Did you know that the month of February has a leap day?

February 29, is added to the calendar during leap years. This extra day makes 2020 366 days long—not 365 days, like a common year. The next leap day is February 29, 2020. The last leap day was on February 29, 2016!

Hail, Caesar!

Roman general Julius Caesar implemented the first leap day in his Julian Calendar, which he introduced in 45 BCE. A leap day was added every four years. At the time, the leap day was February 24, and February was the last month of the year.

Tradition and Folklore

Leap day as a concept has existed for more than 2000 years and it is still associated with age-old customs, folklore, and superstition. One of the most wellknown traditions is that women propose to their boyfriends, instead of the other way around. Does the movie “Leap Year” with Amy Adams ring any bells? When yet another anniversary passes without a marriage proposal, Anna (Amy Adams) decides to take action. Aware of the superstitions and Celtic traditions that allow women to pop the question on Feb. 29, she plans to follow her lover to Dublin and propose. I personally don’t think I have the guts to propose to a man, but kudos to those brave and courageous ladies that pop the question themselves.

All About The Heart

The month of February has long been synonymous with tender heart shapes and the sensual color of red—thanks to the annual celebration of Valentine’s Day. But February isn’t just for friends and lovers. It also reminds us to take care of our heart and consider our risk factors, because February is Heart Disease Awareness Month. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths is caused by heart disease. My father Julio Cesar, named after the Roman General, was only

62 years old when he passed away unexpectedly from a fatal heart attack on my living room floor 2 years ago, but it hurts like it happened just yesterday.

Don’t Wait

Your risk of heart disease increases as you get older but believe it or not, heart disease can happen at any age. The good news? Some risk factors for heart disease and stroke are preventable when people make healthy lifestyle choices. Some risk factors for cardiovascular disease include; obesity, physical inactivity, high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, high cholesterol or diabetes. So, if you want to stay on top of your health and try to avoid the risk of heart disease, there are a few things you can do. Starting with not smoking, but if you’re already a smoker try your best to quit. If you are being treated for high blood pressure and cholesterol do your best to take your medications as prescribed by your doctor. Next, make heart-healthy decisions. Eat whole foods that are low in trans-fat, saturated fat, sodium, and added sugar. Limit sugar-sweetened beverages and red meat. Condiment your proteins with spices instead of salt. When you’re preparing a meal, make sure to fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables instead of carbohydrates. Finally, get moving! Living a sedentary lifestyle will put you at a much greater risk for heart disease. Try to get in at least 20 minutes of physical activity 4-5 days a week, then build from there. Manage your stress levels. Stress is linked to heart disease in many ways. It can raise your blood pressure. Extreme stress can be a “trigger” for a heart attack. Make sure you get enough sleep. If you don’t get enough sleep, you may raise your risk of high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes. Those three things can raise your risks for heart disease.

Until next time,

For sports injuries, NOW’S the time to get the issue fixed According to Dr. Jennifer Swaringen of Alexander Orthopaedic Associates in Trinity, FL, “Nagging sports-related injuries can be painful and even debilitating, and there’s no time like now to address the problem.” With this in mind, here are some questions that patients routinely ask Dr. Swaringen: Q: What is the most common sports injury that you see? A: Shoulder pain is a very common condition we treat in our practice. A frequent cause of this pain, especially as people reach their 40s and beyond, is related to the rotator cuff tendons and associated bursae and bone spurs. Rotator cuff injuries are more common as we age, part of the wear and tear process of the shoulder. We often find rotator cuff tears in athletes, like people who’ve played tennis or baseball or who’ve been weightlifters; or in workers who do things overhead, like painters

replacements, and also help many patients with hip problems.

or carpenters. Younger patients with rotator cuff tears are more likely to have had an acute trauma, fall or sudden jerking movement applied to the arm, or they’ve lifted something that was too heavy to lift safely. Q: What other types of sports-related issues do you see? A: We are experts in helping patients with knee issues, including doing knee

Q: What are some treatment options for sports-related injuries? A: Nonsurgical treatment options can include rest, activity modification, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, physical therapy or cortisone injections. These methods can be very effective in relieving pain and restoring functionality. At the same time, small to medium tears have good reported outcomes with physical therapy and surgery. Q: What are the chances that I will have to have surgery? A: Proceeding with surgery is a decision made between the patient and doctor, and many issues can be resolved without surgery. We take into consideration factors like the amount of pain, and whether pain is persisting despite passage of time, therapy, medication, or injections. We also consider the patient’s

activity level with work, sports and hobbies, along with the level of the patient’s degree of weakness or loss of function. The size of a tear, the quality of the tendon and muscle tissue, and how recent the tear occurred are all important factors to consider, too. Q: Why should someone with an issue see you now? A: It’s never a negative to come visit us and have us determine the exact nature of the issue. In many cases, there are many steps we can take that won’t require surgery. There is no way to know until you see us, though. Q: Why should someone go to Alexander Orthopaedics? A: We have quality, highly experienced surgeons, and

both our surgeons and staff have a focus on excellent service. It’s important to check out the backgrounds of the doctors as you make your decision on where to go for help. I received both a Bachelor of Science and medical degree at Emory University, and completed a General Surgery internship and Orthopaedic Surgery residency at the University of Michigan. I then went on to complete a sports medicine fellowship at Minnesota Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Institute in Minneapolis. The Gregg Schindler State Farm Agency February Student Athletes of the Month: Khamari Smith and Charlotte Vari

By Ostina Myrtil

Basketball’s his life. The rest is just details. The J.W. Mitchell High School boys varsity basketball team welcomed Khamari Smith to the team for the 2020 season. Smith is originally from Montgomery, Alabama and attended G.W. Carver Senior High School but moved to Florida midsummer. Since his transfer, his performance on the court made his name spread like wildfire across the school. “I moved because I want to be a D1 player in college and hope to make it to the big leagues, and Florida has better chances of people going D1 and have better resources,” Smith said. Smith’s decision to pursue success in his fascination for basketball, which started when he was three, left him in an unfamiliar environment, quiet and closed off, until the basketball season started.

8 FEBRUARY 2020

“Basketball made me be able to speak to everybody now. When I first came to this school I wasn’t talking to anybody, I wasn’t getting along with anybody. But now I can just talk to everybody,” Smith said. Through 11 games, Smith achieved the rank of 48th in the state, with an average of 19.6 points per game, and 18th in the state in 3-pointers made in a single game. “Khamari is extremely athletic but very raw still. He has a lot to learn on how to play but is still really good. He’s going to be one of the best players to ever play here,” Coach Jason Vetter said. Smith’s mother convinced him Florida was the right place to be, giving him the push to leave Alabama behind and live with his aunt and uncle. Even though distance separates them, she still influences his choices and his path. “My mother motivates me to stay on point, teaches me

some of everything I need to know and motivates me as of her being a single parent to just go hard at anything I do in life,” Smith said. Vetter requires his players to meet expectations, such as attending classes, being decent people, maintaining a 2.0 GPA, and always engaged in practice. These requirements benefitted Smith, allowing his academic standing to spike. “I just feel like when I came to Florida I was ready to put in work. I felt like I was just on a mission because when I was staying in Alabama I really didn’t care. I wasn’t even going home some nights. But when I came to Florida I just felt like I was on a mission to just have a D1 offer,” Smith said. Smith has not lost sight in his goals. He continues to show up to practice every day and works at his sport, according to Vetter. He also still wants to finish school and become an entrepreneur to sell his

own merchandise. Smith has been able to persevere and become an exemplary player and person. Congratulations to Khamari Smith for his selection as the Gregg Schindler February Athlete of the Month.

By Maddi Smyth A Shot to Remember Charlotte Vari (‘20) excels at both girls basketball and lacrosse, landing her the spot as the Gregg Schindler State Farm Agency February Athlete of the Month. On Jan. 28, she helped guide her team to a 37-35 win against Dixie Hollins High School with five points, two assists, and 6 rebounds. She has been invested in her athleticism from an early age, and continues to enjoy sports as a part of her high school career, despite being a graduating senior this year. “Playing basketball and lacrosse relieves a lot of stress for me from school work and it’s a way to be with friends and have a good time after school,” Vari said. While using her sports as a way to relax after school, Vari still takes her career as an athlete seriously. She has been awarded Player of the Game on four different occasions across the years of her high school career, from her 2016 award for

junior varsity basketball, to her three different awards for varsity lacrosse in 2018 and 2019. During her basketball career alone Vari has played 53 games, with an average of 4 points scored per game, 1.7 assists per game and 3.4 rebounds per game. She is also capable of an average of 2.1 steals and 0.3 blocks. Despite excellence in basketball, Vari finds herself drawn to lacrosse and wishes to continue her mounting career with it. She has played 29 games with a total of 48 goals, and an average of 2 goals per game. She has taken 91 total shots on a goal, with a .527 shot accuracy percentage and a .301 faceoff win percentage. “I’m actually going to college to play lacrosse. I’m going to Notre Dame College, it’s a D2 (National Collegiate Athletic Association [NCAA] Division II institution) in Ohio. I signed a scholarship with them,” Vari said. Vari’s athletic goals are her main focus, and her dedication pays off in more than the form of college scholarships. As a ju-

nior on the varsity lacrosse team she won Best Offensive Player of the Year award. “After school when I don’t have any sports practice, I actually go home and I go out in the yard or in the driveway and I shoot hoops or play lacrosse to better my skills,” Vari said. Vari’s flexibility as a player is one of her most valuable skills, and she uses it to her advantage. But her dedication and leadership to both teams is what makes her stand out. “I play wherever the coach puts me, but I like to help the team and just do whatever I can to help them. I am captain for both lacrosse and basketball and it’s a big role but I enjoy it,” Vari said. Charlotte Vari is a talented person, both on and off the court, and expresses valuable capabilities as a leader and passionate teammate, resulting in her recognition as Athlete of the Month. She is a senior set to graduate, and though we will lose one valuable player, Notre Dame College is certainly lucky to gain one more MVP.

Tech Talk with Bob: Is Your Router Protecting You? When digital connections replaced analog connections, communication became faster and cheaper. You could simultaneously connect more than a couple hundred devices for the cost of about two or three phone lines, and they ran approximately 15 times faster than you could get from a single analog dialup phone line connection. This had a tremendous affect on the communications industry. You saw it was happening. Remember years back when you could, all of a sudden, call anywhere in the country anytime for one low monthly rate? What happened to all of those longdistance phone charges we used to dread when we opened our phone bill? Digital technology replacing analog technology has changed the communication industry forever; not just in the convenience of the faster speeds and lower phone bills, but also in the way you need to protect yourself online. The digital technology our

computers/phones/tablets we now use in our homes or offices have a central communication point, the router. The device we call the router or wirelessrouter (wifi-router) actually contains multiple devices that perform various functions for your network. One of these functions is the potential to keep you protected from people and other machines that want to invade your network connection without your knowledge. Sometimes it is a cheapskate

neighbor not wanting to pay for their own internet connection and sometimes it might be a cyber criminal preying on your unprotected network to use it for nefarious activities. Most routers are designed to work right out of the box. The router manufacturer wants your setup to be quick and simple. Although the router is configured to work out of the box, it is not configured, out of the box, to keep you safe. Creating a safer network and internet environment is your responsibility. A responsibility that unfortunately many people overlook mainly because they are unaware that they even need to do it. Some think that just because their router is doing everything they want it to do (provide internet access) that they just assume that it is doing all the things they need it to do. Including keeping them safe. Often times people assume that their internet service provider (ISP) will keep them safe online.

That is a dangerous assumption. Remember, your ISP’s job is to provide you with internet access, not protect your network. You don’t typically select your ISP and router by the safety they can provide. Selection is usually based on price and speed (watch any of the TV ads trying to get your ISP dollars). And it stands to reason, that when you select an ISP and install a router you’re interested in how well it provides you internet service not how it protects you. How many times have you purchased a car because you liked the seatbelts and airbags? Some ISPs may offer a token form of protection like a free antivirus program. In the old days of dialup internet connections antivirus was enough. Today’s digital world requires more protection than a wifi password and antivirus software. Routers can be configured to keep you safer online. Knowing how to configure them and actually taking the time to do it can be a

bit of a chore. And to do it right, does require a certain degree of expertise. I highly recommend that you seek a cyber security professional for help with this particular project. Protecting access to your network is a critical component to your online safety. Criminals will exploit the easy, unprotected systems. Please do not neglect hardening the security on the device that is your gateway to the internet, your router.

Comprehensive Healthcare for Women of All Ages at Orange Blossom Women’s Group Dr. Bardach and her Trinity-based Team Put the CARE in Healthcare for Women By Kelly Stuart Williams, MA It is a rare thing to meet a medical professional whose interest in your healthcare is as important to her as it is to you. And the passion that the team at Orange Blossom Women’s Group is as contagious, as is the smile of its owner and Medical Director, Dr. Reut Bardach. Expecting to find a medical practice full of “expecting” mothers, we quickly learned that women’s healthcare needs are lifelong—not just when a woman is in her childbearing years. Dr. Bardach explained that prevention and early detection of diseases like Cancer are why fatalities due to this devastating illness have dropped 27% in the past 25 years. https://www. cancer.org/latest-news/factsand-figures-2019.html. It’s as important (if not more) that

Dr. Melinda Graham, MD FACOG women frequent the office of their ObGyn after the age of 40. “Never before has there been more opportunity for disease prevention and health promotion than in 21st Century America. Access to care is more available and affordable to Americans, yet many fail to follow-up on annual visits and tests like pap smears and mammograms,” said Dr. Bardach. “It’s part of the reason

why we pride ourselves on building relationships with our patients—they know we care about their overall wellbeing and that we will follow-up. The bond is strong!” she added. To demonstrate the care and respect for their patients, a high priority is put on punctuality, “We value people’s time just like they value our time.” To the degree that they are able, Dr. Bardach and her team make sure that patients are seen at their appointment time. Many of their patients come from referrals, by wordof-mouth, and from message groups like Trinity Chat. Some drive to Trinity from as far as Lakeland and Naples to receive care from Orange Blossom Women’s Group. “One of the most encouraging things we hear (and read) is when a Trinity Chat member posts a question

like, “Where can I find a great ObGyn in the community?” Dr. Bardach added that she “lights up” when she reads all the enthusiastic referrals to Orange Blossom Women’s Group. Positive patient testimonials are found on Facebook, Trinity Chat and on Google Reviews: I can’t say enough about this place! The staff are AMAZING, caring, and personable. They actually sit and listen to you! Also, no paper gowns here! It’s pink robes and instead of an ugly exam table they have exam chairs!! Best girlie appt EVER!! Located off Little Road and Photonics Drive in the Trinity area, Dr. Bardach said she chose to locate in Trinity, because the high growth area is easily accessible for patients though “…lacking in terms of women’s care and women’s services.” In addition to providing comprehensive healthcare

services for women, Dr. Bardach has recently opened Orange Blossom Aesthetics: a fullservice med spa next door to her medical practice. To truly offer comprehensive care for women, Dr. Bardach said, “We needed to look at all of a woman’s needs. Women want their needs to be acknowledged. And I wanted to be able to take care of those needs at Orange Blossom Aesthetics.” Many needs may not be medical, and many treatments may not be medically necessary, but Dr. Bardach said, “It’s an important part of health that women feel heard and feel good about themselves.” “All day long I talk to women about problems they have, the things that bother them and the things that they struggle with. The more you listen to women talk about [these problems] the more you say, I wish there was more that I could do to help and that is how the idea of owning a med spa was born.” Dr. Bardach’s

listening skills and the caring manner of her team are demonstrated throughout their Google Reviews. After three years of searching for a new OB/GYN I have finally found Dr. Bardach! She truly listens and practices a personal application of medicine for her patients. I truly value her dedication for patient experience as well as medical care while taking the time to educate for her patients. The entire office team keeps things professional and positive. Scheduling is easy and quick. I easily accessed their new patient forms online. “Rossi’s”

story continued from page 1. to realize that we’ve finally found our “goto” Italian restaurant in town. Whenever I get the opportunity to write about Rossi Ristorante Italiano I am overjoyed. I know that everything I say about their exquisite food, hard-working owners, and their incredible staff, comes straight from my heart and my very own experiences dining there with my loved ones. Growing up with a traditional Italian family gave me a strong passion for what true Italian cuisine was all about; the fresh produce, the local seasonal ingredients, the aromas, the passed down family recipes, the pasta “al dente,” and the entire experience that comes with enjoying a good Italian meal in a worry-free, family environment. And that is exactly what you will find at Rossi Ristorante Italiano. It comes to no surprise that this neighborhood gem has been in business for over three decades! Something that cannot be said about a lot of other local restaurants that seem to come and go every year. Great quality and consistency are very hard to achieve, but at Rossi, they’ve mastered it.

They have an impressive uniformity in terms of speed, food quality, and courtesy in delivering excellent service to their customers, regardless of time and occasion. Gabriella Rossi, the owner, always says hello whenever we walk in and greets us with a big smile. Knowing that someone remembers you and appreciates your business goes a long way. “We have customers that have been coming to Rossi since we first opened our doors over 35 years ago,” said Gabriella.

“Nothing makes me feel more proud than when I hear someone say they love our food,” she added. And people love their food, they really do. A happy regular named Paul said, “Rossi is my favorite Italian restaurant in the Tampa Bay area--my family has been coming here for over 20 years. Their pizza is among the best I’ve had, and the pasta is always al dente. The chicken piccata is fork-tender, the veal pizzaiola is dynamite, and you can’t go wrong with the penne Alla vodka.”

in town, hands down.” They also have a wide selection of Italian wines, including one of my personal favorites; the Carletto, from Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. This wine touches my heartstrings and helps me reminisce about the days when I lived in Italy. It is truly delicious, affordable, and makes the perfect pairing with any of Rossi’s authentic Italian dishes!

Everything’s Made From Scratch While many things have changed over the years, Rossi’s core commitment to serving you and your loved ones with the most delicious and made-to-order Italian dishes has not. Everything on the menu at Rossi tastes amazing and is presented with pride. From the appetizers, pizzas, salads and Italian specialty entrees, to the decadent desserts, like their famous homemade tiramisu. My mom’s favorite! “We make everything from scratch and with the freshest ingredients,” said Gabriella. “We also serve certified organic, freerange chicken from a production company called ‘Free Birds.’ They are well-known for their organic, non-GMOs line, which is also antibiotic-free. They feed their birds a balanced diet of fortified vegetarian grains, so there never any artificial additives, animal fats or by-products used to feed these chickens.” All of Rossi’s recipes have been passed on from generation to generation, but Gabriella says she can happily accommodate any customer’s specific needs. “I am happy to modify any of our dishes to meet our customer’s needs, and it is not a problem, as everything is made to order,” said Gabriella. My Personal favorites Start your meal with their scrumptious tomato bruschetta, made with the most delicious fresh and crispy bread, fresh basil, and balsamic dressing. Into seafood? Go for the Clams Oreganato, middle neck clams

stuffed with a seasoned oregano-breadcrumb mixture and baked in white wine and lemon. If mussels are your thing, you’ll love their sauteed mussels with your choice of sauce; marinara, fradiavolo, or bianco. Everything on the lunch and dinner menu is nothing short of spectacular. But my favorite dish has to be the “Aragosta Fra Diavolo.” A succulent dish of “Al Dente” pasta in a mildly spicy tomato sauce served with shellfish and a whole lobster tail. ‘Aragosta’ means Lobster, and Fra Diavolo means ‘of the devil’ in Italian. So basically this dish is called “Lobster of the devil” and it’s named this way because of the spiciness of the dish. I eat a lot of spicy food and I love anything seafood, so this dish was made for me. But don’t be afraid to try it, they can adjust the level of spiciness for you! If you’re looking for a meat option, I recommend the Veal “Saltimbocca.” Meaning literally “to jump in your mouth,” the saltimbocca is an iconic Roman dish traditionally made with veal, prosciutto, and fresh sage leaves in a delicate white wine and butter sauce. Yum! Undecided? Try any of their fabulous brick-oven pizzas, you can thank me later. Sophia D. a local customer had this to say; “The family atmosphere and the delicious pizza have my family coming here over and over. We’ve never tried anything else, so I can’t speak to the rest of the menu. We get the thin crust and extra crispy and it comes out crispy and light and perfect every time. For us is the best pizza

Leave Room For Dessert The Tiramisu (meaning “pick me up,” “cheer me up” or “life me up”) at Rossi is my mom’s favorite dessert, and their cannolis are my own personal favorite. Cannoli are Italian pastries that originated on the island of Sicily and are today a staple of Sicilian cuisine. Cannoli consist of tubeshaped shells of fried pastry dough, filled with a sweet, creamy filling usually containing ricotta. At Rossi, they add lots of chocolate chips to the filing, which gives them an even more special touch. Just thinking about them makes my mouth water. Special Occasions? Rossi’s got you covered! Rossi can accommodate large groups and special events such as birthdays, graduations or even weddings. It’s not unusual to hear someone say, “Can I bring in a party of 30 on Saturday afternoon for a birthday party?” So, keep that in mind! Also, they have a full catering menu to serve parties of any size, which means that you can truly share your favorite Rossi dishes with everyone you love! If you love Italian food, you’ve got to put Rossi Ristorante Italiano on the regular rotation. Showing genuine gratitude and pride, Gabriella said “I want all of our customers to know how appreciative I am for their incredible support, loyalty, and patronage during all these years. You are the reason why we do what we do.” Open for lunch and for dinner seven days a week, your entire family will love it, mine definitely does! Rossi Ristorante Italiano is located in the 7 Springs Plaza at 7254 S.R. 54 in New Port Richey. They are open: Mon. – Thur., 11 a.m.¬–10 p.m.; Fri. and Sat., 11 a.m.–11 p.m.; and 1–10 p.m. on Sun. Interplay Therapy Center

In the heart of Trinity lies a string of doctors’ offices and medical buildings. A seemingly casual area that goes about its business. It may not appear that anything too special is going on. But the work happening in office number 1816 is nothing short of a miracle. Within those walls is a woman who wants to change the idealities of modern motor and sensory therapy. She is ushering in a new wave of therapy to show that those who cannot communicate with speech may actually be the smartest among us. She hopes to refocus the lens through which people with autism are viewed, and to show the world that her clients have so much to offer. Dana Johnson, Ph.D., M.S., OTR/L, is an occupational therapist who specializes in working with children and adults with motor and sensory differences, including autism, apraxia, and other developmental differences. Dr. Johnson started her private practice in 2010. She is also the founder of Invictus Academy Tampa Bay, a private non-profit school serving students K through 12. Dana is working to change the mindset of those who believe that these individuals cannot reach their goals. The spectrum of autism is broad and complicated. Some people with motor and sensory differences are well integrated into society but may struggle in social situations. The clients Dr. Johnson sees are on the opposite end. Most have been labeled as “low-functioning” – mainly because they are not able to communicate with their speech. Dr. Johnson has been a clinician since 2006 and now has a wide range of clients ranging in age from 3 to 35. The common challenge most of her clients face is difficulty with behavior, and many cannot communicate reliably through speech. When asked why she chose this field, Dana says “I wanted to change the typical perceptions of autism and I felt the need to help people understand how smart those with autism and similar diagnoses truly are.” She has taken great strides in her field, and because of that, she now speaks statewide and nationally at medical seminars and events. The concept of Presuming Competence is not only central to her practice, it is her motto. “Presuming competence means that I believe ALL individuals can think, learn and

22 FEBRUARY 2020

understand. Too often, my clients are marginalized and viewed as intellectually delayed because they are unable to communicate through speech or demonstrate what they know. Nobody should have to prove that they are smart. We don’t assume incompetence for typical people so why do we tend to do this with autistic individuals?” Dr. Johnson continues to advocate for nonspeaking individuals everywhere. What Does Interplay Do? To increase the motor and sensory abilities of her clients, Dr. Johnson uses fitness and functional movement exercises. She says, “the feedback I receive from my clients is that the harder they work out, the more it enables them to move their bodies more purposefully. It also can decrease anxiety significantly.” She even puts her clients through CrossFit workouts which is a combination of cardio and strength exercises built to develop all parts of the body simultaneously in a practical way. Dana completed her Level 1 CrossFit certification so that she could ensure safety and an individualized program for her clients. Her workouts are a radical concept in the field of autism, as most occupational therapy interventions focus primarily on sensory integration therapy. Current research in the field of autism points to it as a movement disorder rather than a cognitive disorder — exercise and functional movement help

to build new motor pathways so that the body can function more purposefully. Many of Dr. Johnson’s clients are non-speaking or are unreliable speakers and her focus on supporting movement extends to their ability to communicate. Speech is a motor task and not a cognitive task. Typically, we associate those who have limited speech as intellectually or cognitively delayed, which is often incorrect. By practicing and building gross motor skills, non-speaking individuals can communicate, which opens up a whole new world for them and their caregivers. Spelling to Communicate (S2C) is a form of Assistive Technology that supports individuals who are nonspeaking or unreliably speaking. S2C teaches purposeful motor skills to point to letters to spell as a reliable form of communication. Current research suggests that those with autism and other sensorymotor differences have inefficient motor and sensory feedback to coordinate their brain and body to work together purposefully. We call this the “brain-body disconnect.” With practice and alongside rigorously trained and skilled practitioners, individuals become more fluent and build new motor pathways between the brain and body. As a result, purposeful motor skills improve, and individuals move from pointing to letters to typing on the keyboard. Responses also move from concrete to more abstract allowing for individual expression and original thoughts from the speller. Because Dr. Johnson combines S2C with fitness, her clients begin to develop more purposeful motor skills for their daily tasks, working in the community, and, most importantly, communication. Behavioral challenges and anxiety also decrease as a result of improved brain and body connections. Dr. Johnson took out a laminated piece of paper with the alphabet, some symbols, and numbers on it. This is what her clients use to communicate and engage in conversations. With 26 letters, there are infinite possibilities! Remember, some of her clients were written off as completely unable to communicate. With her efforts, she has flipped that into what she calls “some of the smartest people I know.” What’s Next? I asked Dr. Johnson what the future

holds for Interplay Therapy Center, to which she responded: “I want the community to know about how important communication is for everyone - communication is a right. To support communication, we need to realize that those with sensory and motor differences like autism and apraxia need to work on purposeful movement to support their goals. We work on purposeful movement

through fitness and S2C. Her clients are an extraordinary group of humans who dream, live, and wish just like everyone else. They have a disability, but it does not define them. Dana hopes to continue to speak nationwide at events and for her clinic to grow exponentially. She also wants to continue to teach others about non-speaking individuals so that the community can embrace their abilities.

Support is what the field needs. Dr. Johnson works to support not only her clients but their parents and family members while educating other medical professionals. Those who are affected by motor and sensory differences are not unable to communicate; they communicate differently. Though I wish I could have spent more time with Dr. Johnson and her clients, my experience with her has opened my eyes to the kind of people our community has to offer. She is an inspiration and is leading the way to improve methods of communication for those with motor and sensory differences. For more information, contact Dr. Dana L. Business hours are Mon. - Fri. 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM. www.interplaytherapycenter.com Spelling to Communicate (S2C) is a form of assistive technology that we are using to support many of our nonspeaking clients. We have learned and will continue to learn so much about our clients and who they really are!

World Record Holder Increases His Drive with National Rejuvenation Centers

Ryan Winther By Ethan Lichtenberg Long Drive Champion and world-record holder for the fastest club swing ever recorded (227 miles per hour!), Ryan Winther, was tired. His motivation for competing, training, and business ventures were dwindling. The days of appearing on the Golf Channel driving a ball through their distance simulator to the amazement of the hosts and crew seemed distant. Although still in shape, Ryan was not as strong and was putting on body fat despite a healthy diet. Ryan’s co-host on NBC sports, “Driven” golf show, Charlie Zamora, took notice. He knew former Olympic weightlifting champion, Jeff Wittmer, who is the business manager for National Rejuvenation Centers, St. Louis. He heard about the success of their protocols with Rejuvenation Medicine – the combination of bio-identical hormone optimization, personalized exercise, and nutrition protocols. Ryan agreed that something had to be done to get his drive back and called Jeff, who recommended that Ryan seek treatment from the founder of rejuvenation medicine, and

26 FEBRUARY 2020

author of the best-selling book “Rejuvenation; Real People, Real Results” Dr. Bartley Kerr at National Rejuvenation Centers in Palm Harbor. This was a pivotal and personal moment for Ryan. Still, he felt it necessary for others to see what he was going through and devoted an entire episode of “Driven” to his experience at NRC with Dr. Kerr. (The episode can be seen on NBC sports or YouTube https:// youtu.be/tBCNqjiFocI ). Initial blood work was reviewed, and it was found that not only was his testosterone low, but his cholesterol was also terrible. A plan was formulated for Ryan by Dr. Kerr and his medical team to not only get his drive distance back but to get his cholesterol under control and get “his drive for life” back. It worked! After only eight weeks, Ryan’s Total Cholesterol dropped almost 200 points from 349 to 166, his triglycerides dropped from 233 to 66, and his HDL “good cholesterol” rose 13 points from 30 to 43! “The energy and mood elevation is incredible!” says Ryan. “I am enjoying training again, and my head is clear, and I am focused. I am motivated again to set some

big records! Most importantly, I am healthy as my cholesterol is back in line without taking cholesterol medication, and my health insurance dropped my premiums thirty dollars a month!” “Hormone optimization is part of the puzzle, but Rejuvenation Medicine also focuses on the nutrition requirements of the patient and appropriate exercises to fit the patient’s needs,” says Dr. Kerr. “We revamped Ryan’s weight-lifting routine to focus not only on traditional strength movements but functional golf-swing specific movements as well to offer more clubhead speed and flexibility. The nutrition component was tailored to Ryan’s need to maintain muscle mass and get slightly leaner. It is nice to see Ryan happy, recharged, and energetic!” National Rejuvenation Centers now has two locations: one in Palm Harbor, Florida, and one in St. Louis, Missouri. Hormone optimization therapy is much simpler than you might imagine. When a person is in their twenties, everything seems to be synced up both physically and mentally. But as you get older, age begins

to take a toll. It appears that young people have an unfair advantage in life. As you get older, you begin to hit a wall. Dr. Kerr says most of his patients explain the feeling as “blah.” If you’re a male or female over the age of thirty-five, the chances are that you know this feeling. You don’t necessarily feel terrible, but you don’t feel as good as you could either. NRC provides middle age and older patients the hormone values of those healthy twenty-year-olds, who rarely get sick, have high metabolisms, and get results when they work out in the gym! These hormone levels are what Dr. Kerr refers to in his book as “optimal” levels. Your first visit with Dr. Kerr will be an in-depth health history and discussion with Dr. Kerr, and a medical examination will be performed by one of NRC’s doctors or nurse practitioners. Blood work is ordered to determine health and hormone deficiencies. After the results come back, Dr. Kerr and his team at NRC develop a plan to get your hormones in balance with hormone optimization therapy. Once these hormones are back to the way they should be, he recommends a personalized

nutrition plan and exercise programs. Within five weeks, most patients return to him feeling the way they did when they were in their twenties, and many feel even better. Their blood profiles usually change for the positive, body fat is reduced, and muscle is generally increased, and the mood is elevated! Dr. Kerr told me, “the best part is that it doesn’t take working out countless hours and eating next to nothing! Because these men and women have the optimal hormone levels of athletic twenty-year-olds, but also have the muscle fibers of a person over forty, long hours in the gym are counter-productive. The majority of NRC’s patients exercise no more than three and a half hours a week with specific methods to maximize outcomes from their training.” He goes on to say, “People are often shocked by how much food they can eat while losing body fat on the program. They have to realize that since their

hormones are optimal and they are exercising, they have to eat similar to athletes at the training table. Their metabolisms may be the best they have ever been, and healthy exercising adults need the fuel to keep them fit and healthy! Even better, hormone optimization will not break the bank and is more affordable than ever! Many people spend more each month on vitamins than NRC’s patients spend on their prescriptions! If you are tired, gaining weight, lost your libido, feel a loss of motivation, or just feel “off,” Rejuvenation Medicine may be right for you. Get your “drive” back, like long drive champion Ryan Winther, and be a champion in life! Call National Rejuvenation Centers today! provides critical care in his New Port Richey office, “What is most important to my patients is that they are able to see me on an emergency basis…I see them right away when necessary.” A trained team of professionals staff the office and make every effort to schedule patients when they need to be seen by the doctor immediately. A focus on going above and beyond with his patients is part of the reason that Humana has recognized Dr. Machhar and Healthcare Associates of Pasco County as the #1 Ranked Physicians’ Practice in Quality Care by Humana in the state of Florida. In an article published by Cleveland Clinic, one of the nation’s top health providers explained the importance of having a relationship with their physician, “A family physician can be the right answer for most healthcare situations. Medical emergencies are an exception. An emergency is a valid reason to visit the emergency room — but far too many Americans use the ER or urgent care as their primary source of care. It’s one reason among many we spend more as a country on healthcare than anyone else,

yet still rank far from the top in health outcomes.” Dr. Machhar focuses on creating relationships and producing good outcomes with his patients whose needs range from preventative care to urgent care. If you are covered by a qualified Humana health insurance plan, you have access to state of the art care at Healthcare Associates of Pasco County where Dr. Machhar has been an exclusive Humana

Health Care Provider for over 20 years. By partnering with one specific insurance provider, Dr. Machhar is able to spend less time on paper work and more time with his patients. As well, Dr. Machhar is very familiar with other Humana physicians to whom he can refer and follow-up with his patients. Patients Jim and Diane Rizzo wrote, “My husband and I have been going to Dr. Machhar for approximately seven (7)
