Florida Cancer Specialists: Local Stories of Hope for the Holidays During the holidays, many people draw family close and consider the things that are most important in life. This season, stories from two Tampa Bay area cancer patients help illustrate how family can inspire us, help us grow and even help us heal. Dave Norris and his wife, Bobbi, were flying more than a thousand miles one way to get treatment for his stomach cancer. During his career, Dave joked that his office was seat 2B on a jet plane. He never minded traveling for business, but when his trips were taking him far from home for cancer treatment, the flights became a nightmare. Dave dreaded always knowing another trip for more treatment was only a couple of weeks away. Dave’s body was already under a
great deal of strain from the cancer treatment and Bobbi could see the added stress that travel was layering on her husband. When Bobbi started looking for cancer treatment options closer to home, she found a Florida Cancer Specialists office only a few miles from their Lakewood Ranch
neighborhood. They started visiting the local cancer center as Dave moved into the knockout round of his treatment. The difference he felt was instant. The staff and Dave’s new physician at Florida Cancer Specialists treated Dave and Bobbi like family, which was a radical departure from what they had
experienced at the cancer center states away. Dave was grateful that Bobbi intervened when she saw an opportunity for him to have better cancer care. When he finished his treatment, Dave experienced an intense desire to make a difference with the next chapter of his life. He knew he wanted to make an impact on the lives of people battling cancer, but it was Bobbi who knew how he could do it. As a caregiver, Bobbi felt powerless in helping Dave heal. The only way she found she could make an impact on Dave’s treatment was to bring him a warm blanket during his See “FCS” on page 36.

K and K Parrot Supplies recently opened a new retail store at 4608 Land O’ Lakes Boulevard. For more than 13 years the online retailer has been providing bird owners and lovers with high quality toys, food, and accessories at competitive prices and now, with their brick and mortar location, they are able to serve their customers and their birds even better and continuing to live up to their slogan to provide feathered friends with everything they need to live happy, healthy lives. If you are a new bird owner, K and K Parrot Supplies owners Kathy and Karen are a wealth of knowledge. They owned a breeding aviary in Delaware for 10 years before entering
the pet supply business but even before that Kathy was in love with birds. “My first pet bird was a cockatiel. After that, the birds I kept as pets got bigger and bigger.” Kathy now owns three parrots and is happy to share her expertise from years as a pet bird owner and breeder. One area where she sees some misconceptions among pet bird owners is when it comes to food. “The quality of bird food has become so much better than it was years ago. Parrots and bigger birds can live up to 80 years but with the high quality food available now, they may have a longer life span. Many people think it is ok to just feed seeds to birds but good quality food is very important or the bird can get sick.” K and K Parrot Supplies carry the full

From The Editor Carla Selby
Trinity Area Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles Holidays are many things to many people. For some, the primary function of a holiday is its religious significance. It is a time when specific spiritual opportunities are available to experience. For others Holidays are opportunities for friends and relatives to get together and celebrate life. Most people get a few days off during the Holidays so there is an opportunity to renew family bonds or spend time with good friends. Relatives that you haven't seen in a while join together with you to celebrate the family that you belong too. Our lives have become so hectic and stressful that we spend way too little time with the people we love. This causes all sorts of health

problems, both emotional and physical. When I was very young I used to hear adults talk about "stress" all the time, and it seemed like a "fake" disease or an excuse for people to get together and complain about work and other responsibilities. Now that I am in my 30s and I am dealing with "adulthood" and all its glory, I can attest that stress is one of the most unpleasant things I have ever dealt with. What it does to our bodies AND our hearts, it's a scary thing. We all need some time to cool off, to step away from our daily worries and to decompress… and the Holidays are the perfect time to do that, and to really worry about what's important in life. I encourage you to remember that this time

should be used in ways that above all, give you peace and happiness. Remember that Christmas is not in the size of the tree in your house, or even the amount of lights decorating your front porch. It is not in the amount of gifts we send or the greeting cards we get. Christmas is in our hearts. Christmas it's in the kindness we show others, and the smiles of our loved ones. Christmas is what we make of it with those who we care about the most, so make it a great one. My best wishes for all of you during this season, and a wonderful new year 2018.

Langer Family Medicine, P.A. Promoting Health and Wellbeing In The Tampa Bay Community By Carla Selby
Regardless of your age, it’s important to your health that you develop a good relationship with a physician. Many times when patients choose a doctor, they may pick an internist because they haven’t had a family physician growing up. A family practitioner is a pediatrician and internist combined into one specialty that cares for both children and adults. At Langer Family Medicine they accept patients ages 5 and up, with an emphasis on women’s health. The specialty of family medicine is centered on lasting, caring relationships with patients and their families. Family physicians are trained to deal with a wide variety of medical issues that might be experienced by the members of a family unit. It is to the extent, which this relationship with the patient (or family) is valued, developed, nurtured and
8
maintained that distinguishes Langer Family Medicine from the rest. Helping the practice maintain these high standards of service is Rhode Island native, Dr. Donna Malone, D.O. who is Board Certified in Family Practice. Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) are fully licensed physicians who practice in every medical specialty. They provide a full range of services, from prescribing drugs to performing surgery, as well as using the latest medical tools. But DOs, like Dr. Malone, offer something truly special—their unique approach to patient care. As part of her medical education, Dr. Malone received additional training in osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment, or “OMT” DOs often use OMT to relieve pain. Research shows that people with low back pain who got OMT

needed fewer painkillers. This technique may also ease migraines. It is an excellent alternative for people who are unable or unwilling to use NSAIDs or other types of pain medication. If you get OMT, you should expect your DO to use their hands to apply light pressure, resistance, and stretching. It should not hurt. The practice consists of several different techniques, including: • Soft tissue: You’ll feel stretching and pressure on your muscles. • Muscle energy: In this technique, you move your muscles in a specific direction while the DO counters that movement. Think push-pull. • Myofascial release: Your DO uses firm but gentle pressure to release tension in the fascia, which is the layer of connective tissue that surrounds your bones, muscles, and organs. • Osteopathic cranial

Prevention Starts With Kids Millions of infants, children and adolescents in the United States do not receive key clinical preventive services according to a report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Clinical preventive services are extremely important to support healthy development. Preventive medical services help detect conditions and diseases in their earlier, more treatable stages

significantly reducing the risk of illness, disability, early death, and expensive medical care. “Preventive medicine needs to begin with our children,” says Dr. Malone. “At Langer Family Medicine, we offer school physicals and regular exams to make sure your little ones are strong and on track for a healthier and longer life.” Dr. Malone graduated in 2011 from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic
Medicine in Ft. Lauderdale and completed her residency in Family Practice at HCA Largo Medical Center. She recently joined Langer Family Medicine in August of 2017. Even though Dr. Malone has only been practicing at Langer Family Medicine for a few short months, she has quickly gained the trust and affection of many patients. Frank Porter from Holiday, Fl says, “There aren't enough good things to say about Dr. Malone. I like people in general but trust very, very few. Dr. Malone was an exception; by the end of my second visit she had my complete trust. I recommended her to several people had also become her patients.” Dr. Malone really takes time to listen to each of her patient’s concerns and answers any of their questions. She is extremely knowledgeable and easy to talk to, and once you meet her, you’ll quickly get the feeling that you’ve known her forever. You will not feel rushed or uncomfortable while Dr. Malone is seeing you, she will make you feel at ease and put all your doubts to rest. All you have to do is follow instructions and focus on getting better. Working at a private practice, allows Dr. Malone to practice medicine in the best way possible; with more passion, compassion and freedom. “The biggest benefit of working at a private practice, besides the time flexibility, is the fact that we don’t work for anyone else, we work for our patients,” says Dr. Malone. “We don’t have a corporate umbrella to answer to, so we can provide a more personalized care to our patients. There are no time restrictions or strict guidelines, so if we want to
take an hour with a patient we do it. It’s all about that personal touch and showing that we truly care about the health of each one of our patients.” Sonia from Dunedin says, “I love Dr. Malone! She is extremely caring, comforting and easy to talk to. She takes the time to listen, understand and answer all my questions. I recommend her to all my family and friends in the area and will continue to do so. I'm so glad I found her!” If you are looking for a remarkable and attentive doctor that you can trust, and if you crave that personalized attention and comfort that comes from talking to a well-known professional at a private practice, then look no further! Dr. Malone is the practitioner for you, your kids, your spouse and even your parents! “There’s nothing more rewarding than to win a patient’s trust and hearing them say they are feeling better and their health is improving,” says Dr. Malone. “Of course it takes time and dedication to earn a patient’s trust, but it’s all worth it at the end. Just knowing you can make a huge difference in someone’s life… there’s nothing better than that. Getting a referral from that happy, satisfied and trusting patient is just an added bonus.” Langer Family Medicine PA is located at 1806 Short Branch Dr #101, Trinity, FL 34655. To make an appointment with Dr. Malone, please do not walk-in, but call (727) 372-0873 in advance to schedule your visit. Dr. Malone’s Office Hours are: Monday - Thursday 9:30am 5:30pm Friday 9:30am 4:30pm.

Carla Bartow, a satisfied customer, shares her experience, “When BJ came out to give us a quote, she looked at the job and I could tell immediately that she knew what she was talking about. We had our family room, kitchen and dining room re-grouted. They also re-grouted the tub, shower and base of our toilet in our bathroom. They were fantastic! Not only were they
professional and reliable but they also completed the job much faster than we had anticipated.” Repeat customer John C. says, “I had Grout Tech come out to my place three years ago. The service was excellent and the price was great too. I recently rehired Grout Tech to come out to complete my other two bathrooms, which they’ll begin working on in June. I chose Grout Tech once again because their professionalism and skill is unbeatable.” Another satisfied client, John F. says, “My wife and I had a bad experience with a grout service company we hired off Craigslist. The work was terrible and they lacked

A Necessary Conversation Takes Unflinching Look at Bullying, Mental Health, Gun Violence and Those Left Behind to Pick Up Pieces A Necessary Conversation, an original theatre production joining two short plays dealing with bullying, mental health, gun violence and its aftermath will be on stage in the Straz Center for the Performing Art's TECO Theatre on Saturday, January 20, 2018. Written by two teachers, Peter Nason and Deborah Bostock-Kelley, A Necessary Conversation features two poignant performances that debuted in 2017 to stellar reviews and positive audience response Nason's 47 Reasons to Live at the Tampa Fringe Festival and BostockKelley's 11:11 at Tampa Bay Theatre Festival. His tells the tale of the inner workings of a potential school shooter and hers explores the survivors left behind. After seeing each other's production, Deborah and Peter realized the messages they were writing about were perfect bookends for one another. The gun violence topic was timely and the plays provided an opportunity to start a conversation educators, parents and
16
teenagers should be having. “When I wrote the play almost 10 years ago, I put it away because something similar to the events in it happened AFTER I was writing it, so it sat in a drawer for years. I tweaked it a few years later, and a student of mine—Caleb Brening—suggested that I send it out,” said Nason. “Little did I know, but the world has gotten crazier, and the events in the play are more pertinent now than they were nearly a decade ago when I wrote it. In some ways, it’s as if I woke up and wrote the play this morning.” Directed by Nick Hoop, 47 Reasons to Live, a dark reflection on a school shooting, will not leave you like some performances do. Caleb Brening’s performance as James will get under your skin and stay there long after the show ends. “My play deals with educators trying to figure out what to do with a very troubled student. It poses some very tough questions because that’s the tough world that we face— as teachers, as parents, and as teens,”
For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • info@NNLFlorida.com
said Nason. “How do we reach that troubled kid? What do we do to help him…but also to help ensure that those kids who could be affected by his actions remain safe?” In Bostock-Kelley's 11:11, the play examines how mothers in a grief support group attempt to put on the façade of a normal life after experiencing a parent's worst nightmare - the traumatic and violent loss of a child. Directed by Bostock-Kelley, 11:11 features the talents of Amy C. Ragg, Monique Brown, David Fraga, and Kym Welch, familiar faces to Tampa Bay community theatre. “This was written in 2016 after I saw another Facebook post about a child who killed himself because of in school and online bullying. His parents never knew, and only discovered the tormenting he went through after his suicide,” said Bostock-Kelley. “11:11 examines the other side. What if the bullied child couldn’t take it anymore, and something inside just breaks? And what happens to the family left
DECEMBER 2017
behind?” In August 2017, Bostock-Kelley submitted an application and applied for a grant and the opportunity to fund their theatre project. In September 2017, she was honored to be one of two recipients awarded Theatre Tampa Bay's Jeff Norton Dream Grant. She reached out to the Straz Center with their concept and the venue graciously helped make their vision a reality. "Now more than ever, we need to have this dialogue," she said. "Before the digital age, you could go home and get away from the bullies. I can’t imagine being a bullied child today in the technology world. There’s no place to escape. Compounding this topic, no matter what your stance is on guns, gun violence is an epidemic. You just need to log on to social media to learn about another in this series of senseless tragedies. When is the next one too many? How many more hashtag-names-strong do we need before someone says no more?" A Necessary Conversation

If you drive as part of your work, your vehicle could be a tax savings for you come April. The 2017 per-mile rate is 53.5 cents for each business mile driven. If you have a small business, work in sales, or occasionally use your personal auto for anything work-related, it could really add up. What you can’t deduct are the miles you drive from home to your primary business location as that is considered commuting and a personal expense. Even if you make business calls or have advertising on your vehicle that mileage is still considered commuting and personal. What does qualify as deductible business mileage? • If you are self-employed and you have a qualified home office (the principal place of business is in your home) your travel to business meetings, client visits and that trip to the office supply store would all qualify as business mileage, even though you are leaving from your home. This mileage is not considered commuting because your home is where you conduct all your business.
20
• If you have a regular W2 job, and you have unreimbursed mileage, or your employer pays you a set allowance each month towards mileage, meals, etc. but does not require you to substantiate those expenses (non-accountable plan), make sure you keep the documentation anyway. Any unsubstantiated allowance paid by your employer will be included in your W2 income so maintaining records for those deductible expenses could be a tax savings for you. • If your vehicle is used 100 percent for business and there is no personal use—you still must keep a mileage log. If you are using your vehicle for both personal and business your deductible expenses are pro-rated based on percentage of use. You have two options for deducting vehicle expenses. You can use your actual expenses (parking fees, tolls, interest on vehicle loan, vehicle registration fees, lease and rental expenses, insurance, fuel and gasoline, repairs including oil changes, tires and other routine maintenance and depre-

ciation) or the standard mileage rate to calculate the deduction. Parking fees and tolls can be deducted in addition to the standard mileage rate if you choose to go with that method but no other actual expenses. You can use whichever deduction method is best for your tax situation. A word of caution… if the IRS audits your return, and you do not have a mileage log and corresponding records, your vehicle deduction could very well be disallowed. If the deduction is disallowed you will be stuck having to pay back the deduction ei-

ther partially or in full plus penalties and interest. If you find yourself in an audit your reported mileage will have to be substantiated. The simplest way to do that is to have your oil changed at the end of each year. The odometer reading is usually printed on the receipt and is acceptable verification for the IRS. File that receipt along with your tax papers and mileage log each year. Before the ball drops to kick off 2018, consider scheduling that oil change and jot down your odometer reading. Next April you will likely be glad you did. Tech Talk with Bob: “When to Buy a New Computer” By Bob Dalles Greetings! I am receiving emails from readers asking if they need to fix their existing computer or scrap it and buy a new one. This is a difficult question to answer without actually inspecting the computer myself. My goal in this column is to give you things to consider before buying a new system. Some people believe that they need to upgrade their existing system or buy a new system every time Apple or Microsoft releases a new operating system (OS). The OS is the basic software on a computer that allows other programs/apps to function. If you use a word processing program to write letters, the word processor (WP) needs an OS to help the WP save files, print files, etc. Think of the OS as the stage (platform) where the other programs/apps perform. I could make much more money if I advised my clients to upgrade their OS every time a new one is released. However, I do not advise my clients to jump into a new computer or upgrade
28
their OS unless they need it. My goal is to advise my clients to do what’s best for their current situation. Yes, I want to make money but I want my clients to know that they will get an honest recommendation from me and only advise them to upgrade if they actually
For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • info@NNLFlorida.com
need a newer OS. After all, wouldn’t you be happier keeping hundreds of dollars in your pocket instead of spending it on something you really don’t need? So, how do you know if you need a newer OS? If your computer is running
DECEMBER 2017
Windows 7 should you upgrade to Windows 10? I always say, “do not upgrade unless you have a program/app or piece of hardware (printer, scanner, etc.) that requires the newer OS.” If your computer functions properly there is no need to upgrade just because a newer OS has been released. One trap users fall into with a newer OS, (by either upgrading their current computer or buying a new system) is that some of their existing hardware or software is not compatible with the newer OS. This is a big issue for those users who are running Windows XP and jump to Windows 10. They sometimes learn that their printer or a program no longer works with the newer OS. Now they have to spend even more money on a new printer and new program. Yikes! Most hardware/software manufacturers design their products to eventually become functionally obsolete. That is why I always advise my clients to schedule a “pre-purchase consultation” with me so we can determine what an upgrade is really going to cost them. It is money well
Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles
spent because if we determine that you need to upgrade, you will be more knowledgeable when you walk into a store or shop online. Every client who has done that is happy because they bought what they needed and was not “upsold” to something they didn’t need. Clients who schedule prepurchase consultations typically find that they usually save more money on their new computer purchase than what they paid for the consultation. I’m not saying that sales people in these stores are looking to take advantage of you, it’s that they don’t know your whole story (since they don’t come to your home or office) to truly determine what best suits you. Some clients have even paid me to accompany them to the store as liaison between them and the sales person. We’ll also browse the internet with you if you prefer to buy online. Some of the emails I receive ask me to recommend a make and model for an upgrade. I will not do that because it is not my intention to endorse or denounce any particular brand publicly in this column. Plus without an onsite pre-purchase consultation it would not be appropriate for me to make a
Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles
recommendation. However, if we do have a pre-purchase consultation we will discuss brands and model numbers that are suitable for your specific needs. Let’s quickly touch on hardware. The main issue with laptop/notebook computers is the battery not holding a charge anymore and/or getting extremely hot when connected to the power supply. In this is case the battery can be removed to lower the heat produced by the laptop. However, this only works if you plan to keep the computer in one place. If you need mobility then replacing the battery is cheaper than buying a new computer. As long as there are no software issues, most hardware issues can be resolved for less money than a new purchase. Have a tech question? Email it to TechTalkTBNL@BobTheComputerGuy.NET. Questions will be selected by the popularity of a topic and answered in this column. If you have a more urgent need or have a unique situation you may schedule an appointment with one of my Professionally Certified Technicians by calling 727-534-4000. Until next time, Happy Holidays!

SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: SAT EXAM CHANGES By Dr. Wayne Adams
When the SAT added a new exam date last August, it caused quite a stir in the testing community because now the SAT had the first exam of the fall, students could prepare outside of the school year, and suddenly the ACT was behind in the “fall testing race”. What many did not realize is that the SAT only shifted their normal SAT exam date in January up to August, and did not replace the January date. So the last SAT Exam of the fall is on December 2nd, and the first SAT Exam of the spring is on March 10th. The last two SAT Exams of the spring are scheduled for April 14th and June 9th. The remaining exam dates for the ACT are December 9th, Feb 10th, April 14th, and June 9th. With the major exception of the University of Florida, with a very “hard” application date in November, most other colleges and universities in Florida will consider applicants on a “rolling admission”

date with more flexibility for when SAT and ACT Exam scores are received. Also, current Bright Futures’ rules allow seniors to take the SAT

“FCS” Continued from page 1 chemotherapy sessions. Oncology offices are cold places. Chemotherapy often involves pumping icy fluid through the body, making the patient cold to the core. Dave also lost a great deal of weight during stomach cancer treatment, so the cold felt especially brutal for him. When Bobbi saw him like that, she would get a warm blanket from a huge blanket oven at the cancer center and wrap Dave up. When Dave said he wanted to make a difference in the lives of other cancer patients, she knew that a warm blanket was a great way to make that happen. The couple adjusted their family’s foundation to focus on buying blanket warmers for the more than 50 Florida Cancer Specialists offices across the state. “You can touch a lot of lives with a warm blanket,” Dave likes to say. Pamela’s love of tennis is actually what led her to discover her cancer diagnosis. She and her husband, Brent, frequently went to their local tennis court for a game of doubles with their friends. When Pamela began to feel severely out of breath during her matches, she knew something was wrong. At first, Pamela thought the shortness of breath was just from some lung congestion. But it continued to get worse until she could only play tennis for a short while before being completely out of breath. When Pamela’s doctors told her that she had a rare form of lung cancer and gene mutation, people encouraged her to go out of state to a world-renowned cancer treatment center far away. But when Pamela thought about spending nights in hotel rooms with her two teenage boys back home, she knew that just wasn’t an

Her desire to stay close to her husband and sons led Pamela to a Florida Cancer Specialists office that offered exactly what she needed. “I can definitively say that it is the actions of my doctor at Florida
