostock-Kelley Past the comfortable waiting room with a big screen TV, free wi-fi, a coffee and snack bar and a vintage video game console is the doctor’s consultation room. On the desk, to the far left of his computer sits a Spider-man coffee mug. The message of that movie franchise so resonated with Dr. Jeremy Albert, DMD, MS, a specialist in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, that he paraphrased it and applies it to his successful practice, Albert Family Orthodontics.

The Future of Our Website In today’s technological era having a good looking and userfriendly website is more important than you think. For us, our website mainly served as a backlog for all seven magazines’ feature articles and local stories. Having all that information available online made it easy for both, advertisers and consumers, to share these fantastic community articles with friends, family and colleagues from their phone, computer or tablet. If you’ve checked our Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles website, nnlflorida.com recently you may have noticed that; 1) The site is a little outdated, 2) A lot of the links are not working properly, 3) The website actually went down for a considerable amount of time and it is still malfunctioning, 4) Navigating through it and finding old articles from previous issues is very complicated, 5) Overall, it is not very user friendly... First of all, I want to personally apologize in the name of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles for any trouble or inconvenience this may have caused you. A few months ago, our web server collapsed, the site went down for a few days, a lot of links got broken and our hosting company was less than helpful in solving these issues. I personally tried to fix all the server and database issues but it was beyond my web programming experience. So I reached out to an old friend, who is a very experienced coder/programmer and had him

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

check out the site for us. My friend overwhelmed me with big and confusing programming terms that left my brain hurting, so I won’t do that to you. I will make it easier and give you a short analogy. Our current website can be compared to an old Blackberry phone; it was great when it first came out, everyone was impressed with the technology and the phone did everything it was supposed to do and more. Until Apple and Samsung came out with better, smarter phones dominating the market and the Blackberry devices became outdated. Sure, you can still find people that use a Blackberry phone (I don’t know anyone though, do you?), but if you could have a device with brand new technology, that’s way more efficient and delivered better results, wouldn’t you want it? Pretty much, my friend told me that our website, just like the good ol’ Blackberry, was obsolete and it was best to “get rid of it” and “get on with the times and upgrade” and that is exactly what we’re doing. We’re getting rid of the old, and coming hot with the new! Our current domain; nnlflorida.com will soon be redirected to our brand new, user-friendly, modern looking website:

tbnewsandlifestyles.com I am still working on transfering all the data and articles from our old website to this new one, so as of now, you’ll only be able to access some of our newest 2018 stories. We do have a section labeled “Digital Issues,” in

which you’ll find past digital volumes of our seven magazines, and you can actually read all articles from there. I included an online Calendar of Events where you’ll be able to find some fun and family-friendly events happening in the greater Tampa Bay area. We will also feature delicious recipes, sports news and so much more! (But as of today, it is still a work in progress...so keep checking it regularly, as I am uploading fresh content on a daily basis!) All I can say is that I am pretty excited about this project, as I had been looking to give our old website a “facelift,” for quite some time, so everything happened for a reason. I love our new look and I truly hope you do too, and hope you’ll find it user-friendly and easy to navigate. In the meantime, please email me directly at carla@nnlflorida.com with any website concerns you may have or if you have any local community stories that you want to share with us and our readers. Also, if you work or volunteer at a charity or non-profit organization, or if you’re a local advertiser planning a fun local event that would benefit the community and want help spreading the word, email me the information and I’ll gladly publish it on our brand new website so thousands of our local readers will have access to it. As always, thank you for your support and readership, and I sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we work hard to finalize this big website project.

SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: GETTING READY FOR FALL By Dr. Wayne Adams FALL EXAM DATES: SAT: October 6, November 3, December 1; ACT: September 8, October 27, December 8. Early August is roaring towards us with high schools starting, planning for college applications, getting ready for the PSAT, and all that happens in the fall. Seniors, check out your application dates for the type of admission you are seeking. More and more colleges are admitting up to half their classes or more with early admissions. The application dates are sooner, but the application dates normally are not the dates when your exam scores must be received … they are a little later. Go to the college’s website and find out the details. If your SAT and/or ACT scores are not where you want, or you are not sure about writing an outstanding college application essay, give me a call. Juniors, the PSAT in midOctober is the only qualifying examination for National Merit

8

Scholarships. These are very prestigious, and colleges are normally generous with additional academic scholarships to get National Merit Scholars. The only differences are that there are fewer questions in each section, and there is no essay. So when I prepare juniors for the PSAT, we do the full SAT Prep Class and I always recommend taking the SAT exam in early October as a “warm up”. Last year, I had two students who were national merit finalists (top 1% on their exam scores in the country). Sophomores, often you take the PSAT also. This does not count for National Merit Scholarships, but high schools often use the results to put you into an “academic track” for the rest of your high school years. It never hurts to be prepared, especially when this PSAT score may make the difference in your being admitted to advanced academic course(s) you may want later in high school. During the last year, I have noticed that more students are having problems scoring well in math. This is true for all levels of students: IB,

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • info@NNLFlorida.com

Cambridge, AP, Dual Enrollment, Honors, and Regular levels. Part if this problem has proven to be poor preparation in middle school. Another part has been “spotty” math teachers in high school. The net result is that students with high GPAs (3.0 – 4.4) have difficulty scoring above a 550 on the SAT or a 23 on the ACT.

JULY 2018

So now in class, my students do a customized, baseline evaluation where the answers show how I would solve these problems – which is often different than taught in reference books. Years ago I realized that if there were 100 SAT or ACT math questions, I could do half of them in my head in fifteen seconds or less

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

because I know the strategies, have practiced a lot, and am strong with quick math calculations. Half of the remaining questions might take thirty seconds to solve. The remaining 25 might take a minute or longer. This approach puts my students into my head for classifying and solving math questions. The most important step in scoring is to recognize the type of problem, and then select the strategy and best tool to use. Since many students are generally intimidated by the harder math questions, we now have part of a session where we go through the toughest math questions I can find on the exam and see how easy they really are … if you know how to approach them and what you are doing. My saying is, “Everything is easy when you know how to do it; everything is hard when you don’t know how to do it.” One of my IB students recently jumped 160 points on the SAT math alone. Would love to talk with you further about your student. Just send me an e mail at wwa0811@mykolab.com or call me at 727-253-0639.

Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve 200 – 350 points on the Writing, Reading, Writing and Essay, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to eight of the top ten universities in the country, eighteen of the top twenty-five, and many schools in Florida. These schools include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), University of Virginia, NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Air Force and Merchant Marine Service Academies, Penn State, Purdue, Ohio State, LSU, Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, FIU, New College of Florida, Stetson, and Julliard – Manhattan - New England and Berkley Conservatories of Music. Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. This year, he also tutored three juniors who scored at the national merit finalist/semi-finalist levels on the most recent PSAT. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

Tech Talk with Bob: Introduction to Malware Malware is software designed to break into and possibly harm your computer system without you knowing. Malware almost always hides itself. Some malware can even take control of your computer. There are many different types of malware which includes: viruses, Trojans, logic bombs, adware and spyware, rootkits, worms, etc. Viruses can be difficult to identify. They are sneaky and come in many different forms. A macro virus will exploit applications. When it's activated, it can cause significant damage and spread itself to other computers. For example, it can send itself as an attachment to all e-mail addresses in your address book. A Trojan is named after the Trojan horse in Greek mythology. A Trojan can be mistaken to be an application like a screensaver or a game that you may unknowingly download and run because it looks cool or is fun to play. This type of malware is usually a free program you see on a website or is often recommended via email from a well-intentioned friend. Trojans do

12

not typically harm your computer’s operation but they could create a backdoor into your system and establish communication with the attacker, giving remote control of your computer to the attacker. A logic bomb is malware that runs when predefined conditions have been met. For example, logic bombs usually lay dormant until a date and time is reached, then they execute. Their damage can range

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • info@NNLFlorida.com

from minor glitches to completely wiping out your computer’s hard disk drive. Adware plays, displays or downloads advertisements to your computer. Adware can spy on your browsing activity and display advertisements based on your browsing history. Spyware often collects personal information about your internet surfing habits and passwords. Spyware may also install other programs that can change your computer’s settings or redirect web browsers to unwanted sites. It is designed to perpetrate identity theft by accessing your online accounts with online retailers and financial institutions, such as PayPal, banks and other e-commerce sites. The attacker can use the data gathered to remove funds from those accounts or

JULY 2018

make unauthorized transactions. Keyloggers and other software are used to capture usernames and passwords for these types of sites as you log in. Installing anti-malware software on your computer is the first step in protecting yourself. Second, new out-of-the-box, anti-malware software needs to have all of its settings properly configured to provide you with the highest level of protection possible. It is best to have a certified professional configure this software as soon as it is installed. Third, keep the software up to date. Have a tech question? Email it to TechTalk-TBNL@BobTheComput erGuy.NET. Questions will be selected by the popularity of a topic and answered in this column. If you have a more urgent need or have a unique situation you may schedule an appointment with one of my Professionally Certified Technicians by calling 727-534-4000. Two Young Artists Making Tampa Bay Look Good By Carla Selby What do you get when you combine a couple of extremely talented young artists, and some of Tampa Bay’s most beautiful scenery? An award-winning music video with an exceptional catchy beat that is exposing the entire world to the beauty of our city! Musician Johnny Maio and Videographer Caleb Oosterling, both 22, joined forces and produced an incredible music video titled “Hometown” which showcases many of the sites and scenes of Tampa Bay, all to an upbeat, infectious original song, written by Maio himself. The collaborative effort recently awarded these two artists the title of “Best Music Video” at the “Intendence Film Festival” in Denver, on June 10, 2018. Johnny Maio, a multiinstrumentalist singer/songwriter, moved to Tampa from Chicago with his musically-inclined family in 1997, when he was only 2 years old. Johnny's love for music and dance developed early in his life and can be partially attributed to his parents' support. “I started taking

26

Suzuki piano lessons at age 3. My parents always encouraged me and helped me find the right piano teacher, so I didn’t get bored and learned the styles that inspired me,” said Jonny. At only 6 years old, little Johnny admittedly fell madly in love with the “Riverdance” video and decided to take Irish Dance lessons, which proudly awarded him 5th place on a national Irish dance competition. Johnny’s passion for the arts continued to grow through the years, and the same musical passion seems to run in the Maio Family. “My dad plays classical flute, bagpipes and Irish tin whistle. My mom was a traveling folksinger when she met my dad on Mackinac Island, Michigan. He was the fifer at the fort, and she was singing in a hotel,” Johnny said. His sisters also share the Maio musical gene; his older sister plays the cello and Johnny’s twin sister plays the harp. “We play Irish music together as a family around St. Patrick’s day,” added Johnny. I will try to stay in touch with Johnny and find out where they’ll be playing next year so I can personally witness the Irish musical magic of the Maio family. I’ll make sure

Johnny wrote the lyrics of a catchy and upbeat song titled “Hometown” and played all instruments in the award-winning video, which showcases some of Tampa’s most beautiful scenes, like this one over at Curtis Hixon Park. to keep you posted as well! Johnny Maio, who admires early jazz guys like Fats Waller and James P. Johnson, and other musicians like Vince Guaraldi and Harry Connick Jr. graduated from the USF School of Music in 2017 and has worked as a Busch Gardens musician for the past three years. When asked which instruments he played, Johnny said “I

JULY 2018

play piano and keyboards, and since working at Busch Gardens I’ve also learned to play and perform on guitar, bass, and drums… and I also get to sing there!” Wow, I don’t think there’s anything this talented musician cannot do! Caleb Oosterling, a Tampa native, began his award-winning videography career while a student at Wiregrass

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

Ranch High School. He and wife, Gabrielle, proudly own and operate Oosterling Videography, where they also offer professional photography services. “Caleb and I started producing music videos to my original songs last year,” said Johnny, who in the manner of Owl City’s Adam Young, played all the instruments and recorded the Hometown song in his Carrollwood bedroom on his Mac computer. After a few bedroom recording sessions, Johnny contacted Caleb and decided to hit the road together to capture some of the beauty of our beloved city of Tampa Bay. Next, the Oosterlings worked their production and editing magic in their local home studio. The resulting music video is reaping widespread praise and attention, most recently in the form of film festival accolades. Less than one month since its release, Hometown has been named “Film of the Month” for May 2018 at New York’s Oasis Short Film Festival and like previously stated, was featured at “Intendence Film Festival” where it won “Best Music Video.” Hometown has also been accepted by international festivals, so worldwide audiences will see the beautiful lights of Curtis Hixon Park, the Bull Fountain of USF, The Florida Aquarium, the gigantic Bucs flag, the Lightning bolts, the lovely

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

Hillsborough Bay, the Kumba roller coaster at Busch Gardens, and many other unique local treasures. Maio and Oosterling are happy the video is bringing attention to the Tampa area, as the guys are both proud of their city. “One of the festivals asked us what our budget was for the music video. Their lowest category was $5000.00. All it really cost was a tank of gas and about $35.00 in Chick-Fil-A drive through,” said Maio. Truly a labor love from two very talented young artists, dedicated to their Hometown, Tampa. Oosterling and Maio are currently working on two new videos. “One’s an original jazz tune called ‘I’ve Been Thinking About You’ where I’ll be playing all the instruments and tap dancing with my friend, Ashlyn Bolton, who runs a tap company called Rhythm and Sole,” said Maio. “The other video is for an Irish original song. I’ll be Irish Dancing in that one,” he added. Oosterling and Maio are already scouting different local spots and coming up with original ideas to showcase our beautiful city again in these two upcoming videos. So would Johnny ever move away? “Tampa has a lot to offer and it’s a great place to grow up. I love this city and can’t imagine ever leaving for a long time,” said Jonny. “However, I am curious about Ireland because of our musical heritage. I believe I’d enjoy spending time there.” To conclude this uplifting story, I’ll leave you with Johnny’s own words of wisdom to other young aspiring musicians: “It’s ok to be inspired by other people, but be sure to find your own style and be true to your own inspiration. If you try to copy other musicians’ fads and trends you won’t be saying anything new and you won’t be true to your own passions.” Please make sure to check out the video “Hometown” on youtube whenever you get a chance, subscribe to Johnny’s channel and show some support for our local talent.

A Taste of Bundt Cake Changed a Career By Deborah Bostock-Kelley

In December 2015, Tammy Mencia experienced serendipity. She was a longtime successful mortgage broker in Jacksonville and had just tasted a sample of a bundt cake that would transform her destiny and future career path. She and husband Ralph had been looking at different franchise opportunities and she was impressed by the moistness and flavor of the bundt cake. She googled the company to learn more information and discovered Nothing Bundt Cakes fit the individually-owned franchise business profile they’d been seeking with a future move to Tampa. After months of an intensive screening process, culminating in a three-hour interview with the franchise president in the home office in Dallas, Texas, Tammy and Ralph debuted Nothing Bundt Cakes in March 2017 in the Village Center, Carrollwood. Open the door of Nothing Bundt Cakes and the heaven-sent aroma of fresh baked goodness and friendly staff offering tasty samples immediately greets you. Inside the quaint shop, decorated in pale yellow and blues, displays showcase the different sizes of the bundt cakes, along with accoutrements to accompany the cakes like décor, candles, serving plates, and party accessories that make the shop feel even more homey and welcoming. Bundt cakes come in 9 flavors and multiple sizes- from full-size 8 to 10-inch cakes and large individual

serving size called bundtlets to bitesize “bundtinis” and each are complimented by cream cheese frosting. “We offer 10 flavors of cake in 4 different sizes – 9 flavors we have all the time and we have a featured flavor that lasts 1 to 2 months,” said Tammy. “It is all baked in the bakery with a full kitchen in the back and are made with fresh ingredients including fresh eggs, real butter and cream cheese. Our signature cream cheese frosting – is delicious and our cakes are super moist.” Standard bundt cake flavors are chocolate, chocolate chip, classic vanilla, red velvet, white chocolate raspberry, carrot, lemon, marble, pecan praline, carrot and cinnamon swirl. They also offer feature flavors on a monthly basis that include Chocolate Turtle, Strawberries and Creme, Lemon Raspberry, Pumpkin Spice, Peppermint Chocolate Chip and currently offering Confetti until

Oct 1. A gluten-free chocolate chip cookie bundt cake flavor is available for those that suffer from a gluten allergy. Tammy’s personal flavor favorite is white chocolate raspberry and for a rotating feature flavor, pumpkin spice which will be available on October 1. “The difference in our cake is

JULY 2018

the texture of the cake and how moist it is. It's the first thing everyone says when they taste our cakes. We're famous for the thick frosting petals that adorn each of our cakes. Our signature frosting is made with velvety cream cheese and real butter. For a lighter touch, choose our drizzle frosting. Our cakes are unique and beautiful and can be decorated for any occasion. All of our decorations are handcrafted in the back of the bakery to add the personal touch for each person’s celebration.” The shop has a huge book to share ideas for different bundt cake uses. There are the typical birthday, retirement, anniversary and holiday suggestions, but then they offer innovative ideas like tiered wedding bundt and bundlet cakes, and even gender reveal bundt cakes. Tammy described her employees and the bakery's involvement in the community as the two things that she found most rewarding about being the co-owner

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

of Nothing Bundt Cakes. “I love all my employees. They’re what make me successful. It’s rewarding that I can provide jobs for them and they love working

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

for us.” Tammy has 14 employees, but is looking to hire a few more seasonal employees for the upcoming holidays. Though actively involved in the local community, the charity Nothing Bundt Cakes selected to sponsor is Joshua House, and the bakery provides monthly birthday cakes for the children. “We take them their own individual cake because some of the kids had never been able to celebrate a birthday. We love that part of it.” Though her long-term goal is to open many different locations, Tammy is in the process of opening her second location in Wesley Chapel, run by friend and business partner Lori Chait, by the close of 2017. “My partner in the Wesley Chapel location, Lori, is a friend of mine of 40 years, since third grade. She came here from Virginia to help me open the Carrollwood location and was so interested, that she and her husband wanted to get

involved and open the Wesley Chapel location.” Nothing Bundt Cakes offers a birthday club. Shoppers can sign up and receive a free bundlet on their birthday. Corporate also sends out E-newsletters with coupons and discounts to subscribers. A loyalty reward program provides a free matching bundt cake, bundtlet, bundtini after the purchase of 12 dozen bite-sized bundtinis, 12 bundlets or 12 bundt cakes. About ninety percent of advertising comes from word of mouth, from patrons coming into the shop off the street. Tammy also markets several days a week to local businesses and participates in local events throughout Carrollwood and Wesley Chapel. “I was looking for something different. My husband and I looked

at many franchises before this. None of them grabbed us like this did. This is a great brand. It only took the one taste and we knew instantly, definitely that this was it, that this was something we could build,” said Tammy. “I have so much less stress in my life now. It’s very rewarding. I wanted to work for myself instead of somebody else. It’s a business that everyone is always happy and celebrating some special event in their life or someone else’s.” Nothing Bundt Cakes is located 13252 N Dale Mabry Highway. Hours are MondayFriday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Hours will be extended for the holidays. For more information, call or visit www.nothingbundtcakes.com/ba kery/fl/tampa-carrollwood.

Catch your Bucket List Tarpon with Epic Sport Fishing By Matt Selby

Fishing is one of the most accessible sports in Florida. With Miles of beautiful Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic ocean coastline, as well as tens of thousands of Freshwater lakes and ponds, it's no wonder Florida is known as the fishing capital of the World! I've been fishing since I was old

32

enough to hold a rod and reel and have been a fishing guide here in Tampa Bay for almost 10 years. Through my many trips and expeditions during the past decade, I've been able to accumulate some of the best fishing spots from Pasco to Hernando, even down to the Florida Keys and some great places at the east coast, as well. I

specialize in fishing the Gulf of Mexico waters, from my hometown of Tarpon Springs to the beautiful Clearwater. I grew up here and have put in countless hours studying the migration patterns and habits of the fish in these local waters. Speaking of migrating fish, Tarpon have invaded our waters in thicker numbers than I've seen

JULY 2018

in over a decade! Tarpon are known as a "bucket list" fish to some and an absolute addiction to others. I fall into the latter category. Ever since I caught my first Tarpon in my parents' backyard as a kid, I've been fascinated with their prehistoric look and raw power. There's not much that rivals a Tarpon's strength or their acrobatics. I've Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

been fortunate enough to catch them on just about every form of tackle, from lightweight spinning reels to stout Grouper digging gear in local passes, to Fly-fishing them in knee-deep water. "Captain Matt IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Unbelievable fishing experience for my Brother's first ever Saltwater trip! The pinfish we used for bait was probably in the water no longer than 10 seconds before we jumped our first fish. We ended the day with 3 Tarpon to the boat and 5 total bites. Our biggest Tarpon was over 120 pounds! My Brother has never been so happy in his life! Matt is the best!" - Tammy I love getting anglers of all ages and skill levels on their dream fish. It's not always a guarantee when targeting a specific species, but with my experience and local knowledge

mixed with a little bit of lady luck, you'll be battling a monster fish of your own. We catch Tarpon through the end of July so if it's a Tarpon you're going after, call me today! I only have a few dates left! Captain Matt Selby Epic Sport Fishing 727-253-5893

“Excel” Continued from page 1 Mahoney brings years of experience to the life of each child and parent when they select ECLA as their preschool. “My heart has always been in working with children. This position affords me the ability to still fulfill my love of teaching, while simultaneously challenging me with running a successful business and dealing with all that entails. I love being a positive influence on our staff and students, and building relationships with our families,” she said. Mahoney graduated from Kent State University before teaching in public elementary schools for about ten years. In 2012, she started ECLA. “We opened our school with two teachers and three students,” she explained. Having grown each year, they have outgrown their current school and will be expanding for the upcoming school year! Pasco County has over 140 preschools. ECLA is one of just two preschools that received a 100% readiness rate for the 2016-2017 VPK school year. How did they do it? By covering all the bases parents look for when considering a private preschool for their child. From safety concerns to curriculum, Mahoney and the staff at ECLA want parents to know the children enrolled at ECLA are considered “family” and the measures taken to provide an excellent experience are in place. Setting High Standards of Staff Equals Student Success Each staff member is fully background checked according to the requirements of the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and goes through multiple types of criminal history checks. Lead teachers hold a CDA or higher certification in Early Childhood Education and assistant teachers meet all DCF requirements. Each staff member is also CPR and First Aid certified as well. Many of the teachers at ECLA are long term staff that has worked together as a team for years. When it comes to learning, ECLA uses state of the art technology to ensure each student is ready and capable of entering kindergarten with the knowledge

34

and experience needed to succeed. “Kindergarten isn’t what it was when you and I were little, and the expectations are very high for our little ones,” she explained. To prepare students, ECLA uses a wellrounded curriculum that includes early literacy, math, science and social/emotional skills. “Our

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • info@NNLFlorida.com

curriculum combined with our amazing staff is what builds a love for learning in our students and ensures they are ready for kindergarten,” she exclaimed. ECLA uses state approved Creative Curriculum as well as the Souns program for early literacy. Lessons are guided based on Kindergarten

JULY 2018

readiness skills and developmentally appropriate practice. Mahoney explained that ECLA executes a program based on social and emotional development as well as skill building to make sure all students are prepared for entry into elementary school. SMART Board technology, portfolios, centers and Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

journals are used to keep students interested and engaged in the learning process. Communication is Key Once parents drop off their little ones, the communication and knowledge of the day does not end there. ECLA closes the communication gap with the use of the My Brightwheel app for smartphones. Parents no longer have to depend on their child to tell them about details of their day because, with use of this app, they already know the little details their

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

child might forget to tell them at the end of the day. Each classroom is equipped with an iPad that is used to communicate with parents throughout the day! Parents are notified throughout the day of all the happenings ranging from meal information, snacks, rest periods, daily activities, diaper changes, potty training and more. Photos and videos are also sent to share special moments and parents are welcome to send messages back and forth with the teachers throughout the day. “This communication tool is essential to our parent-teacher

partnership!” Mahoney shared. Progress Reports are sent home with students three times a year. Parents also have access to their child’s portfolio along the way so they have knowledge of their child’s strengths and weaknesses and what they’re learning in the classroom. A Safe Environment to Learn and Play According to Mahoney, the safety of each student is high on the priority list. The facility is equipped with more than twenty cameras in the school and playground areas. Additional cameras are positioned in the walkway areas. Access from outside the school can only be done granted by employees and a camera is stationed at that access point so those inside are fully aware of who is gaining access to the building. The interior door allowing access to the classrooms is also secure and can only be opened by an individual pin number. Each child is checked in and out by a parent using a biometric fingerprint scan in the front office. Once that child enters the classroom, they are checked in again by their teacher using the Brightwheel app. This security

measure ensures each student is fully accounted for. Hours of operation are 6:30 am to 6:30 pm. If needs of the community change, Mahoney explains they do hold a 24/7 license and can expand those hours if needed. She welcomes parents in search of a private preschool to consider taking a free tour of the facility. They also offer a free VPK program from 9:00am to 12:00pm for students who are 4 years old on or before September 1. Due to the new expansion of the ECLA and the addition of the two new classrooms, there are still several VPK spots open for the upcoming school year! Excel Creative Learning Academy can meet the care and educational needs you want for your child! “Albert Ortho” Continued from page 1 Dr. Albert doesn’t pass his patients on to a second doctor in the practice. There is no second doctor. He is there because he loves both the community and what he does and another doctor may not have the same enthusiasm or passion. It is him alone dividing his time between his practice in Trinity and Palm Harbor. Imagine being so impressed with a dentist from your childhood that you follow in his footsteps? Dr. Albert, himself a braces patient, fell in love with dentistry in his teens and knew that was a career path he wanted to take. A huge fan of puzzles, Dr. Albert felt a similarity between doing a puzzle and perfecting a patient’s smile. While in dental school, he made the decision to focus on orthodontics. “I always liked puzzles as a little kid and that’s basically what orthodontics is – we’re trying to figure out how to get everything to fit together, discover where all the pieces go.” Dr. Albert has treated many orthodontic cases that are similar in their initial presentation, but is keenly

36

aware that every patient’s treatment is a little different. “The patients bring their own dynamics to their treatment. Sometimes it’s not a direct path you are taking but constantly adjusting and accommodating corrections. Orthodontics is really a process of accessing and recalculating treatment each time the patient comes in. It’s not just about the initial appliances or aligners that go on the teeth, but how you use those appliances and adapt to their progress.” Albert Family Orthodontics treats children and adults, and new patient evaluations are always free of charge. The first consultation visit includes a thorough exam, a complimentary panoramic x-ray, and a discussion of potential treatment options and costs. Along with a low initial down payment, Albert Family Orthodontics offers no-interest, in-house financing, Care Credit, as well as accepts most insurance that includes orthodontics. Albert Family Orthodontics offers the most advanced technology to help his patients be able to see in threedimensional view a replica of their teeth. Out is the antiquated tray impressions or molds of teeth. Dr.

Albert uses the iTero intraoral scanner to scan a patient’s mouth for braces, Invisalign, expanders and diagnostic study models. Not only does the 3-D scan show the current structure of the teeth but it can also produce a simulated outcome of what their teeth will look like after the completion of the expected treatment plan. Treatment time varies per each patient’s specific orthodontic problem, but in general, ranges from 6 to 24 months. The average timeframe a person is in braces or Invisalign is

JULY 2018

approximately 18 months. While braces do come both in classic silver and clear, most teens still opt for the silver and colorful bands, enjoying them as a trendy version of mouth jewelry. Millennials and adults tend to gravitate to Invisalign because of the convenience and minimal intrusiveness on their lifestyle. Dr. Albert notes however that more and more teens are choosing Invisalign as well for their comfort and versatility for their active lifestyles.

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

“Invisalign is a series of clear trays that the patient wears for 1 week at time and we typically give them 8-12 trays each time they come in. They then progress through the trays in between the visits. We continually check them and ensure that they are fitting properly. Very small movements with each aligner, but over the treatment time, it moves the teeth to where we want.” Addition of the AcceleDent appliance to Invisalign treatment can reduce length of treatment time by 30%. AcceleDent applies a gentle vibration that helps increase the bone

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

and tooth remodeling process, which speeds the rate in which teeth can move. Based on recommendation by American Association of Orthodontists, Dr. Albert suggests initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at the first sign of orthodontic problems or no later than age 7. At this early age, orthodontic treatment may not be necessary, but helps determine the best time to begin treatment. Through his success of this practice, Dr. Albert is proud to give back to his community. He sponsors

local children’s sports teams, bands, and cheerleading throughout the year. He participates in the Smiles Change Lives charity by providing pro bono orthodontic services to low income qualified families in the community annually. Through his church, Cypress Meadows Community Church, he visits Haiti and Kenya on dental mission trips to provide dental services to those who would otherwise go without. “The first time I went there, we had a how-to-take-care-of-your-teeth talk and handed out toothbrushes. Later, they had a church meeting and all the kids were holding their toothbrushes,” he said. “I know if we’re not there helping them out, very likely no one is helping them out. It’s a pretty cool feeling to pay it forward, a lot of those kids never had something we as Americans take for granted – something as simple as a toothbrush.” Dr. Albert believes whether home or abroad, sharing your talents and gifts is important. “I personally feel that it is important to use your gifts and knowledge in ways that are not solely self-serving. There’s a balance between

having a practice and giving back to the community and the world. Orthodontics is really one of the professions where it still is really personal and not like ordering prescriptions online or going to a medical office where it’s a different nurse or doctor all the time,” he said. “I’ve value that I get to develop relationships with my patients and their families over time. I’m the only doctor that you or your child will see over the course of orthodontic treatment and that personal relationship is very important to me. That’s what I think sets my practice apart from most clinics, and with that continuity of care and supervision comes predictably excellent and efficient results.” Albert Family Orthodontics’ Trinity location is at Trinity Professional Place, 1806 Short Branch Drive, Suite #102 in Trinity (at the corner of Duck Slough and Trinity Blvds.) The Palm Harbor office is at 2445 Tampa Road, Suite A.
