Allpro Tree & Landscaping Offers Peace of Mind During Hurricane Season and Beyond

From the Editor.........................5 Tech Talk....................................8

By Deborah Bostock-Kelley As a Florida resident, you are already aware that hurricane season begins on June 1 and doesn’t officially end until November 30. If you’ve lived here long enough, you know to secure patio furniture, move garbage and recycling bins against the house, and put away items that could become lethal projectiles when airborne. But what about the overgrown huge unpruned oak tree that shades your front yard? You’ve been meaning to call someone to trim the tree but just haven’t gotten around to it. Without proper attention, your beautiful tree becomes a

Affordable Summertime Happiness As a diehard bolts fan, I want to take this opportunity to say congratulations to the Tampa Bay Lightning for advancing onto the next round of the playoff series. It is looking like a three-peat, and I couldn’t be more proud of this incredible team. Summer is almost here, and so is the 90+ degree weather! Tech Talk with Bob: STOP: Before Repairing Your PC

Imagine this. The computer you bought from that big box store seven months ago no longer works. No problem, it’s under warranty. You call the manufacturer for a return authorization. You pack and ship your computer to them. Two months later, you finally get it back. It quickly boots up. However, your desktop doesn’t look the same. Then, you realize some programs are missing, you can’t print, and most importantly, all your pictures, videos, music, and other data is nowhere to be found. Your computer works, but your personal stuff is gone. You call the manufacturer to ask about your data. Suddenly, you get this sinking-feeling as you learn that the only obligation they have is to repair or replace your computer to the way it was the first time you took it out of the box. The manufacturer has no liability when it comes to the stuff you add. You learn the hard way that your missing programs, data, and more are your problem. People find themselves unprepared and in this predicament every day. Hopefully, after reading this, you won’t. Some people view computers no differently than coffee makers or other appliances. Electric coffee

8 JUNE 2022

makers use hardware and software to function. However, your coffee maker’s software is not as sophisticated as your computer’s software. Like the coffee maker, people typically do not differentiate between the hardware and software aspects of a computer system. The truth is, where the software in your coffee maker never changes, the software in your computer constantly changes. Especially as you add and delete music, pictures, and other personal data. Your computer’s hard disk drive (HDD) stores all computer software information including your personal and unique information. This happens over time as you add, delete, and otherwise change programs, printers, data, etc. Each change alters the contents of your HDD. When you send your computer to the manufacturer for repair, your HDD may be physically replaced with a new HDD. It can also be logically replaced by having all the information on the HDD erased and then rewritten with the original information the HDD had on it the day you took it out of the box. Ever had the battery in your car replaced? The first thing you realize is the radio preset stations have been wiped out due to the battery being disconnected. The auto repair shop’s responsibility is not to restore your radio presets but to replace your car’s battery with a working one. You’ll just have to reprogram those stations all over again. The same is true of your computer. Important information can be lost during the repair. Personal data, like rare photos, may be impossible to replace. It is always your responsibility to make sure you have what you need to restore the programs and data you have added to your computer since you bought it. But no one ever tells you this until it’s too late! So, how do you minimize your data

loss when you need your computer system repaired? First, make certain all your personal data is backed up. This can be difficult if your computer will not turn on. If your computer will not turn on, there’s a good chance my team can save your HDD data before you send your computer off for repair. Call me at 727-534-4000 to find out. Next, you’ll need the installation disks and/or downloaded files for any software you added to the computer after you bought it. Make sure you have all your product keys so these items can be reinstalled with as little trouble as possible. You’ll also need a list of your email and website usernames and passwords. You will need to reenter these the first time you try to access any secured websites. If you are not sure you have everything you need, and you would like some help sorting it all out, call me. I’ll help you get all your ducks in a row. An hour or two of prevention will save you so much money and, more importantly, grief if you find yourself in a time-crunch to get your computer back up and running the way you had it before sending it off for repair, or experiencing the distress of a malware attack, or the misery from the inevitable HDD crash. Are you certain your computer is safe? You don’t have to do this alone my friend. My team and I are here to keep your computer safer and keep it running. My team repairs computers and secures them, on our bench, onsite in your home or office, and even remotely. We have the best solutions already in place and we’re only a phone call away. Call us anytime at 727-534-4000. We’ve been helping folks restore their peace of mind, and sanity, with their technology for decades. We Keep You Safer In Your Digital World!

SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: SUMMER PREP CLASSES By Dr. Wayne Adams Wow? Summer break has already started. Before we know it, high schools will be back in session in early August. How time flies, especially over the summer. Upcoming Exams: ACT on Saturday July 16th and Saturday, September 10th; SAT on September 3rd and October 2nd; and PSAT on Wednesday October 15th. More and more students prefer to prepare over the summer. Rising seniors want to see if their scores are high enough for desired colleges and universities (and for Bright Futures), rising juniors want to see how they would score plus preparing for the PSAT in mid-October, and many rising sophomores incorporate preparing for these exams as part of their longer term strategy to be admitted to the best university possible and seek to maximize scholarships. Often when I talk with parents, they ask … Question: “How do you keep my student’s attention for your normal three hour class?” Answer: “That is not the problem. As your student will tell you, the problem is that the time goes by so fast.” Question: “How do you motivate students to do their best?” Answer: “When my students quickly see they can rapidly improve, they motivate themselves to see just how well they can do.” Question: “Do you help students aim for a specific score or score range?”

10 JUNE 2022

Answer: “No, because I believe this adds too much pressure and is counterproductive. Instead, I ask them to do their best with the time and priorities they have … and the score will take care of itself. They also learn how to ‘have fun taking the test’, which sounds like words that should never come together but … as they will learn … really do and can greatly help with their mental outlook and test performance.” Question: “What makes the difference in how different students score?” Answer: “For my students, the factors are the academic preparation when they come to me, test-taking skills, special techniques that greatly help on the exam, how well they are guessing on testday, and ‘curve balls’ (those questions you seldom see but, when you do, you either know how to answer them or you are guessing). We have special preparations for these ‘curve balls’.” Question: “Can you help with other areas of college admissions and costs?” Answer: “Yes, and I have for years. This includes writing outstanding college application essays; key information for the ‘Top 25’ colleges and universities, ‘Five More’, and ‘Top 5’ in Florida; locations of very helpful web sites; and my guide Negotiating with Colleges that has helped my families save $1,000 to $10,000 a year in college costs.” Question: “Do you have anything that can help

my student get off to the best start as a freshman in college?” Answer: “Yes, I have written a book about How To Can Survive and Thrive as a Freshman at a Secular University which I give to every family that has proven very helpful in parents and students preparing for the ‘college experience’ and then the student getting off to the best start. If you would like to talk more with me about your student, please give me a call at 727-253-0639 or send an e mail at wwa0811@mykolab. com. Would be great to talk with you further. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve around 200 points on the revised Writing, Reading, and Math SAT superscore; and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to 5 of the “Top 5”, 8 of the “Top 10” and 18 of the “Top 25” universities in the country, and many more schools in Florida. These

schools include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Naval - Air Force - Merchant Marine Service Academies, Penn State, LSU, Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Palm Beach Atlantic, FIU, New College of Florida, Stetson, and Julliard – Manhattan - New England - and Berkley Conservatories of Music. Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. He has also tutored three students who achieved National Merit Scholar Finalist awards. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

Local Musician Releases Debut Album “Get With It” in June By Deborah Bostock-Kelley One of musician Kyle Schroeder’s fondest memories of his dad, Shawn, were the car rides. The car was filled with sounds from 94.1 WSJT, and the toddler was first introduced to his now first love, jazz. Kyle saw national jazz musician Eric Darius at the Black Heritage Festival at 16 years old and knew at that moment that playing jazz was what he wanted to do with his life. “2014 was a big turning point in my life. Eric was such a high-energy performer, and with the amount of air he put into the horn – his sound really resonated with me. It was cool when he came out into the crowd. It was super powerful and I knew that I wanted to be able to do that too.” Kyle gravitated to the saxophone and was part of the jazz band at Mitchell High School, the Ruth Eckerd Hall/ Clearwater Jazz Holiday Big Band, and in his senior year, he was selected for the exclusive honor band, Jazz Band of America. Only a handful of musicians across the country are chosen to participate. While still in high school, Kyle began composing original jazz music with the long-term goal of releasing a jazz album. Kyle studied jazz saxophone and music business and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music; he was still composing. Fast forward eight years from when

14 JUNE 2022

he first wrote his first note to today, and Kyle is making his dream a reality with the release of “Get With It,” his debut contemporary jazz album. Dedicated to his father, whom he lost to cancer in 2019, “Get With It” features nine original compositions and a cover of an Islay Brother’s classic. “Throughout the years, I wrote these songs and redeveloped them multiple times. Over the years, I developed my musicianship, songwriting, arranging, and production skills on the computer. It turned into something that I’m proud of and something that I’m really excited to share with everybody.”

Kyle said that the album title was an invitation. “Come join me on my journey. We’re just starting. Because it’s my first project, I want to invite people everywhere to join in on my future musical endeavors. That’s the inspiration behind the title.” Kyle offered advice to anyone at the beginning of their musical journey. “If you love what you do and you want to make it happen, anything is possible. Stay consistent, stay inspired, and look for inspiration from either other musical artists or really, anyplace you can find inspiration.” Kyle credits his mom Carrie, his dad, and his high school and college

mentors, Joel Quina, the late Tom Domato, Gary Keller, and Allon Sams, for helping him find his path. “Always go with your gut feeling. If your gut feeling says, this is good… stick with it; even if it’s not, quote- unquote, perfect. If it makes you feel a certain way, and think it sounds really good, stick with it.” On June 10th, “Get With It” will be available on Apple Music, iTunes,

Spotify, YouTube Music, and other streaming platforms and download sites. If listeners want to get their hands on an actual physical CD copy, it is exclusively available on Kyle’s website at kyleschroedermusic.com. “We’re doing a big album release party with my band at the Capitol Theatre in Clearwater on the night of the release, Friday night, June 10th and that’s where I’ll be performing live with my group and playing all my original stuff.” Kyle said his favorite selection from the album was difficult to pick because each song makes him feel a different way. “I like power ballads and slower songs, so if I had to pick, my favorites would be “You Complete Me” and “The One.”

When asked what his dad would be thinking of his transition from a toddler first engaged with jazz music through the car radio to a twenty-fouryear-old jazz musician with an album released, Kyle responded, “I definitely think he would be proud of me.” Kyle paused to reflect. “He’d say, ‘keep it going and always do your best.’ Another thing that he used to say is ‘if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.’ I love what I do. If I can share the songs I write that are close to my heart with others, I believe I’m following his advice.” Learn more about Kyle, hire his band, or buy his album by visiting www.kyleschroedermusic.com. JUNE 2022 17

All Pro- story continued from page 1 ticking time bomb. Are you aware that heavy rain and one strong gust of wind can potentially topple a diseased tree onto your roof or worse, a neighbor’s and cause hundreds, even thousands of dollars of damage? It doesn’t have to end that way. The time to prepare is now. When you take the steps you need to make your home secure, don’t forget this one crucial element that is often overlooked and can cause damage to your home. The solution is not always the removal of trees but taking proper preventative care of them. In Pinellas, Pasco, and Hillsborough counties, certified local arborist and Allpro Tree & Landscaping owner Pete Spiridis and his professional team of experts know how to care for your tree before it becomes a severe and dangerous issue. Pruning a tree is done for aesthetic reasons, but it also benefits the tree’s health. Removing damaged, diseased or broken limbs can prevent decay that can compromise structural integrity. Allpro Tree & Landscaping is prepared to help you during the 2022 Hurricane Season. The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane wind scale explains the

18 JUNE 2022

potential damage to your trees from a hurricane, particularly improperly pruned trees. Using a rating system of 1 – 5, it warns that, at 74 to 95 mph, even a category one hurricane can cause damage. Large branches of trees can snap, and shallowly rooted trees may be toppled, possibly causing extensive damage to power lines, creating outages that can last several days. Downed trees can block roads, delaying the response time for emergency crews. “Trees in urban areas of Tampa Bay endure especially brutal stimuli. Some trees do not have the genetic predisposition to deal with these forces. Most trees that fail during the hurricane seasons are improperly pruned trees,” said Pete. At Allpro Tree & Landscaping, the arborists’ custom-tailor solutions promote the health of your unique trees and landscapes. Pete and his professional team of experts will gladly and affordably manage your tree or landscaping problem. If you loathe yard work but love a beautifully landscaped lawn, Allpro offers comprehensive yard clean-up using specialized tools and equipment. The company provides debris elimination, leaves, weeds, grass clippings removal, mulching, composting, and refuse and waste disposal.

Pete and the Allpro Tree & Landscaping experts design beautiful landscaping, trim all types of trees, grind and remove tree stumps, install and remove sod, place rock beds, lay mulch, and perform many other landscaping services for residential and business properties. Allpro Tree & Landscaping staff are highly creative designers who enjoy working with clients to create gorgeous landscape plans. “Our goal is to build an aesthetically pleasing landscape that requires minimal maintenance and satisfies you in every possible way,” said Pete. “Allpro Tree & Landscaping

has landscape design & installation down to a science. The result is always a stunning landscape that holds its beauty across posterity.” If you are wondering if Allpro Tree & Landscaping lives up to its reputation of providing “the elite service that you deserve,” as its website promises, 51 positive Google reviews attest to the company’s professionalism. “….We are so glad we called Allpro Tree & Landscaping because they really do live up to their name. Great job, guys. We would definitely recommend them to our neighbors and friends.” “They were very professional and polite.

They worked well with each and made sure not to damage anything. They also went out of their way to make sure I was happy with their job. I would highly recommend them.” “QUALITY, Professional, Efficient, AND COMPLETELY SUPERB!” National online home service guru Angi (formerly Angie’s List) was impressed enough to present Allpro Tree & Landscaping with its “Super Service Award.” The Better Business Bureau, which analyzes and rates companies according to both the quality of the service they provide and the complaints received about them, awarded Allpro Tree & Landscaping its highest A+ rating.

“Smiles of Trinity” story continued from page 1 twice or more times a week - and almost fourteen years and a global pandemic later, there are more regulars than ever! Despite COVID, the spike in gas prices and groceries, and the unprecedented times we’ve been experiencing since 2020, Central Park Family Restaurant has remained serving the Tampa Bay community by offering great-tasting, freshly prepared food at affordable prices. But it is without a doubt the personal touch of the owners and staff truly keeps people coming back. “Absolutely awesome! I’ve taken my family here several times for nice family breakfasts on the weekend. The food is top-notch, we always receive good service, and the prices are very fair! Usually, I have to look twice at the bill because I think they forgot to add something, nope, all there, just affordable!” says local food guide Curtis Y. on his recent five-star Google review on Central Park. “It’s a nice clean familyowned restaurant with an atmosphere that feels like home. Highly recommend it to families looking for a nice place to eat. With excellent food and prices this good, tip your waitresses well!” With over 2,000 five-star online reviews, you have to come to try for yourself what thousands of people are raving about. “Staff was friendly and helpful, paired nicely with

quick food service. Our meals were delicious and just as we ordered,” says Janet P. in her recent fivestar Google review. “The apple pie was to die for, and their key lime was smooth and delicious, not too sour and far from artificial tasting. This was our first time since moving here, and it will not be the last.” Central Park’s regulars love the food as much as they love the owners and the caring staff. You’ll often find members of the Ferro family checking on tables and saying hello to local diners, always ensuring everyone has a beautiful experience. Even the cooks, servers, and other staff can be considered “regulars” as they have been Central Park family for many years. They even know many customers by name and their favorite “go-to” orders. The menu is as varied as it is large and includes entrees from many different types of cuisine, including American, Italian, Greek, French, Spanish, and more! Altogether, Central Park’s menu gives customers ten full pages of delicious options, including all-day breakfast items, freshly prepared entrees, specialty salads, skyscraper sandwiches, half-pound black Angus beef burgers, hot open-faced sandwiches, and so much more. Those on a specific lifestyle diet or with food restrictions can also enjoy a wonderfully healthy meal at Central Park; they offer several low-

Pushing herself to the limit

Kieleigh Hamor (’22), a pole vaulter for J.W. Mitchell High School, earns the Gregg Schindler Female Student Athlete for June. By Hanna CarberrySimmering During middle school, Kieleigh Hamor (’22) started track as a way to be involved in a sport. Now as a senior in high school, she has earned the conference championships title. Hamor has been inspired by her former NJROTC officers throughout high school and is going to University of Florida on a Navy ROTC scholarship for linguistics in Spanish. Her best meet this season has been against Sunlake where she beat her personal record. Hamor worked hard to improve and make her last year of high school track the best. “My technique is so much better. My height is obviously showing that it went up drastically from previous years. Very specific parts of my technique that I was never able to fix in the previous two years, I fixed this year,” Hamor said. Hamor has been working on being more comfortable with her running approach and making sure she’s using the right equipment when she jumps. Mr. Alan Parmenter (FAC), the track and field coach for Mitchell,

Her level of care for her own athletic development and helping to develop other athletes who look up to her has been exceptional,” Coach Parmenter said. Hamor took a break from track after two years in middle school, then went back for another three years. She makes sure to prepare for her meets by knowing how far back she needs to start her run, how many steps she’s going to

take for her run, and making sure she has all the poles ready for the whole team. “I make sure I have all my little things, like I wear an armband, so I just have to pack everything. I also switch our practice bar with the actual meet bar so I can get over something called ‘bar shy.’ I just kind of make

it more real for myself,” Hamor said. Hamor had a goal for the year to reach 10 feet. She worked to improve her jump and reached 9’8”. Congratulations, Kieleigh Hamor for being selected for Gregg Schindler Female Athlete of June.

Throwing his way to states

Boys track and field competitor, Adam Buonanno (22) from Mitchell High, represents excellence. By Mattox Sartori Adam Buonanno (22) showed off his skills this season for the high school throws team, and as a result, he has been named the Gregg Schindler Male Student Athlete at J.W. Mitchell High School for June. Throughout his four years of playing on the high school throws team, Buonanno participated in shot-put and other field events. Coach Alan Parmenter has been there to see profound changes in his skills and overall play from Buonanno’s freshman to senior year. “Adam has been a major contributor to our throws team for four years. He has developed in his craft and recently was voted as field athlete of the year after winning conference, district, and regional shot-put competitions. He is competing at the 4A state championship for shot-put,” Parmenter said. With Buonanno’s

On the beat!

The Hoofbeat newspaper students learn interview skills, report the news and write feature stories for J.W. Mitchell High School By Susan McNulty In August 2018, Gregg Schindler reached out to me, the adviser of The Hoofbeat newspaper at J.W. Mitchell High School, with a proposition. He wanted to recognize athletes each month in this publication, Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles, Trinity Edition. The concept was simple, although the execution took a collaborative effort. Mr. Schindler would secure space in the magazine, and our athletic director and coaches would select athletes to be recognized. The next step in the process was for The Hoofbeat students to interview the athletes and coaches, then take photographs and write a feature story, headline, secondary headline and caption. The copy then made its way through the editors and myself for revisions, and finally each month, I sent the final versions to TBNL by their publication deadline. This year, the

recognition expanded to include band members, NJROTC members, club leaders and this month Mr. Schindler chose to recognize the writers themselves. Since 2018, The Hoofbeat writers have completed 65 feature stories for Gregg Schindler and Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles. Emma Diehl, a member of the Class of 2022, began writing feature stories her sophomore year. She earned a spot as co-Editor in Chief for her senior year, and wrote many features for Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles. Emma and her co-Editor in Chief and News editor of The Hoofbeat, Ashley Hoskins, taught newer staff members how to conduct interviews and write stories. “I have learned how to become a better writer and cover newsworthy stories throughout our school. Leading students has been a privilege, as I can help them excel in journalism,” Hoskins said. The Business

Manager, senior Alexa Grubbs, kept track of all finances and reached out to organizations for donations and support. The Hoofbeat expanded their scope of coverage this year to include podcasting and a website, thanks to a grant from the Pasco Education Foundation. Grubbs wrote stories for the website and the print issues of the paper. “When writing a story, I

continuously asked myself if what I was writing was current and interesting. As an editor, I learned the importance of time management and how to have a keen eye for design overall,” Grubbs said. Please check out the work of these student journalists and keep up with all the happenings at J.W. Mitchell High School at jwmhshoofbeat.com.
