Michael and Michelle bought a home in Westchase knowing that they would be remodeling the bathrooms. Though the home wasn’t old, it had basic contractorgrade plumbing fixtures, lackluster design, and the previous owners faltered on upkeep as well. The master bath had a major leak that even ruined the floors in the master bedroom. Michael searched Angie’s List and called several companies to come out and meet with them, but the stellar reputation of Yeager and Company stood out. In fact, Yeager and Company has earned the Angie’s List Super Service Award for past ten consecutive years, from 2006 to 2016! When they met Yeager and Company’s Vice President Melanie Carter, who heads up the kitchen and bath remodeling division, their decision was made. Michelle shares, “When I met Melanie for the first time, I told my husband, “I want to go with them! Melanie is very warm and friendly and I felt comfortable with her. See “Yeager & Co.” on page 34.

Writing about the people who receive Trinity Family Physicians’ Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award always is inspiring, but this latest recipient truly humbled me and I believe Dr. Amir Shirmohammad (Dr. Shirmo) and Dr. Stephanie Eldridge at Trinity Family Physicians feel the same way. Fourteen-year-old Amanda Moore is an A student at Gulf High School, a volleyball player on her school’s team, a junior league bowler, and a philanthropist with a heart that will bowl you over! Selling candy at the local bowling alley, Amanda has raised more than $10,000 over the past four years, and every cent goes to helping families in need through her partnership with Pasco Kids First. This young lady is so impressive in her quest to help others that we hope reading her story will inspire you to make the effort to help Amanda help Pasco Kids First, and to give – even if it is just a little, because so many people have so little. So how does an ordinary child do something extraordinary? One box of candy at a time, that’s how. Amanda and her mom Amy love to bowl and both are on leagues, so Lane Glo on Old County Road 54 in New Port Richey is kind of a second home for them. Four years ago, young Amanda started selling candy bars for $1 each at Lane Glo to raise money for a tournament. Soon she’d sold enough boxes of candy (at a profit of $12 per box) to cover her costs. Amanda’s mom Amy recalls, “When we showed up See “Amanda” on page 26.

Discover the Wonder of the Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch in Odessa By Julie Kanehl Imagine creating a whole new lifestyle for yourself, one that takes you out of the suburbs and into the world of alpaca ranching. For many people in the United States, Alpaca ranching is becoming a new way of life, because once people spend time with the gentle-natured alpaca, a relative of the llama, they seem to fall in love. That’s exactly what happened to Frank and Brenda Crum, which is why they opened Golden Sprit Alpaca Ranch in Odessa, just over a decade ago. Their 100 percent working ranch is home to more than 200 alpacas, and they find their new lifestyle to be exciting, rewarding, and a lot of fun. Perhaps the best way to find out about alpaca is to come out to the ranch for a visit! There, people have the opportunity to meet these sweet, docile creatures, step into the life of ranching, visit the retail store, adopt, or even purchase an alpaca. At Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch, you too can learn how to own and operate an alpaca ranch. The main ranch is located

at 10937 Tarpon Springs Rd. in Odessa, while tours and the retail shop, EveryWear Alpaca, is located at 9317 Tarpon Springs Rd. Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch is an experience, a lifestyle and an adventure all rolled into one. Alpaca Ranching is an Adventure of a Lifetime! Frank and Brenda Crum hadn’t envisioned themselves becoming alpaca ranchers, but when they found themselves with more than 75 acres of sprawling land in Odessa, they thought it was the perfect opportunity to try something new. Alpacas are playful animals with a great deal of personality, and frankly, people just love being around them. What’s more, they don’t require the level of attention that horses or other animals would require. You don’t need to ride them, milk them or train them. Known for being adorable and cute, alpacas are even becoming popular pets for those who have enough space for them to roam. Brenda says, “We wanted to get involved with an animal that would

offer a sustainable product, while being unique and personable. The alpaca is a very independent animal with varying personality traits. Understanding each animal’s unique personality has helped us build the framework of Golden Spirit. From the very beginning Brenda Crum, owner of Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch of working in the alpaca industry, I try helped us with our ranch so much, embarked on a journey of learning which is why I now spend a lot of time with Frank. We consulted with busisharing what I have learned with other ness leaders and veterinarians, realpaca enthusiasts. We are here to presearched feed and nutrition, and dove in to get our hands dirty. fleece, or fiber, that gets the majority of the attention. In comparison with the lamb, alpaca fiber has a hollow core and a lighter weight. Naturally lanolinfree, the fiber they produce is hypoallergenic, and therefore creates a fabric that is far less “itchy” than other fibers naturally produced by animals. Alpaca fiber is rated on its quality, and the quality depends on the breeding of the animal, which is why alpaca breeding is so important. Brenda says, “We take pride in focusing on the well-being, and the quality of the fleece when it comes to breeding our animals.” Adding, “When it comes to alpaca fiber, there isn’t any mass manufacturing. It’s a cottage industry. It starts with individuals who collect the fleece and process it into yarn. The result is a quality that many people claim is better than cashmere.” What’s clear to any visitor to Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch is the unparalleled dedication to their alpaca. While maintaining this clear focus and dedication to their wellbeing, they have also been able to build a reputation built on breeding some of the highest quality alpacas in the United States. In fact, many of the alpaca bred at Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch earn awards for their quality of fleece.

Tour Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch & Meet the Alpacas Golden Spirit is not normally open to the public, as it is a workingranch, but they offer regular tours of the ranch where their guests receive a guided tour, meet the alpacas, feel their famous fleece, and learn about what it means to adopt or even become an alpaca rancher. One local visitor said, “We had such a great experience on our tour! You can certainly tell the love they have for the alpacas, which are simply adorable! Great experience for kids and adults as well. We learned many new facts!” Offering tours for both small and large groups, guests are given the opportunity to shop at their aptly named, Every Wear Alpaca boutique at the conclusion of the visit. The clothing and the fiber from the alpaca can be used to make such beautiful products, that many people feel that a trip to the Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch isn’t complete without a souvenir. A guest to Golden Spirit said, “The tour we had this morning was absolutely phenomenal. The alpacas were a complete joy to interact with. It was clear that they were happy and
healthy and receiving stellar care. This ranch is a hidden gem.” Adopt an Alpaca! While many people love the experience and the adventure of visiting Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch, many people fall in love with them, just like the Crum family did, and they decide that they want to step into the adventure for themselves. One way to do this is to adopt an alpaca! For many people, this gives them the opportunity to interact with an alpaca without requiring them to own the land or have the expertise required in owning one. It’s a bit like a sponsorship! Brenda says, “By adopting one of our alpacas, people get the opportunity to be a part of the animal’s life, make a difference on the ranch, and are given opportunities to visit the animal right here at Golden Spirit!” Learn The Ropes! Adoption is a wonderful opportunity for many locals who don’t have the means to own their own alpaca, but many people encounter the alpaca and know that their lives will never be the same. They know that they want to become alpaca ranchers themselves.
If that’s the case, Brenda and Frank Crum will do everything they can to help foster an interest in this unique business and lifestyle – from buying your first alpaca to learning how to breed them, and most of all-how to give them a safe and healthy place to thrive. Golden Spirit even offers boarding opportunities for those alpaca owners who don’t have their own land. Educated, dedicated, award winning and accommodating, the owners of Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch want to encourage others to experience the wonder of life on an alpaca ranch. If this lifestyle is of interest, keep an eye on their website and Facebook page, for they offer informational events, hold galas and educational seminars regularly. For more information, please call (813) 382-5733, email info@goldenspiritalpaca.com, visit www.goldenspiritalpaca.com or check out their Facebook page! The Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch is located at 10937 Tarpon Springs Rd., while tours and the EveryWear Alpaca retail shop is located at 9317 Tarpon Springs Rd., Odessa.

Suncoast Women’s Care Celebrates its 15-Year Anniversary By Kim Thomas It was fifteen years ago this April, that Dr. Wanda Torres opened the doors to her practice Suncoast Women’s Care. Dr. Torres laughs and even tears up a little recalling those early years. Like anyone who has built a business from the ground up, Dr. Torres had to make personal sacrifices and work insane hours to make her vision a reality. “I started from zero. I had this idea for Gentle OB/GYN Care for Women by Women. But I opened the doors and there were no patients at first.” Dr. Torres would keep her doors open during office hours, then she would head to the hospital to meet other doctors. She volunteered. She put herself out there in the medical community so that the primary care physicians in the area could get to know her and the referrals started coming in. Suncoast Women’s Care has seen tremendous growth, and though there are two men working in the office (one is Dr. Torres’ husband Javier), Dr. Torres has stayed true to her mis-

sion to have an all-female medical staff so that her patients know their care providers understand what it’s like to be a female patient. Suncoast Women’s Care is no longer located in a tiny office; now Dr. Torres has a spacious office on the second floor of the BayCare Medical Arts Building on Trinity Oaks Boulevard in Trinity, and now there are two OB/GYN doctors. Suncoast Women’s Care welcomed Malieri Colon-Rivera, MD in 2015, and they also have two nurse practitioner midwives. Nowadays, Dr. Torres can’t go out for a local shopping trip without running into mothers and the many babies that she helped bring into this bright world. She and her husband Javier have a sweet and joyous relationship and it was enjoyable to see their way with each other. “Oh yes, remember the other day at the restaurant when two mamas came up to us with their strollers,” she says and Javier laughs, saying, “and forget about it if she says she is going to the store for half an hour, she is gone for hours…” with Dr. Torres returning

his laugh and the banter, “but I can’t help it – I always see so many mamas who want me to see their babies and how they are growing!” She loves it! “We are members of a local congregation and have been able to go to baptisms, communions and even the confirmations of some of the babies I delivered. It’s exciting to see how they’ve grown.” It is clear that Dr. Wanda Torres is doing what she was meant to do. Her office walls are filled with photos of mothers and their babies, even her logo represents what she loves and features a mother’s face looking down at her newborn. Suncoast Women’s Care offers the full scope of OB/GYN medical care, including laparoscopic and robotic assisted surgeries. “I was the first doctor in the area to perform single site robotic assisted hysterectomies,” says Dr. Torres, who does these types of surgeries at Mease Countryside Hospital. Suncoast Women’s Care also offers in-office ultrasound, and can perform many procedures in-office such as leep cone biopsy, endometrial

Wiseman Tax & Bookkeeping Does it All: Accounting, Payroll, Tax Preparation and Tax Resolution! By Brie Thompson With all of the media coverage regarding stolen identities, illegally appropriated income taxes, and the public’s general growing distrust of the Internet, it is important to forge a relationship with someone whose integrity and knowledge will work for you and in your best interest. Karen Wiseman, EA, owner of Wiseman, Tax & Bookkeeping, understands the current climate in the world of taxes. She works closely with clients to decipher the best needs for their business or family. Wiseman Tax & Bookkeeping has been serving both residents and businesses in the local community for nine years. In 2015, she moved the practice into an office on Mitchell Boulevard in Trinity. The practice assists clients in all areas of tax preparation (individual, estate, partnership,

corporate) as well as providing accounting and payroll services for small to medium sized businesses. As a QuickBooks Pro-Advisor, Wiseman offers a wide range of small business bookkeeping options including setup and monitoring, remote access bookkeeping, or complete recordkeeping on her system. The most important thing a business can do is maintain an accurate recordkeeping system. “It is important to me that we go through all the bookkeeping and tax documents together, and that my clients understand what is reflected on their statements and included on their return and financial statements. The taxpayer bears the ultimate responsibility for what is reported and they need to know where those numbers are coming from,” explains Wiseman. Karen is also dedicated to increasing public awareness of the Enrolled Agent designation. She is the

president of the FSEA Suncoast Chapter of Enrolled Agents and on the Board of Directors for the Florida Society of Enrolled Agents. Enrolled Agents carry the highest credential the IRS awards. Individuals who obtain this elite status must adhere to ethical standards and complete annual tax based continuing education. Having a deep understanding of the current tax laws allows her to work with small business clients to make decisions more effectively. Wiseman recommends calling and setting up an appointment to review your specific situation and gain an understanding for what direction is needed to minimize the tax liability of your small business or individual tax. Knowledge is power, therefore it is better to make vague ideas more clear and to have that close working relationship with your tax preparer. Karen makes sure her clients are on

Less IRS Stress! Generally, the very initials IRS on an envelope cause most people to break out in a sweat. Wiseman Tax & Bookkeeping understands this. Wiseman says most people don’t fall out of compliance on purpose. It is usually the result of a large tax liability they couldn’t pay. More often than not, they don’t file the following year because of the outstanding liability and the cycle begins. As a federally licensed Enrolled Agent, Wiseman is able to negotiate on your behalf with the Internal Revenue Service. When the IRS sends a notice regarding a personal or busi-
ness tax issue, Karen’s expertise as an Enrolled Agent helps to take the burden off of her clients. “I provide representation to taxpayers – both businesses and individuals alike – who find themselves facing the IRS with both simple and complex tax matters, as well as those with previously unfiled tax returns.” Wiseman has worked with many clients to get them back into compliance. If you currently find yourself in a situation like this, Karen will work with you to determine the best resolution options. The IRS is a powerful entity and has the authority to levy and file liens on delinquent accounts, so don’t hesitate to contact her and
develop a pathway to get back into compliance. “Amanda” Continued from page 3 without a box of candy, people wanted to know where the candy was. I said, you mean if we show up here with more candy, you’re going to keep buying it?” Enough people said yes and the Lane Glo managers liked that it was for a good cause, so Amy decided to let Amanda keep selling candy, but with their needs met, this single mom took the opportunity to help her daughter grow in ways that a ruler can’t measure. Amy shares, “I said why don’t you use the money you make to help people? I let her know how many families we could help.” Amanda was thrilled, so Amy started searching and was referred to Becky Bennett, MHA at Pasco Kids First Children’s Advocacy Center. This is a great fit because Becky Bennett has dedicated her career and life to helping families and children in Pasco County. It was Becky who sent a press release about Amanda’s fundraising to Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles, and knowing of the Trinity Family Physicians’ Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award, I nominated Amanda. Since then I’ve

been in contact with Becky, who says of Amanda, “She is amazing! And there is so much more... just wait until you hear all of the things she does in the community not only just for us. And she is an A student and champion bowler!” “Put Your Heart Into It” Just by selling candy at the bowling alley, Amanda began sponsoring families through Pasco Kids First in 2013 and has raised more than $10,000 to help families in need. Amanda has donated coats to patients at Good Samaritan Clinic and continues to volunteer weekly at James Malowe Elementary School. She has donated to Pasco Kids First’s Lunch with Santa. Once again, this past Christmas she was able to brings gifts to three families in Pasco Kids First Healthy Families Program. One story after another, Amanda and her mom Amy, help to bring joy to people, and not just children. Amy shares, “Amanda says, ‘Everyone deserves a Christmas,’ so we help the whole family.” Looking through a stack of photos at the many gifts through the years shows a multitude of toys, as well as tool sets, small appliances, household

Amy recalls, “The first young mother they asked us to help only asked for a mop and a broom –just basic necessities - and then we found out that she didn’t have a bed and the baby didn’t have a crib. We started telling people and were able to get them a bed and crib, too.” “A lot of kids my age don’t know what other people go through,” says

help, “What can we do to help you? What do you want, Amanda?” Her candid reply, “I don’t want people to just give me money, I want people to put their heart into it.” Donations Accepted at Trinity Family Physicians Dr. Shirmo and Dr. Eldridge are putting their hearts into it and Trinity Family Physicians’ office, located at 1817 Cypress Drive, Suite 101 in Trinity, is now a drop-off location for donations to Pasco Kids First and Amanda’s philanthropic candy sales. If you’d like to donate money for candy, please put it in a sealed envelope and leave at front desk. Also accepted are checks made out to Pasco Kids First (a non-profit so donations are tax deductible), which can be left with the front desk at Trinity Family Physicians. We contacted Becky Bennett at Pasco Kids First to get a list of needed items and compiled a list of items that can be left in the donation box at Trinity Family Physicians’ lobby. The following list of needed items were given to us by Becky Bennett at Pasco Kids First. NEEDED ITEMS Diapers, Children’s Under-

wear and Baby Supplies: In cases of sexual abuse, sometimes the children’s undergarments need to be taken for evidence or destroyed. Bus Passes: Used for families and teens to come to the Children’s Advocacy Center for trauma therapy appointments. Gift Cards and Journals for teens receiving counseling: Many times teens are overlooked when it comes to their personal needs and during the holidays. Child Safety Items (outlet plugs, cabinet locks, smoke detectors, etc.): Becky says, “We are actually actively looking for a donation (or funding to purchase) at least 50 door alarms for a campaign we are going to do with the Sheriff’s Office in April due to several child drowning deaths last year. Two mothers were arrested after their children died in ponds.” Checks: “Checks are always appreciated to assist us in purchasing the above when there is a need and to provide the needed therapy services to children who are not reimbursed by our state funders.” Donations also can be made online at www.PascoKidsFirst.org.

Put on Your Walking Shoes: Hiking Spree 2017 By Marcy Sanford This past November Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation kicked off Hiking Spree 2017, a new program to encourage residents to get out and take a hike in one of the beautiful parks we are blessed with in the area. “The program has been a huge success,” said Parks and Recreation Senior Event Coordinator Dana McDonald. “This is the first time we’ve done something like this in Hillsborough County and we’ve had a lot of great response from the community. Hiking Spree was suggested to us by an employee who used to live in Ohio where they had a similar program. We are really excited about the program as a way to get people outside exploring.” Hillsborough County has more than 100 recreational parks and hundreds of miles of hiking trails. Hiking Spree 2017 celebrates those trails. Through March 31, people who register with the program and hike any 8 of 19 designated trails will receive a medallion to put on their hiking stick

or an Access Hiker patch. New Tampa resident Claire Brantley earned her medallion in December and gained a new found love for hiking. “In July I had some bad health test results and I needed to lose weight. I had been successful with the Weight Watchers program in the past but have never combined exercise with the program because I’ve never enjoyed exercise. I am klutzy, have never found sport I enjoyed playing, and would rather be reading than working out.” Claire lost 30 pounds but knew that without exercise, the pounds

would come back. Fortunately a friend took her on a hike and she enjoyed it. “I had fun and when I got home I googled hiking in Hillsborough and found the information about Hiking Spree.” The week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve Claire and two of her friends did at least one, sometimes two, hikes from the Hiking Spree list and earned their medallions. You can find a list of all the hikes and information to help you find the right trail for your skill level on the Hiking Spree website. They are rated

for difficulty from all-purpose to primitive and easy to strenuous. “The hikes on our list are just a sample of the trails we have in Hillsborough County,” said Dana. “We tried to pick ones from different sides of the County and these were specifically chosen because they are great hiking trails.” Some of the trails close to Lutz, Odessa, and Land ‘O Lakes include Lutz Lake Fern Trailhead, Lake Rogers, Violet Cury, and Cypress Creek. Claire highly recommends Vio-

let Cury, “it is really lovely and beautiful,” as well as Lake Rogers, which she says, is, “very unspoiled.” However her favorite has been Morris Bridge, “the Bald Cypress Trail is on the other side of Morris Bridge Road. The hike is beautiful, exquisite. You hike a mile into the woods and come to a gazebo overlooking the Hillsborough River. I have lived here for 18 years and never knew it existed and now it is my favorite place to go hike.” There are plenty of hiking selections throughout Hillsborough County and those looking for a day adventure may want to explore other areas of the County like the Golden Aster Scrub Preserve in Gibsonton which is home to endangered plants and birds like the Florida golden aster and the Florida scrub jay. Dana says that more than 800 people have signed up with the program since it started and that the County will definitely do it again. “We’ve had about 250 people join us for guided hikes. In February we did a moonlight hike at Blackwater Creek. Lots of people did not realize these parks were there in their backyards. Next time we will highlight different parks and trails.”
Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles
Many County parks, like Lettuce Lake Park, hold program every weekend throughout the year with experts who can tell participants about the animals or plants they’ll encounter in the park or along the trails. It’s not too late to earn your Hiking Spree medallion. For more information about Hiking Spree and to register, visit Hillsborough County’s website at www.hillsboroughcounty.org. Maybe, like Claire – “It’s the first exercise in my life that I’ve really enjoyed.” – you’ll find a new hobby you love.

“Yeager & Co.” Continued from page 1 My husband is savvy with design and she listened to us and really complemented the ideas we’d already thought of.” Michael and Michelle hired Yeager and Company to remodel all three bathrooms in their home, and to replace the wood flooring in the master bedroom. The water damage in the master bath was severe, requiring it to be gutted down to the wall studs, but Michelle and Michael could not be happier with the complete redesign of the space. “Yeager and Company was more expensive than some of the other companies, but for us it came down to quality of work and knowing that the owner is going to be on the job,” says Michelle, adding that owner Jim Yeager regularly stopped by to check on the progress of his crew. “The whole team was excellent! I just love them! They are just good people. We never worried about people in our house because we knew we were getting the best-of-the-best! They made the whole process easy and it was a very positive experience. The crew even

By Daryl Rosenthal Social Security Public Affairs Specialist in Tampa FL At first, seeing taxes taken out of your paycheck can be a little disappointing. However, you can take pride in knowing you’re making an important impact each week when you contribute to Social Security. Understanding how important your contribution is takes some of the sting away because your taxes are helping millions of Americans — and protecting you and your family for life — as well as wounded warriors, the chronically ill, and disabled. By law, employers must withhold Social Security taxes from a worker’s paycheck. While usually referred to as “Social Security taxes” on an employee’s pay statement, sometimes the deduction is labeled as “FICA” which stands for Federal Insurance Contributions Act, a reference to the original Social Security Act. In some cases, you will see “OASDI” which stands for Old Age Survivors Disability Insurance.

The taxes you pay now translate to a lifetime of protection — for retirement in old age or in the event of disability. And when you die, your family (or future family) may be able to receive survivors benefits based on your work as well. Because you may be a long way from retirement, you might have a tough time seeing the value of benefit payments that could be many decades in the future. But keep in mind that the Social Security taxes you’re paying

reaching retirement. Be warned: if an employer offers to pay you “under the table,” you should refuse. It’s against the law. They may try to sell it as a benefit to you since you get a few extra dollars in your pay. But you’re really only allowing the employer to cheat you out of your Social Security credits. If you’d like to learn a little more about Social Security and exactly what you’re building up for yourself by paying Social Security taxes, take a look at

our online booklet, How You Earn Credits, at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10072. html. If you have a friend who lost a parent when they were a child, they probably got Social Security survivors benefits. Social Security helps by providing income for the families of workers who die. In fact, 98 of every 100 children could get benefits if a working parent dies. And Social Security pays more benefits to children than any other federal program.
